Schmock in München

The atmosphere was very nice, even in the courtyard, and the service was excellent. The food was lukewarm and nothing special, but it was quite expensive.

As soon as you enter the stylishly decorated restaurant, it's clear that attention to detail is paid to every detail – from the interior to the warm welcome. The atmosphere is warm, modern, yet cozy – you feel immediately welcome. The evening began with a small but exquisite greeting from the kitchen: a dreamy ceviche, so delicately seasoned that you felt transported to South America for a moment. The freshness of the fish, the perfect acidity, the delicate aromas – a foretaste of what was to come. The appetizer platter was a revelation: various hummus variations and creamy spreads, each a small work of art in its own right. Harmoniously balanced, lovingly presented, and simply incredible in taste. For our main courses, we chose surf & turf and Königsberger Klopse – and both dishes were absolute highlights. The surf & turf came with tender meat, perfectly cooked shrimp, and roasted green asparagus that retained its bite – a rarity! The fiber-free, velvety puree was a poem – so simple, yet so sophisticated. The Königsberger Klopse (Klops of Königsberg) deserve a special mention: This dish is unparalleled in Berlin – even grandma's classics are overshadowed here. Traditional – a real treat! At the end, we were once again surprised with a special treat from the kitchen: small, deep-fried balls with a nougat filling and a sauce you'd love to lick with a spoon – spicy, balanced, simply irresistible. But what made this evening truly unforgettable was the service: attentive, warm, unobtrusive – perfect doesn't quite describe it. It was absolutely perfect. You can tell that the people here are passionate about their work – both in the kitchen and in the service. All in all: an evening full of enjoyment, warmth, and genuine hospitality. A place where you not only feel full, but truly at home. We'll definitely be back – and bring friends with us.

Schmock ist jiddisch und bedeutet "Tölpel" oder einfach "unangenehmer Mensch". In diesem Restaurant ist der Barkeeper ohne Haare, dafür aber mit überdimensionalem Bart, die vollkommene Entsprechung dieser Bezeichnung und ich fragte mich nach dem heutigen Besuch, ob das Restaurant wohl nach ihm benannt worden ist.Wahrscheinlich Konzept. München ist erneut zur unfreundlichsten Stadt Deutschland gekrönt worden und genau Menschen wie er tragen dazu bei.Ich habe das Schmock besucht, weil ich in fremden Städten Theaterrestaurants immer als einen Platz für Menschen ausserhalb der Norm empfunden habe:Künstler,Gestrandete, Literaten, Phliosophen,einfach nette Menschen, die keine Lust haben, sich anzupassen und jeden so leben lassen, wie sie oder er ist. Bisher hatte das, egal in welcher Stadt ich in Deutschland war auch immer super funktioniert.Nicht so in München im Volkstheater. Gedankenverloren bestellte ich bei ihm den Vorspeisenteller. Dieser wird in 3 Größen angeboten. Um keine Verwechslung zu riskieren,sagte ich: den Kleinen bitte, für 16 Euro...diese Bemerkung meinerseits, hat den guten Mann so aus seiner Reserve gelockt, dass er sich gezwungen sah, mich bei meinen reizenden Tischnachbarinnen auf gröbste Form lächerlich zu machen, indem er die Nennung des Preises 7-8 mal wiederholte und von den Damen nach Bestätigung suchte, was für eine blöde Kuh ich doch sei, den Preis zu nennen. Als ich ihn bat damit auszuhören, sagte er nur: "Das nennt man eben Humor. Alle lachen außer Ihnen. Sogar der Herr am Nachbartisch." Er zog also weiter zum Nachbartisch und führte mich wegen meiner Äusserung von vorne bei weiteren Gästen vor. Ich habe die Bestellung daraufhin storniert und das Lokal verlassen. Das Schmock ist generell jedoch kein Ort, wo man so toleriert wird wie man ist.Ein frustierter Mitarbeiter zeigt einfach nur, wie ungern er unterschiegliche Menschen hat....Verlorene Zeit.

Schmock has a very nice ambiance. Some of the food was interesting, overall very tasty, and the menu was quite unusual. Our service was very attentive and friendly. So far, everything was fine, and up to that point, it was "full marks," but unfortunately, the value for money is not at all right. Even by Munich standards, the prices are far too high, both for the food and for the drinks (with the exception of the beers). The portions, however, are very manageable. It's a shame, because the rest of the food is good. But it's great for a beer before the theater.

Very friendly staff, great atmosphere and the cuisine is unique!

I love this restaurant. The ambience is great and the food tastes fantastic. The menu is large enough and the service is good. I can't say anything negative.

We were here for an office Christmas party. Lovely place. It was a 3 course meal. The food was delicious. I went for vegan meal. Everything was great. My colleagues had nonveg, they said it was great too.

Super cozy atmosphere right next to the theater. The starter plate was very diverse and incredibly tasty. Unfortunately the meat was a bit tough, so we would have expected a little more. Unfortunately, our condition seemed very stressed, left everything on the table very carelessly and really didn't take any time for us. Here too we would have expected something different in a restaurant like this.

It is located right next to the Volkstheater in Munich. The ambience and the accompanying peace are the trademark of the restaurant. Since we wanted to go to the theater and our time was limited, we ordered a meze plate for two people. Everything was very tasty. The wine list was extensive and the staff was very friendly. I definitely recommend it.

A real gem in the Munich Volkstheater! Before our visit to the theater we wanted to have a little something to eat and were absolutely positively surprised. The food was not only incredibly tasty, but also prepared with great attention to detail. The service was warm, attentive and lightning fast - exactly what you want before a performance. The great ambience rounds off the experience perfectly - stylish, cozy and with a special atmosphere that invites you to linger. Particularly practical: We were able to pre-order our drinks for the break - perfect all-round service! An ideal start to a successful evening at the theater. Reservations recommended, especially if you want to dine near theater start times. We would definitely like to come back!

The food was rather disappointing to average for the price. The big problem was the service, endless waiting times and unpleasant waiters. The ambience is nice. Recommended for a break drink but that’s about it.

We've been here several times, but the service and food have deteriorated a lot. The waiter with a bald head and a beard was super unfriendly and annoyed. The meat cold and the starter with a hair in it.

Great food, good service and great interior

Overall a nice experience. The food is excellent and the ambience is great. However, you can clearly see that some of the waiters are in a very bad mood. During my stay, a man behind the bar shouted: "And that's exactly what I'm not up for anymore!!!!" and threw one plate onto another. That's just not so nice, you don't want to eat somewhere where the employees don't feel comfortable at all. You should work on it or at least complain about it where the customers don't see it.

Excellent food and wine in a modern, chic setting with dim lighting. Although it's pretty, the new Volkstheater location feels less cozy than the previous Maxvorstadt spot due to its large hall-like space. Service was mixed - one waitress was lovely, but our second waiter was quite unfriendly. We tried the Valentine's meat menu (€60 for three courses) - great value for high-quality food.

We dined here on a Saturday evening. The food and drinks were really excellent and the ambience is nice too. The prices aren't cheap, but I thought it was okay for the quality. Until we wanted to pay. The service was just okay, we had to wait a long time, so we wanted to tip 5%. But then we were informed that the house rule was to tip at least 8%. Totally cheeky, I decide how much to tip based on the quality of service. We are not in the USA here.

Delicious food and a nice ambience

The food was fantastic, the service friendly and unobtrusive. We felt very comfortable and since we actually wanted to try out the entire menu, there will of course have to be further visits

The staff is so unbelievably unfriendly, I've never experienced that before. Both to the people who work there and to the audience. Especially during Radical Jung the bar people were very unfriendly and I wondered why they were even doing this job (and it looked like they were wondering that too at that moment) The food was great

Das Ambiente ist wunderschön. Unsere Bedienung war sehr freundlich. Nur das Essen war leider laukalt. Bei Curry nicht so dann erfreulich. Und für den Preis viel zu wenig Gemüse im Curry.

Das Schmock ist einer sehr schönes Restaurant. Super leckeres Essen und tolles Ambiente! Zu besonderen Anlässen oder auch einfach einen schönen entspannten Abend. Immer wieder gerne!

Nice restaurant but worse service.

Sehr leckeres Essen, schöner Raum, freundliche Bedienung, aber viel zu wenig Personal für die vielen Tische. Dadurch war der Versuch, ein weiteres Getränk später nachzubestellen, fast unmöglich. Außerdem Stress beim Bezahlen.

Wir waren bereits viele Male im Schmock und sind immer wieder begeistert von den superfreundlichen Mitarbeitern, der entspannten Atmosphäre und dem leckeren Gerichten, die es dort gibt.

Der Service / die Bedienung waren hervorragend! Die Auswahl der Speisen fand ich zu gering: hätte gerne mehr Salate oder kleine Gerichte gehabt?! Qualitativ war aber alles o.k. - die Portion ein bisschen zu klein für meinen Geschmack und ich bin kein großer Esser?!

Ein ganz tolles Lokal vor oder nach dem Theaterbesuch oder einfach so!

Wir hatten einen wahnsinnig tollen Abend im Schmock - Service absolut super - Essen absolut top - Ambiente super, da wurde anscheinend die letzten Jahre viel gemacht - Lichtsituation, Akustik alles super. Toll fanden wir die handgeschriebene Karte mit einer Auswahl die alle mehr als zufriedenstellte. Unser Kellner Hung und auch die anderen Mädels waren durch Ihre witzige Art eine absolute Bereicherung an diesem Abend Wir kommen gerne wieder und können das Schmock wärmstens empfehlen

We had an incredibly wonderful evening at Schmock – absolutely fantastic service – absolutely top-notch food – fantastic ambiance; it seems like a lot has been done there in recent years – the lighting, the acoustics, everything was great. We loved the handwritten menu with a selection that more than satisfied everyone. Our waiter, Hung, and the other girls were a real asset to the evening with their witty manner. We'd love to come back and highly recommend Schmock.

Wunderbar. Ein tolles Ambiente, aufmerksamer und freundlicher Service. Leckeres und vielfältiges Essen. Schönes Geschirr. Gute Weinauswahl. Wer israelische und arabisches Esssrn mag ist hier genau richtig. Das Restaurant ist Teil des Volkstheaters und viele Gäste gehen nach dem Essen in die Vorstellung. Wir hatten bereits um 17:00 reserviert und das Lokal füllte sich mit bunt gemischtem Publikum. Eine schöne Athmosphäre. Wir haben den hinteren Teil als gemütlicher zum Essen empfunden.

I was there a long time ago and it was fantastic. Will definitely be back once I'm in Germany again!

The steak is fantastic. Atmosphere is a bit shaky, coz while it’s really beautiful inside, it can get full, and obviously loud. The theatre next to it doesn’t help much. But probably we chose the wrong day to visit, where the was a theatre show, and a group(choir), that were likely meeting for Christmas dinner, and all of a sudden they started singing Christmas Carols. This is hard if you’re trying to have a conversation..

Schönes Ambiente, sehr gutes Essen in kurzer Zeit zum Tisch gebracht. Sehr entspannend vor dem Volkstheaterbesuch.

Außerordentlich freundlicher und sehr zuvorkommender Service. Das Essen, die Aperitifs und Weine waren hervorragend. Hier kommen wir auf jeden Fall wieder.

Saibling und Königsberger Klopse nicht empfehlenswert, viel zu teuer, langweilige Gerichte. Weitere Kritik: wenig Abwechslung bei den angebotenen Gerichten. Aperitiv viel zu teuer, schade, dass es im Volkstheater so ein wenig passendes Restaurant gibt. Positiv waren Weißburgunder und eine sehr gute Nachspeise.

Ausgezeichnetes Essen, toller Service. Wir hatten einen herrlichen Abend! Auch für unsere Begleitung mit Rollstuhl hat alles perfekt gepasst.

I've been there many times before or after the theater. Excellent starters, great wine selection. Super cozy and excellent service. The day before yesterday we had a celebration there with 20 guests. There was a great menu and delicious wine. The service was again simply great, the contact with Stefania was very nice. Nothing was left to be desired. Thanks to the whole team! Hannah & Dinah

The Schmock is a special experience. We experienced it on a weeknight and found the concept very harmonious. The warm welcome, the modern ambience that still feels very comfortable thanks to the colors and furnishings in this impressively large room, and of course the small but nice menu. My companion has to follow a diet that excludes some (unfortunately often common) components in the kitchen. This fact, which is quite challenging for a restaurant, was accepted without batting an eyelid. A complete menu was built around the needs of my companion so that starter, main course and dessert could be enjoyed. This is service that is rarely experienced today. I was able to try my hand at everything from the menu and from the starter plate to the dumplings to the dessert with pistachio ice cream and date confectionery, everything was very tasty and completely sufficient. Regarding the price, we have to say: We are in Munich, the ingredients are not exactly the cheapest and, in general, it is best to find out beforehand what price range a restaurant is in... The consistently relaxed, very attentive manner of the service staff did the rest to make the evening perfect . I can understand that some people can't handle the ironic, quite provocative posters. You're just not used to that. But hey, maybe you can pull out your stick and look at things from a different, completely absurd perspective and get involved. In any case, we would love to come back.

I found the staff's tone quite difficult to get used to. I really wish the employees had a little more joy in what they do. So, surrounded by this tense, rude atmosphere, the visit isn't really fun.

Es gibt exzellente besondere Gerichte in gefälliger Darreichung. Nicht billig, aber das Geld wert. Der Kellner war sehr freundlich und aufmerksam.

Nice restaurant, nice service, but portions far too small for the high prices. We left the restaurant hungry. It's a real shame because everything tasted good.

Freundlicher Service, gutes Essen und eine schöne Atmosphäre, vor allem nicht so laut wie in anderen Restaurants dieser Größe

Wir hatten eine Reservierung für 17:30 and waren bereits 17:10 im Lokal. Ich hatte vorab reserviert. Leider hat man uns nur einen kleinen Bartisch direkt am Durchgang zur Bar zugeteilt. Also die schlechtesten Plätze und ohne Platz für ein komplettes Menü. Meine Freundin bestellte Königsperger Klöpse, diese waren völlig versalzen und wir mussten sie zurückgegeben. Die Küche hatte das auch noch selbst bestätigt. Dann wurde ein Rindertartar bestellt, auch dieser war sehr salzig. Es war also nicht gerade unser Abend und ich hatte meiner Freundin so von der Küche vorgeschwärmt. Leider hat die Qualität und die Freundlichkeit seit dem Sommer doch sehr nachgelassen. Ich hoffe, Sie nehmen sich meine Kriitk zu Herzen. Habe gestern noch versucht meine Erfahrungen persönlich zu platzieren, aber ich habe leider nemanden im Barbereich angetroffen. Grüße Eva L.

Spannende Küche und sehr gute Qualität. Preise sind in Ordnung für die Speisen. Getränke etwas teuer! Gutes gemischtes Publikum durch das Thetater - man fühlt sich wie in einer Großstadt ;-) Sehr nettes internationales Personal. Schöne Sitzgruppen zum essen, mal was anderes. Wir kommen definitiv wieder!

Gute Speisenauswahl. Das Essen war lecker, allerdings passt für mich das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis nicht. 21 € für Kürbis und Kichererbsen finde ich zu teuer, selbst, wenn es Bio sein sollte. Der Service war trotz des vollen Hauses freundlich und aufmerksam. Die Atmosphäre war schön.

The place was really successful and we really liked it. Modern and tastefully furnished. The high rooms have flair. Ideal for eating before the theater. However, the food and service were disappointing for us. There were four of us and everyone found their food to be below average in terms of taste but above average in terms of price. We found the amount of the €40 starter for 3 people ridiculous. We all found the waiter to be unfriendly. And last but not least, we asked ourselves what they wanted to tell us about the 3 posters in front of the toilets 🤔.

Gold is sometimes just dull brass. There are four of us on site and we share a 40 euro starter for three. It came, laid out on a plate. Like it was so small for a person. When we asked if our food would come soon after 70 minutes. We were instructed by a very buttoned-up and condescending, unfriendly waiter: “We don't do anything off the shelf here, it has to be prepared first”. What came next was in no way up to the level we were hoping for based on the prices. A mish-mash kept its word, tasted nothing distinct. Was nominated by chopped dill. Curry with brown rice was spicy, but also here. Absolute wasteland, you can get it better in Indian. What was Tel Aviv about it? Unfortunately it wasn't clear to us. And one more thing: the posters in front of the toilet are tasteless and racist. The whole thing, unfortunately, was just a one-time experience. Price/performance, level of service. What a shame!!

A wonderful evening Actually just to kick off a nice visit to the theater, there was also a wonderfully relaxed nightcap until the end. Thanks to the stylishly reduced ambience, the extremely courteous service and the excellently refined cuisine, it is an unforgettable experience

The location and ambience of this restaurant right in the theater are really beautiful and create a great atmosphere. Unfortunately the food couldn't keep up. The dishes were rather mediocre and overall disappointing. The only bright spot was the shareable appetizer platter, which tasted really good.

The food was good and not everyday... The staff - at least one lady - was extremely unfriendly and does not correspond to the style of the restaurant... We were warmly welcomed and served quickly. We like to go to Schmock before a visit to the Volkstheater. I love the appetizer platter 😀

I showed up at the store in a hurry, after drinking 3.5 liters of beer at the Oktoberfest, I showed up there with no reservations and no sense of direction. I staggered into the store freezing, without my friends and with a cell phone without a battery, and yet I was warmly welcomed and seated. Despite initial communication difficulties due to the level, the staff managed to translate my rant into a beef tartare from the daily menu and a large water. After several attempts, the waitress also understood that my cell phone needed to be charged. After I had shoveled down the excellent beef tartare despite having coordination difficulties, I managed to pay. When I picked up my cell phone, which in the meantime had a whopping 17% charge, I was like a new person. Although I was 25€ poorer, which was particularly painful given my already limited student budget, I had now had time to sober up, eat a fantastic beef tartare and generally bring some perspective back into my life. Rarely have I felt so inspired after visiting a restaurant, 10/10

Das Essen war super-lecker, auch Gerichte, die man zu kennen glaubt, überraschen mit einer besonderen Gewürzen udn Aromen ganz neu. Ganz besonderes zu erwähnen ist der sehr aufmerksame und flinke, aber komplett unaufgeregte Service. Wir hatten den Besuch im Schmock mit anschließendem Theater-Besuch geplant und das lief alles prima. Klasse. Wir kommen wieder, auch mal ohne Theater-Besuch, damit wir uns auch für die Desserts noch Zeit nehmen können.

Das Lokal ist sehr schön, und das Personal sehr freundlich. Das ganze Essen war sehr lecker, obwohl ich zugeben muss, dass das Dessert mit Dattel und schwarzem Sesameis verbessert werden könnte. Trotzdem waren wir sehr zufrieden :)

Wonderful food in a great location will be back for sure

The wonderful Volkstheater moved from Rotkreuzplatz to its new house in the Schlachthofviertel some time ago. Luckily, the great director, the great actors, the fantastic people behind the stage and the friendly, beloved theater team were taken along. Unfortunately, the Schmock theater restaurant was also packed up. The Schmock offers - as the name suggests - predominantly Israeli-inspired cuisine, actually great, but unnecessarily fake and overambitious and at rather high prices. This concept only fits to a limited extent with popular theater, which fortunately appeals to a very broad audience. Otherwise, the Schmock scores with an admittedly great ambience that one would rather find in a major international city. But that's it for the international comparison, the quality of food and service cannot keep up when you think of Tel Aviv or New York. This assessment comes after several visits to the Schmock in the last two theater seasons. I still enjoy going to the wonderful Volkstheater, but I no longer go to the Schmock.

Wir sind Stammgäste im Schmock . Dieses Mal waren wir zum Abendessen mit Gästen aus Kanada auf der Terrasse im Innenhof. Die Atmosphäre dort ist extrem angenehm, das Essen ausgezeichnet. Jede Rückfrage ( glutenfrei, koffeinfrei ) wurde sehr freundlich und auch auf Englisch beabtwortet. Wir sind alle sehr glücklich über diesen gelungenen Abend.

One of the fantastic restaurants I know in Munich. Excellent service, excellent cuisine and a wonderful ambience. One of my favorite places. But I just read a comment from a certain Bridget Muller from five days ago. I think it's just this lady that's bottomless, but not the restaurant. You can imagine the arrogance with which Ms. Muller appeared if the staff actually seemed a little unfriendly. In any case, I have never received unfriendly service there. By none of the employees. Please don't let such unqualified comments stop you from visiting this wonderful restaurant.

One of my favorite places: the food is fantastic, my favorites: mezze plates and of course the Königsberger Klopse..! Service is top and the terrace invites you to linger at lunchtime.

How delicious can Israeli food be outside of Israel?! You will definitely find mega authentic dishes and fun, relaxed and courteous staff here. Plus a matching wine from the Golan Heights - what more could you want? The employees advise you and make personal recommendations. The ambience is warm and inviting. We'll definitely be back 😍

Wir hatten ein wunderbares Abendessen. Der Hof ist sehr schön.

We were last there yesterday evening and the operators are definitely not doing themselves any favors with their choice of service staff. An extremely arrogant and impolite "usherwoman" - who repeatedly runs over our mouths without greeting us - a no go in the hospitality industry. Things didn't fare much better for us at the self-service bar, bad-tempered boys who, when politely told that they weren't particularly friendly, replied "The guests aren't either" - that's not possible. When we also wanted ice cubes and didn't have a glass or deposit at the counter and therefore had to go back to the place, a "That's life" followed. Hospitality is a service - and such answers are more than wrong. The falaffel plate was accordingly bland and slapped onto the plate with lukewarm hummus (on top mayonnaise?). You would expect a little more for the location and the prices in the self-service area, we like to spend money, but the performance, and above all the friendliness and enjoyment of the work, have to be right. It would be a nice location, but with other employees - this will discourage you from coming back again. But - maybe the operators here will read this too.

Very nice and attentive service. The food was again excellent all round. I can only recommend it to everyone.

As always, we went to the "Schmock" after visiting the Volkstheater - so it's time to write a review. As a real lover of the "Königsberger Klopse" in Schmock, I may be a bit biased, but it's always a pleasure to be there! Big praise for the kitchen and the always very friendly service!

Unfortunately, the very average quality of the food here does not justify the high price.

Was a guest at Schmock on Thursday evening after a performance in the theater. I asked the waiter to come and take the order. But my daughter was still unsure about her order at that moment. The waiter then said in an extremely unfriendly tone that the order couldn't be taken yet and then showed me a sign (two fingers pointed at my eyes) that I should probably look better - an incredibly disrespectful, outrageous approach with guests! Left the place stunned by such behavior and will certainly not be coming back!

Very nice location, a bit overpriced for what is on offer, but the beautiful outdoor area is worth it. The service sometimes takes a bit of getting used to... A third are very nice, the rest are extremely arrogant.

Very tasty food and a good start to an evening at the theater.

Very nice restaurant especially the terrace is nicely set up for hot summer evenings. The food was fresh and tasty, service fast. Only the dessert options are limited and I would say maybe a little bit overpriced.

The waitress was so unfriendly and unsympathetic to us that we got up before ordering. Likewise the table next to us.
