Gänsedieb in Dresden

Very great, attractive restaurant, rustic and delicious food.

Nice terrace, very good service and decent food in a prime location The term “Gänsedieb” is reminiscent of times when innkeepers tried to give their restaurants particularly imaginative names. Here the restaurant is named after the fountain of the same name on the square in front, which goes back to a legend from the early 16th century and was built in 1879. Due to its central location in the city center, the "Gänsethieb" is often visited by tourists, but is also not avoided by locals. When I was looking for a suitable place for lunch on an Easter Sunday in beautiful weather, I was very undecided and didn't even have the "goose thief" on my radar. As I cycled past, I noticed the inviting terrace with places in the sun, in the shade and in the partial shade. Unlike many restaurants in the area that use a lot of plastic in the outdoor area in the form of polyrattan chairs and wood-look tables, the "Gänsedieb" only offered real wood furniture, which made my decision. I received a very friendly welcome from the attentive waitress and always felt well looked after and cared for throughout my entire stay. But I don't want to rule out the possibility that I would have ordered water with the wine, a dessert after the meal and an espresso with the bill if I had been asked. But this is not a service error, but a question of the restaurant management's instructions. In the standard menu you can actually find some dishes that do justice to the restaurant's name. As for the rest of the menu, I was happy that a seasonal menu expanded the program and I was able to order the schnitzel with fresh German asparagus. But I would have liked more asparagus variations. The selection was limited to asparagus with or without Viennese-style pork schnitzel. The prices are within the usual range for Dresden city center, but in some cases they are noticeably higher than those of comparable restaurants. The above-average range of open, affordable wines should be highlighted positively. My food was served extremely shortly after I ordered, but without any noticeable loss of quality. There's nothing like good preparation. Despite the different sizes, the asparagus spears were largely evenly cooked and still slightly "al dente", which I much prefer to being cooked until soft. There was also nothing wrong with the schnitzel and the potatoes. I didn't have any great demands on the hollandaise, the only thing that bothered me was that the schnitzel was bathed in it. Breading soaked in sauce is neither taste nor aesthetically acceptable to me. I also had to laboriously cut the schnitzel on top of the potatoes. The problem could be easily solved by serving the sauce and, if necessary, the potatoes separately. Since I had nothing to seriously complain about, was overall satisfied and can imagine visiting again, I rate the "Gänsedieb" with a very favorable four stars.

During our visit to Dresden, we visited this restaurant twice, and we found it by accident. The food is good and the best item is the goose. Large proportions, perfect for beer. The service was nice, helpful and fast. Even though there was a lot of traffic on the first day, we were served quickly.

We stopped in spontaneously around 5 p.m. on a Monday during a visit to Dresden, and even though we didn't have a reservation, we were greeted and served very warmly by the staff! The food was delicious. We like it when the menu isn't too long, so at least everything is fresh! A big thank you to the kitchen team too! Good value for money! "Gänsedieb" is already on our wishlist for next time! Thanks for a lovely evening.

My wife and I spontaneously went to the goose thief on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at around 6 p.m. For the first time in Dresden and hungry for sightseeing and shopping, we googled and decided on the goose thief. We were warmly greeted by Mr. Reck, who also served us later on, and pointed out that it gets full after 6:30 p.m., but we could sit at a small high table with bar stools if we wanted. No problem and at this table Mr. Reck gave us a wonderful evening in an absolutely recommendable restaurant with his open, communicative and friendly manner as well as the cuisine at Gänsedieb. If you are in Dresden, definitely go, but make a reservation in advance.

Very nice service. Full understanding for the child. Very tasty food - portions large enough. Prices quite high, but you can find something for every budget. First of all, you can eat something from traditional German cuisine that is not wurst. Spacious interior, which is not the norm in restaurants near the center of Dresden.

Today we had lunch at the "Gänsedieb" with 9 people. A big compliment to the service 1. 3 guests were there 30 minutes before the ordered time, but that wasn't a problem at all. The table was ready and we were already getting our drinks until the rest arrived. 2. a guest arrived late but the food had already been ordered for him. When the waiter responsible for our table noticed that the guest was still not there but that the food was ready to be served, he came to us on his own initiative and suggested not serving this one portion yet so that it would not get cold. Thank you very much for so much care and understanding, that has become very rare. 3.we all got our food and dessert at the same time. All in all, a very successful birthday meal, everyone enjoyed it very much and everyone felt more than comfortable. Thank you very much and see you soon

A small fine restaurant. The menu is very clear. Staff very friendly. We got a table without a reservation. The food: pink fried duck breast - simply amazing and very, very tasty. I can only recommend it! Or turkey liver, also very good. For two people we paid just under €65.00 including drinks.

Quaint restaurant in the heart of Dresden. Max. 10 minutes to Prager Straße, max. 10 minutes to the Elbe - each on foot. The service, the waiters are really good, old school. Very attentive and friendly. The furnishings are dark wood. Nevertheless, it is not dark here thanks to the many large windows. We ate the goose pan and the duck leg. Very tasty and perfectly prepared. Everything is really great!

There were 5 of us at the goose thief in the time after Christmas. The food was OK (but not good enough for the price), but the service was catastrophic. On the one hand, the waiter was incredibly arrogant (two people only had the same thing once as a small portion, the difference couldn't be seen at first glance - when asked, not entirely seriously, they just said "you get what you ordered"). The negative highlight, however, was that we ordered a Kaiserschmarrn for our 3-year-old child (and we made this clear when ordering). When the food came, the waiter put it in front of her and after everyone else had gotten their food, he said that there were rum raisins in Kaiserschmarrn (even though it was clearly food for a small child). There was neither an apology nor an offer to bring the food back without rum raisins. We will not be coming back and can only advise anyone with children and/or a desire for good service not to eat here. We also didn't find a changing table (no longer understandable in 2025).

I was there on a Monday evening. I was looking forward to the goose brawn, but I would also have liked to eat the goose leg, which unfortunately the service employee didn't offer to me. (wasn't on the map) The brawn was hardly edible because it only tasted like vinegar. No trace of the goose taste. The meat was very dry. The service employee said that brawn must be overly acidic... when asked in the kitchen it turned out not to be. There was just way too much vinegar in it. As compensation, I was offered an espresso. Overall, I was disillusioned with the ambience, the service and, of course, the quality of the food. It's a shame, as I had fond memories of the goose thief. This is now the second restaurant after the Freiberger Schankhaus, which I cannot recommend in the city center.

Nice restaurant with very friendly staff and good food

Afternoon sin: Kaiserschmarrn & Eierschecke Let's keep it short and save ourselves unnecessary words. The cheeky and friendly service at Gänsedieb doesn't lose that when they serve a great egg pie or a hearty portion of caramelized Kaiserschmarrn to make you fall on your knees at coffee time. The latter in particular is worth a trip.

Ate very tasty. Despite the Christmas hustle and bustle, we received very friendly service.

We just wanted something to drink - the service was poor We just wanted something to drink and sat at the high table. My wife's gloves and hat fell off. She hadn't noticed. When the service employee served the drinks, he stood right next to the items and noticed them. Instead of picking it up, he just said to my wife, "You dropped something." A bit rude.

We ate there on Boxing Day and loved it. Our table was reserved for 11:30 a.m. and everything went smoothly. We chose the goose menu and it was delicious! The quality of the food was excellent, the goose tender and perfectly cooked. The service was friendly.

In general, everything is delicious, home-made, the portions are large, you can even take a shank for two.

Absolutely delicious goose! We had dinner at Gänsedieb for Christmas and really enjoyed it 🪿 There were waitresses with humor 🫶🏻 Gladly again next year! (You could also have the goose leg packed to take away and help yourself to a selection of other dishes if you didn't want to eat goose.)

Only been there for a small lunch snack. There was homemade Kaiserschmarrn. This was really tasty and therefore receives a clear recommendation. In general, the lunch offer is really a good value for money. There was pork schnitzel on offer, with fries and a drink for just under €13. This is absolutely perfect for Dresden city center. (You could even hear the chef making the schnitzel in the background.) Gladly again, also for other dishes, if it suits you again. Service was quick and polite, so top!

I had schnitzel and sausage and it was delicious. The food came out a little slowly, but the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice. The schnitzel had cheese, and the potato salad had butter, so it was soft and sweet and delicious.

Considering the name of the restaurant, one should assume that the goose leg was properly procured....it definitely tasted delicious. 🤔🦊 Rustic, cozy atmosphere, nice and quick service, prices at a high level.....Dresden. 😉

I can only recommend this restaurant. The food was served quickly. I tried the turkey liver and have to say it was the best liver I have ever eaten. It was very tender and the delicious mashed potatoes and red cabbage were incredible. The service is just like the food, the employees are very friendly. I also found it very nice that it wasn't as bright as in other restaurants. If you want to have a romantic evening, this is the right place for you. We'll definitely be back.

I had the zucchini schnitzel. That was filling. So the portion was decent. Unfortunately the vegetable rice was a bit too weak. That's why there is a star deduction. The service was very nice and everything went quickly. So we didn't have to wait long for the food.

The food was very tasty (sauerbraten and vegetarian zucchini schnitzel). Dessert was excellent (Dresdener Eierschecke). Portion sufficient and tasted very good. Service was fine and friendly. Paid around €60 for two large beers.

The food was quite good, but the service was suuuper slow. We ordered strudel to be brought after our food, and when we were done the waiter said it was never ordered. 20 minutes later, we're still waiting and had to go already. We asked for the check, and the waiter suggested we can pay and leave, but have to pay for strudel as well. Ridiculously slow and bad service, and all this during Monday afternoon, with only 4 tables taken in the whole restaurant.
