A quaint restaurant/pub that you would find in the village, just in the middle of the city. Good German food, quick and friendly service. A special highlight is the carpaccio.

The restaurant is “cult”! You immediately feel like you're at home, the food tastes very good, just like your mother's. The staff is more than friendly and attentive. The best place to have a nice beer and a delicious meal.

First time in Aachen and we decided to have German food for dinner. I chose this restaurant since I have read many good reviews. We had such an amazing experience not only with the food, but also with the hospitality of the staff. We were seated pretty soon. We had Schnitzel with onion and mushrooms and the other with the hot sauce and both were delicious. Food portion is big and honestly one dish is more than enough for two people! Price was reasonable. Highly recommend it!

Classic German restaurant! Ever dish served here is a winner! We started with the Garilc Butter Snails and Schmalzbrot 😋 The schnitzel here is perfectly crunchy and the sauce on top is heavenly! The ribs were part of the specials menu for that day. The ribs were cooked to perfection and fell off the bone 😍 To finish we ordered 3 crème brûlée: STUNNING 🤩 The service staff were very friendly and made our visit very welcoming. I need to visit again 😋😋😋

The entrance reflects the tradition that the place wants to communicate, but then there is the noisy and slightly chaotic outdoor area. Good but nothing unforgettable. Discordant note from a very rude, tall regular customer at the counter who doesn't do justice to the style of the place.

Once again we stayed in the great Hirschgarten and enjoyed the family service with the best food and drinks! A clear 5 stars for this! Always happy to go there!

It was once again a successful evening. We'd love to come back.

We arrived at 7.40pm, kindly welcomed by the owner. We are immediately asked for drinks, we tell ourselves that it will be an excellent dinner... but instead! At 8.10pm the drinks and menus finally arrive. At 8.30pm we order. Carpaccio as a starter, arrives quickly but is nothing exceptional. The dishes (roast beef and a breaded pork steak) are served at 9.30pm!!! The wait is excruciating considering the half-empty place, the slow service and the old waiters who drink whitebait and beers behind the counter rather than bring you bread and apologize for the wait. Finally, the place smells like crazy cooking. We came out looking like McDonalds employees. Typical for sure but what shocking service. Better to look elsewhere!

Miserable communication opportunities! Reservations are possible like in the Stone Age. When the problem is pointed out, Mr. Ramrath becomes snarky: “Then just leave it alone.” Disgusting!!

Really slow service, waited more than 40 minutes for the first drinks, and more than an hour for the food. The food was very basic, and too salty. No further.

The bar was very high. It was my first time at the Knipp and because of the nice weather we were able to go to the beer garden, which is very large and pretty. The restaurant is super quaint and beautifully furnished, good middle-class and cozy, the service is very good. Now about the food. I like a good home-style meal and that's what the menu offered. Still, it was manageable, despite the five starters. The menu is very meat-heavy and the only side dishes were fried potatoes and mixed salad (with a very tasty dressing). The “vegetarian dish on request” was the celery schnitzel (with fried potatoes and mixed salad). The sauces for the dishes were presented very discreetly, and the mushrooms were just as manageable. What irritated me the most was the size of the plates. A mixture of a dessert plate and a flat plate, somehow too small. The portions of the steaks with a little sauce and fried potatoes seemed almost like a child's portion and seemed almost bizarre in front of the adult men, as well as smaller forks than usual. Strange. The size of the portions suggests that an appetizer is necessary to fill you up. For dessert we had the small crème brulée with an espresso and here the small is to be taken very literally ;-). The Zwickelbier was very tasty, but in my opinion it could have been a bit colder. In my opinion, the price/performance ratio is not quite in balance for the food. I wouldn't necessarily go there to eat anymore, as I personally felt that there was a little more variety on offer. It's definitely ideal for drinking beer and chatting.

Very atmospheric place. Delicious cold beer. The courtyard is beyond praise. We only ordered appetizers, it was bread with lard, a portion of 5 large pieces, delicious. The menu has a large selection of main dishes! This place is in the category: we will come back again and again ! 🫶🏻

Dear Ramrath family, after more than 20 years, I felt the need to spend a great evening with friends in your beautiful restaurant with the famous Hirschgarten. As someone who was born in Aachen and now lives on the beautiful Rhine, my friends received a warm welcome and excellent food and service. Delicious meal with extended family. We sat outside and it rained but it did ruin the experience at all!! Luckily we were under a large umbrella and only had to move a few tables and people to get covered. But also the manager I believe said we could move indoors if we wanted to. After dinner we continued having drinks and catching up and the staff were friendly and very helpful!!

atmospheric interior but snail service. We managed to drink the beer before we even got the card, so having to choose between dying or changing the place, we chose the latter. If it took over half an hour to receive the menu, I dread to think how long it would take to wait for the meal... :-(

One of the most unique and pleasant locations in Aachen. Even as a local a weekly to bi-weekly visit is a must. Thank you for the hospitality and probably best service in Aachen.

Reservation was quick and easy. On site we could choose whether sitting inside or outside was better. Class service; Fast, friendly, there when you need him, but not intrusive. The food was very good and large enough to fill you up.

There is nothing better in terms of ambience, friendliness and delicious food in this combination in the entire region. Went there with a dear friend from the Ruhr area who was just happy after that evening.

When you come in you are greeted nicely and immediately taken to a seat. You don't have to wait long for your food. The selection is small, but the food is sooooo good (especially the matjes) and the waiters are so nice. The decor reminds me of my great grandmother and I think that's so beautiful. The whole place stands out from the usual places with so many things. We'd love to come back!

Mit unserer Gruppe haben wir einen sehr schönen Abend hier verbracht. Gutes Essen, netter Service - was braucht man mehr! Am Nachbartisch eine Gruppe von der Führung bei der Printenbäckerei Klein wieder getroffen...lustig. Leider gibt es in den Sommermonaten keinen Öscher Sauerbraten, der soll hier am besten sein.

Wer in Aachen noch nicht "im Knipp" war, war nicht wirklich in Aachen! Eine wahre Institution und ein Familienbetrieb par excellence! Die Ramraths verstehen es, Ihren gepflegten Laden so zu führen, dass er der Tradion verpflichtet bleibt und gleichzeitg alles andere als altbacken daher kommt. Tolles gut bürgerliches Essen, das wahrscheinlich am besten gezapfte Bier der Stadt und eine typische Öcher Atmosphäre. So etwas findet man nur noch selten. Wer also gerne zu zweit zu einem romantischen Dinner in einem gediegenen Ambiente speisen möchte, für den gibt es in Aachen andere Läden. Wer aber ein richtig gutes Schnitzel oder Steak haben möchte, einem Gespräch mit mitbisher fremden Tischnachbarn nicht abgeneigt ist und auch ein bisschen Lautstärke vertragen kann, der wird sich hier pudelwohl fühlen. Und im Sommer lädt der Garten im Innenhof auch die ein, die es gerne etwas ruhiger und beschaulicher mögen.

Although we arrived at 5 o'clock, almost everything was reserved on Thursday. Yet they still managed to find us a place somewhere. We had a delicious meal here and the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was great and a beautiful place. If we are in Aachen again we will definitely come back

It feels like a tourist restaurant. The food is unexpectedly delicious. It is recommended to order rare for the steak. You will get it just right medium rare. The decoration is beautiful and the desserts are delicious. The only small drawback is that we were arranged with strangers. Tables (we have reserved seats in advance), this is the first time we have been forced to share tables while traveling in Europe. The restaurant business is very good, so be sure to book a table in advance.

Delicious food and really friendly staff!! Would definitely recommend the schnitzel with mushroom sauce! The beer was also great although I think I accidentally got the alcohol free one 😅 a bit expensive but worth it!!!

As has often been rumored: Great and cozy atmosphere with which the quality and, above all, the prices of the food cannot keep up! If things were different, you probably wouldn't get any seats in the restaurant at all! Still, it's a shame that no one is trying to change that!

When we arrived the place was absolutely packed, but space for 4 was found for us and we all enjoyed a fabulous meal washed down by excellent beer... fully recommend.

Sorry to say, but the food we had, Schnitzels were overpriced and soaked in sauce. I have eaten Schnitzels everywhere in the world and the ones I call the best were fresh, crispy and not 22€. I wouldn’t come back.

Delicious traditional Germanic cuisine!

Spontaner Kurztrip nach Aachen/Maastricht - eine kurzfristige Reservierung für einen Sonntagabend erwies sich als etwas schwierig, womöglich geht man zu Stoßzeiten einfach nicht ans Telefon, nach mehreren vergeblichen Versuchen am Vorabend hatte ich aber schließlich zu später Stunde Glück und ein freundlicher Herr nahm meine Reservierung gerne entgegen. Bei herrlichem Spätsommerwetter wurden wir im gut besuchten Gastgarten platziert. Fix kamen die Speisekarten und die Getränke, wenig später die Beilagensalate, die anscheinend schon vorbereitet waren bzw. lange zuvor mit einem ordentlichen Dressing angemacht wurden, die Salatblätter waren schon recht durchgeweicht. Auch unsere Speisen wurden nach relativ kurzer Wartezeit gebracht. Spareribs, lieblos auf einem viel zu kleinen Teller gestapelt, für den Liebsten und für mich den Zwiebelrahmrostbraten vom Roastbeef. Auch wenn Zwiebelrostbraten in der Regel ohne Rahm zubereitet wird, war ich doch überrascht, wie viel Sahne hier verwendet wurde. Sahne pur statt einer schönen klassischen Jus, die mit einem Hauch Rahm sicher noch akzeptabel gewesen wäre. Völlig indiskutabel die Bratkartoffeln, die ich eher als kleine frittierte und zudem sehr trockene Kartoffelstückchen bezeichnen würde. Richtig beschämend die Convenience-Röstzwiebeln, Herr Kühne oder wer auch immer lässt grüßen. Der Liebste hatte mit den gut gebräunten Spareribs die bessere Wahl getroffen, schön saftig und geschmacklich okay. Als Beilage gab es auch besagte „Bratkartoffeln“. Während des Essens erfolgte keine Nachfrage zur Zufriedenheit und auch eine weitere Getränkebestellung war nicht möglich. Selbst beim Abräumen der Teller bemerkte ein junger Herr erstaunlicherweise nur, dass „das“ ja sehr gut aussehen würde. Haben wir nicht wirklich verstanden, da wir nicht einmal aufgegessen hatten. Ist möglicherweise der Standardspruch. Nun, ich erwiderte zur großen Verwunderung des Herrn, dass „das“ gar nicht so gut war und erwähnte natürlich auch die aus meiner Sicht geschmacklich belanglose bzw. so gar nicht gelungene Sauce. Nein, nein, das wäre doch eine sehr schöne klassische Sahnesauce, die gerne zum Rostbraten serviert wird. Nun, da scheiden sich die Geister, für mich war da nichts wirklich schön oder gar klassisch, eher 08/15 Convenience und traditionell zum Rostbraten so gar nicht passend. Und dafür ruft man mittlerweile 31,50 € auf?! Ordentliche Tellerpräsentation scheint man hier nicht zu kennen, dazu passen aber wiederum die Salzmühle und die schon leicht in Mitleidenschaft gezogene Pfeffermühle aus dem Supermarkt, aus meiner Sicht sehr traurig für dieses Traditionshaus. Es gibt genügend stilvollere Wirtshäuser! Wenn ich mir im Nachhinein einmal die Fotos hier ansehe, so scheint man doch auf sehr gehaltvolle Saucen zu stehen. Musste gerade an einen Dialog aus der früheren Kochsendung Lafer! Lichter! Lecker! denken: Johann Lafer leicht vorwurfsvoll: „Sag mal Horst, wie viel Sahne nimmst du denn?“ Horst Lichter so: „Wieso? 4 Personen! 4 Liter!“ Muss man mögen! In der Summe sind es leider nur 2 Punkte!

A veteran in Aachen and always worth a visit. Incredibly friendly staff and very unique atmosphere. The portions are large and the quality is excellent. Everyone will find something here. The spare ribs, which are only available on Sundays, are simply unbeatably delicious.

The atmosphere is great. The food was great. The attentiveness of the service has room for improvement. If 5 people sit and wait in front of empty glasses several times, the air can get out.

A place with a lot of history. The food was okay but nothing special. The service was very quick, especially with the drinks. Only when paying, the receipt was simply thrown on the table by 6 people.

The ambience alone is worth the visit. It's unbelievable what has been collected here. Museum-ready. The service was very attentive and even if everything was full except for the last seat, you didn't have to wait long for your order. My mussels, Rhenish style, were exactly as they should be, delicious. Only the butter on the brown bread that was served was a little too well-intentioned for my liking. I can only recommend this traditional house

What a wonderful restaurant, you are a guest in gastronomic history. Family-run, excellent cuisine, perfectly tapped Pils or Kölsch, warmest team. For me the absolute number 1 in Aachen. You should book early enough for a table. I look forward to my next visit.

Not a single vegetarian main course on the menu

Es war wie immer unglaublich lecker. Der Service war freundlich und schnell, wir kommen gerne wieder!

Das Ambiente war OK - es wirkte warm und familiär! Das Essen war sonderbar - keine/r von uns hat es aufgegessen - irgendwie fettig und übergossen mit Soße, außerdem stimmte hier Preis/Leistung nicht. Für ein Kölsch ging ich dort rein, aber keinesfalls zum Essen!!! Der Service war echt nett, aber wenn das Essen nicht stimmt, dann tun die einem fast leid.
