Maulaffenbäck in Würzburg

I've been there twice in quick succession and had mixed impressions both times. On our first visit in the evening, we had a reservation but still had to wait about half an hour for our table – it was very busy, so that was understandable. However, the food arrived at different times, so the first guests had already finished by the time the last plates were brought. Also, the soup initially lacked a spoon, which only arrived after some time, when it had already cooled down a bit. The food tasted okay, but nothing special. The staff were friendly but seemed a little overwhelmed. On our second visit at lunchtime, when there were fewer guests, things unfortunately didn't run quite smoothly either. Apparently, there were some minor coordination issues in the kitchen: some dishes initially arrived without a side dish, and the cold side dishes were only brought out later. The soup and sausages were missing bread – if it wasn't included, a quick heads-up or inquiry would have been appreciated. Sausages with sauerkraut without any side dish seem a bit incomplete otherwise. I really hope that the team and the owner will soon get things running smoothly again – the restaurant has the potential to be really good.

Update 11/2025: We always visit Maulaffenbäck during our annual trip to Würzburg. This year was no exception. The ambiance has deteriorated; there was loud music, which was turned down upon request. The wine selection is good, appropriate for Würzburg. The food was okay. But it hardly resembles our former favorite haunt anymore. A real shame! 2023: A wonderfully quaint and traditional Würzburg inn. The menu is extensive and delicious. Our personal highlight is the Rupfbrot (a type of rye bread), which pairs perfectly with a nice glass of wine.

Great food at a very fair price. The liver dumpling soup is highly recommended. They also have good wine. I can also recommend the vegetarian option, which was bread dumplings with a creamy mushroom sauce. They also have many traditional dishes.

Unfortunately, it's no longer what it used to be. We were extremely disappointed with the salad plate; given its size, you could say it was a side salad. What a shame!

Food tasted just okay. Pretty sure the chicken on the salad came pre-cut and pre-cooked to the restaurant. Same goes with the späztle and goulasch.

We last visited this wine bar two years ago, which we regularly visited two or three times in the fall during our short trips. As people from the Lower Rhine, we weren't aware of the change of ownership, but when we first visited on Sunday, we were appalled by the ambiance. The little place is no longer cozy at all; the lighting is cold, the table decorations consist of dirty felt placemats, the window is covered in dust, and the plants are withered. The wine is okay, but the food is rather subpar. The goulash soup was cold twice, and the sausage salad could have come from a discount store. After these experiences on Sunday and today, we checked the reviews too late, and the new owner seems to have learned nothing from them in the last few weeks. What a shame!

The visit was okay! The food was quite tasty, but nothing special that you'd want to go there again. The pretzel, however, was so dry, as if it had been sitting open for two days. On the other hand, the wine was good and tasty, and the place looks great, nice and cozy and quaint! All in all, it's worth going there, but there are better places.

Absolutely terrible!!! My second visit there, and I was extremely disappointed. The staff don't wash their hands regularly. There's an Indian in the kitchen who doesn't know anything about cooking, and an English-speaking waitress at the counter. Very disappointing for a German restaurant where no one can recommend a local restaurant, let alone hold a conversation with you. The manager herself addressed us very directly and impersonally. The food was cold and tasteless, clearly frozen food... Nice restaurant, but very poor service. NEVER AGAIN!!!

We were neither thrilled nor disappointed by our visit. The menu offers a sufficient selection, and the wine list even more so. The food was fairly average, but the dumplings were really small and the coleslaw was simply pre-made. The service was neither particularly good nor bad: the first round of drinks came very quickly, but there was no second round because no one bothered to look after us after the main course was served.

It's very important that this traditional restaurant is reopening. The wine selection is very good. The service is very friendly. The blue wines were good. Overall, there's still room for improvement, especially with the food. But that will surely happen. Good start, keep it up!

I ordered the daily special, "Matjes fillet, homemade style, with boiled potatoes," advertised on the blackboard. After a 20-minute wait, I was informed that they didn't have boiled potatoes. As a responsible restaurateur, I would have personally taken care of restocking the potatoes!!! Unfortunately, that's not the case here. Too bad. The table decorations are dead. A potted plant in a plastic pot. Better not have anything!

The Hausschoppen (house wine) is very good. You had to search for the mushrooms in the bread dumplings in creamed mushroom sauce. Still, it tasted good. The sauerkraut in the bratwurst with sauerkraut was 1) cold and 2) very dry. The table decorations consist of dried heather – which was already crumbling – in a plastic container. Really cheap. So, not what it used to be.

I ate there with my family on a Saturday evening in August during a short visit to Würzburg, without a reservation. The service was very friendly and quite prompt. Drinks arrived very quickly, and the food didn't take long to arrive either. Unfortunately, two of our three portions were cold. However, the service was very quick, friendly, and responsive, with two new portions arriving warm shortly afterward. Even though something like this shouldn't have happened, the service was simply good and responsive, given that the restaurant was full. I would definitely eat there again.

Unfortunately, I read the almost exclusively negative reviews since the change of ownership too late, otherwise I could have avoided a huge disappointment. I ordered a large salad plate with fried mushrooms, which I had been very enthusiastic about years ago. Back then, it was a huge portion of various, fresh, homemade salads with delicious herby mushrooms. The new owner's interpretation is this: half a pack of ready-made mixed salad served in a side salad plate, on top of which were tiny, bland-tasting, fried-to-death mushrooms that were already cold. And all of this for the more than outrageous price of almost 15 euros!!! You shouldn't expect anything from the drinks either. Anyone who orders a lemon-raspberry lemonade for 6.90 euros (!) naturally assumes the drink is made with fresh fruit. Instead, you get a ready-made lemonade with some kind of artificial raspberry flavor added that's very reminiscent of Ahoj-Brause. Personally, I would be ashamed to death to offer my guests something so inferior at such prices. It's actually predictable that something like this can't last long, which is a shame for such a traditional inn.

If you want ready-made meals at outrageously high prices, this is the place to go. A few years ago, the food here was fresh and absolutely worth the money. But now you have to wait forever for ready-made meals and pay far too high prices.

It only reopened two weeks ago. It'll probably take a while until it gets back up and running...

Our visit to Maulaffenbäck after the change of management unfortunately proved to be a huge disappointment. Although the dining room was only moderately busy after lunch, over ten minutes passed before we were even noticed by the waiter. The employee seemed less concerned with customer service than with her cell phone. When the food was finally served, I received a completely different dish than the one I ordered without any prior notice. When I asked, I was simply told that my desired dish wasn't available and that they didn't know why it was on the menu. This information would have been necessary when ordering, of course – then I would have chosen an alternative myself and not let the kitchen decide what to serve me. My complaint was dismissed with an unprofessional "I didn't check the menu, I have no idea why that's there." Furthermore, the bill still showed the more expensive, non-delivered dish, which was only corrected after I pointed it out. Also irritating: A kitchen employee at the counter was filling the salad bowls directly from a plastic bag. It wasn't clear whether the salad had been washed beforehand; the impression suggested otherwise. All in all, a disappointing visit that unfortunately failed to realize the potential of a quaint wine bar. Under these circumstances, we won't be returning.

We stopped by for a glass of wine shortly before 10 p.m. The atmosphere was gone! There were still napkins on the empty tables...unloved plants in plastic pots. The staff were in sweatpants—everything was simply awful!

With the change of tenant in July 2025, the Maulaffenbäck's soul, which was still evident under the previous owners, Kern-Brand, unfortunately also disappeared somewhat. I really don't like writing bad reviews, but this time it was another one that didn't elicit too many positive things from my virtual pen. One of the bakery's trademarks – the Roman glasses poured to the brim with plastic monkeys hanging from the rim – has now been abandoned, just as the previously mostly decent to good quality of the regional food has been abandoned. That, too, has changed. Neither in Franconia nor in Upper Bavaria have I ever been served roast pork where the two manageable slices of meat were just 5 to 6 millimeters thick. It was tender, but it had little to do with roast pork. The very compact, rubbery dumplings – not freshly made like their predecessors – were purely a filling side dish, lacking any enjoyment factor. Only the coleslaw was convincing in terms of taste (whether it was truly homemade is debatable). Things aren't running smoothly with the staff either. Sure, the shortage of skilled workers is often used as an excuse. It may also need a bit of a start-up after the relaunch. But a turnaround also requires a great deal of motivation and enjoyment of the work, and that wasn't evident that day. With a more ambitious chef and a manager who, as a stand-in for the absent landlord, might also be a bit more of a hostess to customers instead of sitting at the counter exclusively surfing social media on her tablet and phone, perhaps a fresh start could be made, and the restaurant deserves a second chance. If things continue like this, the Maulaffenbäck will surely need new tenants soon, because (thankfully) guests are no longer willing to put up with everything at the prices now charged in restaurants. Never change a running system - the previous owners did a better job.

Super delicious cheese spaetzle. The service is incredibly friendly.

Simply awful. The food doesn't taste good, the prices are way too high. The server dropped the fries from her plate. She took them from the table and placed them on the plate. After 10 minutes, they noticed that the coleslaw was missing. Not recommended.

It reopened last week. With a new concept, it features a small menu and a large wine and beer selection.

Our experience at the newly opened Maulaffenbäck was marked by a totally overwhelmed and stressed waitress who had to ask several times because she couldn't remember the two dishes we had ordered (a potato soup and a sausage salad). We received the potato soup about 45 minutes after the sausage salad; it was served in a side dish, a joke for €6.90. We hope that the quality will improve in the next few weeks, as the restaurant is quaint and very nice.

Unfortunately, AfD slogans were tolerated by a large, heavily intoxicated group.

Simply awful. We were there yesterday and were really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, we were bitterly disappointed. The service was abysmal. At first, you had to wait a very long time to even be served. Then the waitress tried to lighten the mood with a completely inappropriate joke. In other words, after 10 minutes of complete disregard, we asked if we could order something, and the answer was, in all seriousness, "I have to think about it." After considerable irritation, we ordered, among other things, a bottle of Rotling (also stated on the menu). We were given three glasses, with the comment that it tasted better. However, it turned out that the prices for the bottled wine weren't fixed, and therefore three glasses were brought to the table. We'd never experienced anything like it. The ambiance also doesn't really compare to the previous Maulaffenbäck. The room feels very cold. We won't be back for a while.

The Maulaffenbäck has raised the food prices quite drastically, which is not that unusual; inflation and higher energy and personnel costs are not leaving the catering establishments unscathed. Why only the cheapest ingredients are used in the €20 salad is incomprehensible to me. You can order it again. The vegetarian vegetable plate for €22 consisted of completely tasteless frozen vegetables that hadn't been cooked long enough, a few potatoes and far too little sauce: worth about €1.50, taste 0. Why would you go to a restaurant for something like that, that was our last visit.

Pensioner's Snack and Pricing In the summer of 2020, this snack was still available for €6.90. After several "price adjustments," the price for the Pensioner's Snack (a pair of white sausages, a pretzel, and a wheat beer or house pint) landed at €11.20 in June 2024. This offer has since been discontinued, and you now pay €16.90 for the same item (white sausage €11.50 and wheat beer €5.40). A 50% price increase. Pretty steep.

Quaint restaurant with funny slogans on the doors and walls. Overpriced food with poor quality! Ordered pork knuckle (pork knuckle); The meat was tough and barely came off the bone, and the side dumplings were sticky. The schnitzel with fried potatoes for €19.90 wasn't butcher-quality, but a ready-made product fried in a deep fryer. Never again!

Anyone who comes in here probably knows what they're getting into. You shouldn't be afraid of space or contact. The food and wine are delicious, the prices are ambitious. The conditions are attentive and resolute at the same time. Parking directly on site is not possible.

Rustic restaurant with delicious food and super nice service. Native speakers and tourists meet at a table because you can move together without making a long face. That's just how it is here. The food was excellent, our dog was even served a Wienerle on a plate - on the house, of course.

Excellent German cuisine with rude service I went to this restaurant for dinner with my girlfriend during a day in Würzburg. The restaurant is located in the historic city center along an internal street. There are some tables outside. The interior is large and furnished in perfect German style. I had a plate of roast pork with roast potatoes and sauerkraut. I found the meat tender and very tasty. I accompanied dinner with a medium beer from the area. The prices are honest, the only flaw was the rudeness of the waitress who seemed irritated every time we asked for information.

Rustic and historic wine bar (special feature: “Bäck”) in Würzburg. Actually the last establishment of this traditional type in the city. Here you can "watch the people's mouths" - which means that people from Würzburg and from outside meet here for happy hours and nice conversations. Excellent wines with the “mouth on the edge of the glass” and equally excellent food. You just have to be there!

Ambience great, seating a bit tight, but still ok. Staff friendly. The food, however, does not rise above a mediocre canteen standard.

Typical Franconian cuisine in one of the traditional houses in Würzburg! Far away from the hustle and bustle of tourists and without any airs and graces, I was able to enjoy the delicious food on the terrace in the beautiful weather. What bothered me personally was the one-dimensional wine selection - a shame for such a great location. Still a real recommendation with warm hospitality.

It is one of the best Weinstube in the city, the atmosphere is super cozy and the staff is very attentive. You can pay by card or cash. Impeccable toilet services. Your 4-legged friend is welcome.

Well, that's a Franconian economy. Here we laugh and chat, it's a joy. Service is top, friendly and with a suitable saying on the lips. Wine is great... you can try it out and be amazed that everyone enjoyed it... in disbelief, because that can't actually be true, you start all over again. ... Meanwhile, the pile of little monkeys is getting bigger and bigger and you have a passion for collecting to get hold of all the colors. So another winemaker's cocktail and a quick tarte flambée because the basis is slowly failing. Huiuiui ... both delicious too ... while I'm still in control of my senses, I pay, put my favorite monkey in my pocket and make my way home, exhilarated, tipsy and in a good mood.

We visited our children in Würzburg at the weekend and had dinner at Maulaffenbäck in the evening. We really enjoyed it there The service was very, very friendly and accommodating. The food was great, everything was very nicely prepared and delicious. We sat outside until it got dark and didn't feel like leaving, just very idyllic with all the beautiful lights, just a nice, warm atmosphere The atmosphere. Locality is described in Günter Huth's crime novels. Unfortunately too full. The Silvaner soup was rich but unfortunately too sweet. The Scheurebe on the Main Bridge for 5.20 euros tastes better than the box bag Scheurebe, which is served here for 7 euros.

Ate there yesterday and unfortunately didn't have a good experience. The Franconian cult dish was served at 7:20 p.m. “Schäufferle” no more. The alternative, the Jägerschnitzel, was not only dry but with ready-made sauce and side dishes from the large catering industry. The biscuit that came with the tea confirmed this; the industrial company was beautifully printed on it. The staff's reaction to the feedback was received quite unemotionally and seems to be normal. There was no apology or response. Presumably many of the guests are travelers and so the store remains full either way. The icing on the cake was the volume; the person directly opposite could only be talked to by shouting. All in all very disappointing for canteen canteen food, which is sometimes more convincing. The salad, which made a fresh impression, was rated as good, only the canned corn was a bit annoying.

Our experience last night was twofold. The atmosphere in the business was very pleasant, with a mixed audience from students to seniors, which created a cozy atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food was very poor. I was looking forward to the Schäufele, but was disappointed. The overpowering scent of cloves and the excessive taste of cloves in the red cabbage were not pleasant. The meat was tough and dry, the rind rubbery. It's a shame, worst Schäufele I've had so far.

Wir waren gestern mit 11 Personen zu Gast, im Maulaffenbäck in Würzburg. Man kann diesen Abend mit nur einem Wort beschreiben "Perfekt"! Das Ambiente super, die Bedienung Super, das Essen Super. Wir hatten verschiedene Biere und Weine, wobei der Eichstrich anscheinend nur als Empfehlung diente und der humorvolle Kellner dennoch die Randvollen Gläser ohne zu verschütten servierte. Die verschiedenen Essen kamen gleichzeitig, die Portionen waren groß und alle waren sehr zufrieden. Auch der Hund unserer Freunde hat einen Wiener (nach Anfrage der Bedienung) bekommen. Als Krönung des Abends gab es noch einen Weinbergs Pfirsich Likör, der nicht zu überbieten war. Vielen Dank für diesen gelungenen Abend, wir kommen sicherlich wieder.
