Kartoffelhaus "Am Schüppchenberg" in Freiberg

What a shame! We were there 10 years ago and the food was amazing. Now, for my birthday, I thought we could eat there again. First of all, we were crammed into a very small table for four right next to the door, and when guests came in, it got so cold. OK, the waiter quickly offered us another table which was definitely better and a bit bigger. Anyway, now we come to the main issue. The fat in the starter was abysmally bad. Solid as a rock, you couldn't even spread it on the bread, and the fat was on top of everything else at the bottom. Main course: The pork knuckle looked like boiled elephant pee with a white mush on it. The goulash with red cabbage was an absolute insult to our taste buds. The currywurst tasted like it came from the supermarket around the corner. We are extremely disappointed with the chef, you just can't offer something like that in a restaurant. It was the last time we ever eat in the restaurant. What a waste of money. The tip was for the service, which was absolutely top-notch.

Unfortunately, we can't rate the food, as we were greeted with "Oh, shh..."! Admittedly, we were a bit late and were still looking for a place to eat shortly after 8 p.m. (2 adults, 2 children). We really liked the Kartoffelhaus; it looked cozy (perhaps it is, considering you're allowed to sit down). The four or five free tables had "Reserved" signs on them, but that was probably more to prevent anyone else from sitting down. It's a real shame! The waitress couldn't even tell when we arrived whether we were just looking for a drink... but the welcome was definitely enough for us! I shouldn't give it any stars other than the ambiance! Unfortunately, that's not possible, because then the review won't be posted...

A very nice, rustic restaurant where you can not only enjoy a variety of home-style potato dishes, but also a wide variety of casseroles and other dishes (e.g., falafel). The food is also reasonably priced (around €14 to €19). The atmosphere, reminiscent of an old farmhouse, is particularly appealing. The Kartoffelhaus is popular, so reservations are recommended.

2025: 2 stars (downgrade) The food is acceptable, but the amount of dip for the really great chips is really meager. Otherwise, the food is full of rich spices; a bit of salt would have helped... What's absolutely unacceptable is that starting about 2 hours before the restaurant closes, you're asked every 5 minutes (seriously, no joke!) if you "want anything else," even though you've just received your drinks... In German, "you're asked to finally leave so the restaurant can finish work." Wow, no wonder no one visits restaurants like this in the evenings anymore when they know they'll be "asked out" at some point. In the end, they didn't even manage to get the billing right :-( 2019: 3 stars

The food is excellent, and I personally like the ambiance. The staff is friendly. After dinner, I felt a bit uncomfortable; it seemed like they asked us every 15 minutes whether we needed anything else (to order). The restaurant was already quite empty at that point.

Unfortunately, the quality has declined so much that we won't be eating here again. We used to enjoy eating here, but the chef doesn't seem to have much enthusiasm or experience. The schnitzel wasn't pounded, the fried potatoes were subpar, and the salad with vinaigrette used to be better. Only the service was attentive. It's a shame it's declined so much. They also didn't serve potato schnapps at the end, which they've already cut down.

We reserved a table and had a wonderful meal for four. We all ordered something different and were not disappointed. The service was very attentive and the food was excellent. We were all more than satisfied with our dishes. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Bamberg

The food is highly recommended. The ambiance is special. It's almost like a small museum. There's a lot to see, and many items from earlier times have been restored; anyone familiar with them can reminisce. The service is very good, although one of the waiters was a bit grim. Highly recommended for families, parties, or simply meeting friends. Reservations are recommended, though.

Good food, friendly service, price is right too

If you like potatoes, you'll love this place! Cozy and quaint restaurant with good potato cuisine at reasonable prices. The service was attentive, but on the day we visited, it was so busy that even the best staff could barely keep up, resulting in longer wait times. Therefore, one star deducted (but I fully understand, as you really tried to please everyone). The food was delicious and met my expectations exactly. One wish/idea: your delicious potato chips to go. A side tip: There are hardly any free parking spaces, so allow a little extra time to find one and remember to feed the parking meters. AND it's best to reserve a table in advance, as the Kartoffelhaus is often very busy.

The food was very good, but the fries weren't really seasoned, they could have used a little more salt. Otherwise everything was fine and very good. It's definitely worth a visit.

As always, the atmosphere was very cozy and the service was top. Unfortunately the food can't keep up. The legendary chips were not worth their name. Sticky and the portion is too small for the price. The Gorgonzola dip tastes very bland. The potato casserole was boring. Too bad. We won't be coming back any time soon.

We were at Kartoffelhaus today and discovered that the service was extremely rude. The waitress had barely any teeth in her mouth and was barely understandable, and very rude on top of that. After we'd finished eating, we were ignored for 20 minutes even though our glasses were empty, and the waitress made it clear to us that she wanted to go home. On top of that, the schnitzel wasn't pounded and was so thin that it was impossible to eat (we left it whole on the plate). A complete disaster for us, and we can't recommend the restaurant and won't be coming back.

Food was very, very tasty. The rooms are simply brilliant. It was just a little cold. Possibly radiated from the cold wall? The service was a bit abrupt. Place an order, Zack, Zack, I would find something more personal, with humor and a good mood to be more pleasant. Because going out to eat should always be a special experience, I think.

First of all, a huge compliment to the kitchen. It was super tasty, everything was beautifully prepared. As the saying goes, you eat with your eyes. Regarding the service, apart from the fact that the female waiter had no teeth in her mouth, which isn't particularly attractive, the service was very courteous. So all in all it was very good. The ambience is something different but still very cozy. The potato house is definitely worth a visit. 😊

In any case, you should have been to the potato house at least once, there is a lot to discover and you can also go back in time while enjoying a good meal. Gladly again at any time.

Das Ambiente und die Bedienung waren toll. Das Essen entsprach nicht im Mindesten unseren Erwartungen. Der große Kartoffelpuffer sollte mit Schinken und Zwiebeln gefüllt sein-wir haben nichts dergleichen entdeckt beim Verzehr. Der Puffer war "Klunsch"....pampig und schien aus fertigem Pulver hergestellt zu sein..... Wir werden vielleicht noch mal Einkehren, um zu testen ob diese negative Erfahrung Programm ist, oder es doch nur ein Ausrutscher war..... Mit der gesammelten Erfahrung ist eine Empfehlung der Location nicht möglich...

Absolute comfort in one of the oldest miners' buildings in Freiberg. Courteous, attentive service, good food quality and the menu alone is a story in itself. Everything tastes good, value for money is also appropriate, location on the edge of the old town, it's best to always reserve in advance

Unfortunately it hasn't been what it used to be for a long time. The food and service have deteriorated a lot. No variety at all. My potato casserole was only lukewarm today.

Beautiful old house with old furniture, super rustic. Really great. The food tasted very good (the chips as a starter were great), everything was fresh and very nicely prepared. Points deducted because of the service in the last half hour we were no longer served or asked for. The appearance was hardly acceptable for a service person (no teeth left in her mouth) and she should have spoken to us more and better.

We were there for the first time. It's not very big, but it's very comfortable. You feel like you have been transported back to another time and there is a lot to discover. One likes it, the other doesn't. We really liked it. We hadn't booked a table but we were still greeted very nicely and given a nice little table. The service was very friendly and the food was excellent. Okay, maybe a little overpriced, which adjusted the ambience a bit. Definitely highly recommended and we will take a look again on our next visit to Freiberg.

The food was okay, but definitely overpriced - it's just not value for money. The waitress wasn't particularly friendly either, which didn't make the atmosphere any more pleasant. The restaurant's interior also takes some getting used to: the decoration looks more like a horror house, which makes it difficult to feel comfortable. Overall the visit was disappointing and I won't go there again.

Positive: The food was very good, the ambience was outstanding. Negative: One had the feeling that the working atmosphere was not the best. The waitress had a hard time smiling and wasn't particularly friendly. I find the business policy of charging extra for every little extra to be extremely negative and not guest-oriented. Charging a change of side dish (from fries to potatoes) at EUR 1.50 is more than cheeky. When asked about a slice of bread (there was still lard left), answering that you have to charge extra for the slice of bread is not customer-oriented. The excuse of higher costs doesn't count either. Too bad. The guest does not come first here.

A great place for good conversations over a glass of nice drinks and good food. Nice attendants with calm and respect. I enjoyed my meal and also the cosy environment offered at this place. Cost is moderate and affordable.

I found the food very tasty. However, I wasn't completely full after e a potato pancake, especially since it was really delicious and I would order it again. The ambience is quite dark. And if it were possible, the beer garden could be enlarged so that larger groups can sit outside in the summer. But we'll definitely be back.

Food an absolute failure. Old ingredients... carelessly prepared dishes, some of which were not tasty. The service staff was not very friendly and even lacked insight when we complained about our food. It's a real shame because we enjoyed staying there...but we won't be able to get there any time soon!

Enjoyed every visit to the potato house! Inside and out it is extremely quaint, rustic and cozy. The food and drinks are very delicious and the prices are normal. All employees are very friendly and accommodating. A few times there was even a schnapps on the house at the end. Parking free of charge in the Eherne-Schnecke car park or Wasserturmstrasse Mon-Fri from 6 p.m. and WE from 2 p.m. in the area where parking is required

I can't understand the five star reviews. (like one or the other here) The location and the ambience are nice and quaint. The food is rather below average. I had the potato soup “Alter Fritz” and the Sachsenschnitzel. For €6.95 the soup tureen could have been larger. In terms of taste, the soup was oversalted and visually brownish. Brownish is okay, but they could have been cooked in a more modern and attractive way. Now to the main course, the schnitzel. Conclusion is quite nice. The schnitzel was good, but some kind of spice mixture was sprinkled on the breading. As a result, half of the schnitzel was salty and the other half was covered with a touch of mushroom sauce. The fried potatoes were just bad for a potato house. Potatoes cut into cubes and pulled through the pan with oil and bacon are far from being fried potatoes. You searched in vain for roasted aromas and here again this spice mixture was sprinkled generously over everything. The service was initially difficult. When the restaurant was half full, service decreased significantly. In the end we waited 20 minutes with empty drinks until the service showed up again Conclusion: You can go there, but I wouldn't go there again and would look for another restaurant. For a potato house, there is a lot of work to be done on the potato side dishes and soups. The service can also go a step further.

Ich war zu meinem Geburtstag dort mit einem Teil meiner Familie, da das Kartoffelhaus mir empfohlen wurde von Freunden,dachte ich,da geh ich mal hin,leider war ich sehr enttäuscht, Bratkartoffeln waren nicht gewürzt und total weich gekocht,die Sülze viel auseinander und schmeckte nach nichts,das Schnitzel war wie aus Pappe einer Tiefkühlkost, so schlecht haben wir noch nie gegessen,die Kellnerin bot uns Eis und Schnaps an,als Wiedergutmachung, haben das dankend abgelehnt,wer weiß wie das noch geschmeckt hätte!!Wir werden dort nicht mehr hin gehen,die Kellnerin war sehr nett,aber das hat das Essen auch nicht schmackhafter gemacht....Schade

I was here for the first time. The restaurant takes you through the decades and centuries with its construction and the objects collected. Of course it's not for everyone. I liked it because it wasn't everyday. The food and service were ok, although the prices are a bit high. Gladly again and again.

Small portions, value for money is not right

We were a bit disappointed. We found the dishes a bit bland and the service could have been a bit more welcoming. We hadn't been there in years and were really looking forward to the evening, we really expected a little more. We can't understand the other reviews because it really wasn't that great for us. It's a shame, the location and ambience are something special...but the dishes and the drive of the service are not. I don't think the casseroles for €18 are justified for the size and quality.

We had a delicious meal here, were served very friendly and courteous and felt very comfortable in the restaurant. The price/performance ratio was pleasant for the time being.

If you like potatoes, you've come to the right place! Due to the small dining room, the seating is quite tight, but the food is all the better. Sometimes you have to wait a bit for your food, but the chips are perfect for the waiting time!

Gestern Abend verbrachten wir ln angenehmer Atmosphäre Zeit im traditionellen , urigen Kartoffelhaus. Leider enthielt der ORIGILALE KARTOFFELPUFFER keine geriebenen Kartoffeln ( nicht ein Fädel war zu sehen) . Auf Nachfrage hieß es " ja wir mischen mit Klossteig". Der Abend war sehr schön, trotzdem.

Very hearty, if you like home cooking, it's ok

Hier im Kartoffelhaus ist es absolut urig, in einem der ältesten Häuser Freibergs, fühlt man sich sehr wohl und vom Essen ganz zu schweigen, einfach lecker und auch das Personal ist sehr freundlich und aufmerksam, wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder, Fazit, absolut empfehlenswert!!!

Das Ambiente ist richtig toll. Wann fühlt sich wohl. Personal ist freundlich. Essenspreise sind in Ordnung, Wir wunderten uns jedoch über die Portionsgrößen. Gefühlt 3 Esslöffel Kartoffelsuppe für knapp 6€. Rindergulasch waren gefühlt 3 kleine Stücken Fleisch auf dem Teller.

Wir haben es vor 2 Jahren entdeckt und waren bisher oft dort essen. (Vor kurzem erst wieder). Es ist immer wieder sehr lecker, aber auch der Service ist sehr zuvorkommend/freundlich. Die Einrichtung ist rustikal eingerichtet.

Bedienung wirke etwas lustlos. Weil wir nicht reserviert hatten wurden wir in die letzte Ecke verbannt. Speisekartenangebot ist überschaubar Speisenqualität eher durchschnittlich, geschmacklich und qualitativ nicht überzeugend. Preis in Ordnung.

Gutes Essen, freundliches Personal und schönes Ambiente. War hatten einen Tisch draußen aber auch der innenbereich ist schön gestaltet. Es gibt viele verschiedene Varianten von Kartoffelgerichten. Es ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei.

Wow, was für ein tolles Restaurant. Sinnvoll ist eine Reservierung, da es sehr gut besucht ist. Tolles Essen, sehr schmackhaft, klasse Bedienung.

Haben uns spontan für Freiberg zu einem Kurzurlaub entschieden. Bei der Erkundung der Stadt haben wir das Kartoffelhaus entdeckt und hatten Glück noch zwei Plätze zu bekommen. So eine urige, liebevoll dekorierte Gaststätte haben wir schon ewig nicht mehr gesehen, Schock-verliebt.....Hier passt alles, das Essen super lecker....Preise total in Ordnung.....das Personal sehr, sehr freundlich und aufmerksam. Ein großes Dankeschön für die gute Bewirtung....wenn man in Freiberg ist, ist diese Gaststätte ein Muss....

Essen war super lecker, jedoch kann ich nicht verstehen, dass wenn auf Grund von Allergien eine Zutat am Gericht weggelassen werden muss, dass ganze mit 1.50 € berechnet wird. Trotz allem kann man's empfehlen.

Ein kleines niedliches Fachwerkhaus mit viel Potential. Essen Bedienung einfach super. Wer da nicht hingeht ist selber schuld.

Vorweg muss ich sagen, dass ich nicht reserviert hatte. Als 1 Person fand ich das nicht so dringend. Allerdings wurden mir dann auch die allerletzten Ecken, drin unter einer Treppe von der evtl. der Staub ins Essen rieselt, oder draussen im Eck auf einer Schräglage, angeboten. Ich entschied mich für draussen und musste im Nachhinein feststellen, dass die anderen reservierten Tische, erst als ich ging, besetzt wurden. Man hätte ja auch ein Zeitlimit setzen können, zu der man mit Essen fertig sein sollte, denn ich wollte wirklich nur schnell was essen. Schade, das ganze hat bei mir einen schlechten Eindruck hinterlassen.

Selten so gut gegessen, Großer Kartoffelpuffer mit Salat. Puffer wie bei Oma. Gemischter, frischer Salat mit Feige, Dressing super lecker. Kräuterdip dazu - perfekt. Dazu noch eine tolle, freundliche Bedienung. Gerne kommen wir wieder 🥰

Urgemütlich, da es sehr schön eingerichtet ist. Mit allerhand Antikem, Nippes und mehr. Man kann ewig gucken. Die Bedienung war sehr freundlich und das Essen fanden wir sehr, sehr lecker!

Ambiente super Personal freundlich. Essen war frisch aber sehr geschmacksneutral. Hatten den Kartoffelauflauf und die Kartoffelgnoccis in Tomatensoße.

Wie bereits mehrmals erwähnt sehr uriges Ambiente. Man muss es mögen. Aber essen an sich sehr lecker mit vielen Interessenten Variationen.
