Delicious Franconia food with an old charm. The schäufele I ordered was delicious.

The Backöfele was told to us that it's THE place to have tarte flambée - but we haven't had one... for 12 years. The waitress also doesn't seem to know what dry Riesling is... But: The food was really great, and the place itself was truly quaint and wonderful.

Quaint place, the menu has heavy Franconian fare, also salads and fish. Christmas spices are in the fish sauce. This time 2025, our reactions were mixed. The asparagus soup, the cordon Bleu, the Schnitzel and the tossed salad were excellent. The potato salad was just potatoes, no salt or anything else in it. Everything was fine as always.

Absolutely loved our dinner at Backöfele! The atmosphere is warm and rustic — candle-lit tables, traditional wooden interiors, and a cozy Franconian charm. We had the veal schnitzel with potato salad and cranberry sauce — perfectly crispy and full of flavor. The service was attentive and friendly, and the overall experience felt genuinely local and unpretentious. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an authentic Franconian dinner in Würzburg.

We were there with a group of 25 people on Saturday; our reservation was strictly from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The food was good BUT: when we wanted to pay at the end, we got a SHOCK. The staff demanded that we pay the bill in one payment; payment was NOT possible for individual couples in our group. The restaurant manager (or perhaps the manager) who came over justified this strange behavior with the incompetence of the POS software and the high level of effort involved. This was also done in a particularly condescending tone and with the comment that we had surely read the terms and conditions and the note in the reservation email. This is completely unacceptable; very customer-unfriendly. Not recommended for larger groups. We therefore cannot recommend it and will not go there again. T.K.

It's a very nice Franconian restaurant. It's rustically decorated yet cozy. When the restaurant is full, the noise level can be quite loud, but if you can overlook that, you can have a great time there. The portions are very generous.

Six of us ate there. The food was delicious and the service was friendly. But last night around 10 p.m. we wanted to go back. It was pretty empty, so we had no problem finding a table. When I asked if there was a table available for six people, I was told the kitchen was already closed. Since we only wanted a drink, I was told it was just a restaurant. We won't be going there again.

Very tasty food. Drinks and food were served quickly. The waiters were very attentive; highly recommended.

From the reservation to the food, everything was top-notch.

Such a great service. Really friendly and helpful. We (2 Persons) came on a busy day on a busy time without reservation and the staff told us that they will figure it out and had a bench where we could wait for a table to free up. As soon as we sat down on that bench we both got a free aperitif to ease the waitingtime. We didn't have to wait long for our table. The food is also great for a fair price and the atmosphere is just perfect. You have to check it out.

A wonderful restaurant, with a uniquely rustic ambiance, and the food is incredibly delicious. And, best of all, gluten-free options are also available. The chefs know their stuff.

Bus driver service...what's that? Yesterday I was at the restaurant with a bus group (45 adults). Before ordering, I asked the waitress, "Is the driver free and do you need anything else from me?" - "I'll ask and then let you know." We drivers actually experience this in every restaurant when we come with groups!!! I asked twice more, but didn't get an answer... fine. As the driver, I order one drink and a mid-priced meal, although the prices here are already set for tourists. When it came time to pay, I asked again and this time I got the answer, "No, we don't do that here!" When I asked the service manager, I got the same answer. Well, I paid for my meal at the cash register and then was asked, "Would you like a coffee now?" My answer was, "No, thank you!" In any case, I know where my company won't make reservations in the future!!! The one star is for the food, because it tasted good.

We stop here regularly when we're in Würzburg. The value for money is good. The portions are generously sized and of quite good quality. The service is attentive and very friendly. Food and drinks arrive promptly. If you want to dine here, be sure to make a reservation.

Excellent Franconian food in a great atmosphere. A must-try in Würzburg.

I wanted to try regional food and came to this restaurant on a friend's recommendation. I ate one soup and three main courses in two days. Everything was delicious and the portions were quite large. I'd gladly go back!

I really liked the restaurant. By candlelight and in pleasant company, we had delicious sauerbraten and smoked pork pancakes. Highly recommended. The service was also very friendly. Top-notch!

Our Main River bike tour started in Würzburg. Fortunately, we managed to get a table as a group in the evening at the very popular Backöfele restaurant. This Franconian restaurant with its traditional ambiance is definitely worth recommending, but it's also crowded and a bit noisy. You get the impression that they like it when a lot of guests are "dragged through" in a short space of time. The food and drinks were excellent and exactly what you'd expect. Why a Schäufele (shoulder of pork) costs €28 these days is anyone's guess. That's obviously a tourist price and not due to any special quality. Hence the one-star deduction.

The schnitzel's flavor was perfect. The brats and kraut nailed it. The spargle soup was just what May ordered. The atmosphere was most excellent!

Franconian cuisine, but so delicious! All seven of us loved it (Schäufele, Tafelspitz, Zwiebelbraten, Schnitzel...) and to finish, we had Kaiserschmarn (smothered pancakes) with a mountain of ice cream, cream, and fruit. Dark, rustic, half-timbered restaurant. Highly recommended and definitely make a reservation on the weekend!

The service from the staff was amazing! I ordered lentil stew and salad, and my husband ordered roast beef. Everything was delicious, even the dessert, and we were very satisfied. We visited around 6:30pm on a Saturday without a reservation, and were just able to get a seat on the terrace, but the restaurant was full, so I recommend making a reservation. The interior was also very nice.

We ate here on a Wednesday evening before a public holiday. Luckily, we had a reservation and got a small table in the hunting room. At first, I thought it was the so-called "cat table." But it was very cozy, and the room was quaint and quiet. The waiter who served us was super nice, attentive, and courteous. The food was fantastic! Every single course was indescribable. You have to try the Kaiserschmarren; it was the best I've ever eaten. Next time we're in Würzburg, we'll definitely come back. Everything is just perfect here: the price-performance ratio, the ambience, the food, and the service!

It's definitely worth a visit! The restaurant is quaint and cozy. The highlight: the courtyard in front of the building where the restaurant is located is used as a dining room. A really cool idea. The food is really delicious, and they also offer vegan options. I had a lentil and nut roast and loved it. I was also full! The service is quick, cheerful, and very friendly.

It's a bit unassuming from the outside, or rather not particularly appealing in the alleyway. But the interior is beautifully decorated, the service is very attentive and quick, and the food is delicious, with generous portions. I highly recommend it.

So, we've finally landed at Backöfele WÜ. We made a reservation, and it worked out wonderfully. We sat in the entrance area, which was very drafty and uncomfortable. You wouldn't believe how many idiots shorten their lives with tobacco and light. Then the drinks... we had some beer, and it was poorly poured! At least 1 cm below the gauge line without any foam!!! And that's not a coincidence; from our observations, that's standard there. The wine was okay. The food was a mixed bag. We had meat cakes—they were quite oversalted, and the plate was dressed up with too many fried potatoes. We also had a wedding dinner, so horseradish and boiled beef. This dish is truly a hit and highly recommended! Serve with a perfectly tempered Scheurebe... You don't need anything else, it's perfect! In any case, the place is buzzing, but I'd like it to be fair, please.

A very hospitable place. Behind the courtyard door lies a rustic and cozy atmosphere. We were served warmly and quickly, and the food was also very satisfying. The buttery, tender shoulder of pork is highly recommended!

Without any reason, 15 men were asked to leave the restaurant - probably because of our sexual inclination - without being able to pay the bill after consumption, and were thrown out very directly from the restaurant.

A tourist-oriented restaurant, reservations are recommended. We had a nice table for 16, the food was good, and the service was very friendly and attentive. After two hours, it was over, but that wasn't a problem thanks to the fast service and good organization.

Great, no ifs and buts. Friendly welcome and shown to the place, although not reserved. Onion Braised Roast: Tender, very tasty, I had the impression that the beef was somehow pre-treated. Marinade or fermented or... Blue Tips: Very good! Dishes very well tempered. Absolute recommendation because everything just fits. Second time here after two years and still as good.

Very cozy location, but the tables were extremely close to each other. All the dishes we ordered were very tasty and you could feel the high quality of the food. The service was impressively courteous and accommodated all special requests!

Unfortunately, the food during my visit was disappointing, somehow loveless. Sauce with skin, friend's soup lukewarm and somehow not that tasty. At least the service made sure that you weren't dissatisfied and a small dessert was provided, which was delicious.

We actually wanted to go to another restaurant that was fully booked, which is why we went to the Backöfele - that was ultimately a fortunate circumstance. Despite very good occupancy, we were given a table in the rustic, cozy restaurant and served excellent food (sauerbraten). The service was extremely friendly. The best restaurant of the year so far. If you're in Würzburg, be sure to stop by and don't be put off by the slightly higher prices. 5 stars.

After the city tour we visited the Backöfele. We were greeted warmly and served very well. The meal was excellent. Recommended!!

With luck, I was able to spontaneously get a place for two people in a full house and stayed there for several hours, completely thrilled. The food of the highest taste, the Cordon Bleu, absolutely convinced me. For dessert there was a delicious Kaiserschmarrn. The service was also a dream, we would love to come back!

Rustic atmosphere. Food (beef with horseradish sauce) couldn't live up to expectations with tough meat. Salad was good. Service unobtrusively experienced.

Beautiful, rustic restaurant with friendly service and great food in the middle of Würzburg. We arrived late around 9:30 a.m. and were greeted warmly and everything was great. Many thanks to the dedicated staff and the great atmosphere there

Was really craving some schnitzel and this ended up being our favorite schnitzel of the trip. We also tried the boiled franconian sausages which were very good. No open tables, but they seated us at a community table which was fine.

Typical Franconian restaurant, a few steps from the centre. Informal, pleasant, very warm atmosphere. We shared the escargot and smoked trout mousse (very good), before the main courses. Everything delicious, from the cordon bleu, to the pork chops, to the sausages. The quality of the products seemed very good to us. We concluded with the kaiserschmarrn, which is served with cream and vanilla ice cream. Excellent value for money. Fairly quick service. The best place we ate in Wurzburg. Highly recommended.

Great ambience, good service and very good quality of food.

The Kasslerpfänchen had no ribs, but the waitress didn't say a word about it. They probably took the Schupfnudeln off the menu. For €23 the expectation was high, but was grossly disappointed. Hardly any asparagus, about 6 pieces and the wild garlic cream didn't taste like wild garlic. The Schupfnudeln were out of the package. Big rip. I don't go there anymore, even if the atmosphere is nice.

Cozy atmosphere, delicious regional cuisine. Despite initially forgetting the starter, the behavior was professional by apologizing several times and offering to make amends. This is how top service works, which is unfortunately becoming increasingly rare. We would like to come back

The place is really nice inside like to back in the time for a moment, unfortunately we arrived in a busy time without reservation and the place was full we eat in a tables outside. Service was friendy and fast even the busy place. Food really German and taste.

The best location with very good food.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the food. The soup wasn't even lukewarm and had to be served again. The same thing happened with the main course. The dumplings are cold, the meat is cold and the sauce has already started to solidify. The only hot thing was the plate. We had to return the other dish for other reasons. Unfortunately, the food didn't seem fresh. They seem to focus on quantity rather than quality.

Apple and john juice spritzer watery, neither visually nor taste-satisfying. For 3 out of 4 people, the meat was extremely tough and difficult to cut. And the side salad was served without dressing, which the waitress wasn't particularly interested in. It was definitely the last time for us.

Franconian cuisine in a Franconian atmosphere. Even though it was inside, we had the feeling that we were dining with a view outside. Rich menu including vegetarian and vegan offers. Had the lentil and nut roast with dark sauce, red cabbage and dumplings: super tasty, I can really recommend it. Beer very good. Dessert too.

Very poor value for money. The food tastes extremely bland - whether soup, meat or fish. One would have really wished there had been salt and pepper at the table to at least give the whole thing a bit of flavor. This type of food would most likely be considered appropriate in a hospital.

We would like to thank you very much for three great evenings. We actually wanted to feast our way through Würzburg again, but somehow we kept coming back here. This is thanks in particular to the really great service, but also to the very good and down-to-earth food. The service was always courteous and friendly (even if it was always packed) and if you want to enjoy classic Franconian cuisine, you are definitely in good hands here. Thank you! We wanted to eat here on our last visit to Würzburg, but we couldn't get a seat. This time it finally worked. The restaurant is rightly very popular - the dishes are very varied and tasty, but traditional cuisine is still presented here. In addition to the Franconian Schäufele, we also highly recommend the caramelized Kaiserschmarrn with ice cream or the apple pancakes for dessert. The atmosphere is very cozy, even if it is of course a little louder because of the many people. Definitely try it out, but reserve in advance!

If you visit Würzburg, the Backöfele is a must. Rustic and cozy atmosphere, attentive and friendly service and the food was delicious.

One star deducted because the spinach with the fried potatoes was a bit too salty. Service was super nice. Even fulfilled my wish and brought me a hollondaise instead of mustard sauce. The ambience was too dark and too loud for me.

As part of a company event, we were guests at the oven in the evening. The atmosphere is cozy, rustic but not old-fashioned. A nice place to stay The service staff was super friendly, quick and always had a relaxed attitude on their lips. There are both regional menus and a special steak menu, which is part of the catering business but is operated as a different concept next door. Despite a large group, the food was there and tasted excellent. For me, the Bachefele is a clear recommendation and I will come back.

We stopped here after a short trip to Würzburg and received a very friendly welcome from the service. Thanks to the online reservation, we were able to sit in the beautiful courtyard in the sunshine. The atmosphere is inviting, even inside. Very good Franconian cuisine, tasty beers. Although the prices are almost borderline (over 28 euros for a Schäufele is already a house number). Given all the above-mentioned qualities, a visit to the Backöfele is highly recommended!

Super tasty food, wheat on tap, very attentive and prompt service. Just perfect! ❤️ Few public parking spaces right in front of the door. Something could be invested in the ambience or in the courtyard - clear walls of unnecessary installations, add some paint, purchase seating with padded backrests.
