8 years ago I ate here once before and today I remember it again with fond memories. Really, I can't complain. Ambience: wonderfully small, private booths, old beams, and young service. Food freshly prepared in the pan, hot and delicious! To finish, I sipped a local liqueur, the aroma of which was so good it made my nose happy. Drinking it confirmed I'd buy it. Bad Salzungen

We were here on a Saturday evening just after 5 p.m. and were lucky to be allowed to stay. It's highly recommended to make a reservation if you absolutely want to eat here. We really enjoyed the rustic ambiance. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food was a culinary highlight. Unfortunately, the portions were so small that we didn't feel like we were eating a main course.

The Kartoffelkäfer in Bad Salzungen is a true favorite restaurant for me. I'm impressed every time: The food is simply perfect, fresh, delicious, and prepared with love. The service? Friendly, attentive, and always with a smile. I particularly like the extensive lunch menu; there's something for everyone. And even if you just stop by for a quick coffee, it's worth it because the atmosphere is simply fun. Whether it's crisp salads, fine vegetarian dishes, feta with fruit, a juicy steak, or a classic schnitzel, everything here tastes great! For me, the Kartoffelkäfer is a place where you're happy to come in and guaranteed to leave full and happy. In short: great food, great service, great atmosphere. You just feel at home here. Very tasty... Wiener Schnitzel could have been souffléd more. The chanterelle mushrooms and potato turnovers were perfect... The potato pizza, which we shared at the table as an appetizer, was far too small for the price. The hazelnut ice cream from the Eisenacher Eismanufaktur was amazing... On the other hand, the Bundt cake was so dry that it simply wasn't tasty. The waitress was super friendly and attentive, offering me an espresso or schnapps because of the Bundt cake. Unfortunately, it was too late for an espresso, and I don't drink alcohol... I wish that dish had been removed from the bill... Hence the one-star deduction. The restaurant itself is beautiful and decorated with great attention to detail.

We ate there twice during our stay in Bad Salzungen. The dishes are delicious, the prices are fair, the service is outstanding, and the restaurant is simply very stylish. Everything was freshly cooked. It's a bit like home. And that's great. The waiters are so attentive and friendly, but never intrusive. The only negative point is that the Colorado potato beetle is too far from our home. For us, this is the best restaurant in Bad Salzungen. If we're there again, we'll be happy to come back.

There's also a spot here for solo travelers, without a reservation. - As far as I've heard, you should always reserve a table in advance. The service is friendly and polite. You do have to wait a bit for the food, but it's freshly prepared. The food is delicious and well-balanced. Prices are reasonable. I'd be happy to come back 😉 P.S.: The decor also deserves a mention. Rustic and homey with attention to detail. That alone makes a visit worthwhile.

I wanted to enjoy a potato dish for dinner at the beautifully decorated restaurant that was recommended to me, but unfortunately, I couldn't get a seat because the restaurant is very popular. Nevertheless, I'm giving it 5 stars.

We've been to Bad Salzungen several times and have eaten at the Kartoffelkäfer, and we're already looking forward to our next visit before we leave. The quaint house and its decor are a joy to look at, and we've been delighted with the food every time. You definitely need to make a reservation, though! Otherwise, you'll have to be very lucky to get a table.

Plain on the outside, beautiful on the inside! The food is good, but not outstanding. Perhaps it's the expectations that are raised here, which are also fueled by the rather high prices.

We visited in July 2025 with two adults and a 2-year-old child. Despite the store being packed, the service was great. We received a crayon, something to color in, and a bib for the little one! I've never experienced that with the bib before! The food was delicious, inexpensive, and filling. We each had a potato pizza. The service was courteous and friendly despite the large number of customers. The ambiance is very quaint; you feel like you're in your own living room. Highly recommended!

The food is great, but I wouldn't recommend it to people who don't like potatoes, as almost everything they serve is potato-based. The interior is fantastic, all made of wood and decorated in a beautiful style. So I highly recommend it.

We were among the first guests to arrive yesterday for the evening opening. The quality of the food and drinks is excellent. Whether a portion is too large, too small, or just right is in the eye of the beholder. However, we didn't like the fact that we had to wait a good 25 minutes for the bill, as the restaurant wasn't actually full yet.

Nice, clean rooms and friendly service, but three poorly peeled asparagus spears with a very banal "hollandaise" (canned?) and greasy potato pancakes that weren't cooked! €7.80 for three scoops of ice cream with a few nuts on top... I find that too heavy, especially since I asked for an extra scoop of ice cream instead of cream, as usual, which I didn't get, but I paid the full price! The food quality doesn't match the high 4.7 rating on their website. They wouldn't get a 4 anywhere else.

We spontaneously wanted to go out for dinner today at 5:30 p.m. Unfortunately, despite there being free places, they didn't want to accommodate us. Here you probably have to have an appetite for something savory and make a reservation weeks in advance. Too bad, too bad. Even if you have a walking impairment, you will be sent away. This is how German hospitality works and service. Despite the busy location, we have a place at the Italian restaurant, get something to eat and the necessary humor.

If you're really hungry, there's a lot on offer and the prices are accordingly, but you can easily talk to the staff and put something together yourself.

Everything fits here. Food, service, ambience. With a reservation (one day in advance) we had a great evening. Today you can't do it without a reservation. Good restaurant - well attended, so it's logical that not every walk-in customer gets a seat. You should just know. There should also be space for one or two walk-in customers at lunchtime. Most people go out to eat in the evening. Passion is very important here. It's great that you exist. Keep it up.

Das Städtchen Bad Salzungen hat zentrumsnah eine Hand voll Restaurants zu bieten. Wenige Meter vom Nappenplatz (hier auf jeden Fall parken) findet sich der Kartoffelkäfer. Direkt beim Betreten wird man von der urigen Atmosphäre eingenommen. Auch nach einer halben Stunde findet man immer noch neue Details der sehr liebevoll zusammengetragenen Dekoration. Für mobilitätseingeschränkte Gäste heißt es aus: Augen auf - die Toiletten finden sich im ersten Obergeschoss - zu erreichen über eine recht steile Treppe. Das Team des Kartoffelkäfers macht einen gut eingespielten Eindruck. Der Tresen/Barbereich - auch unter der Treppe - ist recht wenig platzreich - also: Alle Achtung für die unfallfreie Arbeit - da geht alles Hand in Hand und das muss es auch - der Kartoffelkäfer ist zum Mittag am Wochenende immer gut ausgebucht. - ohne Reservierung braucht es großes Glück einen Platz zu ergattern. Wir waren etwas zu früh da, wurden gebeten zu warten bis unser Tisch fertig war. Einmal platziert, folgten die Karten auf den Fuß. Alle Wartezeiten waren übersichtlich und auch wenn der Laden bis auf den letzten Platz besetzt war, kam nie der Eindruck auf, dass der Service an den Gästen vorbeiläuft. Die Speisekarte des Hauses hat natürlich einen Schwerpunkt auf Erdäpfeln - wie der Name schon sagt. Das man außer Kartoffelspalten und Klößen noch einiges Mehr aus der Knolle machen kann, beweist die Kartoffelpizza. Ein besonderes Lob erhielten die hausgemachten Klöße - nach einem Familienrezept. Ich habe mir ein Maredo-Hüftsteak gegönnt. Schade war, dass nicht nach dem Gargrad gefragt wurde. Aber es heißt ja auch Kartoffelkäfer und nicht Steakkäfer - außerdem war das Fleisch schön medium - der Koch hat also genau richtig gelegen. Sehr gut ist auch die Schwarzbiersenfkruste auf dem Steak. Die Kartoffelspalten waren in Ordnung. Das Hirschgulasch kam sehr gut an und auch die Rinderroulade wurde sehr gerne gegessen. Die Preisgestaltung wirkt teils sehr selbstbewusst, teils aber auch wieder günstig - z.B. ist das Steak mit 26,90 EUR durchaus preiswert zu haben.

We had a table on the upper floor and even though the waitress girls had to run up and down the stairs the whole time, we never suffered any hardship. With a full house! Super tasty and reasonably priced too. We've been trying to have lunch there for weeks now. Nothing is possible without a reservation. It's a shame. Edit after answer: Maybe I should have said that spontaneously nothing is possible anymore. We always ate at your place regularly on weekends and found it a shame that there wasn't even room for two people after 1 p.m. We don't even try anymore before 12 p.m. When things weren't going so well, especially during the Corona period, you were a welcome guest and now you get really cheeky justifications here. His point of view could have been formulated with a completely different undertone.

We went for dinner and also stayed overnight in the guesthouse. The breakfast was also great. Everything was excellent. It was even far better than the 3 star hotel in town that we had 3 weeks before.

We were there with 10 people on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, and had booked the table for the opening of the restaurant at 5:00 p.m. because some had to go home soon. Even though we were the first to enter the restaurant, we waited almost 1.5 hours for our food - an absolute no go... The service was unfriendly and even though I pointed out our time pressure several times, they still treated us that way keep waiting for a long time. The food and ambience were ok - the service was subpar - I won't be back!!

The location is pleasantly quaint, but I found the staff to be annoyed on both visits. Unfortunately, the quality of the food does not match the location, the fried potatoes and schnitzel were fried in oil, which in my opinion should traditionally be fried in butter or goose fat if you already have potato specialties.

Despite repeated questions about a children's chair, it was not made available to us. The food was very tasty and the ambience was also very nice.

So I'm so disappointed, first you stand in front of it and wait for the beetle to open. Then the time has come and you find out that everything is reserved. If you had put a notice outside, it would be a great idea. Sorry, I come from the catering industry myself, it's actually usual to always leave tables free for walk-in customers. I don't know anything like that where the whole store is reserved. Maybe rethink the concept. Kind regards from Berlin
