Altes Gasthaus Leve in Münster

We were here as part of a city tour. An inn since 1607 with a lot of traditional flair and interior☺️ Our table was beautifully set and prepared with a welcome from the kitchen👍, our service was very friendly and prompt, and accommodating to our special requests 😎 The food was okay🙄 Soup and ice cream sundae were okay, fried potatoes weren't crispy, there was way too little sauce for my main course, the salad was also uninspiring, my companions' salmon was dry, and the lemon sauce was sweet (??) Maybe I was unlucky today... the place was buzzing, and many of the reviews say the food is good... I can't agree with that today 😏 Pinkus beer was very tasty, though🥹

We don't have much to say about the Gasthaus Leve; we've been warmly welcomed so often and eaten delicious food in a uniquely rustic atmosphere. We enjoy coming back again and again and have never been disappointed. Today's experience sums up the exceptional hospitality. When we tentatively asked for a change to the dish, the waitress beamed at us: "Special requests are always welcome." Where else can you find such hospitality!

Got to say the food was absolutely amazing, I had the pork knuckle and a few beers , definitely I would go back next time I’m visiting.

I had the classic pork schnitzel with fries. As I cut into the schnitzel, fat immediately sprayed through the air. Luckily, it wasn't in my direction, and it only sprayed once. The schnitzel tasted average. The fries were okay—not outstanding.

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of dining at the restaurant with my partner for the second time. My beef roulade was really good, and the red cabbage was also very tasty. I ordered a potato dumpling instead, which I was also very happy with. My partner had the schnitzel with hunter's sauce, which she was also very happy with. We had the cracklings with lard beforehand, and they kindly served us more bread... very thoughtful. :-) The value for money, ambiance, and service were really good. This restaurant was recommended to me by locals from Münster before my first visit, and it truly lives up to the recommendation... we'll be back. :-)

Very traditional German restaurant. The food is delicious and the staff is super nice! We went without reservation on a Friday evening and there were no tables available but the gentleman at the door put us on the waiting list and we got to enjoy our beers at the bar while waiting for our table. The decoration is like a museum. It's very authentic. They brought us an English menu after we have been seated which is nice. We went for the house specialties and we didn't regret! Everything was so delicious and they also have a variety of beers and other drinks. The prices are also very good considering the quality of the food. Highly recommended when you're in Münster.

The pork knuckle was incredibly good! Super tender meat and an extra crispy crust. Accompanied by an Augustiner Helles on tap! The food was beautifully prepared, and the service was very friendly and accommodating. I definitely recommend it!

Visited in 2023 and have been craving the large pork schnitzel with mushroom sauce ever since. Had to come back in 2025 again. Mushrooms were perfectly seasoned and seared, schnitzel was juicy and tender. Comes with salad and yogurt dressing which was amazing, complementing the saltiness of the meat. French fries were large

The ambiance was good. It was still really rustic, and there was plenty of space. Unfortunately, there are two different menus, and you have to pay attention to the time. We had a schnitzel with hunter's sauce and paprika sauce and weren't that impressed with the food. The schnitzel tasted OK and was a good size. But the sauce didn't have much flavor. And it was a bit light on the side. I think the price of €22 is excessive. We also got a bit of a rude response from a server when we asked which menu was valid. We definitely won't be back...

I had the excellent beef rib steak with a beer, a very tasty dessert. The service is very attentive, and the ambiance is truly homely. The food is fantastic.

A very traditional restaurant and bar close to the city center. We went there on a Saturday evening, so we knew it was gonna be crowded. But the waiter said he puts us on a list and we can get some beers and wait at the bar for 30 minutes. We waited a bit longer and the first beers took pretty long (around 30 minutes). The second round of beers came pretty fast afterwards. We all ordered the Haxe with Sauerkraut and Bratkartoffeln. The food arrived pretty fast, maximum 15 minutes wait time. The crust of the Haxe was crispy and delicious. The meat was tender and well spiced. The Bratkartoffeln were nice and served with Bacon and onions. The sauerkraut was Really good too and complimented the dish. I would definitely recommend that place. But either reserve a table before or go not on the weekend. So it's less crowded.

Unfortunately, very disappointing and somewhere between 1 and 2 stars. First of all: there were apparently problems with the cash register. But that doesn't excuse everything. The service seemed quite overwhelmed, even though the restaurant was only moderately full. The starter (Camembert) was okay. Unfortunately, we continued with a pork schnitzel. This was undercooked at one end and therefore quite tough. I left some of it behind. My polite reminder was met with a shrug and a "I'll pass it on." The accompanying salad was also completely forgotten. Perhaps the hefty price tag of €22 doesn't even include it...or perhaps they don't even dare to try it themselves. The question of whether mayo or ketchup could be served with the fries was skipped, as was the question of whether I would like something else to drink (no, an empty glass apparently doesn't tell the whole story). When I wanted to pay and asked a waiter, he snapped his fingers behind him and barked "colleague" at me. Oh, sorry I was trying to get rid of money. The cashier took my card payment (including an 11% tip, because I'm well-mannered) and snorted in annoyance when I asked for the receipt. Well, thanks a lot. I've only heard good things about Leve so far, and I'm always looking for places to take business friends who have traveled far and wide to show them a bit of Münsterland. Leve is no longer one of them, as of today, because the Westphalian has a bit more friendliness.

We went there two days in a row on our first visit to Münster. Everything is done to make you feel comfortable. Birthday children enjoy a tablecloth and a candle. Traditional Westphalian cuisine with select dishes and a well-stocked drinks menu. Excellent, somewhat quirky service and excellent food. The value for money is also good. The guests range in age from breastfeeding babies to great-grandparents. Reservations are highly recommended. The best way to get there is on foot along the nearby promenade, as you may have to wait in line at the almost adjacent Alter Steinweg parking garage, at least on Saturdays.

Beautiful, rustic ambiance – truly cozy. Overall, though, it was a bit overrated and very touristy. The snails were really good, but the pork knuckle couldn't compete.

We stayed at the inn two evenings in a row. Everyone was happy. Really great food, good portions, fair prices... just a great inn.

Rather inconspicuous from the outside, but very rustic and very comfortable inside. Of course there is a lot of activity (probably mainly tourists), good food, of course Münster specialties, super friendly service, prices quite okay by today's standards.

Wir waren zu sechst im Gasthaus Leve. Ich hatte auf der Karte die Lammhaxe mit Bohnen und Bratkartoffeln bestellt. Die Qualität meiner Haxe war in Ordnung. Allerdings kamen die Bratkartoffeln in einer Schüssel für vier Personen. Ich gehe davon aus, daß wenn ich ein Gericht mit Bratkartoffeln bestelle, nicht meine Bratkartoffeln mit vier Personen teilen muss. Für 29 Euro kann man schon eigene Bratkartoffeln erwarten. Es wurde zwar auf Anfrage noch mal Kartoffeln gebracht, aber das Gesicht des Kellners sprach Bände.

Excellent quality with suppliers from the region. Plus traditional regional cuisine paired with classics with an extra lunch menu. The ambience is a matter of taste; the traditional look also predominates here.

This traditional German restaurant lived up to its expectations. Went over easter and it was heaving. Maybe that’s why service was stretched but still professional and friendly. The food was great just a touch too salty for our tastes - we just arrived from Paris so maybe a matter of acclimatisation.

Stopped here for lunch after a nice stroll through the city, a really nice ambience with a view through the centuries. The menu is good, middle-class, Münsterland - excellent taste. Prices are absolutely reasonable and the staff is extremely friendly!

The ambience is very, very, very, very good. A must when you are in Münster. However, I didn't like the wheat beer, it was too fruity for me. Orange and citrus tones predominate. It had almost no carbonation.

Authentic gastronomy in Münster and simply an institution in Münsterland. Honest Westphalian cuisine with many original recipes, well prepared and served by friendly service. There are also good wines and of course a very good beer selection!

The Gasthaus Leve is always great. We drive 50km to eat there. The rooms, the courteous service and of course the excellent food make up for the long journey. We have already reserved for next time.

I came with an employee from a business partner. He recommended special food. For me, the four sausages and pickled cabbage are slightly spicy. My dad's is meat and the sauce is like sweet and sour pork sauce. This person is a sausage Among the four sausages, one is like blood sundae and one is cooked. One is fried and the other is like a burger patty. Very good My dad's drink is non-alcoholic beer. I like beer. This person is German, but he doesn't drink beer often. Coke Zero This is a classic restaurant that started in 1607. I walked for over 10 minutes from the station.

The three of us ate today in the old Leve inn and were very satisfied. We ate from the lunch menu - a small Jägerschnitzel with excellent, homemade mashed potatoes (11.20 euros), - a wonderfully tender and juicy veal cream goulash with spaetzle and a delicious cucumber salad (22 euros), - two Kassler steaks gratinated with pear and brie, served with boiled potatoes. We couldn't think of anything that could have been done better, and the crowning glory was a very tasty walnut ice cream sundae. We were welcomed and served by a very friendly and attentive waiter who had learned his trade. The restaurant was very clean and the interior was very comfortable. We would be happy to come back and recommend this restaurant.

The pork knuckle was delicious. Portion sizes were big, so definitely come hungry. Service was good and overall a solid dining experience. Make sure you reserve to avoid waiting. We had to wait a little and eventually share a table but it didn’t stop us from enjoying the food.

Reputation is better than quality. Due to the poor acoustics and the stress, it is not really understood what drinks the guest is ordering.

Service underground. Despite asking in advance whether you can only drink something, when the drink is brought you are directed to the bar by the extremely unfriendly “operations manager” in a sergeant-like manner. There you have to consume the expensive beer while standing up.

Very disappointing end to a great stay in Münster. We felt degraded as guests and treated very unkindly - a shame. Rarely have we seen something so derogatory from a seemingly responsible person in such a location.

A great German Restaurant, true German and super Food

For fans of Westphalian hospitality and good home cooking, this place in Münster is a must. Rustic, Westphalian, traditional. Always happy!

It is a typical brewery. The food is solid. Simply a little too expensive for the price. The service is nice, but not particularly attentive or committed. Price-performance ratio is just okay. Recommendation: You can't go wrong if you stop here. But it's not like you're missing out on anything or that you can easily recommend it.

A Westphalian original. If you like Westphalian cuisine, you should try Lewe. Rustic ambiance. A treat for the palate and the eyes. In winter, the kale with Mettendchen (a kind of sausage) is my favorite. Reservations recommended.

A place to which you will return again and again, be it for a relaxed dinner or a meeting with friends. Simply good.

A very nice, quirky atmosphere. Attentive service, and the food is simply delicious (we ordered wedding soup, beef roulades with red cabbage and mashed potatoes, and a nut ice cream dessert). Highly recommended.

Wir waren zum Mittagessen mit 15 Personen angemeldet. Zwei Tische in einem Nebenraum waren für uns reserviert. Jeder bekam die Hauptkarte und die Mittagskarte (diese war tagaktuell). Die Getränke und das Essen kamen zügig. Das Essen war durchweg bei allen ein Genuss ! Klare Empfehlung. Reservieren nicht vergessen .

Very tasty German cuisine. I especially liked the pork knuckle. The beer is tasty and there is a large selection from kegs. Korn made them very happy. The service was excellent, people came up to us and asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. There was a coloring menu for the child.

The inn is temporarily closed! Due to kitchen renovation!! I walked there! I was annoyed with Google...they know everything! 🤔

Ik heb getwijfeld of ik slecht of voldoende zou aankruisen, maar aangezien het verwachtte niet werd waar gemaakt toch voor slecht gekozen. De man aan de entree was zeer hartelijk. Zijn présence is een grote pluspunt voor dit establishment. Een 30 minuutjes wachten had meneer gezegd. Even wachten bij de bar. Echter stonden we er op een gegeven bijna een uur en dit was niet prettig. De bar gaf zeer weinig bewegingsruimte om te wachten. Het had iets van een Total body workout.. we stonden eigenlijk altijd in de weg omdat alle serveersters met eten er langs moesten en je daardoor bijna bij iemand op tafel moest gaan zitten. De serveersters riepen soms luid dat mensen aan de kant moesten en keken hierbij boos. Regelmatig duwde een serveerster tegen mij aan. Ik begrijp echter hun frustratie volkomen. Wachtende bezoekers staan in de weg en je kan ook nergens op een barkruk zitten. We hadden honger en waren klaar met het duwen trekken en aan de kant gaan en hebben twee drankjes afgerekend en zijn vertrokken.

Wat een leuke lunch op zaterdag, restaurant is lekker druk en we moesten even wachten aan de bar. Echt heel lekker gegeten, ruime kaart, op zaterdag dan, op andere dagen is de lunch keuze iets beperkter, maar denk nig steeds goed, want dit was wel een hele ruime keus. Ze hebben ook een losse lunchkaart met lagere prijzen en minder grote porties. Een hele leuke ervaring en zeker een aanrader!

The old Leve inn was recommended to us and that's exactly why the fourth of us were there. We were assigned a seat at the entrance even though we didn't reserve and it was already very full. The food was excellent and, above all, very Westphalian. The service was exemplary and very nice. The atmosphere in the restaurant can be described as very rustic. Somehow like being in a very cozy museum, time seemed to have stood still here. It's definitely not the last time we've been here. Thank you for the lovely hours.

Wir hatten mittwochvormittags telefonisch einen Tisch für 3 Personen für den folgenden Donnerstagabend für 17.30 h angefragt und die Info erhalten, dass alles ausgebucht sei. Auf unseren Hinweis, dass wir aus dem Sauerland kommend um 19.00h wieder zurückfahren würden, erhielten wir die Antwort, um diese Zeit sei sicher ein Tisch frei, wir sollten einfach früh da sein, dann ließe sich das einrichten. Bei unserer Ankunft um 17.15h wurde uns von der Empfangsdame knapp beschieden, es sei alles ausgebucht. Auf unsere Mitteilung zu dem Telefonat am Vortag wurden wir in einem äußerst barschen Ton belehrt, dass sei schließlich keine Reservierung, sie wolle aber mal sehen, ob evtl. doch ein Tisch frei sei. Dann wurde für uns ein Tisch "gefunden" mit dem kurzen Hinweis: "bis längstens 18.45h". Auch die junge Bedienung war dann von einem sehr rustikalen knappen Charme. Bisher haben wir immer gern in dem Gasthaus unsere gelegentlichen Aufenthalte in Münster ausklingen lassen und schätzten die gesamte Atmosphäre und gute Küche. Aber eine derart unfreundliche Behandlung veranlasst uns künftig ein anderes Lokal aufzusuchen.

Old school gastronomy, simply good.

It was my first time eating in a country inn with a large group of people. The restaurant is very cozy, but also quite cramped. It was very loud because of the many guests and you could hardly understand the person you were talking to. We got there early and I was surprised that our food was prepared in a very timely manner. I enjoyed the deer ragout. In general, I think the prices are very high. Unfortunately, I probably wouldn't stop by as a guest again because of that. Even a salad costs over 20 euros.

We were there with our regulars on a Saturday lunchtime. Even though the dining room was very full, we were looked after wonderfully. The menu is very diverse and the food is very tasty. There is also a nice number of different beers. Highly recommended
