Astra St. Pauli Brauerei in Hamburg

We had a disappointing experience at Astra St. Pauli Brauerei. It was my son's 16th birthday in the middle of a short trip to Hamburg. Lo and behold 16 is the age of consent when it comes to beer in Germany so we were looking for a place that had locally brewed (ie: authentic German) beer as well as a good menu so we could get him the requisite birthday dessert. We arrived a little after nine...it's a cavernous place with lots of places to sit inside and outside, and with no attention from anyone who worked there (with very few people in the restaurant) we found a couple of menus and a place to sit. The server came by and took away those menus and gave us a drinks-only menu as, apparently, they don't serve food after 9 (including desserts). Bummer to find this out as their website only listed their opening hours and didn't give any indication that we couldn't get anything we wanted if it was later in those hours. Okay, so we decided we'd have our beer and go somewhere else for dessert. I wanted to get the beer flight/sampler so my kid's first beer experience could be as rich as possible. They list a beer flight on their website menu, but for some reason, after 9pm, they no longer offer that. Okay, so no food, or dessert, and just beer...but what happened to the flight-sized glasses after 9pm? Are they hidden away with the food? Does the chef take them home? What reason can't they do a flight when they're only serving beer? Our server seemed especially annoyed that we were even in the restaurant at all. So in the end, although I enjoyed the 2 beers we got (Original 1909 Astra Urtyp [a basic ale]) and the "Night Shift" dark beer [nice and chocolatey] - we left feeling disappointed, unwelcome, and wishing we had chosen somewhere else to go have our son's first beer on his birthday.

Bad customer service. They really need to train the service people. Yesterday we were there and the waitress treated us badly - -Randomly saying we are ordering wrongly. -Not bringing any spoons or plates. -Asking randomly « have you booked the table ». -she was just showing faces on us. We gave a benefit of doubt that she might be having a bad day! It felt bit wierd and sorry for them that they are completely unhappy working there. If you are unhappy working there, get the hell out of there. We customers are not drinking or eating anything for free, we pay and we expect a normal decency in service. Very bad!

Good fun and a nice atmosphere.

Everything just fit. Very good food with large portions and very fast service. We'll be back......

Apart from the importance of Astra for HH, it's a really cool shop. Mega ambience and the service was also great. Unfortunately we were too late to test the food, but we will make up for it. Not a criticism, but perhaps important as information, the music is really loud and makes deep conversations difficult. We'll be back...

Unfortunately service is very condescending. The beer is okay but not special either. If that's the best Astra has to offer...

If you want to get really drunk then it's a great place. If you wanted to try one or two craft beers it isn't. The customers are very aggressive and it makes for not a good atmosphere. Because of this the staff seem unhappy. Had a weird vibe but for the location maybe that's to be expected.

Very tasty food and great service.

Eating is really not possible - schnitzel and steak were unfortunately both a disaster - tough and poor quality.

Sportsbar und Events, hier ist man richtig. Übersichtliche Essenskarte und überteuert, aber gut. Für grosse Gruppen mit Reservierung geeignet.

Ich war zur Brauereiführung. Super netter Führer. Leider stand ich im Stau, sodass ich den Anfang verpasst hatte. Der Führer hat mich extra angerufen und gefragt, ob ich noch komme. Ich hab gesagt, sie sollen gern schon anfangen, dass die anderen nicht warten müssen. Geplant war wohl eigentlich 60min, wir sind aber erst nach 90min fertig gewesen…Super empfehlenswert…ich mach das auf jeden Fall nochmal.

A visitor may or may not like the beer. But there are several varieties of Astra. The toilets were very clean.

The first time the service came...the second time it didn't, even though you were seen?! I can still recommend the baked potato - delicious!

Really brilliant place to drink a beer in bed. It was really a pleasure. Lived right next door in the hotel, so practical.

There were three of us in the Astra and it was good. Nice location, the beers were tasty, the staff was very nice and quick. The food was ok for us. Had fish and chips and currywurst special. Large portions, quality ok. In our opinion the prices are a bit too high.

We went to the Astra brewery as part of the Reeperbahn Festival. After a long wait, the completely overwhelmed staff served us IPA and pale ale, even though we were sitting right at the counter, which reduced the expression "art of brewing" to absurdity. Dear Astra - stay where you are. Original type in tuber or can.

Wir haben die Brauerei Besichtigung/Tasting und Abendessen gebucht. Steven hat uns locker und mit viel Witz durch den Abend geführt. Schade war, dass die Führung zweisprachig war. Es zog sich alles ganz schön in die Länge. Das Essen war köstlich 😋

Der Kunde ist hier leider kein König Wir haben die "Brauereiführung" mit 12 Leuten besucht. Als wir ankamen, hieß es, wir müssten noch etwas warten, aber könnten ja in der Zwischenzeit noch 2, 3 Bier trinken. Nachdem wir von verschiedenen Bedienungen zwischen Tresen und Tisch hin und her geschickt wurden, wurden wir dann letztlich an einem der runden Tische geduldet. Kurz nachdem wir unsere Bestellung aufgegeben hatten, begann dann plötzlich doch schon die Brauereiführung, unsere Bestellung war noch nicht da. Wir hatten "11 kleine Helle" bestellt. Bekommen haben wir dann 11 große Helle. Auf unsere Anmerkung, dass wir doch "kleine Helle" bestellt hätten, wurde uns von der Bedienung unmissverständlich klar gemacht, dass es ganz klar unser Fehler sei. Wir waren anscheinend zu doof zum Bestellen. Da das kleine Helle auf der Karte "Astra kleine Freiheit" heißt, hätten wir wohl "11 kleine kleine Helle" bestellen müssen. Ist ja einleuchtend, dass man sonst automatisch große bekommt. ;-) Also Achtung: "Kleine Helle" sind hier automatisch groß. Da fragt man sich doch, ob das ein absichtliches Abzocke-System ist... Wir haben dann die großen Biere bezahlt, wir waren ja zum Bier trinken da. Insgesamt muss man aber sagen: Missverständnis hin oder her, die Bedienung war uns gegenüber einfach dermaßen herablassend, dass man sich völlig unwillkommen fühlte. Der Kunde ist hier leider alles andere als König. Die "Brauerei-Führung" selbst war dann eher ein nettes Craft Beer Tasting in einem seperaten Raum. Die Brauerei war ein kleiner Raum in den wir uns dann zwischenzeitlich einmal alle reinquetschen durften. Der Guide war nett und sympathisch und hat sich alle Mühe gegeben, die Unannehmlichkeiten wieder gut zu machen, aber als er dann sagte, dass die "Astra Brauerei St. Pauli" rein garnichts mit Astra zutun hat, außer dass Sie sich die Namensrechte und die "Ausschanklizenz" für Astra gekauft hat, sie aber ansonsten einfach nur ein paar selbst gebraute Craftbiere unter dem Namen verkaufen, da hatte uns leider gänzlich verloren. Ein (wirklich) kleinen Snack, wie im Angebot erwähnt, gab es auch mit viel zu wenig Brot für die Anzahl der Leute (ein bekanntes Problem, wie man uns mitteilte - Änderungsgrund? offensichtlich nicht!) An sich kann man den Preis für ein kleines Craft Beer Tasting, was es ja nun war, vollkommen akzeptieren. Aber es als eine Astra Brauerei-Führung zu verkaufen ist wirklich nicht in Ordnung. Es ist ebenfalls nicht vorgesehen, dass man nach dem Tasting noch im Raum sitzen bleiben kann um in Ruhe ein oder weitere Biere zusammen zu trinken. Wir sind daher weitergezogen in eine andere Kneipe. Besser wars.

"Astra" brewery - where the friendliness is actually small Unfortunately, the customer is not king here We attended the “brewery tour” with 12 people. When we arrived we were told we would have to wait a bit, but we could have 2 or 3 beers in the meantime. After being sent back and forth between the counter and the table by various waitresses, we were finally tolerated at one of the round tables. Shortly after we placed our order, the brewery tour suddenly began; our order hadn't arrived yet. We had ordered “11 small helles”. We then got 11 large light ones. When we commented that we had ordered a "small light", the waitress made it clear to us that it was clearly our mistake. Apparently we were too stupid to order. Since the small Helle on the menu is called “Astra kleine Freiheit”, we would probably have had to order “11 kleine kleine Helle”. It's obvious that otherwise you'll automatically get big ones. ;-) So be careful: “Little Brights” are automatically big here. Makes you wonder if this is an intentional rip-off system... We then paid for the large beers, since we were there to drink beer. Overall, one has to say: Misunderstanding or not, the service was so condescending towards us that we felt completely unwelcome. Unfortunately, the customer is anything but king here. The “brewery tour” itself was more of a nice craft beer tasting in a separate room. The brewery was a small room into which we were all allowed to squeeze in at times. The guide was nice and personable and made every effort to make up for the inconvenience, but then he said that the "Astra Brewery St. Pauli" had absolutely nothing to do with Astra, except that they had the naming rights and that Because they bought a “dispensing license” for Astra, but otherwise they just sell a few home-brewed craft beers under the name, we were completely lost. There was also a (really) small snack, as mentioned in the offer, with far too little bread for the number of people (a known problem, as we were told - reason for change? obviously not!) In general, you can completely accept the price for a small craft beer tasting, which is what it was. But selling it as an Astra brewery tour is really not okay. It is also not intended that you can remain seated in the room after the tasting to drink one or more beers together in peace. So we moved on to another pub. It was better.

Gutes Essen, coole Location super nettes Personal. Wir waren an einem Dienstag dort, es war nicht besonders voll, deswegen war eine Unterhaltung sehr gut möglich.

Es war ein wirklich gelungener Abend. Anfangs schienen die Preise sehr hoch für das Essen, aber als die Portionen kamen, wussten wir warum. Und es war einfach mega lecker. Getränkepreise eher hochpreisig, aber dafür speziell und ein tolles Ambiente. Die Bedienungen immer super bemüht, freundlich und für ein Späßchen zu haben. Wir kommen wieder und Danke für die tolle Geburtstagsüberraschung mit den Probierbieren und der Fontäne. Ein tolles Team. Hut ab.

Mal eine andere Brauereiführung wie man Sie von großen Brauereien her kennt. Es war bis dato die kleinste Brauerei die ich besuchen konnte. Ein Besuch auf dem Kiez bei ASTRA lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, da man die dortigen Ausschank-Biere NICHT kommerziell in Supermarkt seiner Wahl bekoimt. Bierprobe war sehr interessant was man mit den gleichen Mitteln an unterschiedlichen Geschmäckern hinbekommt. Also egal ob alleine, in der Gruppe - or what else. und denkt beim trinken immer an den Zauberer "Merlin" der die Getränke braut. :-)

There were two of us there today, after a short wait the waiter came with his friendly manner and brought us the cards. In addition to the menu, we also took a look at the restaurant. It was an atmosphere that really suited the brewery and the Reeperbahn. When we ordered, we received competent advice about the beers, which we later tasted at the beer tasting. The beer came quickly and shortly after, so did the food. This was really good and special especially considering the cheap price. Really big portions and really, really tasty. Since we are still missing the (Franzbrötchen) tiramisu (our stomach was full), we will definitely come back. The restaurant is a clear recommendation.

Beer is nice. Practically empty when here so not fair to rate atmosphere, maybe it picks up. Food very average , and in the very brief time I'm spending in Germany I'm begining to think their cuisine is poor and not a reason to look forward to going there . Apart from steet vendors , all the food I've eaten has been a struggle and this place is no exception. First time in Germany and it feels like a sluggish place. Was expecting a bit more vibrancy . Notwithstanding this people are friendly and it's a beautiful place.

We were thrilled once again during yesterday's visit. This is exactly the right location to start an evening on the Reeperbahn. The service was very attentive and friendly, plus good food. At the beer tasting there are two types of beer that really take some getting used to, chocolate and caramel! Otherwise the beers are great and the food is really good. Be sure to use the photo box for a souvenir, great fun. There is also an Astra shop. A reservation (open table) is recommended.

Das Essen war sehr lecker (besonders die Currywurst) und wurde relativ zügig gebracht es war allerdings auch wenig Los. Besonders gefiel uns das Ambiente, auch wenn es etwas dunkel gehalten ist. Das Personal war sehr freundlich aber könnte etwas aufmerksamer sein. Ein Besuch kann ich dennoch empfehlen.

Great restaurant and delicious beer, what more do you need

Reservation is not a guarantee. Had reserved a table for 20 people. But there were no tables because of the festival. All I got was an annoyed reaction that the boss had forgotten to take it out. Apologizing is different.

Just like Hamburg, the Astra Brewery has an incomparable feeling of freedom and anarchy. Astra like Hamburg doesn't exist a second time. Historically honest and open to the world.

The visit was definitely worth it. The beer selection is really very good. I didn't know that Astra had so many varieties. The service is very good and really on point. And you can also eat very well.

The beer prices are overpriced, especially considering you're in the neighborhood. A tuber is cheaper compared to the prices on tap. The fries were unsalted and completely limp. I haven't eaten such bad fries in a long time.

An sich toll, wie immer. ABER es gibt eine neue Speisekarte und das Essen hat von der Qualität her doch leider sehr abgebaut.

cool location, if only the waitress didn’t take the menus out of our own hands and said (in german) “there’s no menu, if you want a drink go get yourself one”. we left straight away.

We went to Astra and had fun testing the different beers. We only had the tasting set. There were great beers - especially the Session IPA "Astra Inkasso IPA". The Keller Kale - an unfiltered Kellerbier - was our favorite. As a special there was a cider with hops "Apfel Adam" - we can also recommend the cider. Try it out - we thought it was great. The food was pretty good too, but there are certainly better options at this location. The location is great - right next to the S-Bahn. The prices are also slightly higher. You can definitely do it!

The food and drinks taste very good in the brewery. The staff is always friendly. You don't have to wait long for your food. The toilets are clean. Near the toilets there is a great photo booth and slot machines such as: “Pinball.”

Wir waren als Team mit 9 Personen unterwegs. Wir hatten reserviert, konnten uns aber auch einen anderen Tisch aussuchen. Die Bedienung war sehr nett und schnell, dass Essen gut und reichlich. Wir können die Brauerei nur weiterempfehlen!

Das Essen war ziemlich gut, Fisch & Chips - eine ordentliche Portion, Chips ganz lecker. Bier interessant vom Geschmack, leider nicht meine Geschmacksrichtung. Ambiente sehr einfach, die Tische könnten mehr Sauberkeit vertragen. Bedienung ganz Nett, aber auf das einfache Essen haben wir etwas länger gewartet, als wir erwarten haben. Geräuschpegel relativ hoch, aber auf dem Standort bestimmt nicht außergewöhnliche Lautstärke.

Unser Besuch der Astra Brauerei war einmalig, sehr gemütlich, viele interessante Details sind an den Wänden, Decken und Tresen zu entdecken. Der Service war klasse, auch als es voller wurde. Die Speisekarte war mit lustigen Begriffen der verschiedenen Gerichte versehen, auch die unterschiedlichen Astra-Sorten. Wir wussten gar nicht, dass es so weit am Ende der Reeperbahn noch so eine tolle Location gibt.

Super Location mit einer passenden Speisekarte zum Thema. Biertasting als Starterpaket echt nett, wenn man nicht sofort weiß, welches Bier einen den Rest des Abends begleiten soll.

Essen war super, Location super, Bedienung allerdings respektloses Verhalten gegenüber Kunden, hätten wir nicht im Anschluss eine Brauerei Besichtigung dort gehabt, hätten wir das Lokal direkt wieder verlassen.

Auf der Reeperbahn mit so einer großen Truppe einen Tisch zu bekommen, bei EM und Harley Tagen nicht selbstverständlich. Der Service, speziell alle Kellner-innen, waren gutgelaunt und klasse. Essen war gut und kam zügig. Dazu noch der 2:0 Sieg auf der Leinwand verfolgen zu können, rundete den für uns schon sehr schönen Tag ab. Wir hatten Freund knapp 22 std verloren und kurz vor Anpfiff kam Info das Polizei ihn gefunden hatte. 😍

Alles sehr empfehlenswert, Personal sehr freundlich und gut gelaunt. Essen war sehr lecker und eine tolle Brauerei als Highlight

Very very rude & unfriendly staff!!! You wait 20 minutes for the waiter to come, be cheeky, and ask: "Do you know?" You look briefly and he says: "So not"!!! 😡 goes away and you say: "you know", but he doesn't respond!!! Really outrageous! We got up and left!

Leckeres Bier, leckeres Essen, schnelle Bedienung. Alles super.

Very nice brewery with tasty beers. Huge selection of draught beer. The meat in the burger was very dry and there was a lack of staff, so sometimes an order was delayed. The TV football stream was lagged.

They didn't stick to the agreement, half of them were finished when the last ones got their food. In addition, several people had food poisoning afterwards, which meant that all other restaurants had to be excluded for a while. The price for currywurst and fries was far too high for the poor organization and quality of the food.

Currywurst was over salted and gave me a stomach ache. Service was polite but completely overwhelmed. We were offered an all-you-can-eat buffet, but this was a lie. I won't come again Best regards

Essen war super und das Service auch. Das Ambiente war außergewöhnlich. Wir waren beim Bingoabend dabei und leider war es so laut, dass man sich nicht mehr unterhalten konnte. Sonst ein schöner Abend:)

During our weekend vacation in Hamburg we visited the Astra twice. Both times the food was really delicious. Particularly noteworthy is the friendly staff. Although it was noticeable on Friday that they were a bit stressed due to the crowds, this did not affect the quality of the service. A small downside, however, was the condition of the toilets. Unfortunately, toilet paper was missing in all cabins and the cleanliness left something to be desired. Apart from that, the toilet area was attractively designed and fit well into the overall concept of the restaurant. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Astra and would visit it again at any time, despite minor deficiencies.

Food tastes and looks very good! Ambience successful! Cleanliness in the guest room was okay. Cleanliness of the toilets needs improvement.

Wir hatten eine tolle Besichtigung bei Astra mit unserem Brauereiführer Steven. Es gab verschiedene Biere und eine kleine Brotzeit.

Great atmosphere and really friendly service. The beer comes to the table quickly and fresh. A reference to the English menu was super helpful. Thanks for that. The food also came quickly and warm. The quality was fine. The bowl was missing chashews and the guacamole was just an avocado. In general, the salads were a bit blandly seasoned.

Sehr sympathische Mitarbeiter*innen, gut gelaunt trotz voller Kneipe und langer Wege. Wir waren total happy, so eine schöne Kneipe in der Nähe vom Hotel zu finden. Gläser gut gefüllt, Essen lecker und ausreichend, Bier hervorragend. Für uns passte alles - auch das schöne Astra T-Shirt 🫶

Cool atmosphere and delicious beer! But unfortunately the team could do a bit of work on the service. We had to wait a very long time until we were served. Same thing when it comes to paying. We reminded the waitress 4-5 times and had to run after the waitress after almost 30 minutes, otherwise she wouldn't have come back. But otherwise it's a cool place to drink a few beers :)

Tolles Ambiente, netter Service. Das Essen war leider nicht so gut, es war kalt, Fleisch auf dem Burger zu kompakt und damit trocken. Selbst die Pommes waren kalt. Dann lieber weniger Portionen fertig machen, die aber dafür gut & warm.

I can recommend the beer tasting here. 5 beers (0.1l) in different flavors. Service is OK, but could be significantly improved.

Waren ne halbe Stunde zu früh, Bude voll wegen der Meisterfeier des FCSP, sind sofort dran geglommen und haben einen Tisch bekommen. Mussten ein wenig warten aufs essen und die 2te Runde Bier aber wie gesagt, die Bude war halt Bomben voll. Gern wieder 🤎🤍❤️

40 min auf Getränke gewartet obwohl der Laden nicht voll war. Servicekräfte waren überfordert.

Nette, große Location mit toller Deko. Das Personal war freundlich und die Bedienung hat gut geklappt. Die Currywurst war gut, allerdings kein Schnäppchen. Das 1. Liga-Bier ist leider eine üble Abzocke, da wurden ganz normale Bierflaschen schlecht neu beklebt und dann für 5€ das Stück verkauft.

Service is not good. You have to order a “tuber”, otherwise you will automatically get 0.4 from the barrel without being asked. You cannot sit down without booking in advance (even though it is empty). Eating without a napkin. Doesn't do justice to the brand's image. Too bad 🥲

Nettes Personal und cooles Ambiente. Viele Biere vom Fass!

To all chefs Think carefully about whether you want to work here. 10-12 hour days are the norm, but overtime is not paid. Management is not interested in repairing the kitchen, but everything is done for service. The only plus point are the people in the kitchen and in service, apart from the "operations management". You are harassed at night and then have to work again for 10-12 hours the next day. Well, if you come from the Blockhouse! In addition, no agreements are kept. I was the 5th head chef in 3 years, and that should mean something! To answer How are you supposed to take care of operating times if there are no staff? And on weekends, when staff are there, there are so many reservations that you can't leave early! I was just banned from the house, the truth really hurts!

This Hamburg beer is a delight. The food was very good and the service was very attentive and there was hardly any waiting time.

We sat comfortably outside and had something to drink. Friendly welcome and very attentive service staff. We didn't eat and therefore didn't rate it. Even though it was full because of a football broadcast, the waitress had everything under control. We would come back and would be happy to recommend the Astra St. Pauli Brewery.

We went to the brewery twice. First at lunchtime and then in the evening. Every time we got a seat without any problems and were able to enjoy the tasty hops on offer. Among other things, we tried the Astra beer tasting, which consists of five different beer compositions from Astra. A delicious, interesting experience. We also had an Astra stimulator and an Astra Luden bearing. The brewery is located directly at one of the S-Bahn exits at the Reeperbahn stop. It's located at the end of the Reeperbahn, which means you can enjoy your hop cartridge in peace and without being disturbed. The toilets are clean and cleaned regularly. Brewery tours are also possible, but these must be booked in advance online and unfortunately cannot be taken spontaneously on site. The conditions were different, at lunchtime we were a bit inattentive, but in the evening we were very happy. There is also an Astra merchandise shop, but the prices were very expensive for our taste (a shame, because we would have liked to have a souvenir of this tasty experience). Addition (05/11/24): We went to the Astra Brewery again and it was once again a culinary delight. The current Astra of the season is Astra Adam, a beer that can be better described as cider and has a wonderful fruity note. Should definitely be tried. We also booked the brewery tour this time and we are very satisfied. The tour was informative, funny and there were also a variety of Astra beers to drink. Very cool and I can well imagine doing the tour again.
