The food was a disaster! You could tell it had been reheated. The chicken was swimming in a slimy sauce – and we paid €62 for two people! Never again.

We visited Wernigerode today and yesterday searched online for a quaint restaurant to eat at lunchtime. When we arrived today, there was a sign on the door saying that they weren't open until 5 pm. A note like that on the website would have been helpful. That's unacceptable.

The Kartoffelhaus Wernigerode deserves more than 5 stars. We were there on October 31st and November 1st, 2025, for Halloween and were pleasantly surprised. We had reserved tables from home, which was absolutely necessary. Despite the large number of guests, the service was incredibly friendly. Kudos to the kitchen; the "Dreckskarren" (a local specialty) was a fantastic idea and delicious. The food and atmosphere were top-notch. Despite the many tourists, we got a table without a reservation. We were absolutely delighted with the service from the staff. I agree with Henning H. 100%, as we had exactly the same experience that evening. The food was cold, the chef was yelling and extremely rude. When I asked why the "man in the kitchen" was shouting so much, I got the answer: "People are hard of hearing, and the food has to come out." What a shame 😞

I know the Kartoffelhaus from Munich and Berlin. It's always quaint, homey, and the food is delicious. Things are different in Wernigerode. You can hear the chef shouting so loudly you think knives are about to fly. After an hour of waiting, an unspeakable meal was served...cold, unloving, inedible, nothing like other Kartoffelhaus restaurants! Our youngest child got cold pasta in red-stained water. Even he, who never disdains pasta, just played with it. The rest was gnocchi soaked in buttered cheese, and I had cold green peppers with half-raw onions and cold strips of beef—the food smelled like...garbage! I tried it, but despite being very hungry, it was just disgusting. I'd rather cook something myself in my own kitchen...the service was excellent, though, the chefs just need to get some more training, or better yet, change careers altogether. October 26, 2025

Regular German food. The ambiance is really lovely. The walls and half-timbering are beautifully designed. Unfortunately, the food is poorly presented. It seems like it was thrown on and then sent out to the customer... The service, the Asians who bring the food and drinks, are really very friendly. The German staff definitely seem very overwhelmed. Other guests wanted to pay, and it took a while. They were already fully dressed, and then, after a while, the cashier took their money. It was all quite rushed. Oh, and the taste was lacking more than just a single spice. But the food isn't that important in a restaurant. What matters is the ambiance, and it's really great.

The food was OK. It tasted good, but the schnitzel was unfortunately a bit dry and very thin...the side salad was a bit of a joke, and the "wild mushrooms" were something but not mushrooms.

The Kartoffelhaus Wernigerode actually deserves more than 5 stars. Based on the excellent recommendations, we reserved a table well in advance, which was absolutely necessary, as it's difficult to get a seat spontaneously in Wernigerode. But our visit to the Kartoffelhaus was perfect all around. Excellent service, the food was beyond perfect, and the ambiance was truly lovely! If we come back to Wernigerode, we'd definitely come back :)

We were there yesterday without a reservation. We were invited in anyway, and they made sure we got a table for six. The service was excellent: friendly, courteous, and quick. They prepared a special dish for our little daughter. The price was also great; we paid around €120 for six people, each with at least two drinks. The portions were generous, and everyone enjoyed their meal! A definite recommendation, and we will be back. Thanks to the restaurant for the wonderful evening.

A difficult decision between the Spanish restaurant and the Kartoffelhaus, which are next to each other and belong together. Well, we chose the Kartoffelhaus. We were guided through the beautiful area at the entrance and found ourselves at the very back in a cold room behind a thick post. The waitress was listlessly bored with chewing gum in her mouth. I was looking forward to my knuckle of pork with boiled potatoes and sauerkraut. I wasn't expecting something so bad. The skin was wobbly like a knuckle of pork, the one and a half potatoes were overcooked and broken, the sauerkraut from the jar onto my plate, at least in terms of taste. Sorry guys, but you won't see us again. I've been thinking about whether to post this or not for a week. I'm just sad that we weren't even asked if everything was OK. Watch the video. So, go for it.

Highly recommended! We were there during peak time, so they only had tables available in the side room (but after a 30-minute search, we were happy to have found a restaurant at all). The main room of the restaurant is absolutely beautiful and quaint. Despite the full restaurant, the server was very attentive and friendly. The pork knuckle and schnitzel were excellent! Changing the order to red cabbage was no problem at all.

We had to wait a bit for a free table in the evening, but it didn't take long. There are several dishes for vegetarians and vegans, and they tasted great too! The service staff was also very friendly :)

We'd just ordered, and our drinks were already arriving at the table. (The drinks menu is on the large bottle at the table, which we hadn't seen....) 👍👍👍👍👍 We ordered food, the starter came quickly. We'd barely eaten when the main course arrived. It had a bit of an express train feel... 👍👍 The food itself was tasty, but it was somehow just slapped onto the plate. It didn't look appealing. 👍👍 For example, the lemon in the seasoned meat was inside the seasoned meat, surrounded by a much too thin "sauce" and a dollop of unbrowned cheese. There was only one spoon, no fork. The lemon would have had to be fished out. What if someone doesn't like lemon with it? 👍 The potato pancakes with salmon were good, but they tasted and looked like pre-made pancakes. Typical of a "potato house"... 👍👍 Fire meat spicy but unsightly 👍👍👍 Excellent service 👍👍👍👍👍 In conclusion, if you value fast food, this is the place for you. We were there on October 2nd. The reservation worked, and the drinks arrived quite quickly. Unfortunately, we then had to wait over an hour for our food. Since reservations are only valid for two hours, it was really tight. Furthermore, neither the quality nor the quantity of the food was impressive. Result: A tourist bar with careless, mass-produced service in a nice atmosphere. If you want good food, you should avoid it.

We had the potato house plate for two people. It was recommended as delicious on the menu. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The meat was overcooked and bland. The frozen vegetables were cold, and thank goodness we chose the fried potatoes instead of the frozen croquettes. We had reserved in advance and got a table by the window. Service was friendly, and the food arrived in just 10 minutes. We were finished and gone after about 45 minutes. We wouldn't be going back as a couple.

Under the name "Altwernigeröder Kartoffelhaus," you'd think everything potato-related would be prepared in-house. Unfortunately, my assumption was wrong. I had a schnitzel with champignon, croquettes, and salad. My companion had salmon with potato pancakes and salad with fries. Unfortunately, all the potato products were frozen. The schnitzel was very greasy, like it came from a deep fryer. All in all: 3 stars in service, 1 star in food, and the atmosphere was very pleasant (no stars).

I decided to stop by because of the positive reviews and the good allergen labeling on the menu. I was alone and easily got a table without a reservation. Thanks to the friendly staff member (I assume the manager) at the front desk, I actually stayed for 20 minutes until the first one finally came and took my order. My drink arrived very quickly, but the next table had to wait until after their starter. I chose the grilled vegetables with potatoes (which, by the way, is vegan and gluten-free), which was delicious. The tomato salad, in particular, was great! The portion could have been a bit larger. Unfortunately, I had to wait another 10 minutes until my plate was cleared and I could submit my payment. Then it took another 20 minutes and a second staff member (the manager again?) before I could pay. So, the service could still be improved, as the long wait actually made the evening a bit less enjoyable. Nevertheless, I recommend a visit. There are also other gluten-free dishes on the menu.

The starter and main course were quite dry and unpleasantly thrown onto the plate. The fries were rock hard. The staff were friendly but inattentive. The table wasn't cleared automatically, which was difficult for six people with multiple cups and glasses. After walking past several times, the dishes were only taken away upon request. The restroom was difficult to access from outside. All in all, not worth the money. A shame...

We sat outside in the nice weather on beer garden chairs, which had very comfortable cushions. The service was quick and very friendly. Unfortunately, the food didn't impress us. The smoked pork was very stringy, and the Duchess potatoes were frozen, which I think is unacceptable for a potato restaurant. The salad was delicious.

Is there a new chef or new rules? You guys are really good, but the farmer's platter with sausage and cheese for €21.50 was very discounted, and the potato pancakes with salmon were very tasty, but last November the presentation was a bit of a visual treat. Food served quickly - poorly prepared! The two of us spontaneously reserved a table at the "Altwernigeröder Kartoffelhaus" on July 18th, hoping not to be disappointed. We sat outside, so we can't comment on the ambiance. The restaurant was busy on a Friday evening, the service was friendly, the order was placed relatively quickly, and the drinks and food were on the table what felt like 10 minutes later...! I ordered venison goulash "Harz style" with red cabbage, cranberries, and dumplings. The fact that such a dish was served about 10 minutes after ordering naturally comes at a price. "Price" in the sense that the preparation of the dish was poor! I could, of course, be wrong, as I'm from Hesse and don't know what "Harz style" means. But I hardly think it can be called normal when the small amount of goulash, along with the mush of gravy, was barely seasoned and had only a hint of cranberries added, the red cabbage was completely overcooked and could only be identified by its color, along with the "dumplings," which turned out to be three warmed-up mini dumplings from a wholesale package...! In any case, this was the most miserable venison goulash with red cabbage, cranberries, and dumplings I've ever been served!!! I should have read older reviews beforehand, which wrote about many convenience foods and small portions at high prices! In retrospect, based on the photos on the review sites, I also realized that there is no consistency in the preparation and presentation of the dishes. Everyone in the kitchen, including the chef, seems to do what they want and how they want...!? We are used to and happy to wait a reasonable amount of time for a good meal and even pay a few euros extra. But "fobbing off" guests as quickly as possible with reheated ready meals so that the table can be quickly filled with new, affluent customers is completely wrong! My wife chose a fish dish, which was the right choice, since fish and baked potatoes cannot (and should not...) be reheated. By the way – my response to the waiter's brief inquiry about our satisfaction resulted in nothing but a completely stunned, uncomprehending expression...!? Our visit there was truly disappointing, and we cannot recommend this restaurant in good conscience – assuming, of course, that the guest values quality...!

The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was always friendly and immediately accommodated and fulfilled small special requests. What more could you want? It was very nice and pleasant. We made a reservation once and called at short notice the second day and still got a table for 5 people. We felt very comfortable and would love to come back.

We visited the beautiful city and wanted to end the long day with a good meal. We did some research on Google, and the reviews were so good that we decided on Kartoffelhaus. We received a very warm welcome, even though we didn't have a reservation and the place was very busy. The ambiance was very nice, and the overall impression gave us high expectations for the food. Unfortunately, everyone at the table was disappointed. I'm only speaking for my husband and me, though. We ordered the Kartoffelhaus platter for two people, the price rounded up to €50, and left hungry. The meat was tasty, but the highlight was the frozen vegetables, called "seasonal vegetables." That was truly outrageous and doesn't belong in any restaurant. Even there, they cut corners; there were maybe four tablespoons of frozen vegetables on this platter. The waiter noticed the dissatisfaction at the table and didn't even ask if everything was okay when we paid. We would definitely not visit the place again.

Anyone in Wernigerode should definitely eat here. It's a cozy place, but the food is very tasty and varied. Children up to 8 years old are free during school holidays with two paying adults. There's something for everyone. Reservations are recommended in the evening.
