Maharaja in Hamburg

Wir kommen schon seit Jahren und heute war das letzte mal. Wie schade, aber bewusst über den Tisch mag man dann doch nicht gezogen werden. Wie hier schon in mehreren Bewertungen erwähnt, bekam ich statt eines ausdrücklich kleinen Getränks ein großes. Ich dachte das wäre ein Versehen also was soll's. Aber nun habe ich in den Bewertungen mehrfach wiedergefunden, dass statt kleiner Getränke einfach die große Variante für den doppelten Preis gebracht wurde. Auch die Nummer mit dem "möchten Sie etwas Brot dazu" - welches dann insgesamt mit 7 Euro auf der Rechnung landete, und dem "Chutney-Teller" für sechs Euro, der aus den typischen 5 kleinen Sößchen bestand, die man sonst kostenlos bekommt, haben wir genauso erlebt wie hier bereits von anderen Gästen beschrieben. Bei den Soßen wurde nicht mal gefragt, ob wir sie denn möchten. Unter aller Kanone ! Wir kommen aus Hamburg, kennen den Kiez gut und von so dreisten Maschen haben wir in den 80ern zuletzt gehört. Erlebt hatte ich sowas selbst noch nie. Schlagermove als Revival mag ja ganz witzig sein. Ein Revival des alten Kiez-Nepps ist es nicht. Das Konzept sollten die Inhaber vielleicht nochmal überdenken, denn das Essen an sich ist eigentlich sehr lecker. Aber wenn man für dumm verkauft wird, wirkt auch die Freundlichkeit der Bedienung nicht mehr als aufgesetzt. Ich bin echt entsetzt und stinksauer. Macht es gut - bzw. besser. So eine Masche solltet ihr eigentlich nicht nötig haben.

Great place with good costomer service. i ordered a take away and a beer while i waited, the staff was attentive and great. when my food arrived i paid and went to my hotel. the food was so good i made an account in trip advisor to recomend this place to anyone. also the vide inside was cozy and clean Food ordered: Garlic chicken and naan.

Da unser angesteuertes Restaurant nicht geöffnet hatte, mussten zu einer Alternativen greifen. So entschieden wir uns für das Maharaja. Wir alle waren positiv überrascht, denn das Essen schmeckte sehr gut und auch authentisch. Daumen hoch!!

We were served in a friendly manner, we didn't miss anything! We got very good, authentic Indian food and then a delicious mango shot and the typical anise to chew for freshness in our mouths. Due to the location, the ambience when you sit outside isn't quite idyllic, but it was perfectly fine for us as the rest was fine. We would go there again and can recommend the restaurant with a clear conscience :)!

Super tasty, authentic food, super nice, kind and courteous service, you immediately feel comfortable and well served. All with a great price-performance ratio! We thought the little recommendations in the menu were great! The Mango Lassi is highly recommended. The sanitary rooms are getting old, but they were extremely clean on a Saturday that was also the port's birthday.

By far the best Indian place we have been to so far. Even an hour before closing time, guests were invited in and served in a very friendly manner. Food absolutely top.

We were at the restaurant today at 2:50 p.m. to enjoy lunch until 3 p.m.!!! o'clock to come. The kitchen only accepts lunch orders until 2:45 p.m. We've always stayed at Maharani before and it was never a problem if we got there just before 3pm. An absolute disgrace. We will not visit this restaurant again.

Update May 4th, 2024 once again an absolute taste experience. Simply class Very very tasty, very friendly staff. FYI Hot is also hot☺️ A taste Pure ck experience. Thank you for the delicious food.

Schade - es hätte ein wirklich schöner Abend werden können. Ich war mit meinen Töchtern dort sehr nett empfangen worden, wir erhielten die volle Aufmerksamkeit der Bedienungen, so wie man es sich durchaus wünscht. Ja, es war nett, nicht zu aufdringlich, alles deutete auf einen schönen Abend hin. Was nach dem Essen blieb war das Gefdühl, über den Tisch gezogen worden zu sein. Doch urteilen Sie selber. Bestellt war ausdrücklich eine kleine Kirschschorle (0,2 l), da ich mich nach dem ersten Durst auf ein kühles Blondes gefreut habe. Es kam eine große Kirschschorle zum doppelten Preis. Schade, denn natürlich hätte ich mich beschweren können, habe es jedoch nicht getan, da das Lokal voll war und die Bedienenden alle Hände voll zu tun hatten. Bestellt wurden zwei Vorspeisen (1 x Brot mit Knoblauch zu 3,50 und Mixed Pakoras zu 7,50) . Der Ober empfahl zwei andere Vorspeisen, die wir wiederum ausdrücklich nicht bestellen wollten. Gewundert haben wir uns über sehr viel Brot (wir hatten 1 Portion bestellt), über den Chutney Teller (6 kleine Portionen mit Soßen) und die in der Rechnung beschriebene Vorspeise zu 12 Euro. Als dann die Rechnung kam (ein paar Zahlen handschriftlich addiert zu 90,60 €), forderte ich eine steuerlich anerkannte Rechnung. Jetzt kam eine Rechnung über 95,60 € (Begründung: der Chef hätte sich verrechnet). Bestellt hatten wir Gerichte und Getränke im Wert von 71,90 €, bezahlt habe ich eine Rechnung über 95,90 €. Die Qualität der Speisen war nicht enttäuschend, doch mehr als ein "ok" würde ich auch nicht vergeben (das Fleisch war recht trocken, Reis und Soße ok), wenn alles andere gestimmt hätte. Meine Empfehlung: Augen auf bei den gebrachten Speisen oder ein anderes Lokal entdecken. Eines noch: ich habe in meinem Leben zwei Rezensionen geschrieben. Das erste Mal war ich begeistert und das zweite Mal jetzt. Einfach nur schade, denn Essen gehen ist sehr teuer geworden. Und ich finde, das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis sollte wenigstens ok sein.

Das Ambiente dieses Restaurants ist sehr schlicht. Nichts für Schöngeister. Der Servise war freundlich, aber langsam. Die Speisen sind sehr schlicht. Das Küchenniveau ist mittelmäßig. Die Chicken Tika Masala waren ein wenig trocken und verkocht. Das Lamm-Curry war zu fettig und zu salzig. Die Portionsmenge war ausreichend. Dies hier ist nichts für Feinschmecker. Immerhin war das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis halbwegs o.k.

Visiting on a uni trip my friends and I landed here. The service was very friendly and fast, we did not speak German, but that was no problem for the server. Food was typical Indian with the choice of spice levels. Near the end of our evening some of our teachers also arrived at the restaurant. We wanted to surprise them with an extra spicy appetizer, we asked if we could do this and the server happily played allone and even made sure they got something extra spicy for a reduced price! Overall it was a pleasant experience, good and a lot of food, friendly staff, cozy spot. Would come again.

It is authentic! I have had the pleasure to visit this nice restaurant near St Pauli U Bahn station and I must say I am impressed.

The food was very tasty. The ambience is quite pleasant. The waiter wanted to "spin" me on a delicious appetizer that I didn't want. But I had the actually free “Papadam” for 8 euros on the bill. And two tea cups of the delicious “healing milk” cost 11 euros. Seemed quite expensive to me. There was no invoice either, just a handwritten receipt that was difficult to read. Even though it was delicious, I felt ripped off.

The Maharaja in Hamburg is an absolute delight! My experience there has been first class every time. The atmosphere is inviting and the service is always friendly and attentive. Particularly noteworthy is the excellent customer service. I can recommend Maharaja to anyone looking for excellent Indian cuisine in Hamburg.

Authentic Indian, but only half as good as the Maharani on Hallerstrasse, even though the two restaurants belong together. The food came quickly (about 5 minutes), but was only lukewarm, came seasoned and the papadum was sticky. The service was very friendly but intrusive. If Indian, then better in the larger Maharani

Small, quaint restaurant, a bit cramped but cozy. Lots of interesting dishes on the menu. The employees are really friendly and are available to help and advise. So my Himalaya Kofte was also very tasty. There are no photos, we preferred to eat.

Wirklich gutes indisches Essen! Der schärfegrad wird bei jedem Hauptgang abgefragt, man kann zwischen mild, leicht scharf, scharf und ultra scharf wählen. Wir hatten leicht scharf, hätten aber wahrscheinlich auch gut noch scharf essen können. Nicht zu große Portionen.

Eine kulinarische Reise nach Indien Wir hatten Garlic Naan, Butter Chicken und Chicken Jalfrezi. Wir essen regelmäßig indisch, weshalb unsere Ansprüche sehr hoch sind. Wir haben selten so gut indisch gegessen. Die Currys wurden mit sehr viel Liebe zum Detail und sehr kunstvoll mit geschnitztem Gemüse dekoriert.

Food is delicious. Charging 15 euros for 4 pieces of bread with different sauces is a rip-off. We were last there in mid-January and have now paid 15 euros more for the same food and drink. I think that says it all.

Portions a bit too small. Cheating on bread: we wanted 5 pieces of chutney and 2 portions of different breads. It was suggested to us that they could also make us a small bread mix. Great, there are so many delicious varieties! We'll gladly take it. In the end we just got 2 different breads, but a total of 4 portions. Why not 4 different varieties if you don't want to pay more? And the two varieties weren't even the ones we had originally chosen.

Great ambience, delicious food, but the bill is topped up properly! Garlic naan, papadam and chutney plates come to the table without being asked - so it's best to cancel your order in advance....

Actually a really nice shop, food good, service good. One thing annoyed us: Indian restaurants usually always serve papadam (thin, crusty bread) with a little mint sauce on the side. After ordering, the waiter asked us if we would like bread and sauce. He brought 2xPapadam and 2xNaan (flatbread) with six mini-small sauces, which weren't good either. The bread was listed at €7 and the sauces at €6. We feel like we've been duped here. The drinks are quite expensive, the food is reasonably priced. Unfortunately only two stars due to the rip-off :-(

We visited the Maharaja restaurant in spring 2024. The restaurant is atmospherically decorated, but seems very busy. There is little space for neighbors at the table. Reservations seem to only be approximate, so you have to expect a waiting time even with a reservation. Therefore, it seems to be part of the concept to generate as much throughput as possible - the main course only came shortly after the starter. The food is very tasty and varied, the staff is very friendly. Overall worth a visit!

We were there as a family. You should definitely reserve in advance. The restaurant is a bit narrow. There is a large selection of food. There is also something for children. The staff is also very friendly towards children. Now the most important thing: The food is a dream, I've rarely eaten something so delicious!

Food was okay to good, but value for money was rather poor. It's also very annoying that starters are forced on you and then charged for. So we paid €12 for some bread and a few not-so-good sauces that you usually get for free in restaurants as a greeting from the kitchen. All we were asked was “can we have some bread with sauce first”.

There are two restaurants, one crowded and noisy, the other empty and quiet. Not sure why, but the waiters asked to find a seat in the crowded cramped place. The food was mediocre at best. They used the same base curry for the chicken and lamb. Nothing set them apart.

So the food was okay, but it was difficult when it came to paying. We were not allowed to pay separately. 26€ that came out of nowhere was also very uncool. Just don't let this plate of bread and sauce be talked into you. The waiters act as if they would just add it and in the end you simply pay €26 for the rubbish. Very very cheeky. It should be said that it costs so much. For 5€ it's ok but 26€ doesn't work at all.

KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE BREAD PLATE, €36, we fell for it too! Impudence rip off! There were seven of us and we were recommended a nice selection of starters, nice with bread, which we were happy to order. In the end we paid €72 for Indian flatbread. The shop is very narrow and noisy, the tables are not clean. The main courses were very tasty but the portions were quite small. Never again for me!

Awful experience due to the waiter who tried to force a tip. We had a dinner there on Saturday evening February 24th. After asking for a bill, we waited for ~20 minutes and it didn’t come. We decided to pay at the counter and did not give a tip due to this waiting time, difficulty to pay with card and mixing up our bill. After no tip, the waiter got pissed and asked us where we are from and if there is no culture of tipping because this is the only way he gets paid in this restaurant(?). He was extremely rude, racist and aggressive. Although the food was ok, I am certainly not coming back as I am simply afraid to meet him again. 😅

Very authentic food, super tasty and value for money is top. You felt very full, which was probably due to the half liter of Mago Lassi. So far I haven't drunk anything better. The service was very courteous and quick despite the restaurant being full. We were in the next room, the furnishings in the hall were good, but the access, the path and the toilets seemed a bit improvised. Still definitely worth recommending!

Vegan food, much tastier than the run-of-the-mill Indian food. Served quickly, small portion but completely filling. Plush ambience, only the suddenly changed calm music to Indian rap didn't quite fit ;-) Gladly Every now and then when you get a parking space.

We had high hopes reading the reviews. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is really nice. The place was packed and it's cosy. That put the hopes even higher. But if you want spicy food you are not in the right place. They have 4 kinds of spicy. (Even though the menue sais they have 6 kinds.) Mild to indian spicy. But indian spicy was really only a soft mild taste of spicy. Maybe you can't do too mich in Germany. But if I order "indian spicy" I want it right. Also a bit unfortunate was that they don't offer milk alernatives for their specialty teas like chai. I guess you can't expect that from a traditional redtaurant. But that's ok.

Smooth Indian that I've had much better elsewhere. The starter was a shared plate of indefinable things in batter and deep-fried. Just think I should have ordered the chicken pakoras. Rogan Josh with lamb was also a dull affair with dry lamb. The waiters were really busy and the food was almost thrown on the table.

If you want to fill up while eating, you should definitely not eat here. The portions were very small. Even though we were recommended a plate of bread, we didn't feel full. At this point I definitely recommend not taking the bread plate. This is not on the menu and is a mix of different types of bread and ensured that the bills were 36 euros more expensive.

It wasn't clear from the start that only one time slot was obviously booked. After an hour and a half we were stressed about paying and after two hours we were quite forcefully shown the door by simply putting the bill on the table.

After a short wait the table was available. Unfortunately the shop has very, very tight seating, I was sitting in the aisle in front of the toilet, and every 30s I was jostled from behind. Even after ten minutes there were still used napkins on the table. The air was really bad because of all the people - something urgently needed to be done here. We then left again, absolutely no recommendation. So I can't say anything about the food.

It was really pleasant to sit here. Portions could have been larger. One point deducted for the “forced” starter, which was then added to the bill for €15.

Have now eaten at the new, large Maharaja 3 times. Food is okay. But cleanliness and service a disaster. Glue chairs and tables. The floor is not cleaned from the previous day. The service is really bad. Orders are constantly forgotten or incorrectly delivered. Nobody wears an apron or uniform clothing. You don't recognize the employees. Update 2024: The service has improved but is still a bit chaotic. Food was ordered Indian spicy. Arrived neutrally mild. The cash register was down so only cash payments were possible. The three of us paid 90 euros with 1 main course, a drink, and 1 bread, one dip. A bit overpriced. There were only 4 pieces of meat in my lamb dish!! Cheeky for 17 euros. Quality of the food was okay and tasty. Recommended

Small but nice. I'm from Hanover, where I've already tried a few "Indians". Hats off. This restaurant is simply fabulous. We ate here on New Year's Eve and absolutely loved it. The food tasted very good, the service was hard to beat and the prices were also moderate. The many good reviews are absolutely justified. We will try to reserve a table here again on our next visit. We had a wonderful evening at the Maharaja! The atmosphere has a living room feel, very cozy. The service is quick and very attentive. The food is of top quality and the portions are well balanced. We can highly recommend the Maharaja!

Unfortunately our visit was disappointing, the chicken masala was very bland and strangely enough there were a lot of tofu pieces between the chicken pieces...

Das Maharaja kann vielleicht ein sehr tolles Lokal sein- aber wir konnten es nicht herausfinden: trotz frühzeitiger und schriftlich bestätigter Reservierung haben wir keinen Platz bekommen. Statt dessen hat man uns aufgefordert draußen in der Kälte zu warten.

Good service, nice location. Main dish size is okay but appetizers could be larger for that price. Mango yoghurt drink was really good and lamb bryani was one of the best..

Wir waren am Samstagabend dort. Wir hatten extra einen Tisch reserviert- mussten aber 15 min draußen warten. Das war in der Kälte unangenehm. Dann durften wir irgendwann zum Tisch, der Gott sei dank am Rand des Lokals war. Es ist laut, eng an den Nachbarn und so schnell wie die Servicekräfte auch sind, wirken diese auch gestresst. Also das Essen war lecker und auch schnell da aber entspannt war der Aufenthalt für mich nicht.

Das Essen war gut, typisch indisch eben, die Bedienung auch okay, der Rest war Abzocke, jedes Getränk kam ungefragt in xxl 0.5 l Cola, kleine Getränke erschienen auf der Rechnung in groß, wir waren zu sechst da, wurden gefragt ob wir Brot vorweg wollen, und es mit 36€ bezahlt!! Es gab vorher keine Nachfrage wie oft, die Hälfte ging zurück und erst auf der Rechnung wurde die Bestellung klar. Auch bei der scheinheiligen Frage ob wir einen Mangolikör wollen, wurde suggeriert, ein Absacker aufs Haus, diesen Schnaps, der wie Doppelkorn schmeckt, wurde uns dann mit 4.20 pro Person in Rechnung gestellt. Rechnung dann einfach für alle zusammen, eine Aufteilung wurde verweigert und schnell die EC Karte durchgezogen damit bloß nicht diskutiert werden kann... Dazu der Gastraum voll gepropft und sehr laut mit improvisierten Zugang

Am Flak-Bunker mussten sie ja leider raus. Alles schon abgerissen. Jetzt, in der Nähe zum Kiez, kann man endlich wieder das leckerste Indisch essen, was es in Hamburg gibt. Es gibt "Kinder"-scharf, wenn man nicht gleich unter den schärferen Graden sich den Mund verbrennen möchte...

Ich hatte keine Ahnung wie gut Indisches Essen sein kann. Ich komme wieder auch wenn es 400 km weit weg ist. Mega

Very yummy authentic indian food!!!

Essen ist zwar gut - aber viel zu teuer!!! Ein Stück Naan für 4,50 !!! Kleine Portionen und sehr teuer, nie wieder

Wir sind 22:15 Uhr am Samstag gekommen (spontan) und wurden sehr herzlich und warm empfangen. Der Service war außerordentlich gut und das Essen war perfekt! Wir hatten Lamm Curry und Hähnchen Maharaja und konnten sogar die Schärfe Grade (1-mild bis 4- sehr scharf) angeben. Das Fleisch war butterweich und zerlief förmlich im Mund, es war ein reiner Gaumenschmaus. 16-18€ pro Portion ist absolut angemessen und für das Geld bekommt man auf jeden Fall tolle indische Speisen serviert. Alles in allem 10/10 Punkten, und diese Bewertung vergebe ich sonst nicht so leichtsinnig. Wirklich ein Traum, wir werden nicht das letzte mal hier gegessen haben.

Das Essen super lecker und traditionell indisch. Bestes indische Restaurant in der Stadt. Die Einrichtung wirkt erst etwas abschreckend und ungewohnt, aber eigentlich echt schön. Die Mitarbeiter sind sehr freundlich. Allerdings muss man genau auf die Rechnung schauen!! Da sie oft Dinge die man nicht bestellt hat auf die Rechnung dazu buchen!!! Also immer nach der Rechnung fragen!!!

Wir waren hier spontan essen. Die Mitarbeit waren alle super freundlich, humorvoll und aufmerksam. Die Auswahl ist riesig und die Preise fair. Man kann zwischen 5 verschiedenen Schärfe-Grade auswählen. Das Essen war sehr lecker und man kann das Restaurant gut weiterempfehlen:)

Meiner Meinung nach eines der besten indischen Restaurants in Hamburg. Das Essen ist sehr authentisch gewürzt und es gibt viele Gerichte, die es in anderen indischen Restaurants nicht gibt, z.B. mit speziellen indischen Gemüsesorten. Generell gibt es eine sehe große Auswahl an vegetarischen und veganen Speisen. Auch das System mit fünf unterschiedlichen Schärfegraden funktioniert sehr gut, hier kann man das Essen genau passend scharf bekommen. Die Atmosphäre ist gemütlich und der Service immer freundlich und zuvorkommend. Das Preisniveau ist gehoben, aber vollkommen angebracht für die Qualität und Menge der Speisen. Ich kann das Maharaja sehr empfehlen.

Wir haben spontan einen Tisch bekommen. Das Essen hat uns beiden sehr gut geschmeckt und die Portionen waren wirklich groß. Wir können das Restaurant empfehlen.

Wir sind spontan hier eingekehrt und haben gut gegessen. Der Service ist freundlich, zuvorkommend und auch sehr unterhaltsam. Das Ambiente und die Platzverhältnisse sind indisch gehalten und bei den Longdrinks gab es einen zusätzlichen kostenfreien Shot aufs Haus, falls man es für nötig erachtete. Zum Schluss gab es einen gratis Smoothie-Shot mit einer kleinen Schale Gewürzmischung, die die Verdauung anregen sollen.
