Kanaan in Berlin

We had the sharing menu and therefore had a good overview. The taste is actually rather one-dimensional and really nothing unusual. The highlight was the simple eggplant with tomato. There were several lowlights: the house bread (simple, dry flatbread) WITHOUT dips, “Napoleons” puff pastry with wild herb cream, the dessert. Small tables (the opened wine in the bottle cooler was simply placed on the floor next to the fan heater after it was served). The service was friendly, but not entirely attentive.

All in all an annoying experience... There is actually only one menu in the evening for 29 EUR per person. (See photo) It all comes at once and is quite small for two people. Therefore, I find the price-performance ratio questionable. If it was an "all you can eat" menu and we could have ordered individual items, then we were not told. We would describe the overall atmosphere in the store as “annoying” and stressful. As soon as you come in, you run into other guests waiting between the counter and the door, which creates an unpleasant feeling. The employees seem overwhelmed and rushed. When in contact, they are friendly and do their best, but are really difficult to understand because they communicate in hasty English which is difficult or only partial to follow. The atmosphere in the restaurant is like a canteen and quite loud. The food is good! That's why you do this to yourself. Maybe I'll go there again if there's something to order from the menu. There should be, but I can't for the life of me see WHEN. 🫨

Disappointing lunch, soggy tepid cauliflower ‘fritters’ drenched in hummus.

We had a menu that was very diverse and extremely tasty. So colorful, so interesting in terms of flavor combinations, good service and at the end a warming, delicious orange blossom tea. Not cheap, but not expensive either, but you should have an appetite to enjoy it adequately. Absolute recommendation👌

I really liked the food because it is something very different from what there is in other places. I ordered the two Palestinian dishes and the dessert, I would like to know how they make the vegan cheese sauce because it was very delicious.

Food very delicious, good varied creations. Of course the idea and cause behind it also very supportable. This sound stuck up, however for the money you pay a bit nicer and cleaner atmosphere is not too much to ask i think!

There were three of us eating and we didn't make a reservation. We got a table in the back room. Unfortunately there was a foul smell coming from the kitchen. A menu only is offered for €29.00; you cannot order dishes individually. We were looking forward to visiting the restaurant because Kanaan was recommended by “With pleasure”. The cuisine is said to be Israeli-Palestinian. So we expected fine Levantine food and were disappointed. The beetroot was not fresh and completely tasteless, the cauliflower was overcooked and watery, the coconut milk dessert also tasted watery. There was little good in this “menu” worth mentioning. In short, tasteless food for too much money. The very friendly service was positive, although - as in Mitte - they only spoke English. We were asked if we enjoyed the food. After we politely said no, the price for 1 menu was waived.

Too much hip, not enough top! December 16th, reserved at 6:00 p.m., for 5 people, got a table for 4. None of the photos so far show what it looked like at our table: the plates piled on top of each other everywhere, hardly any space for the cutlery on the left or right. Tasty, but too expensive. Despite promises to the contrary, we constantly had to put our empty plates on an empty neighboring table ourselves. Nobody asked for a second drink until 7:40 p.m. - I had to get up and ask for a coffee. But the invoice was presented at 7:45 p.m. because the second round of bookings was due at 8 p.m. At 7:50 p.m. we hadn't had our coffee yet when the completely blasé, arrogant request came to vacate the table. When I remarked that we would finish drinking first, the woman suddenly couldn't understand/speak English anymore and sent a colleague. In the back part (towards the toilet) of the guest room there was a cloaky smell. Repetition excluded.

Keines der bisherigen Fotos zeigt, wie es dann an unserem Tisch aussah: die Teller überall übereinander getürmt, rechts und links kaum Platz für das Besteck. Lecker zwar, aber zu teuer. Trotz anderslautender Zusage mussten wir ständig unsere leeren Teller selber auf einen leeren Nachbartisch stellen. Bis 19:40 fragte niemand nach einem zweiten Getränkewunsch - ich musste aufstehen und mich nach einem Kaffee erkundigen. 19:45 wurde aber die Rechnung vorgelegt, weil 20:00 die zweite Buchungsrunde anstand. 19:50 hatten wir den Kaffee noch nicht getrunken, als die vollkommen blasiert arrogante Aufforderung kam, den Tisch frei zu geben. Auf meine Bemerkung, dass wir erst austrinken würden, konnte frau plötzlich auch kein Englisch mehr verstehen/sprechen und schickte eine Kollegin. Im hinteren Teil (in Richtung Toilette) des Gastraums roch es kloakisch. Wiederholung ausgeschlossen.

We were there for brunch with 5 people at lunchtime. Very tasty food and more than filling. Absolute recommendation!

Man hat das Gefühl, dass man als Nichtstammgast trotz Reservierung nicht erwünscht ist. Der Service ist unfreundlich und hört bei der Bestellung nicht zu, im Restaurant ist es kalt. Das Essen war gut, hätte wärmer sein können, Vorspeisen und Hauptgerichte kamen zusammen. Wir kommen nicht wieder und empfangen das Restaurant nicht.

I‘m so glad you’ve brought back Hummshuka. It was actually my first and favorite dish when I first discovered Kanaan years ago in the old location.

Very nice restaurant. We were there for brunch and did order two different dishes. For us already the starters were too much but everything was very tasty and we enjoyed it a lot. We will definitely come back to test the dinner options, but I can highly recommend coming here and enjoying the food. Especially in summer when you can sit outside. Also, we liked that it is a card only restaurant.

I visited this place for the first time tonight and it was an excellent experience. The menu was set and consisted of seven vegetarian dishes. The hummus with the vegan ragout was simply spectacular, but all the other dishes were delicious too. The waiter was extremely friendly, served us immediately and explained the menu in detail. I will definitely come back! Sono state stasera per la prima volta in this locale and is state an'ottima esperienza. The menu is now fisso, constituted by several vegetarian dishes. The hummus with the vegan ragù is in your heart's content, but it also has a very delicious taste. The camera is gentilissimo, it serves subito and it has an illustration of the menu in minute detail. Ci tornerò safe!

Food has been great and I like the one menu concept. Unfortunately it's been cold inside and it's been loud. Two things that can easily be changed. Service was nice and friendly but rather occupied and some confusion who was handling our table. Unfortunately we had to wait almost an hour until we were served that meant we had dinner 9 pm.

There were three of us and we had dinner quite early or lunch late. The rooms are small and simply furnished, but with a charm of Canaan, the biblical landscape. There is a hint of Arab-Israeli flair. If you need mica, you should go somewhere else. We liked it very much. Everything clean. The team was very friendly towards us and we immediately had a good impression. Great menu. Selected and got food quickly. Everything was good so far, but then things got significantly better. The food was incredibly good for all of us, no, excellent. We were thrilled and the portions were more than enough. Beautifully prepared and served in the dish from the oven, the food remained pleasantly hot. A fascinating taste. We were given great advice about dessert and enjoyed it even more to the fullest. It wasn't cheap but it wasn't expensive either, but it was certainly appropriate for the taste experience. In short: we were thrilled. We cannot confirm all the negative criticism read here. We'll definitely be happy to come back. P. S. I treated myself to the cookbook and have already read a few things. It's worth it. We'll be cooking with it next week!

The food was beautifully explained and described when served. Since we didn't know what was available beforehand, it felt a bit like we were staying with friends. The many small dishes had very varied flavors, some of which were new to us. A feast for the palate. And the result was a very pleasant satiety and wholesomeness. Absolutely recommended.

Went here for my birthday lunch during a trip to Berlin with my husband and 4 month old son. The food and service were absolutely amazing and it’s a very baby friendly place! Great ambience and music too. We got the set lunch menu which included lots of food but definitely the way to go. Great Israeli red wine, too!

A delicious menu is served. A vegetarian version is also available. The official language with the fast and friendly service is English. Table reservations are strongly recommended. A visit is very worthwhile.

The interior is unfortunately a bit worn and dingy. But above all: it's incredibly cold in the restaurant! After two hours we were completely frozen! The evening menu was put on the table in one go - we hadn't expected that. The staff tried hard. But the dishes were tasty and beautifully presented. Perhaps more recommended in summer.

We had dinner in this restaurant. The food is delicious, very fine and tasty, the best hummus I ever had! I had Israeli a wine that was very light and perfect with the food we had. The only downside I think it is slightly overpriced.

Disappointing Experience: Unprofessional Staff, Poor Atmosphere, and Bad Service Our visit to this restaurant was a complete disaster from start to finish. The food was utterly unappetizing, as we found hair in our dishes not once, but three separate times. When we brought this to the staff's attention, instead of apologizing or fixing the issue, they were incredibly rude and pushy, going so far as to accuse us of being responsible for the hair—despite the fact that the hair color didn't match anyone at our table. The situation only got worse when a staff member followed us outside to "defend" themselves, insisting that none of their employees had that hair color. This level of unprofessionalism was shocking and made an already uncomfortable evening even more unbearable. The atmosphere was dull and uninviting, and the menu was extremely limited. On top of that, we were pressured into taking a set menu, which was overpriced for the poor quality we received. The price-to-quality ratio is terrible, and the owner strolling around the restaurant with their coat on added to the unprofessional vibe. Staff members also openly stared at us, making the whole experience even more unpleasant. Overall, I would not recommend this place. The food is subpar, the staff is unprofessional and aggressive, and the entire experience was extremely disappointing.

The staff is friendly, the food is very average, the only two dishes we liked are hummus and beet salad, the place is quite shabby and run down.

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences i ever had. The waitresses and the manager were rude, could not communicate the “ rules” of the restaurant beforehand, they made us feel very unwelcome, they were unfriendly and in general i wish i didnt come here. Bad vibes, not worth it, i don’t recommend.

The food is great. I expected the various dishes to be served as courses. However, everything came at once. The dishes were very good and interesting, and you were very full. However, the ambience might not be convincing. The lighting atmosphere and the hustle and bustle of the staff gave the impression of a canteen. The mood was relaxed and stressful. We didn't even stay an hour and wouldn't come back. The dishes were served carelessly and therefore lost some of their shame.

Top food, nice service, we will definitely be back

Visited with 2 other friends of mine. We had booked it in advance. Hospitality is incredible. We were greeted with warm welcome and we had been explained about the course on table. Food tasted delicious, and here comes my but… Food was good but we were paying 29 euros per person. So the food quantity on table did not make justice to whopping €87.00 though the quality was good. NOTE: later when we started reading the reviews, it was mentioned in the some reviews that it‘s UNLIMITED food when you opt for their menu than. However, if thats the case then we should have been informed about it while explaining about courses. During dinner, We had asked for extra Pita bread. And overall, some Pitas were soft and some were dry and not warm which made an impression being served stale bread. Yeah we finished every last bit on the plate. As we were three but yeah one pita bread per piece but hummus quantity same all for 2 people on other tables compared to ours felt little bit not justified.

The food was really very good! We had a table at 8pm. At 9 p.m. the chairs were put up at the empty tables around us and an employee mopped the floor while several tables were still eating. That doesn't work at all! We felt invited to leave. We wanted a gift voucher but we decided not to...

Delicious brunch; Large portions - be sure to come hungry.

We had ordered for two hours and were not rushed by anyone. I can't understand the bad reviews here. We found the evening menu very pleasant and tasty because we didn't have to decide anything. The service even noticed that a birthday was being celebrated and dessert was served with sparklers and a very personal congratulation. Yes, it's not cheap, but is it even that anymore? Everything is more expensive, everyone wants more money, but you can get food for an apple and an egg? We liked it and would recommend it to others.

Kanaan, aunque lo suficientemente sabroso y mostrándonos platos que no habíamos visto antes, simplemente (¿ya no?) merece los elogios. Very delicious. The concept is one price for the chef menu with unlimited refill as soon as you can finish your food. For the price paid very well done. Drinks are nice as well. I recommend to come here in group. But for two people it’s also nice.

Great food and wonderful service!

In today's world, a restaurant run by an Israeli and a Palestinian, promoting tolerance and acceptance between people. and welcoming of everyone is unique. Kanaan lived up to its promise of inclusivity and acceptance, coupling it with beautiful food in a comfortable environment. We were treated to nine tapas style courses plus an Israeli cheese plate, partnered with Israeli wine. The hummus was out of this world.

The food was good, but unfortunately nothing special. Arabic cuisine that we know and get more often in Berlin. It wasn't a menu that I thought consisted of several courses, but rather mezze that were all put on the table at the same time. In my opinion the price is overpriced, but at least you could order as much as you wanted and you were even offered food to take home. We became aware of the restaurant because it was touted as one of the best gluten-free restaurants in Berlin. Unfortunately there was no gluten-free bread and no other special gluten-free dishes.

Hier kann man problemlos einen wunderbaren Abend mit Freunden verbringen. Es gibt ein Menü, das regelmäßig wechselt und das man sich teilt. Unverträglichkeiten werden vorher abgefragt und dann wird darauf eingegangen. Das Essen ist super lecker, der Hummus der Beste, den ich je gegessen habe. Es gibt auch sehr guten Wein unter anderem aus Israel. Am Ende ist jeder satt und zufrieden. Das Dessert hat nur noch einer geschafft. Alle, die hier arbeiten sind sehr freundlich und entgegenkommend und die Atmosphäre ist locker und ungezwungen. Wir kommen bei unserem nächsten Besuch sehr gerne wieder hierher.

Third time I come. But I have tried 5. Two of them we couldn't have dinner because, although it says that the restaurant closes at 10 p.m., at 9 o'clock they no longer cook... Now they have a menu for 30 euros that... Low... Without further ado... The good thing is that I'm not going back :)

We had researched vegetarian restaurants before our trip to Berlin. This venue was highly recommended and we throughly enjoyed our visit. We booked a table in advance and we took a tram from the centre of Berlin and it was hen only a short walk from the tram stop to the restaurant. There were many people sitting around the pavements nearby eating food they had taken away from the restaurant.The food was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful when we were deciding what to order, guiding us regarding portion sizes suitable for the size of our party. Were we to visit Berlin again, we would not hesitate to return to the restaurant.

Lekker. Gewoon lekker. Wijn is goed. Muziek is goed. Bediening charmant. Publiek is minder hip dan je zou verwachten maar dat mag de pret niet drukken. Een plek om terug te komen.

My first visit to Kanaan left me sadly underwhelmed. The food wasn't bad, but there was nothing exciting or interesting that I hadn't sampled before or wouldn't be able to dish up myself after a visit to some better sorted supermarket or Turkish Deli. Basically a selection of cold Mezze followed by a good dessert. The hummus tasted good and was hopefully homemade. The added 'fake' chicken is readily available from 'The Vegetarian Butcher' Brand. Dolmades, Baba Ghanoush, lacklustre Tabbouleh, pickled cabbage. Where were the cooking skills? Judging from the size of the kitchen, probably not massively advanced. A word on the wine selection... I think they need to do better than selling a €7 Supermarket wine for a hefty markup. It's not that difficult to find some good wine dealer who can source extraordinary wines that one can't buy at Edeka. Kanaan as a Israeli-Palestinian joint venture is a great idea, but it could be so much better executed.

One of my favorite go to places in Berlin. At Kanaan you don’t only get great food and nice interior. Kanaan is a place of cross cultural and religious solidarity and love. The service might not always be perfect but the personnel is also friendly (which is not very common in Berlin). You might have to squeeze a bit to fit all the delicious food on the table and all your friends around the table, but the atmosphere and what this restaurant stands for definitely make up for it.

Unique place for some great mid-eastern cuisine in Berlin. An eclectic menu and matching decor on the walls. Food was amazing and hummus was definitely the best (since I make a variety of this dish, this was in particular, brilliant). We had the weekend meal and just bowled over by the sheer quantity. The coolers had some artificial flavour more like a concentrated concoction. Service was good and she did warn us for the portion sizes. The pictures of the founders are on the walls and appreciate their thought in putting this place together. Can get busy very soon. Reservation helps. Must do place for vegetarians.

Nice staff but long wait even though it wasn't busy. My “salad” consisted of a halved iceberg head and a few pomegranate seeds, which wasn’t worth the price.

A great restaurant with very good food. Great idea behind it.

I used to really love Kanaan, but the more I would go, the more I realized how poorly managed this place is. The menu forces you to order too much food. You can only order the brunch if two people order it together. Then if there are 4 people, then all 4 have to order the brunch or no-one can order the brunch. The brunch is huge, so unless you are starving or like to eat a lot, it is too much food. The entrees on the brunch cannot be ordered á la carte, so you if you don’t order the brunch you can’t have it and are stuck with a selection of appetizers. It is so upsetting to be force fed all this food. I don’t understand their logic. They want us to spend more money by making us order in excess, but honestly if they would just let us order what we want, we would probably spend just as much. It’s not like they can’t accommodate, they can, but they have some crazy owner on a power trip. On top of that, the food is inconsistent, tasting different each time, so it’s hard to rely on it being good from one day to the next. I’ve talked to the managers and staff several times about the menu and my frustration, but they refuse to do anything about it. It is not even the money, it’s about being wasteful and glutinous. Every time, we leave food untouched because we simply can’t eat all the items they bring us. Look at the menu yourself and you will see what I’m talking about. It is simply too much food! I will not be returning sadly, as it is nice to support a business that has a message of peace, but they have lost the plot, if they are proponents of waste.

The mood is very colorful. It is also a bit loud if you sit in the front area. But very nice atmosphere and attentive and quick staff. The food, we had the vegetarian menu four times, was also excellent the second time. The menu is a clear recommendation. There are really many different dishes. You can count on two hours for the three courses, and in the end the quantity was a bit too much for us. So it's best to come hungry. The concept of the store is great.

Delicious meal - 9 course dinner! A bit more expensive, but the food was so worth it. I was absolutely full, but still found room for dessert because it was as fantastic as the rest of the meal.

I wanted to like this place, but left disappointed. We had to wait 20 mins past our reservation time to be seated, then we were asked to move tables around 10 minutes after they seated us. The food was ok, some starter dishes really tasty and the bread was delicious. Throughout our meal the atmosphere was loud and weirdly tense. The staff were friendly, but seemed busy and overwhelmed. The prices are high, and didn’t match the overall experience.

Our favourite Berlin restaurant - unfortunately you did not live up to our expectations this time around. Tonight we went for the belly dancing show and set menu offer. Positives first: Very generous portions, be prepared for a big feast and lots of lovely flavours! Their lemonade is very fresh and delicious, definitely recommended as a refreshing aperitif. The belly dancer show was so energetic, excited that we finally got to see it! Great fun! Our prior experience, both at the old location and new, has been nothing but positive. Attentive staff, busy vibe and amazing food. However, there were some issues this time around that has made us wondering if this was our last visit. Our reserved slot was 18.00 to 20.00. We were welcomed and seated immediately upon arrival but then had to wait nearly 20 minutes before staff took drink orders. The starter wasn’t served until almost an hour after we arrived. To our knowledge at the time this left us possibly with only an hour to finish a 9 course meal. The dessert was served at about 20.00, so luckily it wasn’t as tight as feared. Yet again when we had finished our meal we also had to wait a long time at the bar to get to pay our bill. Unfortunately staff did not have time to pay much attention to our table during our stay. By the time we left staff had not taken a single drink-order from us, we had to make the request and generally it took some effort and waiting to communicate, as they were super busy running back and forth. Even presenting the menu and taking orders they appeared in a rush, talking very fast and «on the go». Starter: The seasoned bread was nice but dry. Some of the dishes that we expected to be served warm arrived cold at the table. Unsure if it was supposed to be like that, but the grilled cauliflower, falafel and roasted potatoes would have been nice served warm. The potatoes were somewhat chewy and falafel was not moist like before, unfortunately dry. The hummus was lovely, like before, however served with much added tahini now which camouflaged the hummus flavour and made it somewhat bland. Mains: By the time our mains arrived we were starting to feel full already. So great value for money, but quite overwhelming. Dessert: Coconunt pannacotta with pistachio crumble and a fruit sauce was lovely, but then again we were very, very full at this point. All in all we spent the majority of our visit waiting, and less time enjoying the food and taking the time to process and taste the lovely foods and flavours. Such a shame. The large portions are great if you have a big appetite and are a fast eater. We could’ve enjoyed half the size and therefore miss the opportunity of a la carte. The belly dancer was definitely a highlight, thank you for the entertaining show and spreading love! Edit: Would like to add that the staff was very friendly also this time. They were constantly running and probably did as best as they could given the number of staff available and dinner set-up, serving a full restaurant within a very short time frame.

Food is delicious as always but this place is a mess. I ordered food online one day before to be picked up at specific time waiting now 20min because they missed my order....

Unfortunately disappointed! Price performance for lunch is far too high. The hummus wasn't very creamy and the eggplant was rather dry. Condition very friendly and helpful.

1st visit: everything was great! Food was excellent, everything went quickly, despite being full. That's why we really wanted to come back. 2nd visit: poor. Had to wait a long time, staff was unmotivated or overwhelmed. Starters were very tasty, but unfortunately the egg in the Shakshuka was still raw… You have to be lucky who is there that day. But after the second visit I think it will take a while before we feel like it again :/

I'll start with the food: We were here for brunch and had a menu with an appetizer. The starters were very, very tasty and you were almost full from them alone. You could choose from 4 main courses, we had omelette and shakshuka. Unfortunately, the egg in the Shakshuka was still completely raw, but was put back in the oven. About the service: Because our order was taken relatively late, we only had our starter on the table after an hour. Then suddenly everything happened in quick succession with the main course following, even though we were still eating the starter. You had a bit of a feeling of being “eaten to breakfast”. All in all, the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed at times - but they were still friendly and accommodating. About the ambience: The ambience is always a bit of a matter of taste, but I noticed a bit of negative things here and there. At first glance, the restaurant itself is relatively chic, but simply furnished - almost a bit of a shabby look. The floor in the toilets and in the restaurant itself was relatively dirty, especially in the corners. In the toilets, the door to the washroom was also open and looked a bit shabby. All in all it was ok, but I didn't really feel comfortable. The atmosphere was a bit tense and when you pay that much money the overall package should be good.

Absolutely incredible food, the best roasted cauliflower of my life

So, we were at Kanaan on Saturday, 15th June for brunch. The food was excellent and the staff exceptional and so very warm and welcoming, especially the lovely lady who served us. Only who appeared to be the boss was…well, lets say that there’s room for improvement. Some words for consideration for the man in charge: you have a great restaurant and brilliant staff maybe start treating them with some respect. Nobody feels very good about themselves when you shout at your cooks and and interrupt your waiting staff while they are taking our order, especially when the restaurant is not that busy. It’s okay to feel important but putting that behaviour on display did nothing for you. I’m not telling you how to communicate but a good rule of thump is to treat and speak to others as you would like it done to yourself. I understand that as a boss you need to have authority but if everybody in your restaurant is wincing at how you treat the ones who hold everything together - you’re doing it wrong. I do hope you are reading this...maybe think about it and let your staff know how valuable they are...

The food is awesome, the waiters are, it's a safe and inclusive space too. Everything was perfect

I have no idea why there is such a hype about this restaurant. Is it a political statement to eat there? Minimal menu, quite expensive, tastes good so far.

The best vegetarian food I have ever tasted. Great service. Big portions (don't you worry, there is plenty of food). We got 9 dishes to share and it was perfect from the starters to the dessert. A must-visit when in Berlin.
