Donisl in München

Reserving a table was no problem despite the Christmas market. The Helle beer is highly recommended and reasonably priced for its location. The roast pork with dumplings and coleslaw was impeccable. The atmosphere is lovely; certainly not a typical tourist trap, but rather a traditional Bavarian restaurant.

Fantastic experience! The food was delicious and arrived quickly. Our waiter, Maxim, was incredibly attentive and friendly. Great atmosphere and highly recommended! I can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

The pancake soup is the worst soup I have ever tried in my life! The restaurant is well located and the environment (dining area and toilet) is clean and pleasant. Just the soup is so bad!

Donisl Kulinarium is highly recommended, as is the Donisl itself as a restaurant – wonderful food, top service and fantastic hosts... a big shout-out to Franziska Kohlpaintner and Peter Reichert.

We recently had the pleasure of eating at Donisl. Although we had a reservation, we were given a table right by the back exit, which was quite uncomfortable and drafty. The food was generally good, but the portions were no bigger than a child's portion. Considering the size and taste, the price was completely exorbitant. Paying €28 for a meal that's no bigger than a child's portion and not even a culinary highlight is outrageous. We both agree that we won't be eating there again. It's a shame, really, because if the portions had been larger and the main dining area, with its lovely Christmas decorations, had been more inviting, we would certainly have come more often.

Charming Bavarian location in the center of Munich, even with an open "garden" (in summer when the weather is nice)

Donisl was and always is worth a visit. We were there recently with 7 people, had a beer keg at our table (always a sight to behold ;)) and the food was excellent!

Nice place and friendly service, but the food is mediocre, at least in our experience.

1. Restrooms are chargeable, even for guests. 2. The waiter chatted with colleagues the whole time, even when we called for him. 3. The water wasn't hot enough for the black tea they offered. 4. Mulled wine from the restaurant can only be ordered/consumed outside, even if you're having it in the dining room. + The Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes) were good. Not recommended.

When looking for traditional Bavarian cuisine and ambiance that's one not to be missed. Idealy located just at the out bound of the UBan. And not in the tourist hand book

A very nice and modernized traditional Bavarian restaurant right on Marienplatz. Friendly and fast service. We were there to play Schafkopf (a Bavarian card game).

Beautiful building, lovely atmosphere, friendly service. Spätzle and schnitzel were delicious, pork knuckle was good, but the dumplings tasted like Pfanni ready-made dumplings.

My visit to Donisl in Munich was a complete success. The ambiance is charming and cozy—you immediately feel welcome. The food was outstanding: fresh, flavorful, and typically Bavarian, prepared with meticulous attention to detail. I particularly appreciated the friendly and attentive service: the staff were attentive and courteous, creating a pleasant atmosphere. I also found the value for money to be very fair. I highly recommend Donisl and am already looking forward to my next visit.

The ambiance and decor at Donisl are truly lovely, and the welcome is very warm. However, this positive impression quickly faded. The service wasn't very friendly, and we had to argue several times. Furthermore, we had to wait a long time for our food, part of which only arrived after we asked repeatedly, and the rest was unfortunately lukewarm. We had to argue with the waiter about this as well.

As a Munich native, I'd never been to Donisl before. Since it's such a tourist trap, nothing had ever drawn me there. But we still had some Oktoberfest vouchers that needed to be used there. And I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised. We had reserved in advance and got a table downstairs in the middle. The food was really good, although the main course portions were a bit small. The Kaiserschmarrn at the end, however, was a huge portion and also very good. As for the service, the waiter in our section was friendly and regularly checked if everything was alright.

Traditional Munich restaurant, service, food, and atmosphere are very good. The only annoying thing is the first trip to the restroom – a turnstile blocks the way – you have to get a coin from the server beforehand 😉

I visited the Donisl again with friends after 25 years. It has completely transformed. From a tourist trap to a comfortably refined Munich-style inn. The greetings and farewells were personal and warm – something you usually only find in luxury hotels. Even the waitress (a vivacious and witty Chechen woman) was a perfect fit for us. A big thank you to the Donisl team!

The place exudes a typical Bavarian tourist vibe; you're immediately greeted by the owner, and the rest of the staff is dressed in themed attire. I had the cheese spätzle without onions and I loved it! I'd just reconsider the "small portion" (which I had) and "normal portion" (which my boyfriend, who usually finishes everything, had) because we were sad to leave some on our plate, even though they were delicious. I gave the service three stars because when you're seated at a table in the center of the room, it's a bit difficult to get the waiters' attention, and they force you to tip (not that we don't normally tip, but I'd reconsider their manners a bit, you know). A quick note to avoid going down the stairs empty-handed: to use the bathroom, you need to ask the staff for a token.

The Donisl is centrally located, 5 minutes from the S-Bahn and U-Bahn. The food was good; the staff had a rough start, but they were very attentive and friendly from the start. The atmosphere doesn't blow me away. It's very bright and open, which makes it a bit cozy.

A truly unique inn located right in the heart of Munich. Great atmosphere, attentive service, and an excellent menu focused on regional specialties, which were also very well executed in the kitchen. I enjoyed the fried chicken with potato and cucumber salad – absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. My only minor suggestion for improvement – ​​the breading on the chicken could have been a bit lighter/fluffier (but this is really nitpicking).

The food was good, the beer was also good, but with five beers it was always poured one or two centimeters below the fill line; despite complaining, it was not possible to fill the beer to the fill line.

We had made a reservation weeks in advance. When we arrived, we were relegated to the first floor. The atmosphere there was nothing like what you'd expect from a Donisl. Then (!) we were informed that they only had a limited menu... Great. Then we wanted to order more drinks to go with our beer: 1. they were out of those, 2. they hadn't been delivered yet, 3. no, we didn't have those. We paid for the beer and left. No further comment!

Good grief, such a run-down place, a traditional establishment! The owner should focus more on the quality of the food and the overall service instead of constantly seeking the attention of Z-list celebrities. Embarrassing. The food is really only okay for tourists, and the wait is unbearably long. There are better restaurants just around the corner.

It's not just about food and drink – here you get something for your soul and an uplifting atmosphere... and if you want to meet interesting people, then you should have a drink here – you'll experience something here!! Interesting people and interesting conversations – something you hardly ever find anymore!

Delicious food and great service made our evening visit a highlight. Our only complaint was the acoustics at our table (ground floor, center), which were a bit too noisy for our taste. Still, we'll definitely be back soon! 🍻

The pork Wiener Schnitzel... It had nothing to do with schnitzel, sorry. Greasy, tough, and the breading was soggy. I think it was frozen. Unfortunately. The portions were very small for the price. Never again.

WORST PORK KNUCKLE IN BAVARIA!!! I've been there a few times now... my impression is mixed. On the one hand, the Donisl's premises are impressive, and there's often live music. On the other hand, the staff is quite aloof. It's hard to create a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. The food isn't really good either. The white sausages and the snacks are alright, but the pork knuckle, for example, was the worst I've ever eaten. The meat was incredibly tough, and the crackling was very poor, practically rock hard. I immediately had the feeling it was already three days old. I really expected something different in a place like the Donisl with its history. Aside from the fact that my pork knuckle was forgotten and everyone had finished eating before I even started... It's starting to feel like a tourist trap 🤷‍♂️ Update September 24th: This might not be believable or funny for some, but for a good pork knuckle, I'd gladly go to Berlin and the "White Horse Inn" – the Donisl could learn a thing or two from them (best pork knuckle of my 41 years). The beer is very good! 2 stars for the beer and 1 for the location, or maybe the other way around!? 🤔

A culinary highlight at Donisl! I was at the Kulinarium yesterday – and what can I say: it was simply magnificent! Every course was a small work of art – a visual and culinary delight. From the wonderfully balanced appetizer to the perfectly cooked fish and the magnificent main course – everything was spot on, creative, and bursting with flavor. Add to that a perfectly paired wine selection and attentive, warm service. You can tell that the food and service here are done with passion. Donisl truly showed its best side that evening – a genuine culinary experience right in the heart of Munich! 🍷🍽️ I will definitely be back – highly recommended! 🙌

We went to Donisl last Saturday evening to use up our last Oktoberfest tokens. Fresh beer from the wooden keg, friendly and efficient service, great brass band music, and the food (tagliatelle with paprika chicken and schnitzel) was excellent and reasonably priced. Simply a perfect evening all around – thank you!

We went to Dinoisl twice during the week, ate different dishes, and were very satisfied. I'd especially like to highlight the roast ox; it was truly outstanding. A half-liter of beer for €4.90 and a liter for €9.80 is fantastic. I don't know of any other pub in town that's cheaper for beer. The service is professional, super friendly, and therefore first-class. The atmosphere is simply Bavarian, absolutely wonderful!

A dreadful experience. I do not recommend it. My husband and I went for lunch yesterday. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very kind and helpful young woman who didn't speak English, but she was very accommodating and polite. She gave me a menu in English, which I had requested immediately. She directed us to the first floor. I should clarify this because downstairs, the tables for two only had stools, not chairs with backs. As soon as we sat down and the waiter arrived, the disaster began. We were served by an arrogant, mocking, and rude waiter. It seems he hates tourists. He took our order, first asking what we wanted to drink. I ordered a beer for my husband and just regular water for myself. When I told him this, repeating it twice and asking politely, he laughed and said, as if mocking me, that there was no need to repeat it, that he understood. When I tell him I CAN'T DRINK MINERAL WATER FOR HEALTH REASONS, he laughs at me and leaves. He came back and brought us the beer and what he couldn't bring before, mineral water. :( I kept quiet so as not to start the meal off on the wrong foot, so my husband wouldn't notice and we'd have to leave. I wanted to enjoy this lunch and experience it as something nice upon arriving in Munich. Then I ordered a cheese appetizer, and for the main course, a ribeye steak with vegetables and fries, which I specified should be unsalted. After 20 minutes, he brought the main course with salted fries, and I said, "What happened to the appetizer? This has salt in it!" He rudely told me we had canceled the appetizer, which wasn't the case; I saw it loading into his machine. So I told him we didn't want it anymore, that we were already having the main course, and he just left us there anyway. All of this in a more and more aggressive manner. We finished, and I asked again for the English menu to order dessert. He told me there wasn't an English menu, that I should use the QR code on my phone, which wasn't working. I asked him again if there was any, that he'd taken it, and to please bring it to me. He brought it to me muttering things under his breath in German that he didn't have it. We ordered dessert, and he offered us coffee. I said yes, one, for after dessert. He brought us the coffee, and the dessert again 20 minutes later. A disaster. I asked for the bill, and he came running at me like a madman, saying, "HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PAY?" without showing me anything or telling me the amount. I told him to please bring me the bill, the receipt, and then I would decide how to pay. He yelled at me, saying, "Cash or card?" and wouldn't stop shouting. He told me there was no receipt, and that if I wanted one, I should check it on his machine. I checked on his machine, and he yelled at me again, "Cash or card?" Another customer got up and also started complaining about the same thing, that they had received terrible service. While my husband gave him the €100 in cash (the amount was (€87.20) He gives me my change, and I say I need the bill. He yells at me again, demanding a tip, and that's when I turn around and say, "A tip???? I need the bill," and I go straight downstairs to speak to the manager. Without realizing it, the people at the other table, who had also complained, come down with me for the same reason. Luckily for me, one of them spoke German and was able to explain what had happened better than I could. I got so nervous, I couldn't find the words. It was a disaster; I've never experienced anything like it. When the waiter saw me coming back with the manager, after we had already left the table, he left the bill on it. The manager told us there was nothing he could do, that he apologized for the situation, and that he could only offer us a free dessert… A stupid thing to do. A dessert doesn't make up for the mistreatment, the bad experience, the disrespect shown to tourists. I get just as nervous telling this story as when I was Oh, and I forgot to mention that I asked his name from the very beginning, just to call him by it, and I asked him again at the end. He never answered; he acted like he didn't understand me. The food was okay, but the mistreatment was so bad that, in my opinion, this place doesn't deserve any stars.

A bad experience, all because of the waiter, a rude and unprofessional man. We went to complain to the manager and found that there were several of us in the same situation. I'm referring to the waiter who works on the 1st floor.

Ignored for fifteen minutes then left. We were sat next to the person assigned to seat guests and the manager knew we were waiting, but they refused to take an order from us. What is the point? Their focus is not on guests.

Unfortunately, we can't comment on the food, as we left without ordering anything. We were shown to a table with the added note that it was reserved for us in two hours. Not a problem in itself. However, once we sat down, we were completely ignored for at least 15 minutes. Attempts to inform the staff that we hadn't ordered anything were also unsuccessful. It wasn't until we were leaving the restaurant that they seemed to realize we hadn't been served. What a shame! Especially when I read that other "customers" had the same experience two hours before us.

You constantly encounter new staff here, and unfortunately, the food has been consistently bad for several years. There were also complaints at the next table. We've finally moved our regular table. Better to go somewhere else.

The food was great as always. Lovely inn. Unfortunately, the service this time left something to be desired, considering the price. The pre-ordered cold cuts platter wasn't ready, and our waiter could work on his friendliness.

I enjoy being here. The duck was delicious. The service at this restaurant is quick and efficient. The waiter, Pawlo, was very helpful in helping my friends and me choose the right dishes and beers. Everything was excellent!

One star for the food — which was quite good — and one star for the nice environment and the other friendly staff. Unfortunately, our experience with one waiter completely ruined the meal. We only called him over after we had decided what to order. Even though he came rather slowly, our conversation took no more than three minutes — we just ordered three dishes and some drinks. When we changed the doneness of one meat dish right before ordering the next one, he rolled his eyes at us, very obviously. Later, when it was time to pay, he ignored our calls for a long time. Then, without asking or informing us, he added a 9% tip to the bill by himself. If we hadn’t asked for the receipt, we wouldn’t have noticed we had paid extra. It’s not about the amount — we always tip when service is good — but this time, the attitude and behavior really didn’t deserve it. It felt dishonest and disappointing. I honestly wonder whether this was just one waiter’s personal behavior, or if the restaurant allows this practice. For English-speaking visitors: if you happen to be served by the same waiter, be cautious when checking your bill. We’ve been to many other restaurants in Germany, even where staff didn’t speak much English, and never encountered such rudeness.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Stay as far away from this restaurant as possible. They don't like French people and seat you at tables that are barely 25 square centimeters. WARNING!!! If you're here for less than 3 days, absolutely do not go there!!! You won't be served on time!! The waiters are unpleasant. And the portions are huge! I couldn't even feed my 3-year-old. I know it sounds stingy, but for that price... A TRAP!!! And above all, A SHAME!!!

Service and food took a long time, even though the restaurant wasn't overly busy. The food arrived lukewarm.

We saw a mouse in the restaurant and were there for four hours. We spent most of that time waiting for our food. Even paying meant we had to wait another 30 minutes at the cashier because they didn't take our payment at the table. They gave us a free apple strudel because we had to wait so long. The custard was burnt, and the dish also took almost another hour to arrive.

We had dinner here and the servers were rude, demanding us to settle the bill while not all of us had their food and not having an overview with them (just shoving the pay terminal at us). When we finally got our receipts, after finishing the food, it probably was because they gave themselves a 17-18% tip. We asked if it was normal and didn't even get the question out before getting a rude "yes it is". We also found shards of glass in the beer of one of our party, they begrudgingly gave us a free beer to replace it (which wasn't even good beer to begin with). The food was average and decently priced, the place looks great. But the way we were treated made it an experience that I wanna forget and we should have just gone to McDonald's.

Beautiful restaurant with Bavarian flair, bright and light. The arrangement of the guest room is based on an Oktoberfest tent, decorated with hop cones. Pleasant atmosphere and if you're lucky, you'll get real Bavarian specialties and a freshly tapped beer with hearty tavern music, live from the landlord himself 🤩

We went there for dinner and were, unfortunately, very disappointed overall. My veal shank was okay, but a bit too salty. My companion's pork fillet, on the other hand, was bland and dry – rather average. The Kaiserschmarrn was the only thing that tasted really good. The service, however, was an absolute disaster. The waiter was unfriendly, completely overwhelmed, and practically ignored us. We had to call over every time to order or pay – even though it wasn't that busy. When we wanted to take the leftovers of the Kaiserschmarrn to go, he just rolled his eyes in annoyance. When we paid, he gave us a strange look because I didn't leave a tip – honestly, there's no tip for such poor service. It's a shame, the food might have been okay, but the lousy service made the whole experience simply unpleasant. I wouldn't recommend it.

Yesterday, we ate at Donisl for the first time in ages. I opted for the large roast pork...and unfortunately, they served me a fatty pork belly. I should have returned it. For €19.90, it's a disgrace. I'd rather go back to the Andechser around the corner...the quality is great there. Donisl relies on walk-in customers, and unfortunately, you can tell 🤷🏻‍♀️

The food was good, the music was too loud for conversation, and the service (male) was so unfriendly. We received a total bill but wanted to pay individually because everyone had different Oktoberfest tokens. He reacted really angrily...you can't put up with that. I won't be visiting this place again...there are countless others in Munich.

A truly disastrous experience from start to finish. I went to Dawnils with my family on September 19, 2025, and everything went wrong. The food was mediocre, but the service was even worse. The waiter was extremely slow and couldn’t handle two tables at once. We had to wait forever just to order drinks, and even longer to be served. The drinks were terrible — I ordered a Hugo Spritz for €9, and it was absolutely disgusting, clearly made by someone who didn’t know how to prepare it. We knew it was a tourist restaurant, so we weren’t expecting fine dining, but the worst part came at the end when it was time to pay. The bill was €139.70, and I chose to leave a €10 tip by card. The waiter, however, insisted that I should leave a higher percentage. I explained to him, in fluent English, that I preferred to give a fixed amount. He then rudely told me that “this isn’t France, and here you don’t decide how much tip you leave.” Because of his rude and arrogant attitude, I decided to leave no tip at all. He then became very unpleasant, making snide remarks in German that I couldn’t understand. In short: terrible service, bad drinks, and an extremely rude waiter. I do not recommend this restaurant at all.

We visited this Friday and spent a wonderful evening on the upper floor. A big thank you to our server, Maxim, the food was delicious and arrived promptly. I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to enjoy authentic, traditional Bavarian cuisine.

The waiter asked us to sit upstairs, as there were plenty of seats there. At the same time, we paid for our drinks (one for each of us). When he saw that the waiter wasn't tipping, he repeatedly said, "You don't tip, so you can't go upstairs." He did this with a pissed-off, serious expression. Extremely inappropriate.

We stopped by for a quick meal on Monday evening. The schnitzel with potato salad and fried chicken were good, but for the price, I would have expected a bit more refinement. The service was good, but we weren't greeted particularly warmly at reception; we were left wondering if there was even room for us.

We've been coming to Donisl since 2022. This year, Cornelius served us; we highly recommend Donisl and Cornelius. It was one of the best Munich evenings of our lives. Please come by.

Weekend in Munich... Reserved for two days in a row, as I remembered it from my childhood. The food on one day was quite okay; there was schnitzel, which was nothing special, but not bad either... The service on 10.10.25 (the one who took the drink order, and on that day also the one who took the check-in) was borderline! When my husband ordered a non-alcoholic beer, he said, "If it has to be!" ...uhhh, shouldn't the guest be allowed to decide for themselves? The food service here was quite okay! The second day (10/11/25) was an absolute disaster... We didn't even get to eat: the following situation: we arrived, the restaurant was 80% empty (around 4:30 p.m.), and we were shown to a table very close to the back exit. The waiter was gone in a flash, but two young men were there who had been smoking and left the door open. 1. Extreme draft. 2. Extreme smell of smoke - ugly. Why is there a law banning smoking in restaurants? After 15 minutes of ignorance, completely smoked, and half-frozen, we were just about to leave when a very rude young man approached us and demanded to know what we were getting. We said we could only stay if no one was smoking right next to us, or we would be moved (it was practically empty). That wasn't possible, the tables were all reserved (we did, of course), and the door was closed... No, it was open the whole time! We then said we had to leave, but there was no apology, no effort to find a solution for the guest, and not at peak times, but at 4:30 p.m. when nothing was going on. He turned around and walked away. And now the "solution team" doesn't need to write that they hope we'll come back—no, we'll definitely never come back—there's a much better pub on the street between the two well-known squares, with much more friendliness, and we ended up going there a second time that Saturday ;)

Visited Donesl for dinner during the last weekend of Octoberfest, the atmosphere was electric! They had live music based on Octoberfest theme, almost had Octoberfest tent vibes inside. The food was great too.

I was absolutely thrilled! The food was outstanding – fresh, lovingly prepared, and simply delicious. The service was attentive and friendly, and I felt completely at home. But the absolute highlight was the doorman – incredibly charming and truly handsome! 😍 That alone would be reason enough to visit here more often. A restaurant that impresses not only with its culinary offerings, but also with its visual appeal – highly recommended!

The waiter was very rude. He didn’t clear the trash left by the previous customer on the table for 15–20 minutes, and when I reminded him again, he threw the trash off the table with his hand and spoke in a rude, negative way. I definitely do not recommend this place

Incredible place, everything delicious. I loved the pork knuckle. Or as we say here in Mexico, "chamorro." The beer was delicious. We went with my family: my mom, my sister, my brother-in-law, and my great-nephew. I would go again!

Such a lovely, authentic restaurant. We immediately felt at home. Service was friendly. The food and drinks were delicious...and the price was reasonable for Munich.

Had a lovely drink untill we had to pay. The waitress who had been very friendly up to that point got very rude about demanding a tip. Not asking, demanding. When we refused she was very rude. Would not recommend.
