A fantastic evening! I had the great pleasure of dining at Matsuri with colleagues from Germany, Japan, Greece, and France. Delicious fresh sashimi, combined with the unforgettable service of the eccentric chef. My colleagues from Japan were impressed not only by the taste but also by the entire presentation. I highly recommend it and send my warm regards to the chef!

The boss is like a funny late-night canteen shop in Japanese comics. Although he has a lot of rules (and I learned a lot), he is very humorous and loves to joke, which I love so much! I didn't like the communication style of the place owner. It's way too "strange" and a little bit rude at times. Not funny or entertaining at all. The service is very slow. Limited selection of dishes. The fish tasted quite OK, but not more than that. They try to be stereotypically "authentic", but the overall customer experience is not comparable to true Japan or even other Japanese restaurants in Germany

Fish is just fine, a bit more than good, nothing extraordinary. The owner is rude and unpleasant. I guess some might find charm in it. The atmosphere sucks. The restaurant smelled tobacco. Do not get fooled by the “real japanese” experience. Closer to it than the average place, far from being outstanding.

What a pleasant surprise. I bumped into this place via google maps almost by chance. The restaurant is located in a quiet street next to the financial district but it doesnt stand out. It is a quirky little place run by a very friendly and bombastic japanese couple. The menu is quite simple consisting of mostly cold dishes: sashismi, maki rolls and miso soup. The quality of the sashimi was out of this world and we were entertained by the japanese owner.

Ein ausschließlich auf rohen Fisch spezialisiertes Restaurant mit einem japanischen Besitzer und bei Tripadvisor auf Platz 3 für Sushi-Restaurants, da sollte eigentlich nichts schiefgehen können. Der Besitzer ist ein echtes Original. Mit einem sehr eigenen Humor weist er seine Gäste ein, auch wenn nicht jeder Gag aufgrund der Sprachbarriere zündet und es zum Teil unangenehm wirkt Bei angenehmen Sommertemperaturen wurden wir im Außenbereich platziert. Das Ambiente wirkte sperrmüllartig; recht bunt zusammengewürfelt, Plastikplanen zum Nachbargrundstück, Tische aus Kunststoff und etliche in die Jahre gekommene handgeschriebene Verbotsschilder. Hier hätten wir eigentlich auf der Stelle umdrehen sollen, aber in etlichen asiatischen Restaurants wird kein Wert auf das Ambiente gelegt. Der etwas besser aussehende Innenraum war auch keine Alternative, da alle Gäste ausschließlich im Außenbereich platziert wurden und der Gastraum nach Zigarettenrauch stank (ich vermute mal, der Chef raucht hier außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten). Die Toilette hat ihre besten Zeiten sicher auch schon länger hinter sich. Die Zweitverwendung als Lagerraum müsste wirklich nicht sein. Wirklich wichtig ist natürlich das Essen. Da es nur Rohfisch gibt, fallen Spezialitäten wie Tempura, japanisches Schnitzel und auch neuerliche Dinge wie Avocado oder California Rolls weg. Die Konzentration auf das Ursprüngliche klingt gut, ist dann aber doch etwas fad. Der Salat vorab und die Miso-Suppe waren gut. Die gewählten Fisch-Spezialitäten (Sashimi, Norimaki, Chirashi, Lachs-Thunfisch) waren aber bestenfalls durchschnittlich. Der Fisch war durchgehend in recht kleine Stücke geschnitten. Einiges wirke auf mich von nicht bester Qualität und schon etwas angetrocknet. Für uns war das Essen eine Enttäuschung; wir haben auch in Frankfurt schon deutlich besser gegessen. In Kombination mit dem Ambiente und den Preisen sicher keine Empfehlung.

Echte Japanische Kost im Herzen Frankfurts! Von einem japanischen Ehepaar betrieben. In der Küche hört man nur Japanisch, eine Seltenheit in dieser weiten Ferne. Die Speisekarte ist begrenzt und der Koch hat seinen eigenen Humor, aber ist Teil der Erfahrung. Die Speise ist nicht günstig, aber sie ist frisch und von bester Qualität. Hat mich sehr an meine Zeit in Japan erinnert.

A real japanese experience. No Philadelphia cheese or mayo ingredients. Raw fish only. Great quality raw tuna. Loved it! Would definitely come back and recommend to others. If you want to experience something different than "western japanese restaurants" it's the place to go.

Authentic sushi restaurant serving top quality raw fish. Casual atmosphere run by an eccentric chef from Japan who will tell you that they do not serve 'avocado rolls' and that you should not put your wasabi in soy sauce. If you can't deal with that, don't go here and ruin it for the people who appreciate Japanese food done the proper way!

Long waiting time, food quality is good

You have to have some humor yourself to appreciate the swagger of the chef. It is someone who respects and loves the food he prepares and hope whoever eats it feel the same way. He spends time ‘teaching’ every table that wasabi and soy sauce should not be mixed together for a better experience. I personally enjoyed him doing so as it created some more communication between the chef and customer. Not to mention the million hand drawn posters emphasizing that he sells only raw fish, no avocado no vegetarian etc. which cracked me up so badly ( if you look close enough there are tiny spelling mistakes everywhere🤣) One last thing, very nice nostalgic music!

The quality of the fish is really good, the restaurant was full and we wait a bit but the owner was really nice and give to us a shared starter for our table. I highly recommend this restaurant, both for the food and the service.

This was my second time in this restaurant and it was equally amazing. The fish is delicious, super fresh, the environment is just what you would expect to find in a traditional Tokyo sushi place. The chef and its wife are both so nice, and try to teach you the correct way of eating what they serve to you. This is a restaurant for you to learn how to enjoy sushi the proper way and you should accept the chefs humour and knowledge. If you go with the vibe of the chef, you will have an amazing time. This was just like being back in Japan. The food was fantastic, the service was sublime and the boss in the kitchen was great fun. Each dish was well explained (in English and Japanese, depending on your preference), and the quality really was top notch. If you like sashimi, you absolutely need to visit. Just be aware that you can only book two days in advance by giving them a call. It's a relatively small restaurant so I'd definitely recommend booking to avoid disappointment

A small restaurant in Frankfurt that deserves more recognition. There seems to be only one chef who cares great care of the quality and taste of the food. As there is one chef only, a long time is required for the food to come out, yet the quality of food made us forget the waiting. He has great humour, and explains to us how to best enjoy the food in an authentic Japanese style. This is the BEST Japanese restaurant in Frankfurt!

Best sushi in town, but not for everybody. The owner is quite a character who takes a lot of pride in what he does. It is not only about the food, but how to eat it which he teaches you. If you do not like that or want california roles or mayonnaise on your sushi this is not your place. If you want to take the journey, it is worthwhile. And the fish is excellent.

A restaurant only offers raw fish as it is very emphasized on the poster. We took each a 38 € menu of sashimi including miso soup, salat and dessert(of choice from 2 cups of matcha ice or coffee). Honestly with this price i was not so satisfied as the quality was not up to my expectations and the fish was too thin. We ordered an additional portion of shrimps and squid but the shrimps were totally of chemical taste and smelled also so. We reported it to the restaurant and received new ones which were of normal taste.

This place was so amazing that we came back the day after! It's a little peace of Japan in the middle of Frankfurt. The chef, that has a great sense of humor, selects only the best possible fresh fish in order to offer a great customer experience. This is the most amazing Sashimi experience I have had in my entire life despite the fact that I have been doing sushi-tourism for quite some years (including Düsseldorf and Los Angeles) I felt very welcome, and the sashimi had an excellent quality and was presented in such a unique way. Matsuri is by far my favorite Sushi place and I highly recommend it. The chef was very kind and funny and made me feel very welcome. He explained in detail what was on my plate and how to eat it.
