THE BERNSTEIN in Bielefeld

It's a matter of taste – there were three of us and unfortunately all three were disappointed. 😞😔😟

I went for coffee around 10 pm over the weekend. I had a hot chocolate, which was delicious and looked great. My friend had a cappuccino with oat milk. We paid €4.40 for that, plus €1 for the oat milk. The hot chocolate with frothed milk cost us €4.80. For €5.40, I expect a nicer cappuccino. It was only half full; a quarter was frothed milk, and another quarter was just air. For that price, I expected more, especially after the long queue at the bar.

A good breakfast buffet includes delicious rolls from a bakery, not pre-baked rolls from Aldi, Netto, or Lidl! A small glass of sparkling wine (0.1L) of orange juice? For that price?! Sorry, but that's ridiculous!

1000% better condition, beautiful view...everything OK.

The one star is for the staff; the goods were quite nice. The food took forever, wasn't even properly heated, was overpriced, and tasted only so-so. The cocktails were okay. All in all, the place doesn't deserve its reputation.

We had breakfast at Bernstein with two people on October 22, 2025. The service and location were very good, as always, but the (baked) rolls were at best gas station quality. Unfortunately, reservation requests aren't properly accommodated. So far, we've always been very satisfied with the Bernstein, perhaps today was an outlier. We'll take a break for now.

A beautiful terrace with a stunning view! I really liked this cafe—the view is a huge plus! The terrace offers a truly incredible panorama of the old city, especially on a sunny day. I had coffee twice—it was quite ordinary, nothing special. The burgers were also very standard, nothing special, but satisfying enough 🙂. But the atmosphere is pleasant, the service is always smiling, and the view makes you want to come back again. A great place to just sit, relax, and enjoy the moment. 🌤️🍷

We went to Bernstein for breakfast with a large group on a Friday and were very disappointed! For the price of almost €18, we expected a better breakfast buffet. Comparing this buffet with Aleks or Extrablatt, there are huge differences. To start with, the food is served in outdated, worn-out serving containers. My girlfriend wanted salmon from a container. She lifted the lid, and the whole lid fell off. The dessert selection is very limited. There's only pudding, jelly, or fruit. No cake, no pastries, no tiramisu. The buffet selection wasn't that great either. The worst part was the narrow aisle. You could only go in one direction. If you forgot something, you couldn't go back because the aisle was so narrow and you couldn't get past the people. You had to walk all the way around the counter with your plate to get back to your table. The entire floor was sticky. Someone had probably dropped something sticky. Even though we pointed it out to the staff, nothing was done. They simply ignored the warning. Even for breakfast you only got a sparkling glass of orange juice from a tetra pack. With the extra leaf you at least get a small Granini bottle of orange juice. Many of the signs were placed incorrectly on the buffet. Where maple syrup for the pancakes should have been, there was jam. With the jam you could only guess what kind it might be, as there was no sign at all. There were no nuts or toppings for the muesli either. There was also no lactose-free milk or almond milk. The reception stand at the exit had not been removed to make it easier to leave. You had to squeeze to the side. Simply disappointing. We definitely won't be coming back.

We ate there on a Tuesday afternoon and got a lovely spot on the rooftop terrace. The service was polite and quick. Around 5:30 p.m., it started to get a bit busier, so I would recommend reserving a table in the evening.

Located on the fifth floor, you can see the city from above. The place is well-kept and clean, with a wide selection.

The atmosphere was pleasant, and the service was friendly and attentive. A great start to the day – we'd love to come back!

Great restaurant, unfortunately, the food (pasta) was very, very salty. When I asked the waitress about it, she explained that I should have stirred the food first so that the salt flakes could be distributed. However, the pasta itself was simply too salty. They did offer a replacement portion for some, but it was still barely edible.

Beautiful view, nice terrace. Friendly staff who are unprofessional in their comments about other guests. High prices; you pay for the view. Spaghetti with salmon, a good portion, but unfortunately very bland in taste. Shrimp are very poor value for money. There's still room for improvement. Unfortunately, it's more show than substance.

The waiter's name, Cesear, is unbelievable. We called him because we wanted to order three sugar cubes and a bottle of water for my child. He came to us aggressively and asked us why we called him, and he wanted to make it clear to us that this is not his area. And he came so close to me that we wanted to fight, with my child and my wife pregnant!!! Not again at Bernstein.

The waiter's name is incredibly aggressive and unfriendly, he's not at work, he's just looking for stress! Never again!

The food in the restaurant area has now reached a very good level and is recommended. The view is still unique in Bielefeld.

A beautiful view is a real plus for this place. Even in the evening, when everything is lit up... Otherwise, the interior is quite cramped, and you couldn't sit wherever you wanted, as some of the tables were partitioned off. Luckily, there were only two of us, so it was fine to sit at a small table. Coffee and other drinks were fine. In the summer, it's also fun to sit outside.

Great location, good food. Rude and inattentive service. We weren't asked for an espresso or dessert, and the bill took 15 minutes. The restaurant is at 20% capacity; I don't want to know what it's like to be in a mess here at 100% capacity.

A car repair actually brought us to Bielefeld. Not usually a particularly pleasant experience. At "THE BERNSTEIN," not only was the food delicious, but the view over the city was also a real treat. Not to mention the excellent service in the restaurant (and at the auto repair shop). What more could you want? Let someone say something against Bielefeld. We really loved it there!

Nice café, but sometimes the waiters don't come to the table to take our order, even though we've seen them several times. There was plenty of staff on hand late in the evening. Only when we were greeted and when we left did we receive any attention without having ordered anything. It's not always the case, but it's still annoying.

We had ordered sparkling wine, coffee, and cake for a civil wedding in the afternoon. Nothing was prepared, and it took a long time for the ordered items to arrive. The cake we ordered was placed uncut, without a cake pusher, and without any staff. A real disgrace!!! and a huge disappointment overall! The bill, however, was quite steep.

We like to go there for breakfast, even though the buffet is quite expensive (€17.90 for adults, children up to 12 pay €1 per year). Nice atmosphere, super-friendly staff, and a good selection.

One of the coolest spots to visit in Bielefeld! It has a spacious patio where you can sit back and enjoy a nice view of the town. Their currywurst is among the tastiest we’ve had in Germany. We also tried the Alster and Herforder Pils — both excellent choices. Highly recommended!

We were here for a family dinner with eight people. The atmosphere was great and the view was fantastic. The food was good, but the portions were rather large. The service was okay, but we often had to wait a bit or search for someone. It's a big plus that they're open for lunch on Saturdays. That's rare these days.

Today my wife came here for dinner with her son and his girlfriend. The view and location were great... BUT the price-performance ratio is not right at all!!!!! The food was not only cold but also the portions were very small for the price. As we didn't want to cause a scene, since it was an invitation, we ignored the dismissive attitude... no new (warm noodles) were brought... in other words, we hadn't ordered pasta salad! We had to pay for everything because 3 noodles were missing. It's disgraceful to be served like this as a guest... Conclusion - we're served... can only advise against visiting here. Anyone who treats their guests like this will probably be bankrupt soon... hopefully. P.S. What is striking is that the restaurant has not responded to a single review, neither the positive nor the negative ones! That seems very arrogant to me! You can also get the impression that management is not at all interested in what guests write...maybe that should be changed!!!!!

I met up with a friend at Bernstein again this morning. The food and drinks were delicious as usual, and the service was very friendly. Two downsides to the ambiance: Without a reservation, you're relegated to the front seating area, where there are only very uncomfortable, school-style wooden chairs, in contrast to the comfortable upholstered armchairs in the back. Secondly, the restrooms are only accessible via a long flight of stairs (I always wonder how someone with mobility issues can go to the bathroom in this place?), and the women's restrooms aren't exactly clean. I know it's the customers' fault, but there was toilet paper on the floor and dirty toilets everywhere. Even at the top of the stairs, you're greeted by a typical toilet smell; there's no way I'd ever want to have a cocktail at the bar in that corner of the stairs.

Overall, it's quite expensive, and the food is rather average. But I'd go back again.

I only visit this restaurant for special occasions, especially when I want to entertain important guests, as I have always been impressed by the quality and atmosphere. This makes my last visit all the more regrettable. Although we were appropriately dressed and polite, we were given the wrong order. Out of consideration for the server and to avoid creating an unpleasant situation, I deliberately chose not to respond. What irritated and disappointed me, however, was that while all the surrounding tables were repeatedly approached in a friendly manner, asking if everything was okay and whether the food tasted good, we were completely ignored. Even when leaving, we were not asked how satisfied we were, as is usually the case. The entire interaction seemed distant, almost condescending, which, considering my guest, was not only unpleasant but downright embarrassing. Especially at a restaurant I previously considered trustworthy, I would have expected more sensitivity. I sincerely hope that this was an unfortunate isolated incident and not a negligent slippage in service, especially towards guests who treat the establishment with respect and loyalty. 🌹

Disappointing and not hospitable – unfortunately never again We wanted to visit Bernstein one evening around 10:50 p.m. – according to the official opening hours, the café/bar/restaurant is open until midnight. We were politely but firmly turned away: They had "already rung the last round at the few tables" and therefore couldn't let us in. Despite the confirmed opening time, we were refused entry 70 minutes before closing time – without any real explanation or consideration. For a restaurant that presents itself as urban, hospitable, and modern, this is an absolute no-go. Anyone who turns away guests because the staff obviously wants to finish work early should communicate their opening hours honestly – or, more consistently, close immediately if they don't want to serve any more guests. We left disappointed and angry. What a shame, because we were looking forward to a lovely evening at Bernstein. You don't leave a good impression that way. For us, it was the last time.

So, sure, the location is cool. The food leaves plenty of room for improvement. The burgers aren't good value, lack flavor, and are too expensive for what you get. Above all, no requests are accommodated. I like my meat medium, the chef told me when I asked. "We don't do special cuts here." Good thing I didn't order a steak. Is that even cooked well? So, a clear deduction for the service here. More than two well-intentioned stars isn't possible.

This restaurant has a beautifully situated rooftop terrace with a magnificent view over Bielefeld. They offer a lunch menu with a significantly reduced price. We had three different dishes, all of which were very good and the portions were generous. We were lucky to be there in bright sunshine, so we only came for breakfast, but we stayed until lunch. The ambiance is modern. The service was very friendly and attentive. The restrooms were clean. It's definitely worth a visit.

The location of the Bernstein is truly fantastic – with a fantastic view of the city, it's a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the view. The ambiance is just right and makes the visit very pleasant. Unfortunately, the food isn't convincing for me. It's simply too expensive and doesn't offer anything special that would justify the price. That's a shame, because I usually enjoy coming here. Next time, I might just skip the food and treat myself to a lemonade to continue enjoying the view without putting too much strain on my wallet.

On a recommendation, I went to Bernstein with my girlfriend for Sunday brunch. The atmosphere is nice and the staff is friendly, but the first dishes were already gone an hour and a half before closing time and weren't refilled. That's a real shame, and not really worth the price either.

Let's not get carried away; here you do pay for the ambiance/location, but is that a bad thing? As a larger group, we received friendly service, and the food came out quickly. Yes, the prices are higher because of the view, but the view is really beautiful. A large outdoor terrace overlooking the rooftops of Bielefeld. I deliberately ordered something from the daily specials, but otherwise there are the usual classics (burgers, pasta, salad, etc.). My portion tasted good, but not outstanding. The quantity was okay, although perhaps a little too small for one or two people. I always like the regional beer (Leineweber Kellerbier, which is more of an intense pale ale). I finished off with two cocktails: a whiskey sour and a Mai Tai, which were simply delicious! In summary, for me: a top-notch bar with decent food.

Everything's great, but why is the amber cake always out? I mean, you're the amber, and there's no amber cake??? Update: I've been back twice, and both times they had the amber cake. Yay!

This isn't my first time visiting this restaurant. I always enjoy the food selection. This time, however, I was disappointed by the service. The waitress seemed completely uninterested and unmotivated. Unfortunately, the wrong drink was also brought. Nevertheless, I'll probably come back, as I like the atmosphere and the food is generally good.

We were looking for a nice place to grab a bite to eat in the afternoon. In addition to the regular menu, The Bernstein has a special weekly special, where dishes are offered at slightly lower prices until 5 p.m. I had an Asian bowl, which was incredibly delicious. The view is amazing, and the seating is really nice. Definitely recommend it 👍

Spontaneously went to Bernstein for the first time this afternoon. Nice that there is an elevator. Very, very nice service, the food - "Königsberger" + "Alfredo di Manzo" (pasta with fillet tips, the rocket on top was even nicely dressed) - really very good, price-performance ratio, plus the great view - we'll definitely be back. Then we also test the cocktails.-)

Always goes for a drink in a nice atmosphere and a beautiful view! I've always had bad luck when it comes to eating. Sometimes the chicken was still raw inside, sometimes the fries were ice cold. I complained about food here for the first time in my life because I just couldn't eat it. The prices are definitely not cheap, e.g. €15 for a fries/currywurst. Depending on where you sit, it unfortunately smells a bit like a toilet. I still come here regularly for drinks, but unfortunately I no longer eat here.

Today we had lunch because we know Bernstein from earlier times. I had a rhubarb/thyme lemonade. A drink came that consisted of 80% ice cubes. I ordered the falafel dish from the lunch menu and my husband ordered the Madras chicken with curry. Two mini dishes came, I had three tablespoons of vegetables and my husband had a chicken cube in the dish. There can be no question of satiation. My husband complained about the minimal amount of meat. There was only a shrug of the shoulders from the waitress. A minimum level of appreciation would be an apology from the chef. So we won't be visiting Bernstein again. The absolutely empty restaurant at lunchtime also speaks volumes.

It was very nice, the selection at the buffet was standard and OK. Everything was fresh and it was always refilled promptly. Apparently they were understaffed. The service staff were always friendly. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great. But there's a point deducted for the dingy bathroom. This should be checked every hour. The handwashing sink had at least not been thoroughly cleaned during the week.

Unfortunately, more appearance than reality: Using my order of chicken involtini with spinach filling, potato gratin and ratatouille as an example. The chicken tasted warmed up and lukewarm, the ratatouille was a vegetable pan with tomato sauce (“Ratatouille is a braised vegetable stew..”) and the potato gratin was not gratinated and was just potato slices with sauce that tasted like convenience. Service was declining sharply despite the decreasing number of guests - we then went to the front to pay after waiting 20 minutes. Very nice atmosphere, excellent view over Bielefeld and the surrounding area. But unfortunately I had the impression that that was the only focus of the restaurant. We will definitely like to visit the bar again.

We arrived in a good mood, while our order was taken (5 drinks and also a large bottle of water) we initially waited about 40 minutes for our order. The order arrived with the wrong drink and a small bottle of water. We kindly pointed this out, after another waiting time of about 10 minutes a bald waiter came when we complained and explained that we shouldn't lie! It's rude to treat the guests like that, a friendly apology would have settled the matter instead there is discussion and the mood is brought down. Never again !

I really liked Bernstein, but the last time the service wasn't good at all. We were the last ones there in the evening, and I can understand if you want to go home at some point. However, the restaurant was still open for an hour (according to plan) and the other guests only left shortly beforehand. The waitress told us a good 5 minutes in advance that it was the last round, so I ordered another drink. When I got my drink, the heat lamps were turned off, the windbreak was raised (it was very cold) and then we were rudely told: "We're just waiting for you!". If you want to go home don't offer a last round? 😂 a cocktail isn't that easy to make and I hurried along. I didn't think we were going at all, and by the way, no one said goodbye when we left :) I thought it was a shame and it made me really angry.

The food was super delicious! Beautifully prepared and a portion to fill you up. The service was also good. You are welcome here with children. There are high chairs, enough space for the stroller (sometimes right next to the table), colored pencils and a card for coloring and doodling. There are also children's meals. Extra requests such as no salt in the food or no crushed ice in the drink are taken into account and implemented as best as possible. We were absolutely satisfied and will definitely come back!
