Saravanaa Bhavan in Köln

Idli Vada and Mini Idli was good. Vada could’ve been hot but it was mildly warm. North Indian dishes are not that good. White chutney and sambar and chutney podi was good. Green chutney has too much mint.

Be careful before ordering the food, their portion is hugeeee! I couldn‘t even eat half of my main course, because apparently my appetizer was so big and made me full already. I felt so bad to throw the food but yeah, maybe you better share one appetizer and so you can eat your main course nicely. But everything we ate were tasty, we won‘t complain for that.

FILTHY TOILET & WASH AREA: The food was great. The service was good. Real authentic South Indian Vegetarian Food. The toilets and washing area were filthy and stinking. I wonder why such a good place for food cannot maintain a clean wash room and toilets 😟

This Indian restaurant is all about the dosa – and rightly so! The different dosa variants are recommended, with a wonderful, aromatic taste that is perfectly rounded off by the accompanying dips and curries. If you eat here, you should definitely try the dosa! The Kati Wrap, on the other hand, was okay but couldn't keep up with the dosa dishes. Mon should focus more on the dosa variants. The furnishings are rather simple and functional, the tables are minimalist, which doesn't necessarily seem inviting. Nevertheless, the restaurant scores with super nice and extremely fast service, which enhances the overall impression.

South Indian very tasty food 😋 👌

To be very frank. Overall wherever I go the quality of Saravanan Bhavan has gone down. It’s no more authentic any more. I guess they are not representing the true South Indian taste, what I used to have. I missed that taste. As compared to Frankfurt Saravanaa Bhavan this is better. At the same time there were many good things like: food was served instant, staff was trained good and were very helpful!

Authentic Indian cuisine, which is evident from the presence of 80% Indian guests. That's why it's very common here to eat with your hand; I actually recently did that myself in India. The food was very good and tasty and included typical dishes from Chennai, something different from other Indian restaurants. There is a separate hand basin with soap so you can wash your hands before and after eating separately from the toilets. The service was very friendly and, among other things, pointed out to us if a dish was very spicy and therefore not necessarily suitable for the German palate, and made other suggestions. By the way, the restaurant was recommended to us by an Indian colleague from Chennai.

With one exception, the very friendly and uncomplicated staff don't speak any German, but we got along well. The stainless steel trays instead of conventional plates may be authentic, but they don't seem to be of high quality and also ensure that the food gets cold quickly. The cheese naan for the starter was just sprinkled with cheese and not filled - we knew it differently from other restaurants. There are no sauces for this either, which is a shame. And no plate either - that only came when asked. My food was good, but unfortunately not really spicier than that of my three companions at the same table, despite my order being different. Some of them complained about too much spiciness. And in order to promote communication with the staff, we had to ask again specifically for Messer.

Had dosas. Was too good, almost like having it in India. Good portions, Dosas were big enough.

If you are looking for good food then Ok but let´s not get carried away with the word Authentic. Am a pure south indian and let me tell you tht the food here tastes far from being tasty! Dosa´s are a ripper with no taste in batter and the Dosa itself! Manchurians are colorful and tht stops there! If you love south indian then this is definitely not serving you the best one! Am sorry we have been there more than twice and every time disappointed with almost all the dishes we ordered. Am not talking about the price here since it is unjustified for the food they offer. So pls decide and visit. Pls do not go by the brand. On the contrary, the same outlet in FRA is far better and food tastes much better.

In every restaurant it should be an absolute given that there is enough soap in the toilet. Even more so in a restaurant where people eat a lot with their fingers!!! The fact that I have to ask twice for soap and then it is explained to me that soap is available but the soap dispenser is difficult to use is unacceptable. Firstly, the soap was empty and secondly (if the dispenser was actually full) you shouldn't have to explain to a customer how a soap dispenser works. This shouldn't be quantum physics. Therefore, unfortunately, a very unhygienic eating experience.

Great to have authentic and tasty food in the heart of cologne. We had come from an event at the Lanxess arena and were able to walk over. Tram stop just outside too if needed. Was open late night on Sunday with full menu available. Would definitely go again when visiting next. Highly recommended!

I'm not a vegetarian, but I can recommend it to all the vegetarians and the meat lovers. Yes, cause what they serve you really don't miss the meat. Friends invited me to eat there and I never can say no to that, but didn't want, cause there was no meat. But the dishes tasted so good, that it was for me a surprise I didn't run for meat afterwards. I was fulfilled. That it is good Indian food, you see, because a lot of Indians go there.

A good place with above average food quality. I enjoyed their dosa. But other dishes like kadhai paneer lacked authentic taste. Dosas are good.

If you are craving for South Indian food, this is the place to go

Super delicious Indian food! Just like I know from good restaurants in India. A bit loud, so not really suitable for chatting and hanging out, and it's the best Indian food I've tasted in Cologne! That's what it's worth!

I'm a regular here, and I always love the food (and the people here mainly). But today was taking it a notch higher. I tried the Fried Mushroom and Kaima Idli, and they both tasted HEAVENLY!!! I literally could not stop myself from eating the Fried Mushrooms despite the fact that it just came out of oven 😂 I'm bringing my family next time again for more of these 2 dishes, because this delicious food (easily the chef's master dish) needs to be savoured with family and friends!!! Service here is also great! Thank you Aneesh, Harnek, Kanishka, Anjana, Vishnu, Deeksha, Mithesh, Chaamil, Dev for your amazing friendly service always!! 😊

This was the tastiest Indian food I have ever eaten.

The food was excellent, despite a small misunderstanding because we accidentally ordered in English and then kept switching between languages ​​that were more on our side. What is particularly positive is that I normally cannot tolerate spicy foods at all, but here I was able to enjoy everything without any problems. The huge bread was fantastic and the fried rice was a delight. The Mango Lassi was also available at a very fair price. The only point of criticism: the dishes are unfortunately a bit reminiscent of a prison canteen.

Onion rava masala dosa was on point. Filter coffee hit the spot too.

Worst Dosa ever.. coconut chatani was spoilt.. I asked the manager to check but he simply ignored it. Except package drinking water everything was below average.. not recommended if you are craving for Indian food specially South Indian food.

The food was very tangy and over fermented. The service was very late had to wait for a long time after ordering dosa. The taste was not good at all for Mysore masala dosa it had lot of ginger pickle by which the potato curry flavor was suppressed. Onion uttappam dint have any taste at all other than the over fermented taste. Very disappointing this from Saravan Bhavan.

For the first time in Germany, I felt disappointed visiting a Saravana bhavan. Having visited one in Frankfurt and Berlin, this one was underwhelming. We order two items- mysore masala dosa and Onion uthappam. the dosa had too much ginger chutney inside which was as making it inedible. The waiter simply ignored our feedback as well. The uthappam itself was oily and lacked any flavour. Even the service was quite slow despite having not many customers. Wouldn’t recommend.

The best of South Indian restaurant for me

I ordered Ghee pongal thinking it to be at least close to what we get in Tamil Nadu. It turned out to be very bad. It was very dry and a lot of extra ghee was added on top of the already prepared pongal which made it even worse. Even after informing this to the waiter/staff, they were not courteous enough to take that off from the bill. I would not recommend trying ghee pongal for pongal lovers!!

I visited the restaurant after a year, and I noticed a significant decline in the taste and quality of the dishes. The chutneys didn't taste fresh; they seemed slightly old. I visited around 7 PM, and the oil used for the chili powder in the dosa (chilli podi dosa) was also not good, which affected the overall taste. Additionally, the dosa was not served hot, which further detracted from the experience. Moreover, the washroom was not clean and had an unpleasant smell. There were no hand wash or tissue papers available, which was disappointing. Overall, I was unhappy with the visit, as there was a noticeable drop in both food quality and cleanliness compared to my last experience. I suggest that the restaurant should focus on consistently maintaining or improving both the quality of their food and the cleanliness of their facilities rather than allowing these aspects to decline over time.

1. First visit to any restaurant, I visit the toilet to to understand the maintenance. The first step you make on the underground stairs, a strong stench of the smell of nonveg restaurants (Like velu military I visited in TN) 2. Average quality food (Dosa is okay, sambar is not saravanabhavan sambar I tasted anywhere else). I have been to saravana bhavan Qatar (good), Paris (very good), Frankfurt (Very Good now with new building, previously it was okay), Brussels ( very good for the past 3 years as far I know, because they retain the same chefs sofar), Amsterdam (Terrible before, good now). 3. Price is comparitively higher - Cheese dosa cost 14 euros. 4. Highlight is the cost for hot water. I asked 4 glasses of tap water and paid 12 euros at the end(not even water glasses, normal tea cup size of India). Maintainence Zero and Negative Service. Defenitely not reccomended!!.

Average food, rude staff. Would avoid if possible

The location and service are very good, but the food is not, unfortunately. Quite far from the original tastes that's signature of the Saravana bhavan including the taste of coffee.

Huge variety of options, delicious food, full of flavour. Dosa is a must have. Just be mindful they serve only vegetarian food.

Absolutely delighted by the South Indian served at this restaurant. Located in the heart of Köln markt, this place serves delicious food. I ordered malagapodi dosa along with mango lassi. The ambience resonated with India - as they played a bunch of popular Indian music. The service was quick and Dosa was delicious. The highlight for me was the 'podi' they applied in the Dosa and the chutney(s). It was a blend of spices and garlic packed with tasty potatoes. The portion size was good and I really admire the tomato chutney they serve along with the Dosas. It is delicious! The sambar and coconut chutney were good too. Mango lassi was refreshing and worth the price. Overall, it was a nostalgic trip and a nice experience.

The dosas are incredible, matching the taste and quality of what one gets in India. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. The only advice would be for the staff to not start cleaning the floor while people are still eating and it was 20 mins before closing time.

The staff are really friendly and the food is super delicious! Overall, I have no complaints and I think everyone should give this place a try at least once. Tip: try ordering from 'Too good to go' first and see if you like it. I did that and I am now obesessed!

The food itself is really good and I have no complaints about it. However, the service can be expanded. We were there with five people. The first three main courses came very quickly, the starter only when the first three had almost finished eating and the last two main courses a little later. At the same time, the drink orders took a very long time and when we asked, we were told accusingly that we hadn't ordered anything yet. When the drinks came when we had almost finished, they tried to force us out and reallocate the table without giving us the chance to finish the drinks in peace.

It was a very bad experience at Saravana bhavan cologne.The manager and supervisor behavior very bad. Single star also very high for this one.

First time to try vegetarian Indian food. Nice seating outside, service was quick and friendly. Food was surprisingly good, especially the starter (Rasa Vada). Portions are large (Dosa and Uthappam). Would certainly visit again.

Worst preparation of food,rotis are so thick and unevenly baked.In paneer butter masala curry, lot of turmeric powder is added. Though I am from India I don't recommend this hotel for tourists like me.Wash room is stinky.No toilet paper at all in the toilet.Ambience is very average . Dosa was too much tasty in germany köln .dosa was five sterne. But the gulabjamun quality was very bad not fresh not soft and service was too much bad and tissue availablity is poor . But quality of dosa is good . Please improve ur food quality which is not ur specialitat. Went 2 days in a row, disappointed heavily with food and service there. First day tried Schzewan mushroom and paneer butter cheese - both had almost same fillings and there was no sign of schzewan in named dosa. Next day decided to skip south indian and go for north, malai kofta and veg jal frieze both had exactly same curry with same lime acidic taste and same color yellowish green. I would have expected malai kofta to have orangish curry and sweet taste. Overall disappointed big time. Maybe they are better with basic dosa and idly only.

Authentic South Indian cuisine. If you are looking for a restaurant where it really tastes like India, you will find it here. This can also be seen from the fact that (at the time of my first visit) around 85% of the guests present were Indian. Top food, at top prices. I'd love to come back and bring my friends with me. The dish was extremely spiced because they added a lot of spicy oil sauce on top of the meal. Because of that, we couldn’t feel the taste of each meal. We even weren't asked for the level of spiciness we wanted. The service level is very poor. Just waste of time and money.

The manager claims to be an Indian but he is clearly not and he don't allow Indians inside. The food is good but place is overcrowded. My go to dishes have always been masala dosa, ghee dosa, mysore masala dosa or medu vada. Loved them. The Saravanaa Bhavan Koln is way better than Berlin.

Good food, okay prices good service and beautiful surrounding and atmosphere. I really like the food. It was also by the pricing very okay for central cologne. The drinks are pretty expensive, but this is also normal for central cologne They have a huge menu with many different items and the spice level is good. Normally when you eat Indian cuisine in Europe it’s not that spicy this one’s perfect. The interior is pretty beautiful and modern and when you sit outside, you have a beautiful look on the heumarkt It’s a specially nice if there is any event going on. The stuff is very nice, and even when the restaurant was packed, they served me pretty fast so it’s a good place to go if you are hungry don’t want to eat fast food . Thought they noticed that many people from the Indian Pakistani community eat in this restaurant so it must be at least decent .

Very tasty food, we were there at lunchtime and it wasn't too crowded. The food was brought quickly and everything was very tasty.

My wife and I had dinner here and had stomach pains and nausea that same evening. It was definitely the food. The waitress was very friendly and the service was also good. Unfortunately the food didn't convince us. We both come from Sri Lanka and know Sri Lankan and Indian cuisine very well. We've already tried and tasted different things. We would prefer Ceylon Curry in Leverkusen. Try this out. It is worth it ..

I don't have a single reason to give 4 instead of 5 stars!! It was one of my best experiences for Indian cuisine in Germany !! The restaurant is sufficiently big enough and due to its too good service it is crowded at times ... I'll suggest one may reserve the table prior... The food quality and the taste is just mouthwatering....... Having a huge rush food was served in minimal time...which is really appreciable!! Also the staff is kind. I did like the outside sitting arrangements.... it's too good in summer 😇😍 One shall surely visit Saravana Bhavan if you wanna try Indian cuisine.........specifically south Indian

I recently visited Sharavana Bhavan, and while the food was OK, the service was absolutely terrible. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the staff lacked basic common sense and proper training. Despite there being plenty of free tables, the waiter insisted that our party of three occupy a table meant for two. When we pointed out that we needed more space, our concerns were completely ignored. When our food arrived, it quickly became apparent that there wasn’t enough room on the table to accommodate all the dishes. In the middle of our meal, we were abruptly moved to another table. This table was also insufficient, and soon after, we were asked to move yet again. This constant shifting was intolerable and ruined our dining experience.

They serve frozen food which is overpriced especially for the portions. The only vegetables you will see in your food is peppers. Completely unprofessionally managed as well.

Good location, food was tasty but too spicy although asked for mild, had to order extra sweets at the end, table was missing napkins, and space was clustered but overall that food was good and they had a nice music soundtrack. Server was very kind!

The food was excellent. I would give it 4stars because it was a bit too oily. I am hoping in my next visit the oiliness is less. The staff was really friendly. She was courteous and polite explained to us about the difference between dishes. Special shout out to this staff Ms Anjaly. Additionally, the manager who was young not old person mentioned in the other reviews was really good. I hope that in our next visit we get the same people or someone who has same characteristics of being a good front of staff. We would go again in future for sure.

Absolutely cheeky €5 for a cola

For someone who loves South Indian food, this is the place to go. Food was great and met my expectations, however they could seriously improve the ambience. Loud music is very irritating and they could do away with that. Overall great place to eat in terms of taste, not quite the ambience though.

The food was cold, tasteless and very expensive. What really shocked me was that the plate (vegetable biryani) wasn't decorated, just a bit of yoghurt and onions, you get the feeling of being in prison and then it also costs €15. An outrage! This restaurant should be closed immediately. Pure nonsense!

Rude staff specifically Babloo. They ignore customers intentionally which causes delay and frustration.

I ordered channa bhatura one day and mushroom rogan josh another day with aloo parantha and kulcha. The gravy used for channa masala and mushroom curry was the same. Aloo parantha was good but everything else was mediocre ( tea, kulcha, bhature and both the curries). The size of the bhatura was way tooo big. Overall okay okay. Also hygiene wise, don’t use the washrooms!!!

The restaurant offers an interesting mix of authentic cuisine and fast service, but still has room for improvement. As soon as we entered we were greeted warmly and shown straight to a free table without a reservation, which made us very happy. The service was surprisingly quick. As soon as we placed our order, our drinks and the first dish were on the table in less than five minutes. The kitchen works really quickly. Unfortunately, there is one big disadvantage: the dishes arrive one after the other. This means that one is already eating while the others still have to wait, even though we ordered everything together. This is particularly annoying when you want to eat together. Overall, the restaurant is reasonably clean and the quick service is definitely a plus. However, the coordination of dishes should be improved so that the enjoyment of eating together is not lost.

The lovely indian taste you can find here, nice vegetarian hotel with great indian taste. People working here are very good. The prices are little high and quantity not enough.

Went there with my son. They asked me to pay before to serve the drinks. Beer was flat almost undrinkable. Asked if they had other beers the owner came to me threatening me and telling me to go away. Shame on you

PEPPER AND JUST PEPPER. I would give 0 RATING if possible. Very disappointed with the experience here. Many dishes were overly peppery, except for a few South Indian items like dosa, idli, and vada, which were good. The North Indian and Chinese options weren't great. The presentation and cleanliness could use improvement. I would recommend sticking to the South Indian menu if you visit.
