Very tasty food, generous portions. Super Swabian! The diplomat dessert deserves special mention. A wonderfully balanced dessert wonder with three types of alcohol (egg liqueur, kirsch, and rum) and good gelatin. We'll all be back for this!

The worst experience in Germany! We ordered the dish of the day, which consisted of beef with vegetables and potatoes, and they brought us a plate with defrosted vegetables, some pieces of boiled potatoes, and underneath all of that, a couple of ridiculously small pieces of meat... Everything was covered in sauce and there was very little of it... Horrible! The amount was small and it tasted like nothing! On top of that, we were served by a very nervous and unpleasant man... I will never go back and I don't recommend it! Of course, the atmosphere and decor were great, but that's not enough to eat...

A building with an old wine cellar in the lower part that serves as a restaurant with a lot of atmosphere. The lentil and schnitzel stew I ate there was the best dish I ate during the trip. We arrived early in the evening without a reservation and were welcomed without a problem. Reasonable prices. There was a long table next to us where local Germans were celebrating and drinking.

A wonderfully old, rustic pub. It's rare to find one these days. All the tables were full on a Thursday lunchtime, which speaks volumes. The food was excellent, and the service was incredibly fast and friendly. For dessert, there was a little treat from the kitchen: yogurt with fruit. Brilliant!

The atmosphere and the service are really great, there's nothing to complain about but we didn't like the food. The cheese spaetzle were burnt and dry. The Maultaschen were so soft you couldn't eat them. The salad dressing tasted strange, so soapy... the service was very friendly and tried hard to make the evening and the food tasty, we got two new dishes this time, both cheese spaetzle. Also too dry even though the waiter said they make the cheese spaetzle without cream, I've had it like that in other restaurants and the cheese spaetzle weren't dry though. All in all I can't recommend the restaurant. It's a shame we were really looking forward to it as it was recommended to us.

This restaurant is highly recommended. The food is top-notch, as is the service. The ambiance is even better. The building was built in 1598 and renovated at the end of the 18th century. The vaulted cellar, where food and drinks can be enjoyed, is unbeatable. If you want to be pampered both culinary and visually, this is the place for you. And NO, I'm not an AI. I'm an enthusiastic guest.

Everything perfect. Came here with family inc 2 small kids. Service was really good and professional. They even prepared something “adapted” from the menu for our 5 year old son. We sat downstairs. Both waiters (younger lady and experienced man) were great. Worth a visit if you are in Esslingen.

From culinary fairytale to gastronomic nightmare We traveled all the way from Lake Constance, booked a hotel, and packed our anticipation. I once proposed to my wife in the Einhorn wine cellar. Back then: Magical. Today: Mighty disappointing. The seating – “Reserved is not always reserved.” We reserved a table in the “Backstube” (bakery) by phone. However, we ended up in the wine cellar – a kind of crypt with waitress service. Romantic? Only if you like plaster in soup. No joke: It's happily crumbling from the ceiling there. A quick swipe of the hand across the table and voila – a souvenir of sand and stones. Perhaps a new trend: a mouthfeel of a “medieval construction site.” The drinks – praise before it hurts The sparkling wine was cold, the pilsner in a stone mug – wonderful. Hopes rose… for exactly five minutes. The food – a culinary journey back in time in the wrong direction • Pancake soup: Okay. (The only bright spot on the plate.) • Mixed salad: "Mixed" is a bold word here. Green leaves, three spoonfuls of potato salad, a bit of vinegar. No cabbage, no tomatoes, no cucumbers – but at least completely absent. • Beef fillet with fried potatoes: Once a poem, now a bad joke. The fillet was fatty, small, and tasted like a cafeteria understaffed. The fried potatoes: once legendary, now rather tasteless, fried memories. • Rump steak: dry as the Sahara, tough as a political debate. After complaining about my fillet, I tried again. Same dish, smaller portion, same disappointment. One forkful of meat, two forksful of potatoes – that was it. Two full plates ended up in the trash. I paid around 30 euros for them. Goodwill? None. The Peak – Conversation with the Kitchen Oracle I followed the waiter, who had simply taken my second full plate away, to speak to the chef. Instead of a willingness to talk, I only heard: "Just throw it away." A confrontation nevertheless ensued – the tone? Arrogant, opinionated, insulting. I was indirectly portrayed as a liar. Discussion was pointless. There used to be more tinsel (and flavor) I've known the Einhorn since 2010. Back then, a certain Mr. Niedermayr was the chef – a master of his craft. His fried potatoes were, according to him, seasoned with ginger and were a dream. Today? The current chef says ginger has "never been used." Back then, we were personally invited to Christmas by the head chef. Today, only the unicorn we gave us as a gift in the display case recognizes us – glittering sadly among faded memories. The Crowning Touch We wanted to take a bottle of wine with us – a gift for friends. The cost in the restaurant: €22. Found at Rewe for €7.49. That, too, hurt. Just like the whole evening – financially, emotionally, in terms of memories. ⸻ Conclusion: What was once a culinary beacon is now just a dim basement light. For us, the unicorn is sadly dead. Romance: gone. Taste: vanished. Money: wasted. NOT a recommendation.

Wir sind extra vom Bodensee angereist, haben ein Hotel gebucht und unsere Vorfreude eingepackt. Denn im Weinkeller Einhorn hatte ich meiner Frau einst den Heiratsantrag gemacht. Damals: Magisch. Heute: Mächtig enttäuschend. Die Platzierung – “Reserviert ist nicht gleich reserviert” Per Telefon wurde ein Tisch in der „Backstube“ reserviert. Gelandet sind wir jedoch im Weinkeller – einer Art Gruft mit Bedienung. Romantisch? Nur, wenn man auf Putz in der Suppe steht. Kein Scherz: Der bröckelt dort fröhlich von der Decke. Einmal mit der Hand über den Tisch gestrichen und zack – ein Mitbringsel aus Sand und Steinen. Vielleicht ein neuer Trend: Mundgefühl „mittelalterliche Baustelle“. Die Getränke – Lob, bevor es weh tut Der Sekt war kalt, das Pils im Steinkrug – wunderbar. Die Hoffnung stieg… für genau fünf Minuten. Die Speisen – Eine kulinarische Zeitreise in die falsche Richtung • Flädlessuppe: In Ordnung. (Der einzige Lichtblick auf dem Teller.) • Gemischter Salat: „Gemischt“ ist hier mutig formuliert. Grünes Blattwerk, drei Löffel Kartoffelsalat, etwas Essig. Kein Kraut, keine Tomate, keine Gurke – aber immerhin voller Abwesenheit. • Rinderfilet mit Bratkartoffeln: Früher ein Gedicht, heute ein schlechter Witz. Das Filet war fettig, klein und geschmacklich auf dem Niveau einer Kantine mit Personalmangel. Die Bratkartoffeln: ehemals legendär, nun eher geschmacksneutral aufgebratene Erinnerungen. • Rumpsteak: Trocken wie die Sahara, zäh wie ein politisches Streitgespräch. Nach Reklamation meines Filets kam… ein zweiter Versuch. Gleiches Gericht, kleinere Portion, gleicher Reinfall. Eine Gabel Fleisch, zwei Gabeln Kartoffeln – das war’s. Bezahlt habe ich dafür rund 30 Euro. Kulanz? Fehlanzeige. Der Gipfel – Gespräch mit dem Küchenorakel Ich folgte dem Kellner unauffällig, um mit dem Koch zu sprechen. Statt Gesprächsbereitschaft hörte ich nur: „Schmeiß es einfach weg.“ Eine Konfrontation ergab sich dennoch – der Ton? Arrogant, rechthaberisch, beleidigend. Ich wurde indirekt als Lügner dargestellt. Diskussion zwecklos. Früher war mehr Lametta (und Geschmack) Ich kenne das Einhorn seit 2010. Damals kochte ein gewisser Herr Niedermayr – ein Meister seines Fachs. Seine Bratkartoffeln waren, laut ihm, mit Ingwer abgeschmeckt und ein Traum. Heute? Der aktuelle Koch meint, Ingwer sei „noch nie verwendet worden“. Wir wurden damals vom Chefkoch persönlich zu Weihnachten eingeladen. Heute erkennt uns nur noch das von uns verschenkte Einhorn in der Vitrine wieder – traurig glitzernd zwischen verblassten Erinnerungen. Die Krönung zum Schluss Eine Flasche Wein wollten wir noch mitnehmen – Geschenk für Freunde. Kostenpunkt im Restaurant: 22 €. Gefunden im Rewe für 7,49 €. Auch das hat wehgetan. So wie der ganze Abend – finanziell, emotional, erinnerungstechnisch. ⸻ Fazit: Was einst ein kulinarischer Leuchtturm war, ist heute nur noch ein schummeriges Kellerlicht. Für uns ist das Einhorn leider gestorben. Romantik: dahin. Geschmack: verschwunden. Geld: verpufft. KEINE Empfehlung.

A Heartbreaking Decline in a Once-Loved Restaurant We have always made it a tradition to visit this restaurant every time we’re in Esslingen. From our early dating days, to the unforgettable night when my husband proposed to me here — this place held a special spot in our hearts. Naturally, after just three weeks of being married, we chose to celebrate here again. Sadly, this visit was nothing like before. We were deeply disappointed by the quality of the food and the service. I ordered the Filet Steak, and my husband had the Rumpsteak. The potatoes — which we used to love — were no longer the same. The meat was dry, fatty, and far from what we had experienced in the past. My husband even attempted to speak to one of the cooks, hoping for some understanding or feedback exchange, but was met with arrogance and rudeness. It felt like criticism wasn’t welcome, even from loyal customers who know how good the food used to be. The ambiance, which once felt cozy, now felt cramped and poorly ventilated. I had to move my chair mid-meal just so another guest could leave their table — a small but telling sign of how tight and uncomfortable the space has become. Despite barely touching his meal, my husband paid for everything without a fuss. But we both agreed — this will likely be our last visit. It’s incredibly disappointing to say goodbye to a place we once cherished, but we can no longer recommend it to anyone.

Ich kann leider kein gutes Fazit ziehen nach unserem Erlebnis: Wir waren mit 20 Geschäftskollegen zum Abendessen da, hatten im Vorfeld einige Details per Mail geklärt, was sich als Zeitverschwendung herausgestellt hat, da man unsere Mails der Reservierung vor Ort nicht zuordnen konnte und die Bedienung nicht wusste, dass wir zum Beispiel diverse Gerichte zur Auswahl für unsere Gruppe vorab abgestimmt hatten - mit dem Ergebnis, dass ein vorher abgestimmtes Gericht gar nicht verfügbar war. Dummerweise hatten wir für unsere englischen Kollegen extra eine übersetzte Speisekarte mit dem abgestimmten Menü gedruckt - der lapidare Kommentar der Bedienung "englische Speisekarten haben wir auch" - das ist schön, die Person mit der wir gemailt hatten fand es allerdings eine gute Idee, dass wir die Speisekarten drucken und hätte vielleicht auch sicherstellen können, dass die abgestimmten Gerichte dann auch verfügbar sind. Hier scheint die Kommunikation untereinander nicht gut zu laufen. Okay, kein guter Start, kann ja mal passieren. Leider wurde es nicht besser: der gemischte Salat war so ziemlich der langweiligste, den ich je gegessen habe und ich verstehe nicht wie man einem simplen grünen Salat mit etwas Kartoffelsalat überhaupt den Namen "gemischter Salat" geben kann. Das habe ich so noch nie erlebt. Bei den Maultaschen hätte dann eigentlich Kartoffelsalat dabei sein sollen gemäß Beschreibung, der fehlte dann. Die anderen Hauptspeisen waren teilweise gut, teilweise nur durchschnittlich. Bei den Desserts wurden einige Teilnehmer zunächst vergessen und haben ihr Dessert erst mit fast 30min Verspätung erhalten. Der Knaller kam dann um kurz vor 22 Uhr (wir waren zu dem Zeitpunkt die letzten Gäste), als die Bedienung lautstark verkündete, dass jetzt die letzte Runde Getränke bestellt werden könne, danach seien keine Bestellungen mehr möglich - bei einer Öffnungszeit bis 23 Uhr wohlgemerkt! Ähm, echt jetzt? Das Personal hat dann mit seinen Aufräumaktivitäten im Hintergrund auch dafür gesorgt, dass es ungemütlich wurde und somit wurden wir sehr uncharmant zum Gehen bewegt. Ich hatte bis dahin nur Positives zum Einhorn gehört, aber für mich war es definitiv das erste und das letzte Mal dort. Schade um das schöne Lokal, denn das hat allen vom Ambiente sehr gut gefallen.

Esslingen has beautifully preserved townscapes. During World War II, the town seems to have escaped air raids, so you can enjoy the original townscape as it was built long ago. There are many delicious German restaurants in the town, but this restaurant is among the best. The exterior and interior of the building are still as they were at the time, so it exudes a traditional atmosphere and makes you feel like you've come to a truly German restaurant. The Zwiebel Rostbraten here is the best, so I order it quite often. There are many other delicious dishes as well, so you won't be disappointed. I sometimes come for lunch, but I think it's a good restaurant to relax and enjoy dinner.

Der Weinkeller Einhorn ist eine traditionelle Weinstube, in der wir regelmäßig einkehren. Man weiß was einem erwartet, keine Experimente, keine Sterne Küche, aber solide gute bürgerliche schwäbische Küche, zumindest war es bisher so. Entweder wir hatten jetzt zwei Mal hintereinander einen schlechten Tag des Kochs erwischt - was eigentlich nicht sein sollte - oder das Niveau ist tatsächlich deutlich geringer geworden. Das Fleisch - Hühnchen- und Pute , Putenschnitzel mit frischen Kräutern und gemischtem Salat, Hähnchenbrustfilet mit Ratatouille Gemüseragout und Zucchini- Kartoffelgratin war total trocken und nicht mehr lecker. Der gemischte Salat wurde in der Salatsosse ertränkt. Obwohl es um 13 Uhr - unserem letzten Besuch - nicht voll war, mußten wir relativ lange warten, wurden aber bereits beim Empfang darauf hingewiesen, dass das Lokal um 14 Uhr schließt. Man merkte der Bedienung an, dass nur darauf wartete, dass wir endlich fertig sind und man abschließen kann. Wir haben dann auch auf ein Dessert verzichtet. Wenn das Team des Einhorn nicht nur auf Touristen setzt., die sowieso nur einmal kommen, sollte sich die Qualität und die Freundlichkeit wieder deutlich nach oben entwickeln. Ansonsten werden die einen oder anderen Gäste aus Esslingen auf Dauer fernbleiben.

A wonderful old restaurant with lots of charm. The furniture is a bit dated but fits the ambiance perfectly. If you take your time, there's a lot to discover. I would recommend making a reservation. The food is Swabian cuisine with a wide selection, but the portions seem smaller than they are. At the end, there was a special greeting from the kitchen. Our waitress was super friendly and very motivated. Excellent value for money. Restrooms with changing facilities are available and very clean. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair-accessible entrance.

My partner and I were looking for a nice restaurant in Esslingen and stumbled upon this wonderful place by chance. Despite not having a reservation, we were able to get a seat. The restaurant has several rooms; we were invited into the wine cellar and were enchanted by the ambiance. We were able to take a quick look at the other rooms as we left, and they are also beautiful. The food selection is more typical Swabian fare, which is incredibly delicious, but the price is a bit on the high side. We didn't have to wait long for food or drinks; service was always relatively quick. We would visit the restaurant again anytime, but we would make a reservation in advance.

Unfortunately the restaurant couldn't convince us. Luckily we were able to get a place without a reservation. Service and ambience were also good. But that's about it for the positive, because unfortunately the food couldn't convince any of us. Spaetzle very bland (probably bought in, but it didn't feel like the "good ones"). Everyone's sauces were very thin, we all had to add more salt and the cheese spaetzle were burnt, so that one side of the pan was a burnt cheese mass and on the other side the spaetzle were just in oil. We won't come again because of the experience.

Anyone who likes Swabian cuisine will love Unicorn. From the "schlotzig" potato salad to the perfectly cooked onion roast, from the Vesper with Schmalztöpfle and various Maultaschen variants, you will find everything your heart desires. My personal highlight (and that divides people) is “Sour Nierle in Trollingersoßle with fried potatoes”. The chef competes with my grandma and the feeling of home that goes with it and it was exactly how it should taste. How lucky am I? Thanks for that. A great service team accompanies you throughout the evening and, despite the restaurant being full, is very attentive, always smiling and really nice and friendly. Cheers to a team like that. The ambience is the next highlight. Everything is lovingly rustic, little eye-catchers but not intrusive or overloaded. A real little journey through time. I completely understand why it makes sense to make a reservation and I went out there with my girls last night and we are already planning the next visit. All four of us women were very enthusiastic. All in all 6 out of 5 stars...

Since then I have been enthusiastic about this restaurant, have recommended it to everyone I know and have raved about it highly, even often organizing business lunches with important customers there. I've been eating there myself for almost a year now and I'm very disappointed, almost shocked, by it. Spaetzle has obviously been bought now (and not the good ones, unfortunately), as has the potato salad apparently. The roast roast sauce, which used to have a similar consistency and color to balsamic cream (fantastic!), is now more reminiscent of thickened meat broth. Very, very unfortunate! I used to love it here... Only the lady who served us could get any plus points because she was really very friendly, helpful and accommodating. I just hope we just had a bad day and the criticism is properly acknowledged and something is done about it. Maybe we'll try again later in the year and hopefully have better luck!

Nice restaurant, obviously located in the (wine) cellar. Located in the middle of the town, you need to park close by. Service is friendly, when entering the restaurant you will pass the kitchen ( and other dinner areas). The cellar is located in the back with a couple of stairs to take. The room has a nice touch but mainly made of stone. We had steak for dinner as this place is famous for it. This is recommended, as it was really good. I just had a beer but there is a large wine selection. Nice place to have dinner.

After several recommendations, we finally went to the Unicorn! The six of us had a wonderful table, even a table, in the basement, the wine cellar. This wonderful vaulted cellar is not only historically ancient, but also really authentically furnished. The classic Swabian dishes taste delicious and leave nothing to be desired! The portions are also quite generous, so you really get something for your money. The extensive wine list, which has many fine wines to offer, is worth noting. The dishes are presented by really nice waitresses Overall, you can have a very nice and, above all, delicious time here. Everything is harmonious and absolutely Swabian!

Large portions, onion roast very tasty but partially overdone. I would prefer a little too many roasted potatoes for my taste, a little less and then a small salad bouquet. There is still room for improvement in the Kaiserschmarrn. Otherwise we had a pleasant evening, the staff were very attentive and friendly.

Guten Tag, wir wollten eine Kleinigkeit trinken. Um 17.30Uhr keine warme Getränke mehr, also Aperol Spritz Mango- und einen Sarti Spritz (Agrumen). Sehr wenig Prosecco und der künstliche Sirup von Sarti….furchtbar. So ein schlechtes Getränk, mit einem chemischen Geschmack sowie die farbe, habe ich echt noch nie getrunken. Unsere Getränke wurden in 1 min. Vorbereitet, er hatte es eilig um 18Uhr zu schliessen. Außerdem Salz/Pfeffer vom Kaufland auf dem Tisch und ein wunderschönes Plastikblümchen 🙈 …. neeeee des net….Das Lokal hat echt ein riesiges potential, die Position ist TOP aber leider wenig interesse…….oder Ahnung? Nie wieder.

I highly recommend Weinkeller Einhorn, we liked everything. Large menu with German dishes, very nice service, food was served quickly, the atmosphere is beautiful. We chose ratatouille vegetables with zucchini, potato gratin and onion roast. The prices are acceptable.

We invited our parents. Unfortunately we were very disappointed with our food, the spaetzle were dried spaetzle from a bag. It's a shame for a Swabian restaurant. The sauce was a cream/flour mush. Price/performance really didn't fit. The tripe and roast beef were okay.

We were there with a group of 14 people. It was even possible to change reservations at short notice. The service was quick, friendly and always there. The food was excellent. All of this coupled with the location and the ambience simply results in a full score of 6 out of 5 stars! Thanks to the entire team from service to kitchen. We were all thrilled. Very cozy restaurant that we would also like to visit in the evening. It is very commendable that there was a lunch offer for under €10. Very nice, rustic wine bar with three individually designed guest rooms. The old wine cellar is definitely cozy, the ambience matches the traditional Swabian menu. The service was quick and the food came very quickly - we only sat for 15 minutes. There is also a selection of dishes for vegetarians and the option of having a vegetarian broth for the soups. Unfortunately, the taste of the Maultaschen and the dessert (apple cake) was not in proportion to the price quoted. In both dishes, old-tasting fat overshadowed the taste of the Maultaschen and apples. The wine, which cost €11.20 a glass, was also rather simple and the aromas described on the menu could hardly be tasted. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to give feedback either - the bill was put down without asking whether we liked it or liked it and we were allowed to leave the restaurant without saying goodbye. Maybe we had a bad day - all in all we had hoped for more. Maybe there will be a second chance to take a photo of the invoice date and the amount.

Beautiful rustic guest house. Service very friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately I can't agree with the reviews about the quality of the food. The ratio of side dishes to the actual dish is very much at the expense of the side dish. See pictures. From our point of view, the price-performance ratio is unfortunately not right. We are of the opinion that the potatoes as a side dish and in a salad do not come fresh but from a bucket or bag. Please evaluate for yourself whether the price-performance ratio is right. See pictures attached.

We celebrated a birthday with a company of 5 people. It was very, very difficult to book a table, although we wrote to them in advance. Everything is booked for the weekend, a month in advance. Therefore, they were forced to come on Thursday. By the way, they answer without any respect or interest in clients. No alternative dates are offered. This institution attracted interest because it is located in an old building, authentic and cozy from the outside. But this is probably the only charm of this establishment. The food was tasteless, oversalted ratatouille, almost raw "medium rare" steak. Also, the price is high for very small portions. The wine is good, tasty. Fortunately, it was impossible to spoil it, because the bottle was corked))) The waitress is all "in the soap" and does not have time to meet all the customers. The room is filled with so many tables that visitors are forced to rub off each other. Horror. Noisy, like a bazaar. It does not smell like comfort. We will never return and do not advise anyone. Disappointment and a waste of money.

We ate there with 4 people on October 26th. Waited 40 minutes for the food. And then 2 people got their food and the others were served a meat loaf that they had ordered garnet. The right place for lovers of upscale traditional cuisine and a wonderfully authentic ambience from the Middle Ages. Highly recommended and best with reservation. You can sit upstairs in one of the beautifully decorated rooms or downstairs in a historic vaulted cellar. There are no dedicated parking spaces, but you can find some in one of the surrounding parking garages. You can go in with children, but perhaps not with very small children.

You can have a good snack or a hearty lunch there. Anna's barnyard plate with cheese and vegetable pieces is almost legendary—I eat it every time I'm there. With guests from the Rüdern region, it's a lot of seeing and being seen.

We were a group of 11 people. We reserved a table four days in advance and shared our meal preferences. We received excellent service. The starter was beautifully garnished and served on three platters, allowing our guests to serve themselves comfortably. We ordered the main course à la carte. Again, the dishes were served simultaneously. Conclusion: Highly recommended restaurant. Very friendly staff, who frequently check in during the meal to ask questions. The quality of the food is excellent, plentiful, and fairly priced. Many thanks to the entire team. We would be happy to come back.

We found this place by accident while walking around Esslinger and it was amazing! Their Döner Kebap is as big as my face - lol. One of the best Döners we've ever had, fresh ingredients and very generous serving. Really good and service was amazing too. The dining area is clean and family friendly. Thank you.

Excellently prepared seafood. It was a surprise that even the cucumbers and tomatoes in the salad tasted like they came from grandma's greenhouse. The host is very hospitable and doesn't skimp on portion sizes =)
