El Gallo Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau

We tried a wide variety of different dishes. The tuna salad can be made much better at home (almost no dressing and just two cans of tuna slapped on top). The tapas were very, very disappointing. The prawns (€17!) and the squid were practically thawed from a Lidl frozen bag, and the squid was even burnt. The fajita carne, on the other hand, was quite good, but that's at least what you'd expect for the hefty price of almost €27. The dry white wine was so undrinkable that we had to leave it undrinked. The ambiance was quite nice, the service was friendly, but not in the best mood (it happens sometimes, but that's totally fine). The total of €86 with tip was quite a blow at the end.

Disgusting not a single Mexican, no wonder it tastes disgusting

We ate here for the third time tonight, but the service was incredibly rude. After waiting 45 minutes for a drink, I was verbally abused. They must have passed us by at least 30 times. Even though the food is delicious, they don't seem to care about foreigners!

The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the sauces are delicious. They also always have Happy Hour cocktails.

The staff doesn't like foreigners. You're ignored, and if you ask for a drink after 45 minutes, the waiter walks away!

You should make a reservation in advance if you're coming with a larger group. Otherwise, you'll always find a spot for two, at least most of the time. We've been here several times now and are incredibly satisfied every time. The food is delicious and the service is simply friendly. However, I find it a bit warm inside in the summer; if you sit in the back, it feels cool in the front but not in the back. The outdoor area is usually full, but super nice.

I asked for menu number 45, which specifically features mushrooms. I got a very spicy vegetable mix on my plate and no mushrooms (at all)... no reaction from the staff :(

We had a surprisingly delicious meal late Sunday night. Lots of food and an extensive drinks menu. The service was friendly and fast. And as for the food, it was delicious. 👍👍👍 The music could have been a bit louder; it was a bit too quiet. 😎

I went at lunchtime and sat where I thought was best. The service was adequate, I'd say. The problem is that I spent more than €35 on tacos and a beer. Honestly, I went home starving. With that money, I would have eaten wonderfully elsewhere.

Amazingly fast service, kind staff and very good food. Would definitely recommend. We had the nachos con queso (a lot of cheese and good toppings) and my main was the burrito con carne. Couldn’t finish it, it’s huge but delicious at the same time!

I'll start by saying that this will not be as good as authentic or even Southern Californian Mexican food. You're in Germany, it's going to 1) not be as authentic and 2) be more expensive. That said, we really liked it! We sat outside because the weather was nice and enjoyed the patio despite it being near a fairly busy street corner. The service was super friendly and humored our awful attempts at speaking Mexican Spanish to them. The food, while pricy, was surprisingly solid. I think it's the first Mexican meal we had in Germany that was pretty good! And the margaritas were also delicious, so that may have had something to do with it. Overall, very pleased with this recommendation from a Freiburg local!

The food is good, and the cocktails are very tasty and very well priced for Germany.

The terrace is pleasant and the service was quick, but the food was poor, especially considering the prices. They charged us €8 for a bottle of water and added a 10% service charge, which wasn't previously indicated. The bill only showed the total amount, with no breakdown; we had to specifically ask for the detailed receipt to see the charges. Overall, it was not transparent. I wouldn't return.

All in all, it's okay and tasty. Especially if you like cocktails. On some days, there's a great happy hour all evening long. 🍹

I find the food very tasty and I didn't have to wait long for it.

Very unfriendly staff. We weren't allowed to choose a table, even though the restaurant's management would have allowed it. They asked us to sit at a table that was almost on the street. Never....

An excellent dinner. We ordered nachos and chicken tacos, and they were very good. Average prices. A highly recommended place.

Tasty food. Service a little slow. We found it odd that at the end they gave us the total amount to pay rather than the details.

Very busy restaurant. We ate well. We hadn't booked and were lucky to get a table on a Saturday evening. All the waitresses spoke English because we don't speak German. The plates were very generous. The service was good. A little longer for dessert but the donuts were delicious (homemade). We paid 126 euros for 4 people but we didn't receive the bill in detail.

Very delicious expensive prices

was a regular, despite the salty food, until they decided to seat a couple instead of a a single person even though i was waiting longer. When i complained, all of a sudden no one understood english anymore. 👎🏽

Went there for a Mexican experience. Honestly, if someone says they loved the Mexican food here, they probably haven’t had authentic Mexican cuisine. That’s not to say it wasn’t tasty—it just didn’t feel genuinely Mexican, more like it had a German twist. The atmosphere was fine, nothing particularly special. The service, however, was excellent. One woman was handling all the tables and doing an exceptional job. If you’re looking for delicious food—not necessarily Mexican—this place is worth a try.

Not a good experience🪰 After we arrived and were assigned a table by a not very motivated server, we ordered our drinks. When they arrived, the first negative experience occurred: a fly was frozen in my companion's ice cube at the top of her Kiba juice. When we wanted to report this, we had to fight for the waiter's attention, and when we complained, we received no apology, just a joke. When the food finally arrived, which looked really good, it started again: a hair in the salad (definitely not ours) and a piece of plastic wrap in the lukewarm food. While the taste was quite good up until then, it somewhat spoiled our appetites afterward. We ask that more attention be paid to hygiene standards in the future. We are disappointed, as we had heard so many good things about it.

Thanks to Mehmet, we spent a wonderful evening at "El Gallo" in Freiburg. The food was perfect, light and wholesome, the wine was excellent, and the best part was the service! Thank you for the lovely evening👍‼️

I'd like to write a review, but I didn't get a chance to order a drink or eat anything. First, we were asked to give up our seats. No problem, but then we sat at the table for two. And waited... I've been working in the restaurant industry for 30 years. We moved to the neighborhood a year ago and finally wanted to try the cocktails and the food. Since I only have fond memories of Mexico... Unfortunately, no one came for quite a while, even though I made eye contact with the waiter. Hey, how long are you supposed to wait when the waitresses stand in the entrance picking their noses and ignoring you? Nope... Sorry... I'm used to better... What a shame

The food was good, and the service was good. The ambiance wasn't new, but it was okay. Only one restroom, so it could be a bit cramped. Yes, we would eat here again.

I went to lunch with my friends and it was delicious! (Personal recommendation #414) The large selection of food and drinks made it hard for us to navigate the menu, but the young man with glasses was able to help us out. The value for money was completely justified. We'll definitely be back. 👍🏼

A solid Mexican restaurant in central Freiburg. The atmosphere is lively and inviting, with a rustic interior and typical decor. The menu offers classic Tex-Mex dishes like fajitas, enchiladas, and burritos, and the portions are generous. It's not very authentic—it's more tailored to Central European expectations. That's not necessarily a bad thing; it tastes delicious. The cocktails are full of flavor! :-)

We ordered some drinks and they were not up to the mark. The Cosmopolitan just tasted like sugar syrup. Thankfully food tasted better! It was not a very popular time so the people wanted to do things very quickly and finish their work.

Disappointed with the experience. Waitress not at all welcoming, not a smile. Very slow service. I asked for still water, received sparkling water, and the coke was bubble free. I've been an el Gallo fan for ages but, I have to say, the place has become a bit more expensive and the portions are smaller than before. In terms of taste, it is still my favorite Mexican. The cocktails are great too! At prices of 22-35€ per meal, it's just a bit expensive for 4 people. 🫰that's why I don't go there as often anymore and only gets 4 stars.

Very good food, good service. But ventilation definitely needs to be installed, the old windows are of no use at all. It's always so stuffy and warm there. That's why you don't like sitting for a little longer.

Disgusting food. Are these supposed to be churros with Nutella? 7.50 euros. Avoid.

The food was tasteless, mushy and they couldn't even get the fundamentals right (they used parsley instead of coriander). I mentioned this to a member of staff and he apologised but fixated on the fact that I'd mentioned using parsley instead of coriander and said that he could bring out the coriander if I wanted. When the bill came, I asked for them to remove my meal from the bill as I'd only had one bite of it. In response to this, they first told me that it was impossible to do as only the manager could remove an item from the bill and the manager wasn't there. Then they advised that if they took it off it'd come out of their wages. Then they became very aggressive and told me it was my problem not theirs and it wasn't normal to take something off the bill in Germany. Overall an extremely poor and disappointing experience.

Whenever we are in Freiburg, we eat here and it always tastes very good. The portions are very good and the prices are ok. 1 star is deducted because the restaurant is not heated and unfortunately the coziness is lost. Please don’t skimp on heating in winter 😉

Staff not welcoming or smiling. Restricted space with waiters forced to jostle you every time you pass. In the discovery platter, cuisine bathed in sauce, poorly cooked vegetables despite some relatively good elements.

There were 7 of us there on Thursday evening. To date, 6/7 people have suffered from gastrointestinal illness! The health department should take a look at the store...

Actually everything was great. Actually a big recommendation. Food very tasty and cocktails cheap. But: there were eight of us there the day before yesterday. Tonight five of us had diarrhea and vomited. I suspect there is a connection, although of course I can't prove it.

Delicious main dishes and nice service. Large portions that fill you up well. As a starter I took a queso de cabra. However, I strongly advise against this as you just end up with a very boring white brine cheese that is really tough and simply doesn't deserve the name "Queso de cabra" on the tapas menu. @Elgallo: Please just don't offer it at all. Or if you have cheese that tastes like goat cheese. Instead, just go for patatas bravas.

I love to dine in here with my friends when we are craving for mexican food. but today we had a bad experience. the waiter was very impolite, we came at 16:10 and they said we only allowed to stay untill 18:00 because tables are reserved then. thinking that we still have 1 and a half hour time to eat and drink we decided to stay. The first waiter took our order for drinks but we needed a little time to decide for food. after 5 minutes the second waiter came and took our order. after almost one hour of waiting for our food the first waiter came to us and told us that we should go because we just ordered only drinks and its almost 18:00. we told him that we already ordered and the second waiter took our order, and it came out that the second waiter forgot to told the kitchen about our order. Our food came one hour late and we literally have to eat fast because we should bill out in less than 30 Minutes. I wasnt able to enjoy the food that I always order here that i really like. when we were going to pay, the third waiter came to bill us out. I noticed that he was charging me for the drink that my friend ordered and he just answered " es ist doch egal". I dont know if my cocktail was same price as what my friend ordered but when it was, he couldve explained it. after we paid he didnt even said thank you or goodbye just like what normal people do. the two starts is for the second waiter who was the only nice person there and took time to apologize for his mistake. We just wanted to have a nice meal after a long day of work. this poor service and bad experience just ruined our evening and brought us in bad mood. I dont think we are coming back here again.

I was actually skeptical at first because of some of my friends' experiences, but I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, the food was delicious, but unfortunately my food arrived cold. Unfortunately the ribs were also a little dry. We were also a large group and unfortunately the kitchen didn't manage to bring the food at anywhere near the same times. While others were almost finished, others hadn't even had any food yet. Basically still very nice service, the ambience is quite okay. I think I'll give the restaurant another chance, but then only with two or a maximum of four people ;)

Das Essen hat immer lecker geschmeckt da waren wir uns alle einig! Aber die Portionen wurden immer weniger! Am 2.Tag bestellten wir 3x den tollen Salat und es kam an den gleichen Tisch unterschiedlich Teller!!! Am Tag zuvor war der Salat groß und mächtig. Wir haben nach gefragt und es wurde ein Löffel sag ich mal, dazu getan. Gleichzeitig mussten wir den zugewiesenen Tisch (6er) wechseln in einen 4er Tisch. Alles gut! Aber es war nur das 2 Personen -STAMMGÄSTE die 2 x die Woche kommen-wie uns nach Nachfrage erklärt wurde sich da breit machten. Schönen Dank auch. Ebenso bekammen die meisten einen Absacker. Wir nur am 1. Tag. Naja haben ja auch nur unser Geld hin gebracht😀Bedienungen waren toll und super nett. Chef schaute auch im größten Trubel nur zu. Jetzt genug. Das Essen war gut.
