Abang Toto's Malaysian Deli in Köln

We wanted to try Malaysian food and we gave it a go in this little restaurant. The staff was friendly and the food was yummy and fresh. I tried the dish of the month, some rice noodles with nice spices and tofu and my husband the tipical dish with jack fruit, rice and sauce (vegan version). We were the first diner guest so the food was served promptly. We definitely recommend it! I loved that they have vegan options!

Sometimes you really wonder what's wrong with all the reviews. €43 for two dishes Dry rice with no sauce A few nuts and cucumbers and three tiny pieces of chicken? Really nothing special! The owner must be making a fortune. Maybe €4 per dish at the retail price. No one can sell this to me as authentic cuisine. Oh yeah, the coconut milk was also missing.

The love of the owner and his hospitality is indescribable... you can feel it, and you enjoy the meal with a wonderful experience. The way the dishes and drinks are selected is very thoughtful and thoughtful... I particularly liked the user-friendly website with its simply symbolized food categories, which definitely helped me (who never makes a quick decision) to order what best suited me, my needs, and my taste... Absolutely recommend it, everyone!!! Please go have dinner there!!!

Incredibly friendly and delicious!

We had a wonderful culinary journey with a warm and attentive guide. We wisely chose to eat a small breakfast and skip lunch so we could sample as much as possible. From the homemade soft drinks to the appetizers, from the main courses to the dessert, the flavors were simply multifaceted and stunningly aromatic, not too spicy, not too sweet, not too salty—simply perfect. The trip to Weidenpesch is worth it; after all, you can get all the way to Malaysia! Favorites were the mango salad and the jackfruit dish. The rest of the family was particularly impressed by the crispy chicken and the beef... we'll be back!

Food is simple but good. It simply wasn't a mind-blowing experience. I would say if you want to try something new for for it.

A small, very nice restaurant with friendly service and excellent food. The menu is small (which, in my opinion, speaks volumes about the quality), but whether you're a meat-free, poultry-free, or all-you-can-eat kind of person, there's always something good there. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended for this little gem. Finally, a vegan selection with different flavors and textures. The food is on the savory and spicy side, which I really like. Recommendation: Mee Goreng Mamak with tofu. With the caramelized soy sauce, it's simply wow. The Nasi Lemak with the wonderfully spiced jackfruit was also great; I would have preferred the tempeh to be more seasoned and warmer. The coconut rice is very flavorful and soothes the palate very well after the spicy sauces. The service was very friendly and personable. I don't understand why there were so few people here on a Saturday night; the place should be much busier. PS: It wasn't on the menu, but the craft beer from Italy is also available with lime 🤩

Authentic enjoyment at a fair price! I tried Ayam Rempah and Nasi Lemak here – simply unbelievably delicious! The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned with aromatic spices. The Nasi Lemak was just as delicious: the coconut rice smelled wonderful, the sambal was just the right amount of heat, and the side dishes rounded it all off perfectly. The best part? The price was absolutely fair – great quality for a reasonable price. I can recommend this place to anyone who loves authentic Southeast Asian food. I'll definitely be back!

The food is good, but definitely not Malaysian. It feels more like an Indonesian restaurant, with a strong flavour of coconut milk instead of spices.

Super great, friendly host! We immediately felt comfortable and welcome. The iced Tarik tea was great, and the food was simply delicious – it brought back so many memories of our last vacation in Malaysia. We even received a dessert as a farewell gift :) We traveled all the way from Munich and would love to come back!

If the food were prepared as described in their cookbook, it would be great – but it isn't... what a shame. Given the concise menu, I would have preferred more love and authenticity in the preparation. The price/performance ratio is debatable. Not for someone who has already been spoiled by the aromatic and creative cuisine of Malaysia, but it's edible. Ambience? Where?!? Student fast food joint... Friendly, attentive service, but not worthy of a TripAdvisor listing and too expensive.

We spent a wonderful evening at Abang Totos. Having been to Malaysia before, we were already familiar with Malaysian cuisine. And what can I say, we were not disappointed. It tasted incredibly delicious and authentic and brought back some great memories. We opted for the vegan menu for two, and it was perfect. Be sure to come hungry! The owner can tell you a lot about the items on the menu and recommends them, and the evening is rounded off with top-notch service! For those who don't like spicy food, it's best to ask :)

I went to this restaurant in Cologne because I'd gotten to know and appreciate the cuisine in Rotterdam. I actually wanted to try those thin "pancakes," but unfortunately they weren't available. But I have to say, what I got was significantly better than the reason I went there. The appetizer was simply amazing. The mango salad is highly recommended, and the small burgers with jackfruit or beef with kaffir lime are superb. The curry and the udon noodles in caramelized soy sauce are incredibly delicious. The portions are so large, in fact, that I had to fight for them in the end, so I ended up packing some. The service is super attentive and checks repeatedly to make sure everything's okay, and you get your food relatively quickly. A definite recommendation for Cologne!

Absolutely fantastic experience. My wife and I were here for the first time today and had a stellar experience from start to finish. The food was delicious and brilliantly cooked (Michelin-trained chef showing his skills) and the service so attentive and friendly we felt instantly welcome. We even got to chat to Todd, one of the two owners, and learned about the story behind the restaurant. If you like good food and a homey atmosphere, this is your place. 10/10 recommendation and will 100% go again.

Being a Malaysian, abang toto is definitely one of the places in Germany that reminds me of my roots and proud of our Malaysian cuisines . I came to the restaurant today with one other friend and we had an amazing time here. Being served with one of the closest to authentic Malaysian food is just one of the blessings the restaurant could offer. We order two tea tariks, a classic Mee goreng, and the new addition to their menu, nasi lemak with fried chicken. And it was just simply delicious. We also had a wonderful time chatting with the owner of the restaurant, and their fellow staffs including a Malaysian Abang. They are so friendly and welcoming. They even provide us with some snacks while waiting for our food to be served and desserts after our meal which is the traditional malaysian kuih (pastries made from mostly glutinous rice flour) and it’s all on the house. What’s not to love? I highly recommend everyone to come and give it a try as not only are u served with one of the best foods in town, but also get to meet new friends in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere the restaurant offers. Especially if u are a Malaysian and trying to find good Malaysian food in Germany , this is the only place in NRW where u can expect no disappointment. Lastly, I would really love to shout out to all the staffs that worked hard to provide us with such a wonderful evening, surrounded by good food and people. Keep up the good work and will for sure visit again soon.

This restaurant had been on our list for a long time, mainly due to the great reviews and the rarity of Malaysian cuisine in the area. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t quite live up to expectations, and we left feeling somewhat disappointed. We visited in May, and my boyfriend was especially looking forward to having Laksa. However, we were told it wasn’t available at the time and might return to the menu in winter. That was a bit of a letdown. Having visited Malaysia a few years ago, we came in with a sense of what to expect—bold, rich spices and vibrant flavors. The satay chicken was one of the better dishes: juicy and tender. The peanut sauce, however, was too sweet for my taste. I personally didn’t enjoy the Nasi Lemak—the rice was broken and too soft, and the sambal sauce was more salty than spicy, lacking the depth we were hoping for. The pineapple salad also fell flat, tasting mostly sour and quite plain. The beef rendang, typically known for its intense and complex spice profile, leaned heavily toward sweetness, which overwhelmed the other flavors. For the €20 price point, we expected more. My boyfriend had the fried mee noodles, which were decent—definitely better than my dish—but again, the flavor was mostly just soy sauce without much else going on. That said, food is subjective. While it wasn’t to our taste, we noticed other guests enjoying their meals, and the service was polite and welcoming. If you’re curious about Malaysian cuisine, it might still be worth a visit—you might find something you enjoy more than we did.

My visit to this restaurant was overall pleasant, especially in terms of cleanliness and atmosphere. The dining room is tidy and comfortable, although a decoration that more closely reflects Malaysia's cultural diversity would make the ambience appear more authentic. As far as the food is concerned, the rendang was unfortunately a bit too dry and too salty, which meant that the typical spices didn't really come into their own. As far as I know, rendang originally comes from Sumatra, Indonesia - and from my personal experience, the rendang there tastes more intensely spiced and has a more delicate consistency. Perhaps the preparation or the spice mixture could be adjusted a little to get closer to this character. Another point: whole fried peanuts were used in almost all dishes. These would be more effective as a fine garnish and would fit more harmoniously into the overall look of the dish. The “Teh Tarik” drink was a bit bland for my taste - the tea aroma was barely noticeable, and the sweetness from the condensed milk could have been a little stronger to achieve the typical balance of this drink. The mango salad combination with peanut sauce didn't entirely convince me either, as the fresh, sour taste of the mango was masked by the heavy, spicy peanut sauce. The tempeh pieces were also cut quite large, which made the consistency seem a bit unbalanced. I would like to positively emphasize the friendly and fast service. The staff was courteous and attentive, which made the entire experience much more pleasant. Another point I would like to note is the limited selection of drinks. There is no beer or wine selection, which would have been a nice addition for a restaurant of this type. I wonder if this may be due to the restaurant's "Halal" label, which is why alcoholic drinks are not offered. Unfortunately I don't know, but it would be interesting to find out. Despite these comments, I have to say that the presentation of the food was very attractive and the food looked really good visually. Please do not understand this feedback as negative criticism, but rather as a personal suggestion. I'm a little surprised by the number of five-star reviews - perhaps because everyone has their own expectations. I have been to Malaysia five times and have noticed that the cuisine there is much more oriental and spicier. These impressions naturally flow into my assessment. I hope that my feedback is seen as a constructive contribution to the further development of this restaurant, because the potential is definitely there.

Insider tip! Authentic Malaysian cuisine! Nasi lemak and papaya salad were incredibly tasty and just like in Malaysia. Not only did we taste incredibly good, the atmosphere and the staff were also incredibly great. We have discovered a gem and will be checking back regularly. We are already looking forward to the next time!

We tried this restaurant due to an upcoming trip to Malaysia to see if Malaysian food was for us. Not disappointed, we opted for the traditional Malaysian national dish and were not disappointed. Super delicious and fresh food, the owner is very nice and accommodating, happy to explain the food if you don't know what it's about and because it was my birthday, dessert was on the house. Thanks again, we'll be happy to come back after our Malaysia trip. :-) Little info: There is no alcohol.

I found out about Abang Toto’s Malaysian Deli through the cookbook. I have already been to Malaysia and really wanted to try this restaurant. The service was very good and incredibly friendly. The food was also fantastic and tasted excellent. The ambience was also very pleasant and the largest of the rooms was ideal for feeling comfortable. I'd love to come back.

A very interesting Malaysian restaurant offering authentic food. We had taken the Chef's menu and we loved everything which was served to us. The mango salad is a must try. The Rendang was cooked to perfection and also the chicken was melting in the mouth as well. The veggies were equally an highlight due to their taste. Not to mention the pandang sweet and the coconut salty & sweet thingy was amazing as well. We would love to visit once again and hope to special daily menus as well. That would be great addition to the existing menu. Thank you for the service and the wonderful experience.

A relaxed and welcoming restaurant where you can get delicious malay drinks and food. The dishes were well balanced, and we loved that vegan, vegetarian as well as meat dishes were available.

A quick culinary trip to Malaysia. This is the second time we have visited and we will continue to feast our way through the menu. Very great service where every dish is explained. Dishes taste freshly prepared and delicious.

A visit here is definitely worth it! The ambience isn't the nicest, but you get the feeling that the somewhat unsightly room was furnished with love. The service is very warm and attentive, but not intrusive. The food was super tasty, everything was fresh and of good quality. The portions are just right - you'll feel full but not completely overeaten and at reasonable prices. I'm just a little sad that I didn't have room for dessert :D We'll definitely be back!

Abang Toto's is a very nice restaurant. The service is really, really nice and helpful. Unfortunately I have to write something negative about the food. Unfortunately the chicken fillet was not cooked through. I asked to put it on the grill again. That was also done. However, the chicken fillet was undercooked and inedible. I don't understand how you can serve this up to guests like that. I was offered dessert as compensation. But I didn't want anything more because the chicken unfortunately disgusted me so much that I couldn't eat any more.

Authentic Malay food. Our Malaysian food has several shades for a dish. One dish can be cooked a few ways. The rendang for example can be cooked a Malay and also a nyonya style. As a Malaysian myself, I only cooked the rendang the nyonya way thanks to my husband’s heritage and so tasting an authentic Malay style rendang was as if I was transported back to my neighbor’s hari raya open house masakan. The Nasi goreng kampung was also very nice and gave the true “warung” style vibe- the ones you eat at the highway rehat place during a long outstation drive. It was very nice and nostalgic. The hospitality was outstanding and we would have loved to chat with the duo but they do get very busy and for very good reasons. The chef clearly is passionate about what he does and from the recipe book we skimmed through, it felt as if he journeyed through our land and the food landscape. Nice to see so much passion for our Malaysian food.

A very special restaurant! We found out about the restaurant by chance. A little pearl in the middle of Nippes. We had the Chefs Choice and it was outstanding. There is also great and courteous service. If you want to try something new, you should definitely stop by here.

Very good food! We were in Malaysia a few months ago and the food here was absolutely authentic, at least as good as in Malaysia and very tasty. There are enough vegetarian options, the staff is super friendly and the restaurant is nicely decorated. We would love to come back and can only recommend it :)

We've eaten at the deli several times now. And because I always liked it so much, I ordered catering from Abang Toto's for my birthday party. I can totally recommend it. Advice, delivery including dishes, the food itself and collection of the containers the next day. Everything was perfect! And I wasn't the only one who was extremely satisfied. My guests also raved about the food. Update February 2025 - The Chinese New Year Supper Club was a great experience. The soup with the homemade dumplings was particularly my favorite. Add to that the delicious wine and nice people at the table, what more could you want?

I've been wanting to try the deli for months, but yesterday I finally got around to it and we weren't disappointed. The reception and service were great, super friendly, warm and interested. Since we were a bit overwhelmed with the choice of dishes, we were helped very well. Ultimately we decided on the Chef’s Choice and were very happy with it. At Abang you can expect authentic cuisine, with flavor constellations that are foreign to the European palate, but at the same time very enriching. Minimal downer, there is no alcohol. We were looking forward to a local beer, the alternative was a non-alcoholic craft beer from Italy and in the end we were able to come to terms with that very well 😊 Thank you very much and see you soon!

Our culinary world tour stopped in Malaysia yesterday. The food was very good. The lack of real beer and the rather high prices cost the last star. But thank you for the authentic cuisine!

An incredibly warm and friendly owner who is happy to share his experiences. This also applied to the loving service. We felt incredibly comfortable. In addition (for me) exceptional and very, very tasty food, the Beef Redang Slider as a starter already enchanted me. It's worth trying out.

We had an appointment at the restaurant last week in a small group. The good reviews simply attracted us. Yes, what can I say. I ordered an appetizer (Beef Rendang Slider). The beef rendang was really very tasteful. Unfortunately, the onion and the bread roll were ice cold and therefore didn't taste that good in this combination for me. Whether that's how it's supposed to be, I know it is. For the main course I had number 9 (Ayam Percik). Great meat and first of all the peanut sauce. Top. The food arrived not hot, but very warm. Unfortunately, the guest room was not heated (we had a small oil radiator with us, which unfortunately had far too little power) and the temperature was well below 20 degrees. So the food got cold very quickly. I couldn't eat it so quickly so I could eat it while it was still warm. Really a shame. I didn't feel like having dessert anymore, simply because I was too cold! There were guests who kept their jackets on or put scarves on their legs. The entrance area has an electric sliding door facing the street. So when a new guest came in, all the cold from outside came into the small restaurant. A partition with a heavy cloth (as we know from other restaurants) would have worked wonders. The guest stonomist was friendly. I won't visit the restaurant again in winter, but summer is still coming.

Great authentic malaysian nasi lemak daging rendang. Wont have to travel so far anymore for malaysian food. Sambal isnt spicy but the rice, ikan bilis and rendang is all very good. Highly recommended!

We ordered the Chefs Choice, normal/non-veg. 65,8 € for the food displayed. 2 people. It was a pleasant experience and we had 1,5 hours of fun and free flow rice, this leads to quite a satisfying feeling. It is a bit pricy though, since the restuarant is a bit on the outer skirts of cologne... but you can not get Malaysian food elsewhere in our area... The service is very good and the flavour is top. Since I am german, I might not be the best judge... but having worked with Asian cooks and traveling to singapore and Asia, I found the dishes to be well made! Would go again!

Delicious food, nice owner, but he only speaks English. But we were very cold because the heating didn't keep up and we left quickly afterwards, so it just wasn't comfortable.

This was so nice!! Lots of vegetarian/vegan options, and so good to have a Malaysian place nearby. We got Nasi Lemak, pineapple and mango salad and Kuih Bakar as well as the trifle for dessert. Not super spicy by Malaysian standards (which I think is nice)! Very balanced taste/texture overall. Drinks options are nice too. I think the prices are very reasonable for the quality :-) we'll come back for teh/kopi tarik, jackfruit rendang and satay!!! Had a good chat with Todd about Malaysian restaurants here and in the US - they're not very easy to come by, so if you're nearby, definitely consider this one.

Glad to find authentic and nostalgic Malaysian flavours in Germany. Tried the Nasi Lemak Rendang with pineapple and cucumber side, Kuih Bakar, Kuih Talam and Kopi Tarik. They truly heeded my request for kurang manis and it was really not too sweet! Shoutout to the lovely warm service by Todd.

Comfy small restaurant, friendly service and of course good food! We tried teh tarik (creamy and not too sweet, you have to try!), nasi lemak (big portion with tasty rendang) and mamak noodle (malaysian style fried noodle with sweet hint). Everything was enjoyable👌🏼

Came here with high expectations and they didn‘t disappoint! We ordered the Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang and it was better than I had imagined. The rice was fragrant and the beef rendang was tender. The rendang spice was so accurate with the savory taste and unique texture of coconut. In contrary to another review I have read as I was scrolling here, as an Indonesia , I believe comparing Indonesian and Malaysian rendang is a totally pointless thing to do 🤪 Both are different and amazing in their own ways and the Malaysian rendang they serve here was *chef‘s kiss* 👍 Mee Goreng Mamak was tasty and had that ‚wok hei‘ that they promised. Served with lots of toppings. The Seasoning was on point and although it looked like it was doused in a bottle of soy sauce, let me convince you that it did not taste overwhelmingly sweet. A great mixture of sweetness, tanginess, and savory taste. I don‘h think I need to write another long paragraph for the Teh Tarik. The picture explained itself. It was creamy and sweet and had that unique Malaysian tea taste. They really took time to curate the ingredients down to their beverage selections 💯 Another bonus point for the cozy and chill atmosphere. Best to come with a reservation because they could also be crowded on a weekday. Left the restaurant with a happy belly. Would I come again if I‘m in Köln again? Definitely. Need to try their Kuih Talam next time.

This was our first time eating Malaysian food and we loved it! Had "Chef's Choice" with two exceptional dishes per course (starter, main course and dessert). You could actually taste the loving preparation, the service was very accommodating - all in all a great culinary experience.

I was here for the first time eating Malaysian with some friends. The Papaya Salad and the main dish with Jackfruit were very tasty and a bit spicy (should be indicated in the menu for people who cannot tolerate spicy food), nice alcohol free beer. The trifle dessert was something I never tried before and also nice. Definitely want to come back and try more. The Satay was sadly out and only one of us could try it. Only little point loss for the service, which was friendly but a bit slow.. esp as it got busier. Probably more staff is needed in peak times. Otherwise very nice and familiar little restaurant..

A nice, cozy restaurant with plenty of different food to choose from. A wide variety of starter + main course combinations can be assembled. Most meals are hearty and savoury, yet the salads and several side dishes offer a great balance. It speaks for itself that my friends, who have spent years abroad in the south eastern Asian regions, come back to Abang Toto‘s and suggested this to me. The owner is really friendly, speaks fluid English, loves to have a chat with customers and really engages with them. This and the combination of laid back music, great food and an atmosphere, that makes you forget for a an hour or two, you’re in Cologne really makes this place shine. Whatever you two do: please don’t change but develop further! Much love and I’m looking forward to visit again soon!

My husband and I went for dinner and it was a great experience. The food was delicious, with very authentic flavors. We had never tried anything like it. Excellent treatment from the moment we walked through the door and good prices. Highly recommended!!

We became aware of the restaurant through a newspaper article in Spiegel. And I have to say an absolute insider tip. The food is outstanding. You can immediately tell that they only cook with fresh, high-quality products without using any additives. The prices are more than fair for this quality! The hosts were terrific. You didn't feel like you were sitting in a restaurant at all, but rather like you were with friends in the living room. We will definitely add Abang Toto’s to our regular restaurant repertoire and come over for dinner regularly.

Abang Toto's is an absolute pearl in Weidenpesch!! The owner and service staff are absolutely warm and accommodating. The food is incredibly delicious. If you want to offer your taste buds something special, this is definitely the right place for you. And no matter whether you're a vegan, vegetarian or meat eater - there's something for everyone.

We drove past it many times and finally made it there. If you're looking for original Malaysian dishes, you've come to the right place. What doesn't exist here: The "one-European uniformity". Everything was super tasty and absolutely reasonable for the price.

We had a great team evening at Abang Toto‘s. The coordination with Todd (one of the owners) in advance was very friendly abd reliable. He is a good host who makes sure that his guests feel well looked after. Obe colleague doesn‘t like spicy food, so they cooked her a customised dish even though she said it wasn‘t necessary. The restaurant is clean and modern, the atmosphere is cozy. There is also a large selection of non-alcoholic drinks and the meat is halal. As a vegan, there is also a large selection. I am alread looking forward to the next time!

Food is just delicious. Very nice atmosphere, cosy and warm. And the host is really welcoming, interesting to speak to, and always invests time to speak with every guest.

The food was really tasty, especially Ayam Percik. Todd is the perfect kind of host that every restaurant should have in order to grow to a famous place.
