We took a day trip to Altenberg today and had lunch at the "Altes Raupennest." We had a very, very delicious meal and friendly service. We will definitely be back. Highly recommended!

A hiking group over 80, after circling the three Galgenteiche ponds in the middle of the forest, found this gastronomic oasis at the foot of Kahleberg Mountain and enjoyed the triad of exceptionally tasty German cuisine, friendly and humorous service despite the restaurant being fully booked, and the Erzgebirge mountain hut ambiance. The "old" Radebergers of September 26th thank the Waldschänke team.

We really enjoyed eating here before our hike from Altenberg to Geising. It's really cozy, and the people are all very friendly. The chicken 🐔 schnitzel was very good and more than reasonably priced. Reservations can be quite advantageous, as it gets quite busy.🤟🤟🤗🤟🤟

Our group of 40 people made reservations in advance, what can I say: starters arrived exactly to the minute, as did the main courses. It really tasted great, everything! From cheese spaetzle to lumberjack steak. The dessert (apple crumble) was an absolute dream. The waitresses were super friendly and quick. It was a complete success. Thanks for that, we'll be back!

Of course it's a long way from Dahemme, but I'm almost through the memory card, it's a pleasure to stop there and I've always been satisfied!

Not signposted, so it's a real insider tip, almost no parking spaces or any indication of where you could park so that you can then visit the Waldschänke on foot. We'll probably tackle the whole thing again in the summer.

Today we went to the Old Caterpillar Nest after a wonderful winter hike. Luckily we had reserved because the “hut” was full. Despite the many guests, the restaurant team was friendly, organized and really looked after us. The food was really, really good and the price-performance ratio was good. Food was charred and inedible, service was pitiful, food that was not edible was still charged at a 20% discount. Overall, a disgrace. I left the restaurant feeling sick but feeling even more unsated.

Today we had lunch in the "Old Caterpillar Nest" for the first time after a winter hike. Fantastic location, rustic building, great, delicious food, good service, fair price/performance. Great food - super friendly service

The only problem is that a 5 star rating is the end of it. Dear readers, that's 10 stars per section through and through! This rustic atmosphere was visited by 6 of us. Due to the wet and cold weather, the guests were placed in an airy location. This was conveyed to us by the young, extremely self-confident waitress for her age. A motivated service that almost everyone of that age can learn a lesson from. The head of the house (was easy to recognize) had incredible organizational skills. This became clear when we ordered a table, as the telephone line fell victim to the weather. It was informed on all social media channels and then read and answered! Big praise for defying the circumstances like that. At our time there were around 40 guests in the restaurant. We ordered starters and main courses, with explanations of almost all the Erzgebirge and obviously Austrian dishes. The food arrived immediately after the ambience had taken effect and was extremely delicious!!! There's nothing to complain about either! This is not a fast food restaurant, no, the old caterpillar's nest is a rustic Erzgebirge pub in the hands of the "head waitress" and the "head chef" who are second to none. The bad thing is that all 4 peaks in and around Altenberg are like this and cannot be reached on foot in one day. 😊 The helpers from well-known companies in the region surprised me and give me hope. Those in their 20s have a motivation… Hats off to them! Please keep it up!!! PS: why don't I say anything about the price? A quaint excursion bar on the edge of Altenberg. There is hearty, very good home cooking at fair prices and a cozy atmosphere inside. We always like to come here for refreshments on our hikes. Unfortunately there is no card payment. Update: we were here for lunch today. We sat inside for the first time today in moderate weather. And it was enchanting. Quaint, cozy, warm...like a warm blanket of comfort thrown over you. The food was amazing. Kudos to the chef. The apple and berry crumble is highly recommended as dessert. A dream. We were there today for the holiday and were able to easily reserve a table a week in advance via WhatsApp. The rustic restaurant and the menu are based on Austria. The chef worked in Austria, which you can tell from the dishes and the very generous portions. The food was simply great, you can taste the love for food. Now it wasn't the first time we were up here today, at 826 m. Finally there was sun, no rain and no storm. But we wanted to hike in the snow again and stop here. About 6 people in front of us at the entrance. We checked the vaccination properly carried out. But then we had to be told that all the tables were occupied and most of them had reserved beforehand anyway. Just bad luck. Let's just continue our winter hike and come back later, or make a reservation in advance. So, I managed the increase, today on Thursday, this September 19th, 24th . It was almost fitting, at 🕚 o'clock, at the opening... So the only guest for now. I had the opportunity to quickly get to know all the members of this family business... Was warmly welcomed, and based on the premise that they would be seated, I got it Table 21 assigned. Nice table in the corner, with a lot of overview... Of course, I was immediately asked what I would choose. This question was asked by the extremely nice lady who calls herself Celine. Of course, I only found out about this after we started chatting, also that she was born in Hamburg and is the daughter-in-law here in the house... But before I reveal too much, I would like to summarize my impression that there is a family circle at work here that, with pride and dedication, tries the best for them Providing customers with the opportunity to preserve the tradition of the house with 🥰 love and warmth... We had reserved. Parking situation good. Map very extensive, lots of extra sheets, which makes it a bit confusing. Portions (e.g. mushrooms with dumplings) were HUGE for our standards - even the heavy eaters could hardly make it. There were smaller portions at the next table, which would definitely be something for next time. Service very careful. New young waiter (day 1) was assigned to us. Cat payment possible. A bit dark and very warm, understandable for a cabin in the forest. 15-25 € per person for main course and large drink.

My retreat on September 6th. 24 was a disaster, I ordered chicken breast fillet gratinated with tomatoes and mozzarella and wanted fried potatoes with it, the menu said cone croquette, so a side dish change according to the menu for 5.20 and a shandy, not only that the fried potatoes were soggy and the chicken breast fillet was very badly plated and cooked with too much heat and thus sizzled, the waitress also became rude when I spoke to her in passing; When I got the invoice the change in the supplement was charged at €3.00, so a total of €23.20. The waitress's argument was unobjective and unprofessional...I should go out to eat in Dresden because everything would be even more expensive. You couldn't say anything negative about the taste. I would like to add that the outside seating had the GDR charm of the 70s and was therefore very primitive.

Rustic, cozy restaurant with friendly staff, delicious food in more than sufficient portions, a well-stocked Gintonic menu. As an example, 4x food plus drinks 110€ so completely justified for the service and portion size. Gladly again when we are in Altenberg.

We went here for lunch with a group. The homemade iced teas are really delicious. The absolute recommendation is of course the Käsespätzle (you have to eat them once in your life) but everything else tastes excellent too. The service is great and the atmosphere is very rustic. Unfortunately, it is remote and not easy to find if you don't know.

After a long hike around Altenberg, we were happy to be welcomed here by such nice staff. Despite the inn being full (celebration), we were served quite quickly. The food was quite simple, but not quite ours. But you can argue about that. We from Upper Lusatia are spoiled in terms of quality. Nevertheless, our recommendation for this old one 🏠.
