Jays Essen in Essen

The waitresses are very nice, and the food is truly delicious. However, we were shocked when we saw the size of the portions. They're disproportionate to the price. We were last there about a year ago, and the portions were much larger and cheaper, too. What a shame!

Unfortunately, the portions are getting smaller and smaller. The new menu is very good, but you won't get full from the toekbokki... you can count the rice cakes.

Beautiful little Asian. Unusual selection

Very good food, well prepared and cost-benefit is good. No menus in English, so be prepared with your translator. Servers speak English. Restaurant has no air conditioning, which makes it very uncomfortable during the summer for patrons and employees. It used to open for lunch and was always busy during weekends. Now, sadly, it only opens for dinner. At least, during weekends, management should revisit this. Holidays, they always close. So, it's a Korean family imbiss, good food a d friendly staff.

Very, very delicious, authentic food. I had kimchi jeon and jjajang japchae with seaweed rolls. Both were very tasty. However, the portion size of the noodles was not appropriate for €16, and I don't think the mini seaweed roll, which costs €2.50 extra, was worth the price (see picture). Unfortunately, the portion sizes at the neighboring tables were also smaller than usual, while at the same time, the prices had increased. In principle, I understand price increases, but more expensive and at the same time significantly smaller portions, hmm. Service was fast and friendly as always. Despite the increased prices, I'd happily come back because of the very good food. But perhaps the portions could be a bit larger again :)

The food tastes very good and is relatively authentic. Unfortunately, portion sizes have decreased significantly, while prices have increased. I particularly like one dish, and I used to barely be able to finish it because the portions were so large. Now I can easily finish it, and there's still room. The quality of the food, however, is very good.

It was okay. I was hoping for larger portions and would have liked the decor to be nicer. Unfortunately, the food was rather mediocre. The staff was very friendly.

Kimchi stew was extremely delicious

Never had Korean food so delicious!! The employees were very, very nice and you also got a delicious starter. But the main course took it up a notch. I've never had such delicious pasta with chicken!!! Just great, great atmosphere and great food, what more could you want?! I can only recommend it 1000%!!!

This was our first introduction to Korean food and we liked it. My husband really liked the chicken and I liked the tofu with glass noodles

I like the food very much. Portion size to fill you up. Waitress slightly overwhelmed, but still nice. The greeting from the kitchen became smaller and smaller over the years, but now it was completely missing.

Great Korean eatery. Nice staff and really tasty dishes. Authentic Asian beer. Price/performance absolutely ok. Clear recommendation if you want to have a casual meal on the Rü. If the weather is good, there are also opportunities to sit outside.

Authentic Korean cuisine in Essen. The menu is clear. There are also enough vegetarian options. The prices are within reason. My food was on the table very quickly and tasted delicious. The portion was big enough. The team is extremely friendly and accommodating. I was able to pay conveniently by credit card.

We ordered Bibimbap for take away with chicken. Wrong order was given with tofu. The egg & the gochujang were missing from the bibimbap. We never ordered the vegetarian version. The rice was also very dry. Disappointing and not worth the money.

This is a very delicious Korean home-cooked restaurant. For our family, eating here was an even more special experience and memory because we were able to encounter not only delicious Korean food, but also a warm ‘Korean spirit’ that we did not expect. It was my young daughter's first time traveling to Germany. She had a hard time with the taste and aroma of unfamiliar foreign food, but after eating Korean stone pot bibimbap and kimchi at Jays Essen, she gained energy and was able to successfully complete her 15-day trip to Germany and return to Korea. I was sorry for not being able to say thank you to the boss because I had to leave Essen the next day in a hurry and go to Frankfurt Airport and return to Korea right away. Delicious kimchi, ttukbaegi bulgogi, bibimbap, japchae, kimchi stew... Korean-style spicy soybean paste stew!!!! It's such a shame that I discovered this restaurant at the end of my trip. Otherwise, I would have visited every day during my stay in Essen!!!! If you want to eat delicious and hearty Korean food and experience special Korean hospitality, this is a must-visit restaurant. The owner's delicious food and warm smile made my daughter's first trip to Germany a very happy memory. If I go to Germany again in the future, I would like to visit again and say thank you. We will always hope from afar that this restaurant will be loved for a long time. My daughter made hearts with her hands full and sent them to her🫶🏻💓🫶🏻💓

Such a gem in Essen! One of the best Bulgogi I have ever eaten. I recommend you to have Dolsot Bibimbap. The portion is quite large and the food is hot until the end! It served with two side dishes. The staff was welcoming and the service was excellent. Highly recommended!

My friend and I ordered the beef stew and were so disappointed that it wasn't supposed to be called beef stew but leek soup pot because there was almost no beef in it, just lots of leeks, a small amount of mushrooms and glass noodles. I ate a lot of leeks, but there were still a lot of leeks left.

Very tasty Korean food. I've been to Korea several times and the Korean restaurants in Germany don't come close to the real taste of the restaurants in Korea. But this restaurant exceeded all my expectations in terms of taste. Very very tasty! Unfortunately very busy and busy, but the waiters are very friendly and gave us tea on the house after they were a little late.

Of all the kimchi stews I've had in Germany, I think it tastes the best in Korean style. And the japchae and stir-fried kimchi pork belly are also great!! All the food is really, really delicious~^^ I don't know if you make your own kimchi, but it's crunchy and delicious.

Recently we have been to this little gem in Essen's most vivid neighborhood, Rüttenscheid. What can I say? We were really delighted by the friendly atmosphere, kindness and most importantly, by the awesome food. They have about 20 seats inside sitting on high bar chairs and 2x table outside on the street. Our starters, the Mandus, similar to Japanese Goyza, were freshly made with a crusty skin. My Main beef dish listed as first main course on the Menue called Tukbul was exactly on point as to spiciness, was exceptional and different as it is served hot and blubbering as a slimy soup and you have to wait for a minimum of 5 minutes to even start to eat as hot as it is. Although i am a very good eater it was too much for me and worth every cent of the 17 Euro. In perfect combination with Korean beer which appears to me more sparkling. We will come again.

I was here for the first time yesterday and will definitely be back. Perfectly prepared, extremely tasty and very nice staff. The portions are optimally balanced. The place is a bit small and cramped, but everything else outweighs that. 5 Stars.

Yukgaejang Taste of hometown^^^^* The best I was worried because they said the chicken braised soup was spicy, but it was deliciously spicy and I liked it. I really missed being this spicy. It's 5 minutes away from the house I moved to, so I think I'll come here quite often. And everyone who works there is really friendly and I like everything about it. We went here for dinner during the week and the staff were very friendly and helpful as we had never eaten Korean before. We ordered the Dakangjeong and the Dolsotbimbap. Both portions were really large and good value, and the flavors were amazing. We also tried the Korean beer which was delicious. I highly recommend it!

I have never had such fantastic food outside of Asia. Thank you so much for this incredibly delicious experience. We raved about it for days afterwards and were completely thrilled. The service was also top. Unreserved recommendation. Unfortunately, I don't go to Essen too often. Otherwise, definitely a must visit on your next stay.

Das Essen ist super lecker, absolut bezahlbar und man bekommt diverse kostenlose Side dishes dazu. Das Ambiente ist ebenfalls außergewöhnlich. Es ist zwar klein aber fein. ❤️

Super leckeres Essen und relativ große Portionen. Wahlweise natürlich auch sehr scharfes Essen möglich. Preise sind völlig ok und nicht überzogen. Nette und hilfsbereite Bedienung. Ich war begeistert und werde definitiv noch einmal dort essen gehen.

Es ist ganz lecker und auch was besonderes. Leider schwankt die Qualität etwas. Das Hühnchen würde mir nicht paniert besser gefallen. Auch könnten die Portionen größer sein.

Ich kann das Restaurant absolut weiterempfehlen. Wer es etwas schärfer mag, dem kann ich nur Dak Bokkeum wärmstens empfehlen. Am Freitagabend sollte man aber unbedingt vorher reservieren, da das Restaurant relativ klein ist. Wir kommen wieder - definitiv. 👍

Das Essen war sehr lecker und auch der Yuzu Tee hat mich überzeugt. Bei meinem Hauptgericht war die Steinschüssel leider zu heiß, sodass etwas Reis angebrannt ist und ich bin kein Fan von hohen Stühlen. Dolsotbibimbap 5

Das Essen war einfach top! Sehr empfehlenswert. Der Inhaber ist super lieb und hat ganz viel und nett mit uns über Korea und K-Pop gequatscht. Richtig entspannte Atmosphäre:)

Sehr schnelle Bedienung, freundlich, sauber und lecker! Vegane Gerichte gibt es auch und man darf mit dem Hund rein.

Hat uns sehr gut geschmeckt, Vorspeise als auch Hauptgang. Klein und gemütlich, absolut sauber. Für jeden Geschmack war etwas dabei, von mild über pikant bis scharf. Wir kommen gerne wieder :)

Kleines Restaurant mit freundlicher Bedienung und sehr leckeren koreanisches Speisen.

Zum ersten Mal beim Koreaner zum Essen. Von außen wirkt das Jays unscheinbar. Drinnen recht klein, fast etwas beengt. Die Bestuhlung besteht zum Teil aus Hochsitzen - nicht für jeden komfortabel. Der Empfang war sehr freundlich, so als wäre man Stammkunde. Die Bedienung ebenfalls sehr freundlich. Bestellaufnahme schnell, Getränke schnell, Speisenwartezeit angemessen. Trotz des kleinen "Ladens" genügend Speisen zur Auswahl, auch mit deutschen "Untertiteln". Das Essen schmeckte sehr gut und wirkte frisch zubereitet. Je nach Gericht ist die Speise nicht im Ganzen heiß, eher warm. Das liegt an der Zusammenstellung der verschiedenen Zutaten; kann man aber vorher erfragen. Es gibt auch richtig heiße Gerichte, die im Tontopf serviert werden. Bei etlichen Gerichten kann man zur vegetarischen (Gemüse)Grundausstattung div. Fleischsorten hinzuwählen. Preis-/Leistung gut. Portionsgröße (3 verschiedene Gerichte) zum satt werden - auch für einen erwachsenen Mann :-)

Klein aber fein! Netter Service, sehr leckeres Essen, gutes Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis. Nicht nur ich (der koreanisches Essen kannte), sondern unser ganzer Tisch (6 Personen) war begeistert. Unbedingt reservieren!

Das Essen ist ausgesprochen lecker und die Bedienung sehr nett. Leider sind die Portionen wirklich extrem klein! Da wird ein Kleinkind nicht satt. Auch gibt es keinen Mittagstisch mehr. Schade.

Very delicious authentic Korean restaurant, ate there 3 days in a row during my entire stay in Essen. My favorite is dolsot bibimbap with pork and kimchi, be warned a bit spicy! Everything was great, I also recommend taking soju always! Friendly staff! Make sure to book a few days in advance, very popular place!

Wir waren zum Mittagessen da und hatten Rindfleisch im heissem Topf. Gart am Tisch. Echt ein Genuss und gleichzeitig ein Erlebnis. Super aufmerksames Personal. Immer wieder gerne. Ausstattung einfach und an die Grösse des Ladenlokals angepasst. Nur Hocker.

Good traditional food and friendly staff

Wir (zwei Deutsche und ein Koreaner) waren am 4. September dort. Ich kann nur sagen: Alles bestens

Explizit nach einem Pils gefragt, doch ein Radler bekommen. Der Laden, die Leute und das Essen waren aber top und würde ich immer empfehlen.

Bisher habe ich leider nicht viele Vergleiche für traditionelles koreanisches Essen, aber es hat mir auf jeden Fall wirklich gut geschmeckt! Besonders die Mandu (Teigtaschen) und das Yeontankimpab (Reisrolle) haben es mir angetan! Bei dem Bulgogi (Rindfleisch mit Sojasoßen Marinade) sowie dem Dolsotbibimbap (Reis, Gemüse, Fleisch un heißen Topf) hat man auf jeden Fall die gute Qualität der Zutaten bemerkt, insbesondere beim Fleisch, weshalb ich die Preise als durchaus angemessen erachte. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Wir werden auf jeden Fall öfter vorbeikommen! ~ Nachtrag ~ Mittlerweile sind wir ein paar Mal vor Ort essen gewesen und konnten uns ein Bild der verschiedenen Gerichte machen. Beim letzten Besuch hatten wir als Vorspeise die Suppe (Mandukuk), die geschmacklich sehr interessant aber auch sehr lecker war. Eine leichte Brühe, die einen Hauch von Schärfe hat, mit etwas Gemüse und Mandu versehen. Dazu hatte mein Mann den Rindfleischeintopf (Yukke-Yang), bei dem man eine wirklich reichliche Portion erhält. Der Topf ist bis oben gefüllt mit Gemüse, Fleisch und Glasnudeln, zudem sehr schwarf. Er meinte zwar das er bereits schärfer gegessen hat, war aber dennoch zufrieden mit dem Gericht und würde es definitiv wieder bestellen. Mir persönlich war es zu scharf 😅 Deswegen hatte ich das Hähnchen in Sojasoßen Marinade (Dakgangjeong). Ein leichtes Gericht und einfach super lecker!

An sich war alles ganz gut. Essen war lecker. Service auch ganz nett. Ambiente ganz okay. Hat alles mehr oder weniger gepasst! Guten Hunger & guten Hunger!

I was totally in the mood for some Korean food. Jay's Essen came in perfect. It it on the main street where most restaurants will be when visiting #essen #germany They accept card and cash. Can definitely get a bit busy so I would recommend reserving a table but it's not needed. I went with a #somak for a drink and paired it with some #kimchi and #bulgogi I thought the portions were perfect. The flavor was just right as well. Making the Bulgogi nice and tender. I was happy to know the staff were so attentive and cared so much for their food. If I had the chance I would definitely give this place another try. Finally, the rating. I will give this restaurant a 7.2 out of 10 on that 🔥 scale.
