"Altes Europa" lives up to its name – and that's no small feat. The wooden tables here have a charming patina, a rarity in this part of Berlin. The menu features delicious Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) instead of "small dishes for sharing." And if you're lucky, you might find someone at the next table reading Proust. In summer, the outdoor seating is delightful. A reliable establishment in Berlin-Mitte for years, and a place you'll happily grow old in.

The menu is quite small. They have three choices for appetizers, and three choices for the main course. You definitely get your money worth because the dishes are very big and super delicious. The location of the restaurant especially the small terrace underneath the tree is quite romantic and I could totally see myself having a date here. The service was great, very friendly. The way the dishes were served was excellent, and they even offered for us to have shared the dishes. All in all, I highly suggest people to come here for an easy dinner in the neighborhood. You immediately feel at home here.

very rude waiter/bar tender. I went there 3 times and the third one was beyond my limit. The waiter/bar tender did not greet us we sat at the bar, then he came to us telling us rudely " can't you see that there is nobody behind the bar, you can't sit here"... he vaguely showed us a table for us to sit and we ordered a bottle of wine, he refused to advise... he was rude to 2 other groups, one of them left. and the other was asked to wait for their UBER away from the restaurant because they were too loud... The cuisine is generous and not bad, but this waiter is rwally too rude for me to go back

Really cosy restaurant in the middle of Berlin. We came here for dinner and came back 2 more times before we left ! The kasespatzle and chocolate cake is delicious. And everything is homemade! Cocktails are also delicious. The espresso martini was so yum !

I've been going to the store for over 6 years, always friendly and nice, but apparently the owners have changed or something has happened. I'll never come back as a Berliner again! Ciao waited over 40 minutes for food!! Extremely unfriendly new waitress who didn't even want to do well, turned into a real yuppie shop

ALL-in-ONE - very nice restaurant with delicious and cleverly prepared dishes as well as a cool bar with a large selection of long drinks and cocktails. Highlight: Espresso Martini. Definitely try it! The "AE" is very cozy and impresses with its special charm. There is also an extra smoking room here (with a wild boar's head on the wall ;), which is becoming increasingly rare even for Berlin. I will be back!

We were there with a few friends, the food was great, unfortunately the female waiter was an absolute nightmare, she only came to the table very rarely and was extremely unfriendly. You have the feeling that you are not wanted there. She then sloppily slapped the drink orders in the middle of the table after an hour because she probably couldn't remember who made the order, the same with the food. Someone like that shouldn't be let loose on people as a service worker. As a restaurant owner, I would terminate her immediately. ABSOLUTE DAMAGE TO REPUTATION!!!! Yes

Great ambience, rude staff and high prices. I prefer to go to bars where I feel welcome as a guest. I'd be happy to pay a few euros more for that.

Actually a nice restaurant with unfortunately very poor, unfriendly service, where you feel less like a guest than a commodity (a few very nice waiters are expressly excluded).

Spanish friends, flee! Pretentious and very expensive for what they are used for. The portions are large but why the hell do I want to eat half a kilo of spaghetti with butter for 21 euros? If you dream of dining surrounded by aspiring influencers who go out to smoke after each dish, congratulations, you've found your ideal place. The service is ok, but I didn't expect less for what they charge. Ah! 30 euros for a German cachopo, for that money we are going to Asturias and we have money left over for dessert.

All you can say about the waiters is: what a bunch of losers 😂. If there is a free table somewhere else, go there and save yourself the trouble.

A hidden gem in the heart of Berlin. We've had an amazing time here with great food and drinks, and amazing hosts! We found Altes by chance and spent multiple evenings there during our stay in Berlin (we tried almost everything on the menu). Carolyn is the most amazing hostess, providing top shelf service and recommendations for us to see during our stay. We'll definitely be back. Highly recommended! Really nice place to sit outside or inside. Very central and yet calm. The food is fresh and delicious. We took the Burratina with tomatos and the Ceviche.

Summary: Good food, but behaving bad to non-german speakers. Not recommend. Great looking delicious food. Although per dish 20 euro (high for berlin), portions are big. Quality wine, I recommend the Riesling. However we have been treated not nicely. Although we were sitting 4 people in a 2 people table, when 2 of us didn't want to eat a dish and wanted to continue with wine and olives, the waitress told us "You need to order every person 1 meal. I will allow it this once but don't to it in the future". We were shocked since one of us was on a diet and other was not eating meat. But it was still alright until we talked with the table next to us. When we asked the german speaking table if they ate and how was the behavior of the waitress, they said the waitress told them they can enjoy as much as they want and they don't have to order meals. It is very sad that in this day and age we still see this treatment.

Our Go-to-place for nice German food in the hood. Usually great quality. The place has a very nice atmosphere, is both casual and cosy as well. You can taste the original Berlin here. The staff is friendly and welcoming. If the weather is good you can sit outside as well, the street is very calm.

Is it actually a thing for you that you only hire waiters who have failed in their job? Or can't even manage to be friendly to guests? Seems so. Even if you read the reviews here. Recently I was there and out again twice in quick succession. This shop is now done for me. Even as a Berliner it's just the bottom drawer. It's better to continue partying at Berghain and look for a job that suits you, is all I'm saying. Although there isn't much left then. For so much “professionalism” there is a reward of one star...

This spot is my go-to for German food. I absolutely adore their Käsespätzle and Schnitzel. They also serve incredible cream brûlée. Definitely worth making a reservation in advance!

The ambience and quality are sooo good, but the service makes so much difference and the arrogant, annoyed manner of the waiter doesn't leave the customer feeling like they're just annoying, and that really shouldn't be the case.

Altes Europa - alte Werte Ich liebe diese regional Bistroküche. Man findet immer was passendes auf der Karte. Und leckeres zu trinken gibt es auch. Die Tische draußen auf dem Bordstein liegen wunderbar unter schattigen Bäumen. Die Meter über die Straße scheut der emsige Service nicht. Schnell wird man bedient und versorgt. Alles in allem ein wirklich schöner Ort. Mit gutem Service. Beim Blick auf das Bild bekomme ich auch schon wieder Sehnsucht. Vielen Dank für alles

Hatten nur eine Käseplatte, Oliven und Brot als Essen, waren damit aber zufrieden. Die Hauptspeisen bei anderen Gäst:innen sahen verlockend aus. Drinks sind nicht günstig, aber für Mitte normal und schmecken sehr gut, auch die alkoholfreien Cocktails. Vibe war entspannt, konnten sogar nen paar Songs auf die Playlist des Barkeepers setzen.

Surement le meilleur restaurant ou j'ai pu manger à Berlin, superbe ambiance, la musique est géniale (le barman chante et danse !!), très convivial. Et la nourriture est bonne. Que demander de plus ?

De passage à Berlin trois semaines nous sommes allés 2 fois dîner à Altes Europa . C'est un restaurant que nous avons connu il y a 10 ans pu plus et dont nous aimions le décor et une certaine authenticité . Le singe sur le mur est toujours là , la peinture bleu pâle des murs dans la deuxième salle ainsi que le plafond noir orné d'un liseré rouge. La nourriture très allemande est plutôt bonne quoique un peu lourde ...La première fois on a voulu nous mettre sur une petite table à 2 en négociant nous avons eu une table de 3 , beaucoup de tables étaient vides,le personnel était limite , la 2ème fois ils étaient presque aimables . La troisième fois ce soir on les a dérangé ... on est arrivé vers 21 h , rebelote avec la table à 2 et réponse limite hostile , nous avons pris 2 entrées et une bouteille de bordeaux (la 1ere bouchonnée , ils l'on remplacée), et puis à 9h45 ils nous annoncé que la cuisine était fermée et que c'était fini et cela brutalement . Colère de ma femme et moi mais on avait devant nous un pseudo patron beauf allemand et 2 serveurs agressifs.Dommage il y a quelques années le presque même scénario s'était passé et nous n'y étions pas retournés , pourtant ce n'était pas les mêmes personnes .Conclusion: l'endroit est gâché par l'hyper-tourisme et le cynisme amer qui s'est emparé d'une partie de Berlin (peut-être en partie à juste raison) et par le non professionnalisme du patron de ce restaurant et de sa vulgarité.

Nie wieder. Der Abend hätte so schön sein können, wäre da nicht der unfreundliche Kellner der einen schon zu Begrüßen anmotzt. In drei Stunden vor Ort kam nur zweimal jemand an unseren Tisch um nach unseren Wünschen zu fragen. Also wir fragten, ob wir noch etwas bestellen können, keifte man uns mit „Moment“ an. Die Preise auf der Karte waren nicht eindeutig gekennzeichnet was beim Bezahlen zu Verwirrung führt auf die der Kellner sofort aggressiv reagierte. Das Essen war sehr gut aber trotzdem überteuert (30€ für Schnitzel mit Pfifferlingen). Da gebe ich mein Geld lieber woanders aus.

Mein Kumpel war am Tag zuvor schon da gewesen und wollte unbedingt noch mal hin, weil es so nett war und gutes Essen gäbe. Ich war also instruiert, dass draußen lauter Tische ein Reserviert-Schildchen haben, aber gar nicht reserviert sind, sondern dass man, wenn man essen möchte, dort auch einen Tisch kriegt, weil draußen reserviert wird gar nicht. Offensichtlich war aber heute nicht die nette Dame von gestern da, sondern ein eigenwilliger junger Mann, der der Meinung war, lieber drei Vierertische den ganzen Abend leer stehen zu lassen, als an dem einen oder anderen Vierertisch zwei Gäste unterzubringen! Wir sind also fast schon wieder weg, als im letzten Augenblick die nette Dame von gestern kommt und uns zwei Plätze besorgt. Essen war gut 15 € für zwei Buletten ist zwar viel, waren aber auch sehr lecker und sehr leckere Beilagen kann man also durchaus empfehlen insbesondere sitzt man draußen im Sommer sehr schön.

Insgesamt gut. Komme gerne mal wieder

Waren zu viert essen, wurden zügig bedient und versorgt. Essen war gut, Auswahl überschaubar. Rauch aus der Lounge wahrnehmbar, alles in Allem in Ordnung .

Leider nicht empfehlenswert. Von außen sieht es nett aus, aber der Besitzer hat einen unglaublich unangenehmen Umgang mit den Gästen. Man will sich nicht mehr als nötig dort aufhalten. Das Essen ist auch den Preisen leider nicht gewachsen.

Wir waren gestern im Lokal zum Essen. War sehr lauf, Musik lief auch noch. Die Auswahl an Gerichten war nicht üppig. Wir hatten wahrscheinlich das falsche bestellt, das Wildgulasch. Das Essen kam nicht auf einem Teller, sondern in einer Schüssel. War nicht schön anzusehen. Wir waren sehr hungrig, das beste war der gebratene Semmelklos. Tipp an die Küche: Das braucht ihr nimmer kochen, das war nix. Die zwei Mädels, die bedienten waren total nett, freundlich und zuvorkommend, da gib es nix zu meckern

Schade! Das Alte Europa war für mich viele Jahre lang ein bodenständiger und gemütlicher Ort im sonst so touristischen und abgehobenen Mitte. Ob mit größeren Gruppen zum Essen oder spontan auf ein Bier. Die Zeiten sind vorbei. Beim letzten Besuch wurden wir nach dem ersten Getränk aufgefordert zu gehen, weil wir an der Bar nur Bier und Weinschorle (6 Euro) trinken wollten und keinen rentablen Gin Tonic !!! Dazu der fehlende Service: Die erste Bestellung mussten wir dem Barkeeper förmlich aufdrängen. Ein großes Bier war nicht bestellbar, da kein großes Glas mehr da war. Niemand hat sich erkundigt, ob wir gerne noch etwas hätten.

Auf den ersten Blick ein wirklich schönes Restaurant. Vorallem abends ein tolles Ambiente mit stilvollem Essen im Kerzenschein in einem rustikal eingerichteten Restaurant. Schade, dass man beim betreten der Lokalität von einer Wand aus Zigarettenrauch begrüßt wird, die das Speisen hier fast unerträglich macht. Vorallem als Nichtraucher ist der penetrante Gestank nach Zigaretten schon sehr unangenehm. Das Essen ist ziemlich überteuert, wenn man bedenkt, dass man für eine Vorspeise mit 15€ fast genauso viel zahlt, wie in anderen Restaurants für ein Hauptgericht. Die Hauptspeisen sind zwar reichlich, aber auch hier mit einem hohen Preisschild versehen. Bei manchen Speisen hat es die Küche mit dem Salz auch etwas zu gut gemeint. Die Käsespätzle waren doch leider sehr versalzen. Was den Service betrifft kann ich mich anderen Rezensionen nur anschließen. Man könnte fast meinem, die Kellner liefern sich einen Wettstreit, wer das geringste Trinkgeld bekommt. Wirklich grauenhaft, unhöflich und noch dazu absolut unpassend gekleidet. Schade, dass auch nicht daran gedacht wurde, "To Go" Behälter vorrätig zu haben, um übrig gebliebenes Essen mitnehmen zu können. So wird einem das Essen lieblos in einen dicken Ball aus Alufolie gewickelt und anschließend in die Hand gedrückt. Alles in allem verschenkt das Restaurant viel Potenzial und lädt nicht dazu eine erneut zu kommen. Es gibt bessere Orte in Berlin, um teuer deutsche Küche zu genießen. Und das ohne Zigarettenrauch und schlechten Service.

Ich mag den Laden. Allerdings war die Bedienung doch sehr seltsam. Schnippisch,leicht arrogant und nicht gut. Schade denn der Laden ist toll. Das Essen ist gut, die Getränke und das Flair...nur die Dame ist ...nee nicht gut.

Unfriendly staff. Told us to pick a table of choice then asked us to change straight away because our table was for 3 and we were only two when they simply could have moved a chair to the next table. We told them we only wanted wine and it was fine until next waiter came and told us it was for dinner guests only. Did same to serveral other custumers as well.
