Schwabinger Osterwaldgarten in München

We were at Osterwaldgarten last week and ordered roast beef with fried potatoes. Unfortunately, the roast beef was dry, the fried potatoes were burnt, and only lukewarm. The dish seemed carelessly presented, and at this price, you definitely expect more in Munich. Particularly disappointing in such a beautiful location: the service also seemed inauthentic and difficult to understand – which didn't exactly contribute to the ambiance. Overall, a disappointing visit – we had hoped for much more.

For me, the Osterwaldgarten is one of the most beautiful beer gardens in all of Munich. I love sitting under the old chestnut trees in the summer – it immediately captures the true Munich spirit. And in the winter, the inn's interior, with its beautiful wood paneling, is just as cozy. The food is delicious, down-to-earth, and always fresh. The service is always cheerful and simply brilliant! You feel completely welcome. For me, it's a definite must: absolutely recommended – no matter the season!

A huge thank you to the team at Osterwaldgarten, who welcomed us and our wedding party so spontaneously. The service was so warm and friendly, and the food was truly excellent. Really good Bavarian meat dishes, and the cheese spaetzle was also amazing. We'll definitely be back!

I remember the Osterwaldgarten from my early youth. Back then, it was a simple and cozy beer garden that everyone enjoyed and could afford. Nowadays, its prices are in the very high range, which—unfortunately, because it's still cozy and good—makes it somewhat unaffordable for some. The menu offers something for everyone, including Munich/Bavarian dishes that you can't find everywhere. We opted for roast pork (€19.80) and Böfflamott (€25.80). Both dishes are highly recommended. The sauces and side dishes were really good. The meat is also of high quality, but unfortunately, ours was a bit too dry; the pork practically frayed (perhaps it had been overheated in the oven). But perhaps we caught it at a bad time (Saturday around 3 p.m.). All in all, the beer garden is still recommended if you have the necessary change (regular beer, for example, costs around €6, while Kellerbier costs €6.10). We'll definitely come back when we get the chance. Especially since dogs are also well looked after there. 🙂 The service was also very nice and extremely friendly. 👍

Creepy, creepy... But first things first: We wanted something to eat and drink there. We decided on roast pork with dumplings and cabbage. Here was the thoroughly disappointing meal: The plates were cold, the roast pork slices thinly sliced and so tough that we realized why they could only serve it to guests in very thin layers. The rubbery dumpling was the size of a small tangerine and just as lukewarm as the pitiful remains on the plate. The sauce was so watery and bland that it perfectly rounded off the horror plate. For €5.80, there was also a "carrot salad" in a mini bowl that tasted like it came out of a bucket. When we asked for the bill after sampling the pathetic "cooking" of this inn, the locals at the next table turned to us and said, "You can forget about eating here!" But then we realized why everyone else only had drinks on the table. A scary experience no one deserves. We went there twice that evening—the first and last time!

Gruselig, gruselig ... Aber alles der Reihe nach: Wir wollten dort etwas essen und trinken. Die Enscheidung fiel auf Schweinsbraten mit Kloß und Kraut. Hier nun das durch und durch enttäuschende Essen: Die Teller waren kalt, die Schweinsbratenscheinben dünn geschnitten und so zäh, dass uns klar wurde warum man den nur ganz dünn an die Gäste verscherbeln konnte. Der gummiartige Kloß war so groß wie eine kleinen Mandarine und genau so lauwarm wie der erbärmliche Rest auf dem Teller. Die Soße war so wässrig und fad, dass sie den Horrorteller perfekt abgerundet hat. Frür 5,80€ gab es noch einen "Karutsalat" im Minischälchen der wie aus dem Eimer geschmekt hat. Als wir nach der Verkostung der erbärmlichen "Kochkunst" dieses Gasthauses die Rechnung wollten, haben sich die Einheimischen vom Nachbartisch an uns gewand mit den Worten: "Das Essen hier kannst vergessen!" Nur wurde uns klar, warum alle außer uns nur Getränke auf dem Tisch hatten. Eine gruselige Erfahrung die kein Mensch verdient hat. Wir waren an diesem Abend zwei mal dort - das erste und das letzte mal!

Nice beer garden. Attentive and friendly staff. Special culinary requests were accommodated. We came without a reservation. However, it's definitely worth making a reservation in advance, as the place is very popular.

A 0.4-liter juice spritzer for 8 euros. I think that says it all.

The portion size was fine. I had the giant schnitzel and it was quite filling. The quality was OK, but the meat was a bit tender. The cleaning lady in the restroom (in the restaurant) wanted money from you. The service was friendly and attentive.

Wir haben in Schwabing einen Biergarten gesucht, wo man ruhig und schattig unter Bäumen sitzen kann. Hier wurden wir fündig und waren sehr zufrieden. Das Essen, eine Kugel Obatzter und Schweizer Wurstsalat, war sehr lecker. Einzig der Service hätte etwas schneller sein können.

Wir hatten per email und noch zusätzlich per Telefon einen Tisch für 4 Personen bestellt. Der Tisch wurde uns fest zugesagt, wir kamen pünktlich von auswärts. Im Restaurant stand ein ausländischer Herr, der uns sofort blockierte, da sei nichts reserviert, wir müssen wieder gehn, er !! ist hier der Chef, also so unfreundlich. Wir haben uns aber nicht einschüchtern lassen und bestanden auf einem Tisch. Und siehe da, im schönen Nebenraum waren 3 Tische ganz frei ohne jede Reservierung. So geht es nicht!! Atmosphäre sehr schön, Bedienung eine nett eine grantig und ungeduldig, Schweinebratengut, Entenkeule hart wie ein Stein, Blaukraut direkt in der Sauße, lieblos angerichtet. Schade, Lage sehr schön.

A fantastic restaurant/beer garden with excellent service and hard-bitten, experienced staff. I'm convinced that at least 90% of the staff are chain smokers, otherwise they wouldn't be able to provide such great service. The food is excellent and arrives quickly. I'd happily return!

Worst service ever, unappetizing, unfriendly, unsympathetic, snippy, and almost unbearable. Despite the good food, not recommended; eating is a visual experience. Once and never again. Our spending for one visit was around €200, which we'd be happy to take to friendlier neighboring restaurants.

Tasty bitter schnitzel, fast and friendly service.

Very funny, bright and typically cheeky Bavarian service that you don't know any other way in good Bavarian restaurants. It was my first time with my family in the Osterwaldgarten and I would come back without question. The outdoor area is surprisingly large, well covered in case of rain and dogs are tolerated both in the beer garden/outdoor area and in the restaurant. 🙏🏽 4x roast pork with dumplings, crusty crusts, special requests and sauce were excellently served to our team. The vegetarian lentil dish must also have been very good according to fellow visitors. Anytime again, great location directly at the English Garden.

So what can you say? A perfect beer garden in the immediate vicinity of the English Garden not far from Münchener Freiheit. The food is high quality and priced accordingly, no cheap meat! A dream for every palate who wants to get to know and enjoy Bavarian cuisine. We were there twice in one weekend and certainly not for the last time! The service: on the first day (according to the bill: Flo K.) something attentive and friendly, like from another world! He just comes over and asks if I would like some more jus with the dumplings, it's boring without sauce....brings it and says: "Now it's fun again!" Nothing appears on the bill.....and my wife's wine spritzer was immediately announced: "I'll bring some more ice cream, right?" So she could vary the ratio according to her mood. And also on the second day (Mike) was extremely friendly, very attentive and always with a funny saying! Conclusion: a traditional restaurant (since 1847) with an excellent ambience, great service and outstanding cuisine!

Very nice and quiet beer garden right at the Englischengarten. The schnitzel is very tasty (I recommend the fried potatoes with it 👌). The Kaiserschmarrn is also very good and caramelized, but without rum raisins. The waiters are very friendly and the service is always quick.

Beautiful beer garden in Schwabing, just before you leave the town and enter the English Garden. Did it already exist when it was still a village and not yet part of Munich? Whatever the case, it's still a bit like the good old days here. Good food, but not exactly cheap.

Nice place for summer next to English garden. But 29.99 eur for a full Schnitzel like in the picture was absolutely overpriced and felt like I was being robbed. The meat was super thin. You can definitely find better food in other places. Beer, wine and food over priced for the quantity and the quality.

I have known the Osterwaldgarten for almost 60 years and I am happy that it exists and that it has been able to retain its original atmosphere. The food is excellent, the service is really outstanding and you just feel comfortable there. It's very cozy inside and when the weather is nice there's a wonderful beer garden. Duck and roast pork are excellent, but I find it extremely pleasing that there are now more interesting vegetarian dishes and that the cheese pätzle now also has a permanent place on the menu.

Very good alternative to the beer garden at the Seehaus

My family and I have enjoyed coming here for years. Unfortunately the quality of the food is deteriorating more and more! Today I had a roast pork and it really wasn't good at all, the sauce was light and tasteless! Apparently it was the same chef as always, I asked the waiter about it... he obviously didn't care that I was dissatisfied! It's a shame, it used to be my favorite restaurant Food 0 points Service maximum 2 points 👎👎👎

Da ich in der unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft zum Osterwaldgarten wohne, besuche ich diesen Gasthof in unregelmässigen Abständen seit Jahrzehnten. Was mich allerdings im Sommer 2024 bei meinem wahrscheinlich letzten Besuch schier vom Stuhl warf, war die Preissteigerung für eine Radlermass im Vergleich zum Vorjahr: + 2 Euro auf nunmehr 11,00 Euro, d.h.: exakt 22,2% mehr als im Vorjahr!! Auf meine Frage nach dem Hintergrund dieser exorbitanten Preissteigerung entgegnete der Kellner mit einem süffisanten Lächeln lapidar: "Das ist halt Schwabing". Und ich muß eingestehen: Da hat er Recht!

Unfortunately I have to agree with the negative reviews: the quality and preparation of the food has deteriorated for some reason. Unfortunately, people now probably work with ready-made products in the kitchen. And you can taste it. This can be easily recognized by the allergen labels that are now mandatory next to the dishes on the menu. Unfortunately, these reveal (including the allergen statement “I” “grain containing gluten”) that in the Osterwaldgarten, too, all dark sauces from roast pork, goulash, Böfflamot, duck and onion roast are now mixed together with the same cheap Maggi or Knorr ready-made sauce from the wholesale market . Unfortunately, when it came to the dark sauce for the Böfflamot, the cheap instant quality was too noticeable and the taste was therefore absolutely not enjoyable. With relatively high prices, guests now expect appropriate quality without the use of finished products. The days when guests were content with instant sauces and meals are now over, with prices now averaging €25 to €30 for main courses and beer prices at €5.50. Unfortunately, the price/performance ratio in the Osterwaldgarten is no longer right for us.

Wir waren schon oft in diesem Restaurant, leider war diesmal das Essen sehr schlecht., und ohne jeden Geschmack. Zwei Gerichte sind zurückgegeben worden. Die Zwiebeln auf den Käsespatzen waren noch das Beste an diesem Gericht, denn sie waren aus der Büchse. Die Reaktion: die Gerichte werden natürlich nicht berechnet. Kein Wort der Entschuldigung. Der Service war wohl überfordert. So war es garantiert der letzte Besuch, es gibt viele bessere Restaurants!

Very crowded and very narrow! Never specify children with their own seat in the table reservation! We got the worst place right at the door to the toilet (6 adults and 2 children 7 and 5 years old). You can do it with families!!!! The service was very friendly with Asian understanding. We had to wait a long time for our food After I finally got my Boefflamotte due to a food mix-up, I was very surprised and disappointed, on the oval plate, hardened bread dumpling pieces, then red cabbage that was in the sauce and on top of that two thin slices with a slight fat edge, the Boeff! Such a disappointment for €25.00 I don't want to go into more detail about everything else... What a shame for Boxing Day. Maybe just bad luck? Anyway, a nice place all around with the beautiful inn building.

Ich kann mich nicht erinnern wann ich das letzte Mal so schlecht gegessen habe und das bei einem völlig überhöhten Preis. Die Leberknödelsuppe für 8,90 war völlig versalzen. Als wir reklamiert haben bekamen wir einen neuen Teller. Geschmack dann null nur praktisch mit heißem Wasser verdünnt. Ich habe eine Fischsuppe gegessen. Das war ein normaler Suppenteller wo nicht mal mit Brühe voll war. Es waren ca 4 Stückchen ( ganz klein geschnitten) Fisch drin. Der Rest war schon komplett zerfallen aber auch da nur geringe Menge. Die Flüssigkeit war eigentlich nur geschmacklich Glas mit Fischfond erhitzt. Keinerlei sonstige Gewürze nur ganz wenig Gemüse. . Der Scampispieß war trocken und kalt. Das Baguette wurde mir schon 5 Minuten vor der Suppe gebracht und war dann auch schon kalt und steinhart. Die Aoli war ungefähr ein gestrichener Esslöffel. So und jetzt kommt’s: für 22 EUR!!!!! Unverschämtheit Übrigens haben auch die 3 Herren am Nebentisch gemeint dass dieses Lokal sicher von ihnen nicht mehr besucht wird weil das Essen schlecht war und der Preis dafür völlig überhöht. Nie wieder

The Schwabinger Osterwaldgarten is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy. Great atmosphere inside and outside with a nice beer garden. You will be treated with great attention & friendliness. Great food with a delicious beer. I've been there several times now and would love to come back.

Delightful restaurant and outstanding service! Friendly, attentive, nice, helpful and fast. Food was very, very good, there were 15 of us and we still had a la carte. Up and down the whole map and everything was great. Prices surprisingly fair for the quality, portion size and city center. Definitely a recommendation and I would be happy to come back! The Osterwaldgarten used to be one of my favorite hotspots in Schwabing... Beautiful outdoor area, right next to the English Garden, good Bavarian cuisine and always good and charming service But today it looks a little different, sometimes it's "okay" sometimes it's really disappointing. Dishes like duck or knuckle used to be legendary, but today they're just average It's a shame because the location is great and the potential is definitely there.

We took a relaxed hour walk from the centre of old town through the English gardens to get here, but there is convenient public transport right on the doorstep. Service was excellent, very helpful to non German speaking tourists. Food and beer both outstanding. We loved the venue and felt like we were locals for our time here. Definitely worth the visit.
