Oma's Küche in Köln

There's simply nothing good to say...the schnitzel was too small (about the size of a dog's face) straight from a hairdresser...the fried potatoes were mushy and small. The price/performance ratio is very different here...there were exactly three canned mushrooms in the mushroom cream sauce. The vegetable stir-fry was amazing, the "stir-fry" was one of those little brown oven dishes from the 80s (really reminds me of Grandma's)....it was an estimated 200g of mushy vegetables for a whopping €16! If the food had been good, I wouldn't have objected to the price...but here "Grandma" should have her great-grandma teach her how to cook again. I don't even want to start on the order and cleanliness of the restaurant and the restrooms.

Unfortunately, a bitter disappointment. I had high hopes for "Grandma's Kitchen" – down-to-earth, warm, customer-oriented. The reality was quite different. The service was inattentive and unfriendly; you felt more tolerated than welcomed. I found it particularly incomprehensible that, as a paying guest, you even have to pay €2 to use the restroom – that's simply unacceptable in a restaurant. I've rarely left a restaurant so annoyed. It's a shame about the actually nice idea – but that's not how you treat guests.

Discovered by chance: Oma Küche, cozy in a side street off Hohe Straße. The traditional, seasonal cuisine looked great at other tables. As a vegan, I only had salad, but the cozy, nostalgic decor and outdoor seating are great. Ideal for a drink and a break from the hustle and bustle.

The place doesn't look attractive, but the sausages we ordered (bratwurst and currywurst) tasted delicious, especially the one with cabbage. In addition, a cold beer and a nice waiter who speaks several languages! Prices are affordable.

So, when I think of Grandma's kitchen, I imagine good, homemade food. That wasn't the case. Unfortunately, the food wasn't tasty; the fried potatoes were anything but crispy, and the meatloaf and schnitzel weren't great either. The service was friendly, and everything went very quickly. The walk to the restroom was a bit of an adventure; the restrooms were piled high with boxes and other items. Not exactly inviting.

Positive: The waiter was super nice and attentive – a real bright spot in the service! Contrary: Unfortunately, the food couldn't keep up. The dishes were overall quite bland – salt and pepper definitely wouldn't have hurt. The tarte flambée at least had some flavor from the spring onions. The meatloaf was unfortunately cold, which completely spoiled the experience. The schnitzel tasted okay, but for €23, the portion was quite disappointing. Unfortunately, the value for money isn't there.

The food was awful! I suspect it was just sachets of sauce... nothing to do with grandma's cooking 😅 I wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all. Spend your money somewhere else! - It can't be as bad as this 😂

Absolutely not recommended! Selling frozen pizza for €14 and marketing it as fresh pizza is a disgrace. The pizza tasted worse than the frozen pizza from Lidl. To make it look fresh, they simply spread arugula on top. The ambiance could also be improved. There was no space, you could hardly move or get up without disturbing the table or your neighbors. Not recommended, don't support this kind of rip-off!

We took a day trip to Cologne today. Unfortunately, we went out to eat here. The Wiener Schnitzel with fried potatoes and Himmel und Ääd (spicy schnitzel) tasted absolutely terrible. Everything was swimming in oil, with no flavor at all. The rest of our visit to Cologne was somewhat marred by this. We felt nauseous after the meal. We hope we didn't catch anything. For €52, I don't want to get food poisoning. We'll never see this restaurant again.

We stopped by Oma's Küche to discover some snack-time specialties. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing on several levels. Let's start with the restrooms: given the establishment's image, we weren't expecting foul-smelling, dirty, and, above all, completely inaccessible restrooms for people with disabilities. A real accessibility problem, all the more regrettable since my elderly mother, who has a recognized disability of over 80%, was with us. Regarding our meal, we had opted for an omelet, which was supposed to be served with potatoes and salad. What a disappointment when it arrived: three tiny arugula leaves on top of the omelet, and burnt potato slices, which tasted unpleasant. My son couldn't eat his plate because the burning smell was so strong and off-putting. We asked for some bread, which clearly wasn't provided. A waiter was kind enough to get some... but he arrived at the end of the meal, so too late, although the gesture is noteworthy. After waiting 1 hour and 10 minutes to be served, we finally paid (55 euros for 3 omelets, 1 water, and two soft drinks). The waiter asked us if we'd like to leave a tip via the credit card terminal. We declined, given the quality of the service, which remains a perfectly legitimate choice. The reaction was completely inappropriate: he violently threw the receipt on the table, without a word or goodbye. Even more surprising, he had left his phone on our table... which I returned to him by calling him. No reaction, not even a thank you. In the end, this meal, supposed to be a pleasant break, generated a lot of stress and discomfort. It's hard not to notice the generally contemptuous behavior, as if our presence was a nuisance. We strongly felt a lack of consideration, particularly towards women, people of color, and people with disabilities. I strongly advise against this restaurant, not only for the quality of the service and food, but especially for the blatant lack of respect and humanity. It would be more than desirable for the establishment to rethink its approach to customer service. Others, in our position, would have reacted much less peacefully. But perhaps it's easier that way, when it's a group of women...

A family run german restaurant the meatloaf was excellent

Discussing duty rosters in front of the audience was very unprofessional. Wilted salad, fried potatoes dripping in oil. Plates simply garnished with wilted herbs. Far too expensive. Mushroom schnitzel covered in mush. Not even close to worth €24.50. At most €14.50, not recommended.

I ate here in Öln with my wife today. It was packed, so I waited 45 minutes for the food to arrive. The Coke Zero beforehand was OK. Ginger tea was just water with uncut ginger carelessly placed in the glass. My wife's meal was: fried potatoes with fried eggs. The fried potatoes were a little greasy, soft, and seasoned with paprika. It was like a pancake, quickly fried with lots and lots of oil. Heaven and earth was lukewarm mashed potatoes with limp onions and crispy black pudding, which was delicious. It also came with a small bowl of apple sauce. After I finished my plate because I was hungry, there was a puddle of grease on the plate. I don't really need more.

Really great food, good but sometimes chaotic service. The prices are reasonable for the downtown location, and the atmosphere is quite sweet. We'd love to come back!

We were warmly welcomed and served here and the food was also very good and plentiful. The gentleman who took our order etc. was really very nice and had the typical Cologne jeck in him. You knew you were in Cologne. Friendly, accommodating and funny.

And if you like, you can enjoy a freshly tapped Kölsch or a classic filter coffee - like before, only better. The service was warm, attentive and authentic - you immediately feel welcome. And best of all: the prices are absolutely fair for what you get. Conclusion: “Grandma’s Kitchen” is not a restaurant, but a feeling. The ambience is certainly a matter of taste – it is done in a “shabby chic” way, which I personally actually liked. Unfortunately, that was the only positive thing about my visit. The salad seemed old, the salad dressing tasted like a standard store-bought sauce. The “currywurst” turned out to be a normal bratwurst with pureed tomatoes and some curry powder – it was far from a real curry sauce. The fried potatoes were extremely greasy and soggy. Unfortunately, the prices were also exorbitant for this quality. My conclusion: Save yourself the money – cooking at home is more enjoyable.

Absolutely overwhelmed staff. Instead of serving, the staff disappears behind a corner and argues. The tables are dirty, we got a wrong dish with a hair in it. The food is edible, but nothing more. Absolutely not recommended!

If I could give 0 stars I would. I went to this place because of the reviews written here but I would never recommend it to anyone. They have 0 sense of costumer service. We came in, my parents and myself, sat down and we waited 10 min to receive our menus, after receiving the menus we waited another 15 mins for the waitress to come and take our orders but he never came. He would pass by and look at our table, there was another lady that was serving but she didn’t even acknowledge us. I was frustrated so I went to the front and ask the waitress to please come and take our orders, he just said ‘yeah, I come’, he never came. I waited another 5 mins at my table, I was looking at him from my table and he literally said ‘come here and order’, I got up and told him I was not coming to the front desk to order, he was supposed to come to my table to get my order like the rest of the costumers. So I just left.

We had dinner there this afternoon. The waitresses were very nice and accommodating. The food wasn't our cup of tea. The pizza was very greasy and tasted like a frozen pizza. The fried potatoes with sauerkraut were very moderately seasoned. We would not recommend the restaurant.

Even one star is too many. The waitress came, picked up some food and immediately wanted to leave. I then called out that I would also like to order some food. If there are two people at the table, I should serve both of them. The waitresses were very haphazard anyway. We ran around with the food and didn't know where to put it. Fried eggs completely burnt and without seasoning. Fried potatoes black and soaked in oil. I also had a hair in my head Lettuce. The salad was also weak and partly brown. Then we paid €10 for a bottle of water. Pizza was garbage too. Dough way too soggy. Never here again.

Employee was very unfriendly. My partner saw a mouse walking at his feet after going to the toilet. That was a reason for us to look for another restaurant. Then the employee came shouting and demanded another €2 (!!!) for going to the toilet. When we explained the reason for our departure, he replied regarding the mice: “You have them in every restaurant in Cologne.” Spoiler: The Italian next door didn’t have any 😉

A good place to eat, the food is nothing out of this world

Wir waren bei einem Freund in Duisburg und sind auf dem Rückweg nach Bornheim in Köln zum Abendessen ausgestiegen. Durch Zufall kamen wir zur Oma's Küche in Köln. Die Bedienung war recht freundlich und zuvorkommend. Meine Frau bestellte Himmel und Äd, ich den Rosenkranz ( Nürnberger Würstchen, Sauerkraut und Bratkartoffeln ). Sauerkraut war kalt, die Bratkartoffeln nicht hausgemacht ( Tüte ). Geschmacklich an der Grenze. Ferner waren der Zugang zu den Toiletten mit Müll zugestellt. In der Nacht Magenkrämpfe und massiven Durchfall bei mir....meine Frau hat in der Nacht erbrochen. Dieses Restaurant ist nicht empfehlenswert. Bin am Überlegen, ob ich nicht das Gesundheitsamt einschalte.

Eenmaal aangekomen vonden we de buitenkant niet echt aantrekkelijk, maar gezien de reviews toch binnengegaan. Vriendelijk personeel (niet duits 🤷‍♂️) en heel behulpzaam. Eten was niet echt lekker lekker. Mijn gehaktbrood was nogal droog, en de schnitzel hard gebakken. Prijs/kwaliteit ok.

So... the ambience was okay, even if it was a bit old, the service was nice and friendly... BUT the food wasn't good at all, it wasn't even worth one star... we've never eaten so badly! The fried potatoes were ready-made fried potatoes soaked in oil that didn't taste good at all with a turkey schnitzel from the deep fryer with instant sauce where a lonely mushroom could be found (it was supposed to be mushroom cream sauce). The Nuremberg sausages were gone, the sauerkraut was overcooked and the mashed potatoes had no taste. The portions were also quite small, so the price/performance ratio wasn't right at all. If we ever travel to Cologne again, we will definitely not visit this restaurant again as it was a big disappointment and would not recommend it.

A great place to network and work, have a beer, and eat delicious food for an entire afternoon. Friendly staff and excellent Wi-Fi. For two people, we spent 4-5 hours there.

I visited for lunch on Sunday. I sat outside. Each seat was decorated with beautiful flowers, which gave a wonderful impression. After ordering, my son spilled his orange juice. Even though I haven't had a sip yet... Then the clerk noticed and brought me a new juice. He also cleaned the floor. My son was very depressed but was very happy to receive the new juice. I had a very happy time in this warm-hearted shop. thank you.

Hello everyone, When it comes to food, I unfortunately have to agree with all previous reviews. I think it's due to the change of ownership 5 years ago. Microwave fried potatoes and deep fryer schnitzel. You can eat it but it's not grandma's cooking. Grandma cooks with love, heart and feeling ;) You don't have to do it again. Maybe arrow the concept a bit and put more effort into it. However, it should be said that the service was extremely friendly and he did his best. The gentleman is doing a good job. LG

Very unspectacular food was very mediocre

Never again! I was in this restaurant and ordered a tarte flambée. Unfortunately, a hair was baked into the dough - so it couldn't be easily removed. When I pointed this out to the staff, my concern was completely ignored. Instead of an apology, I was accused of having reported it “immediately”. What if the hair only becomes noticeable when you eat? A price reduction was also categorically rejected on the grounds: “What is booked is booked.” Absolutely unacceptable! Hygienic deficiencies, miserable service and a waitress who reacted unfriendly and arrogantly. If you value cleanliness, customer friendliness and decent service, you should avoid this restaurant!

Die Currywurst war zu scharf, die Sauce und die Bratkartoffeln wässrig. Nach dem Essen hatten wir Magenkrämpfe und Durchfall. Insgesamt enttäuschend und nicht empfehlenswert.

Good atmosphere and the plate was tasty afterwards

My wife and I travel regularly to Cologne. Same yesterday. After a long time we were craving something hearty again. And instead of going to one of the many breweries, we wanted to eat away from the usual blandness in Grandma's kitchen. This quickly turned out to be a big mistake. The place was full and we were only able to get two seats inside. Next to us was a large group who were having drinks for a birthday. So just drinks. In addition to our table, there were four other tables inside that also ordered something to eat. My wife ordered a “Vienna-style” schnitzel and I opted for the Oktoberfest knuckle with sauerkraut and fried potatoes. After about 30 minutes we got the “R(h)invasion of Cologne”. My wife got a dead fried schnitzel and a side salad with such a thick piece of carrot that you could hardly cut it or bite it. Then my plate came... 😮‍💨 my knuckle with crispy rind was covered with an indefinable sauce, and the meat of the knuckle was still raw in places. The fried potatoes were dripping with fat and weren't crispy and the sauerkraut was missing. I lost my appetite and left all my food behind. It's interesting that the food from the tables outside was also completely returned - meatloaf and something else drowned in sauce. We cannot recommend this store more highly. It would be better if grandma's kitchen only focused on things that you can do too, cooking isn't one of them.
