Ristorante Pizzeria Bei Mario in München

We ate here two days ago and I want to share my experience. When we received the menu and wanted to order right away, the waiter reacted very rudely and annoyed, as if it were a problem that we already knew what we wanted. He said, without greeting us, just accusingly, "Are you ready yet?" The other waiters who brought our food later, however, were friendly and polite. I ate a pizza and immediately after eating it, I felt very nauseous. I hadn't eaten anything else that day, so I'm sure it was from that pizza. The nausea was so severe that it lasted for two days, accompanied by all the typical symptoms of food poisoning. The next morning, I was extremely weak, my legs were shaky, I had chills, and I had to take medication to feel better. I normally tolerate food well and eat at various restaurants in Munich almost every day, but something like this has never happened to me before. I want to share this incident here so that other guests can be careful.

The boss is always in a good mood, the food and service are excellent, and the prices are still fair for Munich. Keep up the good work!

Not recommended. I ordered pizza and drinks. We wanted to eat in and were given drinks in glasses. The waiter brought the pizzas in boxes, and he was surprised that we wanted to eat in and said the prices were different. We were asked to leave. Unpleasant service.

I was at this restaurant today with two friends. When we walked in, I politely asked the waiter: "Can we sit on the terrace?" He immediately started saying loudly: "Street? Which street? Autobahn?" – we didn't understand what he meant at all. Then he just said, "Come with me," and took us to a table. Shortly afterward, I heard him laughing with another waiter and saying that we were probably heading for some street. I then addressed him directly and told him that I had said "on the terrace." He just said he had misunderstood me. Later, when he was listing our drinks, he acted as if we didn't speak German. He spoke very slowly and exaggeratedly clearly, even though we all study here in Munich and understand German well. That was clearly disrespectful and discriminatory. Then he asked where we were from. When I answered him where we were from, he joked about our origins, "Well, maybe you'd like some vodka?" When one of us said she wanted to think about it, he sarcastically said he'd leave us a menu "to think about it" and asked if we wanted to order anything at all. I then ordered a takeaway pizza, my friend a tea, and we left. His entire demeanor was loud, mocking, and simply disrespectful. Other guests probably noticed this, too. We felt totally uncomfortable and wouldn't go there again. That's really not okay for such an international restaurant in Munich. At the end, we received a receipt that stated that you could give feedback on the service. I wanted to rate the waiter myself, but the QR code simply wouldn't scan.

The pasta was really delicious, even if the portions of our choice were a bit smaller considering the price. The taste was excellent, though, and the staff was super attentive. Definitely worth trying!

Nice pizzeria with a lovely outdoor area. The pizza tastes very good and the service is friendly. The beer was okay and cost €5.80, but you can get much better beer for less money in Munich. The wine was also very expensive and came in a broken carafe, which I found annoying. The pizza was good.

We've been going to Mario's for 40 years. The pizza is one of the best! What's also great is that you can request a pizza with two different toppings.

Unfortunately, I rarely get a pizza as bad as this one... you definitely won't find authentic Italian pizza etc. here! My tip: only come here if you like cheesy messes and soggy dough.

My husband and I are frequent diners at top-tier restaurants worldwide and never hesitate to spend on quality food and service. We went for an early dinner around 5.30pm and enjoyed a tomato soup, caprese salad, and a pizza — everything was tasty and well-prepared. However, the experience took a disappointing turn with the dessert. Their tiramisu is said to be quite popular, and since I’m pregnant and they mentioned it was made without eggs, I decided to try it. Unfortunately, what was served was clearly a pre-sliced, day-old portion — dry edges, stale texture, and far from the fresh quality we expect, especially from a restaurant of this reputation. Despite politely pointing this out, the Turkish waiter — who understood both my Turkish and my husband’s native German — flatly denied it. He didn’t offer to replace it or even acknowledge the concern, simply repeating, “It’s definitely fresh.” In any high-standard restaurant, a genuine concern, especially from a pregnant guest, would at least be met with a replacement or some understanding. What made it worse was seeing the dessert counter on the way out — there was a large, fresh tray of tiramisu, untouched and visibly superior to the three dry, plated portions left from the day before. It’s disappointing that these were knowingly served to us. I sincerely regret leaving a tip for this experience. And I’m especially disappointed by the server’s reluctance to connect over our shared language, or to take accountability. We won’t be returning, and I cannot recommend this place.

If you are nearby, definitely go and enjoy the delicacies in the charming local atmosphere. Recommendation: antipasti della vitrina, pizza quatro stagioni and panna cotta. A true pleasure.

The ambience is a bit old, but fits the atmosphere of the restaurant very well. Down-to-earth and original. The design of the menu also fits the style very well. The food was very good and the price-performance ratio was also more than reasonable. I can recommend it without reservation for anyone who wants to eat typically Italian food.

Spontaneously went for lunch, it was very full. Still got a table. Food arrived very quickly and pizza was very good. The lunch menu is also very cheap for Munich.

Very good large pizza, I thought the €14.50 for my Proschutto was reasonable. The dough was super fluffy and the staff was quick and friendly. The decor and atmosphere was also very accurate. This is how you imagine a good Italian :)

The atmosphere was very pleasant. The staff was very experienced and friendly. However, I found the meat options inadequate in pizza options. That's why I ate it with 4 cheeses. However, with the recommendation of the waiter, we ate baby turbot. This was so legendary. The potatoes that came with it were delicious. I recommend these.

The best pizza I've ever eaten! Big and such a delicious, fluffy edge! And then happy hour at lunchtime! Great ambience - beautiful tables and the pizza oven, which is worth seeing! It couldn't be better!

Always an institution that you can always rely on!

Yesterday evening we visited the Pizzeria Bei Mario in Schwabing and had an overall pleasant evening. The cozy ambience with a nostalgic flair invites you to linger. The pizza sizes and toppings met the standard you are used to from good pizzerias. We found the prices for wine to be a bit overpriced at €5.50 to €7.00 for 0.1l. For dessert, the tiramisu was made with too much mascarpone cream for our taste, while the Zuppa Inglese was very tasty. Parking spaces are rare; Finding a seat right in front of the restaurant requires a lot of luck. The service was very nice, friendly and attentive. All in all a nice place to stay.

I have known Mario for over 40 years. His daughter Marie Lisa has been running the ristorante for about 6 years. The food is very good, a lot of waiters who have still been working in the Ristorante for years, my favorite waiter Athanasios. A rogue. However, prices have risen very high in recent years. However, it has to be said that Mario also employs a lot of waiters and cooks. Of course they also have to be paid for. But you don't go to Mario's every week. I love the rustic, classic, original atmosphere. Certainly not for everyone. But I like it very much. I would love to come back

Went to the pizza place for the first time yesterday. It was my husband's birthday and he really wanted to go. We drove 90 minutes by car and I have to say I'm really disappointed. The pizza looked great, but after the second slice I couldn't eat any more because the ham tasted sour. I tried my husband's pizza with cheese and it tasted normal. We took the pizza home and my husband ate a slice later and then said he understood what I meant. He couldn't have continued eating them either. It's a shame a lot of money wasted for nothing. I also had dessert which was very good.

I ordered pizza to pick up today. When I came to pick up one of the two pizzas I was given the wrong topping. I didn't make a big deal about it and said that it wasn't a problem and that I would take the pizza as is. The gentleman at the counter was unsympathetic and annoyed the whole time. When we went out he shouted an insult at us in a medium voice in Italian, I don't think he thought we would understand him, but we did :-) I think it's a shame because the pizza itself is good, but with behavior like that I can happily do without it.

Great food, the oldest wood-fired pizzeria in Munich. Ambience nice.

Mario has a great history and is still family owned. As you can see from the review, I like it there. Waiters are funny, the ambience inside is a bit retro, the inner courtyard towards Amalien Passage is super beautiful. My perhaps somewhat surprising observation and opinion about food: Mario brought the pizza to Munich. The restaurant also stands out a bit for pizzas, which are very large. Personally, I think that all the classic second main courses there are now much better. Both the meat and the fish courses, which are generally excellent. Last week we had the sea bream in a potato coating on spinach - great! The lunch menu (that day with salmon) was also very good. Salads were very decent. Therefore: reward yourself and dare to try the classic Secondi Piatti. You won't regret it :)

Ambience like 50 years ago, uncomfortable. Pizza from the wood-fired oven, delicious as always, thick toppings and fast, attentive service. Short walk to the university subway. Reservations on weekends are recommended.

Italian owned ! Got an Uber from my hotel about €12. I had the pizza with mozzarella di buffala and my boyfriend had the Salami pizza, both really good ! Beer n' pizza was perfect ! they're open late even on weekends, I recommend it!

The food was good, Rigatoni alforno was well seasoned. The pizzas look delicious too. You can definitely go there. The atmosphere of the beer garden and the interior is also really nice.

Excellent napolitan style pizzas, extremely fast service on delivering food, and getting bill or anything during stay went expectionally smoothly the waiters can handle the rush and multiple customers. We were really satisfied with the experience, highly recommended.

Here we are talking about the very high art of baking pizza. A symphony of dough, the right temperature and baking time so that the topping remains juicy. A delight for the palate. Added to this is the service, simply a brilliant atmosphere, with humor and professionalism. I can only recommend “at Mario” to everyone.

This restaurant was one of the best restaurants at the time of its owner, and when I first arrived in Munich, I went to it every day for more than 16 years. But unfortunately, after the death of the restaurant owner, the restaurant became in great decline, and there is no interest in the customers. I used to like going to Mario's often, the inner courtyard is really nice. However, today's experience was not. I wanted to grab a bite to eat with my 3 year old before heading home. Not everyone has to be child-friendly, but I expect it from an Italian. First they wanted to put us in the last corner, in a separate room where there wasn't a single person. Reason: “You just eat and then leave anyway.” Oh what… When we wanted to leave, “Mann” came to his senses and we were able to have the table at the exit. Children's chair only available upon request after the food was there. When it came to the painting supplies that I took, I was informed that these were not for guests. Man man man… so not child friendly, frightening.

The service in this restaurant is non-existent! We had reserved a table, which the waiter then assigned to us on site. After that, obviously no one was interested in us anymore. Even though the waiters saw us all sitting down and some of them didn't even have anything to do, they ignored us for 40 minutes! An absolute disgrace! I can only advise everyone not to visit this restaurant and will spread the word about it.

It was a nice evening at Mario's. Reservation worked great, we were allowed to choose another table on site. We all really enjoyed the food, the atmosphere is cozy, relaxed, a bit noisy after 11 p.m. 😄 Our service was a bit confused and slow, but the Raffaele was great. There is a large beer garden and a few tables in front of the restaurant where smokers meet. A tip: order drinks about an hour before you want to go and pay straight away, otherwise you'll have to wait forever for the bill, as a lot of young people just line up at the checkout. But we'll be back.

Four or five stars for Mario? There will be five - because the pizza is definitely worth five stars. And that – for Munich! for Schwabing! – almost acceptable prices. And the service was quick and friendly. Only the ambience of Munich's first pizzeria (1966!) has remained the same since the year it was founded... ... but now it's downright “retro-cool” again! And complaining about it now would be a bit unfair after the lovely time we spent here. So: 5 stars! Fully deserved!

Yes, the shop has history and everyone knows it “from the past”. The pizza is okay, other mothers now also have beautiful daughters and I think the prices are quite high. Spezi over 5 euros for 0.4 and the beer at just under 6 euros... well... Especially when it comes to drinks, no one needs to come to me about VAT and such. Service was quick and friendly.

One of our regular restaurants. As a family we always like to eat pizza and pasta here. Very nice and attentive service, even when it's busy. On our last visit we had bruscetta and a mixed salad as a starter. And homemade scialatielli and seafood risotto as mains. As usual, both dishes were very tasty and generously portioned. Highly recommended.
