Berlin charm and perfect Austrian cuisine

It was a wonderful evening! Although we would have preferred to sit at a different table, it didn't bother us at all. We had the Hungarian beef goulash, the Wiener Schnitzel, and the boiled beef with pumpkin seed oil. Everything was absolutely delicious, everything was fantastic – and the service was wonderful, too. The simple question of whether we enjoyed our meal made the evening even more pleasant. Unfortunately, you rarely hear such a thing in restaurants these days. You don't have to do much in the service – sometimes just a small gesture like that is enough. We'll gladly come back, also because of the delicious Schremser beer.

We went there spontaneously. Apparently, you can't get in without a reservation. We were allowed to sit down at the table. The food was great.

Rustic atmosphere, delicious food, and service just like in Berlin. But that's what I like about Berlin. We were the last ones there, weren't rushed to leave, and of course, there was Austrian music playing, followed later by Nick Cave to help everyone get back to the party. Eat like a king in Vienna! Delicious schnitzel in a cozy atmosphere.

Most people probably come for the schnitzel – and rightly so! It really is very good: large, crispy, tender, and juicy. Unfortunately, the side dishes can't keep up. The potato salad tastes of almost nothing, and the mixed salad is a disaster: huge leaves in a small bowl, the dressing buried at the bottom – all in all, very uninspired. The Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) were also disappointing. They seemed to have been prepared in advance and then simply topped with cheese – unfortunately, not a culinary highlight. The cucumber salad, on the other hand, was quite good. The service was friendly and attentive, which is definitely worth mentioning. The restaurant itself, however, is rather cold and simply furnished – almost everything is white, which doesn't create a particularly cozy atmosphere. In conclusion: I would definitely come back for the excellent schnitzel – but unfortunately not for the side dishes or the ambiance.

The service and the owner were appalling. After 90 minutes, we were asked to get up mid-meal because the table was being used by many people throughout the evening. After that, we were addressed informally and kicked out.

A delicious schnitzel, but unfortunately, the service was a bit of a letdown. The schnitzel was large in portion and can be easily shared. While the food was great, our overall experience was disappointing thanks to the server who took our order. We came there with our parents to celebrate their anniversary. The server was rude and got irritated by basic our questions. But here’s the best part- he only became friendly closer to the time when the cheque was asked for, hoping for a tip. While we gave the tip, we noticed this behaviour across Germany where the behaviour suddenly switches closer to the time when you call for the bill. Will perhaps keep an eye out next time onwards for this kind of behaviour switches around tipping. 😏

Good thing I was really hungry. Excellent value for money, and the portions are huge. The waitress is fantastic.

Six of us, plus our baby, were here on a Sunday evening. Everyone had different main courses, and each of us was very happy with our choices... :) Unfortunately, we didn't have enough room for dessert, even though they sounded very tempting. This certainly won't be our last visit!! ...also thanks to the friendly staff... :)

We had a wonderful evening at Alt Wien. They serve the best Wiener Schnitzel in Berlin! I've tried all the restaurants, and Alt Wien is the clear winner! They also serve the extremely delicious "Zirbenschnaps," an Austrian specialty. We stayed for a long time after dinner and were the last guests. The team at Alt Wien let us sit even though the restaurant was already closed, so thank you so much for that! See you next time :)

Good Germano- Austro food. Good portions and price commensurate with the quality. Good friendly service too. No complaints and recommend for traditional hearty fayre.

The service was excellent and very friendly. The food was outstanding. I'd choose a different wine next time (purely a matter of taste). When there are large groups, it gets a bit louder, but not too bad.

A chance encounter while looking for a good Austrian restaurant half an hour away. We went for a tasting for a birthday party. Reservations are highly recommended; it was quick and easy to make online. The menu is excellent. The food looks and tastes excellent, straightforward, one of the best Wiener schnitzels we've had in a long time, a visual eye-catcher. The value for money is definitely right here. We're looking forward to our next pre-booked visit to Alt-Wien in December 2024. We'll be back several times. After dinner, the lovely shops nearby invite you to browse.

Absolutely the best schnitzel in Berlin! Cucumber salad is always really tasty with it and the potato salad is also great! I love it and no one else in Berlin can match it! I grew up on the Austrian border and finally found my fix 🤣🙌🏻! After 15 years in Berlin 🤣🙌🏻! At first impression the service staff always seems very grumpy and unfriendly but it always turns out to be spee sweet ;)! In real Viennese terms, you probably just don't understand them like we Bavarians do ;)! Order otherwise it may happen that you don't get a seat!

Super delicious food in a beautiful ambience

I've been coming back for years...and I'm always happy to return! Unbeatable Wiener Schnitzel... there's no better one in Vienna or Berlin! And the staff still have a touch of Viennese humor...

We were looking forward to a relaxed evening with Austrian food. It's a restaurant with good food, which is to be expected given the prices. However, I wouldn't go there again. The waiter was listless and unfriendly. It couldn't have been more impersonal. The food lived up to expectations. There are many more interesting places with good food in Berlin.

Dear Alt Wien team, we were very disappointed with the service yesterday. And it wasn't the first time; I've been a guest at Alt Wien for over 10 years. I'm from Vienna myself, and I can't understand the unfriendly service. We had to wave several times to get our attention and be served. In the end, I even honestly told the waiter in question that I wasn't satisfied with his service. And the restaurant wasn't full.

Good prices for good food. We felt very comfortable. The service could be a bit more empathetic, but that doesn't preclude a return visit.

As always, both the Wiener Schnitzel and the excellent Austrian beer were a real treat. The quality of the food and hospitality has been consistently high for years. Please keep it that way.

Apparently, my question about ketchup had aroused the interest of schnitzel purists, which resulted in an indignant "No" and, after my protest, a €1.50 surcharge on the bill. As a disciplinary measure?

Wonderful service, delicious food. We had the Wiener Schnitzel and the Zwiebelrostbraten (onion roast beef), highly recommended. To finish, we had the Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancakes), what more could you want?

Stay clear. I’ve never experienced such unprofessional and dismissive service at a restaurant before. As a foreign guest I felt genuinely unwelcome, the staff showed a complete lack of courtesy and hospitality. While the schnitzel was fine, the overall experience left such a bad taste that I’d much rather go hungry than return.

Wonderful authentic old school Austrian food.

Our visit was, unfortunately, quite disappointing. The table assigned to us was far too large for the four people announced, and was located right by the entrance, overlooking the construction site in front of the restaurant. The food itself – with the exception of the Wiener Schnitzel – unfortunately didn't live up to our expectations. Both the roast beef with onions, drowned in a rather bland sauce, and the veal strips, which were overcooked and therefore tasted very dry, were both disappointing in terms of taste. One had the impression that any flavor was lacking... Given the prices, one could and should have expected more. When the waiter (very nice, but inexperienced) started clearing the plates while one of the guests at the table was still eating, we knew we definitely wouldn't be coming back.

It's a great place to go. Delicious food at fair prices, with a great atmosphere and friendly service. I especially recommend the Wiener Schnitzel, which I currently consider the best in town.

Really great - Schnitzel was on point

Well, I'll start by saying that this is the second time I've been to this place, the first time I had a great time, the food and service were excellent, the waiting times were just a little long, but it could mean that everything was prepared at the moment, therefore fresh and tasty. Unfortunately the second time I went back with friends, leaving aside the food, the experience turned out not to be bad, but terrible, AND IF THERE WAS A POSSIBILITY TO LEAVE ZERO STARS I WOULD DO SO. We were served after 1 hour of waiting, the food was perfect. The time to pay came. The waiter who had served us all evening, who was already pushy and grumpy when we were ordering, came to us to make us pay. We asked to split the bill. None of us left a tip. We are 3 out-of-town students, we had spent 35+ euros for just a first course (unfortunately the place is a little expensive) and we didn't feel like leaving a tip. At this moment, this waiter, 1.75 m tall, about 40 years old, bald, medium-long beard mixed gray-black, dressed all in black, explicitly asks us for a tip, being rude to us, telling us that if we are students and cannot afford a tip, "we should stay home with mom and dad". This guy is not even German, by the way, and yet he said "even if you are foreign, we are in Germany here", as if to say that a tip was something mandatory. I will never go back, and I am sorry that the reputation of a place is ruined by a beggar like that. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing but shame in asking for extra money for no reason from some students who just want to enjoy a quiet evening during an intense study session.

After tasting several Wiener Schnitzels in various restaurants in Berlin, the verdict is clear. This is where you'll find the best! Add to that a fittingly rustic ambiance, exceptionally friendly staff, and fast and attentive service. What more could you want?!

Great food but terrible experience. Very grumpy waiter, who makes you feel uncomfortable and answers you in a rude and mean way. If you don't leave a tip (despite the slow service, 1h waiting for a cutlet), they will answer you by yelling at you and making you run away. Terrible experience.

Food was good but we had too long of a waiting time and the service was not good. The bald waiter with a slightly white beard was not patient in any way. We were also bullied by him into leaving a tip. We are in Europe, not in America. I will not be intimidated into paying more. We paid what was written on the menu. He also said that if we don’t have money for a tip to stay home. I find this outrageous and disrespectful. I urge the owners to have a talk with this person because it was a terrible end to a nice evening!

Sadly we were very disappointed with the food at Gasthaus Alt Wien as we had high expectations. The appetizers were either drenched in oil, tasteless or had sauces that were basically like water. It didn’t get better with the main course either. Again sauces were bland and thin like water, meat chewy, potato salad sweet instead of sour and salty. Just overall really terrible food, would not go back.

Everything was OK but for the prices I would have expected the food to be tastier and more plentiful and the service to be nicer.

It's okay... The food is quite tasty, but the service and atmosphere are rather poor. Typical Prenzlauer Berg crowd with loud children, and the prices are also reasonable for the area...

If only the plates had been big enough, we would have slumped between the two schnitzels on each plate. Simply. Simply. Fantastic.

The food is delicious, especially the authentic Wiener Schnitzel, which is exceptionally good. Highly recommended. Advance reservations are essential, otherwise there won't be any seats available.

What was once my favorite restaurant in Berlin for traditional German food will probably not be visited by me for some time now... Despite a reservation and an early table at 6:30 p.m., it took about 70 minutes on a Thursday until we and everyone else got our food one by one. Asparagus, which submerged the entire plate and had no taste, as did the hollandaise. It was incredibly loud, there was great displeasure from the guests at the tables next to us and unfortunately overall it was a disappointment. Also: asparagus WITH schnitzel approx. 34€ and asparagus WITHOUT schnitzel approx. 27€! 27€ for 5 watery asparagus… unfortunately a no go.

Beautiful shop, great service! The food is ok, but I expected a little more quality for the money. Has and not convinced.

Went there with a reservation and asked whether we could also sit outside instead: not a problem. There was also no time slot/limit as some other reviews suggested. Friendly waiter, didn’t talk much and was straight to the point. Maybe some ppl regard this as rude. We liked it. Good draft beer and huge, thin veal schnitzel. Really good! Maybe not enough lemon, but extra lemon was served quick. Espresso a little soso. Prices normal.

Worst schnitzel and fries ever.

The schnitzels were, as always, very tasty. The cream slices and the dumplings were felt to be not seasoned enough. It was a bit loud in the room. It's a shame that you have to leave after 2 hours, it's not very comfortable.

Very good wiener schnitzel. We waited a lot, Too much and we paid one schnitzel more. And we couldn't order the dessert because the kitchen was closed, and they didn't say anything about the closing time of the kitchen

We won't be coming back, even though we always enjoyed staying here. Unfortunately we have been disappointed again... The service has decreased massively. We were left stranded repeatedly because the staff was inattentive. If you point out that something was served incorrectly, you will receive an incomprehensible explanation and as a guest it is essentially your own fault. We felt increasingly uncomfortable and the mood at the table was severely affected by the unprofessional behavior. There is also no indication that the kitchen is closed - we would have liked to have dessert. It has become virtually impossible to take up to 3 courses. Actually something every restaurant would be grateful for these days. We would have liked to have consumed more. I'll save myself and my family from having my evening ruined for a bill of 100 euros in the future. Just a shame!

If you are looking for a typical Viennese restaurant you will find it here. If the Senate improves the parking options, it will also be worth a trip for people from out of town. Even for Berlin with its many restaurants, a stylish Viennese restaurant like this is a rarity.
