Mutter Wittig in Bochum

Everything was great – the food, the atmosphere, and the service were all fantastic. Unfortunately, after 120 years, the restaurant will be closing forever at the end of the year. So sad 😢

At my request, we celebrated our annual Christmas party today, December 22, 2025, with about 30 people at the traditional restaurant "Mutter Wittig." I had wonderful memories of this lovely restaurant from my childhood and early youth! Upon walking in, all the memories came flooding back. Every Saturday after the market, Grandma would have lentil soup, and I would have schnitzel. Even the wallpaper, the furnishings, and the furniture were the same after 30 years. I was absolutely delighted! But when the food arrived, the huge disappointment followed! I have never been served such a bad goose! Tasteless and presented without any care! No garnish like pear and cranberries—the sauce was pale and bland. My friend had the same experience! The schnitzel was so awful—any chip shop in Bochum could have done better! ... To be fair, the staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and efficient! But what topped off the whole evening was when, around 9:00 PM, the waiter came and announced: "Last call?" With a party of 30 people? Speechless! As I've learned, this long-established establishment has been taken over by the long-established fashion house Balz! All I can say is – very, very pathetic, Mr. Balz! A little more attention to the kitchen – a small menu (like in the old days), good products, regional and seasonal specialties like: kale, mussels, schnitzel, various burgers, sauerbraten, etc. This beautiful and traditional restaurant would be a sure thing!

The beautiful ambiance offers a cozy atmosphere. Delicious dishes are served, and the selection of drinks is extensive. The service is very attentive and friendly. A visit here is highly recommended.

Good restaurant and good restrooms

A wonderfully cozy, historic venue. Old interior, comfortable nooks, pleasant acoustics, delicious and reasonably priced food, and friendly service.

Nothing special but ok for one time

For many years I visited this restaurant every few months. Then at some point the ownership changed. Since then it has gone downhill rapidly. The last time I was there was yesterday and I noticed once again that the cleanliness and quality of the food have declined considerably. This time and last time the tablecloths were dirty and stained. A feather duster did not do its job throughout the entire restaurant. The women's restroom is in dire need of renovation and the cleanliness there also leaves a lot to be desired. I visited the restaurant around 12 noon, immediately after it opened. The homemade dishes I used to be used to have been replaced by lackluster convenience food. I would particularly like to mention the distorted cabbage rolls yesterday. Since this was not a one-time experience, I will avoid this restaurant in the future.

Once and never again the Mediriane fish plate was terrible ( frozen )

Very rustic!!! Mussels "Rhenish style" in a traditional enamel pot, but the flavor of the broth could have been improved. The sauerkraut casserole from the lunch menu was excellent, just like your mom's. The ambiance deserves a special star...wonderfully old-fashioned.

A very nice restaurant in the heart of Bochum. Here, you can still feel the attention to detail and tradition. The service was very attentive and friendly. The food was brought to the table quickly, but was only lukewarm to warm. Otherwise, the value for money is good, and we can recommend it without hesitation.

Unfortunately, the meal was a disappointment. I had Mutter Wittig's crusty rissoles. It lacked seasoning. The canned mushrooms were completely tasteless. The medallions were the same. A friend of mine had fish, which was apparently quite good. The potatoes, however, were al dente. Another person's rump steak was also terrible. No seasoning. I won't be going there again 🤷‍♂️.

It was delicious, generous portions, reasonable prices, and the retro look was really great.

I had the herring gravy with fried potatoes. The herring gravy was originally from a discount store, cut into bite-sized pieces. The product was worth €3 and sold for €17. This has nothing to do with cooking.

Sixteen of us went to Mutter Wittig's for lunch after our civil wedding, and it was a complete success! The communication beforehand was friendly, uncomplicated, and professional. The food was enjoyed by all ages, from 11 to over 70. We would especially like to highlight the attentive service and the excellent handling of special needs: Our lactose intolerance was accommodated very accommodatingly without any problems. We all felt very comfortable and will definitely be back, perhaps next time in a smaller group :) Many thanks to the entire team!

Today, 17 of us went to Mutter Wittig's for a light meal after the registry office. We had a small room for ourselves but it was open to other guests; the noise level was still very pleasant despite the number of guests. Due to the size of the group, we had a selection menu, and communication on this went smoothly. Everyone enjoyed the food and it was the perfect size. The service was very attentive; however, the waiting times were a little long, even with understanding for the group size. We also found it a bit annoying that the sauces for the schnitzels were served separately, but I'm sure there are people who prefer it that way. All in all, highly recommended, delicious, and worth a visit - thank you very much.

We were strolling around Bochum and were hungry around lunchtime. We decided to try Mutter Wittig because they have a great outdoor area. We had a large salad with king prawns and the Krüstchen (slightly modified – without the fried egg and with fries). The pork medallions were very tender, the fries very crispy, and the prawns were fried until translucent. The service was attentive and quick. We'd love to come back.

What a lovely old fashioned restaurant. You feel like you're eating at grandma's...soooo nice!! Good home-style food of top quality and really nice service! That's why you like to come from Mönchengladbach to visit ;) (Met spontaneously in winter and would love to come back) Tested asparagus dishes today. The asparagus cream soup 20/10!!!! And also the asparagus with the salmon - very tasty :)

Must have something to do with personal demands, but the three of us agreed that there was no need to go there again. Service was slow and not particularly friendly. The food was of snack bar quality, just because of the presentation of the food: plates, fries, pork steak, sausage, salad were delivered later, wilted. When we wanted to pay after twenty minutes, the cellar warned us twice that we had apparently swallowed the food since he had just served.

My wife and I ate creamy vegetarian risotto today... unfortunately... both portions were very, very salty. Far too salty for our taste.

Traditional restaurant with good cuisine and very courteous staff.

We ordered duck in orange sauce with spaetzle and goose with dumplings. The food was cold, the side dishes were too limited and there was hardly any sauce. When we asked the waiter for more, he actually said that the same sauce was served with both dishes. He brought us two gravy boats with an indefinable and tasteless mush. Rarely eaten so badly, at this price (goose €29.90, duck €23.90 an absolute disgrace. Not recommended!

Ordered food to go from Mother Wittig for the first time. Waiting time felt shorter than eating in a restaurant. Everything was packaged very nicely (sauce and vegetables individually). If I had been driving or lived nearby, the food would have been even hot. So unfortunately it suffered a bit. The taste was amazing and the portion was generous. There was the roast goose

It's a bit difficult for me to formulate a balanced review here. The atmosphere is very homely, the waitresses were very friendly and I really enjoyed the food. So why only 3 stars? The food was really tasty, no question – but the portion size was disappointing. As a side dish to the vegetarian pointed cabbage roulade, I had two pumpkin wedges, two kohlrabi wedges, three mini broccoli florets and four mini potatoes on my plate. Since I'd never been to Mother Wittig's before, I thought, okay, it's one of those restaurants where it's delicious, but you just don't get full. But to my astonishment, or to be honest, envious horror, the plate of a person at the next table who had ordered exactly the same dish was full to the brim, really full to the brim. And in addition to the side dishes mentioned, there were also runner beans on the plate. Then I was annoyed that I wasn't one of those people who always took photos of their food. Anyway, when I asked the waitress about it, she explained that the portion size could depend on who was preparing the plates in the kitchen. However, this is absolutely unacceptable to me - guests should be treated equally. Portions should be equally small or equally large. It's a shame, because if the portions had been fair, the restaurant would have left a better impression. But that made me so upset that I probably won't come back.

I ate there for the first time on Monday December 16th, 2024. All of my guests and I enjoyed it. The ambience was rustic, cozy. It definitely won't be the last time you eat there.

Since the tenant changed, unfortunately no longer recommended. The previous chef was great. There was always an excellent vegan dish. Homemade, without frozen finished product. Always worth a visit. Unfortunately, on the last visit there were frozen potato pancakes and slimy mushrooms from a jar. Too bad. I would have liked to remain a regular customer.

We felt very comfortable. The service was very attentive and there was Fiege beer, as it should be in Bochum. Hopefully Mother Wittig and all the trimmings will be around for a long time. There are plenty of kebab stalls.

The waiter was great, super friendly, just great! The food is just disgusting. Not seasoned, not well done, the schnitzel was tough and had a strange color. Absolutely disgusting. And we're talking about a restaurant here! You can eat better in every chip shop.

WOW! Here you have the feeling of being in a good German kitchen! Waiters are smartly and neatly dressed, respond to requests, etc. The rooms are very elegantly furnished and the food is incredibly delicious! Definitely worth a visit!

My mother and my grandmother were there and found the food disastrous. The schnitzel was like the sole of a shoe, the fries tasted like nothing and the croquettes weren't cooked through. Too bad!

Disappointing. At the beginning we were really excited about the location. Were really amazed. Service is okay but one would say that it is very old, not old. The food came very, very quickly, which made us suspicious. Because if everything is made fresh it takes a little longer. Unfortunately it was the case even then, food tasted bland and the way it tasted was probably prepared with some convenience products. It's a shame for 24 euros per dish, I demand freshly prepared products and nothing ready-made. But maybe it should have been a warning to us that a chef was needed... I hope a new good chef will be found. Then we'd love to come back.

Wir sind da eingekehrt, weil wir die guten Bewertungen gelesen haben. An einem Dienstagabend hatten wir einen Tisch um 18:30 Uhr reserviert. Das Restaurant war fast leer, aber der Garten vor dem Haus war voll besetzt. Der gemütliche Innenraum sieht wie bei Oma mit Vogeltapete aus. Wir genossen ein sehr gutes Bärlauchrisotto und Medaillons vom Schweinefilet mir Spätzle und Gemüse. Beide Gericht schmeckten uns sehr gut und wir können das Restaurant empfehlen. Als Nachspeise gab es eine gemischte Dessertvariation

The ambience of the restaurant and the furnishings are beautiful, the staff are very friendly, but the food was absolutely not convincing. My dish was absolutely oversalted and the rice was undercooked. I had no problem returning it and got another dish instead, but unfortunately it was underseasoned. Unfortunately, the quality of the schnitzel also couldn't keep up with the price compared to similar restaurants in Bochum.

Auf Geschäftsreise lag dieses Restaurant nur 300m vom Hotel entfernt und so war es wahrsten Wortsinne „naheliegend“ dort zu Abend essen. Ich war alleine und wurde dennoch sehr freundlich begrüßt und mir einige Tische zur Platzwahl angeboten. Das gewählte Essen war sehr gut und so steht ein weiterer Besuch bei sich bietender Gelegenheit nichts im Wege. Empfehlung!
