Papaya Restaurant - رستوران ایرانی in Hamburg

I was really excited to try this restaurant, but unfortunately, the evening was a disappointment. The food was bland and poorly prepared – nothing that you couldn't get much better at many other places in Hamburg. As a Persian, I place great value on authentic flavors and fresh ingredients, but here, neither the taste nor the quality were up to scratch. The service was also abysmal: unfriendly, uncoordinated, and at times downright disrespectful. What was particularly unpleasant was that during our visit, an employee loudly left the restaurant and kicked a bicycle to the ground outside. The situation was so uncomfortable that I could barely relax. On top of that, it was extremely loud the whole time, even after 11 p.m. On another evening, after the restaurant closed, things got really strange. My family and I wanted to get our car. Several men were standing near the entrance, chatting conspicuously in the dark. Further down the street, bags were being passed back and forth – the whole thing seemed like a scene from a bad crime thriller. I can't and don't want to assume anything, but this was definitely not a normal sight for a restaurant. Another downside: They only accept cash payments – which, in this combination, seems anything but trustworthy. My conclusion: This is definitely not a place I can recommend. If you're looking for good, authentic food in Hamburg, you should try alternatives like Pars Restaurant, Teheran Restaurant, or Shiraz – there you'll find genuine hospitality, excellent Persian food, and an all-around pleasant experience.

The Kale Pache tasted great there, the service was excellent and everything was perfect. At the end we were treated to tea and stuffed dates with walnuts. Very tasty 😋 Always happy!

My visit to Papaya was unfortunately a bitter disappointment. From the moment I entered the restaurant, I didn't feel welcome – the staff were cold, unattentive, and at times even unfriendly. Instead of making guests feel at ease, I felt like I was intruding. The food itself was also disappointing. The dishes seemed carelessly prepared, bland in flavor, and of poor quality. Unfortunately, I didn't detect any freshness or refinement here. I would have expected considerably more for the prices. Another major drawback: Payment is cash only. In this day and age, where card payments are standard almost everywhere, I find this extremely impractical and not customer-friendly. But you can imagine what "broken device" and only cash payments mean. The shady-looking manager drives an expensive car. They claim to be located in the popular "Winterhude" district. Which is, of course, nonsense. Right on a busy street with construction nearby, but that's not something you like to include in the description... The kitchen is located directly on the street at sidewalk level, with the window open. Cooked rice is probably placed on the windowsill to cool. Not three meters from cars waiting at the traffic lights. Ugh. All in all, the visit to Papaya was a very negative experience. Between the unfriendly service, bad food, and lack of payment options, I have no reason to recommend this restaurant.

We visited this restaurant twice and were very disappointed both times. We found hair in our food, and when we reported it, we were rudely told it was our own hair. The chef even brought a raw skewer to the table, behaving disrespectfully. The quality of the kebabs was very poor, and the substitute dish (chicken skewer) was oversalted and burnt, so we couldn't eat it. Unfortunately, it was a wasted experience.

The live music on weekends is also particularly nice, adding a very special touch to the evening. I don't understand the negative reviews here. My companion and I were delighted, both with the delicious, well-seasoned food and with the very friendly and attentive service. We'd be happy to come back! Regarding the "loud music" mentioned in some reviews, this only happens on Fridays and Saturdays, when live music is played. If you don't like that, you should choose another day to eat here.

I experienced a lovely night at papaya with my uncle because of fantastic atmosphere, including Persian live music, deleciouse foods (Koobideh and Ghormesabzi). We enjoyed a lot. Thanks Papaya!

I've tried this restaurant three times now, with different dishes and drinks, and I can say: it's truly excellent. A very important point is that the restaurant's management, team, and chefs completely changed a few months ago. Many of the negative reviews date back to before this change. I've had some of the best cocktails of my life here – some of them are even the house's own creations and were truly outstanding. As an Iranian who knows the difference between good and bad kebabs, I can say that the kebabs here are definitely prepared with fresh, high-quality meat (unfortunately, quite unlike most of the kebabs I've eaten in Hamburg so far). As for the prices, I find them absolutely reasonable. It's simply impossible to offer authentic Iranian kebabs with a generous amount of high-quality meat for a low price. If they're still very cheap, you have to seriously question the quality of the meat used. Personally, I never eat kebabs in extremely cheap restaurants because you simply don't know what kind of meat was used to keep the price so low. On certain days and times of the week, they also offer live music with a singer and Persian dancing, which is very popular with many guests. If you don't fancy that kind of atmosphere, you can simply visit the restaurant during quieter times or on other days of the week. But if you enjoy that, you're sure to have a great time here! If good quality and your health are important to you, I highly recommend this restaurant.

The new Papaya restaurant on Winterhuder Weg offers an average experience. The food is OK, but the noise caused by the restaurant in the neighborhood is disturbing. There is insufficient soundproofing, making conversations difficult to hold. If you are looking for a quiet environment, this is not the place. The service is not that friendly, and overall the restaurant leaves no lasting impression other than noise. The whining is really unbearable and echoes through the entire neighborhood. Please be considerate ⚠️

Management is disrespectful and seems to have no interest in good service. After three hours of waiting, the food finally came, of course without a starter or an apology. The quality of the food was a disgrace: The fish was full of bones and inedible. The chicken kebab was rock hard, dry and tasteless. The Kobideh kebab half burnt and half raw – incredible. As if that wasn't enough, they only accept cash payment. Why? Conclusion: Just don't go! A huge failure.

Simply incredible! I've never been as excited about a Persian restaurant as I was here. As soon as you enter you are greeted by a warm, authentic atmosphere. The furnishings, the music and, above all, the smell from the kitchen immediately transport you to the Orient. The food? An absolute dream! Every bite was an explosion of flavor – perfectly seasoned, freshly prepared and served with so much love. The kebab in particular was sensationally tender, and the rice dishes were simply heavenly. Food quality is good. Live music is good. Forcing minimum order is a bad idea as it causes bad feeling for the customers.Instead, they can define an entrance-fee for the nights they have live music. ( I can understand that live music costs and they should also earn this money). Hidden costs like water on the table, is also not a good idea. Overall, I think, being more clear on costs and customer satisfaction are the points that they should work on.

Unerfahrene Bedienung , kleine Cola statt große Grösse ans Tisch gebracht , nach dem sie drauf angesprochen wurde sagte sie trinken sie es aus bei Bedarf bringe ich ihnen eine zweites Glas , was auch nicht geschehen ist. 2. Das Fleisch war hart und nicht möglich zu Essen. Kein Angebot ob was neues gebraucht werden soll oder Geld zurück. Natürlich nicht !!!!!! 3. Als wir auf Nachfrage Nachtisch bestellt haben hat sie anstatt für 4 Personen 3 migrige Baklava Stückchen uns hingestellt und meinte als Entschuldigung. 4. Wir haben um 21:50 Uhr bezahlt und sie bekam für 200€ Rechnung natürlich auch 10 Prozent Trinkgeld 20€ Aber keine 2 Minuten später sind wir dabei mit unsere Freunde Fotos zu machen da macht die Tochter der Chefin die Innenbeleuchtung aus so das wir komplett im Dunkeln standen. Fazit ; Wir gehen nie wieder dahin . Sehr traurig Wenn Mann keinerlei Erfahrung hat sollte man es mit Selbständigkeit lassen.

I can summarize our experience and the divided opinions about the restaurant for you: 1. Food: genuine Persian tastes and the kababs are perfect; Torsh, Koobideh, and Barg are really delicious and portioned adequately. They have a welcome appetizer of bread, cheese and herbs (noon-panir-sabzi). We also enjoyed the nice side dishes and a great homemade safran drink that they recommended. 2. Atmosphere: the live music and people dancing in the middle create a great positive vibe but it can catch you off guard. It can get also quite loud (+100 dB, unsafe for hearing) especially if you are a bit too close to the loud speakers. So in case you have non-Iranian guests or loud music bothers you, be prepared, or I‘d suggest to avoid going there on the evenings when they have live music. Overall the restaurant is nicely decorated but the tables are a bit too cramped together. 3. Staff: They were all nice and helpful, but some of them were clearly under training and a lady was very obviously supervising/micromanaging them. We found the tension a bit too obvious. All in all, I would definitely come back again in the future, but would cautiously recommend it to other friends.

Außer unserem war nur noch ein Tisch besetzt..nach 25 Minuten Wartezeit begannen die beiden Servicekräfte am Nebentisch zu essen..auf meine Frage, wann denn unser Essen kommen würde, sagte man uns..wir hätten gar nichts bestellt?!…nun gut..auch so etwas muss man mal erleben…die beiden Tees mussten wir nicht bezahlen.

I've actually been there several times and given it several chances. Dishes don't taste classically Iranian at all. Kubideh just tasted like bad mince. Mirze ghasemi was more of an omelet with tomatoes instead of an eggplant base. Mahitshe was full of fat, not properly processed and smelled really bad. Not edible at all. Khoresht was full of oil and tasted the same. Chicken dry. Not Iranian but Arabic bread. So absolutely inedible and inauthentic. The worst thing, unfortunately, is the customer service. Very, very unfriendly and snooty. They turn around when someone talks to you. Card payment not possible. Wasn't there anywhere and wasn't communicated. My husband had to go through 5 machines and drove to Mundsburg while we waited there with the children for half an hour, without success. A friendly hint that you should say this beforehand or put a sign somewhere saying that card payment is not possible, especially with a large family, was not welcomed at all. It's not easy to have several hundred euros in your pocket in the 21st century. Instead of an apology, there was a discussion, both from the owner and the waitress. It wasn't so bad that the man had to drive through half of Hamburg, they said. Absolutely bottom drawer. And the rating is actually worded in a friendly way. Food was really disastrous, customer service was unprofessional and toilets sucked. There are no parking spaces either.

The chicken kebab was undercooked on the inside and the pieces of meat were cut too thick, resembling boiled chicken rather than grilled. - Salad bar: A free salad bar was available, but I don't recommend it. The lettuce was poorly washed and full of small flies. The salad plates were also not clean, with visible stains and fingerprints. When I reported this to the restaurant, all I received was an unprofessional "Okay" without an apology. - Additional costs: In the end we charged 3 euros per person for the music. ! The Bastani Zaferani had an elegant taste, reminiscent of traditional Iranian ice cream. The Kashko Bademjan and Mirza Ghasemi served as starters were perfectly balanced, offering a delightful blend of slightly sour and smoky flavors. The Zereshk Polo with chicken, though a bit greasy, had a good taste overall.
