Uninteresting local cuisine. We chose schnitzels, which are breaded meat patties: Meh. Be aware of the many extra charges: mayonnaise in a plastic packet for 60 cents, the same for ketchup. On some dishes, if you want a potato instead of fries, it's an extra €2.90. When the bill arrives, they ask you to approve a tip of 10, 15, or 20% of the total. When you're already spending €100 for two, it starts to add up. I don't know if all the restaurants in the area operate this way, but it definitely feels like a tourist trap.

The food was decent (we had the "Wurst platte," a bit pricey but good), but we were ripped off: the waitress pressured us into ordering dessert without giving us the menu, and she gave us a bill without any itemized charges, with a total much higher than what we ordered (8 to 10 euros more), also pressuring us to leave a 10% tip... We paid without really checking, and then when we came back to ask for the bill, she said she no longer had access to it... It smelled like a scam. A shame, because the restaurant seemed quite nice.

German food is all salty, so I just went to a random place. It was a bit pricey, but it was delicious, not too salty, and the Kölsch beer was delicious ㅠㅠㅠㅠ This was my first satisfying meal since coming to Germany. 🤗 I don't know if it'll be to my taste, but I recommend it to Koreans. ㅎㅎ

Coming from Australia, we were genuinely excited to eat here. The restaurant looked traditional and inviting, the menu offered plenty of choice, and it felt like exactly the kind of authentic local experience we were hoping for, two days out from Christmas. I’m a chef and a foodie who loves trying regional, traditional cuisine, and I make a real effort to learn about food culture wherever I travel. The Christmas markets outside were buzzing, spirits were high, and we came in as a family, my wife, our two daughters, and my mother-in-law, all very much looking forward to a warm, welcoming lunch. Unfortunately, from the outset, the service was deeply disappointing. As soon as we were greeted and the waitress realised we were English speaking her smile faded. She became abrupt, was disengaged, and interactions felt dismissive rather than professional. Plates were placed down abruptly, and when we asked simple, reasonable questions, such as whether butter was available or if we could order coffee, the responses were curt and sharp: “we don’t have butter” and “the machine is broken, we don’t have coffee,” with no apology or explanation. What made the experience particularly uncomfortable was the clear contrast in how we were treated compared to a German couple seated next to us. They were spoken to warmly, checked on regularly, and offered small courtesies such as a glass with their water, none of which were extended to us. When I ordered a strudel, I was questioned as to why I would have it as a main, accompanied by an eye roll. Any positives from the kitchen were completely overshadowed by the service. Quite frankly, it was the most blatant display of disdain from a member of the hospitality industry that I have ever experienced. To make matters worse, at the end of the meal we were directly asked to add a 10% tip while paying the bill. Given the level of service we received, this felt uncomfortable and unwarranted. Tips should reflect good service, not be expected regardless of how guests are treated. If it were there was a language barrier, I could understand, but the waitress spoke fluent English, and we tried to use as much German as we could muster to ensure we were polite. I’m leaving this review in the hope that management takes a serious look at service standards and staff training. With attentive, respectful, and consistent service for all guests, this restaurant could offer the kind of experience its appearance and menu promise. As it stands, the service completely undermined what should have been an enjoyable family meal.

We took a relaxing break on the lovely red bench out front. We were served quickly. The Kölsch was cold and delicious. The service was friendly and attentive.

We were there with a group of 11 people for our Christmas party. Positive: The food was very tasty, the portions were generous, and therefore the price-performance ratio was fair. The menu included some original vegetarian dishes. And the waitress was friendly, aside from the issues we raised. Negative: The service, bar, and kitchen were completely overwhelmed (for no apparent reason). During the first round of drinks, we were served a few Kölsch beers too few, and the person who pointed this out with "those who just ordered will get one first. Then I'll take your order again" was met with a curt response. We were seated at three tables that essentially formed one large table. However, they were "planning" table by table, meaning one table had finished their main course long before the rest had even received their appetizers. The appetizers eventually arrived, along with the first main courses. When we pointed out that we were still waiting for the goulash soup as a starter, the waitress snapped, "It'll take a while. I'm bringing it out as it is; there's no other way." When we expressed some incomprehension that the starter couldn't possibly come after the main course, she became quite spiteful: "Then I'll bring it back now, so it'll be cold." It wasn't cold later, but it was clear that the food had been kept warm or reheated. The goulash soup arrived (the bottom of several plates was covered in it, but no matter), but the bread was missing. It arrived after we asked twice, so late that the leftover soup we had saved for dipping was cold. In any case, they were just pre-baked rolls, which were still chilled inside. ... Three of the main courses were delivered incorrectly (this led to an annoyed expression on the waitress's face; whether it was directed at us or her colleagues in the kitchen, I don't know. At least she kept tapping away on her terminal as if she wanted to read us the opposite). Even after we had all finished eating and were practically the only customers in the restaurant, another order was entered but not delivered, and then entered again when we complained (I'd guess half a dozen Kölsch beers were listed twice on our bill). The question of whether we really wanted to bother ordering coffee and dessert in this chaos was moot – we were left alone for the rest of the evening anyway and ended up having dessert elsewhere. Even after we'd finished eating and were practically the only customers left in the restaurant, another order was entered but not delivered, and then entered it again when we complained (I'd guess half a dozen Kölsch beers were listed twice on our bill). It's a shame, because the food tasted really good and the waitress was otherwise friendly – ​​she could have simply smiled away the chaos in the bar and kitchen with a cool remark and some kind gesture, then half of our team wouldn't have gone home from the Christmas party saying "the place was awful".

Our visit to Tünnes und Schäl was fantastic overall. Although we didn't want to eat and initially couldn't get a table inside due to the large crowd, our waiter Luis found a great solution: He offered us drinks outside and even turned on the patio heater for us. We were well looked after throughout and were later able to move inside and continue our drinks there. A truly pleasant and service-oriented visit – many thanks to Luis and the team!

Unpolite staff! I checked the menu but didn’t find the coffee on it, so I asked for an american one and the lady wasn’t nice at all asking me what I meant as “american coffee” because she only serves “normal coffee”. Then I wasn’t allowed to drink from my personal bottle so I had to ask for a glass of water… Well that’s the final price for a coffee and a glass of water. I couldn’t see the price of both in the menu so it was a surprise!

The escalope was very oily and covered in soot from the fryer. Smoke from the fryer was rising from the entrance floor.

While looking for lunch and a Kölsch beer, we stumbled upon "Tünnes und Schäl" by chance. The service was very friendly and attentive. The server even took the time for a little chat. Very nice. The food was delicious and the portions were more than generous. Excellent value for money.

The food was very good in a lovely setting. Unfortunately, the service wasn't so great. Plates were cleared away even though we were far from finished eating. After 45 minutes, we were "politely" asked if we were finished, as they would otherwise give the table to someone else. We had reserved for two hours. Conclusion: Good fast food

A small, quaint pub, just like you'd imagine in Cologne. Cozy and totally authentic. The food and service are top-notch. "Himmel und Äd" is the best in all of Cologne for me. And I've tried many. 10/10 recommend !! The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were so kind. My friend ordered the Sauerbraten and I got some sort of breakfast schnitzel, I don’t exactly remember the name. We tried each other’s dishes, and we were both in love. Everything was so good and the food came out really quickly. My friend conveyed that I had a nut allergy to the staff, and he assured me that there were no nuts in the whole restaurant. As someone with life-threatening food-allergies who is often limited when it comes to dining out, this restaurant was a great find. Location : less than a 10 minute walk from the Cathedral and Central Station. Perfect spot! Beer : My friend and I ordered some “Kölsch”. Again, we don’t remember the name, but it was delicious.

The staff was mostly friendly, but I would immediately throw out the lady who stood behind the counter chewing gum with a decidedly long face; that sort of person is unsuitable for the restaurant industry!

The prices are just as high as everywhere else these days. But the portions here are absolutely huge! I can't imagine anyone not getting full here. We tried the Sauerbraten and were absolutely thrilled. It was so tender, you hardly needed a knife. Highly recommended! 👍👍👍

Best place on this old-town square in Cologne. We went with a Cologne native, who pronounced our table "the best in all of Cologne." Why? - because of the owner, who promised us a "stress-free zone," badly needed because we had been turned away from up the street, and because we had a mentally-diminished family member with us; because the table looked out on the square, but was quiet; because the food was echt kölsch and tasty (the chanterelles were particularly good and dense in the soup); the overall atmosphere, a charmingly antique narrow shop in the old town of Cologne. The tagliatelle with chanterelle mushrooms was abysmal. Absolutely no flavor, overcooked, saltless, a lump on the plate with a few tiny mushrooms... Absolutely terrible! We'll never be back.

It used to be one of our favorite places to eat when we took a trip to Cologne. The schnitzels were freshly pounded and prepared. The food was honest, down-to-earth, fresh. The waiters seemed friendly and enjoyed their work. Now, after a long time away, we were there on the weekend. The food and service were OK, but no reason to come specifically. The waiters did their job, but didn't seem particularly friendly or motivated. The two men behind the counter were more concerned with their phones than with the drinks. Only one older gentleman seemed motivated to do his job. Apparently, the owner has changed. What was once a pub with charm, heart, and, above all, quality has now become a restaurant like the ones you find on every corner in Cologne.

We then asked for the bill. Joe came right away to pay without giving us the bill. We paid, and then he carried the bill for another 10 minutes, pointedly ignoring my requests to bring me the check (the total was €61.20). We finally got it at 6:47 PM and hurried to leave this horrible place, forgetting the box (which we'd bought while strolling around Cologne) on the table. Joe returned three minutes later, saying he hadn't seen anything. We went inside, and the girl at the bar (she said it was her first day) spoke Russian. I started telling her everything that had happened (Joe kept shouting something at her in German), and I asked her to call the police. After that, our box was instantly found. What was that? What happened to that man? He treats everyone who doesn't speak German like that. He's a THIEF, he treats people from other countries badly, he's a bad worker, so the place was practically empty... I'm contacting the owner of the place - Stefan, please contact me and tell me what you've done about this. September 28 (6:00 PM) We're talking about a restaurant and a small gastronomic establishment in Kasachstan. Our customer is Joe. We want to know how local people feel about the "wedding" – we're going to ruin it and not even talk about it. Bereits bei der Auswahl aus der Speisekarte drängte uns der Kellner ständig und sagte: "Wenn Sie nicht innerhalb von fünf Minuten bestellen, müssen Sie gehen. Hier kann man nicht einfach nur sitzen." Danach wurde es noch schlimmer… Das Essen war einfach schrecklich. This weekend we had two wonderful evenings at Tűnnes und Schäl. On Friday evening, we enjoyed a delicious dinner with the hospitality of Joe, the man who brought us our food and drinks. Today we went back for after-dinner drinks at Joe's! We thoroughly enjoyed these few days in Cologne, and especially here. Hospitable, cozy, and above all, delicious. Extensive menu with a wide vegan selection. Unfortunately, all our dishes tasted like convenience foods. Service was quick and attentive, with a Cologne sense of humor. The ambiance inside was a bit dim and dingy, but there was a large, lovely outdoor seating area.

Old school restaurant/pub - Joe and Xanna were suberb hosts - very welcoming. Joe loves to interact with guests. He is very witty and now is able to say "Lubbly Jubbly" so all you Brits can expect that. The attention and service was second to none. Nothing was a problem. Unlike the whippersnappers at the adjacent restaurant he was able to serve three or four tables simultaneously and still have time for a little friendly banter. I just kept going back there over the four days I stayed. The food was tasty and plentiful. I thoroughly recommend this place.

Positive: The meat was of good quality and delicious. Negative: The bottle of rosé wine wasn't brought to the table chilled, and after a comment, a wine cooler with ice at the bottom and another glass of ice were brought to the glasses. The fries, in my opinion, are inedible. When they were being served, I already commented on the spots on the fries. A mixture of excessive salt and spices. Apparently, this wasn't taken seriously, and after the meal and tasting, the waiter asked if I wanted another portion. I politely declined, and they then gave me the opportunity to compensate in some way. However, the salesperson remained silent.

A neighboring table received their food almost at the same time, even though they had ordered much later (similar dishes). The goulash arrived cold. The meat was correspondingly tough. The schnitzel was still hot. When it came to paying, we were practically ignored until we went to the counter ourselves, and were practically pressured to tip.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it, as our waiter wasn't really in the mood, even though the temperature was pleasant and it wasn't exactly a blast at 6 p.m. The Kölsch glass wasn't full, the foam disappeared within five seconds, and it wasn't exactly cold enough to drink. The menu was sticky, torn apart, and promised more than what was actually served. The vegan Leberkäse was dry and almost burnt, the fried potatoes served with it were unseasoned as a precaution and only half-cooked, the vegetarian Schnitzel Bärbelchen could have used a bit of sauce to make it easier to digest, and the tagliatelle with mushrooms looked substantial. The rest of the portion was meant to be taken home, but apparently only half was packed, instead being filled into a dish with the salad. The crowning glory, however, was the authentic Wiener Schnitzel made from veal. If the knives are blunt, the meat should be tender. But it wasn't. It was neither tender, nor properly breaded, nor even flavorfully seasoned. I've made a firm decision: I won't be going there again. I feel sorry for the other waiter who was helping with serving. He seemed to enjoy his job, and it showed.

I stopped by this restaurant just for a couple of beers, but was completely shocked by the hygiene conditions. When I went to the toilet and was heading back to my table, I saw a giant rat crossing the room. I panicked, but the waiters just laughed like it was no big deal. At that point, I immediately stopped drinking my beer and water, and called the waitress to say I was leaving because of what had just happened. I also told her I didn’t think it was fair to pay for the last drinks. Then things somehow got even worse as she looked at me and said it was just a mouse, not a rat, and that this was totally normal in all restaurants in Cologne. I completely disagree. To top it off, her manager insisted we should pay the full bill. Only after a long back-and-forth did they agree to give us a 30% discount. Please don’t go to this restaurant. It’s disgusting, and they clearly have no respect for their customers.

I had a rat with my beer. No, really — an actual rat. My wife had just come back from the bathroom when a huge one strutted right past our table like it owned the place. She nearly froze mid-step. The staff? They laughed. Like this was totally normal. “Oh, yeah, Cologne is full of rats,” they said, as if we’d just spotted a pigeon, not a disease on legs. Look — I’m from a developing country, and even there, I’ve never seen a rat in a restaurant. Here? Apparently it’s part of the experience. If you enjoy casual vermin with your meal and staff who treat infestations like local folklore, this is your spot. Otherwise, run.

Really bad service. We booked at 8:30 pm and had almost no time to choose our food because the kitchen closes at 9:00 pm. Why accepting a booking at 8:30?? At the end of the dinner we couldn't use the toilet because it was CLEAN! Should we use it when it's dirty then??? No words.

The steak was very thick yet well-cooked. The fried eggs are a great way to fill yourself up, even if you eat a lot. Overall, a great way to enjoy simple cuisine at Altermarkt.

The best local cuisine restaurant I've been to so far in Köln. Stefan is a wonderful host, very chatty. He will lift your spirits, take genuine interest in whatever you talk to him about and has the impeccable skill of making you feel welcome and comfortable. The food was exceptional and the portions are huge. I had slow cooked marinated beef with red cabbage that literally melted in my mouth. I packed half of the portion for take away. The prices are friendly relative to the portion size. The ambience is pleasant, the music is not too loud, melding with the sound of lively conversation of a pleasant and happy crowd.

Stephan is an amazingly friendly and nice waiter, the food is amazing and the atmosphere relaxed. We didn't wait more than 15 minutes for our meal, and the portions were huge (we had to wrap up half of our portions to go). I highly recommend this place and our host, Stephan.

Travelling as a solo female I was made to feel very welcome & was looked after by the fabulous 'Joe' I came here 3 times in my trip to Cologne, once for drinks & twice for food & drinks. Stefan the waiter served us brilliantly!!!

Stefan, a great waiter from his hometown! The food was truly home-cooked, just like in the old days! A quaint taste of Cologne.

Friendly service that caters to children. Delicious food, some with large portions. All five dishes we tried were delicious. Non-alcoholic drinks are relatively expensive—that's just the big city price.

The schnitzel we ordered was good, the bags of mayo were a letdown, the salad had a thick slimy dressing on it, the wine list of which you got a different wine that I ordered and was also nasty sweet, the entourage is very old dusty and yellowish, toilets (gentlemen) the ceiling is hanging loose and stinks. Service funny nice in dealing with, but when paying aggressive by asking for a tip, almost forceful (not given). This is not recommended!!

German food, like so many other restaurants here. Flavour wise a bit too simple, but the staff was very joyful.

The food was average, but the service was very friendly and the seating was lovely at the Old Market.

Yesterday, we were there with six people. It's a very quaint little restaurant, but still very nice. A bit loud for me, but that's due to my health. The staff is very nice and friendly, and the food is also very good and plentiful. So, the value for money is more than reasonable. The waiter is also on the ball, and the glasses don't stay empty for long. We'd love to come back; this won't be our last visit here. We highly recommend it.

Very bad service. We had waited for our orders very long time. They did not bring the beer and asked for money at the end. A waitor tried to handle everything by himself with aggression. Never suggested.
