A very busy bistro with charm. A very good wine selection. Good wine recommendations from the owner. A small menu with fresh dishes. The dessert (chocolate tart with sorbet) was a true explosion of flavor. We'll see you again.

Absolutely recommended. Very nice wine list with excellent value for money. You can find a lot of books on site, and overall, you can feel a touch of French charm. And if you like philosophical things, don't be afraid to talk to Olaf (the owner), who studied philosophy. If your work allows, you can also have a good conversation with your wine. :)

As soon as you enter, you feel like you've been transported to a small Parisian bistro – cozy, charming, harmoniously decorated, and with a relaxed atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. The wine selection is excellent and is accompanied by competent, passionate advice – here you can see that wine knowledge and enjoyment go hand in hand. The food is consistently excellent, fresh, and prepared with love. Particularly delicious: the hangover breakfast on Saturdays, the perfect start to the day. Whether for a relaxing glass of wine, a hearty dinner, or a leisurely breakfast – Le Chat Noir is a piece of France in the heart of Essen that you absolutely must experience! And when the Essen guitar duo performs there, it becomes the perfect international evening – a piece of sophisticated, living culture, the likes of which can probably only be discovered in the melting pot of the Ruhr region – perhaps surprising to some, but not surprising to connoisseurs.

Stylish French-style shop. We were there for an evening red wine. It was fun. They're sticking with the concept. I definitely have to try the food again. Reservations recommended.

We go there two or three times a year. Today we were there again and noticed that the quality has improved. We've always enjoyed the food, and we've always been extremely satisfied. We love the wines, the atmosphere, and the owner. But compared to previous visits, the dishes today tasted even more well-rounded, taking things to a whole new level. Truly excellent.

Very nice place, crowded and accordingly loud, but the wine and food were delicious. The pasta was very spicy. It took a while, but that was no surprise given the number of people there. Highly recommended! The acoustics could use some work :-)

The black cat offers a great warm atmosphere with very good food and drinks! The service is very attentive and very friendly and gives you detailed advice. The dishes vary from week to week, which speaks for the freshness. Definitely worth a visit, but it's best to reserve in advance!

Simplicity, delicious food and wine, pleasant crowd.

A cheese plate for €25.50, okay. A white porcelain plate with 6 types of cheese. No decorations, lettuce leaves, tomatoes, peppers, etc. The bread in a paper bag, bread basket probably not available. And the candle on the table also remained dark. If you don't feel like having guests, you should simply close the shop.

Ich bin ohne Erwartung von meiner Freundin, als Abschluss eines schönen Tages, ins Le Chat Noir eingeladen worden. Es hat keine 5 Minuten gedauert und ich fühlte mich wie in einem Bistro in Paris. Nur der Rauch der Gaulloises fehlte. Und dann kam der vom Chef ausgewählte Rote. Hervorragend. Und dann kam ein Tartar vom lokalem Rind mit Bratkartoffelwürfel und gefüllten Champignons (18€). Meine Freundin hatte Lachsforelle drapiert in einem Radiccio-Kopf und mit noch mehr gemischten Salat (19€). Ein Dessert passte nicht mehr oben drauf. Ein Lob an den Koch, chapeau. Manche sehen vielleicht die ergrauten Studenten und die wackligen Stühle - ich sehe nur eine besondere Location, eine überraschende Küche, einen gastfreundlichen Chef und den Charme Frankreichs.

A cozy restaurant with a lot of charm. We had an incredibly lovely 'family evening' at Le chat noir. Very, very tasty food (including the vegetarian dishes) and exceptionally fine wines. Olaf, le patron, always takes time for his guests and a short exchange of words. The staff is very accommodating. Nothing is missing at all. We would love to come back <3.

Cozy restaurant with good wine and service The only minus, if it is a minus at all, is the noise in the restaurant, which requires attentive table neighbors when there is a good crowd.

Waiter/ress overwhelmed... waited too long for drinks and food (only vegetables).

I was visiting Essen for a day. And I deliberately chose this restaurant because I wanted something different to eat. I'm not disappointed either. But the very, very good rating somehow made me expect more. I had strips of beef tenderloin which were also good. I missed a little bit of pizzazz. The dessert, warm chocolate cake, was also good. But not particularly. Maybe I'm just being too critical. In summary: actually everything was tasty, but not surprising. Yes, perhaps that describes it best.

Absolutely great and never disappoints. Fantastic. Since I insisted on visiting 'this wine bar' the decade before last, we have always been amazed by this great, never-ordinary food with special flavors. I also think it's great that you can order everything from starters to dessert, as well as a little something if you're less hungry than your partner. We also really like breakfast. For some it may be important to know that people are seated very closely and it is quite noisy. Unfortunately, in summer, cigarette smoke often drifts into the restaurant from outside because smoking guests think they have to sit directly outside the open window.

For me the best location in Rüttenscheid. Quality and service consistently and consistently excellent.

A nice and cozy French bistro in Essen-Rüttenscheid. There is a large selection of very tasty wines. The menu is not that extensive, but there is enough choice to find something to suit your taste. Le chat noir is always full, so it's best to reserve a table in advance. The service staff is attentive and very friendly. The price level is just ok, everything has just become a little more expensive now. When the weather is nice you can sit outside in front of the restaurant. The visit is worthwhile and we would be happy to come back.

Könnte nett sein, wenn das Publikum nicht durch die Bank unerträglich wäre, das Essen besser und besaufen kann man sich woanders billiger. Man liest einiges von Esskneipe mit Studentenflair. Ach ja, in dem Fall dann wohl eher Langzeitstudenten oder doch wohl eher einer Ansammlung der maximal unsympathischen Lehrer aus ganz Essen. Man bekommt schon das Kotzen wenn man an den großen Fenstern vorbeigeht und hinein sieht. Richtig schlimm wird es, wenn man so wie wir, aufgrund einer Einladung da rein muss. Das Lokal ist an sich nett, aber am Ende entscheidet die Melange aus Essen und Publikum. Das ist im ersten Fall mittelmäßig und im letzten unterirdisch.

Too loud (82 dB), too densely packed (walking distances approx. 70 cm), drinks overpriced (0.3 l crémant €21), dishes overpriced (tartar blob with some salad €18), lives on the supposed splendor of days long gone. Conclusion: Avoid visiting, there are better shops even in Rüttenscheid.

Heerlijk relaxte omgeving. Veel goede wijnen per glas. Eenvoudig maar heel lekker eten tussen overwegend buurtgenoten. Aanrader!

Sehr gute Gerichte (kleine entsprechende Karte) in einem pittoresk eingerichteten Lokal mit mit "Studenten-Szene"-Charakter! De Speisen sind außergewöhnlich gut. Eine sehr gute und umfangreiche Weinkarte, gerade bei den Weißweinen, rundet das Angebot ab. Und - auch der Service ist sehr kunden-orientiert und freundlich! Da muß und kann man sich wohlfühlen!

Sehr angenehme Atmosphäre, eine große Auswahl an Weiß- und Rotweinen, viele köstliche, französische Hauptgerichte und kleine Naschereien zu einem fairen Preis. Der Service ist stets aufmerksam und freundlich. Einziger Nachteil ist, dass es ab einer gewissen Dichte an Gästen sehr laut wird. Eine Tischreservierung ist zu empfehlen! Wir kommen jedenfalls gerne wieder!

Der Wein schmeckt echt toll bezüglich dem Essen kann ich nicht sagen da ich nicht gegessen habe.

Das Le Chat noir ist der perfekte Ort für einen leckeren Wein und gutes Essen. Die Weinkarte ist groß und wirklich mit sehr guten weißen, roten und Rosé Weinen bestückt. Der Service ist aufmerksam, freundlich und sehr schnell. Die Speisekarte wechselt wöchentlich und ist eher schmal gehalten aber dafür wirklich außerordentlich gut. Für mich eines der besten Beispiele auch mal die lokalen und kleineren Restaurants zu unterstützen da man hier mit hoher Qualität rechnen kann. Wir kommen sehr gerne wieder!

Seit Jahren eine feste Institution in der Brigittastraße mit wöchentlich wechselnden Speisen neben einer Stammkarte. Die Speisekarte ist klein und fein, die Weinkarte dafür um so üppiger :-) - Sowohl das Essen als auch die Weine sind wirklich gut. Ich mag das schlicht gehaltene Ambiente und die Möglichkeit, dort unkompliziert auch nur auf ein Glas Wein einzukehren. Ab und zu gibt es eine kleine Ausstellungen lokaler Künstler, Weinseminare oder Konzerte. Hoffentlich bleibt uns Olaf und sein Team noch lang erhalten.

Ein vergleichbares Gastroangebot sucht in Essen seinesgleichen. Irgendwas zwischen Weinlokal, Bistro und Restaurant. Oft wechselndes kulinarisches Angebot für den kleinen bis großen Hunger. Urige Atmosphäre und ein großes Weinangebot. Service an einem Freitagabend jedoch leider nicht konstant auf hohem Niveau.
