Abang Toto's Malaysian Deli in Köln

A very special restaurant! We found out about the restaurant by chance. A little pearl in the middle of Nippes. We had the Chefs Choice and it was outstanding. There is also great and courteous service. If you want to try something new, you should definitely stop by here.

Very good food! We were in Malaysia a few months ago and the food here was absolutely authentic, at least as good as in Malaysia and very tasty. There are enough vegetarian options, the staff is super friendly and the restaurant is nicely decorated. We would love to come back and can only recommend it :)

We've eaten at the deli several times now. And because I always liked it so much, I ordered catering from Abang Toto's for my birthday party. I can totally recommend it. Advice, delivery including dishes, the food itself and collection of the containers the next day. Everything was perfect! And I wasn't the only one who was extremely satisfied. My guests also raved about the food. Update February 2025 - The Chinese New Year Supper Club was a great experience. The soup with the homemade dumplings was particularly my favorite. Add to that the delicious wine and nice people at the table, what more could you want?

I've been wanting to try the deli for months, but yesterday I finally got around to it and we weren't disappointed. The reception and service were great, super friendly, warm and interested. Since we were a bit overwhelmed with the choice of dishes, we were helped very well. Ultimately we decided on the Chef’s Choice and were very happy with it. At Abang you can expect authentic cuisine, with flavor constellations that are foreign to the European palate, but at the same time very enriching. Minimal downer, there is no alcohol. We were looking forward to a local beer, the alternative was a non-alcoholic craft beer from Italy and in the end we were able to come to terms with that very well 😊 Thank you very much and see you soon!

Our culinary world tour stopped in Malaysia yesterday. The food was very good. The lack of real beer and the rather high prices cost the last star. But thank you for the authentic cuisine!

An incredibly warm and friendly owner who is happy to share his experiences. This also applied to the loving service. We felt incredibly comfortable. In addition (for me) exceptional and very, very tasty food, the Beef Redang Slider as a starter already enchanted me. It's worth trying out.

We had an appointment at the restaurant last week in a small group. The good reviews simply attracted us. Yes, what can I say. I ordered an appetizer (Beef Rendang Slider). The beef rendang was really very tasteful. Unfortunately, the onion and the bread roll were ice cold and therefore didn't taste that good in this combination for me. Whether that's how it's supposed to be, I know it is. For the main course I had number 9 (Ayam Percik). Great meat and first of all the peanut sauce. Top. The food arrived not hot, but very warm. Unfortunately, the guest room was not heated (we had a small oil radiator with us, which unfortunately had far too little power) and the temperature was well below 20 degrees. So the food got cold very quickly. I couldn't eat it so quickly so I could eat it while it was still warm. Really a shame. I didn't feel like having dessert anymore, simply because I was too cold! There were guests who kept their jackets on or put scarves on their legs. The entrance area has an electric sliding door facing the street. So when a new guest came in, all the cold from outside came into the small restaurant. A partition with a heavy cloth (as we know from other restaurants) would have worked wonders. The guest stonomist was friendly. I won't visit the restaurant again in winter, but summer is still coming.

Great authentic malaysian nasi lemak daging rendang. Wont have to travel so far anymore for malaysian food. Sambal isnt spicy but the rice, ikan bilis and rendang is all very good. Highly recommended!

Food is wholesome and tasty. Malay cuisine is a must try for people who like flavourful food. Sweet cute place. Make sure to book reservations. Malay tea is a must try. Ample vegan options. The best part is the friendly service and hospitality.

We ordered the Chefs Choice, normal/non-veg. 65,8 € for the food displayed. 2 people. It was a pleasant experience and we had 1,5 hours of fun and free flow rice, this leads to quite a satisfying feeling. It is a bit pricy though, since the restuarant is a bit on the outer skirts of cologne... but you can not get Malaysian food elsewhere in our area... The service is very good and the flavour is top. Since I am german, I might not be the best judge... but having worked with Asian cooks and traveling to singapore and Asia, I found the dishes to be well made! Would go again!

Delicious food, nice owner, but he only speaks English. But we were very cold because the heating didn't keep up and we left quickly afterwards, so it just wasn't comfortable.

This was so nice!! Lots of vegetarian/vegan options, and so good to have a Malaysian place nearby. We got Nasi Lemak, pineapple and mango salad and Kuih Bakar as well as the trifle for dessert. Not super spicy by Malaysian standards (which I think is nice)! Very balanced taste/texture overall. Drinks options are nice too. I think the prices are very reasonable for the quality :-) we'll come back for teh/kopi tarik, jackfruit rendang and satay!!! Had a good chat with Todd about Malaysian restaurants here and in the US - they're not very easy to come by, so if you're nearby, definitely consider this one.

Glad to find authentic and nostalgic Malaysian flavours in Germany. Tried the Nasi Lemak Rendang with pineapple and cucumber side, Kuih Bakar, Kuih Talam and Kopi Tarik. They truly heeded my request for kurang manis and it was really not too sweet! Shoutout to the lovely warm service by Todd.

Comfy small restaurant, friendly service and of course good food! We tried teh tarik (creamy and not too sweet, you have to try!), nasi lemak (big portion with tasty rendang) and mamak noodle (malaysian style fried noodle with sweet hint). Everything was enjoyable👌🏼

Came here with high expectations and they didn‘t disappoint! We ordered the Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang and it was better than I had imagined. The rice was fragrant and the beef rendang was tender. The rendang spice was so accurate with the savory taste and unique texture of coconut. In contrary to another review I have read as I was scrolling here, as an Indonesia , I believe comparing Indonesian and Malaysian rendang is a totally pointless thing to do 🤪 Both are different and amazing in their own ways and the Malaysian rendang they serve here was *chef‘s kiss* 👍 Mee Goreng Mamak was tasty and had that ‚wok hei‘ that they promised. Served with lots of toppings. The Seasoning was on point and although it looked like it was doused in a bottle of soy sauce, let me convince you that it did not taste overwhelmingly sweet. A great mixture of sweetness, tanginess, and savory taste. I don‘h think I need to write another long paragraph for the Teh Tarik. The picture explained itself. It was creamy and sweet and had that unique Malaysian tea taste. They really took time to curate the ingredients down to their beverage selections 💯 Another bonus point for the cozy and chill atmosphere. Best to come with a reservation because they could also be crowded on a weekday. Left the restaurant with a happy belly. Would I come again if I‘m in Köln again? Definitely. Need to try their Kuih Talam next time.

Great and authentic Malaysian food. Not too spicy so it's good for the German population around. I enjoy the Pandan desert and the Teh tarik very much!

This was our first time eating Malaysian food and we loved it! Had "Chef's Choice" with two exceptional dishes per course (starter, main course and dessert). You could actually taste the loving preparation, the service was very accommodating - all in all a great culinary experience.

I was here for the first time eating Malaysian with some friends. The Papaya Salad and the main dish with Jackfruit were very tasty and a bit spicy (should be indicated in the menu for people who cannot tolerate spicy food), nice alcohol free beer. The trifle dessert was something I never tried before and also nice. Definitely want to come back and try more. The Satay was sadly out and only one of us could try it. Only little point loss for the service, which was friendly but a bit slow.. esp as it got busier. Probably more staff is needed in peak times. Otherwise very nice and familiar little restaurant..

A nice, cozy restaurant with plenty of different food to choose from. A wide variety of starter + main course combinations can be assembled. Most meals are hearty and savoury, yet the salads and several side dishes offer a great balance. It speaks for itself that my friends, who have spent years abroad in the south eastern Asian regions, come back to Abang Toto‘s and suggested this to me. The owner is really friendly, speaks fluid English, loves to have a chat with customers and really engages with them. This and the combination of laid back music, great food and an atmosphere, that makes you forget for a an hour or two, you’re in Cologne really makes this place shine. Whatever you two do: please don’t change but develop further! Much love and I’m looking forward to visit again soon!

We became aware of the restaurant through a newspaper article in Spiegel. And I have to say an absolute insider tip. The food is outstanding. You can immediately tell that they only cook with fresh, high-quality products without using any additives. The prices are more than fair for this quality! The hosts were terrific. You didn't feel like you were sitting in a restaurant at all, but rather like you were with friends in the living room. We will definitely add Abang Toto’s to our regular restaurant repertoire and come over for dinner regularly.

My husband and I went for dinner and it was a great experience. The food was delicious, with very authentic flavors. We had never tried anything like it. Excellent treatment from the moment we walked through the door and good prices. Highly recommended!!

Abang Toto's is an absolute pearl in Weidenpesch!! The owner and service staff are absolutely warm and accommodating. The food is incredibly delicious. If you want to offer your taste buds something special, this is definitely the right place for you. And no matter whether you're a vegan, vegetarian or meat eater - there's something for everyone.

We drove past it many times and finally made it there. If you're looking for original Malaysian dishes, you've come to the right place. What doesn't exist here: The "one-European uniformity". Everything was super tasty and absolutely reasonable for the price.

We had a great team evening at Abang Toto‘s. The coordination with Todd (one of the owners) in advance was very friendly abd reliable. He is a good host who makes sure that his guests feel well looked after. Obe colleague doesn‘t like spicy food, so they cooked her a customised dish even though she said it wasn‘t necessary. The restaurant is clean and modern, the atmosphere is cozy. There is also a large selection of non-alcoholic drinks and the meat is halal. As a vegan, there is also a large selection. I am alread looking forward to the next time!

The food was really tasty, especially Ayam Percik. Todd is the perfect kind of host that every restaurant should have in order to grow to a famous place.

Had a great time here. Malaysian food is not easy to come by here in Germany, so when i first heard of Abang Toto's, i was (cautiously ;) ) excited. Will i get to be reminded of home? I sure did. My personal favourites were the beef rendang (authentic!) and the new item on the dessert menu, the kuih talam. On top of the food, the service was great; down-to-earth and friendly. I can only describe my dining experience as a beautifully orchestrated and excellently executed symphony! Upon opening the door, you are welcomed with a friendly, bright smile, accompanied by the homey feeling of the interior. As for the actual dining experience, everything was a masterpiece and did exactly what good music should do. It soothed with flavor and evoked feelings and memories through its textures and exciting combinations. There is no doubt that it is worth giving it a try if you haven’t yet; for the rest of us, it’s a place to return to again and again!

This is my first time visiting Cologne and I found this amazing Malaysian restaurant not far from the city centre. My wife and I tried their Chicken Satay, Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang and Nasi with Ayam Percik. They are all halal, good portion size and very tasty. I highly recommend it. Abang Toto (Chris), Natalia and Alex are very friendly and welcoming too. Definitely a must visit restaurant in Cologne!

We came here on a recommendation and were not disappointed, on the contrary - the restaurant, the service and especially the food were great! We had the mango salad and satay skewers as starters and fried noodles with tofu and chicken (Mee Goreng) and braised beef ragout with rice, egg and roasted peanuts (Nasi Lemak) as main courses. Malaysian cuisine was previously unknown to us, but the variety of ingredients and flavors is all the more impressive; you can taste the influences from China and India. If you like Asian cuisine and are looking for a new experience, you should head to Weidenpesch, it's worth it!

I'm surprised why the food tastes like that because I saw it on YouTube where the owner is a chef but the taste of the food was very bland. It didn't taste like what I'm used to and the price was quite high at €17 for a main course, especially for the small portion I got. The water was also too bland and not authentic. However, I have to admit that the staff was very friendly and the service was really good. Still, I'm disappointed with the food, I'm sorry to say. 😔

For personal reasons, I am familiar with Indonesian cuisine, especially from Sumatra, Indonesia. Rendang comes from there, you can find Rendang everywhere, and I know how long a good Rendang takes to prepare and what it should taste like. Nasi Lemak is also known in Sumatra. That's why I was curious about Abang Toto, so many good reviews. We ordered Nasi Lemak Rendang Daging, a portion of Rendang Jackfruit and one Ayam Percik. The prices are relatively high compared to other Asian restaurants, so I'm only moderately satisfied after eating because the taste of the food is only okay compared to the Indonesian original. And there remains a conflicting feeling between price and performance, as the portions are rather manageable. Just satisfactory for me, 3 stars.

A little pearl on Neusser Straße! The owner loves his restaurant, Asian cuisine and his guests. You immediately feel at home here. The food is excellent and the homemade iced tea is highly recommended - incredibly refreshing!

Maybe the mistake was that we visited it less than a week after our Malaysia vacation, still in full Malaysia madness. The portions were ok, but not good, and the taste was also just ok. The prices were very high. Of course I can't expect a dish to cost €2 like in Malaysia, but I found €17 for a bit of rice with a chicken breast in peanut sauce extremely expensive. Especially because it tasted at least twice as good in Malaysia. In the end we paid €35 ​​per person WITHOUT alcohol (they don't have it there) and 1-2 drinks per person. The service is super nice, but couldn't save my experience. Overall found it disappointing for the price.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Malaysian restaurant and I love it! From start to finish it was a wonderful evening. We selected the Chef's Choice menu. The service was simply fantastic - super friendly and attentive. We received extra packaging for the leftovers (huge portions) so that we could enjoy the delicious food again the next day. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience that I would highly recommend to everyone. If you love Malaysian food and want to have a nice evening, then this restaurant is definitely the right choice!

I can’t understand how this restaurant get a 4.9 rating. There were only 3 tables with guests when we were there. But we still waited for our foods fast an hour. If you are hungry or don’t have too much time, it’s better to find another place. And they only speak English. So it’s not easy to communicate with them.

The drive out there is worth it! Super cool shop with very friendly staff including the owner. The food was excellent and I have never eaten so good in Germany. There are also various, very tasty beers from Freedl Non-Alcoholic! We are thrilled and will be back!

We found this hidden gems of Cologne when searching for Indonesian food. Well, Malaysia is neighbor country of Indonesia so let's try it. The restaurant has a simple modern but yet with still Asian atmosphere. Immediately noticed the very friendly service from a lovely young lady who knows well their menus, hence good recommendations given to us. The foods came within good reasonable time. Good temperature. Portion size of main course is big for my Asian stomach 😉, very well priced. When we ate it, the taste was delicious 🤤 Rendang taste great, different to Indonesian rendang served in Indonesian restaurant but I recognize it from home made rendang cooked by friend's mom who originally from West Sumatra (but not from Padang). Great decision that we made it all the way from city center to this restaurant - by trams. Recommended.

Great tasting food and a relaxing atmosphere. The flavours felt very unique and authentic. We will definitely come back. Dessert looked so good that we forgot to take a photo before eating it.
