This is our favorite place with my father. The food is delicious, the Kölsch is the best, but the most important thing is the service from waiter Joe. You feel at home here—always warmly welcomed. Drinks arrive promptly, the food is prepared quickly and with love, and it tastes simply heavenly. A place you'll want to return to again and again. Thank you for this wonderful feeling of home, and a special thank you to Joe for the most cordial service!

Positive: The meat was of good quality and delicious. Negative: The bottle of rosé wine wasn't brought to the table chilled, and after a comment, a wine cooler with ice at the bottom and another glass of ice were brought to the glasses. The fries, in my opinion, are inedible. When they were being served, I already commented on the spots on the fries. A mixture of excessive salt and spices. Apparently, this wasn't taken seriously, and after the meal and tasting, the waiter asked if I wanted another portion. I politely declined, and they then gave me the opportunity to compensate in some way. However, the salesperson remained silent.

Drinks arrived very quickly. The meal (goulash & schnitzel) took 50 minutes to arrive despite the restaurant being quite quiet. A neighboring table received their food almost at the same time, even though they had ordered much later (similar dishes). The goulash arrived cold. The meat was correspondingly tough. The schnitzel was still hot. When it came to paying, we were practically ignored until we went to the counter ourselves, and were practically pressured to tip.

A very attentive waiter who loves his job. The food was good, and the location was top-notch.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it, as our waiter wasn't really in the mood, even though the temperature was pleasant and it wasn't exactly a blast at 6 p.m. The Kölsch glass wasn't full, the foam disappeared within five seconds, and it wasn't exactly cold enough to drink. The menu was sticky, torn apart, and promised more than what was actually served. The vegan Leberkäse was dry and almost burnt, the fried potatoes served with it were unseasoned as a precaution and only half-cooked, the vegetarian Schnitzel Bärbelchen could have used a bit of sauce to make it easier to digest, and the tagliatelle with mushrooms looked substantial. The rest of the portion was meant to be taken home, but apparently only half was packed, instead being filled into a dish with the salad. The crowning glory, however, was the authentic Wiener Schnitzel made from veal. If the knives are blunt, the meat should be tender. But it wasn't. It was neither tender, nor properly breaded, nor even flavorfully seasoned. I've made a firm decision: I won't be going there again. I feel sorry for the other waiter who was helping with serving. He seemed to enjoy his job, and it showed.

I stopped by this restaurant just for a couple of beers, but was completely shocked by the hygiene conditions. When I went to the toilet and was heading back to my table, I saw a giant rat crossing the room. I panicked, but the waiters just laughed like it was no big deal. At that point, I immediately stopped drinking my beer and water, and called the waitress to say I was leaving because of what had just happened. I also told her I didn’t think it was fair to pay for the last drinks. Then things somehow got even worse as she looked at me and said it was just a mouse, not a rat, and that this was totally normal in all restaurants in Cologne. I completely disagree. To top it off, her manager insisted we should pay the full bill. Only after a long back-and-forth did they agree to give us a 30% discount. Please don’t go to this restaurant. It’s disgusting, and they clearly have no respect for their customers.

I had a rat with my beer. No, really — an actual rat. My wife had just come back from the bathroom when a huge one strutted right past our table like it owned the place. She nearly froze mid-step. The staff? They laughed. Like this was totally normal. “Oh, yeah, Cologne is full of rats,” they said, as if we’d just spotted a pigeon, not a disease on legs. Look — I’m from a developing country, and even there, I’ve never seen a rat in a restaurant. Here? Apparently it’s part of the experience. If you enjoy casual vermin with your meal and staff who treat infestations like local folklore, this is your spot. Otherwise, run.

Really bad service. We booked at 8:30 pm and had almost no time to choose our food because the kitchen closes at 9:00 pm. Why accepting a booking at 8:30?? At the end of the dinner we couldn't use the toilet because it was CLEAN! Should we use it when it's dirty then??? No words.

Good, fast service, and above all, even as a vegan from Cologne, you can still enjoy a wide selection here. I was really happy!

The steak was very thick yet well-cooked. The fried eggs are a great way to fill yourself up, even if you eat a lot. Overall, a great way to enjoy simple cuisine at Altermarkt.

It was my first time eating there, and I have to say it was more than just an ordinary visit. The nice waiter was super friendly, accommodating, and more than welcoming. My schnitzel was really good, and cooked to perfection. The ambiance was just what you'd expect from Cologne: colorful, open, and beautiful.

Stephan is an amazingly friendly and nice waiter, the food is amazing and the atmosphere relaxed. We didn't wait more than 15 minutes for our meal, and the portions were huge (we had to wrap up half of our portions to go). I highly recommend this place and our host, Stephan.

The best local cuisine restaurant I've been to so far in Köln. Stefan is a wonderful host, very chatty. He will lift your spirits, take genuine interest in whatever you talk to him about and has the impeccable skill of making you feel welcome and comfortable. The food was exceptional and the portions are huge. I had slow cooked marinated beef with red cabbage that literally melted in my mouth. I packed half of the portion for take away. The prices are friendly relative to the portion size. The ambience is pleasant, the music is not too loud, melding with the sound of lively conversation of a pleasant and happy crowd.

Fabulous service here. Travelling as a solo female I was made to feel very welcome & was looked after by the fabulous 'Joe' I came here 3 times in my trip to Cologne, once for drinks & twice for food & drinks. The schnitzel we ordered was good, the bags of mayo were a letdown, the salad had a thick slimy dressing on it, the wine list of which you got a different wine that I ordered and was also nasty sweet, the entourage is very old dusty and yellowish, toilets (gentlemen) the ceiling is hanging loose and stinks. Service funny nice in dealing with, but when paying aggressive by asking for a tip, almost forceful (not given). This is not recommended!!

German food, like so many other restaurants here. Flavour wise a bit too simple, but the staff was very joyful.

Yesterday, we were there with six people. It's a very quaint little restaurant, but still very nice. A bit loud for me, but that's due to my health. The staff is very nice and friendly, and the food is also very good and plentiful. So, the value for money is more than reasonable. The waiter is also on the ball, and the glasses don't stay empty for long. We'd love to come back; this won't be our last visit here. We highly recommend it.

Very bad service. We had waited for our orders very long time. They did not bring the beer and asked for money at the end. A waitor tried to handle everything by himself with aggression. Never suggested.

The restrooms were dirty and run-down, the food was unfortunately soaked in grease and completely unappetizing. On top of that, the waitress forced us to buy a liter of beer instead of the 0.5 liter, which we then had to pay for in full. Very rude and poor quality, I can't recommend it to anyone. Regarding the NeoTaste, we were told we would have to redeem it at the end. The waitress never came to our table, so we had to go up to the front to pay. I wonder if she deliberately waited until the NeoTaste redemption time was over?

The Sauerbraten (tender meat that melts beautifully on the palate) comes to the table in very generous portions with real potato dumplings and delicious red cabbage. The goulash is also well-portioned and very tasty... A delicious Kölsch beer and a very friendly, quick waiter round off the absolutely positive overall experience. We'd be happy to go again! Highly recommended for Cologne residents and non-Cologne residents alike.

Small Cologne restaurant right on the Alter Markt. It's a shame that you can get a Bitburger with a non-alcoholic Ralder in a Cologne brewery. That's not "appropriate" in Cologne ;) Food was tasty and sufficient. The toilets could urgently use a renovation.

We ended up here spontaneously. The food was very tasty, I had heaven and earth and everything was perfect. The service was very friendly. Paired with a freshly tapped Kölsch, of course, so you can handle it.

The experience was so incredibly bad that it's hard to put into words. - brutal service, tried again and again to put on a smile, but the annoyance was really obvious. We have never been asked so vehemently to order, whether we were ready now and knew what we wanted. We could also observe this with the other guests. - When ordering, no one asked how I would like the steak. It arrived bloody. After I asked for it to be fried to medium rare, which the waitress did immediately, it came back as dry as the sole of a shoe. When I told the waitress, she cut the steak again at the table with my cutlery to prove that it was still a little pink inside... - On the steak menu we swapped the fries for mashed potatoes, which were inedible. For the life of me, I can't imagine that the puree wasn't at least diluted with ready-made powder (I asked specifically, she said it was freshly made). In any case, there was broth powder or vegetta in the puree, which was then completely inedible. It was also not mentioned that there was an additional charge for the replacement. - While we were waiting outside for our food, the waitress inside kept yelling at the bartender, so everyone had to hear the argument. - This was the only one of the several restaurants on the square that had its parasols completely covered in pigeon droppings. Conclusion: such experiences are the reason why as a guest you lose complete trust in the catering industry. This had little to do with Cologne hospitality. We regret every cent.

“Our” waitress Yonca was very friendly and in a good mood. She also asked us to move to a better place instead of right in the entrance area. The food was very tasty and plentiful. It's relatively loud in there.

The sauerbraten is simply great

Good food, zero customer focus! Kicked out after 1.5 hours. We were there on a Friday evening. With reservation. At the beginning everything was ok. Fast service, food good too. After 1.5 hours, we had eaten, ordered Lillet and had just ordered a round of drinks, when we were told: We now have to collect slowly, the next reservation is coming. We weren't aware that there were apparently time slots. We then asked again and were simply told: “It’s in the terms and conditions”. The answer itself was cheeky, you could put it another way. In the reservation confirmation, we hadn't seen it, but it said there was a time slot for 2 hours. Time slots are fine, but it would be nice to be able to use them. We would have also ordered more drinks. We wanted to stay seated at least until the end of the slot, until then the waitress said: You don't drink anymore, you don't eat anymore, you have to leave now. OUTRAGEOUS!!! After we had left around €150 together. And the slot hadn't expired yet. That's no way to keep customers. Even if the staff doesn't seem to care... still: that was the last time for us in the store.

First time coming to this place for lunch with friends, our waiter stefan was very unfriendly and rude, several times we tried to ask for food and drinks stefan seemed unwilling to serve us. The food was quite ordinary nothing special. stefan forced us to order food in an amount that we didn't need in the end stefan forced us to give him a tip, very unimpressive and bad reputation, as tourists we really don't recommend this place to visit let alone be served by stefan, I hope the management of this restaurant reads my review and makes changes for the progress of this place

There were four of us and we reserved in advance. The food was delicious and a positive thing is that there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Ketchup and mayo are available in a sachet and are charged an additional €0.60 in addition to the schnitzel and fries (without prior notice). After an hour and a half we were told that we had to leave soon and that we had to be settled. We were a bit surprised at first and asked ourselves whether there were time slots. That was also the case and two hours were booked in the reservation confirmation, which we overlooked. So now one and a half of the two hours had passed and we had just ordered the second round of drinks after dinner, but after all we still had half an hour left. 15 minutes later I was telling my friends something and the waiter intervened and commented with “Is this even that important?” while he was already starting to push the neighboring table together with ours. Another 5 minutes later another waitress came and told us in an extremely rude manner that we should really leave now. Absolutely disgraceful. It's okay that there are two-hour time slots and the fact that we didn't know that was our mistake. However, suggesting to you after an hour and a half (including 4 meals, 4 cocktails + another round of drinks) that you should leave now and literally throwing you out before the time is up is the last thing.

I'll tell you how it is - pick up a delicious meal here, enjoy the Kölsch, which comes more often than at some better-known breweries and also has friendlier staff.

The restaurant was very empty for a Saturday evening. No wonder, since even guests who just wanted a drink were sent away by the waitress. Unfortunately, we were served very listlessly and inattentively. The food was okay, but for the price, you wouldn't expect anything less. We sat at the front entrance, and the noise was so loud that it was almost impossible to have a relaxed conversation. One waiter was polishing cutlery and loudly dropping it back into the cutlery tray, and crates of drinks were being moved back and forth at the bar. Unfortunately, it wasn't a pleasant atmosphere for dinner. The waiters just wanted to finish work quickly, with no consideration for the guests. They charged extra for small packets of ketchup and mayo (without the waitress noticing this), and when paying, they brazenly demanded a tip (on the card reader). All in all, a disappointing experience. There are numerous other breweries in Cologne that offer a better experience.

The food was ok so far, the price was right. First we had a really excellent Köbes. Nice, funny, attentive and on the ball. Was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, when the shift changed, it was the complete opposite and we were gone quite quickly. It's a shame because it sticks in the end.

It was recommended to us, but unfortunately we had a bad evening. We were seated at the window next to the bar...actually nice, since it was only 8 p.m. and the shop was supposed to be open until 12. Unfortunately, the cutlery was being sorted all evening and the bar was already being prepared for the end of the day, which was extremely noisy so that it was hardly possible to have a conversation. This might not have been the case further back… Unfortunately, the waitress was also more busy with herself and acquaintances outside (no guests). Food was ok, but the Jägersose tasted more like it came out of a bag...when we asked for ketchup/mayo, it took forever, it was delivered incorrectly three times and then we charged something for a small bag without pointing it out. Several guests were turned away because they just wanted a drink. Waitress and bar wanted. Probably call it a day... It's all a bit of a shame, so we won't be coming back. The place actually looks nice, maybe it was just a bad evening with unmotivated staff, but we'll look for another brewery soon.

The food was delicious, but unfortunately we sat very cramped at a small table. Service was friendly but not very attentive. We would have drunk one more Kölsch if we had been served. When she brought the bill and “demanded” a 10% tip, it was clear to us that we wouldn’t be coming here a second time.

Yonca was our server and she was absolutely fantastic - her recommendations on the Schnitzel and beer were wonderful. Perfect for a day in Cologne. Would absolutely recommend this establishment for the food, beer and service. Thank you!

We had reservations for 15 people on Saturday evening, some wanted to eat and some didn't. That was a huge problem that 3 people didn't want to eat even though we had ordered one wreath after the other and it wasn't like we didn't make any sales. At the beginning we were told straight away that we only had 1 1/2 hours, that would be our time slot, so we ate quickly and at the end when the waitress noticed that we were still making a lot of sales, she said we could stay until the end after most of them had settled wolfed down the food. All in all just a strange service, you didn't feel welcome. In any case, we won't be coming back after 2 hours we made around 500 euros in sales and there was no sign of hospitality. A small table that no one needed was even taken away from us. Nobody sat at the table until the end, but we had to squeeze into the corners, simply because the waitress wanted it that way.
