Augustiner Zur Schranke in Nürnberg

For group reservations, a high minimum consumption is required, as well as the consumption of appetizer platters!

Had a nice time here catching up with friends. More of quiet part of Nuremberg city Center but it was still popular at meal times. There was only outdoor seating left for us during dinner time in winter but it’s fine as the good company of good friends made it warm enough. There’s many popular german dishes. Must try of course the Nuremberg sausages. They have one option for many styles of these sausages- grilled, boiled etc, good way to try. Of course wash everything down with delectable German beer. My fave is Weiss bier. A bit more pricey for touristy area as compared to maybe like your neighborhood pub but it’s not overly priced.

I've been to the Augustiner several times with guests and was always very satisfied – until last week: I wanted to make a reservation with a group of 25 people, which wasn't a big problem given the number of people. However, I was told that we would have to book a mandatory appetizer platter, with no idea what would be served. Upon inquiry, I found out that the price was €11.50 per person. For 25 people, that's simply €287.50 in entry, without knowing what you're getting for that. So: stay away from Augustiner if you have more than 10 guests! What a shame about the place.

A fantastic place, the food was fantastic and plentiful, and the service was excellent. Even though we didn't have a reservation, they made room for us. The girl who served us asked for directions to places to go out for drinks, and she even sat down with us and recommended several. Highly recommended. We'll definitely be back.

We had a wonderful meal at Augustiner Zur Schranke. The restaurant is beautifully situated near the city wall and exudes an authentic, cozy Bavarian atmosphere. The food was delicious – traditional dishes, well-prepared and rich in flavor, just as you would expect at an Augustiner. The portions were generous, and the beer was excellent. The service was friendly and attentive, which made the whole experience complete. A charming place where you can truly experience local cuisine and hospitality.

Visited on a busy day, around midday, had to hunt for a table (finally sharing one with an Italian family) ... but I cannot fault the service quality and speed. Okay, the latter might have been helped by us ordering standard fare (the Fränkische Bratwurst is recommended), more exotic dishes seemed to take a bit longer. Very tasty meal, mid-sized portion (just right, as Goldilocks might say), and priced in the medium range.

A very nice ambiance below the castle. The service was excellent, and everyone was super friendly. The shoulder of pork with sauerkraut was outstanding, and with a couple of cold Augustiner beer, we had a very pleasant stay.

There’s good Augustiner, what more could you want?!

After having such a positive experience in 2024, we stopped here twice during our 7-day Nuremberg vacation this year. 150 meters below the Imperial Castle, on the city wall with many historic buildings all around. The attentive and impeccable service (whom we already admired last year for his "Cologne Köbis style," but who seems to be a local and has reportedly been working here for 18 years) warmed our hearts. He gave us the tip that we didn't have to climb the city's cobblestones, but could simply take tram number 10 to the Tiergärtnertor. Indeed, the fairly flat path under the castle wall quickly leads to what is – in my opinion – the most beautiful square in Nuremberg. The fact that we played cards for hours before/after/and during our meal/drinks didn't bother anyone (as in many other Bavarian restaurants). The fried chicken with potato and cucumber salad is a must for us here; I enjoyed the cheese dumpling soup from the daily special. My girlfriend said she'd never eaten such good stuffed peppers with tomato rice. She had no use for the gravy that was served separately; instead, I was allowed to drink it straight from the gravy boat. On September 6th, an Argentinian duo played "Gassenhauer" (Angels by Robbi Williams and What's Up by 4 Non Blondes, among others) in the square in front of the Dürer-Hasen for the "artistic free 30 minutes." We stopped playing cards, and the "tourist listeners" were obviously also delighted by the musical interlude in this wonderful space. The steps to the restroom (the sign on the door quite rightly states "no entrance here," as it doesn't say "no stairs here") are still manageable for those with asthma or heart disease (because they are relatively even and not too many). According to my husband, men under 6'1" have to stand on tiptoe because of the high urinal. As a woman, I find it amusing, too.

We ordered food and only got drinks. We waited an hour. We asked, and they told us they'd forgotten to take our order. It took forever. The food was good, but the service was terrible. They didn't even bring us the check; they just gave us the price.

Been going there again and again and I bring all of my foreign friends there - traditional food and fantastic atmosphere, great view outside and the staff is very kind. 10/10

Good food. Good place. But we’re being ignored for the whole evening. Such a shame for this place. Problaby because we are foreigners.

We wanted to have a beer here. We spent half an hour there sitting waiting and the waiter never came to take and order. Terrible service.

Check your bill carefully! They tried to charge us for items we never ordered. When we asked for a refund, the waiter was very rude and aggressive, saying it was “over” and what do we want now. They only returned the money after we threatened to call the police. The food itself was ok, but we waited almost 20 minutes just to be served. Very unpleasant experience overall.

I can't say enough good things. Excellent dinner with the classic Wiener schnitzel and delicious potato salad. The place, with outdoor tables during this time of year, allowed us to dine al fresco under the castle walls in a truly beautiful corner of the city. The waiters were friendly and the service was very fast. Highly recommended. I would return.

Located in a beautiful square next to Nuremberg Castle is this restaurant where you can taste the best typical sausages in the area. And delicious beer. We come back every time we come!

Google said the restaurant closes at 11 p.m. We arrived at 10:10 p.m. to grab a quick drink, but they sent us out because they were closing. We drove all the way for nothing because Google said a different time (or were the employees just not in the mood to work?)

We stopped here for a bite after a long day of exploring Nuremberg. We had pork shoulder, spinach dumplings and sausages, Everything was excellent! Beautiful outdoor seating. The wait staff wear fun lederhosen. Five stars!

Good and fast service. Very nice beer, served properly. Food was rather average.

I bought a beer at this store and asked the clerk if I could walk nearby and return the glass later. He said it was fine, and I immediately paid with my credit card. Suddenly, a man ran out, accused me of not paying, and said I wasn't allowed to take the beer. He wouldn't listen to me. After clarifying the situation with the clerk, it became clear that he had accused me unjustly. Despite this, he refused to apologize and "hissed" at me to keep my voice down—even though he himself had previously made accusations against me in a very loud tone. He said I wasn't the first person to walk away with a beer. This is racial discrimination against Asians. Not wanting to apologize is unacceptable and very disappointing.

The Nuremberg bratwurst and potato salad were delicious, and the apple strudel with vanilla sauce was also delicious. You're welcome to take the menu, which is designed as a newsletter. The restaurant is right next to the Albrecht Dürer House.

Bei Gruppen über 10 Personen wird obligatorisch eine Vorspeisenplatte reserviert. Was diese beinhaltet und zu welchen Preis war vorher nicht zu eruieren. Und das, obwohl einen Mindestverzehr von 30,00 Euro pro Person verpflichtend ist. Da versteht einmal einer die Logik!

Bar man with the glasses in the lederhosen could learn some manners and be less rude.

Klasse freundliche Bedienung, Sehr gutes Essen. Wir waren auf Städtetour und sind dort eingekehrt. Das Bier war klasse, die Bedienung hatte uns gut beraten. Ein Aufenthalt der jeden Pfennig wert ist, wir werden beim nächsten Besuch ohne Frage Dörte wieder einkehren.

We stopped here after touring the castle. Prices are the same as everywhere in the city center. The Kaiserschmarrn and sausages were delicious, and the service was friendly. We sat outside in the warm weather. It wasn't comfortable, but it was nice.

DO NOT GO!!!!!!!! We arrived today, July 4th, at 9:30 PM and asked if we could have dinner, and they said yes. After serving the beers, at 9:50 PM, a very unfriendly waiter (look it up in the dictionary because other terms apply) came out and rudely told us the kitchen was closed. I definitely do not recommend going under any circumstances. If he doesn't like his job, it's not our fault.

Great restaurant in Nuremberg's most beautiful square! The food is consistently solid, and despite the location, it's not a tourist trap. The service was prompt and very friendly during our visit. You might want to make a reservation, as it's very popular with locals and tourists alike.

Authentic traditional German food. We had the Salad with Schnitzel, Sausage plate, watermelon salad and kids schnitzel, everything was so delicious!! Salads were very fresh.

Beer garden with a view of the Imperial Castle and the Albrecht Dürer House. Excellent Augustiner beers and food. Of course, they also serve Nuremberg beer 😀.

We were there quite late in the evening, just before closing time. I politely asked if they had another round for us – and the staff was very accommodating and friendly. Despite the late hour, we received warm service, which is definitely not to be taken for granted. The shop itself is really nice – quaint, cozy, and full of charm. You immediately feel at home. The atmosphere is typically Franconian and traditional and perfectly matches its location in the old town. Thank you for your hospitality – we'd love to come back, even a little earlier! 😉

The sausages are a feast 🤤 The people are super friendly, you can sit outside, and you don't have to wait long. You just have to watch out for the mugs 😅 Dessert (apple strudel) was also sensationally delicious 💥❤️

Enjoy a cold beer and some traditional Frankonian dishes in the shadow of the medieval fortress of Nürenberg. If you have a sweet tooth give the Kaiserschmarrn a taste. It is said that the holy Roman emperor (Kaiser) enjoyed it vastly as well.

I was there for vacation back in April and forgot to leave a review. Our waiters name was Christian and he was a great server. Very helpful and friendly!

We think it's completely wrong that from now on, there will no longer be Leberkäse (meatloaf) but instead "Leberkäse to Go." Who decided that? So today we had two Franconian sausages with potato salad instead. Everything was really good, except that the potato salad was sweet! Who likes that? Not us! We asked the waiter a few times... apparently nobody cares. If it's just walk-in customers, i.e. tourists who come once and never again, I can understand that. For locals, it's completely wrong.

With their bad service, they loose the customers. We were treated like “ just finish your food in a hour and leave “ Our starters and main dish was all brought at once and said “ aha sorry” That’s all! A drink, starter and maid dish had to finish within a hour! Although whole restaurant in first floor was empty, they were super bad in service! May be they think “ aha they are just a tourists, don’t come back again” Yes, if you have such bad service, no one will come again.

We wanted to drink a good Augustiner in Nuremberg and this restaurant was shown in the Google search. The beer tasted good. I can't say anything about food, we just had something to drink. The food that was served (to other guests) looked good. The terrace was in the shade and since it was windy that day we got cold after an hour.

Never been treated so rudely. We entered the restaurant and looked around for a free table. A waiter approaches us and whispers to us without even greeting us: "Do you need anything?" To my answer: "Do you have a table for six people?" he replies "But not today" and rushes off. That doesn't work at all. Never again.

Probably an institution in Nürnberg If you want great views of the castle and some of the best bratwurst sausages in the area. Just as good today as it was 30 years ago! Highly recommend.

A slice of bread with the bratwurst could actually be included in the price. The pastrami sandwich (daily special) would have been good with less mustard. ;-)

En øl blev til 2. Og herefter udviklede aftenen sig til en 3-retters middag med et 2 liters øl indtag for begge parter. Serveringspersonalet var helt fantastisk. De var gode og hurtige til at tage vores bestillinger og fylde vores ølglas op. Humøret og stemningen her er super autentisk og hyggelig. Jeg kan kun give mine varmeste anbefalinger.

1 soup was too salty, but all other dishes were very good! Mr. Müller served us particularly kindly and courteously. We Austrians felt very comfortable! Thanks!

Great dinner, in a really nice atmosphere. The service was really first-class, and the hospitality provided by Mr. Müller, who put in a lot of effort, deserves special mention. Everything to your complete satisfaction. Definitely recommended!

We had vespers in the early afternoon. Nuremberg bratwursts, bacon on the snack board and one Obatzder. The latter is listed as “Maximatorkäs” on the menu, but is also shown as Obatzder. No risk of confusion. I have the impression that it is freshly made there because it had a very intense note of Camembert. Exactly my taste! The portions were adequate in all cases and the price-performance ratio was good. I can therefore only recommend the food. Bavarian beer in Franconia...? Well, not actually, but it's in the name (so it's no surprise) and freshly tapped like this, there's nothing wrong with it. The good service is particularly noteworthy. While we sat there, four employees took turns looking after us, the coordination went hand in hand, everyone was very friendly and accurate and we got all our orders quickly - even though the restaurant was full. Card payment no problem. We really enjoyed our visit, which is why I would happily recommend this restaurant.

The two times I’ve been here the service was terrible. The last time we went here, the waiter served every table but us. It was so weird. They walked right by us over and over.. They clearly didn’t want to serve tourists, which is reprehensible. I’m not sure what it is about Augustine’s run restaurants because the one in the main tourist area of Munich has some of the worst food I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. Must be bad management from above.. There are so many better places to go in Nuremberg than this one.

We had lunch in this beautiful restaurant today for lunch, Schäufala, bratwurst and the cabbage were excellent. The extremely nice and courteous waiter knows how to deal with guests and can only recommend it...

There are such good Franconian beers that you don't really need an Augustiner beer in one of the most beautiful places in Nuremberg. But you can do that. drink. However, the economy is nice and service is not unfriendly. Weckla also has a good four to take away.

Resto plein de charme et decoré avec le style germanique ainsi que le serveur. Bon repas ainsi que le prix et bonne bières avec certains produits locaux. Service au début froid mais après souriant et agréable.

Nürnberger Bratwürste & Käsespätzle are a musst here. Definitely both the best we had in Nürnberg. Friendly waiters that also speak English and know how to joke with the guests even if the place is crowded. We enjoyed the time spent here & also had a delicious meal. Thank you!

Roast pork is highly recommended

We spontaneously ate 4 in the W outdoor area and were served very friendly. The 4 in the W were attractively served in a basket. We enjoyed it so much that we stopped again the next day.

The lady at the cashier was rude, the restaurant was empty and she was giving us a very small table that was just for one person. We tried to ask for another one but then she was rude... The restaurant was EMPTY. I dont recommend

AVERAGE If you book you have a table for an hour! So suffice to say that you have no interest in trying or eating a lot.... Chain restaurant... ultra touristy... ultra fast service, you're pushed... it's reminiscent of the school canteen that's too small... where the pawn forced you to stuff yourself to get out Quality of food and variety of menu very average or even disappointing.

Food is quite good, but just too expensive. Not even a salad decoration or already prepared. We are disappointed. 👎🏻

Regular care. They don't make any effort with foreigners. Don't order cordon bleu, it was terrible, it just tasted like smoke. We also ordered apple fritters and it had so much sugar that you couldn't notice the apple. They only had espresso coffee, there was no option for coffee with milk or infusions. I must not have been lucky when selecting the dishes. I don't recommend it.

Food was good, beer is of course good too, service was friendly, we were allowed to move around because at first we could only find space on uncomfortable bar stools with a high table.

From the daily menu we had roast venison and goose breast, as well as duck from the regular menu. Poultry could have been fried crispier. The roast venison consisted of 3 slices with spaetzle and creamed savoy cabbage. It was tasty, but it wasn't a taste revelation. Service friendly and quick. Ambience quaint and relatively comfortable. Augustiner Hell flows from the tap of a wooden barrel.

Had something to eat there yesterday with work colleagues at the end of the year. The waitress told us that an appetizer had been ordered for us when we made the reservation for 13 people and that we now had to take it too. We then had to pay for the meal for 13 people, even though there were only 9 of us. We paid around 110 euros for two appetizer plates that weren't particularly large and were served with manageable amounts of bread. Our colleague who had made a reservation there and had to cancel due to illness told us afterwards that he had not ordered the starter and the statement was that we only had to take the starter if there were 10 people or more. Nice approach to boost sales for locally based companies. Unfortunately, the service wasn't particularly friendly after we initially complained about the appetizer platters and the food was... well, let's say satisfactory. Only the freshly tapped beer kept the mood high. In any case, we will avoid eating here with colleagues in the future

I don't see all the fuzz about the place. I've had dinner there, food was OK, staff was sufficiently helpful, ambiance was OK. But nothing was too extraordinary. All was just as it should be. And prices are of course touristic, let me add.

Splendid local food and atmosphere - located at the top of the road where the castle is. Spaetzel, Cordon Bleu, and Pork Shoulder were all to die for. 5/5. We personally dislike any potato dumpling in general and unfortunately there was not option to swap it for something else. Serves decent beer too.

Typical German tavern, or at least it's how I imagine it: rustic, small and charming, mugs of beer coming and going. The waiters very friendly. The menu is quite simple, and almost all the options are some form of German sausage (grilled, boiled, roasted...) They also have 3 or 4 other dishes, meat and soup. We ordered the pork shoulder, which was delicious. It had a crispy pork rind type crust that was a 10. It was a large portion perfect for sharing. It came with potato salad, which was rather regulinchi, but it is typical of the area, because we saw it in several places and it was the same. Eating in these typical places is in general a very interesting cultural experience.

Bellissima vista sulla piazzetta sotto il castello, non molto spazio interno ma all'esterno. Ottima scelta di salsicce e ottimo strudel.

Great location in Nuremberg. Great Schäufele and a perfect Kaiserschmarrn. Great service.

We were there as a larger group (table was reserved). The menu is available in German and English and is not the most extensive. But there is something for everyone. Usually there are Franconian dishes and dishes there. The food was very tasty, portions (for men) just enough (if you were very hungry ;)). Augustiner beer is available in all types. The other guests were quite international, which wasn't a problem for the service staff. I also have to give them special praise - everyone was very nice and helpful. That was a positive thing :) Prices are not the cheapest but are appropriate for the location (right next to the castle!) and are affordable. Toilet is on the first floor! People with walking difficulties probably have a problem here. I would visit the Augsburger Schänke again if I was in Nuremberg (again)!

Zu 4 Erwachsenen und 2 Kindern mit gesundem Appetit haben wir sehr gut gegessen. Es war kein Problem, eine Beilage auszutauschen. Der Service war extrem aufmerksam und freundlich.

We came to have some wine and something to eat. We ordered a small salad and the vegetables were not washed. We found a lot of grains of sand in it, which is not okay and should be improved.
