Alt Helgoländer Fischerstube in Hamburg

As always, first class. Enjoy in Northern German in a Hanseatic atmosphere. For us it is still the first address when it comes to fish.

We were greeted very friendly and were allowed to sit down at our reserved table earlier (almost half an hour). When it came to eating, we opted for the (somewhat expensive) menu. It was really delicious, beautifully presented and with great flavor combinations. Very attentive and friendly service staff who were never intrusive. We felt very comfortable and had a wonderful culinary evening. We will be happy to come back.

This is a place, if you want to taste authentic north-german food. My wife and I ordered the Hamburg Eel Soup, "Lange Anna" and Pickled Young Herring ala Helgoland. 1. Lange Anna : Flaky texture of the fish fillets. The sauce is so smooth. The cheesy and creamy flavour profile of the sauce is perfect for cold days. The basmati rice is a superb side dish to soak up the sauce. 2. Pickled Young Herring ala Helgoland : The three different sauces are the highlights of this dish. This is an acquired taste for foreign tourists though. However, this is one of the iconic dishes of North Germany. 3. Hamburg Eel Soup : The acidic taste of the soup brightens the fishy aroma. However, the restaurant could work on taste of the eel in the future. The strong freshwater aroma, especially from the skin and fat layer of the eel pieces somewhat disturbs. Slightly bigger, more eel pieces or using smoked eels instead of the fresh one could accentuate this dish better.

We have booked a table for December 31st, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. We got there 15 minutes early, but didn't have to wait. Our table was in a corner on a platform. The waiter was a well-groomed young man with a pleasant personality and very good manner of expression. We ordered a starter and main course when he brought us the drinks. Every seat in the restaurant was occupied and yet drinks and dishes were quickly brought to the table. After we had the battered shrimp as a starter, we were already convinced of the quality. You could already taste the freshness of the ingredients here and we were looking forward to the zander fillet in the risotto bed. Here, too, there wasn't a long wait until the main course was served. The zander fillet was sensational, the skin was crispy, the fillet was juicy and tender. The risotto was creamy, the rice was al dente, the parmesan was baked and decoratively added as a cheese crust. The combination with the baked cocktail tomatoes, the Parmesan and the risotto was wonderfully seasoned. We enjoyed it very much and we would love to come back. Absolutely deserves 5 stars.

The Alt Helgoländer Fischerstuben are an institution in Hamburg. Since it opened in 1989, we have been there 2-3 times every year (we come from out of town). Sometimes alone or with friends. And we have never been disappointed. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is great. And first the service. You can change your food without any problems, no hassle at all. So we can fully recommend this restaurant. What I can also recommend: The fried shrimp with sweet and hot chili sauce.

Very nice service and super delicious food (especially the sole)! All in all, the visit there was once again worth it and we'll be back!

I would particularly like to highlight the service. There were three of us. One is severely visually impaired. The service responded particularly well to this! Great.

We were guests here for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. Refreshing Hanseatic service, excellent food, a martini that you could actually call martini. We would be happy to come again.

Excellent place! I was here in 2018, and now again 6 years later. The service was impeccable and friendly both times, as was the food. Eel soup and herring platter was great. Lovely place to get a break from the bustle of neighbouring St. Pauli.

Food very tasty. Panfish was great, mustard sauce was delicious with it. Labskaus at least the best in the last few years if not in my last 58 years 😊 The dessert was delicious, so good that the absence of the rum raisins didn't affect us. I believe the staff goes the extra mile to ensure guests have the best experience. We really liked the decor, especially our table by the window with a view of the Elbe and shipping. Parking lot (chargeable €6 for 2 hours / guarded) 2 minutes away. We'll be back in spring (at the latest) to see the outdoor area, which of course isn't used in December. I don't rate the whole thing in terms of price. Labskaus 23 € and as I said delicious. Just got the worst labskaus in Bremerhaven for €29. Price-performance fits for us!

Fish soups were really good. We have tried eel and crab. As main course, we have tried mixed fish and pike with risotto. If I visit here next time, I wouldn't order mixed plate. Pike Perch was good.

One of the best restaurants in Hamburg. We come from the Ruhr area and have been able to have a first class dinner here several times. If you like eating fish, you can't miss the Helgoland fish restaurants. Everything was really great: culinary, ambience and service

Bediening was uit de kunst. Alert, vriendelijk en voorkomend. We hoefden om niets te vragen. Werkelijk fantastisch. Helaas was de vis van de hoofdgerechten over gaar. Dit werd door de bediening ogenblikkelijk opgepakt en resulteerde in koffie van het huis. Bediening dus super! Vis van beide gerechten minder.

When I moved to Germany, every day was full of meat dishes. As I was walking through the port city of Hamburg, I felt like eating fish for the first time in a long time, so I found a nice restaurant and went in. For lunch I tried marinated sea bream fillet. It went very well with the white wine and was delicious.

Nice fish restaurant in the heart of St Pauli, right opposite the fishing auction hall and the fish market. The food is very nicely prepared and extremely tasty. The service was very accommodating and very nice, attentive and friendly. The prices are not too high, reasonable and the selection of food is great. Highly recommended

We were there today and as soon as we walked in we were impressed by the staff. We had reserved in advance and they had a very nice table ready for us where our dog could lie protected under the bench. The staff served us in a smart, friendly manner in a North German way. Wonderful. Since I rarely go out to eat because I usually don't like what is offered to me, I and we were really impressed by the good food that was brought to us. The whole ambience is very well maintained and noticeably clean from the dining room to the toilets. All in all a very positive dining experience tonight.

Steamed cod with vegetables, potatoes and mustard sauce. It tasted fantastic. Fresh and perfectly prepared. The waiters are friendly and attentive.

I reserved a table for my girls yesterday for 6 p.m. Great ambience. Sensational service. Great menu. The table by the window with a side view of the harbor. The plaice, the crabs, the bacon, the fried potatoes and the potato salad were just perfect. Awesome. Thanks to the whole team who made the evening unforgettable for my wife.

Everything is perfect here: from the service to the dishes. We have been here several times in the last few years, always a friendly welcome, attentive and fast service and food that is fresh and culinary excellent, both visually and on the palate. We would be happy to come back.

Very good pan fish. Portions not very big, but still okay. Seemed a bit out of place with kids.

Service top. Plaice and baked prawns are good. Wiener schnitzel average. Salads fresh and tasty...dessert cappucino cream hardly tasted like cappucino.

We ate here with our daughter. The reception and service was friendly. The food was simply delicious. We found it positive that there was a menu for children. Unfortunately, this was not available in another fish restaurant nearby and we had to order a “large” dish for our daughter. We would therefore be happy to come back on our next visit to Hamburg.

On October 22nd, 2024 we had dinner with four people in the Althelgoländer Fischerstube. Both the Labskaus, which our friends chose as a starter, and the Heligoland crab cream soup, which we chose, were real taste buds. For the main course we chose the Hamburg panfish three times and the Helgoland herring platter once. The four of us agreed that the fried potatoes were excellent. Cooked to perfection, some of them were slightly crunchy and not a single piece of onion, potato wedges or bacon bits were burnt. Unanimous verdict: Perfect! The fish - cleanly filleted and served in an egg shell - super. And everything was served very friendly, attentive and humorous. The price/performance ratio is completely fine. We'll definitely be back soon. All the best

The atmosphere on the Elbe and harbor is just as unique as the preparation of the food and the taste of freshly caught fish.

Visiting Hamburg without going to this restaurant would be a shame

Solid ambience and yet not strained. This is mainly due to the service, which is attentive and fast, sometimes fun, but never intrusive. The food leaves nothing to be desired, upscale home cooking with a focus on fish dishes...as the name suggests.

You're first skeptical when a restaurant starts with the name 'Alt' and then it's in a new building. But when you enter you immediately see that it is very comfortable. Fast friendly service and very good herring platter. Everything is a bit more expensive, but reasonable. It was great. Thank you.

The service is very professional and very nice. We had plaice with bacon and crabs, the quality was absolutely top class. There were no long waiting times even though the restaurant was very full. We can only recommend it.

Very nice restaurant at the fish market with a maritime atmosphere. Excellent food with a reasonable price/performance ratio. Service is very attentive and responds to special requests. We always enjoy coming here and accept a longer journey time to do so. If there is space, you can also park in the underground car park. Call shortly beforehand and the gate will be opened.

Remembered how good the restaurant was in my childhood and now found my way back in. Many good memories came back... The service: courteous, polite, knowledgeable and with that Hamburg sense of humor. The cuisine: high quality, the food and the preparation. The ambience: cozy, stylish. Super friendly welcome, despite the full restaurant we were shown to our seats. Ordering was quick and easy, requests were responded to immediately, e.g. sharing the starter -> two additional plates were immediately brought to us. Food came very quickly despite the large company. Advice on wine was also given upon request. Thank you, we'll be happy to come back.

We had not reserved in advance, but luckily we were still able to get a table for 2. We had a delicious meal (fish was very well prepared + surprisingly tasty dessert) and nice wine on the menu. The service varied: one seemed tired and stressed to us, the other had time and energy for a chat and a joke.

Very good cuisine and friendly staff. But it's simply not possible to be presented with a wine list in a restaurant where the prices are no longer correct. The menu published on its own website also still shows old prices.

Perfect service and delicious traditional cuisine

As fish lovers, we divided to have dinner at this restaurant. At the end, a very good choice. From the beginning onwards we experienced very friendly and competent staff. As we were hungry, we decided on starter and main. All dishes were delicious and very fresh fish was served in a perfect preparation . Always trying to experience local dishes, I decided on these. Perfectly presented with a delicious mustard sauce. Unfortunately we didn’t have space after that for a desert. As we had such a great experience, we decided to go for a second dinner the next evening and defenitely it will be on our top list on our next Hamburg visit.

As the name suggests, an old Helgolian fisherman's room. A really cute facility that makes you feel good. We had fish soup and two fish dishes. Everything tasted delicious and was freshly prepared. A must when you are in Hamburg. We'd love to come back.

Almost everything was right here. Fantastic fish dishes in a harmonious atmosphere with friendly service. The food came quickly and the plaice was a poem. We had a lovely evening. Just in terms of price, like almost everywhere else, it's an announcement.

Rustically furnished restaurant that is obviously aimed at tourists. The food was okay, but there was definitely room for improvement, the same applies to the service.
