Kartoffelhaus GmbH in Jena

We booked a table for eight people three weeks in advance. When we got there, they unfortunately only gave us a table for five, with three additional chairs crammed in. It was incredibly cramped and uncomfortable, even though there were plenty of tables available. The reason given was that they didn't want to open a second area. When we then asked if we could sit outside, they unfortunately declined, saying that they didn't want to open the outdoor area yet either (even though the tables were already outside). Of course, it was also a weekend, so there was hardly anywhere else to go on short notice. Luckily, after a quick call, L'Osteria was understanding of our situation with the Kartoffelhaus and quickly freed up an additional table for us, even though they were also quite full. At least the Kartoffelhaus was okay with it when we said we didn't want to eat crammed into such a small table and would rather leave. (Hence two stars) I can't say whether the food tastes good, so it's fair not to deduct any points.

Maybe the potato house should just crush the outdoor spaces! When you aren't served outside and the service doesn't pay attention to whether someone is sitting outside and wants to eat something! After waiting half an hour, I decided to spend my money somewhere else!

Super unfriendly waiter because I only drank something with the baby and didn't eat anything else. Never again

07/31/24 Update - Tobi is the best, friendliest, and nicest waiter I know, great food without fat and incredibly delicious - thank you so much 😘 After half a year, we tried again, but the fried potatoes are swimming in fat, soft, and wobbly. Too bad - we're saying goodbye forever 🥲

We were there for the second time. But you should record it. Without a seat reservation it often happens that you don't get there. But that also tells you why. We liked it and if you love potatoes you've come to the right place

Cozy location - attentive & polite service - the food (chicken fillet, mushrooms in cream sauce with fried potatoes).. unfortunately only mediocre in terms of quality... fried potatoes should be much crispier & the cream on the mushrooms less thick... Otherwise, however, a pleasant stay. Thank you very much..kk* PS.. schnitzel should definitely be taken out of the pan and not the deep fryer... onto the plate... then the quality may be right...

We were there again recently and everything was great as always! As always, the food is delicious and the prices are great! The staff was also very friendly as always. :) The potato house is highly recommended!

An institution in Jena. Good food with plenty of choice, no long waits and good quality at fair prices. (During the week) I surprisingly got a reservation for the next evening at 6 p.m. - but reservations for the evening are definitely recommended. We'd love to come back.

Absolutely quaint and cozy. The staff is super friendly. The food is very good in terms of portion size, selection, appearance and presentation. Absolutely within the price range. The menu is on the table as a placemat, the drinks menu is on the bottle. Nice idea. I'll definitely be back. Parking options are rather rare. The nearby parking garage is recommended here. For electric cars, it's best to connect at the bus station and then walk about 5 minutes to the restaurant.

Food highly recommended! It's always well attended, which speaks for itself! Prices are absolutely reasonable and the portions are large and tasty.

Jena area...city center quite okay...very flooded...partly full. Service very nice and friendly. Food? well...could be better... somehow on the table after what felt like 10 minutes. Whether everything is made fresh...I have no idea you would have to look in the kitchen...☺️. But quite okay.

After a long, long, far too long time, I finally made it to the potato house with my friends. And what can I say? It was simply sorely necessary, I haven't had such a good potato casserole in a long time, and that as old, genuine potato itself. So, I can highly recommend the Calabrian spinach casserole with shepherd's cheese, as well as the potato pancakes gratinated with tomatoes, mozzarella and pesto as a starter. But the others all seemed to be very happy with their selection, and for some there was even enough for a small dessert. Add to that the rustic ambience and the warm hospitality - one thing is certain: I will come a few more times and hopefully not too far away. Because the menu is huge, just like my newly ignited hunger for good potato dishes!

The food has declined in recent years. Pretty neutral taste. Luckily there was pepper and salt on the table. But service is very good! Nice and friendly!

This is a wonderful place for experiencing traditional german cuisine. My personal favourite is the thuringian grill platter that they serve with potato wedges. For a small surcharge you can also swap the sides with creamy mashed potatoes as well. The decor is traditional and brings back images of a warm cosy tavern on a wintry evening. However, there can be waiting times so making a prior reservation is a good idea.

A very cozy atmosphere and a nice ambience. Nice and courteous service. The food eaten is a treat in my opinion. I would eat there again and again if I was in Jena. Big praise from us. Pre-ordering is important as all seats are almost always full.

Ambience and service are really good! To all friends of spare ribs...don't do it! These are at most house-style ribs...they looked like Kassler but in reality they didn't look like spareribs. I can recommend everything else with a good heart...

Delicious food with a relatively good selection. The female waiter was very nice and also fulfilled our special requests. The only point of criticism that I have heard from other friends is the menu. Unfortunately, the contrast is very poor (light brown on yellow paper) and the font is very small. Especially if you sit on the upper floor, as the lighting conditions are relatively dim.

I want to eat German food! It fulfilled that feeling perfectly. Sausage, German potatoes, sauerkraut and weizen! It was delicious and filling, so I was very satisfied! The white beer I drank for the first time was also easy to drink. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was good and we had a fun meal🇩🇪

We arrived at the inn spontaneously and things didn't start well. When we asked if we could get two seats, a somewhat strange but visibly noticeable discussion began between the staff, with facial expressions and body language that said, please leave. This isn't a problem if you just communicate it normally. We understand when it is full and we only enter spontaneously. Well...in the end we found two places and now everything was fine. The food was excellent, the service was very friendly, nice and attentive. So, unfortunately, a failed start, but after that everything was fine. We still recommend it, even if the reviews somehow generally suggest that there is a small management problem with reservations, places and processes.

Rundum war alles super. Am ersten Abend kamen wir spontan (20:40 Uhr) vorbei, sie ließen uns als große Gruppe (10 Erwachsene + 1 Kind) dort noch Essen und Trinken, obwohl um 21 Uhr Küchenschluss ist und sie um 22 Uhr schließen. Andere Restaurants in der Nähe haben uns leider nicht mehr zum Essen dort bedienen wollen. Das Servicepersonal ist flott, trotzdem am Tisch geduldig, freundlich und nimmt sich Zeit. Das Essen (bei so einer großen Gruppe haben wir ziemlich viel von der Karte probieren können) kam bei allen sehr gut an und es hat allen sehr gut geschmeckt. Wir sind am nächsten Abend wieder gekommen, nur früher, und es war genau das gleiche Erlebnis. Die gesamte Gruppe war begeistert und würde dort wieder essen gehen.

The host who greets guests is quite unpleasant, rude, and completely inattentive, showing some racist behavior toward international customers. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant at all. The quality of the dishes has declined significantly, especially considering how exquisite they used to be. This is why I would rate it so poorly.

Food was tasty, but a little too salty. A highlight for me was the non-alcoholic Hefeweizen. Also worth highlighting is the large selection of vegetarian dishes.

Very disappointing - our first time here was also the last time...the fried potatoes were not freshly prepared but old and unseasoned, the grilled bread was also old and tasted bland and partly moldy. Schnitzel was also old. The food inspector has to take a look here. Not recommended...we won't be back!

I recently visited this restaurant and had one of the most disappointing dining experiences of my life. The service was appalling, and it was clear that the head staff was engaging in unwelcoming behaviour towards our group. From the moment we walked in, we were treated with disdain and made to feel unwelcome as a foreigner. The server made it clear that they expected us to order less, implying that we couldn't afford to dine there. To make matters worse, we were outright asked to leave and go to a "cheap restaurant" instead. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and has no place in any establishment. As someone who values respect and enjoy food we always tip good and bill more than a decent amount, I am deeply hurt and offended by this experience. I urge anyone considering a visit to think twice.

The potato house mainly serves Thuringian cuisine. I can warmly recommend a visit to the potato house to every visitor from outside Thuringia. You go in hungry and come out full and satisfied. 😉

The food was very tasty, the service was very friendly and I would definitely recommend the restaurant The only problem with our visit is that the front door was difficult for some to close, we sat close to the door and it was cool outside. Therefore it was always very fresh and it was relatively cool for me, which is why 1 star was deducted from the ambience, but on the whole I would definitely recommend it We would love to come back!

We were looking forward to a lovely evening and delicious food. We had inflexible staff and food that wasn't tasty. The chicken fillet could not be exchanged for pork fillet, even for an additional charge. The meat was dry and well-done, the fried potatoes were greasy to the point of being unbearable and you almost had to search in vain for the vegetables among the greasy tubers. The pans with bacon and egg were also extremely greasy and not very seasoned but still ok. The schnitzel was good. shall we come again? not until further notice!

Highly Recommended!!! If I could I would give many more stars. The waiter here was bombastic, had a quick joke on his lips, and was friendly with all guests, even the little ones. The restaurant is rustic, the floorboards creak and the atmosphere is simply authentic, we really liked it. The food was incredibly tasty and the portions were almost too big.

At a celebration with 7 people, we were well looked after and everyone enjoyed it. The waitress was extremely friendly and the food was good and attractively prepared. Definitely worth recommending!
