Charlot in Frankfurt am Main

I've often eaten at very good, even Michelin-starred restaurants, and I know the prices. This restaurant, however, takes the cake. The prices are abysmal and completely unreasonable. A place for nouveau riche influencers who want to show off their style on the terrace, even without eating. Such a poor overall rating can't be misleading.

The portions are small, completely overpriced, and tastes mediocre at best. This starts with the cover charge of just under €3 – which comes with a simple baguette and olives. My main course of salmon was ridiculously small, and the dessert that followed, "Chocolate Malheur," had nothing to offer other than a creative name for a banally presented chocolate souflé with vanilla ice cream and cherries. But of course, it cost €16.xx. Service is fine, the location is nice.

Please check your receipts! The card was charged more than agreed, and requests for a menu were ignored so the incorrect prices wouldn't be visible. A complete tourist rip-off; better to go a store or two further.

I've never experienced such a level of unfriendliness in a cafe. For the first time, unlike the ladies next to us, who had ordered drinks like us, we weren't offered a free side dish. On top of that, the waiter became very angry when he realized he'd made a mistake with the order and simply threw the card reader onto the table when we went to pay. I don't recommend this cafe due to the dubious, unfriendly, and highly disrespectful way they treat their guests.

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. The prices are completely exorbitant for the poor quality of the food. This is a complete rip-off for guests who want to eat before a concert. I will never eat there again.

We stopped here for a cold drink while walking around the plaza where the Alte Oper is. We sat outside under cover of a large umbrella and sat on some nicely padded lounge seating. My wife got a Limoncello and I got a Coke Zero. Her Limoncello was served with a fresh flower floating on top of it. Nice service here as well. Had we been hungry, we may have ordered lunch too.

Nice restaurant on Opernplatz. However, the service unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. We were in a large group and had to wait an hour for our starter. We weren't exactly thrilled and hoped that at least the main course would be quicker. It took 2 hours. So we had already been sitting there for 3 hours and had only just had the main course. In the end, there were things on our bill worth around €75 that we didn't even order.

It is a nice place and you have a wonderful view when you sit inside. The last time we visited the place the service was friendly yet the food needed to long and also everything was really slow. We had some stuff on the bill that didn’t even came. They really need better service ! Food is ok but it won’t be anything special at least not for me.

The Charlot was recommended to me by friends; it had been a work colleague's favorite restaurant. That's why I wanted to try it out when I visited Frankfurt a few days ago. And as a result, I was extremely disappointed, without meaning to be. Apparently this location seems to be the very best Italian restaurant in all of Frankfurt - and offers first-class food... But I didn't see any food on site. What I immediately noticed: Many people obviously run to this place because of its location right next to the Alte Oper. I understood this straight away. Due to the sunny weather, tons of tourists wanted to sit outside... But I didn't want that; It was just too hot outside for me that day and unpleasantly loud at all the outside tables. There are also no trees outside that could have provided any shade - so the place heated up extremely quickly. Parasols were folded up. At the bar, I asked at the counter right behind the front door where I could sit down in the restaurant - or whether there was free seating in the restaurant. No clear answer. Instead, the innkeeper is only concerned with himself and all his colleagues - and only says something briefly like 'Wait here; someone will come soon that you can ask!'. But no one came. Instead, right next to me, who was standing there waiting, there were waitresses rushing in and out chatting with the innkeeper; I stood there pure as decoration or air. And wondered how a single table that had been occupied in the interior had even gotten this honor of sitting there. At first glance, I was shocked at the price when I looked at a menu laid out right next to the counter - because it was really incredibly expensive. All the dishes seemed to be between 30 and 40 euros... Price wise, nothing for small budgets; Low-income earners have to stay outside. But I still wanted to try the food there - it was supposed to be so great! I waited right there next to the counter for a solid 10 minutes for a waitress. I just kept seeing waitresses running in and out - and talking to the landlord right next to me... Nobody cared that there was someone else in here who wanted food and advice. After these 10 minutes nothing had happened - and I was still being treated like air - I left very quickly, extremely frustrated... I had received nothing during my stay at the Charlot - neither to eat nor to drink; a friendly introduction to a table or answers to the simplest questions. Nothing. It may be an advantage at this location to reserve a seat in advance - I didn't do that... But I had read in other reviews here on Google that even people who had reserved seats didn't automatically get food. So they had to wait quite a long time for the food. I did not receive any food at this location. Instead, I only experienced completely overwhelmed waitresses - and a service that didn't treat me as a guest... Due to this extremely devastating experience, I will not visit this otherwise really beautiful place again in the future when I take a city trip to Frankfurt. So apologies for this really harsh criticism - but if you just leave me standing in the rain in the interior of a restaurant, you simply can't expect anything better from me as a potential guest. By the way, the interior was very nicely designed from a visual point of view... But due to the situation I was in, I wasn't able to enjoy it in peace and relaxation. I can't comment on the food because I didn't get any food or drink. That's why one star each for service and ambience - and none for food. What a shame!

We stopped by pure chance but it was a truly pleasant discovery. The super friendly staff welcomed a group of 9 people with a dog without a reservation. We were served by 2 very nice waiters, Donato di Dio, and the other from Pescara (I don't remember his name), we ate very well, excellent dishes. I recommend it, I hope to return as soon as the opportunity arises

I reserved the table and went to the restaurant by the time, the waiter said he cannot speak English and no any other staff let me in even I show the reservation email, they ignore and rude after all.

Mirko and Donato were wonderful, very professional and attentive. The food was delicious and Vegan just as we requested. The problem was the pricing of the food which was unfortunately very expensive for what it was. My baked sweet potato was around 27 euros, VERY expensive. If priced appropriately we would gladly give a 5 star rating.

The location is good, opposite the Alte Oper. However, I cannot confirm a good price-performance ratio. Pasta dishes without any special features cost between 30 and 40 euros. The tables are relatively close to each other.

Unfortunately, typical Frankfurt gastronomy: expensive food with average quality and extremely poor service. We reserved a table at 8:30 p.m. and showed up at 8:18 p.m. The table was free, but not yet prepared. This only happened 10 minutes after the ordered time. The highlight was that we had to wait more than an hour for the food. We didn't feel like having dessert anymore. Absolutely overpriced for the service, food rather uninteresting.

Experience: poor! 1. we ordered 2 prosecco: they forget! 20 minutes after order they served them finally 2. after second course we asked for the menu for desert. We had to asked again after 20 minutes!! 3. the food was good but nothing special! The prices were much to high! they were on the level of a two star Michelin restaurant but the quality was of a average bistro.

Charlot is a fantastic restaurant that impresses with its stylish atmosphere and first-class cuisine. The dishes are creative, excellently prepared and tasteful. The service was attentive and warm, which made the visit particularly pleasant. Our dog was also welcome, which made the stay even more relaxing. A place that you will definitely remember and visit again!

There are still pits in the olives and the music was only turned down a little when asked.

Wir waren am 30.11. mit 4 Personen zum Abendessen um 18.30 Uhr dort. Wir erhielten einen sehr beengten Sitzplatz nahe der Küche. Der Tisch war noch nicht eingedeckt, trotz vorheriger Reservierung. Es befanden sich auch noch Krümmel auf dem Tisch. Es herrschte ein sehr hektisches Treiben der Kellner. Die Qualität der Speisen war bestenfalls unteres Mittelmaß und extrem überteuert. Wir können von diesem Restaurant nur abraten. Für 3 Vorspeisen, 1 Hauptgericht (zähe Rinderroulade mit Rotkohl und Kartoffelbrei) und 3 Glas abgestandenen Champagner, 1 Fl. Mineralwasser und 1 kleines Bier haben wir 310,00 Euro bezahlt. Für uns eine absolute Unverschämtheit.

Ich lebe in F und bin dort mit meinem Besuch aus Belgien hingegangen. Eigentlich wollten wir schnell ein Wasser und Café trinken. Nach einer Wartezeit von 45 Minuten haben wir es aufgegeben und sind (trotz gezahlter Rechnung von ca. 27€) einfach gegangen. Service war das schlechteste das ich seit langem gesehen habe. Die Bedienung (überwiegend Männer) hatten absolut keine Freude an der Arbeit, das hat man ihrem Gesichtsausdruck und Umgang mit den Gästen bemerkt. Unfreundlich ohne Ende! Nie wieder!!!

Aufdringliche Bedienung ohne Distanz mit unübersichtlich vielen Kellnern und Kellnerinnen ohne minimalem persönlichen Kontakt, ohne Rücksicht aufs Wohlbefinden, wenn ständig die Tür offengelassen wird bei bereits deutlich kalten Außentemperaturen. Eingebildet überhöhte Preise für ein simples Ossobucco.

Ate linguine a la carbonara that was drowned in cream sauce and came with strips of boiled ham instead of bacon. The parmesan was piled up around the mound of pasta and had little flavor. I was then charged €30.90 for this. I will avoid this restaurant in the future.

No idea if it was personal, but the highlight is that the waiter cheated a €100 “tip” (for a total of €400) onto the bill! Guess that this is also an attempt to rip off business people and tourists...

Bad service, especially a waiter who seems out of place here. The bearded, middle-aged gentleman of Arab origin overshoots the mark. I don't expect the bland attempt with inappropriate humor to only recommend the most expensive dishes in order to get a higher tip in an upscale atmosphere. It's a shame because it's actually a good restaurant

I asked if it was ok to have a quick coffee. There were many empty tables. I was told "Yes, so long as you suck it up!" Fair enough. After a few minutes I went to pay my €6.90 bill by Visa. The waiter became aggressive because I had no cash. He then added €1.10 to my bill without asking, to cover his costs. I said he should ask me to do that, not add it without my permission. He then gave me €2 cash, then grabbed it back out of my hand and remade the payment correctly. All the time moaning about his costs. He didn't know I was actually going to give him the 5 euros I had in cash, for the inconvenience. He said next time, i need to bring more cash. But there won't be a next time. Unacceptable, unprofessional and rude behaviour. An uncomfortable experience. Avoid it.

At first I thought it was a hidden camera?! Rude waiter, waited 1 HOUR for food (store wasn't full) and then the chicken was missing from the Caesar salad and the waiter was annoyed when you asked him about it. In the end we wanted to pay by card and the waiter simply typed in a tip of €100 (€500 instead of €400), which we of course noticed and corrected. INCREDIBLE ! Only the food was tasty but never again.

A positive attitude, the end result is drama. The advantage is when you get inside. The interior look is very nice. The first minus is the service, or at least the waiter who served me and my partner came up to us, threw down the menu and left, which was often the case when I was looking at the garden. We ordered 3 dishes. When we finally got our food- pasta was relatively good but meat is a joke. The portion is small and poor quality. There is clearly a lack of leadership because instead of working, the employees stood there and talked. Not recommended.

Unzureichende Qualität Spontan entschied ich mich eine Pinsa als Snack zum Mittag. Was ich erhielt war ein labbriges Stück Teig zugedeckt mit fetten Mozzarella als Verzierung zwei Kirschtomaten. Der Preis betrug stolze 19,90 Euro. Auf meinen Hinweis dass ich mit der Qualität nicht zufrieden sei, erhielt ich von einem jungen Ober, der der deutschen Sprache nicht mächtig, mir zu verstehen gab, dass ich der einzige Gast mit einer Reklamation sein. Ich erhielt weder eine Entschuldigung noch ein Angebot für eine Wiedergutmachung Würde das Restaurant aufgrund dieser Erfahrung weder empfehlen aber auch selbst nicht noch einmal besuchen wollen. Zusammengefasst Überteuerte schlechte Qualität gepaart mit schlechtem Service.

I am a Spanish writer who lives in Iceland. We were on vacation in Frankfurt. I loved this super elegant Italian restaurant. Very authentic, great food and next to the opera. Clean and good service, although some Italian waiters don't speak English.

Seating is very nice, with a gorgeous view of the opera. Food was quite nice. The servers were really friendly. We had a really nice evening.

Meine Freundin und ich haben am Montag spontan im Charlotte Restaurant zu Mittag gegessen. Der junge Kellner, der uns empfing, war äußerst freundlich und zeigte besondere Aufmerksamkeit, indem er sogar Kaffeepulver entzündete, um die Wespen von unserem Tisch fernzuhalten. Nachdem er unsere Bestellung aufgenommen hatte, wurde uns von einem älteren Kellner Brot und Oliven serviert, die wir nicht bestellt hatten. Da wir derartige Speisen nicht besonders schätzen, gingen wir davon aus, dass diese eine nette Geste des Hauses seien. Leider wurden wir nicht darüber informiert, dass hierfür zusätzliche Kosten anfallen würden. Umso erstaunter war ich, als auf der Rechnung das Brot und die Oliven für zwei Personen berechnet wurden. Meines Erachtens entspricht dies nicht der angemessenen Behandlung von Gästen. Des Weiteren empfanden wir die Qualität der Speisen im Vergleich zu den gehobenen Preisen als unzureichend. Der Teig der Pinsa war etwas trocken, und die Tempura-Garnelen waren weder ansprechend präsentiert noch von der erwarteten Qualität; sie erinnerten eher an frittierte Mozzarella-Sticks. Bei einem Preis von 27 bis 28 Euro erwarte ich eine höhere Qualität. Obwohl die Atmosphäre im Restaurant angenehm ist und der junge Kellner sich durch seine Freundlichkeit auszeichnete, hinterließ der Besuch insgesamt ein Gefühl der Unzufriedenheit. Der junge Kellner bemühte sich, uns durch einen Espresso auf Kosten des Hauses entgegenzukommen. Trotzdem hinterließ die Erfahrung bei uns einen unzufriedenen Eindruck, was nicht der Anspruch eines Restaurants dieses Niveaus sein sollte. Auch eine Email habe ich dem Restaurant geschrieben und fünf Tage später bleibt die Email unbeantwortet.

My girlfriend and I spontaneously had lunch at the Charlotte Restaurant. The young waiter who welcomed us was extremely friendly and accommodating. He showed special attention by even lighting coffee powder on fire to keep the wasps away from our table. After taking our order, an older waiter served us bread and olives that we hadn't ordered. Since we don't particularly appreciate this kind of food, we assumed that it was a nice gesture from the house. Unfortunately we were not informed that there would be additional costs for this. I was all the more astonished when the bill showed the bread and olives for two people. In my opinion this does not correspond to the appropriate treatment of guests. We also found the quality of the food to be inadequate compared to the high prices. The pinsa batter was a bit dry and the tempura prawns were neither attractively presented nor of the expected quality; they were more reminiscent of fried mozzarella sticks. At a price of 27 to 28 euros, I expect higher quality. Although the atmosphere in the restaurant is pleasant and the young waiter was distinguished by his friendliness, the overall visit left a feeling of dissatisfaction. The young waiter tried to accommodate us by offering us an espresso on the house. Nevertheless, the experience left us feeling dissatisfied, which should not be the expectation of a restaurant of this level. We won't eat here again, but rather in one of the other restaurants on Opernplatz.

Good food, only the bread was anything but fresh. The friendliness of the service is okay. Very expensive for small portions, but that's probably due to the location. We had the truffle pasta and fish. Unfortunately the WiFi doesn't work.

We had reservation at 7:45pm & menu was given at after 30mins (I had to ask for it). I ordered for appetizer at 8:40pn & it arrived approx after 35 mins, we then ordered the mains knowing its taking time. Mains arrived around after 25mins (which is not bad). we wanted to order dessert but again, it’s so hard to get the attention of the waiters or they would say I’d be back and they never do until we decided to just end the dinner and leave. We left at 10:50. Yeah it took that looooong!!! Not kidding! No one checks if everything is ok, or ask if there’s anything else we need. Food is expensive so you’d think it will come with great service but it’s a disappointment. We came w/ 2 hungry kids by the way (12 and 5). I’m glad they were able to contain themselves and not throw a tantrum (at least for my little one). Would I Recommend this restaurant as a family friendly place? No. I would say it’s good for couples and friends that have PLENTY of time and have LOADS of patience.

Wir haben trotz Reservierung einen Tisch bekommen, der geschätzt 60x60 cm klein war. Bei Nachfrage hieß es: es gibt keine andere Möglichkeit. Andere Gäste hatten aber, auch zu zweit, zwei von diesen kleinen Tischen. Es war anstrengend keinen ausreichenden Platz zum Essen zu haben. Vor allem, wenn man sich wie wir, Zeit nimmt zum Essen und es genießen möchte. Natürlich kann man mit vielen kleinen Tischen mehr Umsatz insgesamt machen. Für ein Restaurant mit diesen Preisen, haben wir uns etwas anderes vorgestellt. Der Service war mäßig. Unaufmerksam. Teilweise unfreundlich. Alles musste nachgefragt werden: Öl, Balsamico, Salz und Pfeffer. War ja auch kaum Platz dafür auf dem kleinen Tisch. Die Wasserflasche mussten wir auf dem Boden abstellen. Die Spinat-Gnocci waren aus und sollten durch Kartoffeln ersetzt werden. Der Teller kam ohne Kartoffeln. Wir würden das Restaurant nicht weiterempfehlen. Und auch nicht noch einmal wiederkommen. Schade. Aber wahrscheinlich hat es das Restaurant nicht nötig.

Insgesamt ein wunderschöner Ort gegenüber der Alten Oper, ein schöner und stilvoller Restaurant. Das Essen ist ordentlich, aber nichts Besonderes. Die Preise sind wegen der Lage überhöht, jedoch nicht aufgrund der Qualität der Küche. Der Service ist am Samstagabend erwartungsgemäß langsamer als unter der Woche. Anstelle eines guten Proseccos wird einfacher Schaumwein serviert.

Unfortunately the ambience doesn't match the prices. For an upscale ambience, I would like more peace and space between the tables. The food is good, but the price increases in recent years are disproportionate. The service is good.

The food was very good, but there were hidden costs such as place settings for €2.60/person, and that seems like a tourist trap abroad. It's a shame that they really need that. Ordered and received beef fillet for just under €49. The sauce on the plate had to be paid for separately afterwards at six euros. This is also a no go in a reputable establishment. Basically, the evening was very nice, but it's just annoying and unfortunate when you have to discuss the bill afterwards and complain about it. After our criticism, this was taken out of the bill. But as I said: the beautiful evening was very clouded towards the end.

I was there alone at a time when the restaurant was full and they looked for a nice place for me and took great care of me. Of course everything is overpriced, but the location, the ambience and the friendliness of the waiters make up for it all. It was like my experience on the Champs Élysée in Paris. If you treat the waiters in a friendly manner, you will get the best feeling even in a tourist shop. 5* in all categories 👍 thank you for the wonderful experience

Located right next to the old opera, we were there for lunch. There were scallops and a Caesar salad. The food was very tasty, the service was very attentive and friendly. You know in advance that the prices there are high ;)

Went there after a stressful day, got amaaazing service, competent and playful servers and fantastic food. We got the cordon bleu and lobster on pasta, one of the best meals weve had. Tasty coffee, the servers again were so incredibly nice!

Wer ein schönes Ambiente sucht ist im Charlot gut aufgehoben. Wer gutes Essen möchte, sollte das Restaurant lieber meiden. Die Sauce Hollandaise zum Spargel war nicht selbst gemacht, sondern aus der Tüte. Trotzdem kostet die Portion Spargel ungefähr 26,90 Euro. Bestellt man ein Schnitzel oder eine kleine Portion Fisch dazu kommt man auf einen Betrag von über 50,- Euro für das Hauptgericht. Ein ´no go ´für die Qualität, die man geboten bekommt. Die Leber war hart und das Kartoffelpüree als Beilage war ebenfalls nicht selbstgemacht und zäh. Konnte man leider nicht essen. Dazu gab es noch Spinat, der auch lieblos und ohne Gewürze auf den Teller plaziert wurde. Wirklich ein überaus schlechtes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis. Schade, das man hier für die Lage soviel Geld zahlen muss und dafür so schlechtes Essen bekommt.

Bestes Restaurant am Opernplatz, schönster Platz in Frankfurt. Hervorzuheben ist der sehr gute und freundliche Service. Also ein MUSS IN Frankfurt!

The waitress was super rude. I am diabetic and had to give myself an insulin injection, so I asked if I could use the toilet there. The unsympathetic waitress refused, even after I said that I urgently needed the insulin.

Einmaliges Erlebnis mit einem so schlechten Service und daher leider das letzte Mal nach 5 Jahren, dass wir dort waren. Vielleicht Zeit für Rente des Kellners, aber in der Preisklasse absolut kein Service Standard!

Wir mussten sehr lange warten, und die Spargel Linguine Carbonara waren ertränkt in einer Sahnesauce. Der Service war sehr freundlich und bemüht, wenn er da war. Der Service erschien mir eher unkoordiniert, die Bestellung wurde nicht notiert, Die Folge war, dass die Aperitifs vergessen, gleich wohl aber berechnet wurden. Das Brot zum Gedeckpreis von 2,90 € war trocken, die Oliven eine Enttäuschung. Die Burrata war gut, die Portion für 26,90 € aber sehr überschaubar. 1 Stunde nach der Vorspeise kam das Hauptgericht, der Spargel mit Lachs für 44,90 €, das Kalbskotelett dito. Der Lachs war sehr schlecht, viele braune Stellen, lieblos angerichtet, es wurde auch noch Butter anstatt der bestellten Sauce Hollandaise gereicht. Ansonsten gut , aber wie bei allen Gerichten das Peis/Leistungsverhältnis sehr schlecht. Das Fleisch war gut, das Gemüse aber total verkocht, die Bratkartoffeln nicht knusprig wie beschrieben. Der Bezahlvorgang hat dann auch noch sehr lang gedauert, der Kellner hat sich meine Beschwerte angehört, aber keine Anstalten gemacht es wieder gutzumachen. Insgesamt eine Enttäuschung und ein verschwendeter Abend.

The place is very overpriced ! We were 3 and went there for dinner. At first we ordered a mixed plate to share as a starter and after we chose one fish platter from the menu and told him that we want to share it between 2 and when the check came, its price was approximately the triple than what it was on the menu and the waiter said yes because it is for two (knowing that we mentioned that we want one portion to share)!

Unquestionably fantastic Italian cuisine. The decor and atmosphere made a huge impression, and the staff was very nice and initiating conversation. A meal worth savoring. Every dish we tried was spot on! A paradise for the palate. Poetry dessert. A restaurant worth recommending. 5 stars from me!

If you don't leave a tip they get angry. The first day we went we left €5 euros as a tip (the food cost 100 euros per head) and the waitress made a bad face and didn't even greet us when we left. We returned the next day because we liked the food and when they brought us the bill they had charged us €19 as a tip without us having said anything. When we mentioned it to the waiters they replied that they had changed the charging system and that it was a tip that is automatically issued when You ask for the bill (the first time we heard this) we asked them to withdraw the tip and they got angry telling us that the customers who go to this restaurant never have problems paying tips and have the capacity to pay them. When we left they didn't even say goodbye. The food is good, but the treatment of the waiters is not pleasant, they are rude and conceited.

Echt italienische Küche, hier versteht der Koch noch was er macht 🙂. Extrem lecker und auch ein paar ausgefallene Speisen auf der Karte, wir waren jetzt öfter dort, Kompliment an die Küche und den Service. Der Inhaber begrüßt die Gäste persönlich und sehr herzlich.

Dinner was not as expected. Service was below average. Food was ok but nothing special. Not recommended.
