Lai Thai Restaurant am Kehrmännchen in Aachen

This restaurant is located on a quiet square in the center of Aachen. I don't know if it's easily accessible by car, as we arrived by train, which is easily doable. We had made reservations for four people but unexpectedly arrived with six. The welcome was warm, and despite it being quite busy on a Friday evening, they managed to find extra seats. The atmosphere is informal, the decor typically Thai with lots of bamboo. The menu is extensive, and because we never feel like figuring out what all those "Kip Kong Kai" dishes mean, we ordered a set menu. It was quite extensive and started with a fried appetizer with, among other things, tofu and spring rolls—tasty but filling. Then came Tom Khaa Gai soup with bean sprouts and chicken, which tasted just as it should, with plenty of coriander and coconut. The main course consisted of three meat dishes: Pha Med Og Gai, Panang Nüa, and Gäng Phed Ped Yaang. Those interested can look up the exact contents, but it contained beef and duck. It tasted good, but there were hardly any vegetables, and we found it rather greasy because it was heavily breaded and fried. The curry it was prepared in was fine, and the portions were more than ample. Dessert wasn't anything special: two pieces of (again, heavily fried) fried banana and a dollop of whipped cream from a can. The photos show every course we enjoyed. At 65 euros for two people, excluding drinks, this menu was very reasonably priced, but for us Dutch people, eating out in Germany is always cheaper than at home. All in all, we didn't find the food bad, but as fans of Eastern, and especially Thai, cuisine, we've often eaten better elsewhere.

Update: We went again to thin gem. The food and service is really consistent with last time. What a great place Lai Thai is a real gem in Aachen! The food is authentic, full of flavor, and beautifully presented – just like in Thailand. Every dish tastes fresh and carefully prepared, with that perfect balance of spices. On top of that, the service is impeccable – warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, which makes you feel right at home. If you’re looking for traditional Thai food with outstanding hospitality, this is the place to go. Highly recommended!

Very tasty, good service, good food and good price-product

We had dinner at Lai Thai after the RWTH Aachen graduation ceremony and were prepared for a bit of a wait. 30 minutes had already passed before our orders were taken. After ordering, it took about an hour for the food to arrive. We knew the wait from the start, and it wasn't a problem. The problem was: one dish was much spicier than ordered, and one didn't have the extra spice as originally requested. The spiciness level was mixed up. About half of it was already on the plate and no longer edible. The complaint took a long time; we weren't asked if we were satisfied with the meal, and despite raising our hand, it took a while before we were seen. After complaining, only half of the food that was still on the plate was taken to the kitchen to be replaced. After the food was replaced, we discovered that only one half that was still on the plate had been replaced. The improved meal was tasty, but it was very disappointing to only receive half an edible portion in the end. Due to the already long wait and the additional wait for the improved meal, we did not complain again. No compensation was offered, and nothing more than an apology was given. The stress cited as an excuse, as well as the staff shortage in the kitchen, were no consolation for the fact that the restaurant's mistake had so negatively impacted the guest experience. Apart from this error, the food was quite good, but the service staff obviously do not communicate very well with one another, and it was rare for all the waiters to be on the same page. All in all, it was a visit that left us dissatisfied and on our way home.

I used to eat there regularly a few years ago because it was simply delicious and authentic. Today I went for lunch, and it was very bad. The papaya salad was basically just fish sauce, the pad krapao wasn't fish sauce at all, but some run-of-the-mill porridge like you'd get from any Thai delivery service. The massaman was made with pre-cooked potatoes and tasted strongly like a ready meal; there was nothing special about it. The noodles were simply flavorless and completely boring. A complete disappointment for the price.

We had to walk a bit to get there, but the food was delicious. I had the Phad Phed Kai, their spiciest dish. I had the Satay Kai as a starter. A beer on the side. What more could you ask for? A fantastic experience. Absolutely recommended. And even open 7 days a week.

Very big portions and tasty food. Be careful while picking the spice level. My husband loves spice but the 3. level spice was even beyond his liking. You will never find a place to sit around/after 7pm especially on weekends and summer days without a reservation.

The best Thai restaurant in Aachen. The food is excellent. Also very suitable for vegetarians. The service is super friendly, and the ambiance inside and outside is fantastic. During the week, you can get great lunch deals that are really worth it. I highly recommend the two vegetarian spring rolls and the pad priao waan with tofu.

For me, this Thai restaurant in Aachen is simply unbeatable! The variety of dishes is impressive, and I can only warmly recommend the crispy duck in particular. However, what really sets this restaurant apart is the outstanding service. The waitresses are always friendly and accommodating, which makes the visit even more pleasant. In addition, the prices are really fair - for dishes that sometimes cost around 20 euros, you get generous portions that are definitely filling. I can recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to enjoy authentic Thai cuisine in Aachen!

Delicious food, Thai taste, food quantity suitable for the price. Fried fish with chili sauce. Waiting for about 20 minutes. Ordered 5 food menus and 1 dessert menu. The food didn't wait long. It is recommended on Saturdays to go before 4pm to get food quickly and conveniently. People start to get crowded at 4.30pm. The staff are polite and calm and speak many languages. Great Thai food, currently probably the best in Aachen. Large variety of options in the menu. They also offer a good lunch menu. It can get busy, but service and kitchen are typically fast. The prawn Frikadellen and Pad Thai are really good.

marvelous! Amazing food and awesome services! The beef noodle soup is very generous with the ingredients. The waiter even gave me a big jar of hot sauce to add to it. He was very generous and his attitude was super good! I just feel like there are a little few employees? There were too many customers and it felt like the waiters were a bit overwhelmed. Very generous and kind staff, great attitude towards customers, not to mention the dishes are nearly perfect cooked and super delicious! Definitely will come by again! Keep going!

Today was my first visit to this restaurant. This place impressed me with its atmosphere and very tasty food. The portions are large. The staff is very friendly. And the fact that this restaurant always speaks for itself.Thanks for the work. I will definitely visit this place again.

In het verleden veel in dit restaurant gekomen, maar door een onprettige ervaring met de bediening, dit restaurant ook lange tijd gemeden. Nadat we van anderen gehoord hadden dat de bediening veranderd was, nog eens teruggegaan naar Lai Thai. Bediening is vriendelijk en attent, zonder opdringerig te zijn. De prijzen zijn hier minder hard gestegen dan in de meeste andere restaurants, maar tijdens het eten bleek ook dat dit ten koste is gegaan van de kwaliteit en presentatie. Behalve dat de borden soberder opgemaakt zijn, worden er ook goedkopere ingrediënten gebruikt, waardoor de (door ons) bestelde voor- en hoofdgerechten allemaal wat meer doorsnee waren en zeker niet meer van het niveau wat het ooit was. Het is zeker niet slecht, maar kwalitatief is het echt minder geworden en niet meer van het niveau dat het ooit was.

Good pad thai, tasty and strong flavour, But would prefer if its a bit more tangy n soury, the sweetness is a bit strong. But still really like it! BUT THE PORTION IS TOO MUCH OMG 🤣 Good!!!!

The worst restaurant I have ever been. Not even worth to describe how bad the service was.

Unfortunately we left after 90 minutes without food. The time it takes for the food to arrive varies greatly and even after repeated inquiries about where the food is, the kitchen is referred to. Blaming everything on the ordering system doesn't make it any better.

Four of us ate here. The ambience is good, the service was quick and friendly and the restaurant is fairly centrally located. The menu is very extensive. Everyone should find something there. The food was good. Price and performance are right.

Unfortunately it has subsided a lot, we used to get a warm plate and now we haven't been able to get it twice. There has been less food on the plates. Servis is not informed about what is available and what is not. We don't even need to talk about the hygiene condition of the children's chair

Always a pleasure in terms of taste, but the interior could be a bit more careful about cleanliness, for example the table runners made of fabric with the elephant pattern are always a little dirty and the large windows don't always offer a clear view. Overall, always a worthwhile visit.

Food is good and location is good in Aachen

The first time the food was delicious. Went there again a few weeks later. Unfortunately it was really bad that day. The breading on the chicken was very dry and crumbly, the chicken was dry, the rice was a single sticky mess and the curry was mediocre at best. You also save a lot on meat here. Unfortunately I find it very disappointing for the price you get here.

Wir sind immer wieder gerne hier, wenn wir mal in AC sind. Sehr leckere Gerichte, superberer Leute, klasse Ambiente. Alles auch mit Tofu, also für Veggies gut geeignet. Wir geben selten volle 5 Sterne - hier aber passt es absolut. Bis zum nächsten Mal!

Food was a disaster As a European you don't know what you're going to be served, which you don't necessarily know. For our evening The spring rolls were not served. There was no papaya in our papaya salad, just coleslaw (white cabbage). The sauce was sweet and sour and quite spicy. There was also sweet and sour sauce in the duck salad. Completely incomprehensible why Thai food has sweet and sour sauce in it. Usually with lemongrass and fish sauce. My steamed fish was not steamed but boiled with water and the sauce slapped on top. The discussion with the waiter led to nothing. There were only two waiters, one of whom couldn't even speak Thai and disappeared due to the rush. So we had to wait a little longer than normal for the drinks. Prices far too high and far too ambitious. Won't be visiting this place again either. Restaurant ideal for Europeans who are not familiar with Thai food. Remember, if there are no Asians in Asian restaurants, it can't be authentic.

I like to eat lunch here because the lunch menu is very good value for money. It's sometimes quite busy in the restaurant and it's too restless for me in the evenings. But the food tastes really good. The staff is very friendly.

Nothing special. The sauce was low in spices and lacked the typical diverse Thai flavor. Celery was too much. The rice wasn't anything special. No basmati or jasmine. Service very nice.

There were five of us and we celebrated a birthday like the year before. The door was still locked shortly after 6 p.m. and we couldn't get in until about 10 minutes later. It was pretty cold inside all evening. We kept warm with tea and were inclined to put our jackets back on. At another table, some visitors had actually put their jackets back on. The young female waiters were apparently quite inexperienced and it took a long time for the orders to be taken. That was completely different last year. The food, however, was again TOP! Of course, no master comes from heaven, you need experience, but you shouldn't just use newcomers. So when pleasant warmth is provided and more routine develops, I'm happy to give all the stars again, because there are definitely no newbies in the kitchen.

Good Thai restaurant with nice spicy food. Compared to other Thai restaurants, there are three chili peppers on the menu that are really hot, so if you are sensitive, choose one less chili pepper. Service is nice and responds quickly. The ambience is generally nice, but it is very narrow and the acoustics are very bad. Since there are no sound-absorbing elements, it is very, very loud in a full restaurant. Therefore, one star point deducted from the overall rating.

Ein wirklich leckeres Restaurant. Immer wenn ich anderswo Thai esse denke ich, Lai Thai ist besser. Obwohl die jedes Mal eine neue Tischdeko brauchen wenn ich da war, sind sie immer sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend.

This restaurant was an amazingly pleasant surprise in Aachen. The cuisine is absolutely delicious, the authenticity of the Thai kitchen can be felt in every single bite! It feels like you’re eating at grandma’s house (even for the non-thai people, like me), the love presente in every meal is obvious. Plus, the decor is wonderful, very homey. Definitely a must visit! And one of the best comfy food places in the city! Will be returning very soon

Great thai place with large menu catered for every taste and spice levels

Wir waren in einer Gruppe von Sieben Leuten hier und haben eine durchweg positive Erfahrung gemacht. Die Auswahl an Speisen ist reichhaltig, die Portionsgröße in Relation zum Preis anständig. Die Bedienung war freundlich, hat sich Zeit genommen, Fragen zu klären, war aber auch flink unterwegs. Wie authentisch es war kann ich nicht beurteilen, da ich noch nie in Thailand gewesen bin. Fakt ist: es hat allen geschmeckt, alle waren satt und wir werden wieder kommen. Man sollte aber, gerade mit größeren Gruppen, einen Tisch reservieren.

Heerlijk gegeten, het was voor ons ( twee stellen) de eerste keer bij Lai Thai. Niet duur maar wel reserveren! Om 1800 uur blijkt iedereen honger te hebben en was het vol. Aardig was dat de bediening aangaf dat het wat langer kon duren voordat geserveerd kon worden ivm de drukte. Wij gaan zeker terug om ook andere gerechten van de uitgebreide kaart te proberen.
