Good food at a very reasonable price, e.g., suckling pig with dumplings for €13.50. The beer we used ourselves was delicious! We'd be back!

We went to Gastof Mager. The food was mediocre to poor. I ordered a rolled roast of suckling pig. What arrived didn't look like a rolled roast at all; the meat was completely dry, black in places, and simply inedible. I complained loudly to the waitress, but she simply noted my comments and left without a word. I took the roast with me and gave it to our dog.

The food was delicious. And the beer was amazing. I just had to take a carrier home with me.

Once again, we were NOT disappointed! My shoulder of pork was buttery soft and easily removed from the bone, the crust was crispy, and the roast pork was also excellent! A definite recommendation for a visit to a rustic brewery restaurant.

I am 65 years old and a Schäuferla lover. I eat a Schäuferla at least once a month. Today I ate the worst Schäuferla of my life. The crust was tough and inedible. The bone was falling apart and the bone marrow mixed with the sauce and the meat. I had never experienced anything like it before. The sauce had probably been diluted several times and was very watery. The meat itself was soft but had a strange taste. My wife ate a Sauerbraten. The meat was very disintegrating and had been reheated several times. The sauce was also very thin. I complained politely to the server, but apparently no one in this restaurant cares. No apologies, nothing. We will never see this place again. Pure rip-off.

We really enjoyed the beer here, one of the best I like. Especially the dark beer. The food was delicious. The service was really fast and friendly. And the prices were really great.

Cozy, traditional brewery. We found the food very good, especially the baked trout and the Wiener Schnitzel. The Franconian potato salad was excellent. The staff is very friendly, very attentive, and really quick! Last but not least: The Mager Dunkel (Dark Beer) tastes very good. But that's a matter of taste, as we all know. Some people might prefer the Pilsner or the Helles.

The Mager Brewery and Restaurant in Pottenstein offers homemade beer from its own brewery and accompanying food. The dining room has a flair from the early 1990s, and the terrace invites you to eat outside, but it seems very unloved and even cluttered in the details. The service was friendly and super-fast, which really left a positive impression. The beer was generally tasty, too. I'd give it a C+ in school grades. However, the food was mediocre – the homemade potato salad was good, and the breading of the Wiener schnitzel was also well prepared. However, the meat in general, especially the Sauerbraten, seemed like it was the cheapest of the bunch. The Sauerbraten was extremely tough and almost impossible to cut. Apparently, this is a recurring problem, judging by other reviews. So, I can't recommend this place. We probably won't be coming here again. Which is a real shame, because Pottenstein now has one less restaurant to recommend.

...we were so looking forward to the Schäufele! What happened? The Schäufele had probably been sitting in the oven all day, was too salty, and just like the dumplings, which had also been reheated, it was inedible. The sauerkraut was okay. So, at Mager, you won't find fresh Franconian country cuisine like you used to, but only a reheated imitation of what you'd find in most tourist restaurants. I'm totally disappointed.

Simple and excellent Franconian cuisine with no frills. Generous portions at a fair price. And don't forget the home-brewed beer: absolutely top-notch and highly recommended.

No, just no. I'm not spoiled or demanding. I ordered baked trout with potato salad. There was also a fresh green salad. It looked delicious, so let's go. I was hungry. The green salad was very tasty, the dressing was also good. The potato salad was also OK. Now the trout was still half raw inside, so it went back and came back after about 5 minutes. I asked what that was about. The waiter said it was done now. To which I said that I wasn't going to eat such a torn trout. So I went back and then the cook came and wanted to tell me that it was a rainbow trout, which belongs to the Japanese restaurant. If I want to eat raw fish, then I'll go to the Japanese restaurant. The icing on the cake came with the bill. I was charged a proportionate amount of 8 euros for the food. What a disgrace. I said that I was happy to pay for the salad, but nothing more. So today I had a fitness day, just salad.

Although the restaurant is full and the waiters are busy, the drinks and food arrive promptly. Good, home-style cooking. The dark draft beer tastes very good.

Went there for dinner with four people after a hike. I had a carp fillet. My BEST thing I've ever eaten.

Everything was very tasty! Had schnitzel, Schäufele and carp fillet. Fair prices!

The beer was rather mediocre, the light one was slightly better than the pilsner! The liver dumpling soup was not that good and visually a horror! Dumplings had completely fallen apart and the noodles were already swollen, it just looked unappetizing, and there wasn't a napkin included either. At €3.90 the price isn't even justified! Too bad about the money

If you love Franconian cuisine, you've come to the right place 👍👍! In the rustic restaurant you eat like at grandma's. Excellent, down-to-earth and honest cuisine. The meat is tender and melts in your mouth, the crust is crispy, what more could you want! I was in Pottenstein on New Year's Day and had the roulade. I was quite full and it was incredibly delicious. The home-brewed beer was tasty, and the service was very friendly. We couldn't resist bringing some beer with us. We'd go back anytime.

We were here for lunch, Schäufle and Forelle Blau were both very good. And of course not forgetting the delicious beer at a great price. We should support such things, because if everything continues like this here, things like this might not be around for long. Like here in Thuringia now

Since I was alone and hungry, I stopped in spontaneously. The food arrived super quickly. The waiter was very nice and brought me my Spezi as requested, not from the refrigerator, which was a great way to drink it. The restrooms were very clean. I was full after half of it and asked them to pack it for me, which was no problem at all. I enjoyed the rest at home that evening. I'd be happy to come back next time. Excellent value for money.

We stopped in after hiking. The ambience is ok, the food selection was ok. However, the quality wasn't particularly good; I've eaten better in Franconia in the last few days. Salad is nothing special, bland and the main courses. Well, the bratwurst was fried on the outside and wobbly on the inside and a lot of fat. There was a dead fly in the sauerkraut. It was a shame because the beer was delicious, but the food wasn't recommended.

I hereby give 0 stars, unfriendly reception, according to the website it's open all day, but it doesn't say that the kitchen is only open from 5 p.m. Then we went back around 5 p.m. and ordered schnitzel. It was completely overgrown, you couldn't cut it. The fat was just dripping on the plate, it looked more like molded meat...absolutely bad...a schnapps was offered as compensation, but we politely declined. Of course it was then fully charged. No, thank you, never go to the restaurant again

We were in the Devil's Cave 2 days ago, wanted to go out for something to eat afterwards and then visited the restaurant. When we looked for a seat and the waiter came shortly afterwards, we were treated very rudely. Since we arrived 40 minutes before the kitchen closed (at 2:30 p.m.) we had to choose our drinks and dishes very quickly. We couldn't even open the menu, then the waiter came and told us to go faster. The waiter immediately got my friend on the kicker and said to him in a harsh tone: "I think you didn't understand me!?" My friend didn't put up with it and countered. We both come from the restaurant business and know how things work. Later, when the drinks came, another waiter simply threw the coasters down as if we were cattle. We didn't feel like we were in good hands in this restaurant after the event. What I am writing here is not an exaggeration, it is facts! I don't know if it was because the store was full or just us!? If so, don't let your mood out on your guests/customers. The food and ambience were okay. We wish you a nice day.

We ate there three evenings in a row during our stay in Pottenstein. We had roulade, sauerbraten and crusted roast. Everything tasted great to us. This was our first stay in Franconian Switzerland. This is exactly how we imagine an authentic Franconian brewery inn. We would love to come back at any time. Thanks also to the nice gentleman who served us so courteously every evening.

The inn brewery offers excellent beers. The food is good, but not outstanding. Simple food, a bit bland, little choice. It still tasted pretty good. Unfortunately, advance reservations are not possible, so we took a chance and just managed to get the last free table. This is no longer up to date.

I've eaten here repeatedly with three people at intervals. Very good Franconian cuisine at particularly reasonable prices. Drinks and food picked up and delivered quickly. Unfortunately, after many years of visiting, it has now become significantly devalued. Prices have risen disproportionately within just over two years. The schnitzel alone costs a few euros!! On summer days there are only three tables available directly opposite the bar. The rear, spacious guest room was simply made inaccessible using chairs. Instead of giving more guests access inside, they are forced into the uncomfortable and uncomfortable beer garden. Not everyone can tolerate the heat on summer days and portable cushions are completely missing on the heavy folding chairs. We'll have to consider coming here too often or at all in the future. Because the prices are no longer what they were for a long time - cheap.

The food looked like home cooking, but we didn't get around to it because when we tried to get to the third last free table, the waitress yelled at us: "Don't sit down! I can't make this table!" Any trained waiter would laugh now. We weren't welcome as guests and were greeted even more warmly at the trattoria a few meters away. I can't recommend the restaurant simply because of the very abrupt and unfriendly manner of the service.

Food was ok, the terrace, well, otherwise just unfriendly. After our children had played in the sandpit on the terrace for 45 minutes, they were shouted at who had allowed it and that they had no business there. No barrier, no sign. This is not how you behave towards guests. If you don't want that, you can say so normally or, better yet, hang up a sign.

Very unfriendly owners...service was nice though...our children were yelled at because they used the sandpit even though it wasn't really locked and there was no sign on it...you could have said it in a friendlier way...very child friendly!!!

Absolutely top... If you like good home-style cooking and don't want to go to the "fancy" restaurant, this is the place for you. But please be hungry, because the portions are “mega” in my opinion. Dogs are welcome. We'd love to come back... I can only recommend it...

Absolutely disappointing...we actually wanted to go to this restaurant for dinner...well unfortunately nothing came of it. Shortly after we arrived, the landlord took our drink order and delivered it after a short time. Full of expectations to order food, we were simply ignored. After more than half an hour, the landlord gave us a brief moment of attention and told us in annoyance: "There is no more food because at some point you have to draw a line." In my opinion, this was not done in the interests of the customers and the unprofessionalism can hardly be surpassed. Once and never again.

Into a bar, so late in the evening, we walked, still hungry, trotting. But the innkeeper, so cold and stubborn, just locked the door on us. “The kitchen is closed, friend! I’m not happy about your hunger.” No accommodation, no food, just a look, as cold as ice. Hospitality? Here's probably a joke, because the innkeeper remains in his seat. “Go home, eat at home!” There’s no rhyme here for you.” One star for this place? No thanks! Here we only experienced barriers. Just as we were banished, we will never be recognized here. But one thing, one has to admit in fairness, the home brewed beer was nice. A drop of gold in this horror, But unfortunately it's just a once-in-a-lifetime feast.

The bad rating refers to the inadequate website, which unfortunately did not make it possible for us to stop at the inn. As you can read on the website under “Our Kitchen”, the opening times are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. If you come in the afternoon and think you're going to get a meal, you're wrong. It just says succinctly that the kitchen doesn't open again until 5 p.m. In the age of the Internet, it shouldn't be a problem to make this clear on the site, if you already state the opening times, so that you can plan accordingly, don't go there for nothing and only be disappointed. In addition, you only find out at the entrance that no cards are accepted as a means of payment. This cannot be found anywhere on the website either. You then have to go back to the nearest EC machine and withdraw money, which, depending on the bank, may incur hefty fees. One would have expected more.

Absolutely bad. We were there about a year ago with 8 people. Nobody liked the food. Everything is tough as a dog and absolutely not recommended. If you are hiking here, hike a little further to the next restaurant

The beer tasted good, the food went well. The price was reasonable. The ambience of the restaurant from the day before yesterday didn't matter to us because we were sitting in the beer garden in the best weather.

Very good food and at a very moderate price! The boss is friendly and attentive! The portions are generous and there are at least 4 types of beer!

It smelled like delicious food as we walked past. The first impression came true. Terrace not ideally located, but pushed into the background by very courteous service. We were very satisfied and would like to come back again.

Update from the visit on May 25, 2024: NO card payment possible! The red beer is only available around German Beer Day (April 23rd) - but some bottles are still available - be sure to grab it! Not suitable for vegetarians! If you like meat, you'll get your money's worth here. The cauliflower patties with potato salad were bland and the trout, which was cooked in the deep fryer, was underwhelming. However, the beer is still very tasty and the meat dishes are also recommended. However, the dumplings were rather tasteless when we visited - that was not the case on the last visit in 2022. Review from April 17, 2022: There is currently a red beer - highly recommended. Cozy brewery restaurant with reasonable prices. Very friendly and attentive service and the food and drinks we ordered came fairly quickly, even though it was very busy. We felt very comfortable here with our dogs and will definitely come back again.

Had a very good meal for Ascension Day. Unfortunately there were few places available due to a lack of staff. But the landlord can't do anything about it. Unfortunately, there was a sense of hecticness and haste, which meant that the visit here wasn't as relaxed as the evening before, when there was a lot less going on. A quaint restaurant that will hopefully find people again soon. Otherwise everything was very nice

Super good Schäuferl and the same for roast venison. The atmosphere corresponds to a real, pleasant Franconian restaurant. When we come back to Pottenstein from Rawetz (Marktredwitz), our lunch will be here again in this top restaurant. Many greetings and hello The Rawetzers 😊

I have no understanding for the negative comments. We went there four times during a week's vacation because we enjoyed it so much and the prices were absolutely convincing! Roast pork is great, sauerbraten is great! Portions large. The staff was always friendly to us, and we especially had conversations with the house's daughter-in-law. Maybe it always depends a little on how you approach people. How to get into the forest......😉. And the fact that you can sit down at a huge table with a single person... why not? We also had nice conversations and met new people. We have absolutely nothing to complain about! On the contrary: €38 for dinner for three people - meat, dumplings, salad plates and drinks... where else can you find something like that?

Food was ok...The venison wasn't that well done in terms of taste. Service was nice but overall OK.

Tasty and good value for money.

We spontaneously came over with our dog and were given a very warm welcome. The beer is refreshing and the food is really tasty and generous portions. We were more than full and satisfied. If we're in the area again we'll definitely come back.

We spontaneously made a detour on the day of the Festival of Lights and despite the enormous (!) rush, we were served extremely friendly and quickly. The food was delicious and solid, as you would expect. Super organized! Thank you.

Ende Oktober.: Es schien so als wäre es eine der Gaststätten welche überhaupt noch geöffnet hat. Trotz allem hatten wir den Eindruck dass es ein gut geführter Familienbetrieb ist und alles gut läuft. Die Bedienung war gut gelaunt und gut zu Fuß. Empfehlungswert.

Während einer Wander haben wir hier eine kleine Pause eingelegt und on dieser urigen Gastwirtschaft ein gutes Bier getrunken. Sehr lecker und eben handgemachte! Unbedingt einmal probieren!

Klassische fränkische Küche und trotz übervollen Haus war der Hirschbraten umgehend am Tisch, was von guter Organisation zeugt. Bedienung auch nett, nasser Hund durfte trotz der Vollbelegung auch mit in die Gaststube.

Ein sehr schönes Restaurant! Kann ich bei einem Aufenthalt hier nur empfehlen. Preislich vollkommen in Ordnung und die Portionen sind genau richtig. Geschmacklich „wie bei Muddern“. 👍

Eine gemütliche Atmosphäre, ein leckeres Bier in verschiedenen Sorten. Das Essen ist war spitzenmäßig, bei allen Gerichten sehr üppige Portionen. Tradition kommt hier absolut zur Geltung. Papa am Tresen, Mama in der Küche , die Bedienung gehört natürlich auch zur Familie. Uns hat es sehr gut gefallen, wir kommen bestimmt wieder.

Rustikaler Gasthof mit einer bodenständigen, leckeren fränkischen Küche. Allein das Schäuferle war ein (fränkisches) Gedicht. Na und die in der eigenen Brauerei gebrauten Biere sind auch nicht zu verachten. Kurzum gesagt - die Betreiber und Mitarbeiter verstehen ihr Handwerk zu 100 %

Wir waren als grosse Gruppe dort und hatten das Essen vorbestellt. Ich hatte halbes Schnitzel mit Pommes und Salat. Schnitzel war okay, Panade war eher matschig als knusprig, dafür waren die Pommes zu lang frittiert worden. Salatsosse hat mir gut geschmeckt, es war ein gemischter Salat. Eine Bedienung war unfreundlich/pampig zu uns. Der Aussenbereich ist okay, aber mehr auch nicht. Wäre ich nochmals in der Nähe würde ich wo anders essen.

Haben angerufen um zu reservieren. Reservierungen werden nicht gemacht, man solle einfach so vorbei kommen, es wäre gerade eh nichts los. Mit Auto 10 Minuten später angekommen und wegen Überfüllung abgewiesen worden.

Das Essen war gut, Spanferkelbraten mit Klöße. Bier sehr lecker. Zu empfehlen.

Sehr gutes, einfaches Essen! Wir waren schon einmal vor 4 Jahren hier und haben uns nach dem Wandern wieder hier her "verirrt". Die Gaststätte war voll, mußten ca 25 min auf einen freien Tisch warten. Dafür hat das Essen aber entschädigt. Schnitzel und Schweinebraten sind auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen!

Ich finde ja man muss Gaststätten nach dem bewerten was sie sind. Ich finde die Brauerei total urig mit netten Gastgebern. Das selbst gebraute Dunkle ist hervorragend und das Essen ist einer Brauereiwirtschaft total angemessen. Fancy Gerichte wird man dort auf der Speisekarte eher nicht finden, aber Schnitzel mit Pommes und der gebackene Fisch sind ne sichere Bank.

Wir hatten Rouladen, die waren sehr lecker. Es ging sehr schnell und der Service war auch in Ordnung. Das Essen war gut bürgerllich . Immer wieder gerne 🤩

Uriger Biergarten mit leckeren Speisen, netten Wirtsleuten und vor allem dem leckeren selbstgebrauten Bier. Das alles zu fairen Preisen.

Wir haben hier 1 Woche Urlaub gemacht. Unterkunft war gut, Essen war gut. Beste Preise, freundliche Wirtsleute. Jederzeit wieder.
