Saravanaa Bhavan in Frankfurt am Main

This is a review of the restaurant’s food not the restaurant itself. This used to be our go to Indian takeout place (via Wolt). We ordered here the same dishes at least every second week. Quality always varied slightly (which was a good sign, points to stuff being cooked fresh) but was excellent. Unfortunately, quality of our last two orders went completely downhill. The Paneer Butter Masala turned into a super sweet, non-spicy, creamy-watery curry and also the Kadai Paneer Punjabi turned into a dish which has little in common with what it used to be. The food we (now twice) received resembled any typical Indian corner shop with curries matching the German taste of the 90s - but for that 18,50€ for a curry this is way too pricey. Did the chef change??? Happy to adapt the rating once quality returns back to former level. But we will not order for while now.

I have been here few times and have noticed how the quality has gone down significantly. The coffee has more water than milk making it less closer to the south indian coffee, the chinese tastes nothing like chinese. And the service is not that great either - from being slow to not serving the food in the right order to not providing cutlery. Finally the atmosphere, the ambiance is fine but the neighbourhood is extremely bad, the worse in Europe. Really scary to go there in the evening hours.

So far only eaten via To Good To Go, very tasty and good price

This is the birthplace of the Saravana chain of restaurants. The food is affordable, though you may need to wait about 10 minutes to get in due to the queue. What stood out to me was seeing people of all nationalities enjoying authentic Indian food — it really makes the place feel versatile and welcoming.

Communication was catastrophic. They only spoke poor English and no German. The food was okay.

The food was okay, but the service was abysmal. The staff almost exclusively understands and speaks Indian English, some of which is difficult to understand. The service was also disorganized. The appetizer was forgotten, and the rice for the main course arrived before the main course and was cold.

Great experience to find good wholesome food here in Frankfurt. The taste was as good as Home and the quality of the service was high. Great place, will come again… for sure.

The restaurant is characterized by fast service and cleanliness. The staff is friendly and attentive to guests. The atmosphere is lively yet cozy. The dosas are crispy and flavorful. The idli is tender and airy. Sambar and chutney complement each dish wonderfully. The menu is varied and offers many options, from traditional dishes to modern interpretations. There's something for every taste.

Great place for authentic South Indian vegetarian cuisine.

Good place to have authentic South Indian food. I go here when i am craving for a crispy (medu) vada and filter coffee.

A real Indian restaurant, no animals are killed, all dishes are vegetarian and some dishes are also vegan. A feeling of authentic Indian food, everything we ordered was delicious and large and generous portions. Good service - they spoke reasonable English and were nice and efficient. I took one star off because in this location, even in the middle of the day in full daylight, half a meter from us on the street across the window, there was questionable activity taking place (looks like a drug deal) so it is recommended not to sit by the window and in addition the prices felt a bit high for this type of place - popular Indian food, even though it is good and the portions are large. Overall, definitely recommended for vegetarian Indian food lovers - preferably during the day - otherwise the environment outside is even more unpleasant.

Every time I come here - these days mainly because of the good location - I have an argument with Ram... he seems to put system above all else rather than feeling or understanding for the customer - I work in service myself and am used to responding to customer requests and arranging what is feasible. The prices have also gone up drastically - buttermilk, i.e. a bit of yogurt with water and spices, costs over 5 euros for a small glass 😳 of course there is surely a great explanation for that... taxes, right? The only thing is that in the Anjappar Chettinad Restaurant, also on Kaiserstrasse - towards Theaterplatz - the Chole Bhatura is 3 euros cheaper 🤷‍♂️. The fresh, homemade sambaar is definitely better there too. So it's a compromise between price, quality & service versus location & ambience, which I like better in the Savanna Bhavan.

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆ I ate there today and am extremely disappointed. The food was very bad overall – tasteless, poorly prepared, and absolutely inedible. The Shahi paneer and the naan dishes were particularly terrible. The South Indian food was just about okay, but the rest was terrible. Additionally, my son had health problems after the meal, which is absolutely unacceptable to me. For me, this was a very bad experience – I certainly won't be returning and can't recommend this restaurant under any circumstances.

Very authentic Indian food. The price/performance ratio is still good, even though it has become increasingly expensive in recent years. The dosas are excellent, and we're happy to come back again and again.

Very tasty South Indian dosas! The paper masala dosa was particularly good. 🫶 The paneer butter masala with naan and roti was also great! Plenty of available seating, easy ordering via tablet or verbally with a menu :) Delicious food at great prices! Definitely worth a visit! All the best

I ordered onion masala dosa which took a bit longer than normal to come. The dosa had onions chopped like salad - the first dosa arrived with chopped onions without masala. When I asked them to add masala, they added masala to same dosa and by the time I had to eat it, it was cold. When I shared my feedback with the manager, he did not seem too apologetic or even on receiving end. For me, Sarvana is home away from home but I have always had better experience in Berlin than Frankfurt

Great place, food was so delicious even my fiends who love meat and were skeptical loved it all the same! The menu is huge and our portions were very big.

Authentic South Indian food - all vegetarian and super delicious!

Doesn’t qualify to be a good South Indian restaurant. We ordered Bisi Belebath which looked and tasted more like khichdi. The rava masala dosa was not at all crispy and lacked flavors, sambhar and chutneys too average, paneer Manchurian was sweet and not close to the Indian style…. not recommended!

The food was decent and fresh. However, the dining space for two people was very small and felt quite congested, which made it less comfortable.

A consistent delight for authentic South Indian vegetarian cuisine. I have visited Saravana Bhavan several times, and it never fails to impress. Their dosas are the star; perfectly crisp, incredibly flavorful, and, importantly, not heavy on the gut. The experience is always elevated by their fantastic filter coffee, which is a must-try addition. Highly recommended for a genuine and satisfying meal.

Saravanaa Bhavan delivered one of the best experiences I’ve had at an Indian restaurant in Frankfurt. The food felt authentic, very tasty, and notably spicy, with a vibrant, inviting atmosphere. I have visited this place multiple times. During my last visit, I noticed the quality has been degraded and price was increased. As you can see I ordered stuffed naan but there is nothing like stuffed inside it was like papad. Not expect this for 6€.

They are not respectful very rude .Even though I'm south indian they only treat German people rigth or foreign people . They food was moderate I wanted a indian feel food but instead I got a bad headache.

Rats in the Restaurant!!! As a vegetarian and a huge fan of Saravanaa Bhavan, eating a dosa is always the first thing I do whenever I travel. I’ve visited their branches in Amsterdam, Rome, London, and more — and I’ve always had a great experience. But this time, I was deeply disappointed, and honestly, I didn’t expect it. The restaurant was overrun with rats. They were freely roaming throughout the place, especially in the seating area near the kitchen. I tried to point it out to the staff, but shockingly, one of them simply crushed a rat as if to say, “That was the only one.” It was disturbing and unacceptable. I didn’t take any photos, and thankfully I didn’t get sick, but the hygiene situation was appalling — especially for a chain with such a reputation. I truly hope this gets addressed. Cleanliness should never be compromised, especially in a place that serves food and has such a loyal following.

Great food, first time trying it in Berlin. The restaurant in Frankfurt is very nice, even if it's in a dingy area. I think the prices in Berlin were a bit lower, but everything tasted fantastic!

Bad for allergy sufferers. We specifically asked for our food to be without chili or paprika. There was nothing on the menu, but we wanted to be sure. Nevertheless, the food was full of paprika, so we had a severe allergic reaction.

I had a very disappointing experience at Saravana Bhavan, Frankfurt. I ordered a masala dosa first, and then a single parotta. They cleared my dosa plate and brought a tiny parotta plate with almost no kurma. When I asked for more, the staff rudely said they don’t provide kurma with a single parotta and even implied the little kurma given shouldn’t have been served. I still had more than half the parotta left, but out of frustration, I didn’t eat it. The staff made me feel insulted, as if I was asking for free food. The service was extremely rude, and the food itself was not good. Overall, I left frustrated, disrespected, and disappointed. I strongly advise avoiding this restaurant.

I'm a big fan of Indian cuisine. Here, in the form of a chain, and vegetarian, too. I was a bit skeptical, but wrongly so. Very tasty, well-seasoned, fast service. Plus, a lovely ambiance with a view of the kitchen. The only thing missing is an outdoor terrace. The food also attracts a lot of Indians, which is certainly a good sign. I'd go back anytime.

I recently visited this restaurant and was quite disappointed with the overall experience, especially compared to my previous visits. 1. Mysore Masala Dosa – The taste was average and definitely not up to the usual standard. On top of that, it wasn’t served hot, which took away from the experience. 2. Mango Lassi – This was the highlight of the meal. It was very good, refreshing, and perfectly prepared. 3. Medhu Vada – Extremely disappointing. The vada was so hard that it was impossible to eat. Even after informing the staff, there was no response or attempt to address the issue, which reflects poorly on customer service. 4. South Indian Meals – The food itself was good, but the service was painfully slow, making it difficult to enjoy the meal.

The best thing to happen in Germany for south-indian food:) Everything is absolutely delicious! We ordered the mysore masala dosa , chole bhatura and chilly panner. The quantity is excellent! Never happens that we we visit Frankfurt and don‘t eat here (unless its monday and its closed:)

Wish I could give this place 0 stars. I am from south india and let me tell you that this was the worst. But we wanted something near the train station so we came here. Big mistake. Horrible service, staff dont even look at you, they act like they don't want you there and like they don't want to be there either. Waiters dont even look at you or say anything. The main courses of food came separately, almost 10 minutes gap within each other. Bad food, dosa was undercooked, chutney tasted like it was about to go bad. We also got a special thali (costed 22.5 euros!) which barely had enough rice to eat to with the daal and curries which were ok, but some were too salty and simply uneatable. Everything we were served seemed like it was made yesterday. Nothing was fresh, it wasn't even hot! Imagine eating lukewarm pooris and cold rice. Simply yuck. Total waste of money because it wasn't even filling. Totally do not recommend anyone to go there. Hope they shut down. You are better off going to the Asian supermarket a few buildings away, buying the ingredients of whatever you want to eat, and making it in your house. But that's not the point of a restaurant! Total waste of money and time. We could have eaten such filling and better tasting food instead of this crap. Please shut down your store. You clearly just want to make money and don't care about people enjoying the food or having a good experience.

It's good vegetarian food but bit expensive if compared with others

We had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. We were hungry and placed our order, but ended up waiting for almost half an hour. During this time, I asked the waiter three times how much longer it would take, but no one bothered to check or give us a proper response. Finally, I approached the manager when I noticed that people who came after us were receiving their food. Unfortunately, his attitude was very casual, and he didn’t seem to care about the situation. Only then did they realize that our order was never even entered into their system. After this frustrating experience, we decided to leave. What made it worse was that no one apologized or even said “thank you.” The overall service was extremely unprofessional and disappointing.

We had to call for staff several times. The four main courses arrived at different times. One dish had two pieces, one of which was very hard and difficult to bite into. The second main course was served in two pieces, which was unpleasant. Overall, a disappointing experience with poor service and inconsistent quality.

There is difference between "Wada" and "Mysore Bonda". I ordered a Mysore Bonda, A spherical fried dumpling, made of Maida, Buttermilch, Ginger and other spices. On the other hand, Wada, a roughly fluffy fried donut, is made of Urid Dal batter, comparably hard. Now Saravanaa Bhavan' waiter comes with a Spherical fried ball with 2 Chutneys. Excited me, take a bite and it's a Mysore Wada. WRONG BATTER, WRONG SHAPE AND WRONGLY ARGUED when asked if they made a mistake of making Mysore Bonda with Wada batter. Well, i did not yet ask for refund or i did not deny to pay. All i asked is, if they made a mistake. But their South indian sentiments got hurt, and argued that Mysore Bonda recipe is not known to many and what they have is Certified Saravanaa Bhavan Recipe. Thank you Saravanaa Bhavan for the excellent recipes. I should have understood that doomsday entered your Domain the day you rebranded, relocated and added Cheese Dosa to your Menu. You disappointed a Karnataka & a Telangana person by your abominated Wadonda. Please do not call it Mysore Bonda. You can call it Saravanaa Bonda, The Legend Bonda or Urvashi Bonda.

Unfortunately there is no option of zero stars. So i have to give one. Please no one go to eat! Especially when you visiting to frankfurt Germany. worst service ever. We were came from UK and tried food. Staff was very rude. Throw the bill on our face. And food tasted aww🤮. We order two paneer dosas and all are too salty. When complained about this twice we get no response. We also ordered cauliflower manchurian and veg noodles. No cutlery, no plates served to us. If any manager or owner look into my review. I hope i get better reply.

I am trying hard to forget this horrible experience. I will double check recent reviews for next Restuarant visit, not only Saravananaa Bhavan, that’s the impact. I may not be able to visit Saravanaa Bhavan anymore. Food was not at all good (Medhu vada, Ghee masala dosa, Tee & Chana bhatura). Food served plates were not good enough. Etc,. Etc It’s not authentic saravanaa bhavan anymore, please change the name 🙏.

It will be the last visit for us. For someone who hails from south India, he knows the food served here has nothing to do with the authenticity and quality of a traditional south Indian food. We had Parotta ordered and to our surprise we got 'wheat' parotta which was not mentioned explicitly in the menu that it will be made from full wheat. And it tasted like someone would try for the first time at home 😅 a flop story. Sambar for Dosa was below average. I wonder how people still flock to this sorry restaurant and I hope they find other rich alternatives in and around Frankfurt.

A Warning to Visitors: A Disappointing Experience at Saravana Bhavan, Frankfurt To those considering a visit to Saravana Bhavan in Frankfurt, I feel it's my duty to share my recent and highly disappointing experience. As a frequent visitor to the Saravana Bhavan branches in London (Southall and Wembley), I was excited to find a branch during my holiday in Germany. We took a €25 taxi ride with high hopes of enjoying the quality vegetarian food I've come to expect from the brand. Unfortunately, what we received was a culinary disaster. My wife and I both ordered the special thali, hoping to sample a variety of their dishes. However, we were met with several significant issues: * Excessive Saltiness: A large number of the dishes in the thali were so salty they were completely inedible. * Spoiled Rice: The rice served was clearly spoiled and emitted a foul smell, something you could both see and smell instantly. * Soggy Papadams: The papadam was not crisp as it should be, but rather soft and soggy, resembling a chapati. When we raised these concerns with the manager, his response was unprofessional and unhelpful. He claimed to have tasted the food in the morning and insisted it was fine, only conceding that the rice might have been "a bit overcooked." He did not take our concerns seriously and showed a complete lack of professionalism, refusing to even taste the food himself. As a former chef, I am confident in saying that the quality of the food we were served was not only poor but potentially dangerous. I would guarantee that if this food were tested in a lab, it could be proven to cause food poisoning. To those who choose to visit this restaurant, I wish you good luck. To the Saravana Bhavan franchise holders, you should be concerned. The poor quality of food and management at this location is a serious threat to your brand's reputation. In my opinion, this restaurant only survives due to a lack of competition in the area. I would not eat there again, even if the food were offered for free. Save your time, your money, and your health.

Reducing my review to 1 star. Picked up Idli's today. This is how they look (notice the black spot). My husband found an insect as well. Taste was worst. We have loved this restaurant, but our experience with pick ups has pretty much always been bad.

How can a restaurant famous for making dosa make a simple masala dosa so soggy and tasteless with slimy potatoes with no seasoning.

Dear Management, I recently dined at your restaurant for both lunch and dinner. The lunch, consisting of South Indian full meals, was delicious and left me satisfied. Encouraged by this experience, I returned for dinner and ordered a Chinese dish. Unfortunately, the Chinese dish was disappointing and did not meet the same standard. I suggest focusing on your strengths and reconsidering the inclusion of Chinese dishes on the menu. Additionally, I would like to address the service provided by the manager, Mr. Ram. While the ground staff was exceptional, welcoming, and attentive, Mr. Ram’s demeanor was less than welcoming. His lack of engagement and focus on his mobile phone made customers feel unattended. I recommend that he greets customers with a smile and shows genuine interest in their experience to enhance the overall service quality. It might also be beneficial to place a complaint or suggestion box at your restaurant to gather customer feedback more effectively. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as I appreciate the efforts of your ground staff and wish to see the restaurant thrive. Audience to note: Try Only Sarvana Bhavan Menu not Chines at all !

Food was good but the service is pretty bad.

The food is great ☆ but don't sit by the window 🫣 ... when you look into Frankfurt's train station district, you can see... the Frankfurt train station district 🤷🏻‍♂️

The food was ok, but honestly the service really disappointed me. I get that it’s a busy city like Frankfurt, but basic courtesy was missing. No “thank you,” no “you’re welcome,” and drinks were just handed over without a tray or even asking. It just felt a bit careless. Not expecting 5-star treatment, but a little warmth would’ve made a big difference.

I had been to other sarvana bhavans and was really looking forward to having a good time with good food here, but I was really disappointed by the service as well as the taste of food. Some of the staff were really rude, especially the tall fact guy with little beard on the face and the quality of food was not as per the standards of Saravana Bhavan or at least how I had in other saravanaa bhavan... I will definitely not recommend this place at least in Frankfurt

I discovered and fell in love with this vegetarian restaurant chain from India in Dubai. Authentic "South Indian Veg" cuisine, but now they seem to be adding Chinese dishes as well. I recommend the Masala Dosa (a kind of lentil pancake filled with mashed potatoes), previously Gobi 65 (baked cauliflower florets). Everything is affordable, although it's much cheaper in Dubai.

Saravana Bhavan is our absolute favorite restaurant when it comes to authentic South Indian cuisine! Every time we eat there, we feel like we're on a mini culinary journey to South India. The dishes are fresh, full of flavor, and prepared with great attention to detail; from crispy dosas to spicy sambar to fluffy idli, everything is authentic and delicious. We particularly appreciate the wide selection of vegetarian specialties and the consistently authentic preparation, just as you would expect from South India. The filter coffee is also a real treat and perfectly rounds off the experience. The staff is always friendly, attentive, and creates a pleasant atmosphere, whether for a quick lunch or a long family dinner. We come regularly and really enjoy it; for anyone who loves authentic South Indian cuisine, Saravana Bhavan is a must!

It has no taste, the sauces are to be thrown away

Unfortunately, it wasn't a good experience today; I simply wanted a second flatbread to go with the meal because it's simply not filling, and I had to pay for two full meals. And it was the wrong flatbread because the waitress barely understood anything. Over 28 euros for food on steel trays, thank you.

Update July 2025: Changing to one star. This restaurant is trying to delete old reviews under defamation. They tried two times and failed both times. This shows that they try to remove genuine reviews from past. Updated 09/2019: From 5 stars to 3 stars Recently they increased the amount of oil in food and the prices. Our dosa was full of oil and the complete plate was shining with the oil. After first bite which was so horrible and full of oil, we told staff about the it and they were like it next time we will take care. 12/2014: Tried this place on a New Year Eve, Restaurant was fully packed. Authentic South Indian Food. I had food twice on the day of arrival and on the day of Departure (I was in Frankfurt for 2 days :P ). Best Location. My favorite Paneer Dosa

Perfect place with a lot of choice !

I ordered dosa, idly, and Manchurian. Unfortunately, the batter for the dosa and idly didn’t seem fresh—I could clearly taste it. Additionally, the Manchurian was excessively oily, and the flavor was overwhelmingly tangy, likely due to the sauce used. I did bring these issues to the attention of the serving staff, but they weren’t very helpful. Overall, I’m disappointed and feel this experience was not worth the money, so I’m rating it one star.

Long waiting time outside restaurant no respect for customers waiting in sun. Quality of food not up to mark

The atmosphere of the restaurant is quite nice and the staff were friendly and attentive, which we really appreciated. However, the food was a major letdown. I ordered the North Indian thali, and unfortunately, nothing tasted fresh. The parathas were undercooked when first served, so we sent them back to be reheated — but even after that, they didn’t taste right. The rice and all the sabjis seemed like they were made long before and just reheated. The flavors were bland, and the overall taste was very poor. A big disappointment, especially considering the potential this place has with its service and ambiance.

This is a 100% taste reliable restaurant. Customer can be sure, the taste is for sure the best! Saravana Bhavan defines the taste of South Indian dish!

Extremely good Indian food. The many Indian guests can indeed be taken as a hint! Kitchy decor but you’ll survive.

The food was cheap and the portions were good, but the taste was bad and I dont know if I would call it authentic at this point. The staff were also a bit rude and preoccupied with other stuff, and it was a hassle getting their attention to ask for sides. Overall, a bad experience that I did not experience from such a famous chain. Taste so bad I have to make this review, because I was also misguided by all the positive comments.

I had masala dosa and veg uttapam.. I would given 5 star if that uttapam was up to mark... It is just thick dosa and adding big junk of vegetables.. sorry just 2 vegetables(carrots,beans)..what that vegetables size we can cook proper curry.very disappointed. I would suggest no one should order uttapam there. But service was best

I visited in 2019 and gave 1 star review for their food quality and service. Now these guys are threatening me for defermation case if I don't delete my 1 star review and this is not just me they are threatening to all who gave low rating or 1 star. I have tried to reach out through mail but no response. Kindly avoid such places 🙏

I ordered chilli onion dosa and they literally put green chilli pieces (pic below). Who on earth eats chillis that way ? And the staff is extremely rude. And stooping even lower, they reported my earlier exact same review i wrote using a different account reporting it as "defamation", if they do it again to this review, I will make it my primary duty to post it again using a different account. Such a shame on you sarvana bhavan ! Put such efforts in making your service better and not hunt for bad reviews and report them. You guys have no rights to obstruct free speech.

Food was of poor quality. Not hygienic.

Ordered mini idly ghee sambar for takeaway. Taste was good and better than expected. But there was no ghee in it. They should give the items correctly what they are charging for. The ambience is nice and the staffs are quick. If you are around Frankfurt, then do try it.

One of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. The food was extremely oily and lacked freshness. The staff were cold and unwelcoming, making the entire visit uncomfortable. Definitely not the kind of service or quality you’d expect from such a well-known name. Not going back.

The food is top-notch as always – fresh, delicious, and of truly excellent quality. Unfortunately, this impression is regularly marred by poor service and a very inflexible service mentality. This time, I ordered online for pickup because I couldn't find a parking space. Five minutes later, a parking space did open, so I went in and asked if I could eat my meal there. The answer: No – because it was an online order. I even offered to order more food there and asked them to simply cancel the online order. That would have actually brought them more revenue and tips – but even for that, they weren't willing to press "cancel." It's a shame. Anyone who would rather forgo revenue and customer satisfaction with such a rigid attitude shows that good service isn't a priority here. The food remains excellent, but the service and customer friendliness: unfortunately, disappointing.

Absolutely the worst South Indian food I’ve ever had tasteless, poorly prepared, and served with shockingly bad attitude. The hygiene and quality are questionable at best. What's more disturbing is that after leaving an honest 1-star review, I received a notice that my comment was reported for "defamation" clearly an attempt to silence criticism instead of improving standards. This is unacceptable. Instead of addressing customer concerns, they seem to weaponize legal threats to hide negative feedback. If you're looking for real South Indian cuisine, do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. It’s an insult to both Indian and international customers.

A very good, authentic Indian restaurant. They have a large selection of extremely good dozas, puri, and other breads. It's more of a South Indian dish, which isn't really available in Germany, and it offers a completely different side of Indian cuisine.

Very poor quality and food is no where near authentic Indian. Avoid this restaurant at all cost.

Now that you complain to Google to remove well balanced review. Word of mouth always spreads da. Don't fool indians

Food was amazing, staff was extremely rude, service was poor.

I visited this restaurant during my recent trip to Europe and, unfortunately, it did not meet expectations. The service was quite disappointing, the staff came across as unwelcoming and inattentive. Additionally, the quality of the food was disasppointing. ONE MORE ALARMING THING is that a friend of mine received a defamation warning from Google after leaving an honest review. If this is how feedback is being handled, it raises serious questions.

Food is tasty as per their legacy big problem is leaving one or two staff member other team is not very welcoming including the manager or person on counter. Great you guys are having a too much popularity but please work on attitude and be more service oriented. Visited 6 times in last two weeks food is tasty all the 6 time but bitter service experience twice.

Nice place. Crowded on weekends. Plan to visit before peak hours
