We hadn't made a reservation, but luckily we still got a table. Friendly service, the menu arrived quickly. The half portion of sauerbraten was exactly what we were looking for. The beer that came with it was very good. Highly recommended.

The food was partly really bad. For example, salad dressing was served with the apple strudel instead of vanilla sauce. The roast goose was tough.

An absolute MUST! We came here for dinner on a recommendation and were delighted. A very nice ambiance, fantastic service, and a great menu. We opted for the French fish soup and bratwurst salad for starters and the baked duck with red cabbage and Rutscher for the main course. The dishes were beautifully presented and tasted wonderfully harmonious. The cucumber spritzer and cucumber schnapps are also highly recommended. Kudos to the kitchen and service for their excellent work ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Upon entering the establishment, I was immediately enveloped by an atmosphere that unmistakably signaled the harmonious symbiosis of culinary finesse and distinguished ambiance. No sooner had I taken my seat than Mr. Jacob Kinnell appeared, whose service can, without exaggeration, be described as almost aristocratic. With a blend of courteous restraint and precise attention, he elevated my experience to a truly contemplative level. The schnitzel I chose—a dish all too often prepared in a banal manner, thus robbing it of its inherent elegance—was presented here in a way that undoubtedly justifies the claim of fine dining. The breading was remarkably crisp, the meat as tender as a harmoniously arranged string chord; every detail seemed deliberately composed, nothing left to chance. The subtle seasoning underscored the quality of the product rather than overpowering it—a skill that is sadly rarely mastered these days. This culinary interlude was perfectly complemented by the unobtrusive, almost choreographed service of Mr. Kinnell, who was always there at the right moment without ever crossing the line into being intrusive. All in all, a visit that leaves the impression that true hospitality and sophisticated cuisine still exist – you just have to know where to find them. A restaurant I wholeheartedly recommend.

Franconian, cozy, for all generations!

Coburg's oldest inn – since 1508. Not just a traditional restaurant, but a truly exceptional place of hospitality with a select and exquisite menu focusing on Franconian cuisine, both hearty and refined. In addition, the expertly and stylishly furnished premises offer attentive and friendly service, ensuring that every need is met. Whether the "Golden Cross" opened its doors in 1508 because the citizens of Coburg had spent seven years rebuilding the section of the fortress that had burned down in 1501 – the Prince's Building and the castle chapel – and were subsequently starving, remains a mystery... Update: Unfortunately, we are now closed on Sundays due to staff shortages.

Delicious food, good beer, great location - we'll be back for the musical dinner again.

We ate at the Goldenes Kreuz on a Saturday with four people. The ambiance is impressive from the moment you step inside, thanks to the beautiful building and the cozy interior. We sat in the beer garden and immediately felt at ease. The food arrived very quickly, and the service was exceptionally friendly and attentive. The highlight was definitely the Schäufele (pork shoulder), perfectly roasted and, together with the dumplings and sauerkraut, a true culinary delight. The Wiener Schnitzel, in our case three small portions, was tender and well-prepared, although I've had better. The price of €31 seems a bit steep for what we have. Overall, the prices are quite ambitious, while the portions are rather modest. If you enjoy a good meal, you can easily add an appetizer or dessert. Including drinks, however, you quickly end up spending around €60 per person. Nevertheless, this is nitpicking: the Goldenes Kreuz is definitely worth a visit.

I was there with my clients from Asia in October. Our guests loved it. I did too. The location is ideal. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the food... Wiener schnitzel from the deep fryer, and the fried potatoes probably as well. I've never eaten fried potatoes so hard. At that price, you'd expect a different quality!

We went to the restaurant for dinner as a large group, and our expectations were fully met. The service was fast, friendly, and attentive. The food was good, home-style cooking. A very good selection, including regional specialties, and of very high quality. Overall, a visit is definitely recommended. We would be happy to return.

Very good inn with regional cuisine The kitchen offers many regional dishes. The food was very good. The chef knows his craft. Changing the side dishes was no problem, so we were able to try the Coburger Rutscher (spicy Coburg sauté pancakes). The service is very friendly and worked well despite the full dining room. The ambiance is rustic and very cozy. The price/performance ratio is reasonable. We had a lovely evening here and can recommend this inn.

We went to the dumpling buffet at the Goldenes Kreuz yesterday. A thoroughly enjoyable visit from start to finish. The star—the Coburg dumplings—were fantastic. From Schäufela (a kind of pork shoulder) to Sauerbraten (a kind of sauerbraten), everything was there—and delicious! My wife (a vegetarian) also had a good selection of vegetarian dishes. We'll definitely be back!!!

Coborn dumplings, I'll eat them all. Coborn dumplings don't taste great. But the asparagus was delicious, and the Kreuztrunk (a type of German wine) was also quite tasty. Friendly service, great atmosphere, 5 stars.

Coburger Rutscher are too bland for me personally, the food was okay – but nothing special

A very nice inn, with a truly historic ambiance. The service was extremely friendly. The meal ordered for a toddler arrived first, after only 5 minutes, which was exemplary. The light beer they offered, called Kreuztrunk, was delicious. When making the reservation, they forgot to mention that due to an event, only a small selection was being offered. Was that the reason we were already eating 35 minutes after entering the restaurant? The food was on the table 5 minutes after ordering; it couldn't have been a pleasant evening. We had to make some compromises with the food. The Sauerbraten with Coburg dumplings and red cabbage we ordered was reasonably priced by today's standards, but the portion was quite small for the roast. The meat wasn't slow-braised beef, but had an almost veal-like flavor, and the flavor was weak. The red cabbage was okay, the dumplings also quite small. This dish was the weakest point of the dinner. Perhaps we'll try it again when it's less busy. A schnitzel I ordered was also quite small and tasted average, but the potato and cucumber salad was excellent. The Kaiserschmarren (sweet pancakes) I ordered was delicious.

The service was very pleasant, everyone extremely friendly and customer-oriented! However, when I eat at a restaurant with a good reputation and high prices, I expect decent food. I ordered a vegan salad plate as my main course and was very disappointed with what was served. A mountain of green salad with three tomatoes and a bit of cucumber and peppers that I had to search for. Taste-wise, it was a complete disaster. Yes, it was a special request that wasn't on the menu, but you can judge the quality of a restaurant from a simple salad, and in this case, it wasn't particularly positive. I would have expected at least some fried vegetables or at least a few seeds for decoration. My colleagues who ordered à la carte were also unfortunately not particularly impressed by the dishes. While they had absolutely nothing to complain about, the taste was unfortunately only average. You can eat much better in and especially around Coburg for much less money. It's a shame, as we all had high hopes. Thanks to the friendly service ***

I recently had the pleasure of dining at the Goldenes Kreuz with a couple who have been close to my family, following the passing of the matriarch of our family, Mrs. Nelson. The cuisine was outstanding, and the hostess could not have been more gracious. We love visiting Coburg—it is our family home . Our only regret is knowing this may be our last trip. This restaurant experience reminded us of just how special Coburg is. It really is Germany’s best-kept secret. Thank you for the wonderful service and unforgettable meal.

The roulade is delicious, and you can add more sauce upon request. Unfortunately, the corn-fed chicken breast was very dry. The service is very attentive and friendly, especially Valentina, who served us that evening. There's a lovely Mediterranean courtyard at the rear of the inn. Highchairs and a changing table are available.

The restaurant is very centrally located and has a cozy terrace with a few tables, where we sat. The location is truly ideal. Unfortunately, the service from Thomas didn't quite meet our expectations – there's certainly room for improvement here. The prices are fair, and the food was served promptly. However, the food tasted rather average; for example, the meat was only lukewarm. Overall, it wasn't a place we would visit again.

Wir hatten einen sehr schönen Abend in diesem Restaurant direkt am Marktplatz. Wir wurden sehr freundlich empfangen und haben einen Platz auf der Terrasse bekommen. Die Bedienung war freundlich und schnell hatten wir unsere Getränke. Wir aßen den Fränkische Sauerbrsten und das Schäufele- welch ein Genuss. Zum Schluss teilten wir uns einen Kaiserschmarrn, was kein Problem darstellte. Da uns der Platz so gut gefallen hat, ließen wir den Abend bei einem guten Glas Wein ausklingen. Ein schöner Abend mit ausgesprochen freundlichen Mitarbeitern auch die Köche, hervorragendem Essen und schönem Ambiente.

A great, classic restaurant atmosphere, a friendly welcome, and a waiter who knows his job perfectly – that's exactly what you'd expect. We had three courses: a starter of cream of asparagus soup and baked cheese, a Vienna schnitzel with delicious roasted potatoes, cheese noodles, and Kaiserschmarren (sweet pancakes) for dessert. All the dishes were excellent and served promptly. Perfect.

Franconian cuisine, upscale prices. Beautifully renovated house in a great location directly adjacent to the market square. Delicious Franconian food, always with a seasonal menu. Schäuferle (a kind of sauerkraut) sells out quickly in the evenings. Reservations are recommended. The restaurant is also very popular with owners of local industrial companies.

The Gedöns, the bratwursts with cabbage, the sauerbraten, the bratwurst salad and also the Kaiserschmarrn are definitely recommended. There is also delicious beer. Very quick and friendly service. This evening (around 7:30 p.m.) we were at Goldenes Kreuz as a group of 3 and were surprised by delicious food. The atmosphere was also super pleasant. The two ladies who served us were also very respectful towards us, but I have never seen such unfriendliness as that of the gentleman who served us and also collected the money. We were visibly ignored, not taken seriously and didn't even hear a thank you - he left without a word (It wasn't the tip, at 12% it was still relatively generous for the service given). We won't come back. It's a shame, because the rest was great, but unfortunately the gentleman put us off.

During our holiday we visited Coburg and were looking for a restaurant. We ended up at Goldenes Kreuz. Service is very friendly and the environment is nice. The food looked great and tasted excellent. Unfortunately I fell ill during the night, I will spare details. Apparently something wasn't quite right with the meat?? Very unfortunate. Just wanted to report this.

We had booked a candlelight dinner today and after disappointments in various restaurants, we didn't really have any great expectations... But the golden cross surprised us very pleasantly! Ambience was very romantic... Menu was a dream… service extremely nice and attentive… all around a wonderful dinner with my husband 🫶 thank you very much for that 🙏👍

Eher zufällig sind wir bei einer Shopping- und Sightseeingtour durch Coburg im Goldenen Kreuz gelandet und waren positiv überrascht. Das älteste Gasthaus Coburgs besticht durch urige Gemütlichkeit, die mit modernen Elementen zum Wohlfühlen einladen. Sehr netter Service, wir bekamen problemlos auch ohne Reservierung noch einen Platz (allerdings würden wir Reservierung empfehlen, da gut besucht). Auch unser Hund wurde freundlich begrüßt und direkt unaufgefordert mit Wasser versorgt. Wir wollten nur eine Kleinigkeit essen und so fiel die Wahl des Mannes auf eine sehr leckere Currywurst und ich hatten den besten Kaiserschmarrn meines Lebens! Außen knusprig karamellisiert, innen fluffig locker und serviert mit drei Dips, ein absoluter Gaumenschmaus. Es war ein rundum gelungener Besuch, den wir gerne wiederholen werden.

Es handelt sich um eine schöne alte Gaststätte im Zentrum von Coburg. Ich habe hier den Salat mit Rumpsteak gegessen. Eigentlich war es eher Rumpsteak mit Salat, aber es war lecker. Der Service war freundlich.

We had a Christmas party with around 50 people and it was in the same restaurant for the third time in a row, that says it all. Markus' team does an excellent job, always helpful and friendly. Of course, the food and drinks are also of the highest quality. We think we'll come back next year.

On December 25th Christmas buffet. Food top, service top. Gladly again. There was a bit of paperwork when collecting the money, but ultimately no problem.

We came to this beautiful restaurant, we had to wait another 5 minutes for our table and we were immediately offered a beer and a sparkling wine with great warmth. We were allowed to go to our seat quite quickly, we were served extremely attentively and friendly and the result of our order was world class: no matter whether it was a typical Franconian Schäufele or a French fish soup, then a Kaiserschmarrn for dessert, the food was an absolute pleasure and we would come back at any time. The restaurant is really great and we still have a wonderful evening here😊👍!

One of the best places in Coburg to eat or have a coffee. Although it looks small from the outside, it is really huge. It is decorated with good taste, halfway between modern and traditional, and the service is really attentive. They have all kinds of environments, from more intimate places to others perfect for groups. It's not cheap, but they don't abuse its location at all, next to the market square and the impressive town hall. We used it as a meeting point, very close to the main square and the palace, and it was a great idea. Highly recommended.

The photos of the Schäufele look very good. Unfortunately it was completely dried out on the plate, both on the rind and on the meat side :((( The spinach dumplings on tomato sauce with a nut and herb topping were good. The inn has a nice atmosphere, but you can also drink beer elsewhere. We won't be coming back for dinner.

Das Ambiente ist rustikal, schön. Das Bier schmeckt und der Service ist tiptop. Aber wie kann es sein, dass das Essen in 5 Minuten auf dem Tisch ist? Das Schäufele war viel zu lange warm gehalten worden und hatte eine dicke, trockene Fleischseite. Das war kein Stück Fleisch, das man (zahlenden!) Gästen auf den Teller legen sollte - außer, es ist dem Haus egal, ob man wieder kommt. Sehr schade!

Food wasn't my taste. Meat was tender and dumplings were ok, little sauce and I immediately received more sauce for my dish upon request. Staff was on point. Chairs weren't the newest and the space was a bit tight. Price-performance ratio doesn't fit. Very expensive, maybe because of the city center. I've eaten much better for the money we spent and you can only stay for 2 hours. This trend is unfortunately common...very sad! I won't be using this place anymore, sorry!

I was in the golden cross during an excursion. A clear menu where you don't know what to choose. I then decided on the sauerbraten. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to its name and could have been a little more acidic. The meat was still delicious. The Coburg dumplings as a side dish were absolutely delicious. You have to eat them. The red cabbage was also super tasty. I would come back there at any time.
