may sound touristy, but is it not! Has great food! Not 5 stars for atmosphere, because on the top floor is very very hot.

One of the quaint, original restaurants in the area. The service is very friendly and helps you get a seat even without a reservation. The atmosphere is correspondingly old but everything is clean and well maintained. Food is very good and the portions are large. Beer is also very fine. It is important that you can only pay in cash, so bring money with you.

Probably the best pork I've ever had (and I've had a lot of pork!)

A rustic, long-established restaurant with home-style cuisine in the middle of Kreuzberg. First things first: The food was good overall (we were a group of 5), unfortunately my meal was a disappointment. I ordered the beef goulash. The meat was OK, but the sauce was way under-seasoned. A generous amount of salt was in order. In addition, it contained the cheapest of all canned mushrooms - for this money you can expect fresh ones, or at least ones that make it difficult to guess whether and how fresh they are. The spaetzle were definitely not fresh, but warmed up, which unfortunately was mainly reflected in the consistency. If I were Swabian, I would cause a real uproar over this spaetzle. Considering that it was "butter spaetzle", the butter wasn't tasty enough. The salad was the opposite of fresh, and lots of vinegar to disguise it didn't help. The tomatoes in it were simply inedible and remained on the plate - even though I usually put up with a lot to eat everything on the plate. The ambience is nice - rough but inviting. It's nice to take a seat and enjoy the high walls. The ambience was created solely by quite a few or very dominant groups of men who drank alcohol in a very humorless manner and kept disappearing into the toilet in groups - most likely not (just) to urinate. These groups belonged in a corner bar and ruined the otherwise great ambience. The service was warm, engaging and there was a lot of laughter. Unfortunately a little messed up. It's a shame, the store used to keep what it promised. There are much better addresses for home cooking.

Although we hadn't made a reservation, the boss was able to organize a place for 5 for us. The food wasn't cheap, but it's worth it compared to other restaurants in the area. My meat platter with pork knuckle, smoked pork, Mettwurst, potatoes, sauerkraut and red cabbage was the finest. The other dishes we ordered were also extremely good.

If you wanna try authentic German food, this is the place! The menu is big enough not to get confused, the place is woody, brown, natural. Service is friendly, sincere, and professional. Most of the time crowded and loud. Dog friendly. The house beer “kreuzberg-something” is fresh, delicious. Totally recommend!

On my first visit to a restaurant with Alt Berlin cuisine, I immediately felt comfortable and... at home as if I had never been anywhere else. The ambience was convincing with old Berlin charm. Above all, the courteous staff rounded off this impression. The fact that payment is only possible in cash supports this flair, even if something modern would be desirable here. The old Berlin specialties, music and ambience were convincing

Not bad. Friendly and welcoming but also a bit robotic and formal. You are reminded multiple times, verbally and via signage, that only cash is accepted. Yes, got it - cash only. A good wiener schnitzel but not the best I’ve had. Nice beers. Slow service. I may come back but not running to.

Sorry, dear team of Max and Moritz. The ambience is wonderful and the service is really good. But that kind of food isn't possible. The Käsespätzle is more than mediocre for a native Swabian. The Rhenish Sauerbraten was a disaster. No, that didn't work at all. Maybe this is an experience for tourists, but food like this is lacking grade.

The ambience is absolutely brilliant. A really nice old Berlin inn. The service is attentive and very friendly. The house beer, Berliner Molle, is recommended. However, the big downer for us was the food and that's why we were there. The pork knuckle was of poor quality. Hardly any meat, lots of cartilage. The fat was gelatinous and inedible. The Kassler was extremely dry. Potatoes too hard. Unfortunately the price didn't justify the performance. Too bad.

We chose Max und Moritz for dinner based on its good ratings. Upon entering, I paused to see if we should wait to be seated or choose a table ourselves. A staff member behind the counter greeted us but didn't guide us further, so we proceeded to find a table. When we reached the large back hall, suddenly a host arrived with guests and was very surprised to see us. He started speaking to us in German, and despite us politely asking multiple times for English, he continued in German. Eventually, we were scolded for seating ourselves and sent back to the entrance to be 'properly' seated. The experience left us a bit shaken. The food was tasty but overpriced, and when paying in cash without leaving a tip, the server simply tossed our change on the table. Overall, a place with terrible service, overpriced food, and not worth the hype. There are so many great restaurants in Berlin – don’t waste your time here!

We’ve been proposed to share the table with other clients (it’s ok) and to pay only in cash when since 2021 European laws oblige any business to accept a correct payment method (fine) and we received a wheat beer when we ordered a brown one (the waiter kindly changed it), and finally the food was nice. Nice traditional german food, but probably some anecdotes made the experience a bit less nice.

We wanted typical Berlin food and here we found it. It was good, yes, but I don't think I'll repeat it. There was a waitress who spoke Spanish with an Argentine accent, who wanted to force us to leave the tip she wanted. In fact, the bill was €93 (3 people), and we put €100 and he told us with a straight face that that was it and that it was customary to leave those tips there. Since it seemed like such a low way to force someone, we left her €2 and she snorted and left with a snort. If I know, I won't even leave her the €2. Today we had dinner somewhere else with a friendlier waiter and this one we left him €6.

Food was really delicious and the staff was super nice. The enviroment is very relaxed. Try the Flammkuchen its amazing.

It was wonderful to eat such good German food again. I had the Ketscher goulash and tasting the dish made me feel like a true German. I would love to come back and the service was very nice.

Excellent for those who want to taste typical German cuisine (gigantic shank, marinated vegetables, etc.) in a characteristic original setting of 1920s/30s Berlin. I found it very dark and sad. I went there because I was in a group with friends who wanted wiener schnitzel. Impossible to have a plate of raw vegetables. The waitress was kind. I wouldn't go back.

Super friendly service, delicious food and good portions

Had a marvelous meal here and was very happy with it. Our waiter was sweet and attentive and did everything right. Sadly, my 1 star results from the owner’s attitude. At one point, he made a weird comment about us not being German (in a touristy city?). When paying the bill, I used cash per their policy. I asked the owner for change, to which he rudely questioned why I wasn’t adding a tip. It’s my understanding tipping is NOT commonplace in Germany. I said no, and requested my change. He aggressively gave me my change and I heard him utter profanity at me as I left the restaurant. If he wasn’t getting a tip before, he certainly isn’t getting one now.

Make reservations, they may be able to seat you as a walk-but it is a small place. The owner Michael came and checked on us.. The food was amazing and the atmosphere great. I had the schnitzel and my husband had the sausage. The restaurant has been in business forever. It i local and excellent.

Had some very nice German pilsner here. Only stayed for a drink. The inside looked very old. I enjoyed my experience here. The only drawback is that we had to be seated to be served. I went to the bar and was sent to a seat. Then I had to go and ask for a menu, then I had to get up again to ask to pay the bill. It would be much easier to get served at the bar and pay for the drinks.

Food and service was decent but definitely could use some fans inside as it was exceptionally warm and uncomfortable. The steak was amazing and I would highly recommend their in house beer.

The food was ok! But the service was way below any expectations! To be a big restaurant in the center of Berlin, very big, with lot of pretentious and at the end to say to the clients that you are accepting only cash, and to send the clients to a cash machine outside in the rain it is unbelievable and unacceptable! Having in the bar a card reader POS!!!! We were totally taken by surprise!!!! Unpleasant surprise!!!!

After thinking about where to eat Knuckle (star dish of German cuisine) and searching for "Eisbein" on the Internet, I decided on this restaurant with such good reviews. The place is far from everything that can be visited by tourists, so you will have to take the bus (it is recommended to take an ABC transportation card for just under €12/day to be able to go wherever you want). It is a rather peculiar restaurant. It preserves old decoration, tables with candles, it barely has any lighting, several of its own beers, they do not accept bank cards for payment (and they warn you about it) and it is very authentic. There is a waiter who speaks Spanish/Spanish perfectly and another waitress who also understands it well, so you won't have any problems with the language. If by chance you don't have cash, say that right in front there is a generic ATM-type ATM with its fees, etc... Beginning lesson: They serve the knuckle with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, but it is BOILED KNUCK. It is not toasted, which for my taste, greatly loses the grace of the crispy outside. The price of the dish is approximately the same as in the rest of Berlin, about €22/dish. Then a pint of beer is around €5-6. There is not an abundance of appetizers to choose from, although you won't need them either, because with the plate they bring you there is food to bore. In fact, they bring you complimentary bread and cheese spread. So for €30, you can try this German delicatessen with a drink and coffee. But remember: DO NOT PUT IT IN THE OVEN 👎

The most friendly host I’ve encountered in Germany in my 21 years of visiting. Great cocktail selection and a divine vegetarian ravioli on a bed a spinach with tomatoes in a cream sauce. Pork with red wine and plum sauce and potatoes. Can’t remember but what our friend had but we all enjoyed. So Americans we had this and drinks for under 80 euros. Unheard of in a major US city. Can’t believe prices are so low and not complaining. Kreuzberg had changed so much in those 21 years, but still has some grit left

Had a really great time at Max and Moritz, despite it being incredibly busy and us needing to wait for food for about an hour. We had a table outside and enjoyed a good weather. The staff was really friendly and when the food finally arrived it didnt disappoint. It wasnt the best Ive tried (especially the soup, thought it wasnt the best and could be bigger for the main dish) but we really liked the experience. Schnitzel and bread were awesome.

A nice old restaurant. I grew up with stories about Max and Moritz. The paintings of Max and Moritz's stories on the walls took me straight back to that. Overall, it was nicely decorated here, just a little too dark for me (but this could also have been because we arrived shortly after opening time and therefore there wasn't much going on). Everyone in our group seemed to enjoy the food and there wasn't really anything to complain about. Unfortunately, card payment was not possible (although I don't know whether this is the permanent situation or whether the device just failed that day). However, this was only a small hurdle as there is an ATM directly opposite. Conclusion: Gladly again!

I take all my first time visitors here. This place is over 100 years old and only one of 12 businesses that services the bombing from WWII. The food is fantastic, service is friendly. This is very traditional German cuisine and there is something here for everybody.

The vibe and service were both superb. The food wasn’t as good as expected. Steak was okay but goulash soup was big disappointment. The menu said “spicy goulash soup” however I got some semi-clear broth with potatoes and pieces of soft salami. In taste i felt mostly just the potatoes. Weird. For the price I would expect much better. Also i don’t appreciate the “cash only” model - even though it’s communicated in advance. I consider it customer-unfriendly.

A gorgeous traditional German restaurant and an absolute must-do when in Berlin! The portions were huge and all traditional German dishes (vegetarian and meat options). Fab beer and lovely staff who provided excellent service!

Spaetzle with pork fillet and red wine plum sauce was excellent and so was the Molle and Dad Barre Pilsener.

I noted that the venue was a bit shabby: peeling paint, lightbulbs not functioning, a bit worn overall, but I thought that that was just the vibe. The staff were super friendly, so I was willing to give it a chance. But I was unfortunately very underwhelmed by the quality of the food. Large portions, I'll give them that, but meat with very little flavour. We had the Eisbein and Rippenspeer. Had it been standing, stewing too long? Likely. The salt and meaty goodness had dissolved away. The kraut was vinegary, likely not lacto-fermented. The mustard wasn't great. It was all just lacking on the umami flavours of traditional fare that I was expecting. A bit disappointing. The beer, however, was fabulous! My advice? Focus more on the food quality and perhaps give the place a lick of paint. Your staff are great.

Really good Restaurant! The food is home made, and is very tasty! We had Käsespatzen, Königsberger Klopse, and Flammkuchen. (Also the really fresh Bread is perfect) Our Service was really polite and nice. The ambiente is really nice but the room is very big and loud. All is all everything was perfect, I would reccomend it for your visit in Berlin! :D

Vi besøgte stedet til aftensmad. Det er meget stemningsfulde lokaler som angiveligt ikke er ændret de sidste 100 år. Der var mange gæster men stadig masser af plads. Det er en stor restaurant med plads til store selskaber. Min kæreste fik en schnitzel og jeg fik en tarte flambe. Restauranten tager kun mod kontanter. Det eneste der trækker ned er at vi betale 8 euro for to glas vand.

High price range unfortunately not high quality

We ordered two dishes. The Roastbeef was delicious, including the sauce and toppings. The pork knuckle was well cooked, however the accompaniments were a bit monotonous. The service was friendly, but there was a certain insistence on ordering drinks. Another negative point is that credit or debit cards are not accepted. Payment must be made in cash.

The food is good, the atmosphere is right, even if in my opinion the place is a bit dark.... The prices are right... menu also in Italian.....but they ask for payment only in cash.. .

Restau de caractère, accueil et service aimables, on mange des spécialités berlinoises, copieusement servies, et à des prix très raisonnables ; possibilité de petites ou grandes portions ; nous avons pris le jarret de porc et le rôti de porc , servis avec choucroute, pommes de terre, purée de pois cassés.... Bon choix de bière pour accompagner . Excellent rapport qualité-prix ( 2 plats + 1 pinte + un grand verre de vin = 53 euros ) .

Curiosa la genesi della mia cena in questo ristorante…sono partito dalla Francia in macchina per partecipare ad un compleanno a Berlino. Due mila km in 60 ore. Al compleanno si è capito presto che si sarebbe mangiato pochino, così ad un’ora ragionevole mi sono sganciato per cercare il primo posto a caso dove saziarmi in maniera soddisfacente. Mi sono imbattuto in questo ristorante che mi ha fatto un’ottima impressione. Gli ambienti interni sono molto suggestivi, così come il menù. Ho preso una zuppa di patate non vegan, perché esiste questa opzione, ed una bella roulade di manzo. Sono stato molto ben trattato, mi sono molto saziato, ho speso decisamente poco. Sempre molto fastidioso il costo esorbitante dell’acqua. Una bottiglia da 75 cl costa più di molte pietanze in carta. Bisogna rassegnarsi.

I was at Max&Moritz Essen with a friend on Monday, now for the second time. From start to finish, it was a wonderful evening. The food was again very tasty and the restaurant has the best staff I have ever experienced. The atmosphere is very quaint and cozy. And the man behind the bar (on Monday) conjures up the best drinks 😊! We'd love to come back!

This was the best beers and food that we had our entire time in Berlin. We had asked our guide for recommendations and he told us to go here. I would show up early of you don't have reservations because it does fill up quickly. Everyone spoke enough English that it was no issue for us. If you only have a short time in Berlin this place should be on your list!

Comida muy buena. El chico que hace las reservas un 10 súper amable y atento, no teníamos reserva y nos ánimo a tomarnos una cerveza mientras miraba si podríamos cenar allí que al final fue que si. Las camareras en general todas muy majas menos una pelirroja que la propina que dejamos no le parecía la correcta y nos tiro unas monedas a la mesa... Por lo demás todo genial.

Very nice and classic Wirtshaus. Food was good and, especially, the service was super good. Staff was very nice and friendly. Expect to have a hearty meal and good beers at this restaurant.

Very rude and unhelpful staff. We arrived at peak time so you can understand the stress. But in any case it is a sin when one does not feel welcome and for no particular reason. We didn't eat and changed places TOTALLY UNFRIENDLY

Paid around 100eur for a dinner for two with drinks, staff called us "arschloch" when they got no tip. Food was allright, wait wasn't too long. Would however not go again.

The food and service were great. Delicious, more than adequate schnitzel and a good mood, attentive waiter. Later on it gets very loud in the back bar.
