MAN WAH China Restaurant in Hamburg

First off, the food is okay, but it used to be much better! What's really bad, though, is the service staff—unfriendly and incompetent, absolutely unacceptable! It's a shame, it used to be a good restaurant otherwise...

As always the food is great and the service is good.

The food was okay, but the service was terrible. The male server gave Chinese people a sour look and clearly discriminated against them. His attitude was extremely poor; he ignored me even after I called him several times. His manners were appalling. He's Asian himself and yet he discriminates against Chinese people. I won't go there a second time. Chinese people should choose carefully.

After our group of 13 arrived, the drinks arrived relatively quickly, but the biggest problem was the lack of flexibility! Ordering some noodles with the duck was a real hassle! We were told we had to choose something else or order the noodles separately! When we asked for a complimentary shot for 13 people, we were met with a bewildered shake of the head! The request was taken the wrong way! From then on, the atmosphere was tense.

Very average food in a somewhat sterile atmosphere. If you happen to be in the red-light district and need a quick meal, it's okay, but overall, the location dictates the business model, not the quality. It's an option, but you could also pass.

I try to eat here every now and then; it's always like a trip back to Hong Kong when I order dim sum. The wonton soup is also delicious. I think I was here for the first time in 2011, and have been here once or twice a year since then. Thank you for the consistency of Chinese cuisine, which I love so much. The specials on the blackboard are also pure delights. And the classic Jasmine tea rounds everything off. It's best as a couple or with friends so you can try more dishes. It's important to share the dishes, because that makes for a great time together. Of course, I'll be back.

Very good food and service. Large selection. The restaurant would have received a 5th star overall if the opening hours listed on the door were correct. If you expect to open at 1 a.m., you'll be disappointed, as they close shortly after 11 p.m.

If you enjoy delicious Chinese specialties, or just want to try something new, MAN WAH is a must! It's always delicious, a feast every time! I'd happily go back anytime!

Let's keep it short. Friendly and super fresh, the price was considered fair, and the taste was great too. We were full and glad we chose MAN WAH. There were four adults and our 8-year-old. Definitely recommended. There's less bling in the place than usual.

Hello everyone, I can only advise you from the bottom of my heart not to eat there, I once had duck and my wife had fried rice with chicken, the food smelled bad and afterwards we both had stomach problems, the service was also very unfriendly and they charged us almost 10 euros for 2 apple spritzers (small), that was the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever eaten at.

Unfortunately, only mediocre. We managed to get a clean table for two on a Sunday evening (after 9 p.m.). Drinks were brought quickly, then we ordered food. Both dim sum had different fillings, the main course was a plate meal and thick rib. We got a salad with squid... we thought it was on the house... I got my dim sum and my partner got nothing... hmm, that's strange, until we could react, my partner got the plate meal with duck and pork (the pork was inedible, so we left it on the plate), and I got nothing... nothing for a long time, until my partner asked where my food was. An answer; it took a while, but it came right away. The second-ordered drink was also forgotten; we must have been on a streak... My thick rib came, but it wasn't my taste (I took it with me). Conclusion: maybe we were just unlucky on a Sunday evening, but we won't be going there again.

Lovely Chinese food. The duck was so tender inside, crunchy skin and taste was absolute flavourful. The staffs were Chinese people, they are helpful and so friendly. This is a good place for anyone who love the taste of Asian food

In my opinion, this is the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever known! The food was terrible; even the rice wasn't good. The peanut sauce had no flavor and was watery! The service was uncaring, and the atmosphere, with the better outdoor tables, wasn't great either! In my opinion, this place can only survive thanks to tourists!

Excellently located for public transport, "Man Wah" is in a good location with decent, solid service. The ambiance is certainly functional and dated, but okay. The staff was very attentive, and the food arrived promptly. We specifically chose lunch because of the time of day. For three people, the food arrived at the same time, and the price/performance ratio was absolutely fine. We had roast duck (similar to crispy duck), beef, and a tofu dish with pork. The small spring rolls that accompanied it were really hot. The soup that came with lunch (in our case, chicken soup) was okay, but not amazing. There's still room for improvement. I would have liked to try the hot and sour soup, but it wasn't on the menu that day. Whether the soups vary is unclear. The food itself was very good in terms of portion size and really tasty. However, one complaint about all three dishes: there was little to no sauce, which is a real shame, because the rice also thrives on the sauce that you'd normally find in Asian dishes. So, that could definitely be improved. The otherwise perceived prices on the menu are above average, so I would expect truly generous portions and a decent amount of sauce. However, the lunch menu was certainly sufficient for the three of us. So, if I happen to be on the Reeperbahn again, it could be a good fit, and I'd happily go back. But other "mothers have beautiful daughters" are also offering lunch menus, meaning they're offered in many restaurants, including Asian restaurants, and depending on the part of town you're in, you can definitely indulge. But that's probably not why you're there specifically. The experience was average, but it was tasty, and therefore a generous 4 stars (hoping for more sauce on your next visit).

Very tasty Chinese restaurant on the Reeperbahn

It can't be called Chinese food at all. The dishes tasted very bad. They were simply fried with soy sauce and oyster sauce, and thickened with starch. Moreover, many of the side dishes were canned, not fresh. Even the onions tasted sour and smelly. It was obviously spoiled. It was extremely unpalatable.

The restaurant has a very cold decor; there are nicer ones in Hamburg. The food is excellent! The fried rice alone is huge and truly delicious. Sure, you pay a bit more here because it's in the neighborhood, but it's okay.

Used to be great – now absolutely disappointing! I used to be a regular at this restaurant and ate there regularly – the food was excellent, fresh, tasty, and the place was open late into the night. Unfortunately, that has changed completely. On my last visit, I was shocked: the food was tasteless, bland, and of disappointing quality. Nothing remains of the former quality. It seems as if the owners or the kitchen team have changed – and unfortunately not for the better. In addition, the prices are now extremely inflated – simply not justified for this quality. The value for money is abysmal. It's a real shame about what was once a truly great restaurant. As it is now, I absolutely cannot recommend it.

I'm a frequent customer at this restaurant, and I'd say the tipping culture has really gone crazy at this restaurant. The server asked for more tipping because I rounded up the amount, and he said it was too little, so he said, "Can you give more?" Another person also told me that tipping is a must.

We went to MAN Wah on a recommendation! We were very excited and were unfortunately very disappointed. The food was unfortunately boring and bland. Absolutely not worth recommending. Lots of onions and not much meat, or a lot of breading for not much meat.

Never again! Loud, cramped, and disastrous food The two of us went there yesterday, and it was a real disappointment. The atmosphere was extremely loud. Every inch of the restaurant was used, and the tables were so close together. Very unpleasant! The food was disappointing. The char siu (red meat), in particular, was far too sweet, completely dry, and seemed as if it had been prepared days ago. You could also clearly taste old oil. The cutlery consisted only of a fork and spoon. When we asked for a knife, we were given a butter knife!! The worst part: after the meal, my boyfriend felt really bad: severe nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting🤮😵‍💫 We would definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone!!!!

This was a complete disaster. Not to mention the carelessly and tastelessly prepared food, the service was also incredibly poor. The table was cleared and wiped with a napkin while others in our group were still eating. Sometimes it's a shame that we're well-mannered. Some guests would have reacted differently. A wonderful place for fans of Chinese cuisine. I've been a customer there since the 80s and enjoy the extensive offering. One of the really good Chinese restaurants in Hamburg. Lots of Asians are customers there. This is always a good sign. You can also meet many artists from the surrounding theaters and varieties here. Very good lunch and friends who like dim sums are also in good hands here. Just try it out and feel good.

My parents took me to Man Wah back in the 70s and I've loved Chinese cuisine ever since and still enjoy coming back to this day. For a Chinese friend, this is the most authentic cuisine in Hamburg.

An institution on the Reeperbahn. For as long as I can remember, I have only been there for my parents every time I visit Hamburg. Now Man Wah has been around for over 40 years and the quality of the food has not changed. Typically and authentically Chinese. Definitely again on the next visit.

Unfortunately, the Dim Sums were not good: Egg Custard Bun 奶黃包 had no fluid custard and no egg yolk aroma, the Winter Radish Cake 蘿蔔糕 was deep fried (what?), the Rice Rolls 拉腸 were quite thick and the Cha Siu Pork 叉燒 had no barbecue flavor. The Prawn Dumplings 蝦餃 and the Steamed Spareribs 豆豉排骨 were home made instead of some preproduction Asian Market frozen food, however, not sure they beat the best frozen versions. The Sticky Rice Chicken 糯米雞 and the Stir Fried Chinese Broccoli 炒芥蘭 were tasty, the vegetable was quite oily though. Overall, Dim Sums are probably not their strength.

In our opinion a tourist trap. The menus were dirty and not exactly well maintained, but for the first time we didn't let that fool us, because the food could still be good. The prices were decent for the amount of food served. €16.90 for fried noodles with chicken... you had to look for this in the noodles, because unfortunately there wasn't much. There was actually no service and the toilets also looked very worn out. When you only gave a small tip, the waiter gave you a huffy ah and you weren't said goodbye.

Update: bumped up to five stars for consistency. Cantonese, good service, take the dim sum, seafood and especially crispy pork belly.

Although I think they have the tastiest duck there, I have to deduct 1 star. Unfortunately there is no hot plate or something similar, so the food gets cold pretty quickly. The service is very nice there. The restaurant was packed at 5 p.m. and they didn't let it bother them. Food was brought quickly. The ambience is okay, could use some sprucing up. I recommend making a reservation by phone.

Ich weiß nicht, wo die vielen Sterne herkommen. Die Kellner rennen wie Roboter, und wir haben noch nie so ungewürzt chinesisch gegessen. Am Hähnchen war mehr Panade als Fleisch, die Gerichte waren klein und von Gemütlichkeit keine Spur. Auch ist es für mich als Vegetarierin sehr exotisch und unklar, Tofu in Verbindung mit Schweinebauch und Garnelen anzubieten. Es war der erste und einzige Besuch dort.

Best dim sum in Hamburg, we've been there multiple times! Authentic and great-tasting, lots to choose from. Central location (on the Reeperbahn) and reasonable prices, with reasonably quick service! Reservation recommended if it's a weekend since they don't have a ton of seating. Worth a visit!

Food is a 10 out of 10. Everything in the restaurant is very cramped and quite loud when it's full. But staff are always friendly.

I have known Laden for a very long time and highly recommend it. In the evening it is better to reserve in advance for free.

We spontaneously got a table on Christmas Eve and had dinner there. The food was very good & the staff was super nice.

Früher haben wir im MAN WAH die Spezialitäten des Hauses genossen. Damals war alles frisch zubereitet. Die Qualität hat deutlich nachgelassen . Die Tiefkühltruhe scheint der neue Lieferant der Küche zu sein. Bei Meeresfrüchten wird dieses kritisch. Wir können das MAN WAH nicht mehr empfehlen.

I recently visited the "MAN WAH China Restaurant" in Hamburg and overall I was very satisfied. The ambience is pleasant and welcoming, with beautiful decoration that creates an authentic atmosphere. The staff was friendly and attentive, even if the service was a little slower at times - probably due to the high occupancy. The food really impressed us. The dishes were fresh, tasty and well seasoned. We were particularly impressed by the crispy duck dish and the fried noodles. The portion sizes are generous, so you'll definitely be full. A small negative point, however, was that the menu seemed a bit confusing and the waiting time for the drinks could have been a little shorter. Overall, a highly recommended restaurant if you want to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine. We'd love to come back!

We ate Peking soup, mini spring rolls and dumplings there. The mini spring rolls were OK, and the dumplings were also just OK. Unfortunately, the Peking soup wasn't good at all. The extreme smell was so unpleasant that neither of us could eat them. We returned the soups, but they were still charged in full. Our request for goodwill was not responded to because it was claimed that the soup was of “normal quality”. We found this to be very disappointing and not customer-friendly. We would have expected more service orientation, especially in a location directly on the Reeperbahn. For this reason we unfortunately cannot recommend the restaurant.

Disappointing experience – absolutely not recommended!!! We ordered a soup that had an extremely unpleasant smell that reminded us of something spoiled. After asking several times and trying to return the soup (both of us couldn't eat it), we were simply told that the soup 'had to be like that'. If that's the case, I wonder how something like this can be served. The beer was also carelessly served in a bottle without a glass, which left the impression of a lack of service. Unfortunately, our visit spoiled any enjoyment of this meal and almost ruined the mood for our entire Hamburg vacation. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Nice little restaurant with typical dishes

This is probably one of the worst Chinese restaurants in all of Hamburg!! Never again.. Chicken broth as a starter...oh how Chinese...then the food was served on Grandma's lunch plates...which means served, after the soup had been carelessly transported to the table by the waiter and simply left on the corner, the main course plate arrived. ..what should we say sweet/sour chicken...was just sour and where are the vegetables????Zero! Beef Chinese...was ok with 3 pieces of root and 2 pieces of leek, otherwise no vegetables...unbelievable. Nice German/Chinese cucumber slices...laugh Alster water was so thin and tasted strange, as if it had been filled with water. But one more coronation at the end... when paying €29.60, the moody waiter cheekily asked for a tip!! We've never had anything so impossible! Definitely not, the whole visit there wasn't worth a cent!

Wir waren 4 Paare, 3 kannten das Man Wah, dem 4. hatten wir es empfohlen. Enttäuscht waren wir alle! Der Service und vor allem das Essen haben gegenüber der jüngeren Vergangenheit stark an Qualität verloren. Im Service war die Wartezeit auf das dann überwiegend lauwarm bis kalt servierte Essen mit 50 Minuten nach Bestellung ärgerlich lang. Auch die erste große Portion Reis kam nahezu kalt auf den Tisch. Lediglich die frittierten WanTans waren frisch aus der Fritteuse und heiß. Das Essen war durch die Bank nicht gewürzt, das Gemüse lag in übergroßen Stücken und kaum angegart auf den Tellern, mit Stäbchen nicht zu bewältigen. Bei vier Essen, die eine Sauce zum Bestandteil hatten, war diese völlig identisch darüber gegossen, ebenfalls nicht abgeschmeckt, nicht gewürzt. Die Kalamari in einem der Essen lagen in nahezu kinderfaustgroßen Stücken auf dem Teller, man brauchte ein Messer -!-, um sie essen zu können. Das Man Wah war seit Jahren unsere Wahl, vor allem, wenn es hinterher ins Theater ging. Das ist ab sofort vorbei! Merke: die Konkurrenz schläft nicht! Sind alle, die hierzu vier oder fünf Sterne gaben, sicher, dass sie wirklich im Man Wah waren?
