Gasthof zum Klostergarten in Heidelberg

The location of the “Gasthof zum Klostergarten” next to the Benedictine Abbey of Neuburg Abbey is very nice. The menu includes some home-style dishes, from which my wife and I chose the leaf salad with strips of turkey breast and the Maultaschen with potato salad. The food wasn't really objectionable and the naturally cloudy monastery beer tasted extremely tasty. On the other hand, the service seemed unmotivated. According to reports, the place used to be better.

Unfortunately we had two bad experiences within 2 weeks. The first time we only went for a drink and had to wait over 40 minutes for 2 beers. And when we wanted to eat today we were turned away because it was closed today... We checked the homepage before our long journey to make sure they were open. Reach into the toilet. Since we weren't served I can't say anything about the food.

We were really looking forward to the beer garden, unfortunately we were very disappointed, the food was lukewarm, the red cabbage was like mush and the beer wasn't really cold. We heard something similar from the next table

Very nicely located beer garden right next to the Benedictine Abbey of Neuburg Abbey and the non-affiliated brewery in the monastery courtyard. Very tasty beer and really good food. Very nice and friendly service. You can buy home-brewed beer in a small shop at the Klosterhof brewery at the back of the beer garden. A brewery tour is also possible with prior registration. And the crazy thing is that you can tap and bottle the brewing water yourself at 3 taps for 10 cents a liter. Great idea and certainly more than sustainable. 👍 Great day, especially sitting in the beer garden in the bright sunshine, hanging out and just letting the day be. 🌞👍

Unfortunately it was a total failure! I was there many years ago and had a very good meal. Just one disappointment today. The roast was on the menu with dumplings and red cabbage. He came with spaetzle! The waiter's answer: “If there are no dumplings left, there will be spaetzle” When I said that I would have liked to have been before, she said very bluntly: “I can bring you fries too.” The food was bland and tasteless! The toilets very dirty! There was dirt in the corners that wasn't from today or yesterday! I will never go there again.

Cakes and drinks were delicious, but the service was subpar. After waiting at the dirty table for a long time, we went inside to order. We had to wait another five minutes there before we could order. Same thing when paying. It wasn't possible to pay by card, and at the same time they couldn't give us change, so we were forced to tip more than we wanted for the poor service.

We were there in August 2024 in a group of about 20 people. The restaurant is nicely located, the service was friendly. So far so good. However, I had to wait more than an hour for the food. My companion had to wait another 30 minutes, even though we ordered together. In fact, others in our group were served earlier, even though they ordered later than my companion and I. Pure chaos. The schnitzel was mediocre, not juicy, quite dry. The fries were halfway acceptable. Later I ordered an espresso. He didn't arrive. So I asked: they would take care of it. The espresso still didn't arrive. Then I asked again. Sometime after more than half an hour the espresso was brought to me. Afterwards I ordered a beer: nothing came here either. I then asked at least two or three times: nothing. So I picked up the beer straight from the tap because the waitress apparently didn't get it. This meant that I was able to drink my beer alone as the others had to leave by now. It has to be said that the restaurant was at around 50% capacity. So there was no question of being overwhelmed due to the large number of guests. It's a shame...because this restaurant had potential for more.

Inexpensive and original restaurant at the monastery. We ate deliciously and the beer was excellent. Very friendly and professional staff, fast service.

The inn really has a lot of potential - the location is fantastic and we were intrigued by the positive reviews. After a long bike ride we wanted to stop there and relax a bit. Unfortunately, the visit was overall disappointing. In bright sunshine, both parasols didn't work. When I asked for a second menu, it was reluctantly given to me - with the suggestion that we could "just both look at one". I found that to be rude and not very hospitable. The tarte flambée was obviously frozen and also arrived cold. Unfortunately, the taste is not a highlight either. It's a shame - we had hoped for more after the good reviews. I won't come back. Well

It could be the beautifully located beer garden in Heidelberg, but very poor service and unfriendly. Food is just mediocre. The beer displayed as “organic Klosterhofbier from draft” is misleading, as the non-alcoholic bottled versions are from other breweries and don’t taste nearly as good. We were there with two small children and were told the umbrellas were broken and couldn't be put up. After 30 minutes they were set up for other guests. And when I pointed this out, I had to listen to unfriendly comments from the waitress. Very, very unfortunate

Rustic atmosphere; Schnitzel was quite firm and tasted ok. Maultaschen very large, but with little content. The reference to incompatibilities was ignored, and even the "repair" did not bring any relief. Despite the high frequency, the toilet apparently wasn't cleaned. Liquids under the urinal and sink looked dingy. Instead of hand or dry towels, toilet paper was provided for drying hands.

The food is average, nothing worth the trip, but if you're just passing by, it's okay. The staff's commitment could be improved... Parking is difficult there. If you're wondering why there are so many good reviews: The owner deletes the bad ones...

The Gasthof Klostergarten in Baden-Württemberg, near Heidelberg, has a beautiful beer garden and really good beer - it's worth a visit. The atmosphere is pleasant, especially outside. However, the service was an absolute disaster. When we arrived at lunchtime, guests were already sitting, but no one knew whether the shop was even open. A cook finally came out, barely spoke German and shouted “ten minutes” from behind. Later a waiter appeared, also with little knowledge of German. The day pass I was given was completely filthy - it was hard to believe it was still in circulation. The tables were also dirty, which further spoiled the overall picture. If you just want to enjoy a good beer in the beer garden, this is the place for you. But for food and service, there are definitely better alternatives in Heidelberg.

We were there last summer. Unfortunately a typical tourist trap. The location is very good and the beer from the neighboring brewery is also excellent. The rest, however, is catastrophic. The bratwursts may come from the Palatinate, but they are not Palatinate bratwursts. More like fried white sausages. The sauce served with it is so poorly mixed that you can still feel the powder in your mouth. If you choose fries with the bratwurst, there is no cabbage with it. Even if it says otherwise on the menu. The fries are limp and unseasoned. The fried potatoes with the schnitzel were totally over-seasoned. At the beginning we sat for quite a long time without knowing whether we would be served or whether there would be self-service, as there was no service for at least 15 minutes. At noon at two with the terrace full. In total we threw away €60 for two adults and a three year old!

Food was fine. Quite big portions. Tasty beer from their own brewery. But service could be better.

Bratwursts with sauerkraut, fried sauce and fries were ordered, delivered without sauerkraut but full price was charged. Flambée from the freezer but €14.90. All in all, dirty glasses for water are not recommended

The service could be friendlier. You didn't feel very welcome. What was impressive, however, was the dingy “ambience”. There was dirt everywhere in the corners, the walls were scuffed and especially the toilets were disgusting. No toilet paper, broken equipment, WEEKS of dirt on the floor I've literally lost my appetite. The food was okay, nothing more. And the "Zero waste" announced on the website is not correct with 4 plastic bags for ketchup🙈. Conclusion: once and never again!

This is my favourite restaurant here in Heidelberg. Excellent food and service. Their own beer is just amazing!

We were there for the beer seminar with a planned three-course menu When we asked where the beer seminar was taking place, we noticed that there wasn't necessarily harmony between these events. At a long table there was sausage, cheese, tomatoes, bread and butter as a starter. Unfortunately these were spread over three plates and with 18 people there wasn't much to be gained. It was so loud at the next table that the best efforts of the young man who gave the beer seminar could unfortunately not be heard or only partially heard. The first beer was of course also divided into large bottles. Then we went on the brewery tour part 1. That was okay and fun too. Then we went back to the loud restaurant and then to our table. There were chairs missing that the table opposite got hold of After we got the chairs ourselves, we had the main course. The taste was very good even though the portion wasn't particularly large. Dessert was actually planned, but unfortunately we were informed that all the desserts had already been eaten by the neighboring table. So this was then replaced with beer. So I can only say that the price-performance ratio was unfortunately not right. I can't say who is responsible for what because apparently the kitchen and the brewery are not connected.

This review has nothing to do with the food per se, but rather with the most absurd experience we have ever had. Conclusion in advance: Some of us were in this restaurant under different circumstances over a year ago and had positive memories of it. This evening, which seemed merely strange at the beginning, became very bizarre and unpleasant towards the end. Our criticism is also aimed at the owner. It is completely unacceptable that you can make a reservation and everything online says that the restaurant is open, even though there is no service staff on site. The fact that the owner was aware of the situation and yet did not intervene is absolutely incomprehensible. We (a group of 8 work colleagues) had reserved a table in advance, which was possible without any problems. Nevertheless, the situation on site was completely surreal: 1. When we arrived the restaurant was completely empty. When we entered we met two people from the kitchen, both of whom spoke little German and no English. 2. The younger one (J) actually wanted to put us off and said that the restaurant was closed because the service staff wasn't there this week. 3. The elder (A) noticed this, objected and said we should sit down. 4. A colleague (K) from our group was spoken to in Hindi by A because she is Indian. 5. When we tried to order it didn't work due to the language barrier. It became clear that neither A nor J had ever worked as service workers. To simplify the ordering process, we all ordered the same thing (cheese spaetzle). For the drinks we were given a piece of paper and a pen to write down our order ourselves. 7. Despite this simplification, A was overwhelmed with the drinks, so K went to the bar to get the drinks for us - on A's instructions. 8. In between, the owner apparently came in, asked A if everything was okay, didn't look at us and disappeared again after A signaled with a thumbs up that everything was okay. 9. It became increasingly obvious that A was heavily intoxicated. When the food came, he brought extra food without asking and simply put it on the table. He didn't mind our conversation; At one point he stood near us, staring at us and urging us to drink more. He opened drinks without being asked and wanted to pour them, which we were only able to prevent by energetic intervention. 10. At one point we found out that only cash payments were possible, even though various card payments were signposted on the door. We weren't told this in advance, which meant we had to stay much longer than we wanted. A colleague who came later was able to withdraw enough money to pay for everyone. 11. The worst thing, however, was A's inappropriate behavior towards K. He patted her head, vehemently urged her to come "back" with him because he wanted to show her something, and repeated the patting on the grounds that she reminded him to his daughter. 12. Finally, he made similar advances to almost all of his female colleagues. We all just wanted to leave. 13. When we asked, J explained why he wasn't doing anything because otherwise he would "look bad in front of the boss." He apologized several times for A's behavior. 14. Towards the end, A spoke only in his native language, without realizing that no one understood him. 15. Things got chaotic again when paying. A was unable to calculate the amounts, so we calculated them ourselves on our cell phones, showed him the amount and finally paid in cash.

Stale beer tastes completely different than if you drank it directly in the brewery below. Toilets totally dirty.

Very cozy atmosphere, caring service and excellent food! I totally recommend the full goose (large portion for 5/6 adults), served with side vegetables, very tasty and well priced!

Dinner for the day is already out at 1:00 p.m., but the kitchen doesn't let the service know! Next meal venison goulash cold on a plate! Then heating it up in the microwave is disastrous. Vesper break is a plate of sausage and cheese cold cuts from the packaging and is placed on the plate without any thought with 3 slices of bread. Service is good, but the ambience is unfortunately lacking. Don't have to try again, what a shame! Great location actually, but would rather eat somewhere else.

Tasteless schnitzel with fries, very average beer sauce, salad with ready-made sauce. Bratwursts not seasoned enough, sauerkraut ok. Only the waiter was praiseworthy because he was friendly and quick. Result: I can only recommend a visit to the restaurant to consume the tasty beers.

Very good food, with very, very nice service. We were there for the second time. Once in the beer garden in summer and today in the tavern. Reservation on Sunday is an advantage. The only negative thing: the room is very noisy and it would be a tip to stick felt under the chairs.

I have never not been served in my life. Both the attempt to order at the counter, which was rejected with the information that one would be served outside, was as unsuccessful as the active approach of bored and unmotivated service staff. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon. It was then clear to me why most of the tables were empty. We left frustrated after 20 minutes without being served.

All in all very good, nice atmosphere, the food tasted good, the conditions weren't the friendliest but still polite at all times. It's easy to get there from Heidelberg by car, and it's a short 5-10 minute walk by public transport. I was there with my brother as a relaxing end to a hike through the Odenwald. It was definitely worth it and would love to do it again.

Very nice service, just our thing

New team, new flair... So, quite surprisingly, we had a great end to the day. French music put us in a good mood along the way. The outdoor restaurant has been newly polished and the fairy lights created a real country inn holiday atmosphere in the dark. The guests at the neighboring table rounded everything off with light and cheerful conversations. But best of all: the service and food were unrecognizable. Super, super nice and uncomplicated hosts. Despite the kitchen being closed, we were served unexpectedly and very tasty tarte flambée. Everything was very harmonious and with a nice atmosphere. We will definitely stay there again on our next visit to the Mausbachtal.

This place has really poor food nowadays. Flammkuchen was not placed long enough in the oven and had no crispiness to it. The schnitzel didn't even come with a side of salad. Overall, great beer but the food is like home microwaved frozen meal.

I was there yesterday and didn't want to eat meat. So for a surcharge of 1 euro I received an adapted menu: instead of 2 potato dumplings with a piece of pork and apple red cabbage, I received a large portion of fried chanterelles (instead of the meat), 3 potato dumplings and apple red cabbage. I was very happy! It was super delicious! The dark beer was also very aromatic. Only the light in the women's toilet didn't work properly, and there was no hand soap in the handicap accessible one...

Actually a nice place… The food is ok. Not a culinary highlight. The salad drowns in the sauce, the sauce with the bratwurst doesn't taste good. The service was quite quick but rather grumpy. I found the loud “conversations” of the employees as they stood smoking in the doorway to the interior very unpleasant. As a guest, I don't want to hear that they are being rude to each other. That doesn't reflect well on the inn. A smile now and then would be worth a lot. Unfortunately we didn't feel comfortable.

Unfortunately there are no vegan dishes. 🥲 But at least fries and salad are good and recommended!

The monastery garden in Heidelberg is an absolute gem! From the moment we entered we felt welcome and well looked after. The service was exceptional - attentive, friendly and professional. The food was excellent. Every dish we tried was a culinary masterpiece, perfectly prepared and flavorful. The beer selection also left nothing to be desired. The selection of beers was impressive and the quality was first class. It was the perfect complement to our meal and completed the evening. We can only warmly recommend the monastery garden and are already looking forward to our next visit. A big thank you to the entire team for this unforgettable experience!

The restaurant is absolutely not recommended. Anyone who comes here has to bring a lot of time with them, despite advance reservations. The service staff is inexperienced and unqualified. Out of about 5 people, only one knew what to do. If there was a way to put beer back into the keg, the bar would have done it. When ordering drinks, two out of fourteen guests were simply forgotten. The two then got something when the rest had already drunk the first round. Shortly before the food arrived, there was a smell of a cable fire. Apparently the dishwasher behind the counter was running hot, but none of the staff really cared about that. The appetite was basically gone. The food came, there was no cutlery. After the first ones stared at their food for a while, we took the setting up ourselves. It also has to be said that the beer wasn't fully tapped, until it was at the table it looked like someone had already drunk it. After dinner we wanted to have a drink. None, no liquor available. Once and never again.

If you like SB-Union Schnitzel, not quite full beer, waiting times à la Deutsche Bahn and the appealing smell of a burnt cooling system, this is the right place for you.

We were hesitant because of the bad reviews lately, but good experience overall. Food was delicious and was ready quickly. Beer was good, though they only had one option - the rest was out of stock. Nice location. Waitress was alone and on a busy day things probably take longer but we had nothing to complain about.

Were there yesterday, ate cheese spaetzle twice, we were happy. Unfortunately, in the end it was just a pan of dry spaetzle with a dash of cream (?) or bechamel sauce (?) and mozzarella (?) on top as cheese. Unfortunately it had nothing to do with classic cheese spaetzle. Location has far more potential than what is on offer, beer from the house brewery was unfortunately all...all in all, it's a shame

Service was slightly overwhelmed, but still friendly to us. Unfortunately, the food was catastrophic, we had cheese spaetzle and the Palatinate bratwurst. There was a hair in the cheese spaetzle, the spaetzle were the cheapest from the supermarket, ready-made onions with no taste, the cheese was very bland and generally not seasoned. The Palatinate bratwursts were barely fried, the color was like white sausages, the taste was also bland, and the watery gravy couldn't save it. Also the sauerkraut was missing. The fries were delicious.

At the end of August we attended our wedding dinner with 30 guests in the monastery garden. After a bit of awkward communication in advance, everything was wonderful, both during the set-up and decoration, as well as on the day of the celebration itself. The service team was very competent, warm, well-coordinated and courteous. The drinks we ordered came quickly and the food was delicious and served to all guests at the same time, which is an achievement for 30 people. There was a separate children's menu and all guests, big and small, were happy. Special requests were accepted in a friendly and courteous manner and, where feasible, made possible. As a group we went to the Gasthof zum Klostergarten and had lunch there. I had an apple strudel with vanilla sauce and ice cream and can only recommend it. The restaurant is also in a great location. We took a walk through the Philosopher's Path and then through the forest to the restaurant and then walked 5 minutes down to the bus stop and quickly got back into the city.

The Klostergarten Wirtschaft offers a charming setting and a wide selection of food and drinks. The quality of the food and service can vary depending on personal experience, but in general it receives positive reviews for its atmosphere and traditional cuisine. It is a popular place for locals and tourists to enjoy a meal or a drink, especially in the warmer months when you can also sit outside.

There were twelve of us in the monastery garden, but we hadn't made a reservation. The store was full of guests and there were very few staff. Nevertheless, we were warmly welcomed at the entrance, the service brought us maps and informed us about all the dishes that are available. Very spontaneous, friendly and open staff, Carmen and Meriem, served us. I can highly recommend the Braumeister roast with potato dumplings and homemade beer gravy. The well-known monastery beer tastes fantastic and the ambience of the beer garden is very special. We are completely satisfied and will be back

Beautiful retreat outside the old town, which is overrun with tourists, idyllically located next to the monastery and the food also tastes fantastic. We felt at home, especially thanks to our very hospitable and attentive waitress Carmen. We'll definitely be back!

I seldom write reviews but since I was born and raised in Frankfurt and have a daughter and granddaughter in Heidelberg I thought it was worth writing a review. We're here visiting family annually and love visiting this fine establishment. The food, atmosphere and beer are some of the very best we've had across Germany. Very traditional dishes and local specialties. Potato dumplings are excellent and children will love the spazelle. Hubby loves their beer and he's very picky. The location is just outside the main marketplace of old Heidelberg. Lovely views of the Nectar River and Heidelberg. There are many choices here but we come 3 plus times a week so hopefully that's internalized to mean it's really good. Indoor and outdoor dining, children can play, pers are welcome. Meriam offers wonderful service. Shes been here for many years on our annual visits. If you don't fall in love with this place, feel free to reach out and tell me why. We've not experienced anything negative but realize it gets really busy in wonderful weather so please have al little patience, it will be amply rewarded with fine traditional Germand food and wonderful beer and wine. To all my American and European friends and colleagues. So we have family in Germany and spend 3 months here almost every year. This wonderful restaurant and beer garden is almost a daily stop when we're visiting Heidelberg. A very short drive from old town, marketplace, is this wonderful restaurant overlooking the Neckar River on the hillside next to a Monastery. Dining inside and outside. Food and beer are traditional and top notch. Come enjoy this place. Wonderful proprietors, top notch service, excellent food and beer to die for...excellent wine too. Cheers from Germany 🇩🇪

Long waiting times, people don't pay attention to you. Staff was overwhelmed. Radler little beer, more soda, not well chilled. Aperol Spritz is just sweet, with little noticeable Prosecco. Not cold enough, ice cubes were missing. Apparently none exist. We actually wanted to order something to eat, but no one came. Eventually we were discouraged by our neighbors at the table.

Unfortunately, the beautifully located restaurant has too few service staff => It takes too long until you can order, it takes too long for the food and drinks to arrive, and it takes too long for you to pay. I then simply looked for the waitress and asked her to let me pay: I couldn't pay by card, and there wasn't enough change for my cash payment, which had to be arranged by the boss first. But the cheesecake is delicious.

Tarte flambée should rather be listed as tarte flambée, unfortunately quite dry and, above all, cold. Service was very good, friendly service :)

Disappointing. The food tastes very mediocre. It looks good in itself, but tastes really bland. The prices would be ok given the beautiful location if the food was also a highlight in terms of taste. I had cheese spaetzle, on the one hand there were no fried onions and on the other hand I have never eaten such bland spaetzle. So unfortunately we won't be coming here to eat again.

Nice beer garden. But now expensive. I find a cappuccino served in a slightly larger espresso cup for 3.50 euros to be too expensive. A 0.5 L Hefeweiss beer costs 5.20 euros. after a lot too

I always enjoy coming here, the food is nice, delicious, affordable and the service was excellent.

Delicious food, tasty and good beer and really great service. Extremely family friendly. I can only recommend!

After a long hike with a friend, we came back hungry and ate delicious tarte flambée. Very friendly innkeeper. Good value for money. We will be back

As a gardening employee in the 90s, my heart bleeds. This location's ambience is the worst I've come across. Unbearable in gastronomy. Fries are ok, as they should be. Crispy. The monastery beer has its own taste Too expensive in terms of price.

at least on January 1st. a personnel problem: the 2 visible service staff preferred to have a long conversation in a different language with a guest who arrived later than to take care of the numerous customers :-> after 25 minutes of non-observance we gave up ... at Vetters we had it after 3 minutes a beer.

Absolut Klasse Gaststätte mit Mega Tollem Ambiente mit Mollig warmer Holzheizung. Waren zu dritt dort und es war sehr lecker mit echt tollen Schnitzel, der Salat war so lecker in dieser Variante mit Meerrettich. Absolut zu empfehlen. Viele Grüße aus Stuttgart macht weiter so.

Waren zum Essen dort. Auswahl auf der Karte war sehr übersichtlich aber geschmacklich in Ordnung.

Tolle Bierprobe mit ganz tollen Bieren,mit leckerem Essen und sehr lockerem und lustigem Personal. Komme jeder gerne wieder. Kann die Bierprobe nur bestens empfehlen.❤️🍻😎
