With a wine tour looming on the horizon and our stomachs rumbling after a morning of Schnoor's winding alleys, we ducked into Jon Benton's on the bustling main square—Bremen's iconic Marktplatz, where the glockenspiel chimes, the Rathaus looms like a fairy-tale sentinel, and don't forget the Robbers of Bremen (those cheeky Town Musicians statue crew) are just a stone's throw away, frozen mid-adventure for your selfie delight. It was meant to be a quick bite, but this cozy corner spot turned it into a delightful detour that had us lingering over every flavorful forkful. I surrendered to the fried camembert—oh, what a gooey revelation! Crispy golden exterior giving way to molten, oozy perfection inside, all brightened by a tart-sweet cranberry sauce that cut through the richness like a northern German zinger. Paired with a crisp side salad of fresh greens and a light vinaigrette, it was the ideal light-yet-indulgent prelude to vino adventures—elegant, unexpected, and utterly moreish. My husband, ever the adventurer, tackled the Knipp—a hearty mash-up of questionable origins (somewhere between sausage and oatmeal, with a backstory as murky as the Weser at dusk)—but one skeptical bite in, and he was sold. Rich, savory, and surprisingly nuanced with smoked meats and potatoes bound in a comforting spice blend, it delivered big on taste without the heaviness. Washed down with local brews that hit just right, it fueled him for the vineyards ahead. Tucked right on the square, Jon Benton's captures that Bremen buzz—tables spilling onto the cobblestones for prime people-watching amid the market's medieval magic—without a whiff of tourist trap pretension. Service was swift and smiling, plates arrived piping hot, and the vibe? Pure, unpretentious joy. If you're square-hopping in Bremen before a tour (or just because), swing by for this hidden hug of flavors. It was our fortuitous find, and we'll be back to unravel more of that Knipp mystery. I had the fillet steak with mashed potatoes and herb baguette, and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. I didn't need any seasoning, and it was very fresh, delicious, and melted in your mouth. Today's female server was very polite and accommodating. I felt welcome.

Mehmet is a very friendly waiter with a positive attitude. The food was delicious and plentiful.

I went to John Benton with my family and as a couple. I think the restaurant is very good for a "tourist"/"grand place" restaurant, which are generally not very good in terms of cuisine. I find the prices fair for the setting offered, a very beautiful view of the grand place when you are on the terrace. The staff is very friendly and I was always well received; we were welcomed even when it was late. There are vegetarian options, quite well prepared which is good to note, personally I ate delicious beetroot falafels! I therefore recommend this address when you want to eat a good meal, typical or less typical, while enjoying a beautiful view!

The food was quite good, as were the cocktails; the service left a lot to be desired (motivation? Orders couldn't be placed for a long time, even though half the seats were occupied and there were obviously enough staff).

We came to Bremen for one night and we didn't know what to eat. Then we asked a kid and he told me to go to John Benton Steakhouse. We went and ate their burger and fries. It was beyond perfect. The meat was perfect and the fries were very crispy and cooked perfectly. I would like to thank John Benton Restaurant for all their services. The Bremen kitchen is not able to provide its guests with John Benton's dishes, and the restaurant spoiled its guests with burgers and pies. The court must be busy preparing food and drinks. The John Benton restaurant has made it its mission.

We stopped by Bremen on our way home from our North Sea vacation. We were looking for a nice lunch spot. We found it here. They were fully accommodating to our child, and what we were more than pleasantly surprised to see was their focus on sustainability. Because my wife was hungry at lunch (the breakfast was small), they wanted to order dessert at the same time. They advised us against this and offered to order it after the main course. This was a great tip, as we were absolutely stuffed after the main course. We would gladly return.

Quick stop for soup. We had onion soup, carrot soup and some indefinable soup. All were ok. Standard yummy.

Good German food experience at in a perfect atmosphere by the Bremen historically square. Friendly service and tasty food. Be warned of the 5 min long church bell before noon! 😆

We only had a drink here, but it's well located and the service is good.

The location is great. It’s right near City Hall so either if you sit inside or outside near window, you can see the historical buildings the waitress we had. TISCH not sure if that’s correct name but she was a lovely young lady who really helped with her English for us. The menu was in English, but I still had questions. I had the salmon that was in Filo dough with a watermelon and feta salad, which was very light and good. I also had a baked potato. We also had tagliatelle and small Caesar salad. Everything was good.

Unfortunately, the prices have gone up since our last visit six years ago. The restaurant has been remodeled, but we like the first floor even better, with its view of the market square, Roland, and the town hall. We had a delicious meal and were delighted by the friendly service. We'll be back.

I was a repeat offender 😎. The restaurant is practically right next to the Bremen Town Musicians. Surrounded by historic buildings. The service was always very friendly, and the food was always fresh and delicious 🤤 🙂. I highly recommend this restaurant. If I'm ever in Bremen again, I'd love to eat there again.

The John Benton, a steak restaurant in Bremen that has been established for decades, has been shining in new splendor since 2024. A bright, friendly ambience spread over two levels in a prime location overlooking the market square. We went for dinner with friends on Saturday. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant was very busy. The food is excellent. We had fillet steak with fries, herb baguette, salad, and mushrooms. The fillet was grilled to perfection and tender, and the fries were crispy and crunchy. Simply delicious. Our friends had asparagus and were also delighted. For dessert, the four of us shared a large Kaiserschmarrn (smothered pancake with pancakes), which came with vanilla sauce, cranberries, and apple sauce and was delicious. It has nothing to fear from any Austrian original. The service was extremely attentive, very friendly, and quick, even though the restaurant was very busy. That's what makes eating out fun.

The asparagus tasted excellent as always. We'd love to come back.

We were very lucky to be able to get seats for 20 people at short notice on Saturday evening and were served courteously and quickly. Food, drinks and service were excellent. Thank you for the lovely evening.

Regarding the outdoor area: really great atmosphere, lively, often with accompanying street music. The service is quick and attentive, but also not the warmth in person. The coffee drinks were underwhelming.

Unexpectedly great place! Usually, the restaurants on the market square are tourist traps with overpriced mediocre food and bad service. But this one had magnificent steaks with asparagus and boiled potatoes, served very quickly by a very nice waiter! And all that with a wonderful view at Bremen Market square. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but it was worth it. So gladly recommend.

What a wonderful place to enjoy a little break from everyday life! The food was super delicious – fresh, prepared with love and tasted to the point. The drinks also went perfectly with it and were served with a smile. The outdoor area is particularly beautiful. When the weather is good, you can sit here really nicely, enjoy the atmosphere and just switch off. The waitresses were consistently friendly, attentive and in a good mood – exactly as you would expect. A place to feel good, enjoy and definitely come back. Clear recommendation!

Ordered 2x 250g fillet today, 2x baked potatoes and 2x small. Cola with 3 x extra herb baguettes for around €112 was not worth the meat. The fillet was too fatty and not tender and had an aftertaste. Was really disappointed. The service was very nice.

Concert in the Glocke and start the evening with a great meal. The ambience is great, The view of the town hall and cathedral is priceless, The food was very good! The service was friendly, quick and attentive.

Top restaurant cuisine very good right in Bremen city center with a view of the town hall and Bremen citizens

A decent environment in the very center of Bremen. They have Turkish employees. The service delivery is quite nice. I ate turkey schnitzel. It was delicious. It is located very close to the Bremen Town Musicians monument and the Bremen Cathedral.

Today, on February 2nd, 2025, we spontaneously came to this restaurant in a group of 5 people and it certainly won't be the last time! Our service was great, totally charming and on the ball! What you want when you eat out. The ambience is also great! Following a recommendation, I tried the pan fish, but the taste was great, but the fried potatoes could have used a little more color.

Very good location on the Bremen market square. The service tried hard, but overlooked many guests and was a bit overwhelmed despite the few guests. The drinks were delicious, there was a large selection of wines and draft beers. Unfortunately the food wasn't good at all and very tasteless. I had an onion soup, which unfortunately tasted like a very watered down packet soup. When I returned the uneaten soup, the service asked if it wasn't tasty. I said yes and explained the reason. There was no excuse, it was just accepted. We paid around €35 ​​for soup, apple strudel, cappuccino and two beers. Far too expensive for the quality and service, but the location is worth it. We won't come again.

We had dinner with 7 people last night. Everything tasted great. I had Knipp with two long black hairs. I showed these to the waitress when I was clearing away the items. Reaction was 0. No apology, nothing. We don't think it's possible at all that there won't be a reaction here. I didn't make a big deal about it. But I was expecting a reaction from the kitchen. Apparently people assume that only tourists eat here and not people from Bremen. Then you don't have to react. Bon appetit

Wir hatten einen super Platz am Fenster mit Blick auf den schönen Marktplatz. Tolle Einrichtung! Nun zum Essen, es war einfach mega. Die Steaks, die Bratkartoffeln sind absolut zu empfehlen. Man zahlt ein bisschen mehr, aber für die Qualität und die Lage absolut angemessen. Wir kommen wieder :)

We were there spontaneously and got a place even without a reservation. The service is top, very friendly and attentive. Who had hamburgers 🍔 they were very tasty, the fries 🍟 were great. The ambience is stylish and at the same time pleasant. When we're in Bremen again, we'll stop by again. I wish you continued success and a visit in 2025.

Very nicely decorated restaurant in Becks am Markt. Friendly service. The tagliatelle could have used five minutes less cooking time. The Black Tiger prawns, however, were very well fried. Ambiance is great. Overall a recommendation.

Highly recommended restaurant. We were seated straight away without making a table reservation, the service was extremely friendly and the entire restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere. Our wish to only get a portion of barbie breast (as it was very large) including a robber plate was not only granted, but this one portion was served very appetizingly on two plates. Eight of us recently went to John Benton's in Bremen, in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the Christmas market - with four small children with us. What can I say? It was just perfect! We were immediately seated upstairs and the service was amazing: friendly, attentive and, above all, smart. What particularly impressed us was that the children received their food very quickly, which made them happy and relaxed. The waitress really thought through things and was on their toes the whole time. Everything went smoothly and we felt completely comfortable. The food was absolutely great – a treat for everyone! We'll definitely be back. Thanks to the John Benton team for this great experience!

In addition to my review from 2 years ago, I can say that the restaurant has become even better. It's certainly due to the renovation, the new owner and the very attentive and nice staff. The food was excellent, we will definitely be back.

After our visit to the Bremen Christmas market, we reserved a table at John Benton (almost a tradition). During the Christmas season, a table reservation is mandatory as the restaurant is very busy. It is modern and warmly furnished. We were greeted warmly and quickly shown to our table. This time we got a table for 4 by the window and were able to look at the festively decorated Christmas market. We had a very friendly and committed waitress who looked after us very attentively. The food quickly arrived at our table one by one; We asked for a short break for the main course, which was graciously accepted. All dishes were tasteful and freshly prepared; there was nothing to complain about. Despite the somewhat loud background noise, we felt very comfortable. It was another very pleasant and beautiful evening. If we are in Bremen again, we would love to come back!

Unfortunately, we found out too late that a 10% tip was brazenly added to the bill without mentioning it and without asking. And then didn't say anything about it when you gave a €5 tip in cash. Anyone who wants to be ripped off is welcome. Once and never again!

Very tasteful and cozy restaurant on the Market Square in Bremen with a view of the fantastic town hall and the church. There is a very spacious restaurant on the 1st floor where you were quickly helped by a nice waitress. The food, a John Benton Burger and a rump steak, were very tasty and the accompanying fries were very tasty. The restaurant is not very cheap, but the very tasty food makes up for it! There is a limited dessert menu, but the quality is also very good. Highly recommended!

If this place is related to the John Benton’s Becks Haus that looks at the church- I had a terrible experience there. We sat there to get a couple of drinks and a bite to eat. My phone was about to be dead, so I asked the bar tender whether I can charge it, and he nicely put my phone to charge with my own charger. by the time I went back inside to ask fpr the bill to the table and get my phone- one guy- Daniel- told me that it is not a charger station and I should take my phone. I was there to pick it up anyways so I did not say anything but then I saw that it was previously unplugged- so not charged at all. I told him that I was going to lok at the trains and asked whether I can leave it there a bit more- plugged. He repeated that it was not a charging station, and I said that it does not take a lot to be helpful. He unplugged my phone and told me to leave. We paid and left- although I was furious. But in the meantime there were some football holigans who had too much too drink and one of them mooned the street. The “owner” Daniel- who did not budge while all this was happenned was very disturbed to use his electric plug.. I am not leaving w/out a power bank again- but the way that Daniel held himself should be questioned.. I cannot describe how terrible he is to the waiting staff either-so do sth about him if you can.

Excellent food and great atmosphere! I tried the fillet steak with baked potato and it was cooked perfectly - buttery tender and cooked to perfection. I particularly liked the combination with the creamy potato. As an additional treat, I had a zander fillet that was wonderfully crispy and juicy at the same time. I was also impressed by the turkey specialties, they were tender and aromatic. The atmosphere at John Benton is cozy and the service is attentive. I can recommend it to anyone looking for excellent meat and fish dishes in Bremen.

Der Laden lebt von seiner guten Lage direkt am Roland und dem alten Rathaus. Hier kann man gut sitzen und das alte Bremen genießen. Wir hatten nur Drinks, können also zum Essen nichts sagen. Die Drinks waren logischerweise wie immer, lediglich etwas teuer. Bei der Lage aber normal. Der Service war aber sehr freundlich und auf Spur.

Went to John Benton with customers yesterday because the menu looked better than the traditional Beck's on the market. The ambience, especially on the first floor, is nice, with a great view of the cathedral. The service was fine. Only my food and that of my one guest wasn't really great. Canned champions, hash browns out of the packet and powder in the sauce are simply no longer up to date if one is to speak of good cuisine. My customer's steak was not medium, but rather overdone, otherwise the taste was ok. But he was also a little confused about the packet of hash browns. There is probably less emphasis on quality here since there are mostly tourists on site?! It's a shame because the restaurant definitely deserved more. As a Bremer, I can't make a recommendation because for me the food is very important, regardless of the view.

Wir waren ein paar Tage in Bremen und haben dreimal hier gegessen und die Zeit genossen. Das Lokal ist an einer super Lage. Das Personal sehr aufmerksam und freundlich. Beim zweiten Besuch hat und die eine Mitarbeiterin bereits gekannt. Das Essen ist sehr lecker. Sonderwünsche konnten wir anbringen und bekamen es auch. Würden jederzeit wieder hier Essen.

Great visit on August 17th. at John Benton! Super friendly staff and the food was very tasty. The fried potatoes were to die for! The steak was good too, a few more side dishes would have been nice. Fairly priced. Nice outdoor area and clean toilets. We'll come back when we're in Bremen! I can only recommend John Benton.

Stopped off here after an enjoyable walk around the old town. You can't beat Currywurst washed down by a Becks beer . Great spot in the centre of town. Service very good. A great place for a drink and something to eat.

Well, new menu with a mediocre burger, drinks came when we had already had the food and an Aperol that didn't deserve the name. It's a shame, we always enjoyed being there. Magnificent view of the market square, town hall and cathedral.

My experience was really bad and disappointing. First of all we were seated with little courtesy and very hastily. Afterwards, the waitress made many mistakes with our simple order and addressed us with a rude and inappropriate tone. When 2 of the 3 dishes we ordered arrived because the kitchen had made another mistake, we went to complain about it. We were given a small, empty plate and were rudely told to share one of the portions ourselves. The waitress addressed us with inappropriate words and did not try to help us in any way even after making this mistake. It's a tourist trap with very high prices and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Ordered Matjes Hausfrauenart on JULY 20th for 16.50. I like to eat herring often. Both matjes were cut, tried and left over - absolutely disappointing. The waitress offers coffee to compensate. I gave up.

Very friendly staff - but the price/performance ratio for my burger doesn't match. The taste is ok - but the portion is a joke for 23.50. Burger felt like a double cheeseburger size, counted fries and €1 extra for mayo. This is better for the price.

Wir waren zum Mittagessen hier. Die Mitarbeitenden waren sehr freundlich und das Essen kam schnell. Leider war einiges von den Speisen, die wir bestellt hatten TK- oder Fertig-Ware und der Beilagensalat hatte schon einige braune Stellen, obwohl wir sehr früh (gegen 11.45 Uhr) dort waren. Die Preise waren dafür doch recht saftig - man zahlt hier leider hauptsächlich für die Lage und nicht die Qualität.

Danny is the best waiter in Germany, he made our group's evening better!! This man needs a raise. Almost 30 men were provided with drinks without any problems. In terms of price, it is of course a little more expensive due to the location. I can't judge food. But the atmosphere is very classy and modern.

Recently I visited the John Benton Restaurant, located in the heart of the beautiful tourist city of Bremen. The location of the restaurant is ideal for a stop and a break during a walk through the historic center. The waiter greeted us warmly, brought the menu and quickly took our order. I decided to try fried potatoes with bacon and two eggs. However, when the dish was served, I was disappointed. It turned out the bacon was missing. Even though it was in the menu name. It was a little disappointing as I expected that the composition of the dish would be fully adhered to as stated in the menu. Furthermore, I found it strange that we weren't offered a baguette or at least a roll. This is standard practice in many restaurants. The John Benton Restaurant left mixed feelings. I expected more from this restaurant, especially given its wonderful location.

John Benton offers very good cuisine in a more modern style, served by exceptionally good service.

It was pleasant to sit here with a beer and watch the goings-on, but I can't recommend eating anything: there was no card with the allergens ("they were all sent back because of a mistake") and the food - 'specialty' grilled skewer - was not to be enjoyed: burnt vegetables with a skewer with three small pieces of meat and a baked potato buried under two clearly far too much (bags?) of sauce (with who knows how many additives) - very salty but OK...

Nice place but the service is terrible! There is not good communication, which means you get the wrong order on the table. Then they are very rude if you want to address this misunderstanding!!!

We sat down with a large group on the busy terrace, nothing wrong with it taking a long time because it is busy. When she took our order we asked for 3 weisse, of which she asked “large or small?”. we wanted 3 large ones. An ice coffee was also ordered. Then our drinks are served. the Wiesse is a small class of berlin kindl weisse. Not the beer we wanted, but fine, tastes good. the iced coffee became a latte maciato to which we reacted confusedly. the waiter quickly became irritated and said that she repeated twice whether we wanted a latte, and that we would have said yes. She said she couldn't take this error off the bill. Pity

Een terras op de fantastische markt in Bremen waar men geen uitzonderlijke maar toch meer dan behoorlijke gerechten serveert voor een prijs die verantwoord is. De bediening is erg vriendelijk.

The new restaurant at Domshof! The new style has blended in well with the old building. Drinks came quickly and the food was good. I wanted to sit outside in great weather. We had to wait a bit. But what do you expect was. Clean toilets, glasses were polished. Happy to come back!

Dejligt sted med plads uden for i solen. Vi ville have lidt let frokost og noget for tørsten. En Ceasar salat og en løgsuppe. Velsmagende og dejlig mad. Serveringen damerne var meget sæde og hurtige til at betjene os og maden kom hurtigt selvom der var fyldt op med gæster ved alle bordene.

My husband and I sat down in the restaurant on Easter Sunday to have something to eat. My husband wasn't hungry. After dinner we ordered a Fanta and a Cola without looking at the menu!!! But we would have preferred to do that! Then came the bill!! Then we turned to the food 4.60 euros per drink charged!!! This is usury!!!!! You are being ripped off here!

Wir sind regelmäßige Gäste bei Becks Bistro gewesen. Leider hat sich die Speisekarte zum schlechterem geändert und außerdem muss man viel Zeit mitnehmen. Schade!
