Great restaurant; I've visited a few Indian restaurants. Everything was perfect for me here. Very tasty food, competent waiters who recommended the dishes to me. Really good food, including the appetizer. The highlight was the spice bowl at the end (I can't remember the name). Caraway, other spices, and sweet sugar pieces were exactly my taste. My companion didn't like it – it was "cough medicine." It's a matter of taste. We went to the Maharaja in St. Pauli.

Hamburg has many restaurants, but one Indian restaurant truly impressed me. As soon as I entered, I was greeted by the warmth of the team, which continued throughout the evening. Every single person, from the waitresses to the kitchen, made an extraordinary effort to provide us with a perfect evening. You could feel the passion and commitment in every gesture. Special praise goes to the chef, who was present without being intrusive. He took time for a pleasant conversation and was very friendly and open. His relaxed and positive manner contributed significantly to the relaxed and warm atmosphere. But the highlight was the food. It was authentic, aromatic, and tasted like a culinary journey to India. You could tell the ingredients were fresh and the dishes were prepared with love. I have rarely eaten so well and spent such a wonderful, spontaneous evening in a restaurant. Because it was so good, we returned the very next day. A visit is absolutely recommended!

Best service I have ever received at a restaurant. The staff were super nice and the food delicious. They refilled our chutney and raita + gave us a couple of extra drinks and did not even charge us for it.

It was simply fantastic! While rather unassuming from the outside, the interior captivates with its traditional Indian flavor. The food is simply fresh and delicious, everything is explained clearly, and you can choose the spiciness level. An absolute must on any trip to Hamburg!

My girlfriend and I happened to pass by this restaurant yesterday. The staff was very nice, but we both got food poisoning after our visit yesterday. This is actually the first time I've ever experienced food poisoning, and also the last time I'll be at this restaurant.

Indian restaurant, rather cramped and compact inside, outside on the sidewalk. The food is good, the red wine was also good. Prices are upscale. Service was very good.

The food and service are incomparably good. Be careful when ordering the spice level. Those who aren't used to it might find medium too much to handle.

We ordered lamb biryani. Unfortunately, the dish had little to do with biryani. I think every Indian would have sent it back. Service was very friendly. The restaurant was very run-down.

One of the best restaurant experiences ever! We went there with a group of 10 people during a school trip. We received a friendly welcome right from the phone when we made our reservation, which was only surpassed by the warm welcome we received there. The ambiance, as well as the food, were perfectly seasoned and particularly authentic, and the service was equally warm and friendly. At the end, we were treated to a juice, including 2 liters of the same juice as a gift (which, of course, we couldn't refuse). As a gesture of hospitality, we also got the bread on the house, as well as the aperitif. Again, the taste and quality were fantastic. Every tip was worth it! Overall, a place for young and old that's worth a visit and an absolute insider tip :) A MUST-DO on any trip to Hamburg!

Best Indian in Hamburg...I've heard that's what they say. And rightly so. Super delicious food – Indian and Ayurvedic. It doesn't get any better than this, in my opinion. We're absolutely thrilled! We ordered a menu for two and only ate half. It wasn't a problem at all. They immediately suggested packing up the leftovers and asked us if we needed cutlery. The value for money is 200% spot on, and all expectations were exceeded. We'd love to go back! We go to restaurants a hell of a lot and have NEVER experienced such friendly staff.

We are visiting Hamburg from Denmark and decided to go to Maharaja because they had vegan food. We were so happy with the service, the food and the family friendly vibe. The food was absolutely fantastic and akin to the food we have tasted in India! The servers were very kind and helpful and so sweet towards our two year old. We really recommend this place!

We came here for dinner in the evening. There are small beer tables outside for seating. The menu came quickly, and we were able to order quickly, too. I specifically ordered my butter chicken super mild, as I can't stand spicy food. When ordering, we were asked if we wanted bread with it. They were talking about some naan bread. We agreed! The food came quickly. First, we were given the bread and a plate with five different sauces. The chef himself explained to us what they were made of. We were surprised by the amount of different bread, but it tasted delicious. The main course also came quickly. However, my butter chicken was so spicy that I couldn't eat it. After complaining, it was made milder, and the chef personally and rudely brought it back. After the meal, we got a shot and then the bill! The bread and sauces were charged separately, and we paid a total of 15 euros for them! This isn't about the money, but rather about the unfair way of selling an appetizer to the customer!! It would have been fair to tell them how much it cost before it was brought, and not to talk about SOME BREAD!! That's why I can't recommend this restaurant, even though the food was good.

One if the worse restaurants I have ever had the misfortune to eat in. The food was horrible and tasteless and to be honest I've had better microwave meals from the supermarket, also charged us 50 euros for food that we really didn't order which we were on the understanding was complimentary nibbles. The popadoms were awful and tasted like burnt ceiling tiles. Avoid at all cost. Only left one star as there is no option to leave zero.

Avoid at all costs. Without doubt the worst food I've ever had anywhere, let alone Hamburg. Poppadoms were the worst Ive ever had. Like plastic discs. Stale and oily. Then coerced into having two mixed starters which we didn't want which were plain awful. Then the main course. Every single one of us in a group of 9 could not eat it. Chicken had a very strange texture and looked very dark under the sauce. Reminiscent of pigeon. When we complained, waiter argued and said they were best restaurant in Hamburg. We disagreed and asked for the bill. Then 3 waiters removed the food and whole doing so asked if we wanted to take it away with us. Not a chance. When he brought the bill out, there was no consideration for our disappointment and the waiter even had the audacity to ask us to tip him. We did. The tip was to close their doors and not serve anyone ever again. Disgusting. You have been warned.

One star because there’s no option for zero. Worst food I’ve ever eaten in my life. Ordered a chicken tikka masala and it definitely was not chicken… use your imagination.

A delicious feast for anyone who loves intense, spicy food. We had one of the set menus for two. It included a light starter, a hearty main course selection, and a sweet little dessert. For the main course, we had lamb, chicken, and something vegetarian. The meat was super tender, with lovely sauces and accompanying rice. The breads served with it had their own character, which complemented the flavors of the food. To top it all off, the waitress was super friendly. He was very accommodating and asked often enough if we were okay. I forgot his name. However, he was relatively tall, with long hair tied back in a ponytail and cool tattoos. I'd love to come back or try your other restaurants in Hamburg. It was a well-rounded experience. Thank you. 🫶🏼🔥

May 2025, I've been here again, and I always enjoy coming back, even with visitors from other cities. Everyone is thrilled! Very good, authentic food, including some very unusual dishes from India! An Indian restaurant with an interesting atmosphere and delicious, fresh Ayurvedic food. Highly recommended lunch. Children are also welcome and have something to look forward to! They have a very special spiced coffee, which you should order after your meal; it's very delicious. Ayurvedic healing cuisine, simply fantastic for anyone who's interested and enjoys it. My children also love eating there. I hope they get larger premises with parking soon so they can host Bollywood nights again. I would love to. It used to be the Pferdemarkthalle. Unfortunately, they had to move, but the food is and remains top-notch (the best in Hamburg?!) I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to try Indian cuisine. Namaste

Amazing food. Rajeev was excellent and looked after us extremely well. We had 2 paneer main dishes, neither of which we'd seen before. This was refreshing as vegetarians. Highly recommended.

Visitamos este encantador lugar a la vuelta de la esquina del Reeperbahn. Éramos solo los dos, y habíamos reservado una mesa para dos. Aunque llegamos a tiempo, tuvimos que esperar unos 10 minutos antes de sentarnos. A pesar de la corta espera, el personal era muy amable y acogedor. Empezamos con poppadoms y una buena variedad de chapuzones, seguidos de dos platos principales. La comida era sabrosa y no tardó demasiado en llegar. En general, una experiencia agradable con buena comida y un servicio cálido.

Yesterday, my husband and I went here for dinner. We walked past and it smelled so incredibly good that after our walk, we decided: let’s grab something to eat here. You can sit nicely outside by the street — which is exactly what we did. The menu offered an enormous variety of dishes. I chose the chicken tikka masala, and my husband went for the chicken curry madras. Our food arrived within five minutes! (Felt like five minutes). My dish was served in a cast-iron pan. And most importantly: it tasted absolutely amazing. I also tried a bite of my husband’s dish, and it was just as delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful. One of our servers, who had tattoos and a bun, was extremely kind and happily suggested dishes we should try next time (I asked for his advice). When we went to pay, another server brought us two small orange shots. When I mentioned that I was pregnant, he thoughtfully brought me a glass of mango juice instead. My husband really enjoyed the shots and I loved the mango juice. It was such a sweet gesture. In short: fast and friendly service, truly amazing food. A solid 11/10!

My partner and I were visiting Hamburg and really wanted to have Indian food. There are many Indian restaurants in Hamburg, but we liked the Maharaja because of the founder and her story, also because an Indian chef is supposed to work there and it is more traditional. We both already know restaurants in Berlin and Bavaria, so we have some experience when it comes to Indian restaurants. Drinks ————- Green tea (0 out of 5 stars) The menu says, traditional and Ayurverdic, a green tea from Meßmer was served. No go Aperol Sprizz (5 out of 5 stars) At first we both tasted something that tasted like syrup. Tasted very sweet. However, after stirring it was very tasty Eat ——— Chicken Vindaloo (5 out of 5 stars) Very tasty food in a beautiful metallic bowl (looked nice and traditional), great taste of the spices and super tender meat Chicken Tikka Masala (5 out of 5 stars) The dish with the spices was a taste explosion. We thought it was great that the dish still sizzled on the pan. service ———- The waiters were friendly, even if one seemed a bit hectic. However, we didn't feel uncomfortable. We both thought it was nice that we were both asked about the level of spiciness of the dishes. Toilets probably haven't been renovated since the restaurant opened. Cleanliness was ok. Overall a nice experience, only 1 star less because it is important to us to preserve what is on the menu.

We spontaneously got a place on an Easter Saturday without any problems. Have been here several times and the food has always tasted great. Great value for money 👍🏻 Only a small star deduction for the ambience because of somewhat "sticky" menus - at least they shouldn't be on the plates 😉

From reception, where the door is opened and the table is assigned, to when you leave, where the door is also opened here, a perfect evening 👍. The service was exemplary, and the question about the spiciness (mild, medium, hot, or authentic) was asked when ordering. The appetizers were delicious. The food was even more impressive; for me, it's one of the best, if not the best, Indian restaurants in Hamburg. It was also nice that I received a compliment saying, "You made a good choice." 😉 We'll be back

Very authentic Indian-Ayurvedic cuisine! Requests are always addressed very specifically and the food is a dream! Whole menus can also be selected. Great selection and everything super delicious. Lots of choice for vegetarians/vegans. And also a lot of options for gluten intolerances. A lot is worked with chickpea flour. It's a bit cramped in the restaurant, but that somehow makes everything comfortable.

We came spontaneously without a reservation and got a table in the next room - unfortunately very narrow and a bit noisy. The service was initially friendly, but later became less pleasant. The food was super tasty, and what was particularly positive was that you could choose the level of spiciness! My husband has rarely had really spicy food, but here it worked - we were very happy with it. However, the pricing for bread and dips felt like a hidden cost trap: €17 for chutneys, garlic naan and papadum, with no prior information. This should be clearly communicated! Reordered drinks and naan took a long time and had to be ordered again. At the end there was at least a schnapps on the house. Conclusion: If you know the “bread and dip” scam, you can eat well here, but you should watch out for hidden costs.

A very lovingly and comfortably decorated restaurant with incredibly friendly staff. The lady and gentleman of the house made a very pleasant impression and even exuded a sense of 'you're welcome and happiness'. Such a cozy restaurant, run with attention to detail, with very good, delicious food. We would love to return on our next trip to Hamburg and look forward to being their guests.

I'm really sorry to write this review. This was my third time at Maharaja and I always loved the food, the ambience and the friendly service. Unfortunately, after yesterday I feel a bit ripped off. There used to be a mixed bread plate, which we looked for in vain on the menu yesterday. When the cellar asked if he could mix 2-3 loaves of bread for us and he came back with a well-filled bread basket, we were initially thrilled until we saw the bill. Each bread was priced individually, so we paid €14 for the naan alone. An additional €10 was added for sauces and another type of bread. So a mere €24 for bread with sauces, which was never communicated and to be honest I find it a bit cheeky. We would never have ordered that amount of bread because it was far too much. In addition, we were not asked about the size of the drink and were simply given large drinks, which was also reflected in the bill. Unfortunately, my food wasn't spicy at all, even though I ordered it differently. But it was still tasty. As always, the waiters were incredibly friendly, but unfortunately helped us get a hefty bill with a smile. I still think it's a good restaurant, but you have to be careful how you word your order. I find that really sad. It's also a shame that the bread plate is no longer available, but the old menu is still online.

We were with a group in the next room. That was very nice. The food was delicious and you also enjoyed the mango lassi. However, the noise level was very high. Conversations were only possible in the immediate vicinity. Overall, highly recommended.
