The best restaurant in Essen's north. Always worth a visit!

We spontaneously decided to have lunch with seven people from different parts of Germany after a meeting in Essen. One of us is from Essen and was already familiar with the restaurant. The food was good, the service very friendly, and the prices (relative to the quality) significantly cheaper than in the "small big city" in northern Germany where I come from. If I'm ever in Essen again... I'll definitely go back to Mezzo Mezzo.

The food was very good, well-prepared, and flavorful; no complaints there. However, the service completely ruined the experience. The waitress was very rude, spoke aggressively, and brought the dishes abruptly. The wait was long, and several people who arrived after us were served before us. It's clear that tourists are treated less well than regulars, which is a shame for an establishment that otherwise has good food.

The waitress was rude with us because we were tourists. Also, you can't say "fast fast chose a drink, choose a meal faster" to a client, that's just messed up. We were stressed out and the best of it is that I didn't get my meal because they forgot me... I can't even rate the cooking as I didn't get anything. We were also running out of time. So thank you for this bad service. Also I did my best to speak German, and no one knew a word of english here, you have no excuse to be rude with us.

0.75l Pinot Noir in a 0.5l carafe... I've never seen that before ;-) The innkeepers' creativity seems to know no bounds. Keep it up, but without us!

We had dinner at Mezzo Mezzo today with 36 people. The location is very attractive. The service staff was very friendly and prompt. The food was delicious and the prices were fair. Many thanks to the entire team for making everything run smoothly. 🤩

We ate here with a family of eight. The atmosphere is cozy, with a wide selection of pizza, pasta, meat, and fish dishes. Despite being busy, the service was excellent and quick. Plenty of options for vegetarians too. Just go for it!

We were there on Friday with a reservation. 18 people at the Maiclub Ittenbach. The food was excellent. The service was attentive and friendly. We spontaneously went there again today with 18 people, and everything was excellent again. Highly recommended. Thank you for your hospitality.

Pizza Tonno (€10.80) and Fuze Iced Tea (€3.50). The pizza was a good medium size, so it's quite filling. The ambiance is also good. There are restrooms, too. Unfortunately, there was some confusion regarding the pizzas from the waiters and kitchen staff. All in all, a good restaurant, with reasonable prices.

We ate at Mezzo Mezzo and had a lovely evening overall. The pizza was truly excellent, and the mixed grill was plentiful and well-grilled. Unfortunately, the calamari wasn't impressive – it was quite bland, lacking salt and pepper, just a touch of garlic, and no oil. Furthermore, both the calamari and the side dishes and vegetables were covered in rosemary and otherwise unseasoned. The service was a bit pushy at first, as the waiter was standing at the table too often, which was annoying. However, as the evening progressed, we were served by a waitress who was very attentive and friendly – ​​which rounded off the evening pleasantly. All in all, it was a great evening. We'll definitely be back, but this time we'd rather sit on the terrace.

We were lucky enough to be invited to a wedding here. They served a buffet, so we were able to eat our way through the menu. Everything we could eat was some of the best Italian/Greek food we've ever had. The drinks were also excellent. If we ever come back to Essen, we'll definitely stop by!

A favorite place for family and friends: wonderful service: attentive, fast, delicate... and most importantly delicious. I am a meat eater myself 😉 and I really appreciate good cuisine. Every time I come to "Mezo" I am amazed by the skill of the cooks. The last time, I personally ordered a rack of lamb - it was just a work of art on a plate and an unforgettable taste of high-quality cooked meat!!! It's been a long time since I ate such excellently cooked lamb. I give the highest rating 🤓

Had a meal here after an event at the Zollverein. The restaurant is quite large with tables inside and outside on a terrace. The menu is mainly Pizzas and Pasta, with some fish, salad, and grill options also. The service was below average with our food taking some while and basic things we asked for, like a glass for the water we ordered being forgotten. I also asked for some ice for my coke and again it never arrived. The food was again average, I had a spicy salami pizza and it was very wet and soggy and not overly tasty. A colleague ordered the tuna pizza and he returned it as the tuna tasted 'off'. Basically we were not overly impressed with Mezzo Mezzo.

We were at a restaurant recently and were actually looking forward to a nice Italian evening. But just looking at the menu, we weren't sure: Am I at an Italian or a Greek restaurant? The restaurant itself probably doesn't know exactly which cuisine it specializes in. My friend ordered the highly advertised buffalo mozzarella with tomato. What they served was something suspiciously reminiscent of the 80-cent mozzarella from the discount store. If it really was buffalo mozzarella, it was probably from a very unfortunate buffalo. My beef fillet was really good, though – juicy, with a nice grilled flavor. But the rösti that came with it clearly came from the freezer. Especially in a restaurant that presents itself as more "upscale," I would have preferred fresh potatoes. So it was more like a deluxe version of cafeteria meets gourmet. Add to that the noise level was somewhere between a train station concourse and a school auditorium – the romance was unfortunately lost. In the end, it was an evening full of good moments and small kitchen tragedies.

The food was delicious, the prices reasonable. Despite having a reservation, we had to wait quite a while for our food. This was probably due to the school enrollment and other groups arriving at the same time. This made the dining room a bit noisy. The service was polite and made every effort to serve us well. I think Mezzo Mezzo is a very good restaurant. I only live a 5-minute walk away, so it's quite convenient for me. Apart from that, the restaurant is beautifully decorated, and the food is excellent—whether it's pizza, pasta, or meat, everything is delicious and of top quality. Even the restrooms are clean, and my children are always happy when they know they're getting a lollipop. We'll definitely be back.

Nice restaurant, but Unfortunately, the service was poor... We waited more than two hours for the food. Not all dishes were ready because the oven was apparently broken, but this wasn't really communicated. The wrong food arrived. A small child was present, apparently not very welcome. The wrong drinks were also served. The food from the other tables looked very good, but unfortunately, we didn't get to enjoy it.

Delicious food and good service at top prices

Great restaurant. I would rate my grilled dish as good, but others were more enthusiastic.

I had a fish dish, which tasted good, but I had stomach problems for several days afterward. The waitress was very friendly and asked several times if everything was okay. Unfortunately, the acoustics in the restaurant were very loud, making it difficult to have a conversation.

Unfortunately, I can't understand the positive reviews. The vitello tonnato was a disappointment; the taste of cheap mayonnaise completely overpowered the dish. The spaghetti aglio e olio, although al dente, was dry and lacking any noticeable flavor. The salad suffered from the same dryness; a few drops of balsamic vinegar weren't enough to add any flavor. A particular low point was the condition of the restroom: dark, uncomfortable, and despite the darkness, unsightly marks were clearly visible. The clear view into the kitchen on the way to the seat also seemed uninviting. If I had had this before ordering, I probably would have left. On the positive side, the Coke was pleasantly cold, and the staff worked quickly and friendly. Unfortunately, that's not enough for me to visit this restaurant again.

Had the vegetarian pizza, which was good and large (too much for me). Pizza rating: 4.5 It came with a mixed salad. It wasn't bad, average. Salad rating: 4.2 Large terrace. Service was quick and attentive.

We called at short notice around 3 p.m. and got a table for 8 people at 5 p.m. We were all extremely satisfied! The food was delicious, the service friendly, and the food very well organized. Excellent value for money! (Carbonara 12 euros, bottle of wine 18.50 euros, Ramazotti 2.30 euros). Highly recommended, even for large groups. The only improvement we could make: enable online reservations.

Great food and super service at the Day Care Congress in the Haus der Technik

We ate at "Mezzo Mezzo" today after a stay at the Zollverein Coking Plant. We had made a reservation by phone and were completely perplexed that it was so busy at 4:00 p.m. The service was quick and very friendly. The food was excellent and extremely tasty. The value for money was absolutely spot on. Thank you for the lovely stay.

Our visit was on: May 23, 2025 We were smitten by the positive reviews and can only agree. Even without a reservation, it was no problem getting a seat. We also found the servers very helpful and courteous. The pasta was really well-made, the feta cheese was delicious, and the bruschetta was a 10/10! Everything was fresh and truly authentic Italian. We'll definitely be back! Thank you!

We were in the restaurant with a large group of over 20 people. Since the table was pre-booked, we didn't have to wait. The menu is extensive and the range of drinks is also impressive. The food was delicious! I deducted 2 stars for the service because I had to go to the cash register to pay and I had to wait a long time there (smaller tables were brought forward).

An absolute dream – 6 out of 5 stars! The menu is full of great dishes, there is a vegetarian selection, although this is not specifically noted. So you may have to read a little more. We got a free starter: bread with an incredible spread of pepper and shepherd's cheese. I had the “Taglierini e formaggio” – vermicelli with spring leeks in Gorgonzola cream. The sauce was a poem, the pasta was on point – incredibly delicious! The portion was huge and the price-performance ratio was simply great. The tiramisu was also a highlight: homemade, fresh and so good that you would like to bathe in it. I strongly recommend making reservations no matter what day. I am thrilled and will definitely come back – absolute recommendation!

The pizza and salad were good, the pasta dish was rather mediocre. Unfortunately, one of our dishes was forgotten, which is actually forgivable. Celebrated a 60th birthday there, it was very nice, everything was right. A small suggestion from me to please label the food at the buffet. Since I suffer from allergies/stomach disease, it was very difficult for me to recognize what I was allowed to eat. Of course I found something and it was very tasty. The broccoli was cooked perfectly al dente and not completely soft. Can only be recommended!!!!

A great, small and cozy restaurant right next to the landmark of Essen. Here you can eat as a couple, as well as with several or the entire extended family. You should definitely make a reservation a few weeks in advance if you are visiting around certain holidays. Would like to eat here. The food is excellent and prepared to perfection. The staff is very nice, helpful and available at any time. The restaurant can be reached directly from the street, the parking spaces are right next to it and are the same. Like the supermarket next door. There are also children's meals on the menu, these are half portions of the main courses and therefore only cost half. There is no space or children's area here. However, there are also high chairs for very small children.

Great restaurant, even for larger events, very nice, courteous staff, and a nice boss. All in all, highly recommended.

We were here for the first time today and definitely not the last time. ☺️ The restaurant is very comfortably furnished and the service is very attentive and not at all intrusive. I think the prices are absolutely fair and the food we had was very tasty and, in my opinion, the portion size was absolutely sufficient! We would love to come back. (Mini tip from me, you could name the dishes that are outside the regular menu again at the table. They are great and I only saw it by chance, which is how I came across my dish) ☺️

We were there with a group for Christmas dinner. Although the restaurant was completely full with several groups, we received very friendly and impeccable service. The food was good as usual and we were all very satisfied. Unfortunately it was very loud due to the many guests. We still enjoyed the evening.

Ate here twice in October with 3 people, it is a nice place with a good atmosphere, the staff is very friendly, and a joke is easy to make, fast service, good beer, the food is very affordable and tasty and definitely recommended if you are nearby.
