We had a very good evening buffet. Varied and delicious. 😋

We bought fish sandwiches at the snack bar. The service was super friendly. They were prepared with love and were absolutely delicious. We'll be back again soon.

Very good value for money. The fish—everything we've had so far—was delicious, seemed very fresh, and was perfectly cooked. The regional beer is definitely worth trying. The buffet is also excellent.

It used to be better. So we won't go there anymore.

After a walk along the harbor we decided to go to this place to have something to eat. Unfortunately our impression was extremely disappointing. At first no one paid any attention to us, we had to go to the waiters ourselves to order drinks. After some time we had to look for someone again to ask about the menu and order our food. The menu was brought to us but the waiter then disappeared for almost 30 minutes. When he finally returned he informed us that the kitchen was no longer taking orders. We ended up spending an hour trying to order something, constantly running after the staff, and ended up leaving hungry. And if that wasn't enough - the waiter even had the audacity to allude to a tip, despite his behavior and complete lack of service. This is simply outrageous. I am very disappointed with this service. I definitely won't come back and can't recommend this place to anyone.

There was already more choice. The buffet has shrunk very much when filled. Would we go there again? Let's see....

Went there for dinner today on May 3rd, 2025. The place was very busy and the order was taken quite quickly. We had decided on fish dishes from the menu, my wife wanted potato salad with the fish instead of boiled potatoes. After 35 minutes, a waiter came to our table and told us that the potato salad was no longer available. When I asked if they couldn't have told us earlier and if they could have pointed out the extended waiting time, this was the case snippy.When our food finally came it looked very inviting, unfortunately we discovered that the fish was lukewarm. If I had known that and wanted something cold, I would have ordered a herring roll. We were offered a drink as a good sign. Well, I know eels and crabs from times past when they were better.

Unfortunately, the food didn't taste good and the service was very inattentive.

The fish buffet is always a pleasure.

I waited an hour for my food. And the food was cold and way too dry. The prices are also way too high. Definitely won't come back.

We went there to eat at the lunch buffet at the beginning of the week. We were very enthusiastic about the selection of dishes. From cold dishes such as rollmops, salmon, various fish salads, two different soups, a large selection of warm fish, a salad buffet and at the end a dessert buffet. Everything your heart desires. And very, very tasty. The fish selection was very good. And everything was very nicely prepared. The eye eats too. And highly recommended for this price.

2 adults. 3 children, eating from the buffet is highly recommended. There is something for everyone here. We are in Varel every year and eat at Aal&Krabbe at least once. The price for the buffet is absolutely reasonable based on the selection and quality. The in-house beer is first-class, as are the in-house spirits (brands).

Unfortunately not prepared with love, portions far too large, no fresh produce, sauce for the fish far too thick, no real taste, unfortunately poor quality and it's probably more about quantity than quality. The table setting was also unhygienic, just cutlery on the table without a surface. Very unsavory.

Great food and always friendly service

A very nice bar/restaurant in the inland port of Varel on the North Sea that invites you to have a drink, a snack or a delicious meal at any time. It's also worth it, not least because of the home-brewed beer 🍺 but also the various brandies made in-house. So, off to the “fight”.

Although we were told on the phone that we could order a la carte, it was only possible to choose between menu or buffet food on site. Since we are rather average eaters (a lot of people), the €38 per person (buffet) was relatively a lot of money. The selection was very good, the quality was also good, but not outstanding. There was also something for vegetarians and meat eaters. The sanitary facilities were modern and clean. There is plenty of parking within walking distance along the street/port. But: The male staff in particular seemed very unfriendly and unmotivated and only communicated with us in one-word sentences, even though they were attentive.

We had lunch at Aal & Krabbe and were more than satisfied. You sit comfortably with a view of the harbor, the service was friendly and very good and the food was simply fantastic. Totally delicious, large portions and value for money is absolutely right. Thanks! We'll be back!

It used to be good, but somehow it has deteriorated a lot. Qualitatively uninteresting feeding with dried goods. At a buffet you simply can't keep the food fresh long enough for it to still taste good at the end. Last time we were standing in front of a closed door with no indication of any opening times on the website. Supposedly open according to website. So the journey was free.

Here you can have a daily buffet if you wish. There are different fish with different side dishes both warm and cold. If you prefer meat, you also have the option here. We enjoyed it very much and you can really fill yourself up. If you want, you can of course also eat a la carte. The restaurant is located directly on the small fishing harbor with a terrace right next to the boats, which also contributes to an idyllic atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive. Price-performance ratio is definitely right. Were completely satisfied. Definitely recommended.

Great fish buffet and very tasty home-brewed beer

Our family celebration - our son's wedding - was simply masterfully organized by the restaurant. Every moment of the evening was thought out down to the smallest detail and the team went to extraordinary lengths to ensure everything went perfectly. We would particularly like to highlight the first-class customer service: The employees were always friendly, extremely professional and fulfilled all of our wishes, often even before we could express them. We were deeply impressed by the high standards and warm atmosphere of this facility. Thank you for this wonderful evening, which we will remember fondly for a long time!

We eat in the restaurant very often and were always more than satisfied! Unfortunately I was there again on Wednesday March 26th and was greeted so rudely! Employees are busy with their cell phones and not with the guests! And when you went to the counter to order, you got cheeky answers! Unfortunately not at all professional that day!

A very great and extensive buffet is offered here. Whether fish or meat, everything is freshly prepared, plus a salad beforehand and of course dessert. Everything at a price where value for money is still right. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Large, long restaurant at the Varel harbor with a view of the sailing ships. The outdoor area is not yet open. Very crowded here today. But there is still a free place. You will be served quickly. That's a good thing. Large portions are served. The parking situation is tense. You can park along the long street and take a long walk.

Unfortunately, the food is of very average to poor quality. The buffet simply relies on mass processing. Sometimes less is more. The service is friendly and attentive. But you can tell that they are not specialists. However, the location at the Varel harbor is great. Always recommended for a drink.

Wir sind seit Jahren gerne hier und haben das Fischbüfett nebst weiteren Speisen (Fleisch, Salat, Gemüse, Dessert) gerne genossen – auch wenn nicht alles immer perfekt war. Mittlerweile sind wir aber zweimal extrem enttäuscht worden! Die Scholle war eine Katastrophe; sie roch verdorben und war obendrein nicht gar. Überhaupt ist der Fisch überwiegend schlecht gegart und durchweg völlig trocken. Das gilt leider immer auch für die Fleischspeisen. Vieles ist schlicht weg ungenießbar und erweckt den Eindruck des Aufwärmens vom Vortage. Geschmack ist etwas anderes. Die Fischsuppe ist eine Fertigbrühe ohne Einlage. Ja, man findet hier und da etwas, was gelungen ist, aber das ist eher die Ausnahme. Obendrein müssen am Ende des Tages Unmengen von Fleisch und Fisch entsorgt werden, da man wohl nicht in der Lage ist, die Speisen an die Gästezahl anzupassen. Dazu passt, dass schon wieder die Preise erhöht wurden, aber das Preis-/Leistungsniveau den realistischen Rahmen verlassen hat. Die Sauberkeit lässt auch zu wünschen übrig: Was auf dem Boden liegt oder neben dem Büfett, bleibt erst einmal dort. Sauberkeit und Freundlichkeit sind stark eingeschränkt. Die Bedienung wird von Aushilfskräften durchgeführt, lediglich ein/zwei Fachkräfte reißen sich die Beines aus, damit es einigermaßen läuft. Wir haben für viele Bekannte immer wieder eine Empfehlung ausgesprochen (da gute Lage, leckeres selbstgebrautes Bier, anständige à la carte Gerichte, bisher (!) gutes Büfett); aber das werden wir nicht mehr machen. Überhaupt ist der Kundenzulauf seit geraumer Zeit rückläufig. Und (Nachtigall, ich hör dir trapsen): Seit geraumer Zeit hat das ansonsten täglich hochfrequente Restaurant nur noch von Donnerstag bis Sonntag geöffnet; und das Büfett gibt es auch nur noch von Freitag bis Sonntag! Schade, aber vielleicht die Konsequenz für anhaltende Fehlwirtschaft. Wir haben erst einmal die Nase voll.

The restaurant is nicely done, the staff is friendly. We sat in a corner and were overlooked at first. My lemonade fillet was mediocre, the breading was barely crispy; the sweet potato fries were delicious (but you can hardly go wrong). We were also disappointed with the garnet platter, but later found out that there is no garnet available at the moment due to seasonal reasons. The redfish was ok.

Yesterday, February 23rd, 2025 at 3:30 p.m., we arrived with a hiking group of 16 people. A reservation was made a few days before. When we arrived we were sent to the back by the counter staff. Here a very unfriendly worker with a very unpleasant voice told us that our tables were still occupied, which led to a lack of understanding. When asked, only curt answers were given. The unfriendly employee then moved tables together with body language that seemed very strange to us as customers, especially since we were not the cause of this problem. Orders were then taken with snippy, unpleasant comments. Pieces of cake were also distributed, some of which looked very torn - and the extra item would have fit on a teaspoon. I have rarely experienced such an unfriendly service person. Further training on “dealing with customers in the catering industry” would be urgently needed here. So I can only give this rating. The food came quickly, but unfortunately it was appetizer-sized. Far too little. One type of fish tasted very much like eggs, probably from the breading. There were four of us and we were all disappointed. The beer is again very tasty and worth recommending.

You can eat great here, we love going out to eat at the buffet and there is more than just fish here, you can choose from, for example: also schnitzel or spare ribs. The staff here is also very nice. So I can only recommend eating here

Sehr geehrte Leserschaft, Wir aßen am Sonntag Mittag im Aal&Krabbe im Hafen von Varel - von der Karte nicht vom Buffet. Es traf das was auf der Karte stand. Geschmackvolle Essen, guter Service kurze Wartezeit und gute Atmosphäre mit super Ausblick auf den Hafen. Meine Empfehlung und das ist klar: Wir kommen wieder.

The food came very quickly and was obviously kept warm. The fish was mushy and had taken on the flavor of the egg breading. By the way, there was nothing about this on the menu, otherwise I would have ordered something else. Otherwise the menu was quite boring: fish fillet xy with fried potatoes and tartar sauce. You wouldn't pass up the tartar sauce in a factory canteen, and the food was also swimming in fat. If you write “fish restaurant” outside, you raise expectations that were not fulfilled here. At least the service was friendly. Still only one star from us because: In our experience, the eel and crab is only for the most basic requirements; the fish snack bar on the other side of the building is clearly the better culinary choice.

We went to Eel and Crab today at 4:00 p.m. As soon as we entered we noticed a very irritable atmosphere. The scrawny employee (shift manager?) was folding up several young employees. When we asked for a table to have coffee, we were given a curt answer: Yes, coffee, the cake is out. We ordered two lattes and a coke. They didn't come even after half an hour. In the meantime, the lanky employee had complaints discussions with several guests. His laconic answer: Always an email to the boss. After our orders didn't come after about 40 minutes, we left because you don't want to sit in such a toxic atmosphere. We had the impression that the schlack was under stress with the boss and wanted to take it out on the guests and harm the operator. There were few guests there and really no reason for stress. I would terminate the man immediately.

We had the breakfast buffet today. It was all really delicious. It was also positive that the staff kept clearing plates etc. from time to time. Lots of selection of rolls and bread, cold cuts, sausage/cheese, fish, scrambled eggs, muesli, vegetables and even desserts such as yoghurt, rice pudding and ice cream. The children were happy. Drinks were included. Either coffee at the table or make your own tea or water and juices. Everything really well done. The only small point of criticism: There are no signs anywhere about what exactly it is. Especially if you have allergies or intolerances, it would be important to know exactly what it says.

Wir hatten einen Tisch um 19.00 Uhr bestellt und haben uns für das Büffet entschieden. Die Bedienung war gezwungen freundlich, konnte die Frage nach einem alkolholfreien Sprizz Getränk nicht beantworten. Die Auswahl am Buffet war reichlich, kalt und warm. Die Soßen waren oberflächlich angetrocknet, der Fisch zum Teil noch roh von innen. Das Essen lieblos präsentiert. Viel panierter Fisch, lediglich Lachs gab es unpaniert. Um kurz vor 21.00 Uhr wurden wir gefragt, ob wir noch warmes Essen wollen, die Küche würde Feierabend machen wollen. Leider wurde auch das Nachtischbuffet, während wir noch in der Auswahl waren, vor unserer Nase abgeräumt. Das Ambiente ist ansprechend. Wir werden wahrscheinlich nicht wieder kommen.

It was extremely hot inside, it wasn't nice to sit anymore, you would have wanted to drink more and stay a little longer, but the heat was so strong that we sweated a lot, I was very sweaty, it just wasn't nice anymore, it was the last time I came to eat

We have been very satisfied customers of your restaurant at Varel Harbor for many years. For this reason, we also planned and reserved our Christmas dinner with you, originally with 4 adults and a baby. Full of joy, but unfortunately unable to attend due to illness, we made our way to you today (December 26th, 2024) from Bad Zwischenahn and Jever. We were allowed to take our seats - reserved for 11.30 a.m. - at 11.20 a.m. When we took our drink order, we were informed that we would receive information when the buffet opened. At 11:50 a.m. the time had come and we were able to help ourselves to the delicious, plentiful selection. First of all: Everything tasted excellent (as usual). Everything does not refer to what you announced on your notice, but to what was actually offered. The shrimp weren't available until about 12:20 p.m.; the steak only at 12.30 p.m. Unfortunately, the calamari and the pangasius fillet were not available at the buffet until you (involuntarily) left your restaurant. It's a shame, especially since my husband was really looking forward to the calamari. While my mother and I were eating dessert (this was at 1:05 p.m.), we were asked by a member of staff if she could clear away the other dishes and bring us the bill - the table would be needed soon. A few minutes later she brought us the bill. My mother asked if we could get another coffee. Her employee let us know that she hadn't booked it and that she didn't know exactly what time it would be, but in any case the table would be taken again from 1:30 p.m. - but she offered us that we could sit upstairs and have a coffee there drink. We politely declined the “offer” and drove home – still frustrated. Don't misunderstand us - we are aware that so-called "time slots" are used from time to time and that tables are only available for a limited time. However, we were not informed about the fact that we were only allowed to stay with you until 1.30 p.m. neither when booking nor in the confirmation email, so we were caught off guard when we "bang on the case" after a little over an hour had to leave your restaurant since the buffet opened and without the possibility of a second dessert, another drink and without any further nice conversation with our family. For the sake of completeness, I would like to point out that at least 10 tables in the restaurant were still unoccupied, which could have been given priority. We are very disappointed. In addition, it should be noted that we expressed our displeasure via email immediately (i.e. on December 26th, 2024), but have not received any response to this until today (February 2nd, 2025). We then contacted you again by email a week ago - asking for feedback - and again received no response. We would have liked to refrain from this review, but other guests should be warned about what they can expect (for a hefty price).

We had ordered a table for 12 p.m. via the website and actually wanted to eat at the fish buffet. Unfortunately we were then told that this would only be offered at 1 p.m. I was annoyed with myself for having overlooked that. But in retrospect, that's no surprise. The information is on the website under “Menu”. It would perhaps make more sense to place this under the “fish buffet” item. We then ordered according to the menu. Our dishes came to the table quickly. My fried eel was crispy on the outside and borderline cooked on the inside. A few more minutes in the pan would have done him some good. I love brataal, hadn't eaten it for a long time and was really happy to discover it on the menu. It didn't blow me away. According to my husband, the captain's plate was OK, but nothing more. Our two guests had ordered spare ribs. One plate came lukewarm, the other cold. We let him go back so the food could be warmed up again. The service was ok, not bad, but not particularly noteworthy either. I've heard a lot of negative things about this restaurant and I've always thought that some people always have something to complain about. But unfortunately people are right - quantity instead of quality.

We chose the fish buffet. There was plenty of food, but the quality of the food was poor to our liking. We are of the opinion that the food came from the caterer and was reheated (partly from the day before?), because some dishes, including the shrimp, were dried out and could not be peeled.

My husband and I spent the New Year in beautiful East Frisia and had reserved a New Year's Eve lunch at Eel and Krabbe. We were warmly welcomed and looked after. The food, Scholle Finkenwerder and Brauer Schnitzel, tasted excellent. The Tide beer, which comes from our own brewery, was also very tasty and highly recommended. Eines vorweg, hier kann man wirklich ganz klar eine Empfehlung aussprechen! Das Buffet war abwechslungsreich, schmackhaft und ließ wahrlich keine Wünsche offen, es gab verschiedene Fischvariationen mit diversen Beilagen sowohl warm wie auch kalt. Wer lieber Fleisch möchte bekommt auch hier eine vernünftige Auswahl geboten. Ein Kompliment auch an das Servicepersonal, alle waren freundlich und zuvorkommend, es wurde immer wieder nachgefüllt, sodass zu jederzeit alles verfügbar war. Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis im Übrigen war absolut fair. Aal & Krabbe kann man wärmstens empfehlen und es wird bestimmt auch nicht der letzte Besuch da gewesen sein!

One star is too many. At 6 p.m. the food, potatoes and fish were lukewarm. Fish had a rubbery shell. The entire meal was, in a word, inedible. Kitchen staff walked around the kitchen in bobble hats. Kitchen didn't look very inviting. Was able to take a look inside. We were there for the first and last time.

A very nice restaurant, but the food, at least the buffet, is not recommended at all. There were 4 people there and everyone was dissatisfied. The fish and meat were all dry.

Wir haben vor ca. 15 Jahren schon mal hier und ich muss sagen wir waren damals begeistert …..heute wollte ich die Begeisterung mit meiner Familie teilen aber es war Enttäuschung pur …Speisen kalt und teils trocken ,dicke geschmacklose Panade ….einfach schrecklich und dafür einfach überteuert ……für uns leider NIE wieder 👎

Went to the buffet in Varel again today after a long time. The food was excellent back then. Today I unfortunately have to say that things have slowed down a lot The freshly fried plaice was an imposition. Not a nice attractive buffet. Lots of convenience. The mustard in a bowl was completely dried on top. I told a service person. By the time we left, nothing had changed. Never go there again. Unfortunately.

Very disappointed last time. We were told that there was no hot food while everyone around us ate schnitzel, fries and fish, and instead of explaining it to us we were left alone and ignored.. Not so great.

The buffet in the Aal & Krabbe restaurant is an absolute highlight! The selection of dishes is great, even for those who don't like fish. Delicious sauces and side dishes.

Well, we took the buffet, which is very varied, but unfortunately a lot of fat and sauces like toppings directly on the dishes, e.g. Redfish fillet gratinated with cheese and 1 strip of pepper. The products looked a bit carelessly processed. Overall edible, but canteen-like. The young waitress was very attentive and good.

Very nice place to eat delicious fish. The buffet was very rich and tasty. The service was very friendly and always attentive. The view of the small, dreamy harbor is very beautiful. Certainly even more beautiful in the summer when the sun is shining.

It was fine and the buffet was great...just a lot more expensive than described on the website. Because of Christmas it was €38.90 per person instead of €23.90. Also for children. Drinks are extra, of course.

Unfortunately, the buffet didn't make any of us happy: the meat was cold, the venison goulash was tough, and all the fish creations were dry and lukewarm. The only things that were delicious were the pineapple, the ice cream and the hot cherries. ...and with so much New Year's Eve surcharge. Luckily the staff was very nice, but we won't be coming back anytime soon. Things had been much better in the past.

A very nice fish restaurant, with a great selection and an extensive buffet. The food was wonderful with a large selection at the buffet, the service was on point, we got a great seat at the window without a reservation and were warmly welcomed. Highly recommended.

We were here for a Christmas party with the company and it was incredibly tasty. I stuffed myself so full that I got a stomach ache 😂 The service did a fantastic job. When they realized we had a vegan with us, they prepared vegan options without us having to ask AND even brought something to our table even though we had buffet. It's actually rare to see something like that, so a big thank you!

We celebrated our wedding in the large hall in August and it was just PERFECT! We were allowed to decorate ourselves, we had enough space, the grill buffet was AMAZING. The salmon in particular was first class. I would have liked to eat more but then my wedding dress would have burst. Apart from that, the view at this location is simply unbeatable.

We were there for the first time today and I really have to make a clear recommendation, the buffet was an absolute pleasure. Versatile, tasty and really left nothing to be desired. Something was always being refilled and refilled. Compliments also go to the service staff, who had to rotate almost non-stop, but were still always friendly and helpful. We will definitely be visiting there more often. A very clear recommendation.

The buffet is offered until 3 p.m. and at 2:25 p.m. orders for the buffet will no longer be accepted because you cannot guarantee that more will be refilled. Just sad and ridiculous.

It was very annoying that we had booked a table for 5:30 p.m. and the buffet wasn't ready until 6:00 p.m.

A visit to the North Sea coast (Dangast) took us to the Varel harbor and the restaurant "Aal & Krabbe". In addition to a beautiful view of the harbor and courteous service, there was an excellent, rich lunch. We'll be back!

I spontaneously went to dinner alone on November 22nd, 2024. Parking situation is confusing, the signposted parking lot is closed with a barrier, you really have to look for public parking spaces and then walk. The majority of the tables are actually reserved. You either sit on the walkways or at standing tables. The selection is manageable, but okay, there is something for every taste. I chose plaice with fried potatoes, a classic at Aal & Krabbe. The young staff is completely overwhelmed by the task of running a traditional restaurant and cannot fulfill the role of a courteous host. The fried potatoes were cold, but the plaice was really very good. Unfortunately, no one comes by after the plate has been served and so you don't have a chance to notice the cold fried potatoes, which is a shame because this definitely doesn't live up to Aal & Kranbbe's standards. Drinks were okay, but there is no compensation for the cold fried potatoes. Basically, the price-performance ratio doesn't really match up here. Therefore, the risk of recurrence is rather low.

Wir sind unterwältigt! Ja, das Büffet ist sehr reichhaltig, aber Pfui. Gefühlt gibt es nichts, was nicht aus einem Eimer oder einer Tiefkühltruhe kommt, um dann in viel zu viel Fett aufgebacken zu werden und zum Trocknen auf diesem lieblosen Büffet zu landen. Mir ist schlecht, wenn ich an den Abend zurückdenke und jeder Euro war einer zu viel. Die Köche sind Hilfsarbeiter, die dann abwechselnd zum Rauchen vor dem Restaurant stehen. Dort kommt einem schon der erste Geruch von altem Fett entgegen. Das einzige Frische war der Eisbergsalat, der allerdings schon so braun war, dass er es nicht auf meinen Teller geschafft hat. Ein Büffet in der Form ist leider nicht mehr zeitgemäß.

Es war ein super tolles Frühstück Brunch mit allem was man sich vorstellen kann. Tolles Ambiente und sehr nettes Personal, jeder Zeit wieder.

Wow, that was a real highlight! We drove a long distance to do this, but it was totally worth it. The selection is gigantic and the food is incredibly delicious. A visit is an absolute must!

We booked the fish buffet and have to say that the price is absolutely top. If you like fish, this is the place for you. Definitely coming back

The captain's plate was floating in fryer fat, the boiled potatoes were rubbery on the outside and a tasteless mush from the glass on the inside. Even the crabs were subterranean and tasteless. All the food was completely convenience food, it doesn't even require a chef in the kitchen. It was just expensive and bad. Never again.
