We visited Jan for dinner (two people) in January 2026. Expectations were naturally very high, but unfortunately they were not fully met. That said, there were several positive aspects worth mentioning, and I believe that with some improvements the experience could truly match the restaurant’s reputation. The food was certainly very good and the quality of the ingredients was excellent. However, it was not a particularly surprising or memorable culinary experience that could compensate for some of the issues during the evening. The service staff were extremely kind and friendly, creating a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, less formal than what is sometimes found in other fine-dining restaurants — something we actually appreciated. The main area that could be improved is the service execution. During the evening a few noticeable mistakes occurred which, given the level of the restaurant and the price of the experience, stand out more. For example, we were initially seated at the wrong table and asked to move after about 10 minutes, after we had already started our drinks. In addition, since we ordered the wine pairing, on two occasions the wine did not arrive with the corresponding dish and we had to ask for it. This makes it difficult to fully enjoy the pairing as intended. My impression was that this had more to do with the organization of the service and the distribution of roles rather than the effort of the staff themselves (for example, the sommelier was also frequently serving dishes). The kindness and friendliness of the team were genuinely appreciated, but with tighter coordination the service could improve significantly. The interior design is also very minimal and modern, with contemporary music played at a relatively high volume. This is obviously a stylistic choice, but it contributes to an atmosphere that feels slightly less “special” than one might expect for an experience at this level. The final bill was around €600 per person (2 tasting menus, 1 wine pairing, and 1 additional Wagyu course). The issue is not the price itself, but the perceived value — at the moment the overall experience does not feel fully aligned with the cost. Overall, we still appreciated several aspects of the evening — particularly the quality of the ingredients and the genuine kindness of the staff — and with some improvements in service coordination the experience could truly reflect the ambition and level of the restaurant.

5* Deluxe! I was invited to a set menu dinner, and it was a truly special culinary experience. Each of the 15 courses was a pure delight. Jan Hartwig and his team are virtuosos in Michelin-starred cuisine. The entire service team was incredibly friendly, attentive, and thoughtful. Even before making the reservation, I was able to specify any dietary restrictions or intolerances, which were handled with great care and consideration. The wine recommendations were also excellent, and the exquisite spirit was a must, providing the perfect finishing touch to a wonderful evening at Restaurant JAN. I'm already looking forward to my next invitation to the "Laboratory of Love"!

We had a truly wonderful evening at Restaurant JAN. From the very first moment, it was clear that the highest standards are applied here. Each course conveyed a palpable emotion; every dish told its own story. What was particularly impressive was how clear and understandable the ideas behind the creations remained: even a seemingly simple meatloaf sandwich or a goulash was interpreted at a three-Michelin-star level, yet still clearly recognizable. This is precisely what makes the menu such an extraordinary experience. We would especially like to commend the service: attentive, warm, and so perfectly choreographed that every move was precise. You don't just feel welcome, but truly cared for. We will definitely be back!

Jan is a true magician in his field. Everything about this restaurant is perfect. The menu selection, the wine pairings, and the delicious juices are all exquisite. They offer a tasting menu consisting of seven main courses and numerous side dishes, ensuring you leave feeling thoroughly satisfied! Each course is a masterpiece – both visually and in terms of taste. I don't think I've ever eaten as well as I did at Jan Hartwig's. If you can afford it, or are willing to treat yourself, this restaurant should definitely be on your bucket list! A big thank you for the absolutely perfect and unobtrusive service! This evening will remain a cherished memory for a long time. 😁

This experience can be summed up quite simply: overwhelming! What arrives on your plate here is not only culinary excellence but also a visual masterpiece. The aesthetic presentation of the dishes, combined with the authentic taste of classic cuisine—in a perfectly balanced ratio—is almost unbelievable. Here, tradition isn't just referenced, but elevated to a new level with sensitivity and precision. Another highlight was the service. Because of my height of 113 cm (45 inches), I was offered a seat riser without being asked and with great care, which I gratefully accepted. Particularly impressive: it was made of the same fabric as the regular seating, so there was no visible difference. This attention to detail and this dedication to perfection are truly remarkable. The crowning touch was the personal farewell from Jan Hartwig himself. The server even held us back briefly because he was so eager to say goodbye personally. Wow! At this point, I have to say: there's practically no room for improvement. A restaurant visit that will be remembered – in every respect.

After our last – admittedly critical – review, we returned to the restaurant for lunch. It's all the more gratifying to say that our feedback was taken very seriously. This time, everything was perfect. We sat at a wonderful table, the atmosphere was quiet and pleasant – exactly what you'd expect from a 3-star establishment. No distracting background noise, no constant coming and going behind our backs. We could focus entirely on the food and the moment. The cuisine was once again outstanding – finely tuned, creative, and of the highest culinary standard. Every course was prepared with great care. The service was also attentive, warm, and highly professional. It was clear that our criticism wasn't simply noted, but genuinely taken to heart. We were very pleased and will gladly return.

It's impressive how perfectly food can taste and be presented. A truly top-notch culinary experience for both the eyes and the palate. It was fascinating to watch how calmly and harmoniously everyone worked together in the semi-open kitchen, without much fuss or fanfare. Anyone seeking a restaurant experience of perfection will find it here. The only slight drawback: The staff was attentive, friendly, and professional throughout, but we repeatedly asked if we could enjoy the meal in a more relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately, this wasn't addressed at the beginning, which then clashed with our aperitif and wine pairing. We would have appreciated a little more communication and tact.

What a fantastic evening we had at JAN! The food was incredibly delicious and beautifully presented, and the very friendly service and perfectly paired wines were also wonderful. My only criticism: the background music (a mix of 80s and 90s hits, very random) didn't really suit the food, in my opinion. But, of course, that's just a matter of taste.

We were incredibly lucky to spend Valentine's Day at Jan Hartwig's restaurant, JAN. The entire evening was like a perfectly orchestrated symphony! From the warm welcome and the wonderful ambiance to the host's genuine hospitality, everything was perfect. The menu was absolutely flawless. From the very first bite, you embark on a journey through childhood memories, modern cuisine, and culinary artistry. The dishes are almost too beautiful to eat. But that's precisely why we came. The signature dish, "Sea Urchin Louise," a tribute to his daughter, as we were told, was world-class. The non-alcoholic beverage pairings were also perfectly complementary to the dishes. We had a wonderful evening and will definitely be back! A very special thank you to the entire team, who consistently impressed with their warm professionalism, and to the chef himself. You gave us an unforgettable evening. Thank you so much! 🫶

A wonderful experience with so much light, but also a little bit of shadow. So many positive things have been said in the reviews here that it's really difficult to add anything that hasn't already been said. We spent four hours on February 12, 2026, in this wonderful restaurant and were pampered by a fantastic kitchen and service team of almost 20 people. The three Michelin stars are more than deserved, and we enjoyed every second. Not only is Jan Hartwig's cuisine a dream, but his staff also go to great lengths to make the evening unforgettable for their guests. Two small things cost us a (half) star in our rating, and we feel it's important to mention them here in the interest of potential improvements: 1. The music wasn't really well chosen (of course, that's a matter of taste), but simply too loud. Especially in the early evening. Having a conversation was almost a challenge. Nothing against music, but it shouldn't dominate the atmosphere. 2. After four hours, it was time to pay for the unforgettable meal. We were extremely surprised not to be presented with a bill, but rather a receipt labeled "INFO" with the comment "This is not a bill." We don't want to make any accusations, but such interim bills, which can be easily and seamlessly canceled in the point-of-sale system, are common in the restaurant industry, especially where the payment of sales tax is to be avoided. A restaurant of Jan's caliber shouldn't provoke such suspicions, but rather issue proper bills immediately upon payment. It would be nice if we didn't have to repeat this experience on our next visit to Jan's (which will certainly come). Otherwise, dear Jan Hartwig: "Keep it up!"

Culinary-wise, the restaurant operates at a near-absolutely top-tier level. The dishes are highly precise, creative, and exhibit only minimal flaws – the food itself is clearly "top of the notch." The service is generally attentive, though noticeably more casual than one would expect from a classic Michelin-starred restaurant of this caliber. A third portion of bread was unfortunately forgotten, which is noticeable given the restaurant's ambition and price point. Our table was located directly by the door and the aisle, meaning that servers were constantly walking right past it. In addition, there was a speaker directly above the table, blaring music. Furthermore, the side of my companion's table was insufficiently lit, so the dishes didn't appear as visually appealing as they should. Due to the restaurant's small size, it also got quite noisy at times. While the food was absolutely superb, the overall atmosphere didn't quite live up to expectations. When you spend almost €1,000 for two people, the entire experience should, in my opinion, be virtually perfect. We have experienced this holistic perfection in a more harmonious way in other Michelin-starred restaurants - despite the exceptionally high culinary standard here.

Hard to write this review, but I felt it was fair to share our experience. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here last year. It was our first time at a 3-star Michelin restaurant, and we had saved for this occasion, choosing it as a special gift for ourselves. Naturally, our expectations were very high. Unfortunately, the evening didn’t fully live up to what we hoped for. We were seated at a table that felt more like a corridor, with a strong light directly above us. From our seats, we could see some backstage elements of the service — open wine bottles, kitchen towels, used glasses — which gave an odd impression throughout the dinner. It slightly broke the atmosphere we expected from a restaurant of this level. We ordered the full tasting menu with wine pairing. During the evening, we were offered two additional glasses of wine and water several times, which we accepted, assuming they were part of the experience. Only at the end did we realize both were charged separately — including the water — which came as a surprise. Service felt a bit rushed, as if the team was very busy. Explanations about the wines and pairings were quite brief. While both food and wines were good, we rarely felt that the pairings truly elevated the dishes. The food itself was, of course, good. Some dishes were genuinely amazing and memorable. However, not all of them stood out. Given the reputation, awards and price point, we honestly expected something more consistently “wow”. Overall, it was a good experience, but not an exceptional one — and for a 3-star Michelin restaurant, we were hoping for something truly unforgettable. On a positive note, we truly appreciated the thoughtful gesture from the team. They surprised us with a small courtesy cake and a handwritten letter signed by the staff to celebrate our anniversary. That was a very kind touch, and we are genuinely grateful for it.

The food is undoubtedly worth the three stars. Course after course, top-class culinary experiences. Incredibly exquisitely presented little works of art that deliver unique taste sensations. Especially the combination of ingredients that one wouldn't have imagined together in a single dish, yet which taste exactly right and simply magnificent. Everything here is just perfect. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the rest of the restaurant. The service is somewhat disorganized and hectic, the tables are crammed close together, and the music is obnoxiously loud. The decor (especially on the table) is simply unworthy of a three-star restaurant. Fittingly, the meat knives, costing over €300 each, are so awkward to hold that you automatically start cutting with the blunt side. It's not a place where you can feel comfortable. The absolute low point, however, is the ridiculously overpriced wine pairing. Here, wines seem to be selected solely based on their name and the highest possible price. There was no discernible connection between the flavors and the dishes. The explanations of the individual wines were completely unprofessional. Furthermore, the portions served were annoyingly meager. Other 3-star restaurants offer a significantly better selection.

Why the overall concept of a restaurant should always include music! A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to enjoy Restaurant Jan in Munich as part of a business invitation, and I'd like to share my impressions. With its 3-star rating, it's known beyond the region and is certainly an institution in the Munich area as well. Therefore, my review here doesn't offer anything fundamentally new beyond the expected, extremely high level of hospitality and culinary creations. My personal impressions are intended more as an encouragement to embrace the 3-star dining experience, even if you haven't yet had the chance to experience it. In my opinion, the premises themselves strike a successful balance between the high standards one would expect at this level and the need to be welcoming to newcomers. You feel well taken care of and looked after. The restaurant is, in my view, just the right size—it shouldn't be any smaller, in my opinion. The open kitchen and the wooden fixtures create a wonderful atmosphere, especially since you wouldn't guess it from the building's exterior. The owner and chef visited our table, and it was immediately clear that passion and a drive for perfection are the foundation of their success. Now to the most important part: the food. In my opinion, Jan Hartwig and his team more than lived up to expectations. All the courses were expertly and creatively presented, and the service team served them with friendliness and flair. The often delicate presentation of the dishes can easily lead one to underestimate the amount of food consumed in an evening like this, and by the end, there was hardly any room left for dessert, which was also nearly perfect. I certainly didn't miss the traditional cheese trolley. Since our colleague had us select the wines for us, I won't comment on them. However, those with a discerning palate will, as expected, find something to their liking or can ask the team for recommendations. In short, a refreshingly youthful and well-balanced experience that will definitely draw me back to Munich again. These dishes were presented in a unique and engaging way, and will certainly entice me to return to Munich more often. In conclusion, I'd like to explain why the music perfectly complemented what was already a perfect evening for me. Because, naturally, an experience of this caliber includes not only the food and drinks, but also the ambiance. And unlike other sectors where sound is used deliberately, in many restaurants it seems rather arbitrary. Not so on this particular evening in Jan. The background music pulled me out of the comfortable slumber I had begun to feel after the delicious food and wine, allowing me to experience the overall concept much more consciously. It was a sound that came from the speakers at just the right volume, perfectly suited to my age group and musical taste, and with its rockier edge, it was a welcome departure from the often-used "lounge music." I discovered some evergreens from my personal "Best Of" playlist, which allowed me to reflect on and process the experience between courses in my own thoughts. Of course, without taking my attention away from my tablemates. As a result, I had a truly uplifting and immersive experience that went beyond the actual dining experience. For me personally, the music played a significant role in the overall concept without distracting from the essence of the meal. I'm sure many other guests didn't even notice or experience it, but for me, that made it all the more enjoyable and special. I don't know if that was intentional. If so, I thought it was fantastic and would like to congratulate Jan Hartwig and his team on this "composition." I will certainly experience and "listen" to it again on my next visit!

The evening at Jan Hartwig was a true delight. Even the courses that were not the main attractions managed to astonish. It is in the details that the magic lies: the ethereal lightness of the sauces, the bright fruitiness of the Beurre Rouge, the tender crumb of the sourdough bread, the sponge-like delicacy of the Wagyu beef, and the artful interplay of shredded Brussels sprout leaves with sous-vide salmon. The meal unfolded like a finely written novel, each chapter more surprising and captivating than the last—astonishing, poetic, deliberate, yet full of whimsy. Only the final sentence left me slightly bemused: a warm donut. Perhaps, however, the story is not yet complete.

Sublime. Everything was of the finest quality there is. Surely in the league of the best restaurants in Germany, if not worldwide. Absolutely refined tastes from savoury to sweet, surprising combinations of international ingredients although its philosophy is based on traditional German dishes with a pronounced French fine dining touch. Service impeccable, very knowledgeable and attentive. Even the Juice pairing was very (!) good, individual, well adapted to the respective course and very well researched (which is often not yet the case in Fine Dining restaurants in general - Germany and France still have to catch up there with the Skandinavians). So far for me the best address in and around Munich - and I've tried several. 3 Michelin stars well deserved.

I had the great pleasure of being Jan Hartwig's guest on October 14, 2025. After visiting the Atelier at the Bayerischer Hof in 2018 and having one of my best fine dining experiences there, I was really looking forward to it. Interior: 5 out of 5 stars The ambiance immediately captivates: open kitchen, clean design, warm wood tones. Elegant yet inviting – almost like being at a friend's home, only with the glow of a star. Fine dining here can be young, approachable, and casual. Service & Staff: 5 out of 5 stars The entire team was warm, attentive, and professional. What was particularly nice was that the dishes were personally explained by the service and kitchen staff – a perfect fit for the open kitchen concept. Even my nut and pork intolerances were carefully considered. Details like these demonstrate the passion and consideration with which the chef works here. Food: 3 out of 5 stars Jan Hartwig set the bar extremely high in 2018. The anticipation was correspondingly high. The amuse-bouche – umami cream, blue poppy seed crust, herring, mustard egg – was a sensational start: a pure explosion of flavor! Then came the first course: My companion had pike dumplings, while I – due to my nut intolerance – was served stuffed vine leaves with dried fig and mint. Unfortunately, the first setback of the evening. The flavor was very flat, almost disappointing. The second course, scallops with baked oxtail and spinach, was again of the highest standard: precise, deep, creative. At that moment, it was clear: this was true Jan Hartwig quality again! The menu continued with sourdough bread, butter, and cream cheese – top-notch in terms of craftsmanship, but somewhat incomprehensible in its concept. For international guests without a strong bread culture, this was certainly a real highlight – but for us locals, it was "just" very good sourdough bread with butter and spread. Why the bread was on the menu as a separate course was not entirely clear to us. I would have preferred it if it had simply been served casually. This created a certain expectation of something creative or surprising, which the dish, in its simplicity, unfortunately failed to fulfill. Then we continued with Scottish salmon, served with Bouchot mussels, Alb lentils, Brussels sprouts, and mimolette – perfectly cooked, intensely flavored – simply first-class. This course could hardly have been executed better. However, my joy was short-lived, because the next course was unfortunately one of the biggest disappointments I've ever experienced in a fine-dining restaurant: tomato tart with mushrooms, Parmesan, and nut butter. Inconsequential and uncreative. Nut and pork intolerance is really nothing unusual. But in combination with the vine leaves before, I got the feeling that the alternatives had relied a bit too heavily on the cheap, vegetarian route. Lamb or fish would have been much more suitable – and above all, higher-quality – options in my opinion. The tomato tart, on the other hand, tasted more like a deli counter than fine dining – a real shame. Finishing the meal: Lars Odefey's Mularde, a cheese course with Harzer Roller, chocolate pudding à la Jan and wild blueberries with shiso consommé and buttermilk lemon ice cream. The duck and dessert were particularly outstanding – perfectly prepared, intense, and creative. The chocolate pudding with pumpkin seeds and vanilla ice cream was a brilliant finale: familiar yet freshly imagined. Conclusion – Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars For me, the focus of a fine-dining experience is always the food. And this is precisely where the evening was a rollercoaster for me. With the occasional disappointments – vine leaves, sourdough bread as a separate course, and the tomato tart – we were constantly falling short of our own expectations. My feedback to the team: Substitution dishes should be clearly agreed upon in advance – and under no circumstances should they seem like a slimmed-down version of the original. An equivalent alternative is crucial here.

The reception here is special: Guests gather in front of the entrance door and are only admitted at a set time. In cool weather, or if you're expecting a relaxed arrival, this might be disconcerting. The entrance and welcome were extremely warm. The whole process went very smoothly, and we were seated at our table within a very short time. Inside, the JAN presents itself with a pared-down, rather simple design. There's no sign of opulent design or architectural sophistication. Materials like wood and stone dominate. It's obvious: The focus here is on the essential: the food. Those expecting a glamorous presentation won't find it. The personable and communicative restaurant manager Kilian Skalett, along with the charming Hanna Beringer, accompanied us throughout the evening. The entire service team operates with an impressive blend of professionalism and warmth. Each course was explained precisely, questions were answered passionately, and we felt cared for throughout, without it feeling "forced." The view into the open kitchen, the laboratory of love, was fascinating. My focus was, of course, Jan Hartwig – one of the most distinguished chefs in Germany. With JAN, he realized his own restaurant concept in 2022 and managed to receive three stars again in less than six months. His credo: Be better today than yesterday! In his dishes, he reinterprets the DNA of German cuisine and translates it into new worlds of flavor. Hartwig seems to be a calm, focused character, rather reserved in his appearance, but with great passion for what he does. He wants to evoke emotions. To awaken childhood memories, he told me at the end of the evening. His cuisine is complex, but not complicated. French foundations, Asian influences, and surprising accents. Each dish seems to be thought through down to the last detail, aromatically deep, and perfectly crafted – without any gimmicks. It's all about the taste. Hartwig cooks with soul. Now I could "appreciate" every single dish and lose myself in euphoric descriptions of the experience. But I won't. It was an extraordinary menu. It can be that simple sometimes. Oh, I almost forgot, only the dish "Handkäs mit Musik" caused controversy. My wife wasn't impressed, so I had the "pleasure" of two portions. And even though Hartwig, a Lower Saxon, had prepared it, I couldn't get used to the Harzer Roller either. But ultimately, the Bavarian will understand: "It doesn't matter!" 😊 Conclusion: We felt completely at home as guests at Restaurant JAN. The evening was characterized by warmth, perfect craftsmanship, and sublime enjoyment. Our expectations were not only met, but exceeded. Anyone who wants to experience great cuisine that is neither loud nor overt and yet emotionally touching should head to Jan Hartwig.

We had lunch at JAN, which was definitely a fantastic experience for us. The menu was perfect, with each course becoming more flavorful, yet there was always a dish that reminded us of our childhood. We'd especially like to thank Helene; she guided us perfectly through the menu and shared little anecdotes. At the end, Jan Hartwig said "goodbye" to us; this personal gesture and the hospitality of the entire team rounded off our experience. THANK YOU

We had a wonderful evening at JAN with relaxed but excellent service. The food was simply a dream. The ambiance was relaxed and inviting. When we were a little pressed for time due to babysitting plans, they skipped a course without any problem. With the wine pairing, we were allowed to choose whether we still wanted the glass. Everything was correctly calculated and deducted. At the end, the host personally bid us farewell – despite the stress in the kitchen. Any rating other than 5 stars is unfair. The service provided here is simply amazing! We'll save up and come back ;) PS: To reviewers who have something to complain about: first check whether everything is 5-star and honor honest work, performance, diligence, and skill!

I'll start with two things I wish had been different: After the main courses were prepared, the chef and namesake stood in front of his kitchen for a relatively long time that afternoon, chatting with two guests in a row. I would have liked him to take a stroll through the dining room; that didn't feel right, a bit like first- and second-class guests. If there's time for guests (which isn't necessary), in my opinion, every table should have a bit of it. For the last main course and before desserts, the wait times were significantly longer than at the beginning of service – I was a bit pressed for time, even though my "time limit" had been communicated to the waiters in advance. But these two comments don't change the fact that JAN is a confident 5 stars; the cuisine and service served up was of a special standard, even for a 3-star restaurant. These greetings from the kitchen weren't served all at once, but one after the other. Some of them were probably brought to the table by the chefs who prepared/plated them, which I find a nice detail. Even with the aperitifs, it was noticeable that not all of the courses/dishes, based on their names, would be expected in a Michelin-starred restaurant. It was the first time for me to be served an aperitif in a gourmet restaurant that not only called "Gaisburger Marsch," but also looked like it and tasted similar – only at the highest level. That requires a healthy dose of self-confidence – I'll come back to that later. I was tempted to include one or two signature dishes in the menu, but ultimately stuck with the suggested order due to time constraints. The first highlight for me was the Schliersee trout at the start of the meal, which was enhanced with other ingredients in such a way that the dark flavor of the fish wasn't overpowered but perfectly complemented. My favorite course followed immediately afterward. I've always been a fan of Jakibsmuschel (scallops) and am happy when I find it on a menu. And Jan's variation, along with a pike dumpling, was simply fantastic. The false red mullet not only looked beautiful, but I found it exceptionally creative in its combination with veal tongue. Then came a main course that again falls into the category of "In a gourmet restaurant? Seriously?" The restaurant manager said it wasn't that uncommon these days, but for me, pork belly in a 3-star restaurant was a first. It wasn't as impressive in taste as the fish and shellfish dishes before it. The second meat course, the pigeon breast, beautifully presented with a truffle doily on top, was a completely different story. The accompanying sauce was absolutely divine, but they didn't want to sell me a bucket to take home :) Of the sweet courses that followed, the Braeburn apple in a Calvados sauce deserves special mention. Which isn't to say that the cheese pre-dessert and the petit fours weren't delicious—quite the opposite. Since I was traveling by car, there was only a very limited – and well-matched – wine pairing. A glance at the extensive wine list suggested that perhaps next time I'd stay overnight in Munich, as there were some truly delicious dishes on it. All in all – as mentioned above – a successful lunch menu with absolutely no weaknesses, and I plan to stop by again when I get the chance. It's worth it.

This restaurant is very deserving of its 3 stars!! We brought our 6 year old with us, not his first Michelin experience. They were accommodating of him and made him his favourite steak of his life. A perfectly cooked 2” cube of Wagyu beef and some potatoes. The tasting menu and wine pairings were spectacular and I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are planning to visit Munich. Make sure you make a reservation ahead of time.

Today, August 1, 2025, was my second time there, this time invited by a customer - thank you so much, Karlo! Everything was fantastically beautiful! I'll be back as soon as I can afford it. A beautiful place. Not too pretentious, but "relaxed" and cozy. Absolutely fantastic staff, so human and visible at the table and in the open-view kitchen. The food "won me" from the first bite, simply divine, WOW! My "criticism" at "very high level" is irrelevant, merely a suggestion for improvement: The menu print is illegible. The panna cotta could have been improved, perhaps with a vanilla pod. Everything else: Hats off, I'm blown away by what's possible in a "restaurant." But thank you, thank you, thank you to the team; it was an unforgettably wonderful visit. I get emotional and sometimes cry at special wines or smells. Today I cried with you. Because it was so beautiful. I'm sorry, despite all the complicated, divine dishes, it was the "bread" that made me cry with joy. It hurts me so much right now that I didn't insist on packing the leftovers, but I was simply "full & happy" at the end. August 1, 2025, Ville Niskanen Old review from my first visit: The ambiance was elegant and inviting, the service super attentive, highly professional, and yet warm. The music wasn't too loud, and the distance between the tables was just right. The best I've personally experienced so far. My meal highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the mustard egg, a dish that will remain in my memory forever. Simply amazing. All the other dishes were divine, too. The red wine from Walter Schullian that accompanied the menu wasn't perfect for me: 2020 Lacus (70% Cabernet Franc – 30% Merlot). It was far too young and difficult to approach. Decanting might have helped a little here, but it's still not the best choice in my opinion. When my friends or I cook and drink wine on this budget, the taste of the food or the aroma of the wine might make me cry (from pleasure 😊 ), but unfortunately, that didn't happen at JAN Restaurant. Overall, my lunch at JAN was an absolutely special experience, my first time at a 3-star restaurant. I'll be back as soon as I can afford it. When I do, I'll bring my own wine if possible (I didn't even notice and didn't think to ask if the restaurant had a wine list).

I recently had the pleasure of celebrating my husband's birthday at Jan, a three-Michelin-star restaurant renowned for its exceptional cuisine and outstanding service. We had a unique and delightful dining experience as each dish showcased the creativity of the chef, whose innovative approach to flavors and presentation left us in awe. I especially liked that for each dish there was a story behind it, drawn from Jan’s experience as a cook and artist. The kitchen is named "Lab of Love," which perfectly describes what Jan's kitchen is all about. Often, the cooks came to the table, presenting and explaining what they had created, which added a personal touch to the experience. Additionally, we enjoyed a fantastic selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic pairings that perfectly complemented our meals. I wholeheartedly recommend Jan to anyone seeking an extraordinary dining experience.

For a 3-star restaurant, the room has a very odd seating arrangement. If you're unlucky, you'll get a table at the very back in the "bunker." The waiters are constantly opening the cupboard to get glasses and prepare the wine, etc. nearby. There's a narrow corridor with a few tables, and then the large room. At this price level, I don't expect any bad tables, and there's so much to dislike about the room decor. The food was good, but there were a few dishes that were very average. The service was very hit-or-miss and seemed chaotic. The wine pairing was very average. As some reviewers have mentioned, the regulars seemed to receive the best service from the head waiter and the waiting team. The others receive only minimal service. After eating at many 3-star restaurants around the world, this was the biggest disappointment for me. I'm glad Tohru has now received 3 stars. It truly deserves it, and I will go there again.

Over and over and over again........! My "all-time favorite"! We've been here several times. Both for lunch and dinner. Starting with the service, the menu is more than worth a visit. The atmosphere is light, very inviting. The service is fresh, friendly, and professional. If you're worried that a 3-star restaurant might be unapproachable, don't worry. You can feel at home here. Every course is a delight, not just visually but also culinary! If you get goosebumps while eating, it speaks more than a thousand words. The plates are arranged like a painting. Almost too good to touch. But only almost ;-) Every bite is balanced in flavor and consistency. You can taste the selection of ingredients in every bite. The sauces!!!!! Please bottle them! What I personally found exciting, as a native of Lower Saxony, were the interpretations of these regional dishes that we were able to enjoy. Over and over and over again....!

If you are in the mood for self inflicting wound by a low fat yogurt sprinkled with granola or better yet american processed cheese served for dinner washed down by cheap wine, you should certainly come visit this so-called 3 Michelin star restaurant . There, you will truly experience creativity ,quality , flavors, hospitality and service you have been expecting from a professional chef running a Michelin star restaurant. Jan does not deserve its 3 Michelin stars — in fact, it doesn’t deserve any. From the moment we walked in, something felt off. The dining room was uninspired, the host was unfriendly, and the overall atmosphere lacked the warmth and refinement you expect from a world-class restaurant. There was no sense of welcome or occasion. Service was poorly executed and completely out of sync with the kitchen. We sat with empty glasses for long stretches, and there was no sommelier — a glaring omission for a supposedly elite dining experience. The wine selections felt cheap and unconsidered, and there was no guidance or pairing offered. The food was at best mediocre. The short rib dish, a main course, was dry and completely lacking in flavor — made worse by a dull knife that made it nearly impossible to cut. The final course, a yogurt with granola, felt more like breakfast than a thoughtful end to a fine meal. It was jarring and left me with a very upset stomach the next day. There was no harmony between the kitchen and the floor staff — it felt chaotic, disorganized, and amateur. To top it off, a woman seated alone across from me kept nodding off at the table, which gave the distinct impression she was there simply to fill seats. Jan was not just disappointing — it was baffling. This is not a restaurant operating at a 3-star level. It’s a mystery how it earned that recognition.

The fact that JAN continues to hold any Michelin stars—let alone three—is incredible. I went with my mother and father on our trip to Munich and our experience on June 24 presented us with a dining experience that would be unacceptable at any price point—let alone €560/per person we paid. We entered into a very casual and unrefined dining room playing 80s music—which we didn’t originally pay much attention to—as we were greatly looking forward to the food. Our attention was grabbed though when we noticed one guest was seated awkwardly facing a structural pylon and directly in a walkway, an unthinkable layout for a supposed fine dining establishment. Additionally the tables were almost entirely barren—with no tablecloth and just a little cloth placemat with JANs name on it—a very cheap looking setup. Service throughout the evening was abysmal. Dirty silverware remained on our table across multiple courses. When replacements were eventually brought, they were carelessly placed, often not even set on the provided silverware stones. Overall Staff coordination was chaotic with kitchen staff occasionally coming out to serve food. Making matters worse, there was no designated sommelier, which is simply unacceptable given that the wine pairing is priced at €189 per person. The “sommelier” was regularly seen serving food and helping the kitchen. That price point demands thoughtful selections and knowledgeable service. Instead, we received acidic, overly tannic, uninspired wines that didn’t remotely pair with the food and left an unpleasant aftertaste. We even had to ask for a different wine for the short rib pairing because the one provided tasted worse than boxed wine from a college party. Finally, the food did not redeem the experience. After a great amuse bouche and a passable tartare and pikeperch, the kitchen completely fell apart. The short rib was dry and inedible, the duck was chewy and served with dull silverware and “breakfast for dinner” turned out to be little more than a buffet granola and yogurt. That was on top of the disharmonious pace of the operation. The final dessert was a chaotic pile of fruit and sugar. At best, the food was a 4/10—and that’s generous. Everything else about the experience was a firm 1/10. When confronted about some of these issues the staff’s tone ranged from indifferent to actively condescending. When we politely noted that the knives provided with the duck course were too dull to cut the meat, the response was a patronizing, “Are you using the correct side of the knife?”—as though we were children unfamiliar with cutlery To add one final layer of strangeness: the dining room seemed artificially filled. A few diners were sitting alone— and most notably —there was one woman who slept through half the meal. It gave the impression that guests were comped or paid simply to give the appearance of demand—an uncomfortable and shady practice for a restaurant of this supposed stature. We paid our bill and sprinted out of the restaurant relieved to be done with the most gruesome 4 hours in recent memory. JAN is not a fine dining experience—it is a disjointed, overpriced, and deeply pretentious operation from an individual who is clearly just cruising on name recognition. If you’re looking for a truly exceptional Michelin-starred experience in Munich, skip JAN entirely and go to Restaurant Atelier. We had an absolutely incredible experience there 3 days prior. They deserve the 3 stars, JAN deserves absolutely none.

We had an unforgettable evening at JAN yesterday. We've never eaten so well before. We were privileged to enjoy culinary works of art – and as fine dining newbies, they opened our eyes to a whole new understanding of aromas and flavors. We would particularly like to highlight the service: The fact that some of the dishes were explained by the chefs themselves gave them the visibility they deserve. They are artists – and it's only right that they are allowed to present their work themselves. This created a wonderful transparency. As guests, we were able to share in their world, their thoughts and creations – and you just think: why can't you just cook a little better yourself – despite all your efforts :D In any case, the enthusiasm and palpable passion of all the service staff was impressive. In extremely pleasant conversations with a waitress, she raved about, among other things, a special pea shape. A young chef, with shining eyes, remarked almost casually, while a dish of herbs was being sprayed with cucumber vinegar, that he found it so beautiful because it looked "like morning dew on the herbs." Experiencing this sense of aesthetics, this enthusiasm and passion was impressive, authentic, and in a certain way, very inspiring – and genuinely humbled us, given the dedication we were able to experience. And all of this in a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere – the fact that we could also laugh together was extremely pleasant. A culture of appreciation and respect prevailed in every respect: for the food, the creations, the guests. And Jan Hartwig's team more than deserves this appreciation as well. It was an evening that broadened our awareness on several levels and further deepened our humility towards good food and the work behind it. Thank you for this special experience!

The 3-star Restaurant Jan is extreme: the basic version of the menu costs €355 per person, but with various extras it can become significantly more expensive. The wine list is also very expensive (and I don't mean DRC or Pétrus…). And yet this restaurant is a recommendation because the food is simply perfect. Many of the individual courses touched me enormously, they bring back memories and are often breathtakingly good and beautiful - beautiful both visually and in the variety of flavors and harmony. The Schliersee trout, for example, or the Königsberger style veal sweetbreads. The menu with over a dozen courses is almost overwhelming, every course is a work of art, tells a story - you reach your limits with the quantity and complexity, and yet you can't leave anything behind on your plate because it tastes so good.

Fine-Tuning for Gourmets: Our Evening at “JAN” (Munich) 15.1.25, we visited “JAN” in Munich. Even before tasting the first courses, we sensed something special: Foie Gras, Crustade, Carne Cruda & Bonito amuse-bouches delighted us, followed by an excellent Gaisburger Marsch and a divine Rockefeller oyster. The kitchen impressed further with char and pike quenelles, so precise we nearly declared them the highlight. 1. Ambiance Our evening began awkwardly, waiting outside in the cold for five minutes because the doorbell went unheard. Inside, a modern, minimalist style greeted us, though bright lights gave certain tables a harsh “spotlight.” Softer lighting would have better suited the upscale vibe. The restrooms were clean but felt more like a standard eatery than a gourmet landmark. Overall, these new premises don’t convey a true three-star ambiance. 2. Culinary Highlights vs. Letdowns Amuse-bouches and fish dishes showed refined, three-star finesse. Veal sweetbreads and pigeon, though solid, lacked an unforgettable spark of the heart. 3. Service & Flow At-table service was friendly and knowledgeable, though a mild rush was noticeable. Our seven-course meal stretched nearly five hours, making it feel like a marathon. We ended up taking petits fours to go. 4. High Points Foie Gras, mini Gaisburger Marsch, and that Rockefeller oyster were standouts. Char and pike quenelles were equally impressive. Even dessert brought a smile, though we were already quite full. 5. Improvements The missed doorbell, overly bright lighting at some chairs, and extended wait times detracted from a true fine-dining aura. Veal sweetbreads and pigeon might benefit from a creative twist. 6. Balancing the Stars While the kitchen feels 3-star in flavor and execution, service and ambiance hover around 1 star due to layout, lighting, and pacing. Blending the two might yield a fair 2-star rating, echoing our experience at “Moesmer.” where it was the opposite around. 7. Conclusion “JAN” delivers some exceptional courses—especially in seafood—but the lengthy format tests even dedicated foodies. A more streamlined menu and a setting truly suited to top-tier dining would give “JAN” the polish it deserves. There’s real potential here, yet we personally favor the cohesive three-star feel found at his former spots, the Atelier and even the Schloss Nymphenburg pop-up location. Bon appétit, KK

In an inconspicuous building just two blocks from Munich Central Station is a small but unusual restaurant that I have been wanting to visit for some time. My solution: visit in January. However, visiting out of season did not detract in any way from the excellent service and of course the food. I particularly liked the pike dumpling 3.0 (the third version of this dish in the restaurant) and the grilled red mullet with veal tongue. The very bright and modern main dining area has a partially open kitchen so you can watch the final preparation of each dish. Chef Hartwig was often seen supervising his kitchen brigade. I hope to come back later this year. / Located in a nondescript building, just two blocks from Munich Central Station, is a small but exceptional restaurant that I've been trying to visit for quite some time; my solution - visit in January. The course was really good. Each dishes were carefully curated and tasted amazing. Visited quite a few and this is my personal top 3-starred restaurant at the moment.

We were thrilled. The food was absolutely top quality, the service was perfect. You don't need a lot of (evaluative) words. The prices are quite high for Germany, but still reasonable in my opinion. A clear recommendation

Phenomenal dinning experience. The restaurant start service at 19:00 sharp. The area where it’s located isn’t the most interesting but from the moment you go through the doors it’s an entirely different experience. The service is very courteous and attentive. At all times they will take care of you and ensure your comfort. The food is creative but never goes into excessive or overly experimental territories, the flavors are well balanced, and the wine pairing is perfectly tailored to go along. The restaurant offers only a set tasting menu but will accommodate allergies and intolerances. They need to be informed at least 48 hours in advance. It’s a rather pricey experience but the cost is not really different from what you can expect at a 3 Michelin stars restaurant.

If you're looking for the ultimate dining experience in Munich, JAN is the place to be. I visited to celebrate a friend's 21st birthday, and I can confidently say it was the best dining experience of my life. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, striking the perfect balance between sophistication and comfort. Every dish we tried was a work of art, crafted with precision and bursting with flavor. The wine selection was outstanding, with expert recommendations from the staff that elevated our meal to another level. What truly sets JAN apart is the service. The team was attentive, professional, and incredibly friendly, making us feel like VIPs throughout the evening. They went out of their way to ensure every detail was perfect, adding thoughtful touches that made the celebration truly special. If you're considering a visit to JAN, don’t hesitate. Whether it’s a special occasion or just a treat-yourself moment, this restaurant is an absolute must. Thank you, JAN, for an unforgettable evening—we’ll be talking about it for years to come!

The fries were cold and the staff were unfriendly to customers. Our last visit.
