Wagaya Bayreuth in Bayreuth

On August 22nd, I went to Wagaya with a friend, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. Things seemed chaotic right from the start: it took a very long time for our order to be taken, and we also had to wait an unusually long time for the food. The sushi itself even arrived before the drinks – which we found quite baffling. Our sushi platter was also missing wasabi. After asking twice, it was finally brought, but only when we were almost finished eating. Since I had deliberately ordered extra sushi to take the rest home, I asked the waiter to pack it all up. But we had to wait another 20-30 minutes without anything happening – we had already paid by then. Only after asking again were we told that someone would take care of it. After waiting even longer, we learned that the remaining sushi had been accidentally thrown away. They offered to remake it. I had ordered a colorful selection of many different rolls – including crunchy rolls, specialty rolls, and various standard rolls, each about half-used (see picture). In the end, I only received six simple, small mango rolls. No one asked what was originally on the platter; instead, they simply gave me the cheapest option. I found this really disappointing, especially after asking so many times. I've always been very satisfied with Wagaya and hesitated for a long time about whether to write a review. However, this incident is still bothering me and unfortunately tarnishing my memory of the visit. It's a shame the evening turned out this way, and it's currently preventing me from returning to the restaurant.

We were a group of five having lunch at Wagaya in Bayreuth. The restaurant is nicely decorated inside and has a pleasant atmosphere. Service was quick and friendly – our order and drinks arrived promptly. The ramen were delicious, the curry was an absolute treat, and the crunchy sushi rolls looked fantastic too. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality and flavour definitely make it worth it. Highly recommended for anyone looking for great Japanese food in Bayreuth!

Last Friday, my husband and I ordered three dishes from the menu—two rolls and one baked roll. We waited a total of about an hour because there were a lot of people there. On the way home, we realized our order was wrong—instead of one of the rolls, we got a tom yam soup. But we didn't want to go back and wait for our order again. The food was delicious, but unfortunately, the situation wasn't very pleasant.

The sushi and Crunchyroll were quite good, but the ramen was extremely bad, basically like a normal German noodle soup with spaghetti undercover. Overall, it felt like a Germanized "Asian" restaurant you would have gone to about 15 years ago. There are better restaurants in the city!

Service & Waiting Time Positive: There was no wait to be seated; we were greeted immediately and in a friendly manner. Minor criticism: We had to wait a bit longer for ordering and serving the food; a bit more speed would have been appreciated. Value for Money The prices are reasonable to high, but they match the quality of the food. Conclusion If you're looking for a good meal in Bayreuth, Wagya is definitely the place to go. Very tasty food, lovely ambiance – with a bit more speed in the service, it would be perfect.

Service was nice albeit illogical. Food first, then plates much later. Bottles first, then glasses later. Food preparation was quick, but tasted rather bland. Sushi was o.k. Ramen was disappointing. Decor and atmosphere were both cool.

My boys' favorite sushi place in Bayreuth. And mine too. A large selection of makis, shashimis, inside-outs, crunchy rolls, and so on... The combinations, so far, are very good. My tip: salmon, mango, and coriander. In addition to the sushi, there are also curries, dim sums, etc. My wife's favorite is the Thai red curry. I like the tonsu (basically a schnitzel 😉). The flavored water goes well with it, which means water with cucumber, mango, ginger, or lime—depending on your taste. Also: It's usually very quick, and the service is very friendly.

Not quite as good as in Hof; we felt like we waited forever for the drinks, but the food was quick.

The best sushi in all of Upper Franconia. I love eating at Wagaya. The selection of different sushi dishes is huge. We always order too much there, but still manage to devour everything. Especially if you order a lot, your sushi is brought to your table on special constructions. My favorite is the giant ship. I highly recommend it to all sushi lovers and those who want to become one.

Went here because of the high rating on Google maps and wasn’t disappointed given expectations. The sushi (nigiri) were giant, with 3x the rice as normal, so the balance was quite off. The salmon was of very good quality but sadly not the tuna maguro. I was pleasantly surprised that they had kanpyo maki though. That said, the main problem with the sushi rice was that it was just a giant lump of rice and not seasoned as it should (so it’s not quite Shari). We also had tori karaage (fried chicken) and dumplings. The karaage was fine, fried very well and not oily. The other more “innovative” rolls and sushi were, however, a disappointment. Overall, the salmon was great, the maki rolls and fried chicken were nice and the rest were not so good.

Large sushi selection. If you want a white wine, expect it to be almost unclarified. The service was not good during our visit.

The restaurant is very good, and the sushi is also delicious, but they don't always have tables available, even if you have a reservation. This week, we reserved a table for 7:00 p.m. When we arrived at the restaurant, there were three couples ahead of us who also had reservations, but all the tables were occupied, and we were told the next table would be available in about 40 minutes. I found that very irresponsible towards customers. The restaurant itself is good, but they're having trouble allocating tables.

The service and ambiance are excellent—the food is absolutely average. Nothing particularly recommendable, but nothing bad to report either.

Man kommt ins Restaurant, und auf einem Esstisch sitzt ein Hund von einem Familienmitglied des Personals. Auf Nachfrage beim Personal kam die Antwort „ist nicht so schlimm“… Sorry, geht irgendwie gar nicht.

Change requests were ignored despite confirmation (this is particularly annoying when you have allergies or are on a vegan diet), the food took a long time and was also expensive :/

Sorry, but where does it get 4.5 stars? It was a complete disaster. We had to wait 45 minutes for the appetizer. The main course came after 1.5 hours. The sushi rice was like "mush in the mouth." The ramen was made of spaghetti and noodle water instead of sauce. Service was abysmal. We were barely noticed. Our appetizer plates weren't even cleared away. It was also incredibly loud.

The young lady with black hair was a very nice waitress. I felt very comfortable with their food/drink intake. She was very accommodating and was able to answer all of my questions from memory as if she had studied the store! You rarely find such competent staff in resteraunts…

We ordered to be picked up. Of the 5 numbers, 2 were wrong. We also ate there. There was a screaming child next to us. Somehow I don't associate the restaurant with anything good. The food still tastes good.

I was passing through Bayreuth with my wife for a day. We ended up in Wagaya by chance. We had sushi, which was really well made and fresh. The service was very friendly and attentive, but not intrusive. We felt very comfortable.

Two weeks ago we had dinner at Wagaya. We had made a reservation for 9 people for a birthday, but then there were only 8 left. When we got there we were ignored at the entrance for 5 minutes. When a (totally overwhelmed) employee finally came, he first seated the large group that came AFTER US (!!!!). Since all the other seats were still occupied, we had to wait, which isn't a problem if it's only 5-10 minutes. But we had to wait 30 minutes for a table despite having a reservation. When we asked again about our table, the employee asked “are you seated yet?” (Huh? You should know that as an usher!?). Well, when we finally got a table we had to wait another 25 minutes for our drinks. When we bothered the waitress with the general problem of the evening, she said “it can't be helped, I'm just employed”. There were no apologies from anyone, except for a soft drink on the house. Food was good as always, but that didn't save it!

We ate there on Monday and you might think that the service hadn't been worked on yet. Something was constantly being mixed up or forgotten and no apology was given. The tray with drinks for the table next door was placed at ours without asking. Talking to guests helps a lot. Also not a fan of the glass panes between the “two” tables, you feel like you’re being watched by the people sitting on the other side and it makes it totally uncomfortable for both parties. The food is very tasty, you can't complain and the sushi is always beautifully prepared. But we couldn't really have a relaxing evening.

I have to say the food and service were wonderful as always. It tasted good, we were served quickly and the reservation was easy. However, what you have to pay now is beyond my comfort zone, even for sushi. For two people, just under €90 is a “slightly” higher price. We'd love to come back - but definitely not as often.

The signage at the entrance indicates that you should wait there until you are seated. Unfortunately no one came for a while, so we went to the employees. We looked for a place and unfortunately received no map, no hello, no service. The hand signal was noticed but unfortunately it didn't mean we could place an order. We weren't the only ones that day. Too bad.

Unfortunately, an online reservation via the website (as offered) was unfortunately not possible despite several attempts. Reservation by telephone at the desired time worked. Unfortunately long waiting times, understandable for food, unfortunately unacceptable for drinks (approx. 25 minutes for 4 normal drinks). There were also problems when ordering food using the “Schlemmerblock” that is known in our region. The Wagaya Bayreuth is listed here. When we ordered the food, however, we were told that it wasn't possible here as stated in the passport?! In the gourmet block it is clearly stated that 2 sushi variations are possible for the price of 1 (cheaper or of the same value for free). We were told on site that only one sushi roll was missing (variations = plural?!)?! Apparently you are being misled here... Or you have the feeling that what the waitress said on site couldn't be right. I would like to emphasize that for us as customers it was not about saving money, but about receiving good service and the promised benefits. Unfortunately, a repeat visit is unlikely.

Definitely pricey, but the food is oh so good. Not a regular place I go to but definitely something for a special occasion. It can get very crowded in the evenings and therefore a little loud. Be sure to make a reservation.

Good food, nice service - top Asian restaurant.

The udon noodles with tofu - Chef's Kiss! A dream, super delicious. Unfortunately, the service was underwhelming. That was really a shame. It took a long time for someone to come for the drinks, and the impression was of being annoyed and bored. Glasses were held with the hands at the top of the rim or pressed against the body in order to be able to carry more than two glasses. That's just unhygienic. That was really a shame because everything else was fine, the food was very tasty and beautifully presented.

The food was very tasty, but the service was very poor except for one employee. Unmotivated and unfortunately no knowledge of what number certain foods have. Not enough cutlery at the table. Food was there, but it took about 10 minutes until we got the cutlery. It's a shame because the food is very tasty and the service makes the recession worse for the guest.

I eat here regularly and am always very satisfied. Staff is always nice and friendly. Food is always delicious if you know what you like, of course. Ambiance is also very nice. Can only recommend the store!

As always, the food was great, the restaurant was nice and always well attended. For the sushi there is a 1 with a star. Service was ok, but had to ask twice for my second drink and to pay. (Guess I was forgotten in the stress?) but that was never the case on my other visits. Always wagaya

Food correct. We ate everything because we were very hungry after the trip. Low prices. We found a fishbone in the sushi! the ramen soup was with cauliflower, broccoli, beans and frozen carrots and hard duck. Udon and gyoza are good👌🏼

Food hasn't been available for so long. I don't think they had to catch the damn fish Drink way too small. And then still far too expensive.

Unfortunately we won't be going to Wagaya again, even though we have been guests there several times in the past. Unfortunately, the food was completely overpriced, the vegetables in the katsu were raw, just like in the ramen. After 45 minutes we received our starter. But what was the worst thing about it was that after 1.5 hours we were basically "kicked out" despite having a reservation because other guests were standing at the door waiting for a seat. However, at that point we had just eaten the main course, the drinks weren't even empty and perhaps one of us would have wanted to order a dessert...

Delicious and expensive sushi. It is better to take the order home as it is very difficult to get a table. Even though there are many free tables, the waiter says that there are no free seats. The waiter doesn't even ask how long you want to stay in the cafe. Maybe I want to drink coffee in 10 minutes? Nobody cares, they immediately say that there are no free places.

Great restaurant, we had the tuna steak, ramen and baked banana for dessert. Everything was very nice, fast, friendly service and a nice atmosphere. ♡

It's always been really good with you so far. However, it is somewhat counterproductive when you come into the restaurant and the first thing you see is a dog sitting on a guest table. And after a few minutes of waiting, it is completely on the table. OK, it was just a Chihuahua, but what's a dog doing on a table in a restaurant? Doesn't really have to be.

The food was perfect—the quality and the taste. The restaurant was very busy and noisy. At the beginning, we waited 10 minutes, even though we had a reservation.

Mega delicious food. 😋 Super nicely prepared. The waitresses were all friendly. It took a while to wait for drinks. Food came to the table in a good wait for it being fresh. Only the volume in the restaurant was sometimes loud. The toilets could also be checked from time to time. To restock products or carry out small cleanings.

There is the best sushi here and I haven't had anything better yet. The vegetarian selection is very good. The ambience is very nice with a mix of modern and Japanese elements. The waitresses are friendly but sometimes you have to wait a bit. In terms of price, I also think everything is very fair and fair. I can only warmly recommend the shop.

Had reserved a table, upon arrival I was told the table was unfortunately occupied, even though there was a reservation for a name. Absolutely impossible and dubious behavior. Was sent away despite reservation. Such behavior is intolerable. I will not visit this restaurant again......

The sushi was good and very large, the service was great. The topping was forgotten for sushi. But I only noticed it late and it was no problem at all to add it afterwards. The tables are very close together, but otherwise the ambience inside is very nice. There are also a lot of vegetarian and some vegan selections.

The best sushi in Bayreuth is here. We love coming there, the service has always been very friendly and quick, the food is phenomenal, the only (minor) point of criticism is the acoustics. When it's busy, it's just too loud. Still: Best sushi!!

The sushi is very tasty. Unfortunately, the place is a bit noisy, which is because it is usually very busy. The staff is very accommodating, but you may have to wait a while because everyone is busy. But the delicious, very elaborately prepared food is definitely worth it.

The food was phenomenal and tasted very good. We were really surprised by the good quality and the very good taste. The service was very nice, there is nothing to complain about. However, we were a bit forgotten in the crowd of guests, which is why I have to deduct a star for the service. The atmosphere is very nice and cozy, I think it's wonderful there. The only thing that shocked me was the price. It was really, really expensive. Even if you take into account the costs for the ambience, staff, food, etc., it is still overpriced. Maybe you can reduce the price a little for one or two things. Otherwise we really liked it and we would like to come back :)

I used to totally celebrate Wagaya. But it's wearing off more and more. The service: we waited 20 minutes to be able to place the drinks order. The store wasn't packed. The sushi came just as quickly as always. The food: the crunchy rolls used to be by far the best in the area. Still good now, but not quite as outstanding. The atmosphere when you sit at a table with only a plastic wall separating you from the strangers next to you... well, you can imagine it. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with Corona, the main thing is that the tables are close together and you can get as many people as possible into the small restaurant. So it's super loud. Unfortunately, prices have steadily risen with the success of the restaurant. Sure, everything has become more expensive. But I think the price increases in Wagaya are too high. Overall 3-4 stars, although I only give it three because I'm disappointed that they don't make the same effort as they did at the beginning when Wagaya was new in Bayreuth.

Unfortunately, the quality of the food has decreased despite rising prices. Some of the sushi falls apart and the taste is no longer as convincing as it used to be.

Eat: The starter (veggie dumplings) were okay. We had 2 different ramens and unfortunately neither were our cup of tea. Not very aromatic and the vegetables were rather unusual (e.g. peppers and zucchini). The homemade lemonade (lychee) was delicious, the tea (ginger orange) had hardly any taste. Service: It was fine. I liked that the order was repeated again to make sure everything was correct. Overall, there were always waiting times. Even though it was Wednesday there was a lot going on. Ambiance: It's very loud in the restaurant. There is hardly any equipment that absorbs sound, so you have to speak relatively loudly to be able to understand each other at the same table. Won't be our favorite Japanese restaurant in Bayreuth.

I really don't understand why this restaurant is so hyped. In my opinion, the sushi has no taste at all, neither the regular sushi nor the crispy rolls. The service is totally chaotic and you wait a long time for the food. After a certain amount of time you are basically asked to leave and within a few minutes the table is filled again, mass processing. The prices for the food are definitely too expensive! There is much better sushi at a better price in Bayreuth! After the second visit and another disappointment, I unfortunately won't come here anymore.

I studied in Bayreuth and used to be a regular Wagaya customer. After three years I came to visit and had dinner here again. The food was a disaster. I come from South Korea and have been to Japan several times. Sushi was mediocre, especially the ramen has really nothing to do with Japanese ramen. The broth, which is crucial for ramen, was certainly from a ready-made package, the noodles were in one chunk. You no longer have to describe vegetables. Absolute waste of money. I hate myself for giving a 2 euro tip out of Asian politeness 😓
