Ottenthal in Berlin

Kantstrasse in the Charlottenburg district is undoubtedly not one of Berlin's most beautiful streets! It's a busy road leading toward the exhibition halls and the motorway access roads! But the area at the beginning of the street is noteworthy for its interesting buildings, which are of interest to visitors to the city: not far from the Ottenthal Restaurant is the magnificent building of the "Theater des Westens." Since 2002, it has been called the "Stage Theater des Westens," where two highly successful musicals are currently being shown: "The Nurse" and "Romeo and Juliet." There are also several notable restaurants, such as the "Paris Bar" and several Vietnamese restaurants! The "Ottenthal" has been serving its guests with excellent Austrian cuisine for over 30 years! The restaurant has 45 tables inside and another 10 seats at the bar! There are five tables outside, where you can also enjoy friendly service in nice weather! Today I chose a wine from their own vineyard: Rose Fizzanze, and for starters: creamed mushroom soup and bread with apple cheese (mashed potatoes with sour cream, salt, pepper, and white garlic!) A very good choice, as I discovered during the meal!!! For the main course, there was creamed goulash with spaetzle! I can't remember having eaten goulash like this in the past 5 years! Truly the best Austrian cuisine!!! But the big surprise came with dessert: original Kaiserschmarren!! Not from a bag, like almost everywhere else in the city! It took 20 minutes for the delicious dessert to arrive on the table! And it exceeded all my expectations!!! Very, very delicious! Every piece was a delight, because it wasn't a factory-made product, but a carefully prepared classic Austrian pastry: Kaiserschmarren, as it should be! j If you're visiting Berlin and want to enjoy Austrian cuisine after a visit to the Zoological Garden or a stroll along Kurfürstendamm, you should visit Ottenthal on Kantstrasse! And a special compliment goes to the service: our order was taken quickly and friendly, and the food arrived promptly! And that, even though the very pleasant and friendly staff member was serving 15 other guests at the same time! And the short goodbye chat was filled with great warmth! Thank you so much!!! The next visit is already planned because there are still other delicious dishes to try!

What a feast! Wafer-thin, golden-brown schnitzel, lukewarm potato salad, and delicious desserts. A perfect dinner from start to finish.

We were first served bread and cream while waiting for our food, which was a nice start. I tried the small Schnitzel and quite liked it. The portion was filling and the meat was tender, almost melting in the mouth. For dessert, I had the strudel and the lovely smell of cinnamon filled the table as soon as it arrived. The only slight disappointment was that it did not come with a scoop of ice cream, which I had expected. Although maybe there was an option on the menu that I missed. To finish, they treated us to two small pieces of cake when we paid the bill, which was lovely. Overall, I really enjoyed my dinner at Ottenthal.

Great Kaiserschmarrn, friendly staff and a warm atmosphere!

A very traditional Viennese restaurant. The service was initially very friendly, but when we, a young group, remained seated and chatted after dinner, the waitress seemed irritated. The schnitzel and potato salad were very good. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Unfortunately, Ottenthal is no longer one of our favorite Austrian restaurants, even though its location near Zoo Station makes it easily accessible by public transport. The service is still excellent, but the price-performance ratio is no longer up to scratch. A Wiener Schnitzel, which is more like breadcrumbs and where you have to hunt for the extremely thin slice of veal, is simply unacceptable. The mere four pieces of goulash on our guests' plates was more than disappointing. It's a shame, we used to love this place.

I walked past it for years until I recently went in for the first time. It's a very nice place. The staff is incredibly friendly, the food is excellent, and the prices are a bit high, but they match the quality and the atmosphere.

Overrated. The service was great but the schnitzel was weird. Baumkuchen was good but I wouldn’t get it again. The best thing was the potato salad.

We ate here yesterday. It's rather unassuming from the outside, but the interior is very tastefully decorated, and the food tops off the ambiance. Everything was great and reminded us of our last vacation in Austria.

A fantastic Austrian restaurant in a great location, where you can enjoy excellent Austrian dishes and drinks... A must-visit for me on every visit to Berlin for decades (!). Recommended, even if the typical ambiance and even more typical Austrian humor are simply missing in Germany's capital. The "Servus" from the head waiter is at least a first attempt 😉 Top-notch food, non-alcoholic beer (really excellent!) instead of from Austria, at least from the Czech Republic, which, as Bohemia, was also part of the former Habsburg monarchy. 😀 The fact that the service team was more concerned with themselves than with the guests perhaps explains why the bread basket with spread, along with all the rest, was only served at the end. It would have been better served before the main course. But that would be Austrian whining at the highest level about an Austrian restaurant in Berlin...

The food was amazing. Everything was delicate and perfectly balanced. I would recommend this place to people coming to Berlin and wanting to experiment an excellent Austrian restaurant. Altough, I have to leave two stars out, because the service from the older gentleman was rude and cold and in contradiction with such refined dining.

Very good food, too good. I think I simply ate too much. For the main course and dessert, I couldn't decide between Kaiserschmarrn and apricot dumplings. The apricot dumplings were absolutely fantastic, but they could improve the Kaiserschmarrn a bit. I think they could do better. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Berlin.

A great find for brunch lovers. The avocado toast with poached eggs was perfect — fresh bread, creamy avocado, and runny yolks. Coffee was strong and smooth, and the staff didn’t rush us at all. Great spot to spend a slow Sunday morning.

I needed to eat a good wiener schnitzel ... I looked in my font for the food around my hotel 🏨 and in 10 minutes walk there was this restaurant ... from the photos I can recognize the good food then the taste and it’s time to verify it in the place! Honestly, I almost never make mistakes in this type of food 🥗 and that’s how it was .:. In addition ... Better than I expected / wanted. ... so I can only say thank you to the cook for making us happy with the food .. we are Italian and always we tells us that in Germany you don’t eat well .... Well, I just think they haven’t found the right places and this is one of them ... More than recommended 🫡👍

This place has mastered the art of casual fine dining. The atmosphere is laid-back but with a clear attention to detail in everything — from the cutlery to the plating. I had the duck ravioli in sage butter, and it was simply divine. The waiter knew exactly when to approach and when to leave us alone. I felt relaxed, happy, and genuinely satisfied.

Die Suppe und Schnitzel waren sehr gut, aber der Kaiserschmarrn und besonders die Sachertorte waren herausragend. Anfangs war ich etwas irritiert, als wir anders als die Tische um uns herum zehn Minuten auf die Aufmerksamkeit der Bedienung warten mussten. Da schmerzten die doch hohen Preise. Aber dann löste sich alles in Wohlgefallen auf und die Bedienung war sehr freundlich. Es war ungelogen die beste Sachertorte, die ich je gegessen habe. Allein deswegen werde ich wiederkommen.

A wonderful, traditional Austrian restaurant in Berlin, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and fantastic service. The Wiener Schnitzel is spot-on—light, crisp, and puffed up perfectly—exactly how it should be. The Apfelstrudel is also excellent, with a flaky pastry and just the right level of sweetness. If you’re after classic Austrian food done well, Ottenthal is a great choice. The team really knows their craft, and the service makes the whole experience feel extra special.

Ottenthal was a wonderful dining experience for our whole family. The food was absolutely excellent — Austrian family members commented it was the best schnitzel outside Austria :). The Tafelspitz was tender and delicious, and the palatschinken were tops. The service was so warm and attentive — this was top notch and I’d love to return when next in Berlin.

Very tasty food, typical of the region, and in a city like Berlin, a nice change and very tasty. Recommended, table reservation recommended.

I really enjoyed this place, the atmosphere is really nice and the staff were very kind and helpful and spoke English. I think this would make a very cute date spot. I love that they make an effort to avoid using plastics and aluminum in their kitchen (mentioned in menu). The food was delicious and you could tell they used high quality ingredients. The portions were generous, as an American, I was stuffed! The cost was very reasonable and they take cards. Will definitely visit again next time I'm in Berlin.

We celebrated an upscale birthday in a small group. We put a lot of strain on our employees with countless phone calls to coordinate in advance. The service was nevertheless extremely friendly, competent, attentive - exemplary. Special requests for decoration and food were always fulfilled in a charming manner. The schnitzels were delicious, the Sachertorte - as promised - was a hit. The rooms are stylish. Recommended, we would love to come back.

The Ottenthal restaurant is located close to Savignyplatz on Kantstrasse. The selection of dishes and wines from Austrian cuisine is really very convincing. Above all, our waiter was very knowledgeable about the wines.

Malgré notre réservation téléphonique acceptée, malgré notre heure d’arrivée 10 minutes avant, la table avait été donnée à des gens qui n’avaient pas réservé. Schnitzel done right!!! I'm a schnitzel fan and search tirelessly for them when I travel. This is la creme dela creme. Top 2 in my life. Not only that, the pumpkin soup and the beef were also top notch. Service was impeccable as well. Can't recommend it enough. Hats off to them!!!

A really nice evening in Ottenthal! We ate at Ottenthal on April 26th, 2025 - and it was simply great! The restaurant is very comfortably furnished, you immediately feel at home. The staff was super friendly and you can really tell that they enjoy their job. I had the original Wiener Schnitzel with asparagus, potatoes and homemade hollandaise sauce – simply delicious! The schnitzel was perfectly breaded, the asparagus was nice and tender with a bite, and the hollandaise was really creamy. For dessert there was Kaiserschmarrn with plum roast – absolutely heavenly! Really the best Kaiserschmarrn I've eaten so far. Overall, a thoroughly successful evening. If you like really good Austrian cuisine and great service, you should definitely stop by here. We'll definitely be back!

Did not live up to expectations. We had wiener schnitzel and I have never had a wiener schnitzel with so little meat in it. The taste was ok. The potato salad was fine but a little too sweet for our taste.

Unfortunately this time a bad surprise! For several years we have always been very satisfied and pleased with the excellent service (often with guests) at the “Ottenthaler”. This time we wanted to treat ourselves to something very special for my birthday - unfortunately it was a mistake! At first the waiter recommended a “garden herb salad” as a starter, but unfortunately it was completely forgotten. What was served (i.e. without a starter!) was an onion roast, which my husband and I clearly remembered much better! This dish is charged at almost €40 - but it actually consisted of a thin slice of meat, tough, dry and completely fried, draped with a maximum of two sliced ​​jacket potatoes, and almost no sauce with a few green beans! We were out all day and just hungry - so we ate everything. That's why a specific complaint was out of the question for us! Nevertheless, we spoke to two of the waiters about our disappointment. However, everything was acknowledged without emotion. In such cases, it is quite common in better restaurants to offer at least an espresso or a small alcoholic drink as a small “compensation” (just as a small gesture?) That’s why we recently decided not to have dessert… We would never have thought of something like this! So many of my acquaintances go to the “Ottenthaler” on our recommendation, but I can no longer describe this experience as recommendable…

Ottima schnitzel e servizio molto puntuale, Per la schnitzel: fettina sottile e panaturq leggera. Suggerisco quella indicata come “grande” nel menù. In termini di rapporto qualità prezzo per me è fra le migliori di Berlino.

Der Veltiner von Schnell war spitze, auch wenn wir uns fragen, warum eine Flasche zum 4- 5 flachen des Ek verkauft werden muss. Der Service war zuvorkommend, umsichtig und höflich.

I have known this great restaurant for many, many years. It's always great to eat there! We ate the following: A small Wiener Schnitzel and char. For dessert there was a Kaiserschmarrn, which is world class. However, the prices are quite ambitious.

The food is overpriced but tasty. The worst of all was the 7 euro tap water charge if possible!!! Service good although the blonde girl could be a little more smiley and not push her work! The older lady much better.(plus take a little more care of the appearance, the hair clips, wrong for the image of the shop you want to market...Think a little more about how you work..you earn hundreds euros every day!

I made a last minute reservation and was incredibly happy with the choice. The Wiener Schnitzel was delicious. Large and I’m surprised that I finished the whole thing. The Apfelstrudel was equally great. The staff were lovely and even put up with my broken German. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Authentic Austrian cuisine at high prices, personal and attentive service. Reservation is essential, start time plus 120 minutes are booked. Quality of the food is first class. 2 comments: for still water (€7) I would have liked to have opened the bottle in my presence and not a carafe. If bottles of wine consumed in the restaurant are charged five times the bottle retail price, in my opinion that is grossly overpriced.

Unfortunately I am really very disappointed the service was anything but welcoming. My friend and I were there to celebrate her birthday. Right at the beginning I noticed that all of the guests' jackets had been taken away except for us. But that was just the beginning. After we ordered, I gave my friend her gifts and we immediately noticed that our waitress of the evening looked at us disparagingly from start to finish. When the food came, she put the side dish on my cutlery and then said snidely to me that I should take my cutlery away, but I didn't have time and as stupid as that sounds, her problem is that I am the guest and the cutlery was laid out like that I should please her. The young waitress with the blonde hair and the tattoo on her neck shouldn't work in service because it was anything but good. In the end we wanted to have our food packed and then another great comment came: “You didn’t even eat” and that’s exactly why we wanted to take it with us. I have been a guest several times and the other cellars are very accommodating. I really hope her boss sees this and brings it to her attention. In a restaurant like this, good and respectful treatment of guests should be a given.

We were there on January 15th. Five of us in the Ottenthal and it was excellent. We had a very nice table and Sascha served us. He has just the right amount of friendliness and competence and makes you feel completely comfortable. The food was also very good and we will definitely come back..

Zuerst das Positive: Die Servicekraft war sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend! Sonst läßt sich leider nur wenig Gutes über den Besuch im Ottenthal sagen: Das Kalbsgulasch bestand aus einer äußerst übersichtlichen Portion, die etwa einem Kinderteller entsprach. Die etwa 5 Stücklein Fleisch waren zum Teil dann auch noch fettdurchzogen bzw. bestanden nur aus Fett. Gelungen war dafür die schmackhafte Soße, von der allerdings auch wenige Esslöffel auf dem Teller landeten. Die Spätzle dazu waren wenige, aber sie waren in Ordnung. Eine Beilage - Salat oder Gemüse - sparte sich das Ottenthal. Das bestellte und gereichte kleine Schnitzel sah gar nicht so klein aus, weil die Panade darum herum wie aufgeblasen war und das nur Millimeter dicke Fleisch erfolgreich versteckte. Alles in allem: mehr Schein als Sein. Der Kartoffelsalat dazu schmeckte immerhin, aber ließ halt auch den Gast hungrig zurück. Der Kaiserschmarren am Ende war ok, die dazu gereichte Soße bzw. der Kompott schmackhaft. Zu einem neuerlichen Besuch wird es nicht kommen, da es zu allem Überfluss auch noch ungemütlich kalt war in dem kaum besuchten Restaurant.

“Unfortunately there was no Freid there.” As a “half-Austrian” I love the wonderful Austrian cuisine. The Ottenthal is one of several austrophic restaurants in Berlin. My expectations were high, given the many positive reviews here and elsewhere. However, these were over three courses, two different, open wines and quite disappointed in terms of hospitality. Just one example from the kitchen: “Wiener Schnitzel”. These literally come from the kitchen as “cream puffs” (see photo). It looks spectacular at first, but it has as much in common with Wiener Schnitzel as an inflatable boat has in common with a sailing yacht. There is no cooking secret for anyone who knows what a deep fryer with breading can do. What remains a mystery, however, is how people in Ottenthal manage to process the veal in such a way that in the end it only reaches a thickness in a few places that exceeds 2 mm (but never the thickness of the breading). Unfortunately, the excessively thin stripping of the veal doesn't help the taste at all, but it may be a consolation for the owner's savings account. Regardless, the price charged for the breaded, cloth-thick piece of meat is definitely not too low. However, they don't seem to be aware of any guilt on site, because neither when requesting a table reservation nor on the evening itself does the service make any serious attempt to compensate for the poor quality of the cuisine, at least with Austrian-style hospitality. Consistently below average, removed from my list of good (Austrian) restaurants in the Republic that same evening. Too bad!

Rápido almuerzo tarde entre semana. Elige el pequeño schnitzel de Wiener que viene con un lado que sirve ensaladas de papa y pepino. El schnitzel estaba muy bien cocinado, muy delgado y bien empanado. Había 2 opciones de vino - tinto y blanco. El rojo estaba seco y muy bien encinado. Muy aceptable y maridado bien con la comida. El servicio fue amable, atento y rápido.

Wir hatten vorab einen Tisch online reserviert. Schon beim Betreten des Restaurants fühlten wir uns willkommen. Die Mitarbeiter waren sehr nett und aufmerksam. Das Essen (Rehterrine als Vorspeise, Kässpätzle und Filet vom Saibling, Kaiserschmarrn) war sehr gut. Wir haben uns sehr wohlgefühlt und den Aufenthalt genossen.

Gran comida aquí anoche. La comida y el servicio eran geniales. Tuvimos las albóndigas rellenas de ganso y ternera de Berlín y plato de salchichas, ambos eran excelentes! El sabor de las salsas era fantástico. Nos dieron un poco de pan con una pasta para untar de patata que era delicioso antes de nuestra comida! Terminamos nuestra comida con un delicioso pastel Ottenhaler Sacher de postre y pequeños choc y fresas petit fours complementarios. Recomendaría absolutamente venir aquí y reservar con antelación ya que se pone super ocupado.

The best food from Austria. Never had such good schnitzel before. Extremely tender and great potato salad with it. Everything else was great too. Of course it's a bit pricey but if you have something to celebrate then 100% recommended

My dad said I needed to eat schnitzel during my trip or don’t come home. I’m on team schnitzel now. It was so good. I loved the service staff. I felt very welcome. The atmosphere is cozy and classic.

Was there at short notice for dinner. The price is not cheap, but the quality of the food, the service and the location are absolutely fine. Don't be surprised by the photos, I had the small schnitzel and a 1/2 portion of Kaiserschmarrn. Above all, the friendliness of the staff and their attentiveness were absolutely top. The Wiener Schnitzel was a bit too flat for me personally, but that's purely personal preference. Same with the salt content of the soup, but there were salt shakers. Thanks for the lovely evening!

Volgens recensies zou dit super zijn, maar de snitchel was mooi bl en groot maar meer de paneer was meer als het vlees ertussen. Dus flinterdun stukje vlees , volgens mij niet traditioneel Duits, tevens behoorlijk prijzig

It was the best Wiener Schnitzel I’ve ever had. My German husband is still talking about how it was the best :) It’s probably the best Schnitzel you can find in Berlin. I also loved that you could choose between a small and regular size, for me small size was enough. The potato salad served on the side was perfect as well. The other dishes looked great—we had a pancake dessert with homemade jam. It was quite sweet, but the buttery taste perfectly filled the remaining space in our stomachs.

Enjoyed a really excellent schnitzel once again! A real excellent friendly service. And the food was exceptionally good. The Wiener Schnitzel and the Debreziner Gulyas were really tasty and worth every cent.
