Kälberhalle in Augsburg

We were walking around Augsburg and happened to come across Kälberhalle. The interior is warm and inviting, and the staff is extremely friendly and professional. The portions are generous and high-quality, and the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant. Perfect for a dinner with friends.

Good, fast Bavarian cuisine, good value for money, you can always get a seat.

First time visiting. Tried the Swabian platter and roast pork. Unfortunately, even the half-price happy hour offers couldn't save it! Not only was everything lukewarm, but simply put, the food wasn't good. The sauces were watery and tasteless, and they used almost exclusively pre-made products. The drinks, on the other hand, were overpriced. The server was friendly.

Beautiful location. Service at a large event left much to be desired. A reservation was made, yet there were too few servers. Poor hospitality. Drinks were served in plastic cups.

A cozy Bavarian restaurant with traditional dishes and its own brewery. The location is charmingly integrated into the old slaughterhouse. Prices are reasonable and the service is very friendly. We'll try the happy hour specials in the early evening.

So... where to begin? I'll keep it short. At our large event, the waiter (who was responsible for our table) was truly the worst I've ever had to endure in my entire life. He came, saw, and left again. Without taking any orders. The ambiance was generally very nice. The food was good too. No complaints there. However, if you wanted drinks, you had to fight. The bar was unfortunately very poorly located right next to the dance floor, where hundreds of people were constantly standing in front of it. After seven successful battles, once you finally reached the front, you were either ignored or simply told that you couldn't order anything. Unfortunately, many of us left the event early because of this. The waiter should really look for a new job... something without people, serving, or talking... maybe as a sewer cleaner.

Despite meeting my idol Maximilian Alexander Kurt Stemmler a.k.a. "Trymacs," I have to say the evening event didn't go perfectly. Just to grab a quick beer, you had to wait in line for a whole HOUR. The bar was actually quite busy, but only one person was really working. At times, it seemed like people were just there for decoration. And then—this was the biggest outrage—after finally fighting our way to the bar after an hour, the bartender simply ignored us and wouldn't serve us. Awful! Many people left the event early because they wanted something to drink, and it simply wasn't possible. The duck was quite tasty, but unfortunately, it couldn't salvage the planning disaster. In short, we made the best of it, but I definitely wouldn't recommend this establishment for larger evening events.

The service was absolutely terrible. The staff was incredibly unfriendly… we were ignored several times when ordering drinks. The servers were rude, took forever, and were extremely impolite. Two servers stood idly by while another slowly "prepared" a bottle of water, while 100 guests waited to finally be served. All in all, the service ruined the evening and I absolutely cannot recommend it!!

We had a large work event with about 700 attendees in the calf barn. The food was okay, but nothing special. There weren't really any options for vegetarians or vegans. The ambiance was nice. However, the service was absolutely terrible, especially after dinner and when the bar opened. There was one bar for 700 guests with only five people behind it. It took me about 45 minutes from when I got in line until I had my drink. This wasn't just my experience; I heard the same from many other guests. And everyone behind the bar clearly didn't know how to work. One person forgot which orders they had taken, another took ages to make two gin and tonics. Most of the time, they were just moving crates and cups around. Sometimes three people were involved in making a single drink, and they weren't coordinated at all. The processes were completely disorganized. Everyone was just doing whatever they wanted. ``` ... Overall, the food and atmosphere were okay, but the service made it not recommendable at all.

Terrible service, disastrous organization. Drinks took forever, and then the glasses were only half full. Never again. I wouldn't recommend this place for company parties. Update: I looked at the last few reviews from last night. Two of them don't reflect what happened last night. The food shown in Marlene Bohn's review wasn't available. Neither were the plates. We had shabby, environmentally unfriendly plastic cups. Markus Sommer's review also doesn't reflect what happened last night. What a coincidence that these reviews appear at night. It's sad that people are suspected of cheating in their reviews instead of showing self-reflection, humility, and a willingness to apologize and improve.

Both at the bar and as a guest at a table, people waited for over an hour for drinks.

We love the Kälberhalle! The food, the atmosphere, and last but not least, the service. We really like the ambiance and enjoy being guests there. The menu offers something for everyone. The only thing I would "complain" about is the pumpkin cream soup...it was fantastic on Friday, but unfortunately very watered down the following Monday 🫣. Yes, I sent it back, but I wasn't charged for it. Overall, it's a great place for good food in a lovely location. We'd gladly come back again and again 👍

We arrived at the Kälberhalle (Calf Hall) at 11:30 after a funeral. Besides our group of about 30 people, there were roughly 10 other guests. Ordering drinks and food was quick. The drinks arrived promptly. My roast pork with crackling was a bit dry. The gravy had a film on it because it had already cooled down. The two small dumplings were lukewarm on the outside and almost cold on the inside. The plate itself was also cold. My friend had a pumpkin tarte flambée, which wasn't bad, but that plate was also cold, and so was the tarte flambée.

I love going to happy hour, it was incredibly delicious again and the value for money was top-notch, five stars for the kitchen 🥰

The Kälberhalle is a typical Bavarian restaurant. Here, in a very large hall, you can enjoy hearty German cuisine, accompanied by local beer, some of which is even brewed on-site. A visit here is definitely worthwhile; you'll leave very full and very happy.

Unfriendly staff, I was kicked out of the calf barn with friends, the reason given was a private party and the door was slammed shut.

It's unbelievable how inconsistent the quality is at this place. The food was good in the summer, but today it was awful. I ordered apple spritzer, but got juice diluted with water. The dumplings were in the water way too long and inedible, and the sauce and topping were cold. Guys, you need to step up your game! It's a shame about the place and the location; we won't be coming back for now.

I'm very disappointed again. I actually wanted to give the place another chance after the food was only "okay" last time. But today the food was simply inedible. It was cold, lukewarm at best. It had no flavor and was overcooked and mushy. That was the last time, never again. I've never eaten anything so bad.

The location is impressive. A modern and inviting pub atmosphere has been very successfully created while preserving the existing architecture of the former slaughterhouse. Unfortunately, that's the only major plus. The service was quick and friendly, but lacked ambition. The handling of complaints, however, was good, as we had ordered three pork knuckles at our table, none of which were particularly tasty. All lacked a crispy crust, weren't very tender, and had an unpleasantly strong pork flavor; one knuckle wasn't cooked through. We mentioned this, and were immediately offered compensation: dessert, coffee, and a schnapps. We opted for the Kaiserschmarrn, which was delicious. The fish we ordered was initially delivered to the next table, and when the woman returned from the restroom and stated that she hadn't ordered fish, the server simply brought the plate to us. A non-alcoholic shandy can only be ordered in a 1-liter glass because the non-alcoholic beer comes in bottles, not on tap. I can understand this approach more easily in smaller restaurants, but not in a brewery's brewhouse pub with around 200-250 seats. Surely, an opened bottle of non-alcoholic beer should be finished in the evening or simply offered as a non-alcoholic alternative, even if half a bottle remains. All in all, we unfortunately cannot recommend the Kälberhalle for a regular restaurant visit, as beautiful as it is. I can very well imagine it being perfect for an Oktoberfest event; the atmosphere would certainly be lively.

A lovely, traditional atmosphere with Bavarian roots. If you're in the mood for hearty Bavarian food, this is the place for you. We had a burger, goulash with homemade bread dumplings, and a traditional Wiener Schnitzel. Everything was absolutely delicious. It was prepared with great care and was truly homemade. The service was attentive, friendly, and always readily available. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Good German cuisine; I had roast pork with dumplings and red cabbage for the special offer price (around €10), it was delicious. We liked the atmosphere.

The food was unfortunately simple and tasteless. No seasoning at all, and every dish had the same sauce. It was okay for the happy hour price, but the regular price for this quality is unjustified. The waiter didn't even ask if we enjoyed the food. This was our last time there.

When we reserved a table, we weren't told that the menu was very limited. At first, the waitress refused to bring a menu, and then it took a very long time to take our order. And we had to call two or three times to pay.

A great restaurant in the historic calf hall in Augsburg's slaughterhouse district. The food is reasonably priced, and the portions are filling. The taste is more than adequate for the prices. The understaffed service was quite overwhelmed, and it took quite a while for drinks to arrive or for the food to finally arrive at the table. But I would still go back for dinner anytime.

Unfortunately, I was greeted in an unfriendly manner by the waitress... she asked me snippy whether I knew what I wanted... it goes without saying that you shouldn't tip someone like that... but the waitress should have remained friendly... she couldn't even say thank you... that's not good at all... and I knew exactly what she was like... probably from the Eastern Bloc... a real shame because the location would have been great.

Well, I know a beef rib with onions as thick, but this one was flat and so full of gristle that I couldn't eat half of it. The taste was okay. 30 euros for that... well, the cherry gois was good.

A pub brewery located in a former slaughterhouse in Augsburg, serving Hasen beer on tap and brewery-style dishes. When the weather is nice, you can sit in the beer garden outside the pub. The service was prompt and friendly. We'd gladly return.

The food here is excellent, and the dining environment is very good. I thought it would be expensive for such a great restaurant, but I was surprised that there was a happy hour, with main courses and side dishes half price. Even if the full price was very reasonable, you could get half price. So in all cases, I can give this restaurant a full score. The waiters here are very friendly and the food is served very quickly. You don't need to make a reservation.

I was invited to a business event. The atmosphere was fantastic, the buffet was delicious, and the staff was friendly, even though the place was packed. Fantastic!

Unfortunately, the quality of the food has declined significantly. It's just warmed-up convenience foods. The Kaiserschmarren is abysmal.

The ambiance is truly wonderful, which makes me even more sad about what's being done with it. Aside from the fact that my companion's meal was served faster than our drinks, I had to wait 30 minutes for my own dish. I prefer eating together. The service is completely apathetic, no apology, not even a "Bon appétit" or a question about whether everything was okay. In my opinion, the waiters are completely overwhelmed and can't even cope with a light crowd. In the end, you'd be lucky if you were allowed to pay after asking several times. The cleanliness also leaves a lot to be desired. Many tables weren't wiped, and no napkins or cutlery (the few that were there were dirty) were replenished. No salt, no pepper. Our table was still decorated with dried-on food scraps (see picture). Truly unappetizing! We served ourselves at another table where there were still some cutlery and napkins left. Even tapping beer is apparently a work of art in a brewery that hasn't been mastered. The beer arrived significantly below the fill level! While I waited in vain for my food, I observed how the beer is poured there. I didn't know that beer is poured from one glass to another because you can't handle a tap and its foaming. Before the beer reached the customer, it stood for a while, so the foam was gone, and the beer tasted like a glaze from the pouring back and forth. It's truly sad to have to experience something like that in a brewery. When my food finally arrived, which I was then able to "enjoy" on my own, I realized that it was unfortunately just store-bought ready-made products. The hopeful wait was definitely not worth it. It's a real shame what they've done to such a great location. We definitely won't be coming back and wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone!

The cheese dumplings were completely soggy and barely edible. The roast pork had a strange taste. Several tables also reported this... The salad was out of bread. No alternative was offered. The waiters showed no interest either. Unfortunately, it's always a disappointment.

Wow, that was the worst experience in a restaurant. The blonde waitress was so incredibly rude and incompetent, I've rarely experienced anything like that. They completely forgot about it, and then the starter and main course came to the table together, even though we'd been told beforehand... Without any apology, nothing, they just dumped it there... Everything took forever, and when we asked for cutlery, it took even longer, and the food got cold. Thank you - never to see you again.

The food was very tasty, but the portions (goulash, creamed mushrooms, creamed chanterelles with bread dumplings) were a bit small. The wait between drinks and ordering food was very long. In some cases, drinks were reordered before we could order food (upon request). Service was very friendly. It was very quiet.

The Haxengrill is a must-order, along with the other two dishes: the half roast duck and the Bavarian roast pork. The pork skin is truly crispy, and the roast duck is delicious. The sauce and red cabbage complement the dish perfectly.

Great place, best kasespazele of my life and fresh beer. It is severely understaffed and waited 25 mins to get our order in and 43 mins just to pay and go. The staff are very hard working but not enough for such a place

Absolutely amazing old building and great atmosphere, just as absolutely abysmal speed of service, we’ve been waiting 20 minutes for 3 beers and 20 minutes to pay. I haven’t tried any food, but the beer is pretty average for 5.20 € a glass, there are a lot of places in Augsburg you can get much much better beer. As a plus, you can buy bottles of beer ok Sunday.

Checks the boxes, service is at the speed you’d expect, food decent but not write it up and tell all of your friends worthy. I’d return.

Worst large event I've ever experienced. Our graduating class wanted to celebrate their graduation with about 350 people. When the five of us arrived with our pre-purchased tickets, there were no tables available for us. The completely overwhelmed manager then wanted to seat us separately at separate tables with other families, so everyone would have been sitting alone. The service and customer focus were zero. Professionalism is paramount!

I only had two beers, so I don't have an opinion on the food. It reminded me of the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, a huge hall where you can sip beer. And there's nothing wrong with that, especially when the beer is brewed right in the back. But for a romantic evening with my wife, I'd go somewhere else.

Despite planning weeks in advance, there wasn't enough food available. On top of that, there were outrageous wait times. We highly recommend refusing to plan anything here with a large group.

Today's visit was a real disappointment. It took a quarter of an hour for the first server to come to the table. It took another half hour for the food to arrive. The pork fillet was extremely tough. Can a fillet even be that tough? Visually, it's also easy to suspect that it wasn't a fillet but rather pieces of a chop. The homemade lemonade – usually very good – was completely watery. Unfortunately, the – incidentally very unfriendly – server didn't ask if everything was okay after taking the checkout. So here's the feedback. On previous visits, I noticed that the soap dispenser in the accessible restroom was empty. I reported it several times. But today, again, there was no soap in it. The paper towels are on a shelf: too high for a wheelchair user to reach. Can you use toilet paper as an alternative? Unfortunately, the holder is located in a place that would be difficult for most people with disabilities to reach. The women's restroom had a sticky floor. Even though the calf hall is a beautiful location, our visit there was unfortunately totally unpleasant.

Visited as part of a very large, but registered tour group. The food was pre-ordered and could have been prepared by the kitchen in a timely manner. The tour group arrived on time. The food was served promptly, but completely uncoordinated. Regarding the dish: the side salad was rather randomly distributed on the plate. Ready-made dressing, anything but a taste highlight. Main course: pollock with potato salad. Another guest aptly put it: it looked like a hospital meal. A dollop of potato salad, a piece of pollock, a dollop of remoulade, a partially cooked cocktail tomato. The breading was soft and mushy, the potato salad was okay. Everything lay lost on the plate, just like you'd expect from a hospital, for example. No lemon (a must with fish). Overall, anything but a good, beautiful dish. It wouldn't have been far to go. But you can also simply make it unloving and sad. What a shame. About the drinks. The location is impressive, including the brewery. But: a stack of Hasenbräu plastic cups at the table. The drink comes in a bottle. Pouring into the plastic cup is the guest's responsibility. And all this in the middle of the brewery! You might think the brewmaster would care about a decent glass. Either that's not the case, or the brewmaster has no say. Then the price of the beer: a half-liter of Hasenbräu Hell costs 5.20. Without a glass, without being poured. And: without a long transport: the brewing tanks are within sight in the hall. Outside the venue, the same bottle of Helles costs 4.50 at the beach bar... Finally, it should be mentioned that in the Kälberhalle, someone was only available to order drinks once, and then not again for two hours. It's a shame for this "lesser" dining experience – given the location and the fact that the admittedly large tour group had been extensively advertised, it was a clear disappointment.

The food is good. The staff is friendly. The restrooms smell strongly of old urine, and old dirt is visible to the naked eye. Despite low customer numbers, there are long waits for drinks.

I (a senior citizen) went for lunch yesterday (Sunday). Conclusion: NEVER AGAIN!!! 1. Reason: Half a beer: €5.20 (a bargain price) 2. Wiener Schnitzel: Poor meat quality 3. No senior citizen prices 4. Despite the perfect weather, there were barely 50 people in the beer garden at lunchtime 5. Long wait times (logical with only one server!)

I've been a regular customer for about 10 years. Some years I was there almost weekly, others rarely. At the Kälberhalle, you'll find the most architecturally beautiful brewery ambiance in Augsburg and the best home-brewed Kellerbier in the region. Certain dishes are very good (e.g., Brauhaus Cordon Bleu or Bayernreindl), while others depend on the chef's mood that day (e.g., Käsespätzle). Unfortunately, the service had declined considerably in recent years, but yesterday I was pleasantly surprised by a new, extremely motivated and friendly waiter named Cengiz. I haven't received such good service at the Kälberhalle in years.

The food and drinks are very good, and the waitress is super nice and always has a good joke. I'll be back.

Bavarian flair in a brewery hall. The atmosphere is softened by wooden partitions between the rows of tables, creating an interesting mix of pub and beer tent. Friendly service. Prices are reasonable and affordable. Parking is available in front of the restaurant.

To your relief, it was the last day of the Bundesliga season and it was busy. Now here's the thing: 1. You should only accept as many reservations as your service can handle, not the number of seats the brewery has available. You were hopefully overwhelmed that day. 2. At 7 p.m., there were no more knuckle of pork left. Okay, it can happen, but it's not nice. The next order was also sold out, which is starting to get embarrassing (you don't have that much food). 3. At a table with 5 people, 4 meals arrived, and the 5th meal was missing. This meal still wasn't there after 1.5 hours and multiple attempts to speak to 3 servers, and we then left it because the kitchen and servers obviously couldn't agree on who was at fault and how to resolve it. 4. This simply shouldn't happen, and if it does happen, I expect more than an apology. A drink or a piece of cake on the house or something similar would be the most normal thing in the world. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The atmosphere is good, but the staff is clearly not professional (friendly, but incapable of running the business properly). The food is okay, but nothing more. I wouldn't go there again. There are far better places to eat in Augsburg.

My wife waited almost 50 minutes for her soup, but they apologized and offered a shot of schnapps on the house at the end. The beer tasted excellent and was served at the perfect temperature. The sausage salad was too expensive for the amount. The staff was friendly but overwhelmed.

The brewery's pumps were incredibly loud at 8 p.m., pumping and hissing so loudly that you could barely hold a conversation for 25 minutes. We waited 45 minutes for our food.

Unfortunately, I can't give any stars, perhaps because of the service staff, who were outnumbered by such a large number of guests. We registered with around 250 guests. In advance, we were promised the entire menu. Upon arrival, we were immediately shocked: the menu was reduced by at least two-thirds. Then, after four orders, one dish was no longer available, even though we had announced 250 people. Then, in some cases, we waited for an hour for the food. It went on like this the whole time. Some people didn't get anything because of the food. The food itself wasn't good. Canned mushrooms. Who wants that for that price? I definitely can't recommend the place. A solid five and no stars.

The beer is good, there is ice cream and coffee, the waiters are very nice, and the place is big enough.

Absolutely overwhelmed when you arrive with 200-300 people! We had reservations. The waitresses were the most pitiful. I would have taken off my apron and gone home. As a restaurateur, you simply have to put in more effort these days!!! The only thing that was halfway decent was the beer.
