Il Cancello in Köln

Although the Italian restaurant opposite was closed, there were only a few guests in the restaurant. The service took its time. Bread was only brought upon request during the meal. The portions (fish pan and grilled calamari were large, but unfortunately not very tasty. Quality instead of quantity would have been better.

Good price/performance ratio. The food came quickly and was really delicious. Drink prices are also humane. The service was nice and courteous. Only the music was a bit too loud and not to my taste.

Absolutely recommended - there were twelve of us there, everyone was thrilled with the food and the friendliness of the staff :) ...and be careful, the pizzas are huge!

Me and my friends with whom I dined at Il Cancello were all pleasantly surprised. My Quattro Formmaggi pizza was the best pizza of my life, not to mention the enormous size of the pizza! The next time I'll be in Cologne I'll eat at Il Cancello again.

Today was my first time here and for someone who pays attention to food and expresses special requests, you should at least respond to them. If you want to do this with additional calculation, you can always do that. What doesn't work at all is when someone doesn't want something in their food and is then served a dish that contains a lot of exactly what they didn't want. In my case it was oil, which shouldn't be there at all. In the photo you can see how the plate is fully smeared with oil. The dish was good for someone who doesn't have any special requests. Ordered pizza and salad from here for €60. There was a maggot caterpillar in my food. When we alerted the staff, there was no apology, no compensation. We were advised to file a complaint with Uber Eats. We actually decided to approach the staff so that there would be no security for the restaurant. No effort would be made to make amends. We didn't even get our money back. We won't eat here again.

Waited over 1 hour for a pizza and therefore canceled the pizza. The waiter said every few minutes "two more minutes and the pizza will come" "two more minutes". If you don't believe me, please go there on Saturday and test it yourself.

Very decorated and with a large terrace. The staff very attentive and fast. We had to wait a long time for our dishes to be brought because they only had one cook for the entire restaurant but nothing that a good bottle of wine couldn't solve.

We were warmly greeted and although we had no reservation, we were given a table quickly. Menu all in German so thank goodness for google translate but our waitress was also brilliant and spoke good English (thank you!!). Nice basket of bread while we waited for our starter. Bruschetta was deliciously fresh! My children shared a pizza as we’d observed they were all very big. Good decision as they JUST ABOUT ate it all. My husband loved his Salmon, Calamari and prawns for his main and I loved my chicken schnitzel! I’d have licked the plate if I was at home. The street begger was quickly dealt with and the surroundings remained fun. Beautiful spot. We all really enjoyed our extended visit here and would happily go back.

Delicious food, fast & friendly service. The pizzas are enormous but have a wafer-thin base, crispy edges and a fruity tomato sauce. The noodle portions are also sizeable and very tasty. My husband likes the sirloin steak with rosemary potatoes, chili, tomatoes and garlic vegetables and lemon oil. I would say the prices are fair.

Leider hat der Koch mit dem Öl übertrieben, die Restnudeln schwammen im Öl. Der Service reagierte nett auf meinen Hinweis, sie hätten zwei Köche und einer würde immer gerne viel Öl benutzen. Lieber Koch, bitte in Zukunft weniger Öl ans Essen.

Great restaurant in a direct location to Eigelsteintorburg. The service is very friendly and attentive. I had the Spaghetti Carbonara, absolutely recommended as it is made without cream. Wollte heute mit einer Freundin im Il Cancello essen gehen. Obwohl der Laden nicht sehr voll war, mussten wir durch Winken die wirklich freundliche Bedienung auf uns aufmerksam machen. Die Getränke kamen rasch, doch musste ich mein Bier aus der Flasche trinken, da im Glas noch der getrocknete Bierschaum vom Vorgänger klebte. Auch war das Besteck voller Spülschlieren. Über all das hätte ich hinwegsehen können. Aber dass auf meinem Ziegenkäse im Salat eine Made ihre Bahnen zog, hat uns endgültig den Appetit verdorben. Das war einfach ekelhaft und ich möchte mir nicht vorstellen, wie die Küche aussieht. NIE WIEDER!

The pizza was huge (enough to feed two adults), tasted good, but nothing special. Prices very reasonable. The service on the other hand was the absolute worst we have ever experienced. The staff were rude, we waited 40 minutes for the pizza, while all the German people got their food (mostly pizza as well), within 15 minutes. Maybe this was just a mistake, but the waiter did not seem to be sorry about it at all. If you don’t speak German, stay away was the message we got.

The pizza wasn't delivered for the second time. The order has been lost. Would not recommend the restaurant.

By chance we sat down in the Cancello, with an Italian family next to us. I thought nothing could go wrong. And that's exactly it, the truffle pasta and pizza blew us away. Extremely delicious. Two of us had dinner here on a Wednesday night and the place was busy. Got a table straight away, service was excellent and the food exceptional. We had two fish dishes that were incredible. With a glass of red wine, bottle of sparkling water, tiramisu and two coffees the bill came to €63.70!!!! Bargain. Will definitely be back and couldn't recommend enough.

Dropped by to have just a beer and a glass of wine. Ended up having a huge and really good pizza. Food was good, staff was super friendly, and sitting outdoors was cosy. Indoors the place is clean and tidy, the same with the toilets. Could not wish anything more. This place is highly recommendable!

The pizzas are huge, estimated at 45-50cm in diameter. Very, very, very big! And in retrospect I was glad that the waiter advised us not to order an additional appetizer. So we only ordered bruschetta once for the three of us. We were given a menage of spices and olive oil at the table. There were also green olives and bread as a greeting from the kitchen. My son and I each ordered a "cartwheel" pizza and my daughter ordered pasta with asparagus from the daily menu. The pizzas were really huge. In total, my son and I left about 3 quarters of a pizza on our plate. Less might be more here. Next time we'll know and order a pizza together and then have an appetizer for each. The toppings on the pizza were plentiful and ok, but overall the cartwheel is difficult to handle because the pizza is bigger than the plate. There was also too much olive oil on the pizza for my taste. The pizzas should be reduced in size and these giants should only be served upon special request.

Had a business meal, even though the restaurant was busy tried to give us a nice place to sit. We each ordered two starters, a prawn pan and an antipasti platter. Both very good, the pan was unique with a hot pan and lots of oil for dipping In the end we were almost full so we ordered a large Parma pizza which we shared between the two of us. The bill was too cheap for this quality and this location

I visit this restaurant so often…Absolutely my no. 1 Italian restaurant in Cologne!!! Real Italian cuisine (the pasta is so incredibly fresh and delicious...), very good quality with a good price, very nice service, quick food preparation. I recommend here to any friends who are visiting Cologne!

We ate at Il Cancello last night on the recommendation of our Cologne friends. We were amazed by the food, the service and the ambience. The staff was super friendly and relaxed. The food topped it off and rounded off the evening perfectly. Clear recommendation from us. We will be back!

Pleasant setting, spaced tables, professional and fast service... but I didn't like the pizza I ate: it is certainly very very large (50 cm) but not much flavor, unmelted cheese (quality of the ingredients?) and cardboard texture.. the 3 stars are won by the pasta dish (zucchini/scampi) of my dining companion.
