Cafe Barfuß in Marburg

Fantastic. Great casseroles and salads. Portions are generous and the prices are great. Service is fast, friendly, and professional. Drinks are full to the brim. Food arrives quickly and piping hot.

We stopped by for a spontaneous meal today with colleagues (7 people). I've known Café Barfuß for over 30 years. But today was the last time. Horrible! The service was nice, but very unfocused. First, my food was swapped, so I had to wait a bit for lasagna and could eat it later. The (cheap) salmon lasagna was really bad, though. Because of the swap, it was prepared so quickly that it was still cold in the middle. In my experience, you can't eat lasagna right away because it's very hot when you take it out of the oven. Then my second drink was swapped again, with sparkling water instead of still water. Then came apple strudel with ice cream. No spoons on the table... All in all, we won't be coming back. Poor!

When ordering our drinks, we said we needed a few seconds for our food. After more than half an hour of ignorance, we decided to leave. It's busy or I'm alone at my station, which I don't accept, since people who came after us already had their food. A huge disappointment! It was a total disgrace that a waiter kept grinning during the complaint. I have no idea how the good reviews came from.

We ate out. It's a busy street, where the 110 bus passes by. Good service and attention. Salads and gratins. Auflauf: 86 (pasta) and 93 (potatoes), very different but delicious. Good quality/price/quantity. Recommended.

Friendly service, short wait, but below-average food. Perhaps it's worth considering that, according to its name, this is a café and not a restaurant. Lured by the homemade tarte flambée on offer, we wanted to round off our vacation with dinner. We found a seat outside and ordered tarte flambée and veal schnitzel with fried potatoes. The food arrived quickly. The round tarte flambée was served on a wooden board and looked as if it could have used another minute in the oven. When we cut into it, we noticed that there was a round piece of non-stick cardboard between the board and the tarte flambée. It reminded us very much of convenience food. We also ordered Wiener schnitzel with fried potatoes. It came with a small bowl of salad. In short: the veal schnitzel was okay, the fried potatoes were only very lightly browned and soft. Perhaps this is typical regionally, but we've seen many variations. The salad bowl was dressed with corn, bell peppers, cucumber, arugula, and a bit of dressing and looked somewhat carelessly presented. The two Alster beers were well-mixed and had a high beer content. We gave the friendly waitress a generous glass of wine despite the rather poor food. I wouldn't recommend this place for dinner.

We ate at Café Barfuß today based on the good reviews. We were seated outside immediately. Unfortunately, after a long wait, the waiter only arrived after we informed the café that we would like to sit outside and order. Drinks arrived promptly, and the food arrived within a reasonable time. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the reviews. I had a fetizza with spinach and feta cheese. It tasted good, but the fetizza was unfortunately cold. The cheese had melted but had solidified again. If it had been cold, it would have been okay. It would have definitely tasted better warm. The salad was good. We also had a lasagna with spinach and salmon. This also tasted okay; the baked cheese was very tasty, but unfortunately, the salmon was very salty and the sauce was very fatty and looked a bit congealed. We had hoped for a bit more based on the reviews. It wasn't inedible, but it could have been better. The service was very friendly.

Great vegan breakfast with lots of fruit and vegetables and free coffee refills (which also include oat milk). We've been coming here for many years and have always been served with super friendly and courteous service, no matter how busy the staff was. You just sit a bit... cozy... with the other guests 😅

The service was very friendly, and the food was truly delicious. The only thing that was a bit annoying was that the pieces were so coarsely cut; we personally prefer peppers, cucumbers, and the like to be a bit smaller, but the taste was still very good. The wait went by quickly; we'll definitely be back.

Very friendly staff, our dog was offered water and a treat, so we all felt immediately welcome. :) Perhaps we came with too high expectations, as Café Barfuß is already an institution in Marburg. In any case, both the food and the general atmosphere weren't particularly spectacular. The prices have apparently increased quite a bit in recent months – almost €15 for a casserole isn't exactly cheap. On top of that, the casserole was pretty drowned in béchamel/cream, which gave the whole thing an unnecessary heaviness. We were full, though! The plates on the neighboring table also looked very well filled and attractively presented. If you stick to the daily specials, you can definitely get good food for a fair price, but for the standard dishes that are permanently on the menu, you'll find better restaurants in Marburg in terms of value for money.

NO! Not recommended. The worst restaurant we have visited in 2 years. Attractive from the outside. Quite noisy inside. The restaurant was well staffed. The service was nice, quick and friendly. BUT!!! The food!!! Is a disaster. My steak was actually inedible. I could hardly cut it with a knife, the fries were tasteless and on top were slimy onions with no bite at all. The salad was not crispy at all but extremely soft and limp. My wife had a tarte flambée. The same. No taste, not crispy, just terrible. We tipped anyway and said goodbye politely, but never again. No idea how these reviews come about. Bought???

We spontaneously stopped by for breakfast and felt very comfortable. The restaurant was quite busy, yet we received prompt and friendly service. The breakfast was lovingly prepared and delicious. Coffee and tea are included at no extra charge. If we're ever in the country again, we'd love to come back.

It has really good portions and taste is good but could be improved.

This place would be even better if advance reservations were actually accepted. Despite booking in advance (at the request of the restaurant due to the size of the group), we had to wait for 40 minutes (eight times the same thing); my mother's request for plain bread couldn't be fulfilled within three days. Upon request (!), they provided toast. Afterwards, we would have liked to have had more drinks... The stern Karl Marx above the door probably put a stop to unbridled capitalism.

Despite the restaurant being quite busy, six of us managed to get a table outside. Service took a while, but the servers were very friendly. Unfortunately, one of the six dishes was very late, and we would have liked to eat together. Nevertheless, the portions were generous, the food was freshly prepared, and the food was delicious! I was there twice, it couldn't have been more different. The first time everything was great, friendly service even though the store was full. The next day we went there for breakfast. The shop was still empty and the service seemed unfriendly. Ordered scrambled eggs with chives. "We don't have any chives." Unfriendly again. The egg I got was inedible, it was floating in fat and just didn't taste good. When asked, I said that. Then she got snippy: "No one has ever said that before!" Yes, I've never eaten such a greasy egg before! She offered to bring me a new one. But I refused because I had no hope of getting something better. In any case, I won't be entering the store again. And don't recommend it either. I once worked as a waiter myself, if you don't feel like doing that job, you shouldn't do it...

I tried Auflauf, a local Marburg dish, and it was unique! However, number 89 Karl Marx has too much spinach, but I used it separately with other ingredients, so number 79 Marburg is okay.

The restaurant was completely full when we visited (3 friends). We were then asked to sit outside at the table with a heat lamp. Our order was taken here, we got our drinks and as soon as a seat became available inside, we were asked if we would like to move inside. A great service! The food was consistently great and plentiful. Schnitzel, pasta, casserole - all recommended.

Nice cafe with large menu. We had lunch here and the portions were really huge. Food was also very tasty and when I couldn't finish my gnocchi I was offered a doggy bag. Service is friendly and fast. Dogs are also welcome and will be offered a biscuit and water.

There you can get the best (vegetarian) breakfast in Marburg at a very fair price. You also get as much free coffee and tea as you want. Absolute recommendation!

I really like the local atmosphere. If I had stayed in Marburg for a few days, I would have come often not to eat but to use cafes and bars. If German food was like this, I would eat it often. It feels like the bread was made with aged dough (it strangely tastes like Middle Eastern bread, but it's not so bad that you can't eat it!), topped with cheese, tomato sausage, etc., and briefly cooked in the oven again! So the tomatoes may feel a little cold. Number 92 has something like gnocchi inside and feels similar to Italian food. I ate my fill with two beers and two food, and it came to 35 euros.

One of the best restaurants in Marburg. The casseroles are super tasty. The coffee bags as wall coverings give the place its own charm.

Hey. We were with you yesterday. Unfortunately, the 6 of us weren't thrilled. Service seemed completely overwhelmed. The counter was full of old dishes. Drinks were forgotten. To the kitchen. Fries not cooked through. The cheese burned the nacho tips but didn't melt but like cold sprinkled cheese on top. The Champions with Gorgonzola was a total failure. Small chopped champions mixed in cream with Gorgonzola, briefly warmed up and ready. That was nothing. So the 6 of us were unfortunately very disappointed. Maybe you think about things like that. The tarte flambée was absolutely fine. Conclusion . We will try again next time we visit.

We were there for dinner this afternoon. We had the schnitzel with pumpkin foam, rösti and salad from the daily menu. For €14.90 Delicious. Only one salad wasn't dressed properly, as if some salad dressing was missing. But otherwise very good 😃. We also liked the ambience. Service friendly, courteous and quick. Gladly again at any time 👌

This is explicitly not a review of the food at Barefoot, but rather refers to a service employee and a very specific event. Early this evening there was a funeral procession for the massacre on October 7th. from the Oberstadtmarkt to the Garden of Remembrance. On his way, the participants carried candles, nothing else like flags or banners. It was a group of people mourning and remembering. This obviously bothered one of your employees so much that he asked, "What about the Palestinians?" and “Genocide!” had to call. I honestly wonder what his purpose was with this. Did he want to feel powerful for bullying grieving people? Does he really care about the Palestinians who are actually suffering? Or does he “just” have something against Jews? I don't know it. But it makes me sad that you can't mourn in peace in this country. How would your employee feel if, at a mourning rally for innocent Palestinians, people suddenly shouted loudly about Hamas's actual genocidal intentions? Or after the victims of October 7th. would be asked loudly on the Israeli side. That would be equally inappropriate. Palestinians and Jews alike have a right to mourn and remember. He trampled on that today. And before anyone gets the idea that this is a call for dismissal or cancellation. I don't want him to get fired or get talked at stupidly by the side. But maybe someone should have a serious conversation with him and ask why he thought that was a good idea, whether he still thinks so and whether he might want to apologize to the Marburg community. We all live here together in a country with a very dark history. We will never all agree. But maybe we should start talking to each other instead of yelling at each other or, in this case, at people who are silently grieving. Feel free to tell your employees this too, it can only improve our coexistence.

There are so many beautiful and interesting establishments in Marburg that it is very difficult to choose. Our hotel gave us a discount at 5 restaurants and cafes Barfus, one of them was. You didn't regret coming here at all. The food was very tasty, pleasant atmosphere, polite and friendly staff. The prices are also reasonable; dinner for two cost us 31 euros.

Today the five of us were out and about in the beautiful old town of Marburg and came across this quaint restaurant. We were thrilled by the large selection of casseroles and each of us ate a delicious casserole. The wait staff was incredibly responsive and friendly, big compliment! We can recommend the restaurant!

Discovery of the place to revisit during a future visit...

We went there for lunch for the first time today. All dishes were very tasty. However, the service could use some work on its friendliness. We all had a starter and explicitly mentioned it. There was also a completely stale Fanta, but it was exchanged without any problems. The entire meal was then served in one go, which was a logistical challenge because the table was far too small. When we asked why this was the case, we were blamed because we hadn't specifically mentioned that the main course was supposed to come later. Find the error😬

Located in the middle of the old town of Marburg, a rustic pub with a lot of charm. Unfortunately, the food disappointed me for the second time. This time it was the house salad. I always thought you couldn't go wrong with salad, but you can. Especially if you put hot onions and hot mushrooms on the salad so that it collapses In addition, instead of “fresh from the oven” baguette, a grain roll was served, which probably came from breakfast and had to go. Very tasty restaurant with a large selection of different dishes. There is tarte flambée, pasta, casseroles, soups, schnitzels, etc. There is also a lot for vegetarians. Staff is very friendly and the restaurant looks very nice. I had a tasty curry casserole. Conclusion: The next time I'm in Marburg, I'll eat here again.

The breakfast is very good and the staff is very attentive. We had the number 10 and coffee and tea included. For cappuccino or latte there is a surcharge of €2.50

We chose Barfuß specifically because its homepage stated that it was open until 1 a.m. and we had a lot to plan and discuss. We had ruled out a closer local alternative because this restaurant closes at 11 p.m. In fact, the last lap took place at 10:45 p.m. and we were asked to leave at 10:55 p.m. Luckily we hadn't made the decision about the last round yet, otherwise we would have had to drink our wine in 10 minutes. I think you should be honest, even with the published opening times. So you feel tricked because when planning the evening you trusted the information on your own homepage and there was no way we would have gone to Barefoot if you had honestly stated the actual opening time.

We waited over an hour to even order a drink and the place wasn't full.

The terrace was full, so I just took it out and ate it, and it was very delicious :D I had number 56, a baguette with chicken breast and tomatoes. The staff were friendly and I was able to pack the food comfortably! Note, you speak English very well.

We ate an excellent breakfast in this establishment in a rustic ambience, sweetened by melodious musical accompaniment. The Mundschänke's attention and her language friendliness delighted our hearts. A destination for morning table delights for noblemen and women.

The breakfast was really delicious. There is a nice selection of different breakfasts there or you can put it together yourself. The coffee and cappuccino were just as tasty, and they also have oat milk instead of regular milk. The service was friendly and nice.
